Fitness Trail: Coronavirus forces industry to pivot to fitness from home – Sky Hi News

In these unprecedented times, the fitness industry, to continue providing fitness services to our clients and members, has had to pivot, reassess and address those needs innovatively.

Consequently, the second we, like many other fitness businesses, knew that our brick and mortar operations may be temporarily suspended, we immediately began to tap into our creative resources on how we would take care of our clients and members during this hiatus. Keeping them healthy, safe and happy has always been our primary goal, and while the picture looked a bit different, the priority was still the same.

Therefore, during this challenging time, we have produced in-house over 55 exercise videos which are available on YouTube and to our clients and members via newsletters where the videos are embedded along with all of the written descriptive content and daily inspirational thoughts.

Additionally, we began offering Zoom Group Exercise classes, as well as Zoom Personal Training Sessions, and we have also produced videos for our personal training clientele who do not have access to Zoom so that they may stay on track until we are together again. In this regard, our clients who train on the Pilates Reformer have access to Pilates Reformer video exercise programs specifically produced for them as an individual.

Support Local JournalismDonate

We have produced a huge variety of exercise videos which include formats such as Cardio Circuit, 3 x 3 Circuit, 7-Station Total Body Circuit, Short Circuit, Functional Strength, Mat Pilates, Pilates on the Ball, Simply Strength, Total Body Glutes + Core Pilates Fusion, Total Upper Body + Core Pilates Fusion, Short Cycle, Cycle/Abs, Pure Stretch, Cardio Step, and several Yoga formats.

All of our program formats may be performed without equipment. However, equipment is utilized in some of our formats and we encourage use of safe household items such as backpacks which may be loaded or unloaded and are very practical for external load bearing exercises. Some formats, such as Simply Strength specifically utilize body weight only, and all formats may be modified to suit just about any fitness level.

We provide those modifications both during the video pre-class instruction as well as throughout the format to reinforce the concept of modifying rather than compensation. Many of our clients and members perform one to three of the videos per day since the formats are designed to be performed in a stacked fashion. For example, you may perform the 3 x 3 circuit on Monday mornings, followed by the Pilates on the Ball or the Total Glutes + Core Pilates Fusion and avoid redundancy, enjoy the variety and challenges of all three formats.

All of our formats change weekly, which we have always done weekly, to keep all workouts fresh, exciting and on the cutting edge of fitness producing excellent results. Our videos have been produced specifically for our clients and members. However, currently the general public, may access our videos on YouTube by entering Mountain Life Fitness into the search bar and then clicking on our logo for access.

There are many other fitness facilities that are following suit, so check out your favorite gym, instructor or trainer and see what they may be offering. We are all here for you, today and beyond!

As always, prior to beginning any exercise program, please consult your physician.

Working out during the pandemic – The Miami Hurricane

Jacob StotzkyCoral Gables, Florida6:23 p.m., Wednesday May 6

Ive been a sports nut since I can remember. I love to watch NFL and college football, NBA and college basketball and professional tennis matches, particularly Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Im a big Heat, Dolphins and University of Miami fan.

My brother and dad are also big fans. My mom does not enjoy watching football or basketball games, however, she is a big tennis fan.

But even more than watching sports, my family and I enjoy playing them.

I was on my high school varsity basketball and tennis teams. After sustaining a really bad ACL, MCL and cartilage tear during a high school basketball practice and having surgery, I turned to a serious weightlifting and swimming regimen. For many years, I worked out obsessively and never missed a day.

My brother played tennis and lifted weights. After running for years, my mom went back to walking fast and taking Pilate classes. My dad was a fanatical workout guy, swimming miles every day, lifting weights and riding an exercise bike several times a week.

Then the corona epidemic struck, and a stay-at-home order was issued. How could I and my family stay in shape?

My parents tried walking around the Granada Golf Course but that proved difficult because so many people were doing the same thing. My brother and I tried exercise programs

posted on the internet, but that was not good enough. So, we all came up with new and different ways to exercise.

My brother became lazy and stopped exercising but then returned to exercising by watching the internet videos.

My mom started running again. Shes now up to four miles four times a week. She does online Pilate classes three times a week.

