The foods that boost – and zap – libido – Yahoo Sports

Eating the right foods could improve your sex life. (Getty Images)

Couples are often prepared to go to fairly extreme lengths to keep things interesting in the bedroom.

Many may not realise small dietary tweaks can make a big difference to your libido.

Read more: How a woman can enjoy sex whatever her age

Infamous lothario Casanova is said to have eaten 50 oysters for breakfast, with many hailing the opulent seafood the ultimate aphrodisiac.

While alcohol may help you lose your inhibitions, a line in Macbeth warns it provokes the desire, but takes away the performance.

Oysters

Casanova may have got it right.

Shellfish is thought to be associated with libido as a result of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, rising from the sea.

Aphrodisiac even comes from the name Aphrodite.

Oysters are rich in zinc, which plays a role in the production of testosterone and sperm.

One of the richest sources of zinc is oysters, which have been seen as an aphrodisiac food for centuries and are often associated with romantic suppers between couples actually an occasion that psychologically can help pave the way for a night of passion, Rob Hobson, registered nutritionist and head of nutrition at Healthspan, told Yahoo UK.

Oysters certainly are not everyones cup of tea and not a food you find in your local supermarket, but fear not as its the zinc that counts when it comes to libido.

Whilst they may not seem as sexy, other great sources of zinc include lobster, red meat, nuts, seeds and lentils.

Avocado

The Aztecs reportedly considered avocados a turn on due to how they hang suggestively in pairs from trees.

When you think of avocados, you may just think of them smashed on toast, but theres certainly one possible nutrition benefit that links to their proposed libido-boosting properties, Rosie Long, registered associate nutritionist, told Yahoo UK.

Avocados contain vitamin B6, which helps regulate the activity of our hormones.

Plus, they provide potassium, a nutrient thats vital for maintaining normal blood pressure.

Story continues

Thats great news when things get steamy under the covers.

Bananas are similarly high in vitamin B6 and potassium.

Fruit

A 2016 study by the University of Anglia found men who ate more foods rich in antioxidants called flavonoids were less likely to develop erectile dysfunction.

When specifically looking at fruit, a major source, the scientists discovered a higher intake reduced a mans risk by 14%.

Read more: Up to half of young women feel guilty, embarrassed or stressed over their sex life

Foods rich in flavonoids include berries, citrus fruits, grapes and apples, said Hobson.

Other sources include cocoa powder, tea, red peppers, kale and broccoli.

Ginseng

The popular herbal remedy is frequently used to combat low libido in Chinese medicine, with research increasingly supporting its prescription.

A 2008 study by the Korea Food Research Institute in South Korea found suggestive evidence for the effectiveness of red ginseng in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

The scientists added, however, the quality of the papers they analysed were too low to draw definitive conclusions.

A later study by Chonnam National Universityin South Korea found red ginseng improved sexual arousal in menopausal women.

Chocolate

The Aztecs are said to have considered chocolate a powerful aphrodisiac, however, data supporting its libido-boosting properties is limited.

Nevertheless, enjoying a square or two may help you get in the mood.

Chocolate contains a chemical called threobromine, which is thought to trigger the release of feel good endorphins in the same way that making love does, registered dietitian Juliette Kellow told Yahoo UK.

Plus, it contains phenylethylamine, known as the love drug because levels tend to be higher when were in love.

Good news for chocaholics, but enjoy in moderation.

Almonds

The ancient Romans believed almonds were a symbol of fertility.

In the 14th century, Italians began giving five sugar-coated almonds as wedding favours, each symbolising a quality of a happy marriage: health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity.

Almonds are packed with zinc, which is important for our fertility, said Kellow.

Plus they provide folate, vitamin E and healthy fats.

In 2018, Spanish scientists found men who ate 60g of mixed nuts a day for 14 weeks saw improvements to their sperm count, mobility and vitality.

Alcohol

Shakespeare may have got it right when he wrote Macbeth.

Whilst a couple of drinks may lower inhibitions and make you feel more confident the effects are not always positive when it comes to sex, said Hobson.

