Getting older? Add more weight to exercise routine

Docs say weight-bearing exercises help keep pounds off

As people age, it gets harder to lose weight, but doctors say there are things different things people can do as they get older to combat those extra pounds.

Mercy Medical Center's Dr. Meghan Lynch said exercise is the key to losing weight as people get older. Starting at age 30, people lose muscle mass, and the metabolism is set by that, so if you increase muscle, you increase your metabolism.

She said to keep body weight down, people have to do more weight-bearing exercise, especially after age 40.

"I hear from my patients again and again that there's a big shift at 40 and there's a big shift at 50. Patients tell me, 'I'm doing the same things I used to do. I'm eating right, I'm exercising, and I used to be able to drop a few pounds. Now, I'm doing the same things and I'm actually gaining weight,'" Lynch said.

She said what people don't want to do is starve themselves.

"A starvation diet just sends your body into a mode where you retain pounds. It slows your metabolism way down," she said.

Lynch suggested swimming as a good weight-bearing exercise that's easy on your joints. Weight lifting is good, too.