My dad became creative. He bought an Aqua Flotation Belt, which you attach around your waist to keep you afloat. He then runs in the pool in 8-foot-deep water, his feet not touching the bottom of the pool, for about an hour to an hour and a half every day. He says its like running without the shock of hitting the ground.

I now ride a bike at full speed for almost 45 minutes a day and then swim laps in our small pool for another 45 minutes.

We have all learned to cope with unexpected change and to keep ourselves in good shape.

Exercise helps us both physically and emotionally. You ought to try it.

Lineage Cell Therapeutics Announces Early Exercise of Option with Cancer Research UK for Immuno-Oncology Cell Therapy Program – BioSpace

CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Lineage Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (NYSE American and TASE: LCTX), a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing novel cell therapies for unmet medical needs, announced today that Cancer Research UKs Commercial Partnerships has permitted Lineage to conduct an early exercise of its option to acquire data from Cancer Research UKs ongoing Phase 1 clinical trial of VAC2 in non-small cell lung cancer (NCT03371485), and develop an allogeneic dendritic cell therapy platform (VAC). Lineage will assume responsibility for further development of the VAC2 product candidate as well as future development opportunities derived from the VAC platform, while Cancer Research UK concludes the ongoing trial. This decision was based on an early review of the data collected by Cancer Research UK in the VAC2 trial under a clinical trial and option agreement. In addition, Cancer Research UK will provide input on the potential use of VAC in the infectious disease space to develop a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19. Cancer Research UK is the worlds largest cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research.

Clinical data recently collected by Cancer Research UK in the ongoing trial of VAC2 has shown peripheral immunogenicity in patients with non-small cell lung cancer, providing validation of the underlying mechanism of using allogeneic dendritic cells to present antigens to the bodys immune system. Evidence of immunogenicity was a key clinical signal which was necessary before we would consider taking over the program, stated Brian M. Culley, Lineage CEO. This encouraging evidence builds upon earlier clinical studies of VAC which supported not only the safety of the VAC platform, but also evidence that patients developed antigen-specific T cell immune responses. We are excited to assume responsibility for advancing this promising program and move Lineage more aggressively into the field of cancer immunotherapy. Given the scientific evidence supporting our approach, the opportunity to also apply our VAC program to SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development was another positive consideration and we are pleased that Cancer Research UK facilitated this decision. Presenting a viral antigen will require transferring the program from Cancer Research UKs Centre for Drug Development to our cGMP facility, scaling the manufacturing process, and eventually submitting an IND for clinical testing. We also will be evaluating opportunities for non-dilutive funding for this new initiative.

Dr. Nigel Blackburn, Cancer Research UKs Director of the Centre for Drug Development, said: We are pleased that our development efforts on the VAC2 program over the past several years have generated initial evidence of an immune response in cancer patients and have resulted in an early exercise of the option by Lineage. We are excited to transfer the next phase of development to our partners and to assist the expansion of those efforts into SARS-CoV-2 vaccine development and other areas with significant unmet need.

About VAC2

VAC2 is an allogeneic, or non-patient specific, cancer vaccine product candidate designed to stimulate patient immune responses to an antigen commonly expressed in cancerous cells but not in normal adult cells. VAC2, which is produced from a pluripotent cell technology using a directed differentiation method, is comprised of a population of nonproliferating mature dendritic cells. As the most potent type of antigen presenting cell in the body, dendritic cells instruct the bodys immune system to attack and eliminate harmful pathogens and unwanted cells. Because the tumor antigen is loaded exogenously into the dendritic cells prior to administration, VAC2 is a platform technology that can be modified to carry any antigen, including patient-specific tumor neo-antigens or viral antigens. VAC2 is currently being tested in a Phase 1 study in adult patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the advanced and adjuvant settings (NCT03371485), conducted by Cancer Research UK.

Fitness Program Features Workouts Filmed on The Navajo Nation – Flagstaff Business & Online News | Northern Arizona Local Newspaper – Flagstaff…

Holt Hamilton Films, which created award-winning movies More Than Frybread, Turquoise Rose, Legends from the Sky, and other indigenous family classics, has jumped in the fight against Coronaviris Covid-19 by offering an episode of its first fitness series Fit with Freida with Freida episode #02, Fat Burn Sack Attack, for free on Holt Hamilton Films YouTube channel.