Drinking alcohol increases levels of testosterone in women ,which plays a role in sexual desire, but too much may have a negative effect psychologically, and worsen your genital response and physical arousal.

In men, too much booze is well known to cause brewers droop.

Alcohol decreases blood flow to the penis, suppresses the central nervous system and increases a hormone called angiotensin, which all contribute to erectile dysfunction.

As a side note, too much booze can also lead to riskier sexual behaviour, which may be detrimental to your health in many ways.

Kellow even said alcohol can be your worst enemy when it comes to sex.

Drinking one too many on date night may just send you to sleep early, while regularly drinking excessive amounts of alcohol over a longer period can significantly reduce your sex drive, she said.

Salt

Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure, which eventually damages vessels, causing them to thicken.

The effect of this is restricted blood flow to the penis, which in turn may lead to erectile dysfunction in men, said Hobson.

Processed fatty foods

We all know overindulging in junk food will cause us to pile on the pounds.

Being overweight is linked to type 2 diabetes, a leading cause of erectile dysfunction.

Eating an unhealthy diet can have an impact on your health in more ways than you may think, said Long.

In fact, a diet high in unhealthy saturated fats has been linked to an interference in reproductive health and sperm quality.

Eating too much saturated fat also increases the risk of developing heart disease, which in turn can impact libido.

What – it turns out – is actually wrong with me – Durango Telegraph

The question left unanswered for most of my life has been, What is wrong with you? often with an expletive in the middle. (Which is the underlying message in all its thuggish cousins, Thats a dumb idea, youre stupid, youre worthless, etc. etc.) At first, I thought there was nothing wrong with me. I was very young, I am looking up at a glowering adult, showering profanity, anger and spittle upon a defenseless child. Wrong with me? More likely, I thought, theres something wrong with you. But as the grownups, and not-so grownups, and other authority figures usually red faced and highly agitated kept yelling it at me, my self esteem began to erode. I decided maybe there was something wrong with me. Now, a lifetime later, I think Im getting a handle on it. No wonder I turned out this way. Just yesterday I saw an ad for a health club that warned should I not join, I would never recapture my awesome. So thats why I havent been feeling well, my awesome is low? Could that have contributed to my lifelong problem? I would love to recapture even part of my awesome. Trouble is, the health club is in Miami. Im in Colorado. Maybe worldwide advertising needs to tweak their own awesome. Nevertheless, it got me thinking. How long has it been since I had good awesome? Could I overdo it and recapture too much awesome? Or is it like testosterone replacement? A lot of glowing promises but not much difference in performance. Obviously, I needed answers.

My well-meaning friend, when asked the burning question of awesome, told me solemnly, John, you need to own your truth. She had to be kidding. I can barely afford to rent my truth, and even then, only an efficiency truth. Sky-rocketing prices in the truth market have driven owning your truth out of the range of most people. I think this may be one of the problems in todays society. Too few people own their own truth. Most are renting their truth and slipping further and further into debt. Owing a fortune on truth has become commonplace. So has substandard truth or no truth at all. This is no joke.

It is a sad commentary on our times. Truth seems out of reach for most people. The greater question is, why do those who clearly can afford a huge truth, a truth with an entrance hall and a grand staircase, who, if they wanted, could afford a whole bunch of truths, why do these people seem the least likely to own any truth at all?

I asked my other friend, (yes, just two). He said, John, you need to control your own narrative.

Narrative used to be a pretentious way of saying story or a less pretentious way of saying recounting of continuous events. Now Im not sure what it means. Perhaps this is more evidence of what is wrong with me, I dont speak the language. How do fatalists control their narrative? Is it just an illusion of control, the outcome having actually been pre-destined? What about free will? Is every turn in our narrative meaningful to the final outcome? Are we frighteningly responsible for our own actions? Does the free will narrative more favor Descartes or Kant? What if I throw narrative control under the figurative bus? Is that what happened to The Godfather Part III? Im getting a headache here.

So what is wrong with me? Damned if I know. Maybe its a translation problem. Maybe recapture your awesome is newspeak for self-esteem. Maybe own your truth is self-help for recognize and be responsible for your own actions. Maybe control yournarrative is dumbing down-speak for life is the result of decisions you make. Act on your life; dont react to others view of it. Is this their meaning? Then why dont they just say so?

