GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Brandon Morrison used to spend about 30 hours per week in the gym lifting weights and training his clients as a fitness and nutrition coach.
That was before Michigans response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic closed his office and nearly put him out of work. Now the former amateur strongman is hoping his newfound passion -- baking -- can not only stop the financial bleeding, but maybe even open a new career path.
My life has changed in almost every way," said Morrison, who moved from Grand Rapids to Hesperia earlier this year.
Ive been the bread winner, ironically, for the last two years while my wife has been in nursing school. We depended on that coaching income to make ends meet. Its really hard to know what life will be like after this but Id love to be the bread man in this town."
Morrison, 32, is still pretty new to baking. But he said he goes through phases of obsessions" where he studies and spends hour upon hour consumed by the desire to know more about a given topic.
Right now, its baking.
The Seattle native made his first bread sale on March 10. Three weeks later, he had pushed his home production capacity to 16 loaves of bread, 65 biscuits and 96 cookies in one day.
Working with one oven and no mixer, he has begun filling orders and making deliveries to nearby cities like Grand Rapids and Muskegon. He has aspirations of opening a bread truck, but time will tell if his new brand -- Forest and Flame -- can take off.
Forest and Flame encompasses everything from nature to the stove top and everything in between, Morrison said. Following the concept of closing the loop, I want to eventually make my own wheat, get my own cow, feed the cow scraps of food I create on the land and sort of create my own ecosystem as much as I can.
I wanted to get big
Before baking, Morrisons obsession was fitness.
In college he started getting into CrossFit -- a strength and conditioning type of exercise that consists of aerobics, calisthenics and Olympic weightlifting. Then he transitioned to more heavyweight lifting.
I remember sitting in a nutrition class in college and looking at photos of old-time strongmen," Morrison said. They were all huge, with big beards. I wanted to look like them. That moment stands out to me on my timeline."
The 6-foot-5, 165-pound Morrison bulked up. He increased his diet, including drinking a gallon of milk a day. As a result, his weight climbed to 287 pounds.
Over the next six years, his passions were powerlifting and strongman competitions, which include a variety of strength events like vehicle pulls, tire flips and keg toss.
Morrison hired Alanna Casey, a three-time winner of the title Strongest Woman in the World, to be his coach. He took part in more than a dozen competitions, fairing best in atlas stones, farmer walks and deadlifts.
At its peak, his fitness brand, Lift Big Eat Big, had sponsored athletes and assistant coaches working with him. He sold apparel and fitness plans for his clients.
In addition to taking on the physical feats himself, he got into coaching along the way. He coached Olympic weightlifting at his alma mater, Seattle University, and has spent the last decade coaching strength and fitness in gyms and online.
You dont have to be a great athlete to be a great coach, he said. "I have a really good eye for small technique errors, combined with a compassionate way about correcting them.
While he says he might look like a drill sergeant with his size and grizzly beard, thats not the case.
Im really a quiet and reserved person," he said. Im into getting people to lift more weight in a way thats safe and so they can do it the rest of their lives.
Most recently, Morrison has coached clients at a gym in East Grand Rapids. He estimates that he had around 30 clients before the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown gyms across the state. Now hes seen most of his business wash up, at least temporarily.
He still offers at-home fitness programming. But with limited revenue there and his wife, Kara, finishing up nursing school, he needed to shift gears in an uncertain time.
Baking
Much like fitness coaching, baking requires careful timing, calculation and minor tweaks in technique to get the ideal end product. Both take time and energy to perfect.
In recent years, Morrison has grown more interested in experimenting in the kitchen. That too has evolved, from cooking to baking.
I never really baked much before this, he said. I go through these phases where I become obsessed with something. I get tunnel vision and Im all about it. For a while now its been baking.
Out of bed long before the sunrise, Morrison has found baking helps combat his very active brain and difficulty relaxing. Nowadays, he begins his process around 3 a.m., and with no cable television and limited internet on his Hesperia ranch, work in the kitchen consumes much of his day.
He likes to tweak recipes to take them to the next level." That means things like toasting his flour or browning his butter and running it through a smoker before baking his cookies.
I try to create more flavor with the same ingredients, he said. I love the chemistry of cooking and baking.
Forest and Flame offers bread (sourdough, white, wheat and rye), brown butter cookies and buttermilk biscuits. His bread sells for $10 a loaf, cookies are $15 for six, and biscuits are $12 for six.
Morrison hopes to begin growing food on his Hesperia ranch. His goal is to eventually bake with all of his own ingredients.

