Best home fitness apps – Android Authority

It turns out that home fitness is rather more challenging than many of us bargained for when lockdown started. This is partly down to the lack of equipment many of us have in our homes: if you dont have a huge pile of weight plates and a power cage, you cant very easily squat 120kg!

But it also comes down to motivation and guidance. Theres no one to encourage you to do that one more rep when youre at home. No one to remind you to clench your butt cheeks!

Fortunately, that latter issue is something we can address (the lack of guidance, not the butt cheeks). This is where home fitness streaming services come in. These are services that provide you with on-demand content to help walk you through a range of workouts, ranging from yoga, to HIIT, to boxercise, to calisthenics.

Also read: Best home gym equipment: keep your gainz despite the coronavirus

In this post, were going to take a look at the very best home fitness streaming services, so that you can keep off the pounds and tone up your butt (Im not obsessed).

Below, youll find our list of the best home fitness apps and streaming services. This list should cover something for everyone: from yogis, to busy parents, to serious lifters and calisthenics athletes. Be sure to let us know your favorites in the comments below!

Fitt has a great interface and offers a wide range of classes for you to try out from home. The tagline tells you that you will be training with the best, which it aims to deliver on by relying on experienced coaches and trainers.

Another great feature is the heart rate monitor integration. This lets users track their effort during sessions, which is then used to monitor progress and even highlight PBs!

Basic membership is free, but there are premium options for those that want access to everything the app has to offer.

A lot of home fitness streaming services focus on toning up and burning calories. Thats fine, but its not right for everyone and theres considerably less out there for those serious about building muscle.

Bodybuilding.com offers a solution with its Bodyfit platform. This costs $12.99 for the Elite membership or $3.99 for the Plus membership. Either way, youll be gaining access to a wide variety of workouts and how-to videos (over 3,500), covering everything from running, to HIIT, to actual weightlifting and bodybuilding.

Theres an app too, of course. The only limitation is that there is some reading to do when it comes to creating the actual workout plans these arent generally provided in digestible follow-along video format.

GymCube provides over 700 home workouts, as well as regular live sessions. These workouts can also be filtered based on difficulty, muscle group, trainer, and much more. All those things make this a great resource for those looking for home fitness classes. Theres also a useful 7-day Kick Start program that determine goals and fitness levels upon starting.

That said, while 700 might sound like a lot of programs, thats only a few per category. The selection for dumbbell workouts is limited to just four for instance, and there arent tons for workouts for abs. Most of the best content also requires a membership, which isnt cheap.

Still, with nutritional information and more, this will prove a great resource for the right person.

The ThenX app comes from the creators of the Official ThenX YouTube channel. For those unfamiliar, this is a channel dedicated to calisthenics and bodyweight fitness. Its also fairly advanced in many cases, with tutorials for moves like the planche and handstand press.

That said, there is plenty here for beginners too: including videos on beginner bodyweight training from home, HIIT fat-burning workouts, and more. A lot of this content can be accessed completely for free (especially since a lot of it simply links to YouTube) but youll need to pay for the more advanced lessons.

As is true of the channel as a whole, this app benefits from a fantastic presentation and video editing, which really helps to put you in the zone when training!

The Nike+ Run Club app gives you access to over 50 guided runs. Many of these are guided by top trainers, such as Eloid Kipchoge. They work well with a treadmill, which means they can be used from home too. The best part? Its free!

Booya fitness clearly has big ambition: acting as a go-between for fitness studios hoping to reach thousands of home users. Theres already a lot of variety here, ranging from HIIT sessions, to strength conditioning, to yoga.

The platform costs $9.99 per month, or $99.99 billed yearly. For that, youll get access to all studio classes but youll still need to pay extra for the more comprehensive workout plans.

Yoga seems to be a great fit for home fitness apps, and there are plenty of platforms out there for those that want to get their stretch on. The problem is that in many cases, these dont have much to offer more experienced yogis.

OMstars aims to cater to that audience with more advanced classes, while still being welcoming to beginners. There are tons of videos available, along with live classes, and challenges. Theres also a 14-day free trial, so you can see if you like it before spending any cash.

Sign up for OMstars

FitOn provides access to a bunch of group fitness classes, ranging from cardio and dance classes, to strength and mobility. As with many of the options on this list, youll be guided by a number of celebrity trainers, such as Katie Dunlop, and Jacquelyn Umof (no, I dont know who they are either), and you can also find nutrition and wellness advice. There are also social features here, which can provide that much-needed gym camaraderie usually absent from home fitness!

