New Delhi, Apr 19 (IANSlife): Trying to lose weight can come with its own disappointment. Even when you believe that you are going the right way, there are times when your weighing scale doesnt budge.

Maybe, it's those fascinating fad diets are to be blamed but there can be other reasons. Celebrity nutritionist Nmami Agarwal shares a few common diet mistakes that people do while losing weight.

Eliminating Fats Completely

Fat is an important macronutrient. Period. Fats are crucial for brain health, heart health, gut health, and to provide suppleness to your skin. Many vitamins can only be absorbed by the body in the presence of fats. It's the type you choose to consume - refrain from having saturated fats like butter, margarine, hydrogenated and trans fats.

Fad Diet Trends

Diets that promise to do miracles with your weight and force you to follow the process of starving or choosing specific foods is a big problem. Crash diets work by eliminating important food groups from your diet say- carbs or fats and rely on limited sources of energy. These diets might give you short-term results but are non-sustainable for longer periods and once you're back to your normal eating regime, your weight bounces back, sometimes even more than before. Such diets also hamper with your metabolism, in the long run, affecting your digestion and absorption.

The solution? Stick to a balanced diet that has foods from every food group. Just master the art of portion control.

Extreme Calorie Restriction

It's a common misconception that the lesser calories you eat, the faster your weight loss will be. Yes, you might lose weight initially but at the cost of your overall health. Extreme calorie restriction can lead to severe nutritional deficiencies and can also give rise to food disorders hampering your mental health as well. Stick to a simple, basic diet regime comprising of whole foods like grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and dairy.

Keeping CALE going and seniors busy amid the Covid-19 pandemic – liherald

Five days a week in what was the carriage house on the former Hewlett Estate is a hive of activity as the small building on the Hewlett High School campus is home to the Center for Adult Life Enrichment.

Known as CALE to its nearly 300 members, what was once the Five Towns Seniors Center, caters to an active group of older adults from the Five Towns and surrounding South Shore communities. Offering an assortment of activities, programs and services, CALE provides what it calls a home away from home for its members.

Like nearly every other entity, CALE has closed during the coronavirus health crisis because of the social distancing mandates. However, that does not translate into not doing anything. Executive Director Lee Gerardi said that she has been at the center doing what needs to be done and it is sad that there is no one else there with her.

I am keeping up with my member and vendor community, she said. I check on them by a call or a social distance visit, email and when feasible I drop off something helpful. My heart is for them, especially at this unimaginable moment.

Two of the more active CALE members are Lawrence resident Claire Ganzfried and Stanley Brill, who lives in North Woodmere. Ganzfried, 86, led programs on exercise and crossword puzzles before the center shutdown because of the virus.

Ive been doing my exercise program that Im accustomed to and led two times a week, she said. I do crossword puzzles two, three, four times a day. I have a lot of crossword books. Its a lot of fun, I watch reruns of TV shows I never watched. I keep up on CALE members and make sure they are OK. My family is very good to me they leave things on the porch.

Brill, 91, said he was fine staying in the house, as initially he had plenty of food stored in his home for a winter that never came. His family leaves food outside in brown paper bags and he retrieves the items.

Im not scared, Im cautious, listening to what the instructions are, I do have a mask and wear gloves, he said. Im on the computer and on the piano Im not that good at it, I fool around. Crossword puzzles pretty much keeps me busy and the computer work for the center. Lets hope its a temporary situation.

Gerardi has Brill doing the centers May and June calendars, along with its Centerpiece newsletter. My days are either busy or still or fixated on the news and journaling all for future reference, she said. Praying and worshiping with my friends and spiritual community. Very grateful for technology. Not enjoying food shopping these days, yet appreciative for the senior hours now that I turned 60, adding laughter to what continues to be a sobering situation.