I was yelled at a lot growing up, too much. But I also learned important lessons from kind, concerned adults. Dont hurt others, dont be selfish, dont judge. Tell the truth, be responsible, help out. You are a good and worthy person. Give to others, give time, money, attention, love. My mother would say, I love you, John, but sometimes I dont love the things that you do. The lesson there is profound. It is not, What is wrong with you? it is, Why did you do that? So why cant people say this instead of jumping on the next buzz word to come down the linguistic pike? The lessons instilled in me have worked for centuries. Dressing them up in some gibberish de jour seems to be the fashion. Is it working? Does society seem more or less honorable, respectful, responsible than it did a generation or two ago? People want to sound current, they want to sound woke. (Yech.) But lost in translation is not just a phrase.

The next time I am asked, What is wrong with you? I have the answer. Ive often wondered the same thing and here is my conclusion. Though damaging a childs self-esteem is easy and can last a lifetime, it need not be a permanent scar. There are many ways to repair and rebuild your self-esteem. The tools are embedded in our society. Theyre in schools, in houses of worship. Theyre in service organizations and in therapy. Use them. Try to find people who understand them and know how to use them. Avoid those whose own self-esteem is wrecked and who find solace only in trying to destroy others. We are all damaged to some extent, but it is not a permanent condition. We can all be healed. But you have to do it. It is your responsibility, like all the decisions you make.

And if that doesnt work, Ill say, I am owning the truth of my own awesome narrative. If that dont shut em up, nothing will.

Men Have More Severe Coronavirus Symptoms. What About Boys? – Fatherly

Men and women have the same risk of contracting COVID-19, but what happens after they get infected varies with sex. Men are more likely to get severely ill from the disease and are 2.4 times more likely to die, according to a recent study. A complex mix of factors, including biology and lifestyle, put men in harms way. Like father, like son, do boys share that risk?

Probably not. So far, the evidence doesnt point to it, says Susan Hassig, an epidemiologist at Tulane University School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine. Young boys dont have a lot of risk, she says.

One study from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that boys are slightly more likely than girls to get COVID-19. Yet this conclusion is unreliable. Because of the way the study was conducted, its impossible to tell whether their sample reflects reality, though Hassig doubts it. I am not aware of any biologic factors that would make boys at more risk of coronavirus infection than girls, she says.

Though girls and boys may be on an equal playing field in terms of the coronavirus, boys, in general, pick up more infectious diseases and have more severe responses to them, according to a 2014 study. Girls and women have stronger immune systems a double-edged sword. They are more likely to have autoimmune disorders, but they are also less likely to contract many infectious diseases and get severely ill from them.

This Year, Mothers Day matters to your family...

More than ever

Less than ever

About the same

Thanks for the feedback!

Girls and womens stronger immune systems are largely due to genetics and sex hormones. Females have two copies of the X chromosome, which contains many immune-related genes, while males only have one. And estrogen, more abundant in women, boosts the immune system, but testosterone slightly suppresses it. Thats why some doctors are running trials in which they treat male COVID-19 patients with estrogen and progesterone, another sex hormone higher in women, according to the New York Times.

Men may also get more severely ill from COVID-19 because they have a higher blood concentration of a protein that helps the virus enter healthy cells, according to a new study in older adults with heart failure.

Social factors also make men more likely to develop severe COVID-19 if infected. Men in the U.S. smoke more than women, and smoking increases the risk, according to a new study. Men are also less likely to wash their hands, including after using the bathroom, coughing and sneezing, and handling money. They are 50 percent less likely than women to use non-pharmaceutical methods to protect themselves, such as avoiding crowds and wearing masks, during respiratory disease epidemics and pandemics, according to a 2016 study.