The good news is the app recently became free, so theres no reason not to give it a try!

It bears mentioning that YouTube is probably the very best home fitness streaming app by just about every measure.

YouTube is filled to the brim with follow-along home workouts. Many fitness coaches like Joe Wix are now providing live sessions that you can tune in with, and all of that content can be accessed for free.

You already have access to everything you could possibly need

There are kettlebell routines, dumbbell routines, bodyweight programs, yoga classes, workouts for kids, guided meditations every aspect of fitness is covered. So while some people might benefit from the commitment and structure they get from an app or home fitness streaming service, the truth is that you already have access to everything you could possibly need!

ClubReady and Cross River Bank Partner to Provide Assistance to Fitness Studios in Response to COVID-19 Pandemic – PRNewswire

ST. LOUIS, April 13, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --ClubReady, the leading provider of full-suite studio fitness and wellness club management software, and Cross River Bank, a leading innovator and provider of banking services for technology companies, today announced a new partnership to offer quick access to Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans to its fitness studio customers. This program offers a fully integrated online application, underwriting approval and funding process that is 100% electronically enabled, expediting the fund flow from the bank to the studio, improving the chance of getting approved before the funds are depleted.

The $94 billion fitness industry has taken a brutal hit in a matter of weeks. Across the United States, virtually all studios have been mandated to close their doors. While some studios are pivoting to live-streaming classes, the financial impact is still palpable.

"This has been a devastating period for so many businesses, especially those in the fitness industry,"says Darol Lain, ClubReady President. "We know this is a temporary setback, and we want to partner with our customers to provide them with every resource possible to weather this storm and reopen with the financial and emotional momentum needed to be successful."

Cross River Bank recognizes the importance of community service and providing financial resources to consumers in need, whether that be responsible access to credit, innovative financial solutions or financial literacy programming and support.

"Cross River was founded in the wake of the great recession with a singular focus on community service, and we continue to be deeply committed to supporting companies in times of need," said Gilles Gade, Founder, President, and CEO of Cross River.

The PPP loan application process can be cumbersome and overwhelming for many small business owners who don't have access to sophisticated legal and financial resources, said Randy Eckels, the CEO of ClubReady parent Clubessential Holdings. Eckels is also the owner of a Goddard School franchise and relates to what many of these ClubReady customers are experiencing.

"Having just completed the Paycheck Protection Program application process this past weekend for our small business, what impresses me about the Cross River online application is the robust user experience that guides the small business owner seamlessly through every step of the process,"said Eckels."Cross River has provided a very valuable tool for small business owners to accelerate the application, underwriting and fast funding of approved SBA PPP loans at a time when these critical funds can make the most difference."

Information about this program and partnership, including the link to the online application, FAQs, and additional SBA resources can be found here on the ClubReady Quickstart PPP Resource Center.

Fitness test battery designed to help players stay fit at home – The News International

Fitness test battery designed to help players stay fit at home

KARACHI: Yasir Malik, Pakistan Cricket Teams Strength and Conditioning Coach, has said that a fitness test battery had been designed to help players stay fit while confined in their homes due to lockdown amid coronavirus pandemic.

We wanted to run at least six tests this year. We have conducted four. The dates for the fifth were March 23 and 24 but due to quarantine period we couldnt conduct it on time, Yasir said.

Theres uncertainty about when things would become normal again. Therefore, we have to bring such a battery, which can gauge fitness of players and also help them achieve fitness goals with limited resources like gym equipment, he said.

Malik said they have tried to formulate a new battery that is close to the previous battery and gives similar results. Our effort is to make sure that our players stay fit and ready for whenever the cricket action begins, he added.

App Review: A Day In The Life Of Chris Hemsworth’s Fitness App – Women Love Tech

During this hectic period of confinement, as a way of not completely losing my mind, I thought Id lay out a workout plan that would get me moving every single day. Since I cant train like I usually do, I needed something to substitute my workouts because otherwise its just eating and no moving (and we all know how that pans out). After two weeks of running the same route, increasing the distance each time, I decided it was time to switch things up a little by trialling Chris Hemsworths fitness app, Centr, for both workouts and eating plans.

And yes, it is Centr as opposed to Centre.

The beginning

When you first open the app, users will be prompted to add in details about yourself and your goals including your height, weight, sex and whether youre looking to lose weight, tone yourself or gain muscle. All of this will determine your workouts and your suggested meals.