The series, which contains 16 half-hour episodes of heart-pumping exercise filmed entirely on The Navajo Nation sometimes in traditional hogans as well as in the scenic outdoors was available only on DVD until recently when Filmmaker Holt Hamilton decided to release an episode online.

Ive wanted to do something to help fight against Covid-19 and just havent found the way to help until now. The thought came quietly to my mind that I should simply put an episode on YouTube. I am learning the power of running and exercise and how that can calm and strengthen the mind while encouraging insights and positive thoughts into what I can and cannot change.

Elfreida Barton, an enrolled member of the Navajo Tribe, hosts the series. I couldnt have found a better person, both from a fitness perspective, a culturally sensitive perspective and one who cares deeply about her Native peoples health and well-being, to host this first season, said Hamilton. She lives, breathes and, Im confident, dreams this stuff! Early in the process, I shared my vision of the series with her and then quickly got out of her way.

The series has been available on DVD for more than six months, but according to Hamilton, hasnt really gotten much traction in Native country. He did mention one community, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, which really grasped the vision of what we were trying to do and has incorporated it positively into their vibrant health and wellness programs as a supplementary tool to support their established programs.

Hamilton also has spoken to a number of other tribal communities. We still have strong hope to get this series into homes where it has great potential for positive change.

Hamilton says if theres a positive response to streaming this first episode, he may continue to roll another episode out after that. I made this series with the intent that lives would be blessed for the better. Now may be the time for us as humans to really buckle down and take a serious look at our health and what we are doing for ourselves, especially in our current situation.

New York : Every Mother Raises $1.5 Million Seed Round – Citybizlist Real Estate

Every Mother, a clinically proven fitness program for pre and post-natal women, today announced the closing of a $1.5M seed round led by Courtside Ventures with participation from Serena Williams' Serena Ventures, Techstars Ventures, The Fund, and prominent angels Robin Berzin (Parsley Health), Ilia Papas (Blue Apron), and Jenny Fielding (Techstars and The Fund). These funds will be used to help Every Mother accelerate growth and scale its operations to meet an ever growing demand from mothers around the globe for an easily accessible, clinically proven streaming fitness method that will help them repair and recover from issues that are often viewed as collateral damage of motherhood and made worse by traditional exercise.

"When Leah and I started Every Mother, we were both disheartened and motivated by the lack of education and dearth of fitness options available that properly address and responsibly protect against the physical changes that accompany childbirth," said Allison Rapaport, CEO of Every Mother. "From our launch until now, our clinically proven approach has struck a chord with moms at all points in their lives who were relieved to know they didn't just have to accept perpetual discomfort around their core. These women learned the way they moved and exercised could change what they felt forced to accept, and that they could reap tremendous benefits from carrying these lessons through their ongoing fitness lifestyle. Through this new round of funding, we will now not only be able ensure that we have the best talent to help us expand and scale, but we will have immediate access to partners that we can grow with and gain strategic guidance from to further our mission of providing safe, convenient, effective fitness solutions to every mother."

Unlike other, more expensive pre and post-natal fitness programs that focus solely on helping mothers lose their baby weight or bounce back post pregnancy, Every Mother's method is designed to address a number of physical issues that mothers face, including resolving and repairing diastasis recti or ab separation, while helping alleviate back pain and urinary incontinence, so women who are suffering can feel whole again. In fact, the company has conducted studies with leading research hospitals including Weill Cornell that show Every Mother's method not only does no harm for diastasis recti, but that it actually resolves it, and helps alleviate the accompanying symptoms of a protruding waistline, urinary incontinence and back pain. This Summer, Every Mother will release the results of a prospective non-randomized trial with Hospital for Special Surgery, with support from Harvard Medical School, designed to demonstrate the statistical significance of diastasis recti improvement and build awareness and acceptance in the medical community, to help more mothers avoid surgery and lifelong discomfort from a condition that is resolvable with exercise.

