It is believed that our body can 'get used' to a certain weight and try to keep this weight. Maybe this is what prevents many people from losing weight. According to a new study published in the journal Lancet EClinicalMedicine, the body can be 'tricked' with a weighted vest.
Earlier, Swedish scientists from the University of Gothenburg have put forward the theory that the metabolism of a person or animal can adjust to its weight. Scientists called this system a 'gravitostat'. It is designed to keep weight within certain limits. And animal studies have shown that weight is maintained through hormones that regulate appetite.
In a new study, the same group of scientists checked whether the theory of the 'gravitostat' is valid for people and whether it is possible to 'deceive' this mechanism with the help of weighted vests.
The study involved 69 people with mild obesity (body mass index 30-35). Half of the participants wore vests weighing 1 kilogram for 8 hours a day, the other half wore vests weighing 11 kilograms. The study participants were not supposed to do additional exercises, they were given the recommendation to live as usual.
After three weeks, people who wore light vests lost an average of 300 grams, and those who wore heavy ones lost an average of 1.6 kilograms. Moreover, weight loss occurred due to adipose tissue. Scientists have also compared the amount of fat loss with weight loss, which is usually achieved after some physical training.
The authors of the study plan to further make sure that wearing a weighted vest can actually contribute to the loss of excess weight over a longer period of time. They are also going to find out what exactly affects weight loss: a decrease in appetite, an increase in energy expenditure, or other factors.

The following tips for quitting alcohol are aimed at people who aren't happy with how much they're drinking and would like to drastically cut down on or give up alcohol altogether. If you're already happy with just the occasional glass of wine, you probably don't need this advice. On the other hand, if you're a very heavy drinker and think you have alcohol dependency, you should always seek professional medical advice before attempting to quit.
There are endless benefits to giving up alcohol. From improved mood and better sleep to more money in your bank account. Of course, giving up drinking is a personal choice, and you may have your own reasons for wanting to give up, but here are some hard facts that'll help reaffirm your decision:
How to give up drinking is really dependent on how regularly and how much you drink. The more regularly you drink, the harder it'll be to give up, so be prepared for a long process. Give yourself at least a year to give up completely, and don't beat yourself up if you slip up now and then when out with friends. All of the following tips are aimed at making it easy(ier) for you to quit, rather than relying on superhuman levels of willpower.
1. Stop buying alcohol
If you regularly buy a bottle of wine for dinner, it's unrealistic to expect yourself not to reach for said bottle when it's in the fridge in the kitchen. Especially if you have a completist personality (i.e. you have to finish what you started), make sure there's no alcohol readily available in the house, except on special occasions. If this is too difficult, start buying half bottles or mini bottles, which most supermarkets stock these days. Shopping online at the moment? Don't order wine in bulk, tempting as it may be.
2. Buy expensive alcohol
How much do you spend on alcohol a week? Add up the cost of all the bottles and get in the habit of getting just one expensive bottle with that amount instead. Developing a taste for fine wine may sound counterintuitive, but the higher the price of your booze, the less likely you'll be to buy it often.
3. Set yourself a realistic timeline
Don't expect your desire to drink to evaporate overnight. Instead, try drinking half the amount you have been in the first month; then slash it again the next month, and so on, until you go down to little or no drinking. Do this over six to 12 months.
4. Prepare yourself for questions
It's likely that while you're giving up drinking, you'll get a lot of 'why?' questions. If they make you uncomfortable, it may be easier to prepare generic answers in advance (e.g. 'I'm training for a marathon'), rather than feeling the need to explain your reasons in detail.
5. Start a reward piggy bank
If giving up alcohol feels a little like punishment, make it into a reward instead by saving up the money you would've spent on booze for something you've wanted for a while. Make sure you buy it, too!
6. Get into cooking
For some people, a glass of wine is partly a way of making a routine meal a bit more fun. If you're trying to give up drinking, it makes sense to try and vary your meals a little by buying a nice cookbook and experimenting in the kitchen.
7. Get an accountability partner
People are social creatures and are much more likely to accomplish their goals when they feel they're doing it together with someone else. This doesn't mean you have to tell everyone you know you're giving up drinking; just one close friend is enough.While in lockdown, schedule regular video calls to discuss your progress.
8. Don't feel bad if you don't hit your targets
To reiterate: giving up drinking is not a form of punishment for how 'bad' you've been. If you have a setback (a birthday or a wedding, for example), be kind to yourself and move on. it's all the other days you didn't drink that week/month that matter.
9. Join a recovery programme
Speak to your GP to see what they recommend, but while you're waiting for an appointment, investigate Alcoholics Anonymous as a first port of call.

