The truth about weight training – Grainews

At your age, should you really be lifting weights?Isnt weight training dangerous for your joints? Does that really help you feel better?Arent you worried about getting injured again?I heard that weight training is bad for you doesnt it cause arthritis?

These are some things my clients have heard when their peers/families/friends find out they are participating in an exercise-based program with me.

Answers to some of those myths and others are:

1. Weight training does not cause arthritis.2. Weight training will not make women bulky.3. Weight training is highly effective for arthritis rehabilitation and management, when it is done correctly. Poorly designed exercise programs and poor form will exacerbate the symptoms of arthritis, instead of helping. The guidance of an educated exercise-based professional eliminates this risk.4. Weights are just as beneficial if not more beneficial when the goal is weight loss and metabolic improvements in populations at risk for obesity and diabetes.

Would I tell someone of any age to just go and start lifting weights (no matter how much)? Absolutely not. Do I prescribe and coach programs for all ages (yes, all the way up to 90-somethings) that involve various amounts of loaded movements, functional movements, dynamic movements, and stability training? You bet I do!

The body works on an adaptation-based system. This means in order to improve our systems we have to stress our systems.

Heres the feedback I get from my dedicated clients:

I dont wake up at 3 a.m. anymore with back pain.

I sleep through the night and dont wake up stiff in the mornings anymore.

I dont get tired during the day.

My joints arent bugging me as much since I started training.

Im making healthier choices elsewhere in my life since starting this training routine.

I FEEL GOOD.

When we apply healthy stress to our system, things change for the better. We also develop a higher tolerance for negative stressors, which means we function at a higher efficiency longer term. Its widely acknowledged now that the mind and the body are one co-ordinating unit. Exercise movement of any kind is the most effective medicine, and statistics support this.

According to the Conference Board of Canada, if we were to decrease the number of inactive Canadians by even 10 per cent, wed see a 30 per cent reduction in all-cause mortality and major savings in health care. It is estimated that more than $2.4 billion, or 3.7 per cent of all health-care costs, were attributed to the direct cost of treating illness and disease due to physical inactivity. The financial impact of poor health amounts to a loss of more than $4.3 billion to the Canadian economy, and the negative repercussions of inactivity cost the health-care system $89 billion per year in Canada.

According to several studies, properly structured and supported exercise programs, designed and delivered by a professional can, among other benefits:

Weight training when done intelligently for each individual is just as effective as other types of exercise in improving health. It has its own set of extra benefits and of course risk factors. Just like that Tylenol you like to pop for your back pain.

There is no one way to utilize the benefits of movement. Some people like to do yoga, some like to do step classes, and others just like to go for regular walks and stretch.

Adding appropriate weight training into your routine comes with vast benefits to your health. The key factors are ensuring that you have a program and guidance that is suited to you, as an individual, and you are applying it as a positive stressor to a body. Exercise, like many other things, is a prescription. It must come with appropriate and guided use!

All the ways assisted living and senior housing could serve residents better – MarketWatch

Ron, my significant other of 25 years, is a retired psychologist withParkinsons disease. He lives in a small apartment in theassisted livingsection of the best continuing care community in the city, having moved there from independent living in October. He had begun to require more physical services but remained engaged in life and mentally alert.

When thecoronavirusbegan to invade south Louisiana, however, Rons assisted-living facility responded with a reaction that I would call extreme and absolute, no doubt derived from a fear of contagion and a concern for their own liability. They effectively closed down the campus. But they hadnt prepared for what that would mean to Ron and others like him.

All visitors except caregivers were barred; neither Rons daughter and grandchildren nor I could visit. We couldnt take him off campus, even just for lunch, or hed then be confined to his unit for two weeks. All residents were required to remain on the premises except for medical appointments, when the facilitys van driver would take them.

Three meals daily were delivered to Rons unit, so hes been eating alone all the time since the third week of March.Thereve been no more opportunities for camaraderie over fried chicken in the dining room or sitting down with two sweet-looking, powder-haired ladies and finding that they, too, would love to get into a regular poker game.

