The Long Island CMWL centers, located in Smithtown, Westbury, and Amityville and run by Dr. Kaplan, have provided weight loss treatment and counseling to more than 8,000 patients over the last 10 years. Starting in January 2012, obesity treatments and counseling for people with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or above, when seen by a primary care physician with specialized training in obesity, are covered by Medicare as well as other health insurance providers including Aetna, Oxford, United, Empire BlueCross BlueShield, and 1199 (hospital workers union). Other private health insurers may offer similar coverage as well. .

The Center for Medical Weight Loss (CMWL) clinically proven, evidence-based programs provide an approach to long-term weight loss and maintenance under the care and support of trained physicians. Each fully individualized program is customized to the patient, taking into account his or her medical history, body composition, and personal goals.