This one here is gross and not popular in this region, however, desperation can cause anything. This involves ingesting tapeworms that, in turn, digest 50% of the food you consume and you get a visible result in days while eating whatever you like.Now, the process of ingesting the tapeworm is what is creeping me out. You have to eat up rotten meat or even faeces that is infected with tapeworms. I should probably stop here; I trust Nigerians not to try this.
However, there are people who would go any length to lose weight, and obvious risk include infections and God knows what else. On a lighter note, there might be a less creepy way of ingesting the tapeworm, but you wont read that in this article. It defeats the purpose. Bye.
Slimming tea
I will tell you this one for free. Most of these slimming teas are a sham. You pay N10,000 for a slimming tea because a popular celeb is the brand ambassador and the customer care rep instructed you not to eat before noon and after 6 pm while using the tea and you think its working? The cause of your weight loss here is the intermittent fasting, not the tea. Next time you think of buying slimming teas, you probably buy almonds to munch on while on your intermittent fasting.
Purging or induced vomiting
Do I need to expatiate on this? Youll only lose water weight with this and after a day youre back to your round, surplus plummy self.Lets be serious, losing water weight is not worth all that purging and vomiting.
Fruit or juice fast
This diet method has proving to be very effective and you see the visible result within 10 days; however, it might not be the safest as the body might not get all the nutrient and calories it needs. This diet method needs to be properly researched to know what fruits to eat and what quantity and duration. It can be counter-productive if the body gives an impression of false weight loss.
Keto
Theres a debate on the health implications of a ketogenic diet. Even with its popularity, eating all that fat and no carb will definitely have its effects. My advice? See a nutritionist to know what is best for you.

The Zone Diet is a meal plan where each meal is broken up so that it contains 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 30% fat. This differs from a traditional Western diet because youre eating slightly fewer carbs, more protein, and less fat.
The boost in protein and fewer carbs are meant to help you keep your blood sugar levels stable, reduce inflammation, and lose fat at the fastest possible rate, according to the diets proponents and founder Barry Sears.
However, some experts are sceptical of the Zone Diet. And while limiting carbs has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels, theres no evidence that the Zone Diet, specifically, is superior to other fad diets.
The Zone Diet does not exclude any food groups. However, in order to burn fat as quickly as possible, proponents of the diet say that you must reduce inflammation throughout your body.
Therefore, the foods you should and should not eat are based on whether or not they may cause inflammation and blood sugar spikes.
The Zone diet offers an easy way to remember some of its rules like its hand method. The number 5 like the five fingers on your hand represents 3 meals a day, plus 2 snacks, and also reminds you never to go more than 5 hours in between meals.

Harris-Pincus adds that any nutritious diet will lead to improvements in blood sugar and inflammation and may also help you lose weight. So, you dont have to follow the carbs-protein-fat ratio of the Zone Diet to achieve those results.
Its unlikely that following the diet would cause real harm, says Harris-Pincus, but the bans on certain foods dont seem to make sense health-wise.
Any diet that discourages consumption of foods known to be beneficial to human health concerns me, Harris-Pincus says, adding that the diet discourages eating many different fruits and whole grains, which as part of a balanced diet reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
There has been very little research on the Zone Diet, and the small studies that exist dont live up to all of the diets claims of improvements in blood sugar, reduced inflammation, or weight loss. For example, a small 3-week study from 2004 found that people on the Zone Diet showed no added improvement in blood sugar or weight reduction compared with people eating their regular diets.
Admittedly 3 weeks is a short time. However, two other studies found that people who were overweight who followed the Zone Diet for a year did not improve blood sugar levels and only led to only 3.5 pounds in weight loss.
If the Zone Diet fits with your lifestyle, there is no harm in trying it, says Harris-Pincus. However, you may want to alter the diet to leave in healthy carbs like whole grains and fruits or opt for a healthier eating plan thats actually recommended by experts like the DASH diet or Mediterranean diet.

On the newest episode of The View, Meghan McCain opened up about her biggest fear and its pretty surprising! According to the conservative pundit, the thing she fears most is receiving backlash over not shedding the baby weight fast enough after giving birth!
As you might know, Meghan is pregnant with her first baby and it so happened that the topic of discussion on The View earlier today was celebrity weight loss!
Whoopi Goldberg started the conversation focused on Adeles incredible transformation given the fact that the singer has dropped no less than 100 pounds.
The star just shared a picture from her birthday celebration in which she was showing off her new fit frame while wearing a little black dress that put her legs and tiny waist on display.
Whoopi argued that there is something about the reaction to Adeles weight that validates the fact that you need to be thin to be valued in this world. And it kind of confirms all of the fears women like me have that if only Id lose 30 something pounds maybe the media would love me more.
Meghan then shared her view on this, saying that: I was talking to my sister in law and was telling her that one of the weird parts about being pregnant during this pandemic is that the world does not get to see my body changing because you guys only see me from the waist up. And one of my biggest fears when we hope to come back to the show, is the medias reaction will be to the weight I gain being pregnant and then if I do not lose it fast enough.

