Many people associate the high-fat keto diet with bacon, cheese, and cream. But theres a variation that's even more restrictive called ketotarian. This version eliminates most animal-based products and focuses on eating plant-based foods.
If you're unfamiliar with keto, the plan is a high fat, moderate protein, and low carbohydrate diet. The goal is to enter ketosis, or fat burning mode, which occurs when your body doesn't have enough carbs to use as energy.
Ketotarian was popularized by Will Cole, functional medicine expert and chiropractor, in his book, Ketotarian: The (Mostly) Plant-Based Plan to Burn Fat, Boost Your Energy, Crush Your Cravings, and Calm Inflammation. This version promises to deliver the weight-loss benefits of keto without eating plates full of meat and dairy, according to Cole's website.
Here's exactly what you need to know about this keto alternative:
This version markets itself as a mostly plant-based diet that excludes certain foods rumored to be inflammatory. Cole claims this diet is optimal for reducing your risk of chronic inflammation, which is linked to arthritis and cardiovascular diseases.
Although you can eat eggs, ghee, and fish, all other animal products are off limits. Dieters are encouraged to forego nightshade vegetables, which includes many grocery store staples:
Some people believe certain foodslike nightshades and vegetable oilscontribute to inflammation, explains Melanie Boehmer, R.D. at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. However, there's scant evidence to support these claims. The few studies that do link nightshades to inflammation study quantities that exceed what anyone actually eats.
"The amounts that are consumed are obscene and not natural to what were consuming," she says.

Ketosis is maintained when you consume about 70 percent of your daily calories from fat, 20 percent from protein, and 10 percent from carbs.
To reach fat burning mode, many dieters resort to eating plates of bacon, says Boehmer.
"When we think keto the thing that comes to mind are fattier cuts of animal protein," she tells Men's Health.
However, she says it is possible to maintain ketosis without heavy cream, pork belly, or cheese.
Boehmer recommends including nuts or seeds with every meal to hit your macros.
"They're calorically dense and theyre very high in fat," she says. "They do have some carbohydrates so you have to be aware of that."
Keto is already restrictive and this approach is going to further limit what you eat, says Boehmer.
She recommends eating as much variety as you can to avoid vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
However, Boehmer likes that this plan emphasizes eating plenty of plant-based foods rather than bacon and cheese.
Ultimately, you'll shed pounds if you eat fewer calories than what your body needs to maintain its current weight, says Boehmer.
"On keto, people tend to lose weight quicker on the front end because theyre taking out the starches," she says. "A lot of that initial weight loss is waternot fat mass. We just dont lose fat that quickly."
Due to its restrictive nature, this diet isn't for everyone, says Boehmer.
"If you are someone who has limited time, this is going to be challenging for you because it does involve planning," she says.
Further, she doesn't recommend strict diets for people who have a history of disordered eating.

Soccer enthusiast hopes to play again after Strive to Thrive – Richland Source
MANSFIELD Sue Hunt works as an administrative assistant at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital during the week and spends her time in Columbus at the Mapfre Stadium on the weekends.
I have people that ask me if I was a soccer mom and its, no, my son is a soccer orphan, Hunt said with a laugh.
Hunt, 61, took a special interest in soccer ever since her senior year of high school and has since gone on to make it a huge part of her life, hoping to always be a player.
My senior year was the first year that a girl could play guys sports, Hunt said. They didnt have a girls soccer team, so I hoped to try out and had people saying I would make the team, but we moved to Mansfield just before my senior year.
Susan Hunt, 61, is originally from Mansfield but has been moving around her entire life. She works at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital as an administrator assistant but worked there in IT for 40 years. Soccer is her greatest passion.
With popular movements such as #MeToo and the Womens March, Hunts proud of the progress made for women since she was a little girl.
Womens liberation started when I was just a little kid and I cant say that its changed that much. Its just that between the media, social media and the internet, it (womens empowerment) is pushed so much to the forefront.
Thirty years later, Hunts passion for soccer has only tripled. After learning she was a finalist in the Strive to Thrive contest, she became very excited.
Although shes participated in similar contests, she hopes that with this one shell be able to get in better shape, play soccer and run more marathons.
Growing up with parents who smoked and abused alcohol and seeing the toll it took on them, Hunt knew what she didnt want for herself as she got older. She has always taken her health seriously.
Ive kind of patterned my life as a non-smoker and a light alcohol user. I maybe average one drink a month just because I saw what a toll it took on their physical health.
According to Richland Public Healths 2016 community health assessment,In 2016, 50% of Richland County adults had at least one alcoholic drink in the past month, increasing to 60% of those under the age of 30.The 2015 BRFSS reported binge drinking rates of 18% for Ohio and 16% for the U.S.
Not all physicians list the different causes, so I only see on the death reports occasionally where theyve listed alcohol or tobacco abuse, said Richland Public Health educator and communications specialist Reed Richmond.

