For Fitness Franchises, a Calculated Return to In-studio Sweat – Franchise Times News – May 2020 – Franchise Times

By Laura Michaels

Published: 2020.05.07 03:46 PM

As it reopens its locations, group fitness concept Burn Boot Camp, like other gyms, is evaluating class sizes and other changes necessary to comply with new health and safety guidelines.

Were not doing partner workouts. We are doing air high-fives, said Amanda Hall as she illustrated some the changes at Burn Boot Camp, where shes the VP of operations and is helping guide franchisees as they begin to reopen their fitness studios.

Sixteen Burn Boot Camp locations are back open in five statesGeorgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennesseewith more on the way as states lift COVID-19-related restrictions that in most cases have kept businesses, including Burns nearly 300 gyms, closed since mid-March. Group fitness concepts such as Burn face a variety of new guidelines dictated by states and counties, meaning, said Hall, the requirements to reopen are much more substantive than simply doing away with high-fives. Our field support team and our franchise advisory council put together a reopening plan, not just operationally but the cleaning, the PPE, now the common term for personal protective equipment, and analyzing capacity, she said. Really, the reopening construct is walking franchisees through all the steps and making sure they adhere to individual state guidelines.

In Arkansas, for example, gyms must ensure people maintain a 12-foot distance while working out and masks are to be worn except when actively exercising. In Tennessee, fitness centers in 89 counties (excluding major metros) can reopen at 50 percent capacity but must keep showers and locker rooms closed. There are plenty more guidelines to navigate, pointed out Hall, and an internal task force is working closely with franchisees in the 37 states where Burn operates. Still, even with enhanced health and safety measure in place, Hall said the brand recognizes members might not be ready to return even if their studio can reopen.

We understand that weve never lived through COVID-19 before and its impacted everyone differently, she said. So keeping that member-first mentality is key. Each Burn Boot Camp community has a members-only Facebook group, helping franchisees stay engaged with clients and allowing them to gauge interest in returning to in-person classes.

Were also still offering a virtual workout to meet members where they are, said Hall. We plan to continue that for the foreseeable future. For locations that have reopened, though, the response has been positive, she continued. We are definitely seeing that our members want to get back in the gym.

Dont open too soon

CityRows Atlanta studio could have reopened May 1, the date Georgias governor said gyms, along with spas, hair salons and bowling alleys could resume business, but the local operator chose to wait, a move CityRow CEO Helaine Knapp (pictured below) said proved to be the right one.

When Atlanta chose not to reopen right away, their clients were rejoicing online and saying thank you for thinking of our safety, said Knapp, who founded the row machine-based fitness concept in 2014 and partnered with consulting firm Franworth in 2018 to begin franchising.

We cant reopen too soon, she continued, we have to do it right.

The location in Atlanta plans to reopen May 16, with a franchisee in Texas also starting to prepare to resume studio classes. CityRow, which has 11 studios in eight states, is taking it slow and advising its franchisees to do the same, stressed Knapp. Start listening, its listening to their clients and listening to their staff, she said, with the feelings of instructors being especially important. If youve got instructors who say absolutely no way, Im not ready to come back, then you should probably rethink your plans.

As mandated closures hit CityRows locations, the brand launched CityRow Live and began filming 80 live classes a week incorporating body weight and strength exercises, modifying the usual workouts because most people dont have rowers at home. Our studios are actually bringing in revenue right now, said Knapp. And its helped our studios really stay top of mind so our clients are thinking of us first. Two locations whose early March openings were delayed were also able to use the live online classes to increase pre-sales of memberships, she noted.

CityRow locations, when they do reopen, are already well-positioned for social distancing, said Knapp, with only about 20 people per class. Capacity will of course be limited depending on the state, but we were never jamming people in, she said. And you have your own rower, your own mat, you dont change. Studios will operate with new double cleaning protocols, where clients wipe down their equipment and staff also do a full cleaning between each class. Clients and staff will also be asked to take a health pledge before each class.

The baseline is, this sucks. But the next thing is, well get through this together, said Knapp.

At-home is the anchor

Tough Mudder Bootcamp has been preparing for weeks for its studios to reopen, said CEO Britt Canady, but what that reopening looks like goes far beyond simply returning to in-studio classes. TMB At Home, which the brand launched as a $49 per month option with a mix of pre-recorded workouts, live-streamed classes and coaching tips, wont go away even after gyms open back up, a decision Canady, pictured below, said is meant to allow people to choose whats most comfortable for them.