For any given day, users will be given an assortment of activities and meals for you to follow along with. Youll get ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner with snacks on the side. Youll also be given some workouts (sometimes multiple workouts) and even wellness and calming activities like meditation and tips on how to deal with anxiety.

This is how a day in the life of using Centr looks like:

Pre-breakfast meditation

Start your day with a relaxing and soothing meditation routine with this kid-friendly twist on the traditional Loving-Kindness meditation. This short 8-minute routine helps to increase compassion and connection, while reducing stress and negativity.

Breakfast

Chilli mushroom and eggs toast

Prep: 5 mins, cook: 5 mins

Serves: 1

Ingredients

Instructions

Bring a small saucepan of water to the boil, reduce to a gentle simmer and add vinegar. Stir in a circular motion to create a vortex, and gently slide eggs into the water and cook for 4 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon, pat dry.

Heat oil in a non-stick frypan. Add spinach, garlic, mushrooms, chilli flakes, parsley, salt and pepper. Saute for 2-3 minutes or until tender.

Assemble mushrooms on toast and top with parmesan and eggs.

Nutritional information

Energy (kJ) 2671, Energy (cals) 638, Protein 37.2g, Fat 34.1g, Sat. Fat 10.7g, Carbs 42.6g, Sugar 1.9g, Fiber 8g

Post-breakfast workout

Boxing: Rock N Roll

This workout is an intense full-body workout with a warm-up, six rounds of work and a cool-down. The main exercises will be jump-roping and boxing.

Centr gives you guided videos for the workouts so that you can join along and follow all the right movements.

Lunch

For today, Ive been told to eat Leftovers. If you dont have any, the app gives you some tips on a complete DIY lunch including:

Workout #2

For this particular day, Ive been given a bonus workout called Do the Groundwork by Chris Hemsworth trainer for Thor, Da Rulk. This 10-minute full-body workout focuses on ground movement and definitely works your socks off.

In the app, users can switch between levels of difficulty and can choose to start with images or video.

Dinner

One-pan salmon tacos with braised greens

Prep: 5 mins, cook: 10 mins

Serves 2

Ingredients:

Avocado crema

Instructions:

Preheat oven to lowest setting. Place tortillas on a baking sheetand into the oven to warm. Alternatively, warm them over the gas hob for a few seconds both sides just before serving.

To prepare crema, combine all ingredients in a small blender or food processor, or combine by hand until you have a smooth pure, and adjust seasoning. Set aside.

Season salmon fillets on both sides with salt and pepper.

Heat oil in a frypan over medium-high heat, add garlic and let sizzle until golden. Immediately place salmoninto the skilletand sear for 3-4 minutes or until it easily releases from the pan. Flip over, turn heat to very low, and cook for another 3 minutes. Remove salmon from the pan.

In the same panover low heat, add greens and cabbage and cook for 2-3 minutes or until slightly wilted. Move to one side in the panskillet.

Lightly shred the salmon with two forks and return to panskillet to heat through. Remove from heat. Top warmed tortillas with salmon, greens and cabbage. Drizzle crema and sprinkle with coriander. Add a squeeze of lime to finish.

How to manage with anxiety as a family

This end of the day wellness activity is one to talk through with the whole family. Titled How to manage anxiety as a family, the Centr team has put together a few tips on how to overcome this particularly stressful time. Here are the tips they gave:

Additions

This is how a day with the Centr app is more or less structured, but keep in mind that throughout the day there will be snacking, in fact, its recommended. When youre in the app, you can check out a list of snacks ranging from everyday snacks, pre- and post-workout snacks, and the very necessary treats.

Verdict

Chris Hemsworths Centr app is not only great for its limit-pushing workouts but also for its meal-planning that can seriously help you achieve your goals if stuck by. As they say, abs are made in the kitchen, so Centr is a great companion for all sides of fitness.

What Acts of Kindness Have You Heard About or Participated In During Coronavirus? – The New York Times

Find all of our Student Opinion questions here.

In The Science of Helping Out Tara Parker-Pope argues, During a crisis, the people who cope best are those who help others. Does that concept resonate with you? Have you ever received any personal benefits by helping others?

Her article begins:

At a time when we are all experiencing an extraordinary level of stress, science offers a simple and effective way to bolster our own emotional health.

To help yourself, start by helping others.

Much of the scientific research on resilience which is our ability to bounce back from adversity has shown that having a sense of purpose, and giving support to others, has a significant impact on our well-being.