On CNBC's "Mad Money Lightning Round", Jim Cramer said Peloton Interactive Inc (NASDAQ: PTON) is very interesting because it's the ultimate stay-at-home stock. He's not sure if people are still going to buy it in case of recession, but at least it has a good thesis.
Solaredge Technologies Inc (NASDAQ: SEDG) is pretty dangerous so Cramer would not buy it.

Cramer likes Uber Technologies Inc (NYSE: UBER) as a long-term deal, but he thinks it needs a better balance sheet.
We're going into a recession where a lot of things won't be built, said Cramer. Nucor Corporation (NYSE: NUE) was upgraded Tuesday and it yields 4.2%. Cramer would be a buyer if it yields 5%.
Before the pandemic, Planet Fitness Inc (NYSE: PLNT) was one of the Cramer's favorite stocks. Now, there are a lot of bad things for business and Cramer wants to wait and see what happens.

Impeachment failed to remove him from office, but because of his callous mismanagement of the coronavirus crisis, he must not be allowed a second term. Be mindful, when you vote in November, that the Globe editorial board stated that this president has blood on his hands.
Ann Madigan

Editorials anti-Trump theme borders on hysteria
As someone whose great-grandmother (a German immigrant) died, along with her daughter, in the 1918 flu epidemic, and as a person who did not and would never vote for Donald Trump, I think the Globes anti-Trump theme has reached the point where it is not constructive and borders on hysteria, such as in Tuesdays editorial: Catastrophic decisions in the White House have doomed the worlds richest country to a season of untold suffering.
Complacency is a universal human trait. The United States has not experienced a global pandemic the likes of this in 100 years, and but for the initial coverup in Wuhan, China, by local officials there, there may not have been a global pandemic for another 100 years. Of course, no country would be fully prepared for such an unusual and unpredictable calamity. And many mistakes have been made on all sides.
As the Globe has pointed out, the states governors have enormous power in this kind of situation. The fine Democratic governor of Louisiana, for example, allowed Mardi Gras to go forward in New Orleans in February, with disastrous results.
I hope that the Globe will take a more balanced approach as it proceeds to examine this crisis.
Bill Hahn
Stoughton
Its a bipartisan failure, and its deep-seated
The editorial A president unfit for a pandemic does a thorough job of indicting Donald Trump for a colossal failure of leadership and calls for his defeat in November. Unmentioned is the effectiveness of the effort, over at least the last 40 years, to undermine trust in government, specifically through the continual and successful assault on adequate funding for a public health system robust enough to address the dangers of a 21st-century pandemic. This is but one example of the ways the bipartisan effort to undermine the ability of government to meet the fundamental social needs of working people leaves them so vulnerable at a time like this.
The pandemic lays bare the nature of these vulnerabilities and demands a spirited criticism of so-called Third Way neoliberal capitalism, spanning from Jimmy Carter to Trump, which has led to the increasing privatization of social goods and services. The social democratic safeguards offered by the Nordic model deserve serious consideration, not only because of their effectiveness in a time of pandemic, but also because they prioritize the lives of working people and democratize the power of capital in our social contract.

How to Proactively Manage Your Fitness Business During a Mandated COVID-19 Shutdown – Club Industry

If you operate a health club or studio in the United States, it's likely your facility has already been mandated to close due to the coronavirus pandemic. It's also likely you've had to make difficult decisions regarding your employees, membership and fitness offerings that will affect your business for the foreseeable future.
So, what's next?

