For Rockenstein, the quarantine has not diminished her workout nor her spirits.

Rockenstein offered some tips as to how you can form an effective home exercise program. For many, the aging process has a way of slowing down the active lifestyle we grew up accustomed to living. This makes improving health an important issue for those in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and above. Many of us are facing role reversals by taking care of our precious parents who noticeably have slowed down because of their ages.
For many, the aging process has a way of slowing down the active lifestyle we grew up accustomed to living. This makes improving health an important issue for those in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and above. Many of us are facing role reversals by taking care of our precious parents who noticeably have slowed down because of their ages.
So whether we stay health and nutrition conscious for ourselves, parents, or kids, it is definitely an important time to take a serious look at it, move it to the top of the priority list, and continue to take proactive steps to improve it as we go through the next active 50-70 years of our lives.
Physical fitness and proper nutrition for the body is like getting a full tank of good gas, an oil change, and tune-up for a car engine. It enables us to perform up to our full potential. It gives us the ability to handle daily tasks vigorously and alertly, and still have enough energy left over for enjoying leisure activities that we love, as well as dealing with emergency situations in our lives that we hate. Improved fitness and nutrition provides our body and mind the support to withstand stress, to carry on in circumstances where an unfit person would no longer be able to continue. It is simply a major basic for good health and well-being.
Physical fitness involves the performance of the heart, lungs, and muscles. Keeping our bodies physically fit also has a major impact on blood flow to the brain, which can affect what we can do with our minds, mental alertness, and emotional stability. As we all know to well, life can bring challenges that require us to be healthy and strong to handle them positively!
Always start your fitness programs by first seeing a doctor! They can evaluate your current status, and provide vital advice to best suit you, and finally continue to monitor and check your progress later into the program. Most older people-even with disabilities-can take part in moderate exercise programs with guidance, and everyone can, and absolutely should include a solid nutrition program. People who exercise are also less likely to suffer from fractures and injury due to accidents. Exercise, proper nutrition, and hydration must become one of the things you do without question, just like bathing and brushing your teeth.
Another area of concern as we age is gaining weight around the belly. Not only is it unattractive weight, but it is very unhealthy. For every inch your waistline exceeds the size of your chest it increases the risk factors for life. As we age this task of increasing inches in the middle happens so effortlessly. This is not good because lack of exercise and a weak abdomen can interfere with proper functioning of the organs inside it, and from facilitating movements of the trunk and legs; the stomach muscles provide protection for the liver, kidneys, and pancreas.
Sitting gives stomach muscles little to do, and so they weaken. And because sitting gives the rest of our bodies little to do, we fatten. It is a vicious cycle: As our increasing waistline makes movement more difficult, movement begins to decrease, and less movement means fewer calories are burned. Fewer calories burned means more calories stored around the middle. So the answer is come on baby boomers, lets get ourselves and our families up and moving towards improved health now!
Patience is the key here. You cant gain in a few days or weeks what you have lost in years of aging, but you can get your flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance back if you slowly and consistently persevere as a way of life. This translates into an active and more vibrant quality of life for all of our living years! We can do this!

In 2016, CrossFit Games athlete Marcus Filly sold his CrossFit affiliate and signed a non-compete clause preventing him from opening a gym in the area for at least one year.
Filly found himself without a physical location, forced to find a way to continue to service his clients, and continue to build his client base before he was allowed to open OPEX Revival in San Rafael, California.
Sound familiar?
It kind of forced my hand, just like how COVID(-19) is forcing gym owners to go remote now, he said. I was forced to do exactly that in 2016.
At the time, Filly had a small online client base, who accounted for about 10 percent of his clientele.
Today, just prior to COVID-19, 80 percent of Fillys clients were already purely online clients, while the other 20 percent trained with him at his gym in California.
In recent weeks, Filly has, of course, shifted his on-site clients to become online clients, as his facility is currently closed. For the most part, the shift has been seamless, Filly said, because these clients were never paying for a facility, per se. His clients have always been paying for an individual training program and monthly lifestyle consults with a personal coach, which hasnt changed amidst the pandemic, he explained.