"As investors in the fitness and wellness space, we meet a lot of companies that have theoretical ideas of how to solve for physical ailments, but rarely do we have the opportunity to partner with a company whose clinically proven approach is the foundation of the methodology," said Kai Bond at Courtside Ventures. "Allison and Leah at Every Mother have been able to create more than a wellness platform, but also a community that has transformed the lives of all mothers."

Every Mother's program is designed to be incredibly easy to use. Mothers simply sign-up for a quarterly or annual membership, answer three questions to get to the correct stage, and for as little as just $10 a month, they gain access to a curated track of the best information and programming possible to meet them wherever they are on their pre and postnatal fitness journey.

Once onboarded, mothers are empowered to begin learning the foundations of safe and effective movement that can be progressively woven through their day. Featuring highly curated video content that leverages Leah Keller's lauded EMbody method, as well as tips from experts including well known nutritionists, OBGYN's and more, Every Mother provides multiple exercise paths with a daily dose of core movement, full body fitness, optimal reminders, progress tracking and integrated community links to foster a lifetime of superior core strength, function and fitness, all within a supportive and motivating environment.

"Every Mother immediately caught our attention for its ability to successfully address this incredibly important and much needed area of female fitness that had, up until this point, been readily misunderstood or even ignored," said Jenny Fielding, MD Techstars. "We knew the team at Every Mother was onto something big. We are proud to have invested in Every Mother at Techstars NY and to be upping our investment again in this groundbreaking company again today."

As a company led by busy working moms, Every Mother is constructed to create extraordinary results in only 10 to 30 minutes a day. Its guided streaming video experience is designed to ensure this important group doesn't have to think about how to exercise but instead knows exactly what to do and how long it will take them each day, so that it fits directly into their lives. The program is also equipped with scheduled reminders, a diastasis recti tracker and other built-in tools for accountability, to ensure mothers can achieve the ultimate long term benefits of its approach.

At the core of the program is Every Mother's supportive community that creates a bond between members and a sense that everyone is in it together to help mothers achieve their goals. In connection with rethinking the way they move, mothers find the community aspect so helpful, they usually come in for one pain point but end up staying and progressing throughout Every Mother's entire program, addressing different and important stages of fitness throughout their journey.

"At Serena Ventures, we often look for companies that make everyday life easier. As a mother, I have experienced first-hand how hard recovery from childbirth can be, and the moment we were introduced to Every Mother, we knew we had to get involved," said Serena Williams, founder of Serena Ventures.

Researchers team up to support people with disabilities – UBC Faculty of Medicine

With gyms, recreation centres and sports programs closed due to COVID-19, people living with disabilities are looking for creative ways to stay active at home.

For many people, staying active during COVID-19 isolation can be a struggle. More so for people living with disabilities, says UBC Okanagans Kathleen Martin Ginis.

Martin Ginis is a professor in UBCOs School of Health and Exercise Sciences and director of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management. Shes also the director of the Canadian Disability Participation Project (CDPP)a group that has revived a service called Get in Motion to support people with disabilities get regular physical activity.

Get in Motion was a phone-in coaching service led by Martin Giniss lab, but put on hold a few years ago. Now, with people self-isolating, there is a push from public health authorities for people to get a daily dose of physical activity. However, Martin Ginis and her colleagues from Queens University, Amy Latimer-Cheung and Jennifer Tomasone, say Canadians with disabilities have fewer options than others to get exercise.

People with a disability are at increased risk for social isolation under usual circumstances, but especially so during the COVID outbreak, says Martin Ginis. They also face unique barriers and challenges to physical activity. With the closure of adapted physical activity and recreation programs, we are very concerned about the health and well-being of Canadians with disabilities. We are offering the Get in Motion service as a way to manage some of the psychosocial and physical health risks of being inactive at home.

Martin Ginis explains that adapted sport and exercise programs were closed across the country because of COVID-19.

We had been talking to our community partners who were closing their programs and we were all feeling upset about the impact these closures will have on community members with disabilities, she says. We were all thinking I wish we still had Get in Motion and then Amy Latimer-Cheung started the ball rollingand got the service back up and running.

