Weight loss can be an uphill struggle for many people. With many diets to choose from, people often dont know which would suit them. Snacking is one of the huge problems people face when trying to lose weight and an expert has revealed how eating this one snack regularly can help with the weight loss journey.
Almonds contain lots of healthy fats, fibre, protein, magnesium and vitamin E.
The health benefits of almonds include lower blood sugar levels, reduced blood sugar and lower cholesterol levels.
They can also reduce hunger and promote weight loss.
Speaking to theExpress.co.ukDr Deborah Lee, Dr Fox Online said: Many people remain unaware that eating nuts regularly has health benefits and can help them lose weight.

She explains that during a 2014 study, a group of 108 women who were overweight or obese were studied closely.
They were divided into two groups and both groups were asked to follow a calorie controlled diet for three months.
One group was also asked to eat 50g almonds per day, Dr Deborah Lee explained.
After the study, both groups had lost weight. However, weight loss was significantly greater in the almond-eating group compared to the non-nut eaters.

The average weight loss in the almond group was 3.68 Kg compared 1.27 Kg in the non-nut group.
The group who ate almonds also showed significantly lower cholesterol, just one health benefit of eating almonds.
Dr Deborah Lee explains how nuts are high in protein and fibre.
She said: They help you feel fuller for longer. It has been suggested they may lead to an increase in your resting expenditure (thermogenesis) although this has not been proven.
A lot of people tend to avoid snacking on nuts as they are high in calories.
However Dr Deborah Lee states that eating a handful of nuts every day is a healthy snack which can aid weight loss.
Healthline suggests that because of the high amount of fibre found in almonds and all nuts in general, they keep you fuller for longer.
Both protein and fibre are known to increase feelings of fullness. This can help you eat fewer calories which in turn, will help aid weight loss.
In order to lose weight your diet needs to be in a calorie deficit. This means your body is burning more calories than you are consuming.
The NHS recommends losing around one to two pounds a week but everyones body is different and everyone has a different metabolism and weight loss can differ from person to person.
Nuts, including almonds contain several nutrients that your body struggles to break down and digest.
A portion of almonds does not count towards your five a day due to their high fat content.
However, according to BBC Good Food, a healthy portion would appear to be around 20g-50g a day for adults incorporated into a balanced diet.
Your body does not absorb ten to 15 percent of the calories in nuts. Due to their satiating properties, nuts are a great addition to an effective weight loss diet.
The benefits of eating almonds help stretch much further than weight loss but incorporated into a healthy diet plan can help achieve results.