Ask the Nutritionist: What Do I Eat to Reverse Insulin Resistance? – BradfordToday

Dear Readers,

This is a continuation from a question last week from Suzanne of East Gwillimbury. She wanted to know what is understood about treating coronavirus holistically. I directed her to a prior article, in which I explored the various holistic interventions to strengthen the immune system naturally, which can be found here.

I also shared the single biggest thing you can do to reduce your chance of mortality from COVID-19, according to the data we have to date: reduce your insulin resistance. In addition, I would like to direct readers to a wonderful free resource Dr. Mercola has set up with in depth info on what is understood about the Coronavirus, holistically speaking. This week we will be exploring how to reduce insulin resistance by replacing some key foods and beverages you may be consuming. Doing this and getting a little nutrition education under your belt will help you prevent or reverse type II diabetes and metabolic syndrome - and tighten that belt a couple notches, too! Dont think these small actions cant have a big impact. Many disease states are precipitated by repeated overconsumption of the wrong foods that trigger a cascade of metabolic imbalances in the body. We can change that trajectory by changing the foods we eat. Its really quite amazing and simple! Lets take a closer look.

Initially, in response to that bowl of Sugar Ohs or that Big Sugar Slurp the body secretes insulin to pack away all that sugar for energy later. It first goes into our muscles and liver, but they can only hold a small amount. So the extra gets stored in our fat cells around our middle. Its stored quickly to protect us from sugar in the bloodstream, which is very dangerous over a certain threshold and causes tissue damage. This is the bodys intelligent way of protecting us from sugar damage while not letting any potential energy go to waste.

If the sugar and high glycemic carbs keep coming with regularity or if there is too much at once, the bodys insulin generating capacity kicks it up a notch. It excretes even more insulin to reduce blood sugar levels quickly, which causes blood sugar levels to drop quite low. We now need that stored energy, but unfortunately, we cant access it.

You see, insulin inhibits our bodys ability to access fat stores for energy. This is why people have such a hard time losing weight on a high carb diet. Sure, we can expedite this with exercise, but who feels like exercise when their blood sugar is low?

When blood sugar is low we typically feel it. Suddenly we have become hangry (hungry-angry) and are roaming around snarling at everyone in our way, hunting for a quick pick-me-up. Why doesnt our partner lift a finger to help around the house - are their hands broken? They seem to work for the remote/ cell phone just fine! And would it kill the kids to pick up after themselves for once and use some manners? And who in the world named your mother-in-law God? Does God know Shes been replaced? And why cant Patricia at work mind her own bloody business and stop trying to micromanage yours? And where is that ever-loving receipt for the dry cleaning? Nevermind the diet, we NEED a muffin/ donut/ ice cap/ biggie meal and we NEED IT NOW dammit! Where is the nearest drive through? And. We. Get. In. Our. Vehicles. And. Drive. In. This. State.

And that is my explanation for current divorce rates, ADD, the terrible teens, and road rage: its actually double-double-super-sized-caffeinated-bevy-and-carby-zero-nutrient-processed-junk-food-syndrome. Say that five times fast!

And changing our diets is therefore social justice work, people! It would do much to restore a happy home life, harmony on the roads, and savings in police and court budgets, all while reducing mortality from many diseases, giving us healthier bodies with greater energy, and helping us get many years of getting even with the kids when they have their own children! Its genius! Genius (holding my organic-celery-wielding-fist high for emphasis in a silent salute)! But I digress.

This state of hangry is perplexing because were eating more than we ever have before. In fact, portion sizes have about doubled since the 1950s. And yet were hungry! When it hits, we have often just eaten a meal (or a candy bar or a bag of woo hoos or drank a super-sized hip-whip-whatsit) an hour or two ago and gotten high off the sugar no less, but now we feel like we need a nap or are starving out of our minds! This is because the energy weve stored cant be released when insulin is present. And insulin is always around in the presence of excess sugar and carbs.

This is why we are so tired and wired. And this is why I firmly assert that obesity is actually a starvation state. Were eating and eating but not getting any energy from the food!