She went on to stress once again that her worst fear at the moment is unrelated to the election or politics in general but rather how the media is going to react to her bodys transformation after having her baby.

I am sure you heard before of how much laughing is beneficial for you. It relives stress, lifts your mood and it even reduces chances of heart diseases. But did you know that laughing can also help you lose weight? It is true, laughing can actually help you lose a few kilos. Do you think you will ever diet again?
1. Laughing boosts metabolism.
Laughing allows the brain to release the beneficial chemicals into your body regularly. This will boost your metabolism, which in turn will burn calories, proving that laughing can help you lose weight.
2. It also tones your stomach.

Wild turkeys displaying fields are thinning out as many of the recently fertilized females are now on their nests. Frustrated, polygamous males are walking farther to find the dwindling number of still-unfertilized, potential mates.
Exchanging my shotgun and crossbow for binoculars, I took the opportunity every morning this past week to closely observe the testosterone-driven males bizarre wattles that decorate their necks.
The red, white, and blue, naked, wrinkled and bulgy wattle skin isnt just a patriotic color combination. Its actually a very functional courting ornament for numerous species of male birds, including roosters and pheasants.
Wattles vary greatly. Large wattles correlate with peak maturity, high testosterone levels and good nutrition. They consequently advertise a sexy, healthy male and help turn on females. Young jakes have small, less impressive wattles.
During hot months, those highly vascularized pouches of skin, which are then predominantly white, can also help reflect and release heat. And now, when males are breeding, blood flow can engorge them so much in moments of excitement that they turn fire engine red for even greater sexual attraction. If I werent studying them to write about, Id be putting them on this weeks menu.
Successful turkey hunts have meant many delicious meals of supremely healthy meat that contains no man-injected hormones or anti-biotics that we find ubiquitous on our market shelves. And preparation is easy.
In quickly dressing their birds, many turkey hunters just fillet out the breasts. Most discard the highly tendinous, tough legs. But they shouldnt.
Those tough legs can be surprisingly delicious. I asked both my son and son-in-law, who were each successful in taking turkeys last week, to save their legs for me. Oakham bow hunter Rob Toupin taught me how cooking them and deer shanks in low heat for three to four hours in a crock pot will produce succulent, tender meat that can be easily pulled off the tendons. Dark meat is always more flavorful than white meat.
As for the breasts, its hard to top slicing off broad, thin pieces, then pounding them between wax paper to a uniform, pancake width, which allows for even, quick cooking. Just give them an egg wash, dip them in Panko, and saut them briefly in butter. Theres no simpler, quicker or more delicious way to serve them.
Turkey season continues through May 23. Forest walkers would be prudent to safely wear orange each morning till then.
Creatures of spring
This week, baby robins hatched, and mothers secretly carried away their shells and droppings. Red trilliums blossomed along with apple trees. Newly emergent, highly variable shades of young green thrilled our eyes.
Just as we were drawn outdoors by the high-70-degree temperatures, ants were drawn indoors, exploring countertops and floor board boundaries. Female mosquitoes searched for blood, and blackflies found many human faces to aggravate.
Sitting under a tree for a sundowner by our fire pit, I had several baby caterpillars and other insect larvae fall on me. No wonder the migrant songbirds from the jungles are returning en masse from the tropics.
To our regret, not all the caterpillars are good, though. Reader Pamela Shanley sent in photos of duct tape she just placed around her oak trees to protect them from gypsy moths, which are hatching on the ground right now and climbing up to eat fresh, tender, most nutritious baby leaves. While their population may be down this year, its worth killing every gypsy moth caterpillar we can. A single female can lay from 500-2,000 eggs.
Pamela annually wages war against them, even banding her neighbors together to fight the endless war. She recommends that this week we overlap three or four layers of duct tape around the trees inside out so the sticky part captures the instinctively climbing larvae. Once the tape is full of stuck caterpillars, Pamela applies new strips right over the used tape, which she totally removes from her trees in mid- to late June.
Here come shad
The number of shad passing over the Holyoke dam on the Connecticut River has been very impressive, considering how early the season is. Some 7,291 shad passed over on May 4 alone. Big game recreational fishermen may be surprised to learn that NOAA adjusted the 2020 tuna daily limits. Private, permitted vessels are allowed two bluefin from 27 to less than 47 inches, and one 47 to less than 73 inches. Anglers can additionally catch and release or tag and release bluefin tuna of all size. Were counting on those latter anglers to be ethically responsible and handle those fish in a manner that will maximize their survivability without removing the fish from the water.
Permitted charter boats will now be able to take three school tuna (27-47 inches) and one large tuna 47-73 inches. Head or party boats will be able to take six school tuna and two large ones. Some local charter boat captains think this increased limit is too high and blame the vocal and politically influential charter boat lobby down south.
The commercial limits have yet to be set. Last year was a fiasco. The season opened with a three-fish-per-day limit, which almost instantly flooded the market. A knee-jerk reduction right afterward failed to heal the damage, and prices beneficial to fishermen never rebounded. Some captains would like to see opening week limits set at one fish per day and possibly adjusted sensibly afterwards.
Party and charter boat fishing may open May 18, if all goes best. Those first party boats with large capacities will be fishing mostly for scup and sea bass. They attract many outsiders from the bigger cities. As charter boat captain Bruce Peters shares, There really isnt an effective way to safe distance individuals on these boats. But small charter boats can be very different, and as such, may deserve differential treatment.
Most charter boat customers are families, workmates, and friends, already in close contact with each other," Peters claims. "Our charter boat takes six or fewer people, and are large enough to enable social distances. With masks, there is not a high-risk factor at all.
Peters is hoping that by June, restrictions will be more reasonable.
Good bass
On the striped bass front, cows up to 40 pounds have reached as far north as western Long Island Sound, and faster-moving schoolies already have invaded the New Hampshire coast. Although fluke season doesnt open here until May 23, its open now in New York, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Lobster pots now
Since the last right whale mothers have taken their babies north out of Cape Cod Bay, lobstermen can now set their pots, and boaters can increase their speeds.
Have some fish
Meanwhile, as pork, chicken and beef supplies from outside our region become less reliable, this is a great time to patronize fish markets and support our local fishermen who can bring us the best fresh haddock, squid, shellfish, scallops, lobster, sea bass, mackerel, striped bass and fluke.

