Health experts explain why remaining active during COVID-19 is important – WHSV
(WDTV) As some people are adjusting to working from home during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, it brings a new set of challenges.
The comfort of being able to sit on the couch for hours at a time can be damaging physically and mentally.
"There are countless studies that show sitting down and being sedentary is not only nonproductive in the workplace but it's also just nonproductive in life in general," said WV Heart Association Executive Director Sarah Bolyard.
To find a way to stay active while sitting, the fitness expert and author of The Way In: 5 Winning Strategies to Lose Weight, Get Strong and Lift Your Life, Andrea Marcellus, says an easy ab exercise to help keep the core engaged is beneficial, and it can all be done from your favorite spot.
The exercises are safe for all ages. It is, however, best to modify according to the persons' ability and energy level.
"During this time it's very, very important to keep moving," Marcellus said. "Most importantly to boost your immunity," she said. "When you get your heart rate up, that will literally clean out your lungs and that will make you less susceptible to getting a cold flu or any kind of virus."
To keep your immune system strong, Bolyard said exercising is something that has to be done consistently.
"At the Heart Association, we encourage folks to get at lest 30 minutes of exercise a day for five days out of seven," she said.
Similar to work schedules and scheduling workouts, Marcellus suggested scheduling meals as well.
"Eat on schedule and stay as active as possible throughout the day," she said. "That's really the biggest tip."
Both Marcellus and the WV American Heart Association have tips to help with meals and staying active while home.
Marcellus has an app, called AND/life, that allows you to track and work on your health journey.
The WV American Association shares images to stay active and healthy on their Facebook page that you can download for free.

Make this easy, weight-loss-friendly breakfast in minutes, before you sit down to work in your home-office – Times Now
Make this easy, weight-loss-friendly breakfast in minutes, before you sit down to work in your home-office  |  Photo Credit: Getty Images
New Delhi: Due to the coronavirus pandemic, various countries, including India have gone under a lockdown, forcing all of us to work from home, except services that require people to be at their workplace. All of us seem to be struggling to be healthy, both physically and mentally. Some of us are also finding ourselves worried about how we will gain weight by the end of the pandemic, and all our weight loss goals will be left unachieved.
We know how important breakfast is to stay healthy and lose weight. Given we have a little too much time on our hands right now, eating a tasty, healthy breakfast is easier, since we do not have to go to office, but have to work from home. It is also important to eat right and make sure we are at our healthiest to reduce our risk of infection.
If you have run out of breakfast ideas, here is a simple, easy, and quick breakfast recipe that you can make, before you head out to your work office.
Pancakes are the perfect, exotic breakfast that everyone loves. However, traditionally, refined flour, butter, and various other unhealthy ingredients are used in making the pancakes. To make a healthier version, here is what you can do.
Add 2 cups of oats, one mashed banana, 1 cup of protein powder, and some skimmed milk into a blender. Add a pinch of baking powder to it. Blend the mix. This will make the pancake batter smoother. Pick a non-stick pan, and pour the batter on the pan, after turning the stove on. When little bubbles appear on the top surface of the pancake, flip it. Let it cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute on the other side, and take it off into a plate.
You can make as many of these as you wish, and serve them with maple syrup, honey, or chocolate syrup, depending on what you prefer.
The pancakes will be ready in just minutes, and will take even lesser time to eat. While you work from home and stay at home to keep yourself safe, make sure you eat healthily as well.

Here’s Why You’re Not Losing Weight From Intermittent Fasting – menshealth.com
Celebrities like Terry Crews have popularized intermittent fastingnot eating for lengths at a timeas a weight loss tool.
The practice doesn't guarantee you'll drop pounds, but it can help you consume fewer calorieswhich aides in weight loss.
As a refresher, there are different ways to fast, but people generally follow three common schedules: alternate-day fasting, whole-day fasting, or time-restricted fasting. Melanie Boehmer, R.D. at Lenox Hill Hospital, recommends starting with time-restricted fasting. The 16:8 format, meaning you only eat for eight hours in a day, is popular for this method.
It's always frustrating when the scale is stuck on the same numberdespite your best efforts. If you've been fasting and haven't seen results, it's a good time to analyze your strategy.
Here are some common reasons that explain why you're not losing weight from intermittent fasting.
You want to start a food journal before embarking on any kind of diet, says Melanie Boehmer, R.D. at Lenox Hill Hospital.
"It is helpful to monitor your intake to at least understand what your baseline is," Boehmer tells Men's Health.
Track everything you eat in a given week using FitDay.com, Lose It!, or MyFitnessPal.
Then, determine how many calories your body needs to maintain its current weight. This can be done using a formula or the body weight planner by the National Institute of Health.
From there, it's just a matter of comparing your actual intake to what you need. It goes without saying that you won't lose weightregardless of fastingif you consume too many calories.
If you're not losing weightdespite staying within your calorie needsthen it's time to look at serving sizes. It's common to miscalculate how much you're actually eating, which leads to consuming more calories than you think. This is particularly true with calorie-dense foods such as cheese.
For example, a one-ounce serving of full fat cheese equals about four dice. Use a food scaleor eyeball portions with this tutorialto more accurately calculate food intake.
If you've hit a weight loss plateau after losing a few pounds, Boehmer says you may be eating too few calories.
That's because our bodies adjust to whatever we throw at them, she says.
"If on average youre only taking in 1200 calories, which is something none of us should be doing on a regular basis, your body is going to learn to function on 1200 calories."
Reduce calories slowly and aim for more moderate weight loss, says Boehmer. She advises cutting enough calories to lose about a pound a week.
"When we talk about losing weight, the goal is always to lose as much weight eating thee most that you can so you dont create that metabolic inhibitor," she says.