My on-site clients were also already getting access to the same virtual services as my remote clients (including the TrueCoach app for delivering programming), so the only difference was that the bulk of their training was done in front of us on site, he explained.
As a veteran of online coaching, Filly offered these three tips to coaches and gym owners, who have recently overhauled their business from in-person to online.
One of the biggest mistakes Filly said he sees remote coaches make is becoming so consumed with writing a perfect training program that they forget to take the time to get to know their clients individuality.
You put a coach behind a keyboard, and it gets super easy to become focused on just the programming, because thats the product it seems youre delivering. Its how youre expressing your knowledgethrough a written programso they get too focused on the details of the program, Filly said.
Thanks to years of coaching experience, and the education he received through OPEX, Filly has learned theres more to it than the training program, even with online clients.
The reality is, when youre coaching people, the service is really about the relationships, so you still need to build a strong connection with the client. Lots of people lose sight of thatIt can be as simple as sending someone the right text message even, he said.
In Fillys experience, there are always about 10 percent of people who need a little extra care, attention and motivation, so you need to pay close attention to those clients now more than ever, he said. And this cant be done just via a group workout, he explained.
If youre running a group class online kind of thing and someone comes up with a challenge, and you dont have a personal connection to help them, theyre going to be like, Im out of here, he said.
Filly added: It just comes back to really establishing good communication systems to let the client know theyre going to be supported and theyre receiving good information and youre going to navigate whatever obstacles that come up with them in the upcoming weeks. If they dont feel connected to their coach, theyll think, I dont think this is worth it.
Filly admits transitioning clients who originally signed up for in-person coaching does have its challenges.
Some people have the mentality that they go to the gym to get taken care of. Their thinking is to just get to the gym. They go to the gym to be guided, he said. Those people like getting to see their coach several times a week and now they have to learn what its like to see their coach maybe once a month on Zoom.
These people need more education and self-accountability, so they can become more self-sufficient, Filly explained. When a client is educated and understands the concepts and philosophies behind their training, theyll be able to have success even when their coach isnt there to hold their hand.
COVID-19 reinforces the fact that a lot of clients arent self-sufficient. So I think we all need to be doing a better job at teaching self-sufficiency. That doesnt mean clients need to do it on their own. Its more about helping them become real thinking consumers and athletes, Filly said.
He added: With remote clients, this is really important or else you have no idea what theyre doing, so you have to address the philosophy and theories, so they have a better understanding of what theyre doing and why.
If theyre too self-sufficient, wont they stop valuing my coaching?
Many personal trainers and fitness coaches are scared to create independent, self-sufficient clients, as they assume these clients might no longer need them if they become knowledgeable themselves.
While Filly acknowledged this can happen from time to time, its certainly not the majority of people.
I know what Im doing, but I still appreciate having a coach to correct my form, said the experienced coach and veteran athlete. If you empower people and educate and teach them, usually theyll just want you more and more coaching.
When Filly has lost a client here or there who thinks they can do it on their own, they often still end up referring new clients to him, he said. Other times, they try coaching themselves for a while and eventually return to him.
And also, if I can educate someone to be able to think for themselves when it comes to their fitness, then thats a really great gift to give someone, Filly said. That person might not be paying me $300 a month anymore, but in my experience, they often come back because they realize they still want the accountability.
Not only that, it takes years for someone to get to a point where they think they can program and coach themselves, he explained.
You have to put in so much energy to get someone to that place. It doesnt take months. It takes years, he said. So its really not something to worry about.
While most coaches and small gyms right now are focused on retaining current clients, Filly pointed out there are still opportunities to build your client base even amidst a pandemic.
Gaining new clients, I think, is just about learning the psychology of someone who is inside stuck at home and not able to go anywhere, he said.
Brianna Lamb, another OPEX coach who coaches at Fillys gym, agrees.