What is true for mens behavior is not necessarily true for boys under the watchful eyes of their parents. And in general, children who get COVID-19 handle the disease well. Few get severely sick, and many are asymptomatic and dont even realize they have the disease. As the data comes in, could this understanding change? Experts dont have a definitive grasp on the question of boys or girls with the data available, so yes, it may turn out boys are at higher risk. But it may not really matter. Even if boys are more likely to get seriously sick, their overall risk would be low because the risk for kids is low. So teach your son healthy habits, and keep an eye out for worrying symptoms and focus on dads health. Hes the one who is at greater risk.

Bear It All Fitness announces closing due to pandemic – Greater Milwaukee Today

MUKWONAGO As businesses begin to reopen under new guidelines or wait for the Safer at Home order to be lifted, one small Mukwonago business announced they are permanently closing their doors because of the pandemic.

Bear It All Fitness in downtown Mukwonago, which offered a variety of barre classes and hybrid workout classes, announced its closing on Facebook mid-April.

The fairly new business opened December 9, 2019, and closed not even two months later, on March 14, 2020 because of the coronavirus with free classes temporarily offered online.

The business was owned by Ashlee Rybak and her husband John Rybak.

Ashlee Rybak said closing ultimately came down to bad timing.

We had a lot of interest and a growing community from as far as Milwaukee and Delafield, with many classes having to waitlist because they were getting so popular, she said.

Rybak said despite this, she decided to close the store March 14 because she noticed schools were closing and thought it would benefit her in the long run. When Safer at Home was issued, she then learned there would be no business at all.

I started doing free fitness classes from the studio on YouTube, Facebook Live and Zoom to keep my community together and keep their fitness up during an uncertain time, hoping it would be a few weeks only, Rybak said.

Rybak said she tried applying for some government assistance, but because she was so new and had such little revenue, she didnt receive any help. She also decided not to apply for loans because of her projections about the pandemics lingering effects.

I was so uncertain, she said. I put so much into starting this business capital, time, energy and passion. However, my instincts told me that not only would this not be blowing over anytime soon, but that when it did my business would continue to suffer. We market group fitness classes, but we sell community. If people are afraid to be by other people we wouldnt be able to make any revenue from our classes.

Rybak said while closing her business is disappointing, the community has been very uplifting.

At first it was emotionally overwhelming how many people offered to donate money to keep us afloat, who said we created their happy place and who were just really upset to see us go, Rybak said. When we held our closing sale so many (members) of our community came out to help us clear out and to say goodbye.

Rybak said she is unsure of what her future holds, as she has three children that she may end up homeschooling if schools do not reopen in the fall.

As for other local business owners, Rybak said she appreciates what they offer the community and continues to support them in any way she can.

We are purchasing teacher appreciation gifts from local businesses, have gotten take out from them, went to local greenhouses for our plants and garden and bought gift cards for future enjoyment, she said. I will continue to encourage others to do the same.

Rybak said she wanted to thank the Mukwonago Chamber of Commerce, H2C Commercial Real Estate and all the members of the studio that supported the belief in their vision for Bear It All Fitness.

Rybak said she is hosting free Zoom backyard barre at 9:15 a.m. every Saturday and encourages people in the community to join her by checking the Bear It All Fitness Facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/bearitallwi.

Fitness that can fit into any schedule – News – Wilkes-Barre Citizens Voice

Online Workouts

Many people are staying home, increasing their chances of avoiding the coronavirus while obeying lockdown orders from the government.

Just because gyms and fitness centers have temporarily closed, however, doesnt mean members health should suffer as a result.

Instructors at the Friedman Jewish Community Center in Kingston have been conducting exercise classes of varying difficulties and sharing them in live videos on Facebook.

The response has been so positive, CEO Gary Bernstein said, that he anticipates the JCC continuing this way of physical activity even when things return to normal.

We are always looking to connect with our members and add value to their membership, Bernstein said. In light of this crazy pandemic, one of our more successful ways is by doing these classes which really seem to have hit a very popular chord because the people reached are close to 1,000 for every class. Its crazy, the response that were getting for these classes. I think people enjoy working out in the comfort of their own home.

The JCC offers three virtual fitness classes per day, Monday through Friday, starting at 9 a.m. and continuing through the afternoon. They are available for members and nonmembers.