Hunt currently stands in first place after losing 8.76% body fat, however shes not in the competition for the grand prize of a free one-year gym membership at Ohio Health training facilities. In fact, she hopes the other contestants working just as hard as her will eventually overthrow her by the end.
If Hunt loses the goal amount of weight she wants to lose and gets back to her drivers license weight, she plans on rewarding herself by going zip-lining in Mohican.
Im on track for reaching my goal at the end of the competition, but I want to continue to progress into the summer so that hopefully I can maintain the same progress Ive been making, Hunt said.

Weight bias a human rights issue, says U of A researcher – The Gateway Online
Emerging research from the University of Alberta School of Public Health may be the key to understanding the stigma against certain body sizes in our society.
Alexa Ferdinands, a recipient of the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship in 2018 and PhD candidate at the School of Public Health, has been conducting research on weight bias in children and youth under the supervision of Dr. Kim Raine.
Ferdinands defines weight bias as the negative beliefs and attitudes that others have towards people based on their body size; this can include stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, and so on.
I was looking at how weight bias is socially organized, Ferdinands explained. So, how people in society are kind of coordinated to perpetuate weight bias without really knowing it.
Ferdinands interest in weight bias originated fromher experience as a registered dietician. Hearing stories from her former clients about their experiences with weight bias made Ferdinand wonder about the broader, societal issues that are impacting them.
The reason why Ferdinands wanted to work with children and youth is that weight bias starts incredibly young children, as young as three years old, are already judging others based on weight. For her, it made sense to look at young children for preventative reasons, considering how overlooked children in research currently are.
Weight bias affects everybody, Ferdinands said. Its not just something thats affecting people in larger bodies.
She added how there is a range of consequences that can happen to children and youth. Weight bias can lead to severe mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression and eating disorders, in youth. They can also experience social exclusion and bullying. Conversely, stress and social isolation can lead to long-term physiological problems, such as an increased risk of heart disease.
In Ferdinands view, there is a vicious cycle when it comes to obesity and stigma. Within her own experiences, she finds people think fat-shaming will lead people to lose weight, but thats not the case. Using stigma as a tool to reduce obesity has the opposite effect, in which it reinforces weight gain. People tend to avoid exercising in public if they feel like theyre going to be shamed or mocked. For some, binge eating is a coping mechanism, which also reinforces weight gain.
The main problem is that theres a lot of public health messaging that tends to be stigmatizing towards reducing obesity, Ferdinands explained. Public health hasnt done the greatest job.
Its not a question of whether adults or children are more likely to commit weight bias, but rather their actions. According to Ferdinands, weight bias is not always obvious, sometimes peoples behaviour can show implicit bias. As children become older, they tend to become more reflective. As a result, adults tend to recognize the explicit actions of their bias, but are unaware of their implicit actions.
Some people do admit that they have a weight bias, but sometimes [people] are not even aware of it because its just so ingrained in our culture, Ferdinands said. Its just a part of our implicit assumptions that we make about people based on their body size without even being conscious or aware of the fact that were doing it.
Ferdinands illustrated this through an example: when given the choice of socializing between two people, both adults and children will choose the thinner person out of the two.
She believes our society obsesses about peoples body too much. Additionally, Ferdinands thinks social media plays a factor in the way youth perceive their bodies. From a young age, they are bombarded with advertisements and unrealistic body standards on social media.
Its all related to capitalism. Theres no money to be made if people are content in their bodies, Ferdinands commented. The diet and weight loss industry, fitness, pharmaceuticals, there are a whole bunch of industries that are capitalizing off of our insecurities.
There are a few ways to reduce weight bias. One way is to challenge fat talk, which refers to the phenomenon of self-degrading talk about the body and weight. For instance, when someone says I look fat in these jeans, the expected response is someone contradicting this statement and assuring them that they are not fat.
Weight bias is a human rights issue, Ferdinands contends. Weight bias isnt going to be eliminated through one-on-one education in itself, its got to be more of a systematic level.