Here's Why You're Not Losing Weight From Intermittent Fasting - menshealth.com
Is intermittent fasting the right choice? – We Are The Mighty
Intermittent fasting, as a specific protocol, is pretty new on the dieting scene, but there's a good chance you've heard of at least someone that's used it successfully.
Even though there are probably more than a hundred different ways to diet, maybe even a thousand, intermittent fasting is a bit different since it includes long periods of fasting or going without food.
While this makes fasting unique, it also means it's not the right idea for everyone.
If you're interested in trying this diet, I'll go over a few pros and cons that you should consider before jumping in.
Everyone wants more self control around fresh made baked goodness.
U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Webster Rison
I know it's ironic, but fasting consistently can help you better deal with hunger.
How often do you feel that you're close to the brink of death when you haven't eaten in a few hours? If you're like most people that eat three meals a day plus snacks in between, missing one of those opportunities can lead to a feeling that end times are near.
When you fast regularly, you're teaching your mind and body to handle an extended time without food.
While it might suck for the first few days, fasting can change how your hunger hormones function and teach you that it's okay if you happen to miss a meal or two.
Those hormones are a constant scapegoat for people who struggle to lose weight.
Think of it like an invisible flak vest. You can use it to make things harder or let it sabotage your performance. Your choice.
U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Garret Smith
Honestly, intermittent fasting isn't a great idea if you train hard or have a high level of aerobic and anaerobic endurance.
Eating food ensures that the energy you have for muscle contraction is plentiful. When you fast for hours on end, your body turns towards stored fat and sugar in your liver to help you survive. But that's not the best option if you need to train hard or perform for a long time.
Sure, fasting might not affect everyone the same, but if you usually eat around training, you'll almost certainly see a dip in performance at first.
Unless you take a long time to adjust to how fasting affects performance (this is a similar protocol to what you would need to do on a keto diet.), you might want to opt for a different protocol if high performance is important to you.
When you squeeze the trigger you better be sure you're gonna hit what you're aiming at. IF can help build your mental toughness, so you don't miss even in the fog of war (simulated or real).
U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Anthony Bryant
In the same light, using fasting strategically can help you develop the mental fortitude necessary to really push yourself when you're fatigued and don't have food available.
Just as you use weights, sprints, and long ruck marches get mentally and physically hard, jumping into challenging workouts when fasted can help you develop the mental toughness to push through when the going gets tough.
Here's how to use your workouts to do some serious mental toughness training.
No food is a stressor. If you already have a lot of other sources of stress, like you would at a selective school like OCS, maybe don't add another.
U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. George Nudo
Again, food not only provides energy for performance but also the fuel your body needs to repair and grow. If you're training hard and fasting every day, you could be missing out on recovery and growth.
You've probably heard of "bulking phases" where you're not only training hard but also eating more than usual. When people bulk, they're eating more food because those calories help support the growth and repair of muscles.
When you fast, eating enough calories becomes a bit difficult because you're spending so much time not eating.
On this diet, you're not only burning through calories for a large portion of the day, but you're making it more challenging to make up for those calories you're burning, like amino acids in the protein you eat.
Since you have less time to eat, you'll be fuller from each meal. As a result, it might be challenging to eat the same amount of calories as you would with a full day of eating opportunities.
Most importantly, if you train hard, need to recover and want to develop muscle, strength, and power, you're better off trying a different diet.
Send it back... or don't. Just make a choice and stick to it.
U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Webster Rison
Don't diet at all. Dieting is temporary.
You want a solution that will last you a lifetime. Try using strategies like Green-light and Red-light rules that I lay out in The Ultimate Composure Nutrition Guide, it's 100% free in my free resources vault.
Or give these a shot!
I highly discourage you from engaging in any diet that makes it harder to live your life. The point of eating food is to make you thrive, not just survive.
If you must, try this detailed protocol on how to cut weight for an upcoming weigh-in.
Maybe you prefer to fast as a part of your lifestyle. I often don't eat until noon, that's technically fasting. General McChrystal is a practitioner of the one meal a day protocol. Just ensure it's something you can do consistently.
If it's painful you won't want to do it indefinitely and that's the crux here. If you are struggling and need to talk to someone about losing fat, or your mind, contact me. I'll give you 30 minutes of my time with no expectation of anything in return. I've seen enough people cause some serious damage to their bodies and minds with dieting. Don't join that club, it's avoidable.