All scheduled activities were canceled. No more visiting performers from the LSU School of Music came to entertain; no more speakers held forth in the community room on subjects ranging from the challenges of the Middle East to climate change.Book-club gatherings were forbidden. So were religious services.

In this new regimen, mental stimulation became strictly do-it-yourself, which is infinitely more difficult when Parkinsons already saps your energy. And nigh on to impossible whenyourlife has been primarily analog.

Also read: Millions more seniors are likely to fall into poverty

Rons parameters were defined by where he could perambulate along the driveways and sidewalks on his rollator. But, of course, he needed to wear a mask and maintain a social distance if he encountered another resident, which made chatting challenging, with the requisite six feet of separation and the hearing loss many residents suffer.Pleasant interludes in the garden were reduced to a mush of Huhs? and What did you says?

And, as Ive noticed during our daily FaceTime visits, after Rons seven weeks in lockdown, in physical isolation with a lack of social and intellectual stimulation, he has suffered a noticeable mental decline. Sometimes, he seems like the old Ron, but at other times, he is unable to process things and its not just from the Parkinsons.

A few days ago, for example, while were FaceTiming, I told Ron I had a 1 p.m.Zoom ZM, +1.92% date with my grandsons. He looked quizzical and asked how I could talk to them when they were in school.

Theyre not in school, I told him.Think about it, I said, adding, Why are they not in school? He couldnt remember. After I reminded him of the ubiquity of the coronavirus shutdowns, he hit his head with his hand and groaned, embarrassed.I cant believe I could have forgotten that, he whispered, suddenly terrified of his own deterioration.

I suspect that the weekslong lack of social and intellectual stimulation not only affected Ron, but also others who live by themselves in assisted living. The lack of external connections led me to the conclusion that Ron should have had access to something similar to what my elementary school-aged grandchildren receive:In the absence of their normal school days, they have differing levels of digital learning, so their isolation is broken, at least virtually.

Dont miss: How to be the best virtual grandparent you can be

Before the next, inevitable pandemic, I believe that older adults and their loved ones wholl be shopping for a long-term care facility should expand their checklist of amenities to include the ability to connect to the outside world through the wonders of the digital one.

As Next Avenues recentarticle about senior housingattested, this is already in place at some senior communities. But I fear that many, like Rons, dont offer these services.

This, they should realize, is at their own peril because only protecting residents from physical harm can risk exacerbating their mental decline.

Care communities need dedicated tech assistants on staff available to instruct residents, even for something as basic as how to use FaceTime.

Ron had never accessed FaceTime on his smartphone. After I insisted we try, it took several frustrating rounds of instruction because I wasnt there to help him.But now he delights in seeing my face, as well as the young and enthusiastic grins of his teenage grandchildren and his daughter.

See: The nursing home COVID-19 tragedy how did this happen?

I had scheduled a Zoom happy hour with friends in Idaho and wanted Ron to participate, since hes devoted to them. But he didnt have the Zoom app. Also, hed forgotten his password to the app store, didnt know how to retrieve it and no one at his facility helped him do it.

I sent him a link, but that only confused him. In the end, he participated by audio through my cellphone held up to my desktop and repeatedly told our friends how wonderful it was to hear their voices.

A ready tech assistant could have helped Ron connect to Zoom or Microsoft Teams MSFT, +1.13% or another meeting format, through which he and his fellow poker players could hold virtual cutthroat games. That would have led the book club to meet and discuss the merits of their latest read, too.

When I recently told Ron that I was Zooming in to a religious service, one hed enjoyed with me on many occasions, he said, wistfully: I would love to do that.

Although Ive dropped off magazines and homemade scones at the facilitys gate during the tightly regulated two drop-offs per week, that hasnt extended his world or challenged his brain during this period of isolation.

With assistance from a tech staffer, he could seek out books hed learned of on public radio; connect to history, arts and culture websites bringing performances, lectures, and more. If hed been helped to add the necessary hardware for streaming capability, he could have been enjoying a spectrum of films, documentaries or travel videos about places hell now never visit, due to Parkinsons.