Adele first appeared to be losing weight back in October 2019 when she was photographed at Drakes birthday party. After, the paparazzi captured the Send My Love singer showing off her new figure while hanging out on the beach and taking a walk. The 32-year-old star seemed to be keeping a low profile, but then took to Instagram to show off her new figure in a Christmas Instagram post and flaunted even more progress with a pic on her birthday in May 2020. Adeles celebrity friends went crazy for her new look, which she reportedly maintains with the Sirtfood diet and help from a personal trainer. Her weight loss came on the heels of her divorce from Simon Konecki in September 2019.
Jessica Simpson had a massive mommy makeover after giving birth to daughter Birdie May. The 39-year-old singer revealed on Instagram she had lost 100 pounds in just six months after she and husband Eric Johnson welcomed their third child together. She shared that she was so proud to feel like herself again. Simpson credits her long-time trainer for helping her shed the pounds in such a short amount of time.
Ricky Gervais had a total body transformation back in 2011 and hes been keeping it tight ever since. Shonda Rhimes looked like a new woman after losing 117 pounds in 2015. The Scandal creator managed to slim down by adding exercise into her daily routine as well as eating with portion control. Rhimes, 50, has been open about the fact that she decided to lose weight for health reasons and not for vanity. I did not do it because I thought I would become beautiful like in the movies,she said in 2017, two years after losing the weight. I did it because I could not walk up a short flight up stairs without stopping to take a break and wiping sweat from my brow. I did it because my body was physically rebelling against the brain that had been ignoring it for so long.
Janet Jackson has managed to stay fit after struggling to maintain a weight that she is happy with. The singer, who got pregnant at age 49, revealed she lost 70 pounds after giving birth. The 53-year-old worked out with a personal trainer four times a week and tries to eat a healthy diet without depriving herself of the food she loves. I dont eat meat anymore, just fish occasionally and veggies, she told InStyle in 2018. But I love catfish. I love a fried fish. But Im also crazy about grilled fish. I love Snickers. The pop star opened up about the pressures the music industry puts on women to stay thin and said that expectations are changing for the better. I think its changed, thank God, she had said. People are more accepting of others. Which is the way it shouldve been from the jump.
Drew Carey decided to slim down after deciding that It sucks being fat, he told People. Carey, 61, lost a whopping 80 pounds with strict diet and exercise in 2010. He cut out carbs, snacks on fruits and veggies, and turns to egg whites or greek yogurt for breakfast. He also does about 45 minutes of cardio when he can. By the time this movement control order (MCO) is entirely lifted, most people would likely weigh heavier.
Despite being physically active, our fitness routines may not be as intense as before and were probably burning fewer calories these days.
Heeding our Prime Ministers call to treat the MCO as an extended sit-at-home vacation also makes it difficult to resist the temptation to comfort-eat as the kitchen is just a few steps away.
The stress of being worried whether we or our loved ones will come down with Covid-19, job security, finances, and basically, what lies ahead, may lead to elevated cortisol levels that stimulate your appetite, causing you to forage for food in the fridge.
Do remember that cortisol not only promotes weight gain, but it can also affect where you put on the weight.
Many Malaysians seem to be cooking up a storm staying home, judging from their social media posts and thanks to YouTube videos.
Im fortunate to have a personal chef (my mother!) who dishes out nothing but the best at every meal.
For the past six weeks, shes also been baking consistently for the grandkids with me being the delivery driver.
As there are only two of us in the house, the neighbours are also beneficiaries of her sumptuous delights.
One neighbour commented that shed have to go on a diet if my mother fed her in this manner daily.
Im sure there will soon be tons of people looking for diet solutions after this vacation is over.
As many probably know, there is no shortcut to shedding the excess weight and keeping it off forever.
Here are three weight loss myths to take note of if you plan to embark on that journey.
Myth: One diet serves all
A healthy diet doesnt mean you have to stick to eating organic foods or vegetables only. Filepic
We are all built differently and come in all shapes and sizes.
Likewise, there is no single diet that works for everyone.
Your body type, hormones, genes, biological factors, environment, diet etc, all play a role in how quickly you lose weight.
Very rarely do you hear of people saying they tried one diet, and voila, they achieved their dream body.
Most of the time, people would have tried more than one diet plan before they find success.
Just because your friend swears by the intermittent fasting diet, doesnt mean that this diet is right for you.
There is no magic formula; some of us just lose or gain weight quicker than others.
I can have one episode of diarrhoea and shed one to two kilogrammes in a week.
Then itll take me months to put it back on again.
A fellow journalist claims that she can take a slice of cheesecake and put on a half a kilo!
Experiment and see what works for you, or seek advice from a healthcare professional.
Myth: Eat less and exercise more
Resistance, or strength, training helps you lose weight faster, in addition to cardio exercises. Filepic
In theory, this is true because to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume.
If what goes in is more than what comes out, then the excess has to be stored somewhere.
However, just eating salads and drinking protein shakes is not the answer.
Neither is eating purely healthy, organic foods or depriving yourself of desserts.
You need to strike a balance between healthy eating, regular exercise (not weekends only) and proper sleep.
Stop counting the calories and focus on the quality of food youre eating take small bites every few hours, instead of having only two meals, but binging during them.
Snack on nuts, fresh fruits and carrots.
Avoid highly processed food with lots of sugar, but once in a while, go ahead and have that banana fritter youve been craving for.
Your weight loss exercise regimen must include both cardiorespiratory (aerobic) and strength/resistance training.
Aerobic activity such as brisk walking, running or cycling helps increase the number of calories you burn a day, but it doesnt do much to help with muscle tone and strength.
After some time, your body will hit a plateau and you will no longer shed the excess kilos this is completely normal and utterly frustrating.
Thats one reason why you hear cardio bunnies complaining that their fat loss levels have stalled, despite ramping up their efforts.
As you get stronger, so should your workouts, and just because youre breaking a sweat, doesnt mean that youre working as intensely as you should be.
Incorporate some interval training into your plan, e.g. walk for three minutes and jog for one, then repeat the cycle a few times.
The benefits of strength training are plentiful it tones and sculpts muscles, trims fat and builds strong bones.
A good resistance workout increases your post-exercise oxygen consumption, which means your body continues to burn calories and keeps your metabolism active, even while resting.
And you must get adequate sleep because this is when your body rests and regenerates.
You might think that the more hours youre awake, the more calories youre burning, but thats not true.
In fact, people who dont sleep enough at night risk gaining extra kilos.
The longer you stay awake, the greater the chance youll have a craving for an extra snack or two, as the body needs energy to stay awake.
And the more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism, so not sleeping enough could be affecting how effectively your body burns calories.
If youre sabotaging your sleep, youll actually end up with more fat than muscles, despite all the resistance training.
Myth: Fitness trackers help you shed weight

