Adele, obsessed with fitness and losing weight – Play Crazy Game

The physical aspect of the Adele current has nothing to do with the girl who some years ago broke into the music world singing Rolling in the deep and leaving the audience perplexed with his jet voice. Yes, there are those who say that the singer has been obsessed with the fitness and to follow slimming.

Health experts explain why remaining active during COVID-19 is important – WDTV

(WDTV)-- Now as some people are adjusting to working from home, it brings a new set of challenges.

The comfort of being able to sit on the couch for hours at a time is damaging physically and mentally.

"There are countless studies that show sitting down and being sedentary is not only nonproductive in the workplace but it's also just nonproductive in life in general," said the WV Heart Association Executive Director, Sarah Bolyard.

To find a way to stay active while sitting, fitness expert and author of The Way In: 5 Winning Strategies to Lose Weight, Get Strong and Lift Your Life, Andrea Marcellus says an easy ab exercise to help keep the core engaged is beneficial, and it can all be done from your favorite spot.

The exercises are safe for all ages. It is, however, best to modify according to the persons' ability and energy level.

"During this time it's very, very important to keep moving," Marcellus said. "Most importantly to boost your immunity," she said. "When you get your heart rate up, that will literally clean out your lungs and that will make you less susceptible to getting a cold flu or any kind of virus."

To keep your immune system strong, Bolyard said exercising is something that has to be done consistently.

"At the Heart Association, we encourage folks to get at lest 30 minutes of exercise a day for five days out of seven," she said.

Similar to work schedules and scheduling workouts, Marcellus suggested scheduling meals as well.

"Eat on schedule and stay as active as possible throughout the day," she said. "That's really the biggest tip."

Both Marcellus and the WV American Heart Association have tips to help with meals and staying active while home.

Marcellus has an app, called AND/life, that allows you to track and work on your health journey.

The WV American Association shares images to stay active and healthy on their Facebook page that you can download for free.

What Is The Volumetrics DietAnd Can It Help You Lose Weight? – Pulse Nigeria

Luckily, its not too good to be true: Developed by Barbara Rolls, Ph.D., a professor of nutritional sciences and obesity researcher at Penn State, the well-researched Volumetrics diet was named the number-two best diet for weight loss and tied for the number-five best diet overall (out of 40 diets) in the 2018 U.S. News & World Reports Best Diet Rankings . It received high scores from nutrition experts for being safe, effective, and sustainable in the long run.

And, yes, it centers on one fairly simple idea: filling up on fewer calories. The main claim, and premise by which the Volumetrics diet works, is the satiety claim, says Lisa Davis, Ph.D., chief nutrition officer at Terras Kitchen .

The primary focus is filling up on foods that are naturally low in calories and high in fiber or waterthink fruits, veggies, and soups. Since carbohydrates and proteins both provide four calories per gram, and fat provides nine calories per gram, you can eat more [carbs and protein] without the excess calories, she explains, noting that people following the Volumetrics diet can expect to lose up to two pounds per week.

Of course, like most things in life, theres more to the Volumetrics diet than meets the eye. We talked to a few registered dietitians to get the low-down on this eating approach.

If diets with strict rules and restrictions make you crazy, here's your reason to celebrate: You don't have to count calories , measure food, or log points on the diet. "Volumetrics is not a precisely prescribed diet plan, but rather a concept and overarching nutritional approach, says Paul Salter, R.D., nutrition editor for Bodybuilding.com and founder of Fit In Your Dress .

On the Volumetrics diet, food is divided into four groups, he explains. Your goal: Eat mostly foods in groups one and two, be mindful of portion sizes of foods in group three, and minimize choices of foods from group four. And nothing is completely off-limits.

Here's what you might eat in a typical day on the Volumetrics diet, according to Salter:

Of course, the million-dollar question: Is it legit? According to solid scientific research (including a 2016 meta-analysis of 13 studies that found a link between low-density foods and weight loss) and well, good old-fashioned common sense, it works. One of the main reasons why people break their healthy eating is because they get hungry, says Julie Upton, R.D., a registered dietitian and co-founder of Appetite for Health . Since you're still eating a high volume of food on the Volumetrics plan, you avoid those diet-busting hunger pains.