"Working at home is a double whammy," Julia Dugas, RDN, a dietitian with Life Time, tells LIVESTRONG.com. "First, you have access to your fridge and pantry all day long. Second, even with good intentions and daily at-home workouts, you are still likely far less active than your typical day (and burning less calories)."
That's why it's important you stick to a schedule eat exactly as you would if you were at the office. "Maintaining the same meal and snack structure can help you stay on track with the appropriate amount of food to continue towards your weight-loss goal," she says.
Preparing your meals ahead of time can help you do just that. With meal prep, you can "avoid getting sidetracked with unhealthy options or larger-than-intended portion sizes," Dugas explains.
"If you're used to going to a gym or group fitness classes, working out at home isn't an easy transition," says Emily McLaughlin, in-house certified fitness trainer and nutrition expert at 8fit.
But you can still find quality workouts and fitness instruction online to help you lose weight at home. The best part? There are plenty that won't cost you a penny.
McLaughlin recommends taking advantage of free workout apps and streaming services or following credible and credentialed certified personal trainers on Instagram and YouTube.
With so much fitness-related content in the palm of your smartphone-holding hand, you won't have an excuse to avoid exercising at home.
"If your workspace is right next to your kitchen, or you're working from your kitchen table, it's going to be extremely difficult to ignore all those snacks calling your name," Erika Fox, RDN, a registered dietitian and community manager for 310 Nutrition, tells LIVESTRONG.com.
The solution? Relocate! Find another spot to set up your workspace away from the temptations of the fridge and the pantry. "This will help keep you focused on your work and not so much on snacking," Fox says.
You don't need a gym to get in a good workout, just a little bit of space and motivation.

"If you don't have weights, a bike or treadmill at home, you'll need to get creative," McLaughlin says. In other words, use what you have available. Whatever the reason you're holed up at home, you might be feeling a little anxious and antsy without your regular routine in place.
"During times of high stress, our nutrient needs increase," Dugas says. "Getting a minimum of six (or more) servings of fruits and vegetables daily can ensure you're getting the vitamins and minerals you need for metabolic function, good energy levels and weight loss."
To keep you feeling fuller longer, Dugas recommends pairing fruits and veggies with foods that are high in protein and healthy fat. Think:
If you depend on a gym buddy to help you push through grueling exercise routines, you might find your stamina (and your motivation) lacking during solo workouts. But there's good news: You don't have to suffer through home sweat sessions alone.
By using video conferencing tools like FaceTime, Skype or Zoom, you can still connect with your gym partner from the comfort of your own home, McLaughlin says. Collaborate and plan your workouts ahead of time, then schedule your at-home "gym" sessions in your calendar.
This is a great way to hold yourself accountable and stay motivated while you're temporarily stuck in the house.
Track your water intake throughout the day to make sure you're drinking enough.