That has to remain an option for our clients and, frankly, for our staff, he said. We dont want to make in-studio feel like its the only offering.

In fact, in-studio workouts are just one part of Tough Mudder Bootcamps three-pronged approach, with TMB at Home and TMB in the Park, outdoor social distancing workouts, making up the other prongs. When classes do resume staff will wear masks at all times, said Canady, there will be zero equipment sharing and TMB will ask members to self-screen, among other new safety measures.

The brand is working with franchisees to help prepare members for the changes and to get input from those members before planning to reopen. Do a pulse of your community and focus on the ones whove been the most active, because theyll be the most honest, said Canady. If that community isnt ready to come back, theres no point in forcing it.

I believe people are craving normalcy in an abnormal time, but you cant assume the comfort of any one client or staff.

Gyms, fitness centers, theatres and museums able to reopen next Friday – KULR-TV

BILLINGS, Mont. --Gyms, movie theatres and museums are allowed to re-open next Friday under the governor's order of phase one to re-open the state. But like restaurants, bars and casinos there are guidelines that must be followed.

For gyms, fitness studios, and pools in gyms, they can begin operating at 50 percent capacity and with strict guidelines. Staff must also sanitize frequently touched areas and equipment during hours of operation. Workers must also be trained on symptoms and hand washing technique and will be wearing masks. Last and most importantly, signage must be posted instructing those with COVID-19 symptoms to stay home.

For Yellowstone Fitness owner Don Christensen, he says he cannot wait to reopen their doors. "Just excited, we've been getting dates all over. It was supposed to be Monday, we're glad it's finally here. The 15th is perfect, we're ready and just super excited."

Like other businesses that are reopening, Christensen says he and his staff will be following these guidelines and taking extra precautions to ensure a clean space. "We have a daytime cleaning crew now where we never did before, they only came at night, now we have constant cleaning. Just work our cleaning stations put all over the gym, we have plexiglass around the desk, just a lot of rules."

Movie theatres and museums will be following similar guidelines. They must keep their capacity at 50 percent and maintain six feet between non family members or the immediate party. Signage must be posted instructing those who have covid-19 related symptoms to stay home. Interactive museums or museums that allow touch interactions and displays and live performance theaters are not allowed to operate at this time.

For Babock Theatre creative director Brian Oestreich the reopening comes as a unexpected surprise.

"I was pleasantly surprised. I know as a staff we expected to be more of a phase three reopening kind of deal which would put us mid June, early July. We love our community and we love being able to serve the community, we are optimistic to reopen and serve those people but we want to make sure we are doing it safely."

Planet Fitness Reports Decreased Q1 2020 Revenue Due to Effects of COVID-19 – Club Industry

Planet Fitness Inc., Hampton, New Hampshire, reported first quarter 2020 revenue of $127.2 million, a decrease of $21.6 million (14.5 percent) compared to first quarter 2019, the public company reported this week. This included a system-wide same-store sales increase of 9.8 percent.

We entered 2020 with very good momentum and the new fiscal year got off to a strong start, Chris Rondeau, Planet Fitness CEO, said in a media release. The outbreak of COVID-19 in the U.S. has significantly disrupted our business as well as everyday life.

The company temporarily closed all Planet Fitness locations in mid-March and took several actions to strengthen its financial liquidity and flexibility, he said. Planet Fitness is working with its franchisees and assessing recommendations from state and local governments and health authorities on plans for safely reopening its clubs.

While there is still uncertainty about the ultimate impact COVID-19 will have on our industry and the overall economy, I am confident that Planet Fitness will emerge from this period well-positioned to further expand its leadership role in the fitness industry, Rondeau said in the release.

The biggest impact on the companys top and bottom line was the deferral of revenue related to monthly membership dues collected in March, before stores closed due to COVID-19, Planet Fitness Chief Financial Officer Tom Fitzgerald said in a call with analysts on May 5. Members will be credited for any membership dues paid for periods when Planet Fitness locations were closed. Because of this, the company deferred $20 million in revenue related to monthly membership dues collected in March before clubs closed--$14.1 million of which was from franchise royalty and $5.9 million of which was from monthly dues at corporate-owned stores. That revenue will be recognized once clubs reopen.