In Club Industry's March 26 Master Class Series webinar, Honor Yoga CEO Maria Turco moderated a discussion between three expert panelists who shared numerous strategies for how you can further stabilize your business during this uncertain time.
The webinar panelistsAdam Siegelheim, shareholder at Stark & Stark Attorneys at Law; Lindsay Vastola, founder of VastPotential; and Paul Bosley, managing member at Business Finance Depotoutlined pragmatic, step-by-step actions that can be taken by almost any fitness business owner. These include negotiating with landlords, securing additional funding and communicating with your employees.
The free webinar is now available for on-demand viewing.
Seek Rent Relief
Siegelheim suggested first submitting a business interruption claim with your insurance provider. The vast majority of these claims are denied, but even a formal letter of denial can serve as meaningful leverage when negotiating with banks, landlords and government agencies, he said.
The first week of April 2020 is significant because it marks the first rent payment most fitness business owners will be required to make after the mandated closure of their facilities. Siegelheim encouraged business owners to seek the advice of legal counsel when preparing a rent payment strategy.
Most leases include a force majeure provision that acknowledges that unforeseeable circumstances could prevent one or both parties from fulfilling their end of the agreement. In many cases, force majeure suspends the terms of a lease but does not pardon the renter from still paying their landlord, Siegelheim said.
Siegelheim recommended approaching your landlord with a plan. Perhaps you offer to pay 50 percent of your base rent now and add the remainder to the end of your lease or divide the remainder between future payments.
Prioritize Internal and External Communication
During this time, simply communicating with your banks, landlords, members and employees is just as important as launching a virtual training program, for example,Vastola said. She emphasized the importance of managing employee-employer relations while everyone is away from brick-and-mortar facilities.
We need to look at how the workforce in the fitness industry may change, Vastola said. If you have a trainer that's been working for you, is he or she now streaming online their own workouts depending on their contract? Now they're going to see, Wow, I can do this online thing. I can do it on my own. Id encourage you to think ahead because, at the end of the day, whats happening right now is changing the consumers' expectations about how they receive fitness.
In the webinar, Vastola also outlined key distinctions between exempt and non-exempt employees as well as layoffs versus furloughs.
Whats hard in our profession is that we're altruists at our core, and we just want to help people, she said. We want to help our staff, our employees, our communities and our people. But at the end of the day, we're running a business, and compliance for the protection of our business so you can actually survive this and thrive beyond it is absolutely imperative.
Secure Additional Funding
Business owners should apply online for an Economic Injury Disaster Loan with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Bosley said. The application can be completed between one and two hours, but Bosley recommended applying during a slow time of day, such as 2 a.m., to avoid overuse issues that are affecting the website. He also suggested readying all of your businesss relevant paperwork in advance so that you dont have to step away while youre halfway through the application.
The idea is you have to show economic injury over the time the virus has impacted the economy, Bosley said of the loan application.
The loans offer up to $2 million and include a 3.75 percent interest rate for small businesses and a 2.75 percent interest rate for non-profits. They can be used to cover payroll, fixed debts, accounts payable and many other components of your business.

