BROWN: Safe but sorry: Seniors lose out on the little things – West Central Tribune

Painfully mediocre.

Football was far and away my focus while attending Fridley High School in the mid 2000s.

In the winter, I was in the weight room. I was bad at putting a ball through a hoop. I also couldnt skate unless I used a hockey stick to make myself a plodding tripod that couldnt even attempt a slapshot without tripping over myself. I loved Taco Thursdays at the cafeteria too much to wanna cut weight for wrestling.

So come springtime for my junior and senior years, I was throwing shot put for the track and field team.

It was rather uneventful as far as results go. I was number three on the varsity because, honestly, people ahead of me quit before practices went outside courtesy of their senior slides. Im sure somewhere my parents still have my second-place ribbon from the Metro Alliance Conference JV championship.

Giving it some thought, I dont think I broke 40 feet in a meet. But 15 years later, I couldnt care less about how far I could throw that 12-pound ball.

To this day, I remember the things away from the throwers circle.

The dumb conversations and inside jokes with teammates. The multiple times I vowed to bring a propane camping grill to meets so us throwers could mow down hot dogs and hamburgers while the runners made us dizzy going around the track.

I vividly remember the head coach getting mad because I brought a portable DVD player to a meet because, well, shot putters do something for 15 minutes of a four-hour meet and Goodfellas seemed like a good way to kill time at a St. Johns indoor meet. He said his piece to the team but it clearly was meant for me.

So when the inevitable finally happened on Thursday the Minnesota State High School League canceling the 2020 spring sports season my heart sank.

Not because of the results that would normally be filling the pages of the West Central Tribune. But, because every student-athlete across the state wont get to share in those moments.

As clich as it sounds, you really do take those small, personal moments for granted when youre in high school. But now kids arent really getting those small, personal moments thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even when social distancing ends, our present-day memories will always have the reminder of social distancing hanging over like a dark cloud.

For any high schoolers giving this a read: This whole thing sucks.

Just like you, Id love nothing more than to be out of the fields, track and courses to take part in the athletic exploits.

For the non-athletes, not getting to share these last months with your best friends and classmates is a punch to the gut.

Dont lose sight on why the decision was made to cancel spring sports and keeping school at home for the rest of the year. This is for the greater good, in the name of public health and safety.

And, dont forget that there will be plenty of opportunities to make lasting friendships and memories.

I remember graduating in 2005 and being repeatedly told youll never see your high school buddies again. Thats not quite the world we live in now. With social media, youll stay in touch with the people you want to stay in touch with. And I hope you get the time this summer to make up for lost time.

But, its OK to lament over the circumstances for a minute. Heck, take a few minutes.

Whether youre an all-state standout on a championship team, or youre downright mediocre like I was as a thrower, losing that camaraderie with your teammates stinks.

Keep your heads up. Stay safe, everyone.