The outbreak of COVID-19 prevented the company from doing planned new and replacement equipment sales during the last few weeks of March. Revenue from the companys equipment segment decreased $16.8 million (37.4 percent) to $28.2 million from $45 million in the prior year period due to lower equipment sales to new and existing franchisee-owned stores in the first quarter compared to the same period in 2019. The decrease includes $10 million in lower revenue due to COVID-19.

Planet Fitness opened 39 new clubs in the first quarter, which increased the number of Planet Fitness clubs to 2,039 at the end of the quarter.

The revenue by segment included a $7.2 million (11 percent) decrease of franchise segment revenue to $58.5 million compared to $65.8 million in first quarter 2019. This amount does not include $18.7 million of deferred royalty and national advertising fund revenue collected but not recognized as a result of the temporary club closures caused by COVID-19. Franchise segment same-store sales increased by 10 percent.

Corporate-owned club segment revenue increased $2.5 million (6.5 percent) to $40.5 million compared to the same period last year. Same store sales for corporate-owned clubs increased 7.3 percent, driven by higher revenue of $5.5 million from corporate-owned clubs that were opened or acquired since Jan. 1, 2019 but partially offset by lower revenue of $3 million from corporate-owned stores included in the same-store sales. The $40.5 million corporate-owned stores revenue for the first quarter 2020 does not reflect $5.9 million of deferred revenue that was collected but not recognized as a result of temporary club closures from COVID-19.

Net income attributable to Planet Fitness Inc. was $8.6 million compared to net income attributable to the company in first quarter 2019 of $27.4 million.

Net income decreased 67.2 percent to $10.4 million compared to net income of $31.6 million in the prior year period.

Adjusted net income decreased 56 percent to $14.4 million compared to $32.7 million in the prior year period.

Cash and cash equivalents as of March 31, 2020, was $547.5 million.

Adjusted EBITDA decreased 26.6 percent to $46.5 million from $63.4 million in first quarter 2019.

Franchise segment EBITDA decreased $10.6 million (22.4 percent) to $36.7 million.

Corporate-owned stores segment EBITDA decreased $3.6 million (22.9 percent) to $12 million.

Equipment segment EBITDA decreased by $4 million (38.8 percent) to $6.4 million driven by lower equipment sales to new and existing franchisee-owned clubs.

The company declined to offer guidance on 2020 outlook due to the uncertainty from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fitness studios itching to reopen – CityNews Calgary

CALGARY (CityNews) The phased reopening of the economy has some business wanting to pump the brakes but others, like fitness boutiques, say they should be opening earlier.

A petition in Alberta is calling for the government to let them reopen in the second stage of its relaunch plan along with movie theatres, personal services and massage therapists.

Everybody has just kind of been pushed into this box and were just trying to bring awareness that I dont think its the same box for everybody, said Nathan Amor, owner of F45 Inglewood.

Our maximum capacity at F45 is 30 people per class, we could reduce that 50 per cent. That would easily allow for that six feet of distance per person per workout station.

RELATED: Is it too early to reopen? An infectious disease expert weighs in

Amor also believes it will be easier to keep stations clean with the help of instructors and do contact tracing in studios that have no more than 200 total members, compared to other gyms or rec centres which can have thousands.

One size is not going to fit all when it comes to industry or services, said infectious disease expert Dr. Craig Jenne. Although we can have enhanced measures in one company or a service, none of the enhanced measures are airtight.

While the U.S. has gyms and fitness centres as part of the initial reopening plans, provinces seem to be taking a more cautious approach.

F45 HQ has actually given us an 18-page document on the process to do everything, how often we should be doing things, where we should posting signs, how we should be coaching our members to open and close doors and wiping things down, said Amor.

Although they want to reopen sooner, Amor admits they wont do it if its not safe.

What wed like to see is get Phase One open to see how that goes, see how bars and restaurants do their social distancing. We kind of want to wait and see what that is and make sure there isnt a massive uptick.

Phase one of Albertas relaunch plan is set to start on May 14 with a date yet to be determined for phase two.