Growth Hormone Increases Immune Function in Immune Deficient and Aging Population – Gilmore Health News
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
The thymus is the principal organ of T cell production and Growth hormone is a potent regulator of thymic function.
Evidence suggests a two way correlation between the neuroendocrine system and immune system. It is well known that lymphoid organs such as the thymus, the spleen and peripheral blood generate growth hormone. GH receptors are found on distinct groups of lymphocytes.
GH encourages proliferation of T and B cells and synthesis of immunoglobulin. It also accelerates the evolution of myeloid progenitor cells while also modulating cytokine response.
Numerous evidence from Research has reported the bi-directional relationship between the Growth Hormone and the Immune System. In both in vivo and in vitro studies in animal and human studies, interactions have been evidenced in between growth hormone and the immune system.
With age, the thymus gland begins to atrophy. Aging related thymus atrophy results in increased incidence of autoimmune and infectious conditions in the human body.Parallel to the thymus gland shrinkage, a decline in the number of T-cells and immune factors like Interleukin 2 occurs.
As researchers debated the role of growth hormone in immunity and thymic function, a study was conducted to determine whether true thymic function can be induced in HIV infected adults by Growth Hormones. The study also aimed to confirm that such induction is actually driven by growth hormone. Additionally, the study planned to evaluate whether thymic function plays a role in sustaining the T cell compartment.
Participants: Twenty-four volunteers were enrolled in the 2 year study.
Methodology: All participants received 12 months of treatment with human growth hormone. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two study groups. Twelve participants (Group 1) received growth hormone during the first year of the study. Twelve participants (Group 2) were enrolled in an observational control group that crossed over to growth hormone treatment after 1 year. Each Study visit included physical exams, blood tests, CT scans, PET scans, and DEXA scans.
Conclusion: GH treatment was associated with increased circulating levels of IGF-1.
GH treatment resulted in significant radiographic changes in the thymus gland by therapy duration of 6 months, as well as sizeable increases in circulating naive T cells, signifying improved thymic function.
GH treatment is associated with increase in thymopoiesis and recovery in peripheral T cells. Many of the immune effects seem to be mediated by IGF-1, therefore it is possible that GH or IGF-1 also stimulates gains in T cell number by enhancing expansion of peripheral T cells synthesis.
In immunodeficient and aging population, HGH therapy may play a particularly important role in improving thymus gland function and as a result the ability of the immune system to fight viral, bacterial and fungal infections.

Fitness coach Jordan Syatt frequently tackles new diet challenges on his YouTube and Instagram. Previously, he lost weight while eating a McDonald's Bic Mac every day. Now, he documented how following the carnivore diet for 14 days affected his body. Syatt shared the results in a series of Instagram stories, which are pinned to his page.
As the name implies, the carnivore diet consists of meat and animal products, and Syatt ate plenty of fish, beef, and eggs. He weighed in at 154.8 pounds on the first day. The scale dropped to 151 pounds after five days.
Within 24 hours, he was struck with diarrhea, Syatt tells Men's Health.
"It burned. It was awful," he says. "You try to hold it and don't want to go through the painful process of cleanup."
The severity of his diarrhea became better after 10 days, he says.
When it came working out, Syatt says he had little motivation to hit the gym.
"My workouts were awful. I didn't have much energy at all," he says.
Additionally, Syatt's blood pressure increased within a few days of starting the plan. However, it returned to normal after about a week.
Admittedly, Syatt isn't a fan of the all-meat approachor any other restrictive diet. But he does say that eating meat prevented mindless snacking.
"I did not go to the fridge and open it up and say, 'What can I have?,'" Syatt explains. "If I'm not hungry enough to eat meat, then I'm just not hungry."
After 14 days, Syatt weighed 149 pounds and broke the diet with watermelon.
"Damn, carbs are life," he says in an Instagram story.