To make matters worse, when we get a blood test in this state we can be diagnosed as hypoglycemic (having low blood sugar), for which the mainstream medical prescription is to eat something sugary or carby to get our blood sugar back up. Do you see where this is headed? The prescription only signals more insulin to be released, which, in turn shuttles all that sugar to your waistline and keeps you hangry and initiates the cycle all over again!

Human beings have never in our history had such access to so many super tasty, high glycemic, processed, carb and sugar-laden foods. And our lifestyles have never been so sedentary. Our food supply has changed more in the past 70 years than in our entire evolutionary history.

Our bodies havent adapted. So when this excessive insulin is produced repeatedly and everything we eat goes to our waistline and our bodies cant use the fat theyve stored, we have to have a shut down mode. Our bodies signal the cells to stop accepting the insulin. When that happens and sugar continues to circulate in the bloodstream for too long, it inevitably damages the tissues, causing slow degradation that we dont always notice until we lose function.

And this is what we call insulin resistance or type II diabetes. It comes with a whole host of downstream health problems.

By this point our metabolic system is seriously tired and over-reactive. In addition we have often become depleted in several key nutrients that help regulate that system and were hooked on that sweet stuff that gives us a temporary lift. Our muscles are weak from the lack of nutrients and lack of exercise due to chronic low energy. And our blood sugar is all over the place.

The holistic solution is different than the medical model. Rather than trying force more sugar into the cells we focus on restricting carbohydrates of all kinds and fasting to reduce insulin and liberate the stored fat from the cells for energy. Once the body starts to burn fat for energy, it remembers how to do that and energy levels balance out, appetite drops, and the incessant cravings stop. Its truly miraculous to experience.

We just have to know what to eat and what to avoid. So lets tackle some of the biggest offenders and what you can replace them with to reduce blood sugar naturally!

Sugar - all kinds, even maple syrup, agave, and honey! Replace with monkfruit, stevia, xylitol, or erythritol for occasional sweets. I teach people how to replace sugars with healthier ones in my stop the sugar and healthy treats classes.

Artificial sweeteners - all of these can spike insulin just like sugar does, which is why so many people struggle with weight loss when frequently consuming them. Replace with the sweeteners above.

Soda - even those with artificial sweeteners. The one made with stevia is far better, or you can switch to homemade kombucha, which is an effervescent, fermented drink that helps put healthy bacteria in your gut for better digestion. I teach people how to make it in my kombucha and fun with fermenting classes.

Vegetable oils - canola, soy, margarine, crisco, sunflower, safflower, hydrogenated and trans fats. Replace these with organic coconut, olive, avocado, and macadamia nut oils or organic butter or ghee. Or use lard, tallow, goose grease, or other animal fat. These will help improve the lining of every cell in your body.

Processed foods. Replace anything that is heavily processed and comes from a factory with whole foods that come from an animal or a plant and are in their natural form!

Baked foods. Replace all but homemade ones. And bake with low carb flours like almond and coconut flour. We tend to think of baked foods as natural but even if they are made with the best whole grains they still often spike blood sugar!

Breads - all but low carb varieties. We tend to think of whole wheat bread as healthy but two pieces of whole wheat bread spike blood sugar more than a tablespoon of white sugar or a snickers bar. And wheat is not an optimal food for many reasons.

High carbohydrate snack foods like chips, sweetened peanut butter, popcorn, candied nuts, corn chips, or others. Sure, nuts with honey on them look natural, but that honey is usually high fructose corn syrup and theyre fried in vegetable oils. For snacks reach for natural or salted nuts and seeds or unsweetened yogurt and a bit of fruit or homemade grain free granola or fresh veggies and dip or snacks with almond and coconut flours. I teach many great ones in my healthy treats class.

Potatoes and starchy tubers. If you are insulin resistant or overweight you want to limit these to a very small amount once in a while, as they are high in carbs that spike insulin.

