Re: your June 17 article, Weighing the risks:

It should be pointed out that the article focused almost entirely on a procedure that has been shown to provide the least weight loss in the short term, less than optimal control of diabetes and has very little data in terms of long-term weight loss maintenance. All this while completely ignoring far more effective procedures.

In my opinion this is not in the public interest to highlight the least effective procedure without giving the actual statistics in comparison to more effective procedures.

The article completely ignored a procedure that has been proven repeatedly to be the very most effective at controlling Type 2 diabetes, as well as shown to be the most effective in both total weight loss and long-term maintenance of weight loss.

All these facts documented in 15 years of statistics. This procedure also allows the most normal of all the post operative bariatric diets, which will allow patients a far better chance at being successful in their efforts at improved health.

The procedure to which I refer is known as duodenal switch or by some as gastric reduction/duodenal switch. Another procedure completely ignored in the article - only included in the graphic without discussion - is the sleeve gastrectomy.

The idea that the short-term cost is outweighed by great long-term benefit is supported by a quote from David Grau of the Ventura County Taxpayers Association in the accompanying article "Who's eating surgery costs.

I find it very interesting and encouraging that he recognizes the long-term value. It is also gratifying that it is recognized as a medically necessary procedure rather than cosmetic. This is a lesson that health insurance carriers might learn from.