Tai chi, which is recorded at 9 a.m. Monday with instructor Doreen Rakowski, is one of the more popular options for seniors.

Even though youre not lifting weights, your whole body is keeping active and in motion, said Athletic Director Kevin Harcarik.

Weights are not required for most classes, instead using a persons body weight or household items like a chair.

Pretty much all of our classes are dumbed down in a way, so youre able to do it with the instructor, Harcarik said. If you cant do it, skip that little part. Theyll move on and youll be able to do something.

All of the JCCs virtual lessons can be viewed at facebook.com/FriedmanJCC.

Home exercise

tips for seniors

Do some light activity like easy walking before and after any endurance-based activities, such as yard work or climbing stairs, to warm up and cool down. Its also recommended that you drink liquids when doing any activity that causes you to sweat.

When lifting weights or using a resistance band, do not hold your breath. Breathe out as you lift or push. Breathe in as you relax.

When practicing a balancing exercise, such as standing on one foot and then the other, keep a sturdy chair nearby or hold onto it if you feel unsteady.

Before stretching, make sure your muscles are warmed up. Dont hurt yourself by stretching too far.

If you are unsure about doing a particular exercise, talk to your doctor.

Listen to your body.

Building community helps Houston fitness instructor stay inspired while inspiring others – Houston Chronicle

Renata Holland, 35, works full-time in accounting, and like many Houstonians, shes been working at home for the last several weeks, along with her husband, Clint, with their 22-month-old son, Richard, in tow.

She holds several fitness certifications, and pre-quarantine, she had been teaching two to three classes per week at three LA Fitness locations after work and on the weekends.

When LA Fitness closed its Houston locations in mid-March, Holland thought the closure would only last a week or two. Once it became clear that it would be longer, she signed up for a Zoom account and began offering some of her normal classes via the application from her Heights-area home.

Holland is used to having company when she works out. Before the pandemic, she had been coaching a group of half-marathoners for Runners High Club. And she worked with several other runners, training for the Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati, which was set to take place on May 3 and was ultimately canceled.

The race would have been my first marathon in five years, and I was really excited to be putting in the training for it, she said.

However, Hollands training came to a halt with the cancellation, and she found herself lacking the motivation to run more than two to four miles on her own once social distancing guidelines were put into place.

Now her classes are inspiring her, as well as other lapsed runners.

"Renatas classes have helped me build back up the endurance I had lost from not running due to injury, and she's been great about encouraging us to modify any exercises if we need to, said Jessica Gomez, 39. Each class has been fun, challenging and easy to follow, and I'm now injury-free and am running stronger."

For Holland, creating a space to be able to maintain a sense of community among her workout crew has helped to lift her spirits and maintain confidence.

Being able to connect with people through these classes has provided a huge mental health boost for me during this whole situation, she said. Getting a workout in and seeing friends at the same time is definitely a win-win for me.

She created a makeshift studio with lights and an iPad in her home office, and once she saw increased interest, she added to her class line-up. Holland advertises her classes on her Instagram and Facebook accounts, giving a brief description of any special themes and providing the Zoom participation link and password upon request. More than 100 people have registered for her classes, and she has hosted anywhere from five to 25 participants at a time, with most being either her friends or clients from LA Fitness.

Ill usually tell my Zumba attendees that I just want them to move to the music, even if theyre doing so from their chairs, rather than trying to copy my moves, she said.

Monday, 12:30 p.m.: Zumba

Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.: Power Circuit

Wednesday, 12:30 p.m.: Lunch Abs

Thursday, 12:30 p.m.: Power Circuit

Friday, 12:30 p.m.: Stretch and Flow

Friday, 5:30 p.m.: Zumba

Saturday, 8 p.m.: Club Zumba

While its definitely a huge bonus if anyone gains some extra fitness out of my classes, Im mainly just hoping to provide an escape and help give people a little break from the current reality were in, she said.

That escape has been a big boost for some of her clients, including Patty Trussell, a 37-year-old recruiting coordinator.