Processed meats. Use natural meats or canned or smoked seafood instead of hyper processed deli cuts. The exception to this is quality cured or smoked meats. Read a more in depth analysis of this here.

Replacing these foods for the healthier substitutes will go a long way to helping you reduce your blood sugar naturally and prevent or stop the progress of insulin resistance. Chemists are decoding the fruity scent of lemur stink flirting Read now – Massive Science

From the tip of a poofy tail, to the tip of a dog-like wet nose, ring-tailed lemurs can communicate in silence.

The lemurs an endangered primate native to Madagascar are known for a particularly acute sense of smell compared to other primates. Scent glands on their genitals, shoulders, and wrists let them communicate specific messages for fighting, climbing the social ladder, and flirting or stink-flirting. In a new study published today in the journal Current Biology, chemists from the University of Tokyo have pinpointed the fruity, floral chemicals key to lemur love connections. Some may rush to declare this as the first discovery of primate pheromones, but experts are reluctant to agree.

During breeding season, a male ring-tailed lemur will slip his long tail in and out of his arms. As the tail slides through, it rubs against scent glands in his wrist. The male then wafts his tail toward a female, dispersing a diverse bouquet of smelly chemicals.

Previous research has suggested that female lemurs are more receptive to males flirting this way than those not spreading scents. Its not yet clear whether stink-flirting actually leads to more mating. But given the ring-tailed lemurs reliance on smell, zoologists suggest that the animal may indeed communicate with sex pheromones.

Efforts to unravel the chemical secrets behind lemurs smell-based communication are nothing new. Groundbreaking research from Christine Drea at Duke Universitys Department of Environmental Anthropology has reported chemical analyses for genital and shoulder scent glands for both sexes and across seasons, shaping our understanding of lemur behavior and social order. But unlike the greasy paste from shoulder glands, wrist glands produce small volumes of fast-evaporating clear liquid. Analyzing that volatile wrist cologne has been difficult, and decoding its contents was a long time in the making.

About 10 years ago, one of the co-authors, [Isao] Munechika was actually kind of living with the lemurs at the [Primate Research] Institute, says Kazushige Touhara, a Professor at the University of Tokyo and the studys lead author.

According to Touhara, Munechika was puzzled by the lemurs tail-wafting behavior. Touhara, an expert in the chemistry behind animal odors, stepped in with advanced methods in chemistry.

Over the course of seven years, the team painstakingly collected the tiny amounts of clear liquid from male lemur wrists. Each sample measured about 1/1000th of a tablespoon. It takes time to collect samples, Touhara said. And to get the secretion from the wrist, you have to have a really good relationship with the animals.

Using a chemical analyzer tailored for volatile odors, the team succeeded in capturing the elusive volatile components found in male lemur wrists throughout each year. They learned that levels of three fruity and floral smelling chemicals spring up during breeding season. At least two of these molecules, tetradecanal and dodecanal, are known to affect sexual behavior in insects.

But are these chemicals actually important for lemur sexual behavior? Maybe. The new study's findings suggest that increased levels of testosterone lead to increases in these particular chemicals. And female lemurs may have a nose for them too. After the researchers added the three chemicals to a cotton pad, female lemurs seemed very interested curiously sniffing the cotton pad more during the breeding season than non-breeding season.

Some may be tempted to hype the findings as the first time pheromones have ever been seen in primates. The word "pheromone" can carry a lot of weight. Pheromones may be useful for conservation of some insects, but applying that idea seems even more distant of a plan for lemurs endangered from habitat loss (deforestation). Scientists have pondered about the existence of human pheromones. But experts are reluctant to use that label. Im not saying that lemurs dont have pheromones, said Drea, who is unaffiliated with the study. But I am saying that this paper is not demonstrating that they do.