Getting physical: Many gyms, fitness centers open and trying to stay safe – Oak Ridger

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. From small yoga studios to massive gym complexes, Oak Ridge's various fitness locations have been open for nearly a week since being shuttered because of the coronavirus pandemic.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. From small yoga studios to massive gym complexes, Oak Ridges various fitness locations have been open for nearly a week since being shuttered because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee opened the fitness locations last Friday, May 1. He and the state Department of Health issued guidelines on how the fitness location operators and customers must proceeds so as to keep patrons healthy and prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Exercise is incredibly important for the physical and mental health of our population, and we want Tennesseans to have access to safe environments where they can exercise as appropriate, the governor stated in a news release.

Oak Ridges gyms have been weighing in on whether to open and if they open, how to operate.

Koa Strength and Fitness, 697 Emory Valley Road, has some challenges, but also some advantages because of its size.

We really dont ever have more than 10 people in here at once anyway, manager Pete Rubish who owns Koa along with Kelley Christopher, said in a phone interview, regarding precautions with customers. The two owners also dont have to worry about laying off or furloughing employees as they are also the only employees. Koa offers classes, but also a power lifting area, and both are open now. Unlike some other gyms, Koa is accepting new memberships.

We opened on the (May) 1st. Its definitely been a process Obviously things arent back to normal yet, Rubish said. I think its good to be up and running again. It just hurt small businesses everywhere when they shut things down. I understand the reasoning for it, but its been good to ease back into a normal way of living, he said.

Kinetics Wellness Studio, 649 Briarcliff Ave., offers barre, Pilates and yoga classes. The owner, Kendrey Nolds, said some classes are online now, while others are meeting in person again. The instructors will always wear masks, she said, and participants may wear masks if they like.

Its honestly so far been slow, Nolds said regarding business since reopening.

Secret City Crossfit, 238 Brisbane Road, is now limiting itself to organized classes with already-enrolled members.

Most of the people who are showing up for the classes are thrilled that weve reopened, owner Mark Berger said, adding later that he is also extremely happy.

However, he said some people have to stay home due to job requirements. Other customers would have to bring children with them. He said Secret City Crossfit has loaned out equipment to its long-term members. They can keep the equipment until theyre ready to come back to the gym.

Class sizes are limited. Berger used painters tape to create 7-by-7-foot workout areas for each athlete in a class. These areas are six feet apart from each other for safety. He said class size now nine athletes and one coach maximum is based on how many little areas the gym could be set up.

Berger said he had suspended payments for the month of April, but some members continued to pay.

'Go ahead and charge me anyway, I want to be sure you survive this,' Berger said, summing up those members views.

I thought that was really nice, he said.

Hes not taking new members now.

Im going to delay that at least two weeks to wait and see what happens, he said.

Maxed Out on South Illinois Avenue, another locally owned gym, has opened with several changes due to the new guidelines and safety measures.

We are so excited to be opening back up and doing what we do best! We understand that some of this may be inconvenient and frustrating, but as they say it is what it is. Regardless of your views/opinions on the COVID-19 pandemic, these guidelines must be followed, and we'll do our best to make it as normal as possible. This is the only way we are allowed to legally open, so help us out! the gym posted to its Facebook page on April 29, before its May 1 opening.

Members must have their temperatures checked upon entry and be below 100.4 Fahrenheit to enter.

Workouts must be limited to one hour due to the states 50% capacity requirements. Members must always keep six feet apart.

Six feet apart or six feet under. Its your choice pal, the gym stated on a sign posted to its Facebook page. The gym is now for members only with no guests or guest passes.

Several franchise gyms in Oak Ridge have also opened and have posted their plans to Facebook. Golds Gym, 302 S. Illinois Ave., has opened with reduced hours and amenities, including no use of lockers, while also providing online classes for people who dont feel comfortable coming back. National Fitness Center, 750 Briarcliff Ave., has also opened as has Workout Anytime, 1135 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Planet Fitness, 370 S. Illinois Ave., hasnt opened its doors yet. A phone message said the target date to reopen is May 15, but a May 17 date is given online. The recorded phone message at Planet Fitness said for customers to keep calling back.

Ben Pounds is staff reporter for The Oak Ridger. Call him at (865) 441-2317 and follow him on Twitter @Bpoundsjournal. News editor Donna Smith contributed to this story.