Hundreds of other nutrition studies back this up. In a 2007 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition , researchers randomly assigned 97 obese women to either a low-fat diet or a low-energy-dense, low-fat diet that emphasized fruits and vegetables. After a year, both groups lost weight, but the fruits-and-vegetables dieters lost even more14 pounds compared with 11 pounds. The researchers deemed low-energy-dense diets an effective way to drop pounds and keep them off.

A 2005 study published in Obesity Research , co-authored by the Volumetrics diet creator, Rolls, suggests that a diet high in low-density foods and soup, a staple on the Volumetrics eating plan, leads to substantial weight loss. Another study of 186 women found decreasing energy density is a way to prevent weight gain and obesity in both the short and long term.

Another perk of the Volumetrics diet: The majority of low-calorie, high-volume foods are nutrient-rich , and therefore positively impact your health in a variety of ways, Salter says.

Now, if alarm bells are ringing in your head, you're not alone. As we've written about before, not all high-calorie foods are "bad" for you. In fact, plenty of foods that are high in calories and fat are essential for good health, such as nuts, seeds, avocado, and fatty fish.

One potential drawback to this diet is that it recommends a very low consumption of nuts and seeds (since they are calorically dense), Davis explains. "Nuts and seeds provide monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids; both beneficial for cardiovascular and cognitive health."

This is why almonds can help you lose weight:

Plus, like many diet plans, it can also be difficult to dine out on the Volumetrics diet, since so many restaurants and food services prepare their food with high-calorie, high-fat butters and oils, Davis points out. But no foods are 100 percent prohibited on this dietit's more about putting the principles into practice.

First, you'll want to check out Rolls' book, The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet . Then, you'll want to make meal prep your BFF. "Buy all of your produce and prep a lot of it over the weekend," Upton suggests. You'll also want to find some great soup recipes. "Broth-based soups are very low in energy density and if you eat them before a meal, they can help you eat less," she says.

" Planning out your meals for the week ahead of time will be crucial to your success," Salter adds. "Try to keep some high-volume, convenient foods handy too, such as fresh fruit and plenty of low-fat dairy. Once you return from grocery shopping, make food prep a priority so that theres no thinking required at meal timesall you need to do is heat and eat!"

(Get the latest health, weight loss, fitness, and sex intel delivered straight to your inbox. Sign up for our "Daily Dose" newsletter.)

Finally, while it's not an essential component, the diet plan does encourage more movement throughout the day. There's no rigorous exercise program, but it does suggest simply increasing the amount of steps you take per day with the end goal of reaching around 10,000 steps, Davis says.

The bottom line? If the thought of prepping and eating more low-density foods, skipping calorie counts, and simply moving more sounds doable, you may be the perfect candidate to give the Volumetrics diet a try.

Take It In: Control weight with meal timing, exercise – The Triton

Take It In: by Carol Bareuther

Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper. Add moderate exercise to this age-old wisdom and youve got the prescription for weight loss or weight maintenance without necessarily following a special diet. These are the results and take-home recommendations of two recent studies.

In the first, Australian researchers writing in the January 2020 issue of Exercises and Sports Sciences Review looked at the effect of what they termed time-restricted eating, or TRE. This means eating over 8 to 10 hours a day so that the other 14 to 16 hours of the day youre, in effect, fasting. What led the researchers to look at the idea of TRE was the realization that our ancestors biological clock, including when they ate, was set by natural factors like sunrise and sunset. The rise and fall of various hormones in our bodies operates much the same way today.

However, our lifestyle is very different. We can keep lights on any hour of the day, and we have round-the-clock access to food. Add in not getting enough sleep or exercise to todays lifestyle, and these are all key culprits causing the current obesity epidemic.

When the Australian researchers reviewed previous studies, they found that a limited eating window of less than 10 hours a day helped in weight control. Specifically, in one study, overweight subjects lost 3% of their body weight by eating 20% fewer calories by eating over 10 hours rather than 14. An example of 10 hours is having breakfast at 8 a.m., dinner just before 6 p.m. and lunch somewhere in the middle.

Researchers noted that the TRE success could be because what we eat often corresponds to time of day. In other words, perhaps these subjects werent having that big bowl of ice cream, bag of chips, or box of cookies while watching TV at night because they didnt eat after a certain time. They did note that eating earlier in the day proved more beneficial than a 10-hour span running later, such as noon to 10 p.m.