Defining a pheromone can be tricky and arbitrary. Drea, the Duke University anthropologist who studies mammals, likens it to drawing a line in the sand. Tristram Wyatt, a Senior Research Fellow of Zoology at the University of Oxford studies pheromones across the animal kingdom. Wyatt is also careful and methodical about the term.

When you say something is a pheromone, there are a number of things that follow from that, said Wyatt. The problems come when were studying pheromones in new species particularly in mammals. With most mammals, there is a lot we dont know about the senders odor and the receivers nose and behavior.

Asked whether this studys results could be the first recorded primate pheromones, Wyatt was cautiously optimistic. These are really promising candidates, and weve not had those before, Wyatt said, But what we dont know at this stage, is that it actually affects anything to do with sex.

Touhara seemed to agree. We dont know what happens after the female is interested in this odor, he said. So we have to really show that this enhances mating to be able to say that this is definitely a pheromone.

Actually getting that evidence with ring-tailed lemurs means that future research should go beyond testosterone injections and female sniff tests. According to Drea, controlling lemur testosterone levels (up or down) is an established research practice, but long-term hormonal manipulation would require an implant. On the female side of things, prolonged sniffing during breeding season may seem like sexual attraction, but it doesnt prove it. Researchers need to show that this fruity mixture of molecules specifically leads to more mating.

In humans, that sort of chemical communication is unlikely. Touhara doesnt believe human sex pheromones exist, despite the fact that the human sense of smell is better than previously thought.

Using his own nose, though, Touhara smelled the lemur wrist secretion for himself. Pretty good, actually, he said, laughing. This was kind of one of the surprising results.

Similar signaling chemicals from mice are stinky, but Touhara was pleased to find the lemurs scent to smell like pears. These anecdotes may not prove any science about the lemurs, but they add to a colorful history of humans making sense of the sights and smells around us.

Wyatt shared the story of French entomologist, Jean-Henri Fabre. In the 19th century, Fabre noticed male moths would fly long distances to find females. But that attraction seemed to fall apart when the female moths sat in a sealed glass container.

And [Fabre] almost nailed it, that it must be an invisible chemical signal it must be smell, said Wyatt, tickled by the twist to come. And then he makes the mistake of sniffing the female, and he cant smell anything. So he says, Well it cant be the sense of smell...And that set back pheromone research about a hundred years.

Will reopen next week, says Hartland fitness club owner – Greater Milwaukee Today

HARTLAND Eric Mullett owns four Snap Fitness locations in the region as well as a private aviation firm.

With no customers exercising in recent weeks, Snap Fitness still has bills to pay, without their revenue coming in.

Weve got four clubs. They roughly cost us about $10K a month to keep open and we have zero revenue. Weve added around $40,000 in debt to our portfolio, he said, which eventually will have to be repaid.

The clubs three part-time employees and trainers who work as contractors have been let go. But they will soon be needed Mullett said on Friday the clubs will reopen next week.

We are reopening next Saturday, he said. Regardless of what Gov. Evers has said, we feel this is a violation of our civil rights. We have a right to protect our businesses, our families, our communities and we are reopening.

He said the businesses wont be charging customers as usual instead they will accept donations for food pantries and to help support other businesses in the same straits.

We are trying to support the right things here that the governor has asked us to do and even the president has asked us to do with social distancing to offset the curve. At some point enough is enough and we have to get back whats been taken away, said Mullett.

Planet Fitness stock was up 10% at $55.11 in trading on Friday following Trumps phase one recommendations to restart the U.S. economy that would allow it to open itself back up - so long as it adheres to strict physical distancing and sanitation protocols.

The administration's 18-page guidance document, revealed on Thursday,details three phases to reopen state economies, with each phase lasting, at minimum, 14 days.

Phase one includes much of the current lockdown measures such as avoiding non-essential travel and not gathering in groups, though it says large venues such as restaurants, places of worship and sports venues "can operate under strict physical distancing protocols."