There are hundreds of thousands of people without a training facility right now, said Lamb, who has 65 clients shes currently working with remotely.
She added: Theres a huge space to create a lower barrier of entry. To get people working out, who were scared to look stupid or silly at the gym. If you can build trust with them, then theres a huge opportunity right now to bring them in.
Lamb has seized this opportunity and has managed to pick up five new clients since OPEX Revival closed their physical space due to COVID-19.
But where Filly really sees the real opportunity for online coaching right now is through individual program design, as opposed to generic at-home group programming.
Everyone is offering online group workouts right now, so thats a really competitive market. If youre going to play that game, you better play it really well, offer the best workouts and the best user interface, he said. (Where I see the opportunity is through) connecting with people and delivering a personal coaching service. Speak to the value of having a personal coach at this time versus just another workout service.
Filly added: Its troubleshooting time, but I think the most successful coaches will be providing individual coaching, where the client has someone to help them create the right space and energy for (their individual needs).

A study conducted by Chinese researchers in February had suggested that men are more likely to contract with coronavirus compared with females. The study report also revealed that 68 percent of the people infected with COVID-19 were males. Now, a top researcher has revealed that the most probable cause that increases the susceptibility of men to coronavirus infection is the testosterone level in the male body.
Why are men at risk of coronavirus infection?
Daniel Kelly, a lecturer in biochemistry at the Sheffield Hallam University, believes that testosterone plays a crucial role in elevating the risk of coronavirus among men. It should be noted that testosterone is the male hormone, while oestrogen dominates the female body. Several previous studies had claimed that elevated levels of testosterone in a male body will negatively affect the person's immune system.
"One theory is that the male sex hormone, testosterone, has a dampening effect on the immune system, making men more susceptible to the novel coronavirus. But just how plausible is this theory? An overview of the scientific evidence suggests that oestrogen can improve the immune system and increase immune inflammation whereas testosterone (the male sex hormone) reduces or dampens the response. As a result, women often have less severe infections than men and have significantly stronger immune responses to vaccinations," wrote Kelly in a recent article published in The Conversation.
However, Kelly revealed that coronavirus could lower the testosterone levels in a male body, but still men are at a higher risk of contracting the virus. Theoretically saying, lower testosterone levels should actually increase the immunity of the person, but the body will not be wishing to alter the hormonal level, especially while fighting a deadly disease.
Factors that increase risk of getting infected with coronavirus
As per Kelly, underlying conditions in a human body have direct impacts in determining the severity of coronavirus infection. The researcher also made it clear that age is another factor that elevates the chances of mortality after getting contracted with COVID-19.
"A major factor in how severe infection may become is whether a person has an underlying disease. While this is easy to understand, what is not so clear is the effect that the reduced levels of testosterone that happen during illness have on the likelihood of the infection developing into something more severe in men. As men age, their testosterone levels decrease, offering the possibility that increased severity of infections in elderly men may be due to lower levels of testosterone rather than simply the presence of testosterone" added Kelly.

DENVER, April 18, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to current media stories regarding Low T Center's commitment to meeting the needs of Colorado patients during this COVID-19 Emergency, Low T Center provides the following for immediate release.
On April 9, the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment released its 4th Updated Public Health Order (PHO) 20-24, encouraging Critical Businesses to remain open: "Critical Businesses, as defined below, are exempt, subject to certain limitations, from this PHO and are encouraged to remain open." Part C of PHO 20-24 states, "Any business . . . engaged primarily in any of the service activities listed below, may continue to operate as normal." PHO 20-24 defines a Critical Business as "Healthcare Operations, Including: . . . clinics, and walk-in health facilities . . . Medical . . . care, including ambulatory providers . . . [and] laboratory services." On April 6, 2020, Governor Polis issued Executive Order 2020 024 stating, "I direct all Coloradans to stay at home, unless necessary to provide, support, perform, or operate Necessary Activities . . . Necessary Travel or Critical Businesses as such terms are defined in PHO 20-24 . . . " The Order provides that "Necessary Activities" include . . . "Engaging in activities . . . including, but not limited to . . . without limitation, obtaining medical supplies . . . obtaining durable medical equipment, obtaining medication, [and] visiting a healthcare professional . . . " On that same day, the Governor issued an amended Executive Order D 2020 027, prohibiting voluntary or elective surgical procedures, if same could be safely postponed for at least three months.

