Valencell Mobile Fitness Sensor Technology Reaches Milestones in Clinical Validation Studies

RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Valencell, an innovator in mobile fitness technology that integrates into audio headsets and earbuds, today announced that its licensable fitness sensor technology has reached a key milestone, achieving unprecedented validation by an independent study recently presented at this years American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) annual conference and validation testing supported by a National Institute of Health (NIH) Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.

Building on this strong industry validation, the company is rebranding its sensor technology as PerformTekTM (previously it was referred to as V-LINC) to better reflect the combination of Valencells cutting edge sensors and biometric firmware technology and its role in optimizing athletic performance training and coaching.

At the annual ACSM conference, Meir Magal, Ph.D., FACSM, an Associate Professor of Exercise Science at North Carolina Wesleyan College (NCWC), presented the findings of his independent study, which further validated the accuracy of Valencell's technology. The study, confirmed that Valencell earbud sensors were a valid and reliable instrument for continuous measurement of heart rate during exercise. The sensors were strongly correlated to the heart rate measure obtained from a twelve lead electrocardiogram and resulted in similar reliability on a day-to-day basis. The study data was collected at the Human Performance Laboratory on the campus of NCWC.

Additionally, with ongoing research supported by an NIH Phase II SBIR program, Valencell has demonstrated that its technology can accurately assess an individuals resting metabolic rate (RMR), which can account for approximately 60 percent of ones daily energy expenditure. The clinical trials will be completed at the beginning of next year with the support of the Duke Center for Living. This technology, which also tracks calories burned during exercise, provides individuals with precise insight into the number of calories burned a day (when active and resting).

Both studies reflect milestones for Valencell, and the mobile fitness industry as a whole. The Magal study represents the first time a noninvasive earbud-based heart rate sensor has been clinically shown to continuously and accurately track heart rate during exercise, stated CEO and co-founder Dr. Steven LeBoeuf. Furthermore, preliminary findings from our NIH-supported study have shown that our technology has the potential to overcome one of the industrys most difficult challenges determining a persons resting metabolic rate without the need for expensive equipment and multiple hours of a persons time.

Valencell provides a licensing package that includes a PerformTekTM sensor design (for both Apple iOS and Android platforms) along with a digital signal processor(DSP)chip loaded with its biometric firmware. Licensees have access to an online community through Valencells application programming interface (API) along with iOS and Android software development kits (SDK).