In years past, this intrepid traveler went with me to Vietnam, Turkey, Chile, the Republic of Georgia and more. I know the ability to virtually venture to places hes dreamed about could remove him however briefly from his confinement.

Senior residences should also have an intra-facility/inhouse television channel, to broadcast to TV sets in every unit. After all, TVs are the one piece of furniture everyone owns. A dedicated channel could show the same old-timey movies that would have entertained residents in the community room; exercise programs; and videos of interesting speakers or musicians.

A weekly guide could arrive with breakfast on Monday mornings, detailing the schedule of the weeks programs, a substitute for the chirpy calendar of monthly activities that they had posted everywhere in the facility during normal times.

I suspect that care communities like Rons might argue against my proposal because adding dedicated tech staffers for residents would be too expensive. The service would be difficult to enact, theyd say. And, they might counter, if residents wanted to be digitally connected, their families should have assured that they were when they moved in.

Senior residences cheerfully advertise themselves as the perfect place for the over-65 demographic. But the perfect place must include care for thewholeperson both body and mind.

These capabilities are already offered by the senior communities Next Avenue wrote about. Im sorry Ron is not living at one of them.

Putting Your Fitness Business On The Digital Road Map – Forbes

Due to the global novel coronavirus pandemic, the face of business has changed. As an entrepreneur, this can be frightening. Fitness entrepreneurs face a unique challenge in that the cornerstone of their business model is usually face-to-face contact with their customers.

It is a necessity, however, that we all learn how to operate online as much as possible while were navigating this unprecedented event. For those in the fitness industry, there are three main pillars to migrating your business to a digital format successfully.

1. Everything is now digital.

The good news first: People still need coaching services. The bad news: Touch points you used to rely on aren't available right now. Before, when someone walked into your gym, you could have a quick conversation with them to gauge their needs and figure out how best to serve them. That cant be replicated right now.

The way you can develop that same sort of rapport is with a closed Facebook group. Coaches can go there to engage with customers and encourage the same type of conversational community that existed at your gym. It will help your clients stay plugged in to what youre doing and feel connected to their coaches.

Another key service normally provided inside a gym is movement technique and correction. Coaches watch clients and show them ways to become more efficient with their movements and prevent injury. That cant be done when youre delivering a workout routine through text or email.

The best way to digitize that service is through video. This can be done by posting your workouts to YouTube or other social media channels or even sending them directly over text message. Reach out to clients to get a feel for the channel(s) they use most, and meet them there.

Lastly, consider the practical stuff surrounding how you transact and take peoples money. Before, you could take cash, checks or cards. Now, virtually 100% of your transactions need to be digital.

Youve gone from being a brick-and-mortar to being an e-commerce business. Youre still selling and trying to win business, but you have to digitize things like your waivers, contracts, insurance documents, etc. From top to bottom, youre now a digital business.

2. Beef up your video skills.

Youre not going to get away with just selling written workout programs right now. Workouts are available for free all over the place, and no real value comes from simply writing them down. The value is in the experience you give the client.

Currently, thats going to have to be done over video. Peloton is a brand that does this well; it has a great visual experience. Thats obviously a level not everyone will be able to reach (nor do you need to), but it gives you an idea of where the bar is set.

You need to serve your community, which can now include nonlocals. If you execute this well, it could be a piece of your business in the long run. But youre going to have to get really good at doing video to deliver an experience people are willing to pay for.

The most important aspect of this is where you do your recording. Find a clean spot with proper lighting. It should be quiet, with minimal wind and background noise. An iPhone can work well for recording video.

Audio quality, however, can really make or break a workout experience. Bluetooth headphones allow the speaker to stand away from the phone and still be heard. You may also want to invest in a directional microphone with a wind muff. Make sure you test all your equipment first, as the kiss of death will be if people struggle to hear you. Youll be given some tolerance for technical issues at the start, but people wont continue to tune in if your quality doesnt pass muster.