There is a lot of evidence that one of the best anti-anxiety medications available is generosity, said Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist at Wharton and author of Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success. The great thing about showing up for other people is that it doesnt have to cost a whole lot or anything at all, and it ends up being beneficial to the giver.

The article continues:

The challenge many of us are facing today is how to give support from a distance. Rules that require us to be physically apart during the pandemic mean that our traditional ways of volunteering in person are no longer possible. The good news is that the type of support that can be helpful to both giver and receiver can be given in a variety of small and big ways. It can include giving money or time to a cause. Or it can be as simple as a phone call, giving advice or just lending a listening ear.

In fact, the act of giving advice has been shown to be more beneficial than receiving it. In a series of studies of 2,274 people, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago found that after middle-school students mentored younger students about studying, they ended up spending more time on their own homework. Overweight people who counseled others on weight loss were more motivated to lose weight themselves.

During the current coronavirus crisis, have you heard about any acts of generosity?

Below are excerpts from three Times articles reporting on how people have tried to help out in their communities.

In This Brooklyn Landlord Just Canceled Rent for Hundreds of Tenants, Matthew Haag writes about Mario Salerno, an owner of 18 apartment buildings, who said he did not want renters to stress about their payment during the coronavirus pandemic":

He is likely forgoing hundreds of thousands of dollars in income by canceling April rent.

His only interest, he said, was in alleviating stress for his renters, even those who were still employed and now working from home.

My concern is everyones health, said Mr. Salerno, 59, whose rent gesture was first reported by the local news site Greenpointers.com. I told them just to look out for your neighbor and make sure that everyone has food on their table.

In He Beat Coronavirus. Now His Blood May Help Save Lives. Tracey Tully writes about Benjamin C. Planer, a New Jersey doctor who, upon recovering from the coronavirus, was found to have high levels of virus antibodies in his blood, which researchers at Hackensack University Medical Center plan to use to treat other patients:

At Hackensack, Dr. Planer, 58, has become known as the superdonor.

He and his family live in Teaneck, N.J., the hardest-hit town in the states hardest-hit county amid the outbreak. He, his wife and their 17-year-old son contracted the virus, and they all recovered after several days of experiencing relatively minor symptoms.

When his hospital asked for volunteers for a study of an emerging Covid-19 therapy, Dr. Planer was among the first to sign up. His blood carries an especially valuable quantity of antibodies, Dr. Michele Donato, the chief of stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy at John Theurer Cancer Center, part of Hackensack University Medical Center, said.

My body obviously had it, Dr. Planer said in an interview. My body responded. My immunity worked. And I hear that I made a lot of antibodies. I was very happy to hear that and very happy to share.

In In Praise of Quarantine Clapping, Amanda Hess chronicles her experiences with the communal applause that breaks out in her neighborhood every night for workers who put themselves at risk during the crisis:

Every night at 7, my Brooklyn neighborhood comes to life with the calculated whimsy of a cuckoo clock. It starts with a single neighbor clapping. Soon dozens more join in, throwing open their front doors or hanging from their windows to put their hands together and say wooooo. Perhaps 20 seconds into the proceedings, a man emerges from the garden apartment across from me, banging a pot with a spoon, and a woman appears on the stoop of the house next door, her spaniel barking helpfully at her side. Often there is a special guest: On a recent evening, a guy motored by on a delivery bike, a whistle blaring from between his lips. Its all over within five minutes.

The Clapping first spread through New York City on a Friday night in late March. Following similar gestures in Italy, India and Spain, the New York iteration was seeded by a strategic marketing firm and circulated over social media to thank workers on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak. It was originally presented as a one-off event, and after that, residents were asked to repeat it once a week. But now we do it every single night.

The Clapping has surely been heard by doctors and nurses and E.M.T.s, by UPS workers and Instacart delivery people and the many other New Yorkers who are putting themselves at risk to protect their city. I live just a couple of blocks from the choked I.C.U. of the Brooklyn Hospital Center, and on Tuesday, firefighters lined up right outside the center to cheer the staff on.

But the more the ritual is repeated, the more it feels as if its for the rest of us, too. We used to go out to concerts or movies or plays and clap for the performances. Now the clapping is the performance. It is our regularly scheduled programming, live and in person when basically nothing else is.

Students, read one or more of the articles in their entirety, then tell us:

What acts of generosity have you heard about in your community or anywhere else in which someone has helped others during the coronavirus crisis? Who was on the receiving end of those acts? How do you think the person or people in the helping role also may have been helped by the experience?