Proper treatment of chronic hypogonadism requires office visits, labs, and continued therapy.For the individuals that require this therapy, interrupting, deferring or otherwise discontinuing therapy for a period of three months would lead to severe adverse effects, and place these patients at risk. Similarly, failing to provide treatment for diabetic patients, patients suffering from respiratory disorders, and serious cardiologic issues, is simply not acceptable, and would be contrary to the treatment guidelines employed at Low T Center.Remote treatment protocols are enabled for patients whose medical conditions do not require an in-person visit to the clinic.
For many of our patients, Low T Center is the sole provider of their preventive and primary care services. As noted above, in addition to having extensive clinical and research experience in diagnosing and treating hypogonadism, Low T Center also provides vital and continuous life-saving evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and control of a variety of chronic, serious, and potentially life-threading disorders including cardiometabolic health, obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension, cholesterol disorders, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and other chronic men's health issues including cardiovascular risk assessment and prevention. Consistent with Executive Order D 2020 027, these important primary care assessments and treatments cannot be delayed (as with any primary care office) as there would be 1) "a threat to the patient's life," 2) "a threat of permanent dysfunction of an extremity or organ system," (e.g., chronic limb ischemia risking amputations or progression of chronic kidney disease or heart failure.) These conditions require close physical and laboratory follow-up and monitoring of both the disease as well as the response to therapy. Furthermore, there is 3) "risk of . . . progression" particularly of the target organs of hypertension, cholesterol disorders, and diabetes manifesting as preventable strokes, heart attacks, limb damage, blindness, kidney failure, and heart failure - all of which require close medical management and adjustment of medical therapy to prevent.
Executive Order D 2020 027 rightly lets "the doctor make the decision," by granting the "treating medical facility" the exclusive discretion to determine whether a three month delay or interruption in treatment would risk the health of the patient. It would be unfortunate indeed that a hypertensive Coloradan would die, because the access to the care he needed, was postponed for three months. The Governor's Order expressly recognizes this principle, by leaving the classification of "voluntary" to the patient's medical professionals.
Low T Center does not believe Governor Polis' Order prohibits Coloradans from obtaining medically necessary treatment for diabetes, hypogonadism, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, receiving allergy antigens, obtaining medical laboratory testing, receiving treatment for thyroid disorders, obtaining continuous positive airway pressure devices for the treatment of respiratory conditions, or any of the other medically necessary services provided to patients at Low T Center healthcare facilities. The Order uses the words "without limitation" which means Low T Center's patients should have the right to visit their healthcare provider - without limitation, for these important continuing care services.By signing the Order, Governor Polis assured Coloradans that they would be able to continue to receive their medical care during this time, by expressly classifying these activities as "Necessary Activities." Low T Center physicians, nurse practitioners, and medical staff are persons involved in operating a Critical Business which are necessary to help patients with these Necessary Activities.
Also, very relevant to the current COVID-19 crisis, outpatient centers like Low T Center significantly reduce the likelihood of requiring care in both Emergency Departments and acute care hospitals - where patients may have enhanced risk of both contracting SARS-CoV-2 and developing a potentially life-threatening and/or fatal complication of COVID-19.
