This is an artists rendering of the fitness court McCandless is planning to build next spring in the Town Hall Recreation Complex. UPMC Passavant is contributing half $120,000 cost to construct the facility, which will contain seven stations, 30 pieces of body-weight training equipment and have the capacity to accommodate up to 28 people at a time.

McCandless efforts to build an outdoor fitness court is receiving a major boost from UPMC Passavant hospital, which has signed on as a sponsor and will cover half the cost of its construction.

The court, which is slated for construction in the spring, was designed by the National Fitness Campaign, which also provided the town with a $30,000 matching grant for its construction.

To qualify for the matching grant, the town had to provide a site for the fitness court. Plans are to place it in the Town Hall Recreation Complex adjacent to the Lorraine G. Rogers soccer fields and Ingomar Road.

Another grant requirement is the appointment of a fitness ambassador, which council fulfilled by naming local fitness instructor Deawna Alfonsi to the post.

UPMC has agreed to donate $60,000, which covers the remaining 50% of the projects cost.

Exercise is a vital component to health and wellness, Susan Hoolahan, president of UPMC Passavant, told council at its Dec. 16 meeting. This is really a wonderful opportunity to partner with the town to help our community become healthier.

The 32-foot-by-35-foot court will contain seven stations, 30 pieces of body-weight training equipment and will have the capacity to accommodate up to 28 people at a time.

Once construction begins it is expected to take about a month to complete.

We are excited to be working with UPMC Passavant on this project, said council President Kim Zachary. We thank UPMC for its generosity and commitment to the fitness court, which will greatly benefit the local community and contribute to making fitness attainable to all.