Lastly, make sure whoever is recording your videos brings some personality to the table. They should be comfortable on camera and excited to be there. Good energy translates through video. This is a different skill set than what you might look for in an in-house coach, but we may be doing things digitally for a while. Consider what staff you want to have in place.

3. Focus on communication.

A lot of people are old school: They want to come into the gym to sit down and chat. But that isnt possible right now. We need to understand other ways our clients might want to communicate.Just because you prefer text, Facebook or email doesnt mean thats everyones preference. Youre unlikely to get everyone in your community on one single platform together, so youre going to have to get good at different types of digital communication.

If you dont already have a presence on Facebook, I suggest you develop one because thats where a majority of people congregate, in my experience. Both business pages and private groups can be useful in reaching audiences there.

You should also have a direct email list. As much as we dont necessarily engage with email these days due to the sheer volume we receive, this remains an effective channel for getting your message across.

Lastly, look at text message support. Lots of marketing platforms support automated text messaging. A mobile-centric marketing strategy might be overkill for a small gym, so consider having your coaches text and follow up with members on a daily or weekly basis.

Figure out what type of communication your members want to have. Youre going to have to send every message out across multiple channels in order to reach everyone. Developing a good process for how you manage that as well as the queue of responses you receive back is critical.

These three areas of focus are essential to putting your fitness business on the digital road map. Even in these uncertain times, people still need exercise. Fitness is not canceled. Transitioning your business to a digital model will serve you well not only during this crisis, but in the long run.

Make sure the veteran in your life is getting the benefits they deserve – Starts at 60

InMoneyonWednesday3rdJun, 2020

Australia has 641,000 veterans but not all of them know theres an array of entitlements they are due, many of which are vital for good health and wellbeing.

If youre like most Australians, you have a deep respect for the work our defence forces do to protect our beloved country. And if one of your family members or friends is a member of the forces or a veteran, that respect is no doubt combined with a lot of love. We all want the best for our brave servicemen and women and veterans.

Thats why you might be surprised and concerned to learn that many of Australias 641,000 veterans arent aware of the wide range of specialised support services and benefits they earned through their service and so are missing out on assistance that could be vital to their health and wellbeing.

In fact, a 2018 report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare pointed out that although veterans tended to have greater health and welfare needs than non-veterans, there was a real lack of official government data on how veterans accessed the services they needed or even which services were the most helpful.

If you have a veteran in your family or group of mates, you may have noticed yourself that theyre struggling with physical or mental health issues and dont feel particularly supported. But theres now a way you can offer real help, by referring them to Veterans Benefits Australia. Better still, all of these incredible health services are also available online, so you or a loved one can get support from a healthcare professional in the comfort of your own home.

Veterans Benefits is an online platform designed to help former Australian Defence Force (ADF) members discover what services and benefits theyre entitled to, help veterans obtain the necessary government funding to cover the costs associated and to connect them with organisations that provide services and benefits to veterans.

Tom Bailey founded Veterans Benefits in 2016 after he noticed that many ADF veterans struggled to access the free or subsidised treatments available to help them deal with health and wellbeing issues theyd incurred during their time in service.

Youd think that thered be more information out there but even navigating the Department of Veterans Affairs website is pretty complicated, Bailey says. I saw that veterans didnt know what they were entitled to and nowhere for service providers to talk in a safe way to veterans about what they could offer them.

Veterans Benefits is a one-stop-shop for veterans benefits, where users can find a range of entitlements and concessions, including government-subsidised or fully funded exercise and dietary plans, counselling and mental health programs, dental treatment, physiotherapy, medication management services and drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs. Veterans can even apply for funding to have their home cleaned regularly if they struggle to do so themselves.

Bailey says that its often these important health and wellbeing support services that are the most difficult for veterans to access, because qualifying to receive the benefit requires applying for DVA funding.

Suggested replacement quote that removes mental health element:

Sometimes, even if they find out what their entitlements are, going through the layers of bureaucracy needed to pursue a claim for funding is just too hard without someone guiding you through it, he says.