Don't forget to fill up your water bottle. Staying hydrated is a must-have for maintaining a healthy metabolism. That's because when you're not properly hydrated, your cells don't function efficiently, i.e., they slow down, Dugas says. And if this happens, your metabolism can grind to a halt.
Not being hydrated can also make you feel hungry. So, before you pop something in your mouth, try sipping some water first. Keeping hydrated can help you feel fuller and avoid the common pitfall of mistaking dehydration for hunger.
What's more, your water intake is also important for joint lubrication, muscle function and energy levels, Dugas explains. And you'll need healthy muscles, joints and strength to stay active and focused on your weight-loss goals.
Tuning into your hunger and fullness cues can help you avoid overeating and snacking unnecessarily, Dugas says. "When you make a trip to the fridge, check in with yourself: Are you feeling hungry or are you just bored, stressed, anxious or sad?"
In reality, you might just need a quick breather. "When you're at the office and feel like you need a brain break, it's easy to get up, walk around and chat with others, but at home, these brain breaks usually turn into snacking," Fox says. "Oftentimes, people aren't even hungry, but rather just need something to do so they can refocus."
Instead of resorting to snacks, try incorporating a different activity into your routine, says Fox who recommends going for a walk, taking a quick journal break, stretching or exercise.
Dugas agrees: Focusing on doing things you like (reading a book, calling a friend, running a bath, etc.) is a "good way to not only distract yourself, but to engage in an activity that can help you develop coping skills for reducing stress and anxiety in the long run."
To lose weight at home, remember to just keep moving.

Is all that time at home making you a couch potato? Unfortunately, spending countless hours on the sofa isn't good for your glutes.
"Our glute muscles get sleepy when we sit too much," McLaughlin says. And when our movement is limited, these muscles essentially go into hibernation.
Though leg and butt-focused workouts are a great way to combat this problem, you can also incorporate more movement throughout your day. McLaughlin recommends adding squats to your daily activities like washing your hands, emptying the dishwasher, brushing your teeth and waiting for water to boil.
A functional, compound exercise, squats not only activate the glutes but will also help you burn more calories and stay the course for your weight-loss efforts.
"Many people snack while working from home because they're either bored or need something to do while they work," Fox says. Just like when we watch TV, it's easy to engage in mindless eating when we keep a box of cookies next to the computer.
And with easy access to the fridge and pantry, this situation can quickly become a recipe for overindulging.
Again, heed your hunger cues and "when you are hungry, step away from the computer," Fox says. "Take the extra time to sit down and eat a snack or meal, and don't get back to work until you feel fully satisfied."
Bottom line: When your belly is happy, you're less likely to graze on greasy chips all day.

This version markets itself as a mostly plant-based diet that excludes certain foods rumored to be inflammatory. Cole claims this diet is optimal for reducing your risk of chronic inflammation , which is linked to arthritis and cardiovascular diseases.
Although you can eat eggs, ghee, and fish , all other animal products are off limits. Dieters are encouraged to forego nightshade vegetables, which includes many grocery store staples:
Some people believe certain foods, like nightshades and vegetable oils contribute to inflammation, explains Melanie Boehmer, R.D . at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. However, there's scant evidence to support these claims. The few studies that do link nightshades to inflammation include the food in quantities that exceed what you would normally eat.
"The amounts that are consumed are obscene and not natural to what were consuming," she says.

She recommends including as much variety as possible in your meals to ensure you don't lack in vitamins and minerals.
However, Boehmer likes that this plan emphasizes eating plenty of plant-based foods rather than bacon and cheese.
Ultimately, you'll shed pounds if your caloric intake is restricted to less than what your body needs to maintain its current weigh, says Boehmer.
"On keto, people tend to lose weight quicker on the front end because theyre taking out the starches,' she says. "A lot of that initial weight loss is waternot fat mass. We just dont lose fat that quickly."
Bottom line: you need to find a diet that you can maintain long-term.
Due to its restrictive nature, this diet isn't for everyone, says Boehmer.
"If you are someone who has limited time, this is going to be challenging for you because it does involve planning," she says.
Further, she doesn't recommend strict diets for people who have a history of disordered eating.