Finally, Low T Center's protocol committee has mandated a series of workplace safety initiatives designed to implement social distancing guidelines. The clinic operational teams continue to adhere to enhanced cleaning and sterilization protocols. You may have heard of a little company called Oculus
in the last year or two or their new headset called the Oculus Quest. If youre familiar with VR feel free to skip right to the next paragraph, but for those of you who arent, quick backstory. Oculus began as a small studio with the idea of bringing head-mounted displays to the mainstream market (keep in mind they were to be the first to do this). After launching their first prototype the DK1, Facebook, another small company you may have heard about, decided to give them some money and by some money, I mean 2 Billion dollars, and by giving some money I really mean they acquired the whole studio along with the name. Facebook believing in the future of VR for a long time was a bit of a joke in the industry. Ever since HTC came out with the Vive, it smoked the original Oculus Rift into the ground in a lot of ways. But now things are different. Times have changed and the race for ultra-powerful, pc-tethered, high resolution headsets is taking a bit of a side-step in terms of goals. Enter the Oculus Quest. Facebooks new version of what VR should be: No cables, no PC, just wireless fun. So lets take a look and see how they did.
As a bit of a PC-VR purist, I really wanted to hate this headset when it first came out. Let me explain. The Oculus quest has been out for about two months now and I wanted to give you my thoughts on it because it does some things really well that the PC-based headsets do, but it also lacks a few major features which, for the price point is understandable. To start this off I want to talk about my a couple favourite things about the headset and then Ill talk about the stuff that I dont really love.
First things first, I want to talk about the quality of the panel because I was actually really surprised about this coming from an HTC Vive and using the Vive Pro as well as the new Valve Index. I was expecting this headset to have lots of screen door effect, be not that high resolution and the frame rate to be really bad. And honestly even though this panel is only 72 Hertz, its actually really not that noticeable in most games.
The fact that I can play on a 72 Hertz panel versus a Vive and just go back and forth and not really care about the differences, that really means that the Quest is doing something really well. There are some experiences in which you start to notice a few hiccups in the performance but the display itself is is phenomenal. Its really sharp, the colors are amazing and the refresh rate honestly is more than adequate. If any of you are worried that because the Quest starts at $399 the display nut might not be that good, prepare to be surprised because this thing is quite awesome.
The second thing that I love about the Oculus Quest is obviously the six degrees of freedom (6DOF). If you are unfamiliar with VR Ill try to keep this short: Six degrees of freedom basically means that if I take a real step in real life it moves me one step in the game. If youre crouching, dodging and shooting around using controllers to map your hands out, it tracks all of that. Six degrees of freedom has usually been solely locked to computer based VR. You had to set up 2 sensors for the Vive, and 2 or 3 on the Oculus Rift just to build out your space to play. Its been a huge deal for a long time and its been a big inhibitor for a lot of people just getting into VR; they cant dedicate a space to it.
The amazing thing about the Oculus Quest is that you can literally just put on the headset and the four ultra-wide cameras look at the space figure around you and figure out where the walls and floor is. You literally just draw a circle on the floor and it just boots up the game. Its absolutely amazing and the fact that it remembers five spaces, you can go to your friends house and if it detects the same space you drew last time you were there, it will pop you right back into the game. I think thats such a big deal because a lot of people are really scared to get into VR because its so intimidating due to all the setup and all the hardware costs.
The six degrees of freedom on the Quest is absolutely awesome in terms of quality. Theres barely ever any tracking issues. Obviously if youre outside or something like that theres some issues, you have to play in the shade. The only time Ive ever had a tracking issue is with the controllers but well talk about that in a little bit. In terms of the headset rotation and tracking, Its been rock solid for me and I absolutely love that.
The third thing that I love about the Quest is the speakers and I know that sounds really silly but coming from a PC-based VR headset. The fact that I had to put on headphones and I would get completely isolated from the outside world is one of those things that its fun but you just get so hot. You have your earphones on, your headset on, it gets hot and you just lose yourself. The fact that the Quest allows you to put the headset on and it starts playing sound around your ears is awesome. Ive been able to play and have conversations with people without a problem.
