How Burn Fitness Jonathan Cruz went from doctor to gym owner – Boston Herald

Sometimes, dedicating your life to wellness is exactly what the doctor prescribed. In the case of Burn Fitness Jonathan Cruz, he opted to go full-time with exercise and founded his Boston-based boutique studio after leaving the medical field.

I started teaching classes and I started to personal-train clients while I was still in medical school, Cruz told the Track of his graduate studies at Dartmouth College.

It all kind of started because I was a triathlete and needed to find ways to cross-train, he continued. I decided to try some group exercise classes and when I tried those, I decided I wanted to go and teach them.

After finishing medical school and stretching all the way through his residency, Cruz kept leading sweat sessions at least a couple of times each week. His career as a neuropathologist, which included a gig within the highly lucrative pharmaceutical industry, didnt even detract from his time in the gym.

I decided to retire early from my career and that was in 2001, but continued to teach more classes, Cruz said. But I didnt retire necessarily because I wanted to go and do this.

Cruz stressed that an early departure from the workforce was always in the cards for him. But he didnt know that his planned professional pause would only be temporary, or that it would eventually end in him becoming a gym owner. He spent a few years of his newfound free time traveling as intended until he decided he needed more.

It wasnt until years later that I decided to go back and do something completely different, Cruz said. After about four years, I came out of retirement and opened up Burn in the South End. It was about helping out people in a different way than how I was helping people before.

I wanted more stimulation so I decided to do this, to start my own business, he added. I didnt have a business background. I didnt go to business school. It was all self-taught, self-learned. It was tough. Every single day I had to wear a different hat. One day, I was the business guy. One day, I was the janitor. Another day, I was the architect.

And of course, every day Cruz is still a doctor. Its been almost six years since hes opened Burn Fitness first South End location and three years since he added its Back Bay outpost, but he still taps into his old M.D. skills.

I understand the body a lot better than other people in the fitness industry, Cruz said. It gives me a different perspective. When Im training my personal training clients, Im able to explain some of the real physiological changes that theyre going through and what were trying to do.

It helps focus on prevention of injuries and recovery from injuries because I understand the body and its different systems, he added. I do what I do because I love it. I did have a really good career before. I went through a lot of education and training, but what Im doing now is something I really enjoy.