All across the world right now, many of us are practicing social distancing in order to slow the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19),thenew viral strainin the coronavirus family that affects thelungs and respiratory system. While unfortunately not all of us are complying yet, many states have thankfully begun enforcing shelter-in-place and curfews. COVID-19 is a serious matter. Its vital we take action now.
With many of us quarantining at home, lots of us are utilizing social media. And with us being on social media more frequently, we may be seeing an influx of diets and exercise routines placed right in front of our eyes. Ive seen some people joke about gaining weight during this pandemic and becoming ugly and fat. Its so important to not conflate the words ugly and fat because fat people do exist and there is no reason to insult them for existing. I love the quote, Im not pretty for a fat girl. Im pretty. Period.

As well as not having to lose weight, Im here to tell you that its perfectly OK if you gain weight during this time. It makes perfect sense. Some of us are stress eating or emotionally eating. Some of us are choosing to relax. Some of us cant exercise as much. Some of us are snacking more. Some of us have more time on our hands and feel bored.

While Im not eating more than usual, Ive found that Ive been eating my food quickly, likely due to stress and anxiety. Many of us are overstimulated right now. I bet many of us have trouble turning off the news or putting down our phones. I personally want to know the latest updates so I can be aware and abide by laws and regulations to keep myself and others safe.
I enjoy practicing intuitive eating, which is a wonderful practice of mindfulness to combat disordered eating or eating disorder behaviors. I slow down, notice how my food tastes, listen to my hunger-fullness, check in with my thoughts and emotions and am aware of how the food is affecting my different senses. However, we may not be able to practice intuitive eating right now due to stress, worry or anxiety about COVID-19.
One of my previous therapists, who specializes in eating disorders, told me its OK to sometimes use food to cope, when I shared with her I felt suicidal when I was a teenager. She said shed much rather me lean on this coping mechanism than not be alive. While of course, we want to lessen eating disordered behaviors and have a nourishing relationship with food, sometimes stressors arise where we have limited means of coping. We sometimes use food to cope. And thats OK. We are human. We arent perfect. We are ultimately trying to protect ourselves, cope and feel better.

Its heartbreaking that many people in recovery from eating disorders are struggling with quarantining right now, because that mirrors self isolation, which is something many of us struggle with in the depths of our illnesses. In treatment or therapy, we are told to not isolate and to be around supportive people. Right now, thats going to look a bit different because we cant physically see every person wed like to see, and we must self quarantine. I encourage people to video chat and text their supports right now. Its not the same, but it is a way to keep connected and ideally feel less alone.
We may come out of this quarantine however many pounds heavier, but is that really a bad thing? If thats the worst thing to happen, we did good. If you gain weight right due to emotional eating, snacking or eating more, or not exercising as much as you usually do, you are still the same person you were before. Your worth doesnt decrease or disappear if you gain weight.
If youre struggling with the idea of gaining weight right now, I encourageyou to write down five things you like about yourself, that have nothing to do with your appearance. You could even write it in the Notes section in your phone so you can access it quickly as a reminder. Are you a good friend? Are you a good listener? What do other people value about you? If you gain weight in the near future, take out this list and read it over. Take it in. You are more than your body. Weight gain could never change what people love about you.

1. Im compassionate. It helps me be understanding of others.
2. Im a talented writer and artist. I express myself through writing and art and other people value my work.
3. Im perceptive of other peoples emotions. I am quick to pick up on other peoples feelings, which means I can offer support and kindness.
4. Im mindful and self aware.
5. I value my friendships and enjoy making friends feel special and loved.
Please know its OK to gain weight while social distancing.