I was recently letting my parents and my grandparents try the headset and I was able to talk to them and tell them things that they might not have otherwise heard. So when theyre playing Beat Saber and theyre stepping too far forward, I can just say, Hey, take a quick step back and they do because they can still hear you. Its honestly such a big deal for them and the fact that the sound comes straight into your ears, its pretty close to surround. Theres a few times where Ive been like whoa someones behind me and it really helped me position the enemy.
I was pleasantly surprised by the speakers on the Quest and I have not once plugged in headphones ever and I dont think that I will be. For the most part, if youre playing in a loud environment then obviously youll probably want some headphones, but the nice thing is you can just pop them in either headphone jack on the side of the headset. I think this is probably my favourite, most underrated feature of the Quest. Theyre not amazing sounding unfortunately, and it would be awesome if they were better, but theyre just tucked away in the head strap so Ill take a little bit lower quality for not having to put on hot, sweaty headphones
The last big thing that I love about the Quest is the quality of the games. Now you might be like, Wait wait wait wait wait This is basically running a phone processor(its a Snapdragon 835), what do you mean you like the quality of the games? You said you come from high-end PC-based VR running GTX1080s?
I understand the skepticism but the amazing thing about the Quest is that I ultimately didnt care about the quality of the games and thats the big thing here. If you are a hundred percent purist and need the highest quality games, as in youre that guy that will sacrifice frame rate for getting ultra settings then yeah this probably isnt the headset for you. As long as you set your expectations accordingly, again this is basically a phone running this headset, you have to understand that six degrees of freedom, 72 Hertz, and high resolution, something has to be sacrificed here.
Games like Sairento, which I really love, obviously takes a huge, noticeable hit in comparison to the regular game. They touted as having all new maps and stuff like but that is just because the Quest cant run the power of the old maps and it basically looks like Tony Hawk Pro Skater from 2000. Thats kind of what the the equivalent I would put that too. But I still dont care because Im jumping and flying around, Im doing backflips, Im jumping in slow motion, shooting people, I just dont care about the quality. The fact that it still runs well enough that its still immerses you is is truly forgivable.
And then theres games that because of the limited factor, kind of take that into account. Games like Rec Room which are super easy to port over and games like Journey of the Gods looks phenomenal. It is a very low-poly game but it totally works for this sort of atmosphere. Games like again SuperHot, Beat Saber, all these games that dont need high-end graphics run amazing on this headset.
Rambling thoughts aside, I really think that people really need to adjust their expectations when they come to the Oculus Quest. I really think that for the price it is such a great headset and the fact that you get six degrees of freedom and all of these games more than makes up for the fact that the quality is not quite as good.

It was a little after noon on March 26, and Naomi Campbell was working out in her living room in New York City.
Disco music on blast, she crushed a set of squats, guided by her personal trainer, Joe Holder, who had tailored the 40-minute workout. As she started a grueling set of flutter kicks, Campbell stopped and glared at her trainer. Oh my God, she said. He couldnt help but laugh.
Holder was not in the room, however. He was monitoring her on camera as she cycled through the circuit. Thousands of other people on Instagram Live were watching too and participating in what is normally a private workout between the supermodel and her trainer.
As America hunkers down during the coronavirus pandemic, free fitness workouts, many of them delightfully low-tech, are multiplying on social media platforms. They are being delivered by trainers and yogis and retired athletes. Holder calls these people the player-coaches for the real world.
While he and Campbell were doing their workout, two big-bearded trainers in Los Angeles were leading their clients through a similar session, as was an Olympic hopeful in the triple jump. An Ironman triathlete in Malibu led a flow yoga class. Those are just a few of the sessions available on social media each week.
Home workout posts on Instagram feeds and stories in the United States increased over fivefold on March 18 compared with a few days prior, a Facebook company spokeswoman said, which was around the time governors in some states began imploring people to stay home. (California was the first to order all residents to stay home, effective March 19.)
Facebook Live has thousands of options, as well. Nike has made its premium content free through mid-June, and Chris Hemsworth, the actor, recently made his Centr app free for six weeks, and as a result, views of workouts, articles and recipes have nearly quadrupled.