The market is saturated with fitness trackers to track your daily steps, sleep patterns and basic health indicators.
You might be a slave to these initially, but as the novelty wears off, you will lose interest in caring about your fitness patterns.
In a 2016 study published by the Journal of American Medical Association, researchers followed 470 people who were trying to lose weight, for two years.
Subjects were split into groups and asked to either follow a low-calorie diet, increase their physical activity and attend group counselling; or to follow the same regimen, but add wearable technology six months in.
Those who were using wearables lost 7.7lb (3.5kg) on average, but the people who werent using them lost an average of 13lb (5.9kg).
It was puzzling why fitness trackers didnt help subjects lose more weight.
Study author John Jakicic and his team from the University of Pittsburgh, United States, said it was possible that when those wearing fitness trackers saw their physical activity throughout the day, they felt a false sense of security.
Assuming they had met their daily goals, they probably ate more.
On the other hand, the team also suggested that wearables may not have been encouraging for those in the study as they were already struggling to lose weight and didnt like physical activity.
So think twice about getting yourself a fitness tracker, unless youre motivated enough to follow through until your goals are met.

10 New Books We Recommend This Week – The New York Times

The great American Zen poet and eco-warrior Gary Snyder turns 90 on Friday. Ive been thinking a lot about Snyder lately, along with other nature-minded writers like Annie Dillard and Barry Lopez, as Ive grown more restless during lockdown and started spending time in the deep woods where I live. (OK, theyre not that deep. But neither was Walden Thoreau brought laundry to his mothers house! and they at least give the illusion of solitude.) Snyders no hermit. One thing I admire about his work is its sense of fellowship: how alert it is to the links between land and politics and culture. He writes about nature, sure, but also about human nature. In honor of his birthday, maybe spend a few minutes reading Axe Handles or Above Pate Valley.
Theres not much nature on this weeks list of recommended titles, but theres plenty of politics and culture. You could read Lawrence Wrights prescient new pandemic thriller, The End of October, if you dare. You say you prefer your world affairs without viruses? In that case we might suggest Dalia Sofers novel Man of My Time, about an Iranian mans path from revolutionary to government interrogator, or Gotz Alys history Europe Against the Jews, about the 19th-century political spasms that led to the Holocaust. Theres In Deep, in which David Rohde investigates the alleged existence of a bureaucratic deep state, or The Inevitability of Tragedy, in which Barry Gewen (a longtime editor at the Book Review) traces the roots of Henry Kissingers political philosophy. Or theres Nobodys Child, Susan Nordin Vinocours incisive look at the problems and promise of the insanity defense as its used in American jurisprudence.
We also recommend a Gothic novel set in the Italian Alps, a story collection about refugees and immigrants in North America, a memoiristic biography of the woman who founded Weight Watchers, and an immersion in the ways of French cooking courtesy of Bill Bufords Dirt which, come to think of it, has a lot to do with nature after all.