During these times of quarantine and uncertainty, I've really appreciated Renata's enthusiasm and dedication in motivating others to challenge themselves by working out, Trussell said. Not only do I feel stronger than I did before the quarantine, but I am also seeing some little muscles on my arms, which I never had before. But most importantly, I'm having fun."

Holland plans to offer her classes eve after she is able to return to the gym, teaching Zoom classes a few days a week while she continues to work from home for her full-time job. Shell also head back to LA Fitness when it reopens; while gyms will be allowed to reopen beginning May 18, Holland said LA Fitness has tentative plans to start up again later this month, but has not yet announced an official date.

To view Hollands updated class schedule and request access to her classes, visit her Instagram account at instagram.com/zumbarunner262.

Healthy at Home: Workouts from Northeast Ohio fitness studios – WKYC.com

There's no excuse to let your fitness routine slide while staying at home. Maureen Kyle shows us how you can get on demand workouts.

CLEVELAND It can be intimidating to try a new type of workout. But with gyms streaming their specialty, this is the perfect time to try something new from the comfort of your own home.

I think it's only natural to be intimidated when you're trying something new in general. And I think people misunderstand barre as a dance class and it's not. It's really just a strengthening exercise to tempo to music, says Colleen Haddad, owner of Westside Barre.

Barre classes are a popular way to strengthen long and lean muscles. Colleen says she's seen more and more new clients hop onto her streamed classes, giving them a way to try this light-weight high rep workout with a sense of privacy.

We are providing extra cues right now, since we can't hands on assist and adjust. So, just pay attention to our cues and peep around every once in a while. It's really just about listening at this point and doing the best and if you feel something hurting, change it up.

Need something with a punch? Now's the time to try boxing.

Just the fact that it's left brain, right brain, it's creative, it's fun, it's whole body, says Title Boxing Clubs RJ

Westlake's Title Boxing Club puts workouts on demand on Facebook and YouTube. And even though there aren't the bags to punch, the light on your feet shadow boxing will have you working on both cardio and muscle definition.

You think of fighting, boxers or mixed martial artists, there's definitely an endurance and stamina factor. It's heart and lungs - all day pumping oxygen.

Or maybe you've always heard of a studio that offers a combination of classes - like Grooveryde.

The first week, we had 250 people log in, says founder Anjua Maximo, What it's telling us is there are two audiences to service.

This studio provides a variety of classes to take and is seeing people from all over the country try their workouts from near and far.

We were seeing guests that literally moved to Florida or moved across the country. They were trying it. And then we were seeing guests who were finding us - like one woman was coming in from Costa Rica - wild!

Both GrooveRyde and Westside Barre say they will keep streaming their classes even after gyms are allowed to open, because theyve seen working parents be able to jump into a live stream. All three gyms admit, this is changing the way they do business.

Early Warning: Behind The ‘Gut Wrenching’ Decision To Cancel The Arnold Fitness Expo – ideastream

The decision to bar spectators from the Arnold Sports Festival started with a message from Houston.

For the past 40 years, thousands of energy sector types have gathered in Houston for a major conference called CERAWeek. They come from all around the world, but on March 1, organizers canceled the event because of fears about the spread of the coronavirus.

A Houston public health official sent the announcement to Dr. Mysheika Roberts, Columbuss health commissioner. She forwarded the message on to Mayor Andrew Ginthers chief of staff.

Her email was one line: We need to chat about the Arnold.

You know, you go with your gut instinct, and I woke up the morning of March 2, and said I dont feel comfortable having a large scale event like this in my community, Roberts says now.

In hindsight, it was an easy call. But 10 weeks ago, the cancellation of the Arnold Fitness Expo was a sudden and extraordinary decision.

Ohio had yet to see a single confirmed case of COVID-19 when Ohio and Columbus officials decided to drastically pare back one of the citys premier events. Public records obtained by WOSU help illuminate how officials arrived at what they call a gut wrenching decision.

"A Tremendous Pressure"

March 2 was a Monday, and the Arnold was set to kick off just two days later. Tens of thousands of fans would flood into the Greater Columbus Convention Center and the state fairgrounds.