What to do during the coronavirus quarantine if you’re on a diet – USA TODAY
With travel out of the question due to the coronavirus pandemic, you can still have that gastronomic trip delivered to your home. Buzz60
Dairy is wiped out. There are two packages of chicken left. The vegetables are mostly gone.
These are the sights that have met Americans in grocery stores across the country as fears about the coronavirus pandemic have led to panic shopping. The absence of staple food products like bread, eggs and chicken is stressful for everyone, but particularly hard on those people who follow specialdiets for medical reasons or personal preferences.
When canned beans or pasta aren't options for you, it may seem like getting through a long stretch of social distancing might be impossible. But there are ways for those who follow vegan, gluten-free or keto dietsto make it through with substitutes, home cooking and a lot of patience.

Go for long-lasting produce.Root vegetables, cabbage, squash, apples and citrus fruits will stay ripe longerthan many greens and berries.
Make your own nut butters and milks.Whizzing nuts in a high-powered blender or food processor can replace almond butter from a jar.
Embrace vegan baking.Cookies made withaquafaba (aka, the liquid leftover from a can of chickpeas or other legumes), vinegar instead of eggs and butter in cakes, coconut oil instead of butter or lard in pastry many vegan baking tricks are more shelf stable than their traditional counterparts.
Many bread recipes are gluten-free.(Photo: Stephen Barnes / Getty Images)
The good news for those who must avoid gluten is that gluten-free products are less in demand than the regular wheat varieties, so you may not be facing shortages at your local store. But if you are, here are a few tricks.
Try veggie substitutes. If there is no gluten-free pasta at your store, grab some zucchini and make zoodles (with a spiralizer, oruse a vegetable peeler to make long strips that resemble fettuccine) with your favorite pasta sauce. An eggplant or portobello mushroom can be a burger bun.
Try gluten-free baking, but don't stress. There are hundreds of gluten-free baking recipes online, but many require specialty ingredients. But you can make simple edible cookie dough by grinding nuts in a food processor to use as flour, for instance; see more baking substitutes here. Sourdough breadscan be easier for people with gluten sensitivities to eat.

Foods often found on the ketogenic diet include fish, berries, nuts, eggs, cheese and avocado.(Photo: ThitareeSarmkasat / Getty Images)
In addition to being a popular diet for weight loss, people follow the ketogenic diet for a number of medical conditions, including epilepsy, diabetes and polycystic ovarian syndrome. The extremely low-carbohydrate diet relies mostly on meat, dairy, non-root vegetables and some nuts and seeds. Dairy in particular has been hard to acquire in manystores. Here are a few tips.
Pick long-lasting vegetables that are keto-friendly.Eggplant, spaghetti squash, cabbage and cauliflower are all low in carbohydrates and last for weeks when stored correctly.
There are some shelf-stable keto products.Coconut milk and cream, plain nuts and seeds, canned vegetables, chicken and beef broth, low-carb protein powder (great for making low-carb bread substitutes), canned pumpkin, ghee, coconut oil and pork rinds are among products worth investigating. Full-fat coconut milk can be used to replace dairy products in most recipes.
Make cheese or yogurt at home.If some dairy is available and some isn't, grabbing milk, heavy cream and live culture yogurt can set you up to create other dairy products at home. To make ricotta or paneer cheese, you need only distilled white vinegar or lemon juice, whole milk, heavy cream and salt. Milk and a little yogurt (with live cultures) can make much more yogurt (very easily if you have an electric pressure cooker).
Try new meat, or new ways of preparing it.Meat is disappearing from shelves, so now is the time to be creative. If ground meat is sold out, try grinding chicken thighs or a cut of beef in a food processor (freeze the meat for 15 minutes first, to help prevent the meat from getting mushy). Tinned chicken, meat and fish can be brought back to life with the proper recipes (chicken salad, fried canned meat, Caesar salad dressing).
Add more fat to your meals to make them more filling.Coconut oil, butter, mayonnaise and other fatty condiments can make a keto meal more filling without requiring another trip to the store for more chicken. Adding butter or coconut oil to coffee has long been a filling keto trick.

Try smaller, independent grocers.Asian and Latin markets, bodegas and other stores that aren't national chains may have a larger selection of products right now. Online markets that sell specialty ingredients are also viable.
Make smaller meals for the people in your family with dietary restrictions. If everyone usually eats gluten-free, but only one family member has celiac, try saving the gluten-free products specifically for that person, and let the rest of the family go through the pasta.
Lean on your spice drawer. If you can't vary your meals too much (they only had rice so you're eating a lot of rice now), vary meals with different spice combinations. Ingredients like soy sauce, anchovies and Worcestershire sauce can be added to many recipes to increase savory, umami flavor (anchovies in pasta sauce, it's not crazy).
Ferment everything!Kombucha, pickles, peppers, onions fermentation will help keep your food good for longer. It's also a fun hobby you might keep long after social distancing is gone.
Make big batches, freeze leftovers.Doubling a casserole and freezing the extra portions will give you easy, microwavable meals later.
Keep it simple and low waste.Rely on meals that are easy to prepare and don't create much waste. Save meat bones and vegetable scraps for making stock later. Use up vegetables in a frittata or soup before they go bad, fruit in a smoothie or dessert. You can even plant vegetable scraps if you have a backyard.
