No shared equipment and long waiting lists: the future of fitness classes – Telegraph.co.uk

All gyms and fitness classes have been closed for the past 11 weeks in the UK to slow the spread of Covid-19. The earliest theyre allowed to re-open is July 4, though a confirmed date is unclear as no official government advice has yet been issued.

We do know that when they do open however, gyms and studios will need to abide by the strict social distancing and hygiene guidelines, much like retail stores and hair salons. Previously, you might recall attending a class with 25 people in a small room, being in rather close contact with them (often having to work with them) and sharingequipment. In a post-Covid-19 world however, this will all need to be vastly different to keep staff and gym goers safe, which means everything from yoga to boxing will be affected.

The new generation of spinning has been spearheaded by the likes of Psycle and 1Rebel and sees riders sit in one room for up to an hour riding a bike to dance tracks and with disco lighting, often with a sweat towel at your seat provided by the company. At 1Rebel, classes hold as many as 85 bikes, and are often all filled at its peak time sessions due to popularity. Psycle operated a waiting list which saw people on it get notified 10 minutes before a class if a space had become available.

Previously youd have to squeeze between bikes at these studios to navigate the room, such was their proximity to each other, whereas now, bikes will need to have a minimum of 2 metres between them, meaning less bikes and therefore less availability overall.

Our classes ranged from 20-60 people before, but were looking at only 50% occupancy once we re-open, said Rhian Stephenson, founder of Psycle London. This means that waiting lists are likely to be longer than they previously were. Weve always had lengthy gaps between our classesto allow for a deep clean, and our ventilation is brilliant - we have completely fresh air circulating every 5-7 minutes, said Jason De Savary, founder of Core Collective.

High Intensity Interval Training has long been popular thanks to its fat-burning effectiveness, and innovative offerings such as F45 and Rowbots classes have thrived. While sweating in a small room with up to 20 other exercisers has been the norm, going forward, these cardio classes will have to adapt to suit the new normal.

Rowbots signature class sees the class split in half, with clients alternating between a rowing machine and weighted exercises, all of which are shared with the other half of the class throughout. While it hasn't confirmed what changes it'll make on re-opening, it's likely it'll operate smaller classes to avoid equipment being shared in the same class.

Similarly, boxing classes where gloves were issued to attendees will need to be rethought. As a way of combating the issue of sharing equipment and minimising risks, many will likely decide to sell their equipment. 'We're going to sell 'fit kits' so that people have the choice to bring their own small equipment to the class,' confirmed a spokesperson for Frame.

Much like boxing and rowing, yoga requires equipment, and the sharing of mats will need to be rethought before any yoga classes re-open. Deep cleans of the room will need to be done prior to any new class and attendees arriving, so a less busy daily schedule will be needed to allow for this. As well as this, yoga and stretching requires lots of room, so any mats will need to be spread out to ensure social distancing can be maintaining, meaning less space available. As such, the availability of yoga classes will have less availability than before.

Our class capacity ranges from 8 to 37 depending on the studio, and were making plans to run at 50% capacity so that everyone can have their own marked out space, advised Frame. 'We are hoping to launch an open-air studio soon, too.'