Gym operators have been hit particularly hard during the pandemic and ensuing shutdown of all non-essential businesses, which has left them with rent and other overhead costs but no income from monthly memberships.

Meantime, at-home fitness equipment and exercise-training providers have performed well through the Covid-19 crisis, with the likes of Peloton (PTON) - Get Reportand Nautilus (NLS) - Get Reportposting solid gains in recent weeks as fitness buffs move to workouts from home.

Shares of Peloton were down 7.54% at $33.61 in trading on Friday, while shares of Nautilus were down 9.14% at $4.67.

Marketing itself as a "Judgment Free Zone" that caters to novice and casual gym users,Hampton, N.H.-based Planet Fitness operates 1,859 clubs throughout the U.S., Canada and Central America.

State tells fitness centers that consumers can cancel their memberships any time, for any reason – seattlepi.com

In response to dozens of consumer complaints, Attorney General Bob Ferguson sent a letter to Washington fitness centers and gyms Friday providing the following guidance:

Fergusons letter warns that any gym failing to comply is violating the Washington State Consumer Protection Act, and will face legal action from his office.

My office received dozens of complaints from Washington consumers that their fitness center is continuing to charge them membership fees in the midst of this crisis, Ferguson said. The law is clear: Washingtonians are allowed to cancel their gym memberships any time, for any reason.

Fergusons guidance applies to all health studios, defined in the Washington State Health Studio Services Act as any person or entity engaged in the sale of instruction, training, assistance or use of facilities which purport to assist patrons to improve their physical condition or appearance through physical exercise, body building, weight loss, figure development, the martial arts, or any other similar activity.

Nothing in the law prohibits a fitness center from waiving the written requirement and accepting cancelations from its members by phone. Gyms can also comply with the law by not charging membership fees until gyms can safely reopen.

The letter states that the Attorney Generals Office has contacted many gyms and fitness centers that have already frozen memberships or issued refunds.

Consumer protection lawsuits brought by the Attorney Generals Office can seek civil penalties of up to $2,000 per violation plus consumer restitution.

Anyone experiencing problems with their fitness center membership is encouraged to file a consumer complaint with the Attorney Generals Office at http://www.atg.wa.gov/file-complaint.

Injury Update: Alisson Becker Regaining Fitness During Coronavirus Shutdown – The Liverpool Offside

Growing up, my dad, a nice Jewish guy from New York, was obsessed with bluegrass and country music. That meant every morning on the way to school, the radio was tuned to WPOC, the country station in Baltimore. I have to admit, I grudgingly picked up some of his musical tastes through diffusion. I have come here to admit that I was a country fan through college.

One of the songs that sticks with me is Alan Jacksons Remember When. It seems appropriate these days, if for the title alone.

Remember when Liverpool last played? It was about a month and a week ago, that disastrous loss to Atletico Madrid in extra time. It feels like a lifetime ago.

Remember when Alisson Becker was last fit? It was February 29, the epic collapse against Watford.

After that not so great jaunt down memory lane, I am here to bring you some good news at least. When Liverpool next play, whenever that may be, Alisson Becker is likely to be fit and ready to step between the posts. Between recording videos for the Safe Hands initiative, Alisson has been training hard at home.

He sent videos, doing some jumping and exercises, said John Achterberg, goalkeeping coach extraordinaire. Obviously, we were working with him until the lockdown and he was basically fit.

Well, thats a little bit of brightness during these gloomy times. Achterberg continued on to talk about now the training routines were focused on maintaining fitness.

Now its for him to maintain it in the house, like the other goalkeepers. They all get their programmes from the fitness department so they will do the job and the work to try to stay as fit as they can, like all the other players as well.

Alisson seems to be taking those sentiments to heart. Here is a video of him maintaining his distribution by throwing a ball very accurately at his house.

So, Alisson Becker is fit and raring to go it seems. Hopefully we can sometime soon say remember when Liverpool won the league with Alisson in goal?