What experiences have you had in your life with volunteering, donating or otherwise assisting others? Do you think the act of giving was beneficial to you in any way? If so, how?

Do you think there is truth in the adage its better to give than to receive? Explain.

What might someone who claps every night for workers at a nearby hospital have in common with a landlord who tells his tenants he wont collect their rent or a blood donor who donates plasma to try to help coronavirus victims?

The first article above mentions that while volunteering is difficult to do right now because of social distancing measures, you can still feel good by doing something as simple as a phone call, giving advice or just lending a listening ear. Have you done anything, no matter how small, to help others during the pandemic that also made you feel good? Explain.

Students 13 and older are invited to comment. All comments are moderated by the Learning Network staff, but please keep in mind that once your comment is accepted, it will be made public.

Coffee is not only delicious but is a great way to kick-start your day. It boosts your mood, make you more focused and keep your energised throughout the day. The famous beverage has numerous benefits, but at the same time, it is also criticised for its ill effects on health.

In general, coffee is also good for people trying to lose weight. But here we are referring to black coffee, not the regular one with milk and sugar. Black coffee is recommended in numerous diets for weight loss. In this article, we will discuss another great concoction, which is considered great for weight loss. It's coffee and lemon.

Both coffee and lemon are considered excellent for weight loss. But until now you might have used them individually. Most people drink a mixture of lemon and coffee, believing that it can accelerate the weight loss process.

The Struggle of Weight Loss Is Real. Companionship Helps. – The New York Times

After some shopping around, Meltzer finds a meeting in Park Slope that she likes. While she appreciates the democratic, accessible nature of the program she, at times, finds the earnestness off-putting, and bonds with Sadie, a wife and mother who shares her tendency toward sarcasm. (That is NOT a bagel, hisses Sadie when presented with a weird agglomeration of ingredients self-rising flour and Greek yogurt, painted with an egg wash and topped with Everything Bagel seasoning that, when shaped into a circle and baked, the company swears will pass.) Yet she hangs in, because even though Weight Watchers is the dad joke of diet programs corny, broad it seems sane and accessible compared with the other options she explores, like a spartan, wildly overpriced camp, and a super-fancy wellness cruise in the Andaman Sea in Thailand that appears to cater to the already-thin and fabulous. And Weight Watchers has been scrambling to get with the times in fact, in light of the anti-diet diet craze (as disingenuous as it may be), the company has rebranded itself as WW. The words weight and weight loss are no longer front and center.

At times, Meltzers writing evokes the sadness and anger of Judith Moores 2005 memoir Fat Girl, particularly on themes of dating, desire and visibility. Other times, it feels as if shes juggling too many things at once anecdotes, statistics, trends, cultural reportage, personal ruminations and historical shifts. (A similar overexerted feeling clouded Kim Chernins The Obsession. To be fair, the myriad forces at play around the subject of weight are a lot to balance.) But the occasional compressed-in-haste spots are offset by an abundance of shrewd observations, about matters like the current trend of clean eating as a flimsy mask for orthorexia, and dishy disclosures, as when Meltzer recalls checking out the size tag on Emily Blunts jeans when she was left alone in a dressing room while profiling the sylphlike star.

Meltzer has created a singular companionate text for those who know the agony of frustration surrounding weight as an issue, both personal and political. People women, especially who ping-pong around the weight spectrum will feel less alone when they read it. As she wraps up her yearlong venture with Weight Watchers (er, WW), she evaluates what progress means, not just corporeally, but holistically. What is it that we really want from weight loss? That question is more radical than it appears.

Of course I want to lose weight, but at what cost? Meltzer writes. What I really want is to stop existing in a world where food is either punishment or reward. I couldnt disappear I wouldnt and, instead, I was resolutely living in the present, a place where, even if Im having a good day and concentrating on my wins, I was going to be reminded of my weight. There would always be someone who is all too willing to give me a whole bunch of advice I couldnt use and did not want. Could I find a way to exist in that world and be happy?

How searching, how beautiful. How real.

Meltzer concludes that Jean, like her, was a woman of appetite. Theyve both greeted the world as women doing the best they can to thrive in the body, and the cultural context, into which they were born. In these ways, they are perfect, and perfectly suited for each other, exactly as is. Nidetch may be long gone, but Meltzer carries on her legacy of putting a public face on the challenge of weight management. Acerbic, culturally astute and genuine, she makes exquisite company in the struggle, and that is no small thing.