Adeles significant slim down has been credited to a combination of exercise and eating sirtfoods. So what is the sirt diet and could it work for you?
COVID-19 may still be daily overwhelming the internet, but for a few hours last week all the talk on social mediturned to just how singer Adele could havelost so much weight.
And the answer? Apparently (allegedly) shes been following the sirtfood diet, detailed in a book of the same name written by Aidan Goggins and Glen Matten.
The sirt in sirtfood stands for sirtuins a group of genes and the proteins they encode that play a key role in cellular homeostasis. Sirtuins have been implicated in the stress response, DNA repair and energy metabolism, but the area where they've whipped up more scientific interest (and hype) than any other isin relation to extending lifespan.
The finding that sirtuins were linked to longevity in yeast led to an explosion of research that has yielded ambiguous results. There have been some signs of life extension and improved long-term health, including an anti-diabetic potential in laboratory animals, but nothing thats been reliably shown to extend life in mammals.
The central tenet of the sirtfood diet is that eating certain polyphenol-rich foods red wine and dark chocolate are frequently citedas examples to make the diet seem sexier can stimulate sirtuins (coined your skinny genes by the authors) and create weight loss.
Activating sirtuins through diet is an intriguing theory, but theres little evidence to support it, and even less evidence that doing so would lead to significant weight loss in practice.
The diet promises a weight loss of 7 pounds in 7 days and that longer-term you will improve your resistance to disease while gaining incredible energy and glowing health.
If you dont gnaw off your arm in hunger before you get slim that is.
Phase one of the diet is three miserable days of consuming just 1000 calories including three green juices, followed by four more days when youre permitted 1500 calories but still have to gag on drink green juice.
Phase two lasts for two weeks and isn't a whole lot more appealing, while longer-term you have to continue consuming the same list of foods repeatedly.
Polyphenol-rich food such as apples and citrus, green leafy vegetables, berries and olive oil are all perfectly healthy but having to focus on them at every meal is faddish and restrictive.
And thats the real reason the sirt diet works for those that do stick to it despite sounding seductively sciencey the restraints mean its just another not-particularly-well-disguised route to cutting calories.
If it works for you and it worked for Adele, then great. But lets not pretend sirt diet success stories are down to anything other than eating less.