Noom shows theres science and plenty of help to aid in weight loss – BGR
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
Over the years, there have been plenty of fad diets that pop up and youll hear from a friend or two that you have to try it. Sure, some diets work for some people, but theres a lot more that goes into losing weight than just eating a particular type of food or slashing your food intake in general. Many people struggle with this and theres no shame in that. There are even more people who dont want to give up the foods they love altogether. With Noom, they arent here to tell you youre never allowed to eat your favorite sweets. They are focused on the bigger picture.
Noom is a program created for long-term results by teaching you better eating habits and changing your behaviors, not to tell you you cant have a piece of cake. Ive been using Noom for seven weeks now and have really been impressed by the experience. From the get-go, the process is very simple as you answer some initial questions about your eating habits, physical abilities, gender, and age. You even get to choose between a slow and fast dieting plan, in case you want to shed some weight quickly for a special occasion. You get to pick how long you want your plan to be and what you want your ultimate goals to be, whether you want to get fit or lose weight.
The day-to-day is very positive and reinforcing, as they use food science and psychology to better map out a weight loss plan for you. Nooms eating program is focused on caloric density, which boils down to which foods have higher nutrients to fill you up. The plan is broken down into three categories: green, yellow, or red foods. Green foods have the most nutrients and the least amount of calories to fill you up (like vegetables, fruits, whole grains), while yellow has more calories and fewer nutrients (like lean meats, legumes, and low-fat dairy). Red is the highest calorie foods with lower nutrients. The first thing that surprised me was foods that I didnt expect to be red were red, like cereal, but it makes sense because they arent overly filling.
Something that Ive found myself really doing more of is paying attention to serving size. I know thats a basic part of any weight loss plan, but its never something I did a lot of. Measuring out cups and tablespoons of ingredients helped me keep an eye on my caloric intake. Noom has you weigh yourself every morning and there are some wild swings day to day when it comes to weight, something I also never realized. Any time you eat anything, youre supposed to track it, which can feel like a chore, but it does help with mapping out your days eating. If you have some spare calories, you know you can fit dessert in later.
Each day has about 10 minutes or so of reading that helps explain healthy habits and how to change your overall behavior when it comes to eating. It comes in a checklist fashion, so once youve finished one, it moves you onto the next topic. But you can always revisit and even bookmark your favorite lessons. There are plenty of quizzes throughout the week as well, to make sure that youre doing the reading. While that may sound like homework, they are all informative and useful in your daily life.
There is support available to you throughout your time using Noom, as you are assigned a Goal Specialist right away who can talk through how the program is working for you. Your Goal Specialist will check in with you and answer questions you may have about the program, as well as continue to work with you through your plan. One thing that should be noted is that Goal Specialist arent really available to you 24/7, only during business hours, and they arent always the quickest at getting back to you. But after a few weeks of the program, you are placed into a support group with other Noom users and you can share whats been working for you and where you are struggling. There is a Group Coach who oversees the discussions and begins them each day. It can be a great place to see how other people are using the program and picking up helpful tips and tricks. Its there for positive reinforcement.
I found that tracking your food can be easy as well as difficult at times. You can scan the barcode of your food for it to come up in the food tracker but there have been numerous occasions where Ive scanned a barcode and Noom didnt have the food in their library. You can add the food to help Noom, but if you eat that food more than once in a few days, youll have to add it multiple times. But any recognized foods that you type in or scan will show up if its a green, yellow, or red food. Youll also be able to log your food in different measurements like tablespoons, cups, or ounces, or even handfuls for things like nuts or popcorn. If you are getting food from a restaurant, Noom does a good job of just having a general estimate of how much something like chicken marsala would register on the tracker, rather than breaking down each ingredient. You can also create custom dishes and save them, if they are going to be something you eat frequently, like a smoothie.
As the program progresses, Noom will also start offering exercises and activities you can do to help you stay fit. You can choose what kind of workout you want (cardio, weight training, etc.) and Noom will cater your workouts to your preference. Every day your steps will be tracked, made easier if you have the Noom app for your smartphone, as it will follow your literal footsteps. Being given different exercises is a nice perk, as many people dont want to have to pay for both a gym membership and a dieting program. Noom is offering a 14-day trial, which you can cancel at any time. If you want to keep using it after that, it is $59 a month or there are auto-recurring payments that you can opt-in for like an annual fee of $199.
While using Noom, Ive lost 17 pounds and am on my way to getting to my goals. Ive found that it has been helpful for me, especially when it comes to planning out my calories each day. It will not work for everyone, especially those who dont want to commit to keeping track of every meal of their life. But Ive seen improvements through my overall health and over 50 million users have as well. If youre looking for a new way to look at weight loss, Noom can be that fresh respective.