Based virtually out of Latimer-Cheung and Tomasones lab at Queens, Get in Motion is available for all Canadians with physical disabilities, as well as for Special Olympics athletes. Participants can connect with a volunteer physical activity coach via phone or online conferencing. The volunteer then guides that person through an at-home physical activity program.

The CDPP is based out of UBC Okanagan and Martin Ginis has several students actively counselling Get in Motion participants while others are being trained.

Get in Motion volunteer Sarah Lawrason is a second-year doctoral student who studies physical activity participation among people with spinal cord injuries who walk. She was matched with someone who fits into her research population.

My client lost access to her regular physiotherapy when COVID-19 happened. We talk once a week about her exercise goals, says Lawrason. She appreciates the accountability of checking in and setting a goal each week and she's enjoyed the resources I've sent her that have similar exercises to her normal routine.

Lawrason notes, however, this is definitely a two-way relationship where both the coach and the client are benefitting.

Initially, I was really excited to start coaching as it aligns with my own research, she says. But I also really look forward to my calls each week because it's a new friendly person to talk to when I'm feeling isolated.

The CDPP has documented data about the benefits of sport and exercise participation for Canadians with disabilities including improved health, well-being and overall life satisfaction.

Our research has shown that a sense of belonging is key to people with disabilities experiencing full and effective participation in sport and exercise, says Martin Ginis. With Get in Motion, we are striving to provide that sense of belonging through phone calls with trained volunteers who have experience with adapted sport and exercise. Because the belongingness piece is removed if you are doing this all alone.

Portland Tennis and Education program stalled, but other service to families fills in – KGW.com

With no onsite tennis instruction or education mentoring, the nonprofit serving low income students in North Portland is serving up more food than tennis.

PORTLAND, Ore. Things are not the same at St. John's Racquet Center. Instead of kids coming here for Portland Tennis and Education programs, donated food is stockpiled in the lobby.

"We had a big food drive on Tuesday and we're trying to organize as many groceries for the families as possible," said Executive Director Jorge Fuenmayor.

Portland Tennis and Educationhas long history of bringing a sport often associated with country clubs to the city's poor and under-served. Along with tennis, the nonprofit provides after school and summer educational programs, mentoring kids. The classrooms we featured on news stories in the past are empty right now. But the work continues in a different way.

"Were really trying to address the basic needs of the families by helping them with food, school supplies, electronic equipment so that the kids can do digital learning, and then adding in a bill assistance program that were just starting right now," said Associate Director Stephanie Haas.

And they are providing a chance for the 70 kids in the program to get with their groups, remotely, and check in with mentors, too. The scholar athletes can still get some exercise, finding workouts and other information on a website made just for them.

The food deliveries are happening two or three times a week; another chance to connect, at least for a brief time. Fuenmayor says these families work hard for little pay. And now, 26 of 37 of them have lost their jobs.

"So a lot of concern about how to put food on the table how to pay the bills- some of the other families are doing OK but at the same time starting to worry about what's next," said Fuenmayor.

It's a tough time for the nonprofit as well. For now, PT&E has laid off over 80 percent of its staff and volunteers. But the hope is that tennis and education will come alive again in the future, at St. John's Center. In the meantime, donations of food, school supplies and financial assistance are appreciated. Learn more here, about how to help.

Adele’s former trainer speaks out over ‘fat-phobic accusations’ over her weight loss – Today.com

Adele's former trainer is speaking out about "fat-phobic accusations" after the singer showed off her weight loss in a photo celebrating her 32nd birthday on Wednesday.

Pete Geracimo, who said he used to train the "Hello" singer in London, called the "negative commentary" questioning why Adele decided to lose weight "disheartening."

"She let her incredible voice do the talking, or should I say singing! She never once pretended to be something that she wasnt. What you saw was what you got. And we all LOVED it!" Geracimo wrote on Instagram.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

The singer hasn't commented on her weight loss and the stir it has created. Many fans left comments telling her she looked fantastic, while others questioned why the singer felt she needed to lose weight.