THE END OF OCTOBER, by Lawrence Wright. (Knopf, $27.95.) The sweeping, authoritative and genuinely intelligent thriller the sort of novel in which the author employs a bulldozer and a scalpel at the same time is a rare specimen, our critic Dwight Garner writes, and The End of October is one of those rarities. The fact that its about the world in shock and ruin because of a virus similar to Covid-19 makes it read as if its been shot out of a cannon.
MAN OF MY TIME, by Dalia Sofer. (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, $27.) Sofers second novel traces a mans path from baffled revolutionary in Iran to complicit actor in a ruthless regime sure he can undermine the system from inside. It is a master class in layering together a character who is essentially unforgivable but no less captivating. With Sofers considerable talents, the betrayals (of both self and others) that leave Hamid a brittle shell of a man are fully worthy of our intense gaze, Rebecca Makkai writes in her review.
THE ANCESTOR, by Danielle Trussoni. (Morrow/HarperCollins, $27.99.) When a genetic testing site reveals ordinary Bert Monte to be Countess Alberta Montebianco, heiress to a grand old estate in the Italian Alps, she decides to claim her birthright. Trussonis Gothic novel explores what happens next. The central contradictions in The Ancestor reside in the questions of who we are and where we belong of what divides us and what unites us, Carol Goodman writes in her review. Those are the mysteries were invited to discover in this chilling and inventive novel.
NOBODYS CHILD: A Tragedy, a Trial and a History of the Insanity Defense, by Susan Nordin Vinocour. (Norton, $28.95.) The insanity defense, deployed in fewer than 1 percent of criminal cases and successful only about a quarter of the time, nevertheless looms large in debates about crime and punishment. Vinocour shows the injustices of this sliver of our legal system meant to bring together psychiatric research and criminal law. She makes her case delicately, every page offering an incriminating new piece of evidence, scientific fact or court case that demonstrates just how unjust our legal system is to anyone suffering the misfortune of mental illness, our reviewer, Rachel Louise Snyder, writes.
THE INEVITABILITY OF TRAGEDY: Henry Kissinger and His World, by Barry Gewen. (Norton, $30.) In this magisterial account, Gewen, a longtime editor at the Book Review, traces the historical and philosophical roots of Kissingers famous realism, situating him in the context of Hannah Arendt and a cohort of other Jewish intellectuals who escaped Nazi Germany. The book is a timely and acute defense of the great realists actions, values and beliefs, according to John A. Farrells review. Gewens book is a thoughtful rumination on human behavior, philosophy and international relations,
IN DEEP: The FBI, the CIA, and the Truth About Americas Deep State, by David Rohde. (Norton, $30.) Rohde examines Donald Trumps contention that there is a deep state trying to undermine his presidency, offering a history of the conspiracy theory and concluding that, despite the presence of an institutional government made up of career civil servants, there is no such thing. Some of the books most fascinating passages trace the rise of William Barr, Trumps attorney general, from his time as a C.I.A. intern, Fred Kaplan writes in his review. Rohde highlights Barrs activism, along with a small group of other conservative lawyers, in the Federalist Society and the Catholic Information Center, which now exercise enormous influence. The tale of these groups is worth an entire book.
HOW TO PRONOUNCE KNIFE: Stories, by Souvankham Thammavongsa. (Little, Brown, $26.) Most of the characters in this spare and rigorous debut collection by Thammavongsa, a Canadian writer and poet, are immigrants in unnamed North American cities, struggling with loneliness and the challenges of mastering the English language. Thammavongsas spare, rigorous stories are preoccupied with themes of alienation and dislocation, her characters burdened by the sense of existing unseen, Sarah Resnick writes in her review. Thammavongsas gift for the gently absurd means the stories never feel dour or predictable, even when their outcomes are by some measure bleak.
THIS IS BIG: How the Founder of Weight Watchers Changed the World and Me, by Marisa Meltzer. (Little, Brown, $28.) This is a story of kinship between two women who never met: Meltzer, a journalist, and Jean Nidetch, the founder of Weight Watchers. The two have more in common than their struggles with the scale, as Meltzer frankly details. By toggling between Nidetchs story and her own, Meltzer positions herself and the weight-loss icon as battle buddies of a sort, separated by time and space, yet bound by efforts to lose weight and to thrive within the boundaries imposed on women of their respective generations, our reviewer, Lily Burana, writes. Meltzer has created a singular companionate text for those who know the agony of frustration surrounding weight as an issue, both personal and political.
EUROPE AGAINST THE JEWS: 1880-1945, by Gotz Aly. (Metropolitan/Holt, $32.99.) The origins of the Holocaust, Aly argues, are to be found in the rise of nationalism and the persecution of minorities that began in the late 19th century and solidified in the welter of new nation-states after World War I. Alys reminder of the usefulness of taking a close look at the quiet horrors of Europes interwar years feels all the more valuable today, Steven J. Zipperstein writes in his review. And his acknowledgment that comparisons between now and then once the province of the ill-informed deserve more serious attention from historians and others is just one of many reminders as to how far weve stumbled into an age of troubled sleep.
DIRT: Adventures in Lyon as a Chef in Training, Father, and Sleuth Looking for the Secret of French Cooking, by Bill Buford. (Knopf, $28.95.) Buford, whose last book was about Italian food, here delivers a delightful exploration of his immersion in French cuisine and its soul. This book may well be an even greater pleasure than its predecessor, Lisa Abend writes, reviewing it alongside two other culinary memoirs. MAMA June has been pictured taking part in a grueling yoga session in the midday Florida sun.
The reality star has been in Jensen Beach, Florida, and has picked up the centuries-old practice amid an ongoing court battle.