What Is The Best Treatment For Low Testosterone? – Popdust

Low testosterone levels are a very common problem for men - approximately 25 million men in the US suffer from it. Testosterone levels start to decline in men every year after 30. It can decrease between 19% and 39% in older men, which is a substantial amount.

Lower testosterone can cause low energy, low muscle mass, erectile dysfunction, decreased sex drive, brain fog, and more.

Many online healthcare companies have emerged with testosterone level tests to help men figure out if they have low testosterone levels and how to tackle their issues as a result. Vault health, Roman, My Lab Box, and Lets Get Checked seem to be the main contenders.

Our editors compared and contrasted these services to see which one was the best, so if you think you may be suffering from low testosterone, you'll know where to go for help.

Vault Health

With Vault, a medical professional comes to your home to get a blood sample to test. From there, you will be contacted virtually via video call or phone call and based on your results, they will recommend a personalized treatment plan for you. The testosterone treatment can come in many forms such as pills, subcutaneous self-injections, and creams - it's not a one size fits all treatment.

Once you and your Vault provider decide on a treatment it is regularly mailed directly to your door in discreet packaging. You'll receive ongoing support including a check in 6 weeks after starting treatment, and you have 24/7 access to medical practitioners if you have any questions.

Roman

Roman is a well known online healthcare company that treats sexual health problems caused by lowering testosterone levels. They have treatments for some STDs and ED, and have a supplement for testosterone support. This supplement is a hormone free formula and is not meant for men who have been diagnosed with low testosterone, it supports overall health but it is not a solution. It includes ingredients such as Zinc, Magnesium, and Vitamin D3 that help "support the body's natural function." Zinc can raise testosterone a bit, but the other ingredients have not been shown to raise testosterone.

This supplement is available on their website for anyone to buy as an everyday supplement. This testosterone support supplement is backed by doctors, but there are no personal calls or ongoing support that come with it. It is not a personalized treatment like Vault.

My Lab Box

My Lab Box specializes in at home STD tests that you can order online, and they also have a testosterone test. This test is a pain free test you can get delivered to your door. The test takes just 5 minutes, and you get your lab results in 2-5 days. This will let you know if you have low testosterone or not. However, from there, you will have to seek your own treatment as My Lab Box only provides tests.

Let's Get Checked

Let's Get Checked offers a very similar service to My Lab Box. It is a company that you can order tests you can do from your home. They also have a testosterone test. However, Lets Get Checked provides you with more information about how to do the test on their site, stating that a blood sample is collected with a finger prick. You can also subscribe to test your testosterone every 3 months at a 30% discount. Like My Lab box, Lets Get Checked does not offer any treatment plans for low testosterone.

Overall Verdict

Overall, we felt the best service by far is Vault health.

Lets Get Checked and My Lab Box are both affordable services at only $69 for a test. If you think it's unlikely that you have low testosterone but would like to test just for peace of mind, perhaps one of these would be the service for you - but if you do in fact have low testosterone, you will have to seek your own treatment with a doctor. However, they only check total testosterone, whereas Vault checks a whole panel to really evaluate your true hormone status.

Roman's testosterone treatment is essentially a supplement with ingredients that are supposed to help sexual function, libido, and semen quality. However, these results are based only on animals, or only helped humans who actually had a vitamin deficiency. So, essentially, it will not increase testosterone, but it will help you be healthier overall, which will improve your sexual function.

A lot of doctors tend to treat the symptoms of low testosterone, instead of the cause. Vault health is the only service out of these four that provides a complete testosterone test, and actually aims to fix the problem by getting to the root of it and prescribing testosterone treatment that is personalized to your needs. Not only that, they offer continuous support from medical professionals throughout. All of this, from the comfort of your home. Vault is the clear winner.

Vault Health's providers are currently accepting new applicants! Follow this link to get started.

Has there ever been a better time to get healthy and slim down?