"When Adele and I started our journey together, it was never about getting super skinny," Geracimo said. "It was about getting her healthy. Especially post pregnancy and post surgery."

Adele has a son, Angelo, with her ex-husband Simon Konecki.

Geracimo said helped Adele get ready for a 13-month tour to support her album "25," which was released in November 2015. That's when he said Adele started to make some changes.

"In that time, she warmed to training and made better food choices. As a result, she lost considerable weight and people took notice. Her body transformation was splashed across every media outlet," he said. "The attention it generated was mind-blowing."

He said he "could not be prouder or happier" to see Adele smiling and achieving her goals.

"She did not lose the weight to make others feel bad about themselves. This personal transformation has nothing to do with me or you. Its about Adele and how she wants to live her life," he said. "She has not changed from the Adele we grew up with and have loved."

Long Island town told to go on a diet but residents say ‘fat chance’ – New York Post

Uncle Sam wants you to lose weight.

Lawmakers in the Long Island town of Huntington rolled out a shocking new initiative on Wednesday to combat citizens weight gain during the coronavirus lockdown. Officials insist the voluntary program will help Huntington residents stay fit and sane throughout quarantine.

But the very suggestion that they should start working on their post-lockdown beach body went over about as well as youd expect with residents like Joanne Meyers.

The Huntington native calls the town-wide diet ridiculous. The 52-year-old paralegal adds that she didnt quite believe that the government would try to institute a fat camp.

I thought, Its not a gimmick? Its real?

Town officials say yes, the recommendations are real but they deny the new program is anything like a fat camp.

Were not limiting anyones soft-drink size, Legislator William Spencer tells The Post, calling to mind the triggering New York City soda ban.

Spencer says he gained about 10 pounds himself since entering quarantine, and as a physician, he worries about the connection between COVID-19 and weight.

One of the trends that we saw among the people who were being intubated and having trouble recovering were comorbidities like diabetes, asthma and obesity, says Spencer, the chair of the local Legislatures Health Committee and the chief of otolaryngology at Huntington Hospital.

He adds that Suffolk County has been a hotspot for COVID-19, and the area has 35,275 confirmed cases.

Spencer tapped his colleague Dr. David Buchin, who heads up bariatric surgery at the hospital, to put together a diet plan to rein in snacking in Huntington.

But Meyers isnt biting. My weight loss is my own business, she says, although she cops to gaining the so-called Quarantine 15.

Im working from home, and its getting ridiculous, says Meyers, who set up an office in her kitchen and says its led to unwanted mini-meals. My clothes dont fit anymore. Ive been wearing sweatpants and yoga pants, and its not cute.

Meyers decided about a week ago to take up the low carb, high-fat keto diet Its worked for me in the past, she says but adds that part of her weight gain is due to the stressed and depressed times, brought about by the pandemic. Food can be very comforting, she says.

Buchin hopes to cover stress-eating in his Facebook Live events, which start on May 11. There, people like Meyers will be able ask questions about shedding pounds in real time.

Ill be giving advice on how to control emotional eating and how to avoid comfort foods and high carbohydrate-rich foods, says Buchin in a press conference on Wednesday enlisting locals for the fight against the battle of the bulge.

Bunchin will also be offering virtual counseling and nutritional advice including healthy grocery lists through his website where clients can sign up to track their diet progress, too. Free exercise classes on Zoom through Intelligent Fitness, of East Northport, and Blue Lotus Center for Yoga and the Arts, of Huntington, will also be available to Huntington residents.

Spencer says hes even working to get gym equipment delivered to constituents.

There are some gym owners who are saying, If you want to maintain your membership, Ill deliver an elliptical to your house and I can coach you via Zoom, says Spencer, whos quick to deny that the healthy lifestyle guide is a mandate. Ive had a few people who have called up asking if the town is putting us on a diet, but I explain to them its just resources.

He wont be intercepting any pizza deliveries, either. Food provides comfort, and I dont want to take that away from people.

Meyers plans to stick to grilled chicken, salmon, and spinach omelettes to get her body back in fighting shape, and thinks politicians should stick to bigger issues than ballooning waistlines.

I would think there are better or more important things they should be doing, she says.