Could Intermittent Lockdown Save Us – and the Economy – From the Coronavirus? – Newswise
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
Newswise Think of dieting. You can fast for two months and lose weight, but you will probably die. Even if you survive, you will quickly gain weight again. Similarly, a two-month lockdown will suppress the coronavirus, but it will kill the economy. Lockdown will push hundreds of millions of people globally into unemployment and poverty. Many sectors of the economy will collapse. At the end of each lockdown, remaining patients will cause a resurge in the epidemic, forcing another lockdown.
This is the well-known yo-yo effect, with the number of coronavirus patients going up and down. At the same time, the global economy will be hit hard and hundreds of millions will go hungry. When the dust settles, more people will have died of hunger than of the coronavirus
Prof.Uri Alon and his graduate students Omer Karin andYael Korem-Kohanim, together with senior engineer Boaz Dudovich of Applied Materials, suggest, based on an epidemiological model they developed, a policy that effectively suppresses the coronavirus and, at the same time, allows sustainable, albeit reduced, economic activity. The model is based on intermittent lockdown: five days of lockdown and two days of work every week. In this way, the virus replication number (the number of people infected by each infectious person) drops below one the magic number that causes the epidemic to decline.
A four-day work/ten-day lockdown strategy is even better, allowing those infected at work to cease becoming infectious at home. Prof. Alon carefully suggests that, after several such cycles, the number of infected people will drop dramatically. The epidemic can thus be contained until sufficient testing, effective treatment, or a vaccine is developed, which will remove the need for a lockdown.
Intermittent lockdown may be the only viable option for countries that cant deploy sufficient testing in a timely manner. It allows millions to work two days a week, sustaining key economic sectors. People will hold a 40% position instead of being completely unemployed an economic and psychological game-changer.
Fixed workdays for everyone will allow workers and managers to plan ahead and stay productive. Our main message, says Prof. Alon, is to open up the discussion on lockdown and point out that a well-designed, smart lockdown strategy can suppress the epidemic and sustain the economy.

People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) appear to be at greater risk of developing lung cancer even if they have never smoked, according to a study.
COPD is the umbrella term for a group of diseases which prevents air from flowing through a person's airways and cause breathing-related problems, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In the early stages, symptoms may include a "nagging cough," shortness of breath, wheezing, and a tight chest. In more advanced cases, a person may have trouble catching their breath or talking and low oxygen levels in the blood may cause their lips and or fingernails may go blue or gray. They may also have problems with mental alertness, a very fast heartbeat, swollen feet and ankles, a lose weight The CDC states 15 million U.S. adults have the condition, with smoking being the leading cause.
To estimate rates of lung cancer in COPD patients who have never smoked, the authors of the paper published in the journal Thorax studied 338,548 people from South Korea from a nationally representative cohort aged between 40 to 84, with no history of lung cancer.
Lung cancer expert Dr.O-Jung Kwon of South Korea's Samsung Medical Center and colleagues followed up with the participants after seven years, on average, and found 1,834 had developed lung cancer. The respondents filled out a questionnaire where they noted whether they had "never" or "ever" smoked.
COPD patients who never smoked were found to have over 2.6 times the incidence of lung cancer compared with those without COPD who did not smoke. The researchers also found the risk of lung cancer in those who had never smoked was similar to those without COPD who smoked at some point in their lives.
According to research cited by the study authors, up to 39 percent of COPD patients have never smoked, and there is little evidence on the link between the condition and lung cancer.
The team acknowledged the study was limited because they did not know how severe COPD was in the participants, and didn't have information on environmental and occupational exposures or the severity of emphysema cases which could have put the participants at greater risk of lung cancer. COPD and lung cancer may have also have been misclassified in the data they used, the authors said.
The team concluded: "COPD was a strong independent risk factor for lung cancer incidence in never smokers. Furthermore, never smokers with COPD had a similar risk of lung cancer compared with ever smokers without COPD.
"Patients with COPD are at a high risk of lung cancer and future studies should evaluate whether COPD patients are candidates for lung cancer screening, irrespective of smoking status."