The 40-year-old has been on a recent fitness campaign to get healthy again after she gained 50lb following a series of surgeries to help her lose weight.
Focusing on easy stretches, the mom-of-four worked with a yoga instructor and showed off various poses including tabletop, downward dog and warrior.
A source said: "June has really been obsessing over her recent weight gain and is worried she will put on more if she doesn't get it under control now.
"She has been trying all different types of exercise and is finding Yoga to be one of her favorites."

June, who has battled with her weight since losing 300 pounds through bariatric surgery in 2016, has been working out with a friend in Florida every day during lockdown.
June, who once weighed 460lbs, got down to 160lbs after undergoing major gastric and plastic surgery, but has seen her weight creep up due to recent stress.
The Sun exclusively revealed that Mama June has gained about 45 pounds in recent months.
The mom-of-fours personal trainer - who helped her lose more than 100 pounds - said she could face health problems unless she loses weight.

June was arrested last year on allegations of crack possession.
The reality stars boyfriend, Geno Doak, was also arrested and charged with third-degree domestic violence, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

How to do the sirtfood diet
Though the diet is often hailed as easy to follow thanks to the fact it includes red wine and dark chocolate, its fairly strict in its guidelines.
The sirtfood plan relies on dieters restricting their calorie intake as well as eating a specific list of foods that are said to boost the metabolism.
The three-week plan involves an initial seven-day phase, followed by two weeks on phase two, AKA the maintenance phase.
One of the key components is a green juice which the founders call rocket fuel, which followers of the diet have to make up to three times a day.
Sirtfood green juice recipe
75 grams (2.5 oz) kale
30 grams (1 oz) arugula (rocket)
5 grams parsley
2 celery sticks
1 cm (0.5 in) ginger
half a green apple
half a lemon
half a teaspoon matcha green tea
Using a blender, juice all of the ingredients except for the green tea powder and lemon together, and pour them into a glass. Juice the lemon by hand, then stir both the lemon juice and green tea powder in.
This juice is important for phase one, which is designed to jump-start the weight loss. It involves restricting calories to just 1,000 a day (which is below the recommended daily intake).
Anyone following the plan would have three green juices per day plus one meal.
In the last three days of that initial week, the calorie intake increases to 1,500 a day, so you can add two more meals and have just two juices.
The recipes are all laid out in the official book, and include meals such as omelettes, salads and stir fries.
In phase two, dieters can then enjoy three sirtfood-rich meals and one sirtfood green juice a day, rather than watching the calorie count.
According to the founders, you should lose weight steadily throughout the plan.