Dietitian Bridgett Wilder of Perseverance Health and Wellness Coaching in Milwaukee recommends these 10foods to help unload excess lockdown weight, boost the immune system and give your body what it truly needs.

1. Dry beans, including red kidney, pinto and great northern. They are versatile, economical and high in fiber to keep you fuller longer.

2. Avocado and olive oils. These are healthy fats, according to Wilder. Avocado oil may aid in lowering blood pressure in combination with maintaining a healthy-balanced diet, Wilder said.

3. Low-carb wraps for burritos or eggs. Wilder likes the brand Egglife made with eggs, not flour, at 30 calories with less than 1 carbohydrate and 5 grams of protein per wrap.

4. Colorful fresh vegetables such as eggplant, spinach, sugar snap peas and bell peppers. Wilder uses vegetable slices such as cucumbers instead of nacho chips for salsa and guacamole. She is also a big fan of Brussels sprouts.

5. Low-calorie soups such as broccoli lemon arugula by Skinny Souping to be eaten hot or chilled.

6. Spiralized zucchini, its a great replacement for spaghetti, Wilder explained. These can be made at home with a spiralizer or bought already prepped. Wilder likes Fresh Thymes Fresh Cut Veggies Zucchini Noodles.

7. Seasonal fruit. Find strawberries, blueberries and peaches at farmers markets, U-pick farms and truck sales this summer.

8. Handy pre-packaged, plant-based meat substitutes. Wilder recommends Lightlife Smart Ground Mexican Crumbles, to be browned and used like ground meat, or Uncut brand breakfast sausage that is high in protein.

9. Low-calorie juices to help with snack attacks between meals. Wilder likes Natalies Replenish green juice with cucumber, celery, apple and lime juice. Be careful with juice drinks as many are full of sugar and calories.

10. Plain old water. Keep in mind, water is always a good beverage to help control appetite.

Research suggests that epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), potent antioxidants, can increase fat burning and boost metabolism. Green tea also contains caffeine that boosts energy levels and improves performance during exercise, thereby contributing to better weight loss.

Can I Eat Mangoes If I Am Trying To Lose Weight? Know A Nutritionists Reply – NDTV

Mango for weight loss: Mangoes are rich in fibre and Vitamin C

We all love mangoes! But sadly there are so many misconceptions and mythsaround this fruit that one keeps questioning whether or not to eat them. If you see the nutrition profile of mangoes - fibre, Vitamin C, copper, folate, Vitamins A, E, B5, K and B6, potassium, magnesium, manganese (the list goes on) -you will not question your choice of including them in your daily diet. However, fructose, the naturally present sugar in mangoes is what makes people doubt the king of fruits and refrain from eating them.

According to nutritionist Pooja Makhija, mangoes can be included in weight loss diet. Make sure you eat the mango and don't consume it in the form of shakes or aamras or smoothes. "Stick to eating one mango in a day. Make sure you don't eat it with your meal and it in between and enjoy one mango every day," Makhija says in her Instagram story now saved as highlights.

Nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar agrees. "Mango is not just safe but recommended for people with diabetes and obesity for its rich nutrient profile. It is high on fibre, antioxidants and phytonutrients," she writes in one of her Insta posts.

Mangiferin is a bioactive compound found in mangoes. It has multiple therapeutic benefits and is used in treatment of infections, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. "Worldwide, diabetic associations recommend eating fresh and seasonal fruits including mangoes," mentions Diwekar's Insta post.

Glycemic index of mangoes is 51, which technically qualifies it as low GI food. However, each person responds differently to different foods and if you have diabetes, it is the best to consult your expert before including mangoes or any other fruit in your diet.

1. Eyes and skin: Zeaxanthin and carotene are two compounds which protect the eyes and skin from damage caused by free radicals and ageing.

2. Brain: B vitamins in mangoes can help in production of red blood cells that can help in improving brain function and fat burning.

3. Liver: Phenolic compounds in mangoes can help in preventing liver damage, inflammation and chronic conditions including obesity.
