West Hills fitness center open to students, public

LEMOORE The West Hills College Lemoore Fitness Center may be the schools best-kept secret, but its not like administrators havent tried to promote it.

The center, located at the west end of the Golden Eagle Arena, first opened to students and members of the public in October 2011. Since then, it has mainly been used by student athletes and a handful of other members.

Dean of Educational Services James Preston said the school has tried to promote the center on campus, on its website and even by emailing students a link to a promotional YouTube video. Despite efforts touting the state-of-the-art facility and its low membership fees, most people dont even know it exists.

As the spring semester wound down this past May, Preston said he encountered one student who was turning in a paper to coach Allen Fortune, whose office is located in the Fitness Center.

I was in here doing something and this kid shows up with his final exam and hes like, Is coach Fortune around? Preston said. And I said, Yeah, hes right there. And then [the kid] turns around and hes like, Whoa. This is awesome, man. Can students use this?

Because the Golden Eagle Arena was built using bond funds approved by a vote of the community, Preston said the college intentionally tried to keep membership fees low as a way to say thank you. Students pay just $40 for the school year (August through May) and members of the community pay $60. Fees may also be paid each semester or on a monthly basis.

Our whole goal is to break even, Preston said. Weve kind of done the math and theres a certain amount of memberships, if we can hit that for the year, then we recoup our costs. Thats the whole purpose of it. Were not looking to make any money. Its really more just providing the service.

Members can begin using the facility as soon as they pay their fees. One of the facilitys attendants will give a brief orientation to make sure people know how to use the equipment properly and safely.

Ill ask them what their goals are, what they want to do, what they want to get out of the fitness lab, said Dalton Robison, a Fitness Center attendant. Most people just want to get on the treadmill or the bike and I just show them how to start it up and [work] the different programs that it has. Then I walk them through the free weights section, cable weights, and I pretty much tailor the orientation to what theyre looking to get out of the Fitness Center.

After that, members are free to work out with the treadmills, elliptical machines, free weights, cable weights and a whole host of machines to work out every muscle group. Members also have access to the indoor walking and running track on the upper level of the arena.