Even lesser-known trainers and studios are going live and finding an audience. Nic Knerr, 36, and Scott Forrester, 29, teach high-intensity interval training classes at Circuit Works in Santa Monica, Calif., where theyve cultivated a devoted client base thanks to their James Harden beards, goofy humor and upbeat attitudes. That same flavor is now available, live, six days a week, on their new joint Instagram feed (@homewerkbnc). They are averaging 10 to 15 students per class.
Tilita Lutterloh (@iamtilita), 39, coaches a handful of students through group workouts from her living room in Leimert Park in Los Angeles. Lutterloh was hoping to qualify for the Olympics in the triple jump and makes her living as a fitness coach and nutritionist. With the Olympics postponed, she offers classes three times a week, attended by a half-dozen students. A triathlete, ultradistance runner and longtime yoga instructor, Ted McDonald (@teddymcdonald), 49, teaches dozens of yoga students on Instagram and Facebook Live.
Video fitness instruction is nothing new, but often what makes this current content so appealing are the low production values and an intimate feeling of being in the instructors living room or backyard.
The equipment can be just as DIY. On a recent morning, Knerr and Forrester had students doing triceps dips off the end of a chair. Lutterloh demonstrated toe taps on an ottoman, and Holder picked up a vase of flowers to demonstrate cross-body chops and presses to Campbell and her followers.
Although much of the content is free, most fitness trainers, the heart and soul of a nearly $100 billion global fitness industry, are self-employed and could face hard times with an extended stay-at-home period.
Gin Dietz, a personal trainer based in Silicon Valley, estimates that she has lost 80 percent of her income. Like Dietz, Pixie Acia (@purposefulpixie), a SoulCycle instructor in Southern California, is used to relying on multiple streams of income, but the pandemic has cut them off.
In one second you go from crushing it, Acia said, to having all the rugs pulled from underneath you.
Its too soon to assess the impact on the industry, but ClassPass, an app that allows users to book classes at over 30,000 gyms and studios in 30 countries, lost 96 percent of its revenue in two weeks. Among the two dozen fitness and yoga instructors and gym and studio owners interviewed for this article, only three were well positioned to deal with an extended loss of income. (ClassPass is offering video classes on its app, too, by the way.)
Its definitely scary times, Forrester said. He has a wedding to pay for this summer, if thats not canceled, too.
Knerr signed up for unemployment immediately after the stay-at-home order was issued in Los Angeles County, though it wont be enough to cover his rent. By the time Forrester attempted to sign up, Californias online unemployment enrollment system had crashed from intense demand. He eventually enrolled, and although his landlord has signaled a willingness to delay rent payments, he has student loans and credit card debt. If this lasts a month, I feel we will be fine, he said. But if it lasts longer than that, its like, how do we survive?
Yet despite, or perhaps because of, the challenges they face, fitness professionals are adapting. Many are using video social media for the first time to reach existing clients and a new audience, and some ask for donations at the beginning and end of the classes they offer.
Just because everything is canceled doesnt mean your life is canceled, Lutterloh said. Its not about looking for the out, its about looking for what works.
As Holder put it: Moving the body and physical fitness get your blood flowing to help your lymph system, and that creates a beneficial response in your immune system. But youre also disengaging from an anxious state, and that anxiety has a huge impact on mental health and your immune system.
While Campbell, a celebrity for decades, has 8.7 million Instagram followers, Holder has 107,000. After playing football at the University of Pennsylvania, he worked for a nutrition start-up and moonlighted at a boutique gym training clients.
In 2015, he signed with Nike to become one of its master trainers who film workouts delivered to subscribers on the Nike Training Club app, but he never stopped training private clients. In 2017, Campbell became a regular. Given their travel schedules, the sessions are often held remotely.
On March 17, Campbell went live on her Instagram feed while she and Holder were working out on FaceTime. Since then, Holder estimated, more than 100,000 people have tuned in to their workouts. Its cool to see, he said, adding that he would keep providing the workouts online for free.