For weeks, Roberts had been working on safety plans with the organizers. Monday afternoon, ahead of a conference call, Brent LaLonde from the Arnold told representatives at Experience Columbus, Coronavirus is quickly turning into a PR crisis.

Thousands had already signed anonline petitiondemanding it be canceled. "The Arnold event will bring thousands people from over 80 countries to Columbus Ohio," the petition read. "This will significantly increase the risk of Coronavirus spreading in Ohio."

The city planned a Tuesday morning press conference to announce new safety measures, which included barring athletes from global coronavirus hotspots like China and Italy. Teams from Columbus Public Health and Mount Carmel Health System would screen athletes at the airport, at registration, and at each event.

The convention center would have hand sanitizers every 20 feet. Mount Carmel Health System was ready to treat COVID-19 patients.

Still, minutes before the press conference, Gov. Mike DeWine began having misgivings.

As I recall, I called the mayor and said, 'Hey, Im rethinking this thing. I think you and I need to talk some more about this, we need to really kind of take a deep look at this,'" DeWine says. "And I suspect thats when he canceled the press conference.

The mayor, the governor, their staffs and their public health teams spent hours that Tuesday in a conference room going over the situation. They knew the economic cost: the Arnold generates $53 million for the local economy every year.

At the time, other big spring events around the country were still a go, including the South by Southwest music festival and big trade shows in Orlando, Atlanta and Las Vegas.

Roberts and Ohio Department of Health director Amy Acton laid out the public health case. Roberts says she knew the stakes were high for the governor and the mayor.

You know, they had that additional weight on them, so I felt a tremendous amount of pressure to provide my scientific expertise and to make sure that it was accurate and right, because they were making decision based on what Dr. Acton and I thought from a public health standpoint, Roberts says.

While they worried about athletes arriving from countries already experiencing community spread, it became apparent that large crowds were the greater issue.

Right away, Ginther said, the Arnold Expo, a large trade show connected with the competition, looked like too great a risk.

Now, initially what the governor and I were going to do were to issue separate orders, Ginther explains. CPH would issue orders for those within the jurisdiction of Columbus and CPH, and the state would issue orders for the fairgrounds and the Expo Center that are clearly under the purview of the governor.

But Ginther says he and the governor stepped out into the hall, and after a brief conversation determined the better course was to speak with one voice.

"A No-Brainer"

DeWine and Ginther announced their decision at a Tuesday night press conference.

We have all decided to move forward with the athlete competition at the Arnold classic, DeWine told reporters, but not to allow spectators or the trade show to continue.

They held up a cell phone so the festivals namesake, former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, could lend his support and speak to reporters as well. He said organizers didn't want to put people at risk.

The next day, however, Schwarzenegger sent a letter attempting to reverse course and allow spectators to attend the events. He argued that othereventsin Ohio had no such restrictions, including then-scheduled games for March Madness, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Columbus Blue Jackets.

"There is no explanation to allow all these other events with 20,000 fans to continue while not allowing us to sell tickets to a few thousand sports fans to watch our various different sports," he wrote.

Daniel Ketchell, Schwarzenegger's chief of staff, said Wednesday that our plan is to have spectators at the event, barring some type of emergency order."

DeWine and Ginther held their ground. In a letter Thursday, the two officials warned Arnold organizers to abide by the initial agreement.

"In the event that organizers fail to comply with our agreement, we stand ready to take appropriate action under Ohio law," they wrote.

That day, Acton issued a public health order prohibiting spectators at all but eight of the festival's events.

You second guess yourself, I second guess myself many, many times, DeWine now says of the decision, adding with a chuckle, it was physically, you know, just tough."

DeWine believes they made the right call. He says his kids and grandkids experience in track and field made him sensitive to the perspective of athletes.

In the weeks to come, the middle course they landed on became a model for NCAA and high school competitions that were eventually canceled as well.

DeWine and Ginther both credit their public health officials, and highlight an argument about hindsight that Acton and Roberts made during their deliberations.

This is a really tough decision today, but a week or two from now it will look like a no-brainer, Ginther recalls the doctors telling them. And thatIve heard, and been reminded of, and confirmed over, and over, and over again.