COVID-19 is taking its toll in many ways. Aside from the serious tragedy of the loss of life, reports of uncontrolled hunger and eating are leading to predictions of the danger of increased obesity.
The following is intended to clarify how weight can be controlled when hunger is kept at bay using a reliable, informative tool called the glycemic index.
THE GLYCEMIC index (G.l.) began as a curious observation.
Edocrinologists treating diabetic patients would tell them to eat no sweets. This obviously meant no sugar in their coffee/tea, no cake, no chocolate and no soft drinks. When patients returned for their regular visits, the doctor routinely tested their blood for glucose. The discussion that followed naturally always entailed an inquiry about the food they had eaten since their last visit.
Doctors were puzzled to find that patients who followed their instructions and avoided sweets didn't test much better than those who said they tried to follow their orders but found it too difficult to stay away from sweet desserts and candy. This was confusing, frustrating, and seemed to be counterintuitive until 1981 when Dr David Jenkins, an Oxford University graduate doing research at the University of Toronto studied the effect of carbohydrates on blood glucose levels and the effect on weight.
He discovered that different carbs led to different increases of sugar, which cause the pancreas to release very different amounts of insulin, and we now know that insulin is the fat-storing hormone. This became a critical issue for people who want to lose weight; for diabetics who must keep their glucose under control; for prediabetics eager to avoid a diagnosis of diabetes; and for people suffering from disorders that are triggered by too much sugar in their system such as joint inflammation, kidney malfunction, cardiac disease, and mood disorders. You may have paid attention to the sugar high thats then followed by a sugar low after eating meals loaded with sugar, such as Chinese food, pizza and others that are seemingly sugarless.
SO, WHAT is the G.I. exactly, and how does it work?
We know that all carbs increase our blood sugar, and we now know that sugar causes a rise in insulin, which feeds our cells with the energy we need to move, breathe, talk, etc. However, eating lots of sugar for a long period of time will cause the insulin to store the extra sugar as fat, which is how we gain weight. The solution to this chain of events is found in the G.I., which is simply a very long list of foods that are listed according to how much sugar we receive when eating an item.
The foods on the list range from 0 to 100; the lower the number, the less sugar we get. No need to add or manage the number in any way. The name of the game is to eat the foods that are lowest on the list. So, to lose weight fast, eat items that range from 0 to 15 on the list; to lose weight, but slower, eat any of the foods that are from 15 to 35. If you don't need to gain or lose, eat the items that are from 35 to 55. Never eat things that are beyond 55.
Many studies have been done to establish the credibility of the G.I. One such study done at Florida Atlantic University is simple and instructive. A group of lab rats who shared the same weight, age, etc were divided into two groups and put in separate cages that had the same gym equipment that they all had to manoeuvre in order to reach the food at the opposite end of the cage. Those in Cage A were fed the typical (low G.I.) food that healthy lab rats are fed. In Cage B, the rats were fed only processed foods that contained high amounts of sugar (which is characteristic of the processed food marketed to us). Each group of rats was observed daily, watching for their level of activity, social behaviours and weight.
Within a short while, marked differences began to appear between the two groups. The rats fed their normal diet continued to behave as they had previously done. The experimental rats became heavy, sluggish, and showed a marked struggle to manoeuvre the gym equipment. To prove that sugar was addictive, increasing electric shocks were administered to the rats in both cages when they went for their food. When the shock became painful, the healthy rats preferred to forgo the food to avoid being shocked. The fat sluggish rats would suffer the pain of the shocks to get to the food.
And so we learned that sugar is not only fattening, its also addictive!

(NYSE American and TASE: LCTX), a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing novel cell therapies for unmet medical needs, announced today that Cancer Research UKs Commercial Partnerships has permitted Lineage to conduct an early exercise of its option to acquire data from Cancer Research UKs ongoing Phase 1 clinical trial of VAC2 in non-small cell lung cancer (NCT03371485), and develop an allogeneic dendritic cell therapy platform (VAC). Lineage will assume responsibility for further development of the VAC2 product candidate as well as future development opportunities derived from the VAC platform, while Cancer Research UK concludes the ongoing trial. This decision was based on an early review of the data collected by Cancer Research UK in the VAC2 trial under a clinical trial and option agreement. In addition, Cancer Research UK will provide input on the potential use of VAC in the infectious disease space to develop a vaccine against SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19. Clinical data recently collected by Cancer Research UK in the ongoing trial of VAC2 has shown peripheral immunogenicity in patients with non-small cell lung cancer, providing validation of the underlying mechanism of using allogeneic dendritic cells to present antigens to the bodys immune system. Evidence of immunogenicity was a key clinical signal which was necessary before we would consider taking over the program, stated Brian M. Culley, Lineage CEO.