How the diet industry uses and misuses knowledge of hunger and satiety – The Independent

There are plenty of adverts and websites that promise to share secrets on how to suppress appetite, or which foods will keep hunger at bay. Protein drinks are frequently sold with the promise of meeting these expectations.

Foods are often developed with the aim of increasing satiety or satiation, but what exactly is meant by these terms? Appetite is our desire to eat. And while hunger is a cue from our body, appetite is a cue from our brain. Satiety and satiation are often used interchangeably in relation to appetite but actually have different meanings.

Satiation is the process that leads us to stop eating, whereas satiety is the feeling of fullness that persists after eating. The latter has thepotential tosuppressfurther energy intake until hunger returns. In simple terms, what makes us put down our knife and fork is satiation, and what keeps us from starting our next snack or meal is satiety.

Sharing the full story, not just the headlines

Despite sophisticated mechanisms in the body to control food intake, people often still eat when they feel satiated or resist eating when hungry. There are many other factors that influence eating behaviour as well as the bodys satiety signals, such as portion size, tastiness and emotional state.

Worldwide data reveals that around 42 per centof adults have tried to lose weight. In terms of New Years resolutions, 44 per centof Britons set weight loss as their goal for 2020. This inevitably opens the floodgates for fad dieting and the marketing of appetite-suppressing products.

Currently, there is limited evidence to support the effect of satiating foods in obtaining a healthy body weight. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) does not consider a reduction in appetite to be a beneficial physiological effect in maintaining healthy weight and no health claims can be made or placed on food products with regards to appetite.

But many food and supplement brands still appear to advertise these benefits, regardless of health claim regulations particularly outside the EU. A prime example is the Flat Tummy Cos appetite-suppressing lollipops which claim to contain Satiereal, a clinically proven safe active ingredient extracted from natural plants.

The product is marketed to maximise satiety but in terms of evidence, there is no robust science to support these claims. This is because there is insufficient evidence characterising appetite and weight, with most studies focusing on one or two days effects. But other claims can be made on foods such as high in fibre or high in protein. These credentials are recognised by consumers as contributing to satiety and can be used without the need for an appetite health claim.

The combination of flexible and vegetarian. This diet is all about adding things to your diet, not taking them away. By adding more tofu, beans, fruits, veggies, eggs, whole grains and seeds to your diet you should feel full on fewer calories.

Ranked at number one, the DASH diet was developed to prevent and lower high blood pressure by reducing salt intake.

Focuses on everything you were told to eat as a child: whole grains, fruit and vegetables.

Eat as the Mediterranean people do: A diet low in red meat, sugar and saturated fats but high in produce and nuts. And lots of olives.

Works with a points system where healthy foods have fewer points. Group meetings offer emotional support and encouragement, meaning it has been a successful program since 1963.

Works on the idea that people eat roughly the same amount every day, regardless of the calories. So this diet is all about the approach to eating rather than a structured diet. Research from consumer surveys suggest that foods with enhanced satiety are bought not just for weight control but for managing hunger. One of the main reasons people stop dieting is because of hunger or being deprived of their favourite foods. Foods that suppress hunger may not cause people to lose weight but may help them adhere to their diet, which consequently will help them with weight loss.

A lot of focus goes into decreasing appetite, but appetite research is not only concerned with reducing food intake and making people feel fuller. In fact, often the opposite is true. For instance, many older people report having diminished appetite for a variety of reasons.

No hype, just the advice and analysis you need

These may include physical factors such as slower emptying of food from the stomach, and social factors such as bereavement, depression or isolation. Reduced physical function (which can make food preparation difficult), sight, smell and taste impairments, medication and dental problems can all influence appetite.

The elderly usually eat less than younger people. They experience fewer hunger pangs and satiation at meals is faster. Together these factors can result in a reduction in appetite and a reduced desire to buy and prepare food, which affects their nutritional health. In this group, foods that promote appetite and encourage increased food intake are required to prevent malnutrition.

Another challenge for older people is that the type of foods they require need to be good sources of protein. While it isconsidered to be the most satiating nutrient, proteincan increase mouth drying and, if it is meat-based, may require longer chewing. Much is still unknown about appetite responses in older people, and more research is needed to explore how appetite can be increased in this population.

At present, there is convincing evidence for the short-term satiating effects of some foods and nutrients, but much less evidence on the longer-term impact of these foods on weight control. More studies specifically designed to demonstrate a causal link, if any, between appetite and weight control are needed.

Research which focuses on helping those who have reduced appetite is also crucial, given our growing ageing population and risks associated with malnutrition.