A bonus in this research is that subjects maintained their weight loss for a year, yet they didnt change what or how much they ate. This makes the idea of TRE a practical, even painless, method of long-term weight control.

The second study found that adding exercise wasnt only a way to burn calories, but to help curb appetite and make it easier to stick to a calorie-reduced diet. Specifically, U.S. researchers writing in the March 2020 issue of the Journal of Health Psychology found that when study participants engaged in an hour of moderate physical activity, the odds of overeating or going off their diet dropped from 12% to 5%. This they ascribed to the appetite suppressing effect of exercise.

Interestingly, the researchers noted that moderate exercise was better at decreasing appetite and overeating than vigorous activity. That means, a brisk walk, game of doubles tennis or bike ride at less than 10 mph might be better exercise for appetite control than swift running, swimming laps or aerobic dancing.

Taken together, these two studies suggest that limiting eating to 10 hours and adding moderate exercise to your day can be potent, yet rather painless, ways to reach or maintain a healthy weight. Of course, while neither study directly addressed diet, eating nutrient-rich foods is always a plus. This means plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy foods, and lean proteins from meat, poultry, fish, nuts, seeds and beans.

7 Potential Dangers of the Keto Diet – Healthline

The ketogenic diet is a low carb, high fat diet commonly used for weight loss.

Restricting carbs and increasing fat intake can lead to ketosis, a metabolic state in which your body relies primarily on fat for energy instead of carbs (1).

However, the diet also carries risks you should be aware of.

Here are 7 keto diet dangers to know about.

Carb intake on the keto diet is typically limited to fewer than 50 grams per day, which can come as a shock to your body (2).

As your body depletes its carb stores and switches to using ketones and fat for fuel at the start of this eating pattern, you may experience flu-like symptoms.

These include headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and constipation due in part to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances that happen as your body adjusts to ketosis (3).

While most people who experience the keto flu feel better within a few weeks, its important to monitor these symptoms throughout the diet, stay hydrated, and eat foods rich in sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes (3).

As your body adjusts to using ketones and fats as its primary energy source, you may experience flu-like symptoms at the beginning of the keto diet.

High fat animal foods, such as eggs, meat, and cheese, are staples of the keto diet because they dont contain carbs. If you eat a lot of these foods, you may have a higher risk of kidney stones.

Thats because a high intake of animal foods can cause your blood and urine to become more acidic, leading to increased excretion of calcium in your urine (4, 5).

Some studies also suggest that the keto diet reduces the amount of citrate thats released in your urine. Given that citrate can bind to calcium and prevent the formation of kidney stones, reduced levels of it may also raise your risk of developing them (5).

Additionally, people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) should avoid keto, as weakened kidneys may be unable to remove the acid buildup in your blood that results from these animal foods. This can lead to a state of acidosis, which can worsen the progression of CKD.

Whats more, lower protein diets are often recommended for individuals with CKD, while the keto diet is moderate to high in protein (6).

Eating a lot of animal foods on the keto diet can lead to more acidic urine and a higher risk of kidney stones. This acidic state can also worsen the progression of chronic kidney disease.

Since the keto diet restricts carbs, it can be difficult to meet your daily fiber needs.

Some of the richest sources of fiber, such as high carb fruits, starchy vegetables, whole grains, and beans, are eliminated on the diet because they provide too many carbs.

As a result, the keto diet can lead to digestive discomfort and constipation.

A 10-year study in children with epilepsy on the ketogenic diet found that 65% reported constipation as a common side effect (7).

Whats more, fiber feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut. Having a healthy gut may help boost immunity, improve mental health, and decrease inflammation (8).

A low carb diet thats lacking in fiber, such as keto, may negatively affect your gut bacteria although current research on this topic is mixed (8).

Some keto-friendly foods that are high in fiber include flax seeds, chia seeds, coconut, broccoli, cauliflower, and leafy greens.

Due to its carb restrictions, the keto diet is often low in fiber. This may trigger constipation and negative effects on gut health.

Since the keto diet restricts several foods, especially nutrient-dense fruits, whole grains, and legumes, it may fail to provide recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals.

In particular, some studies suggest that the keto diet doesnt provide enough calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and phosphorus (9).

A study that evaluated the nutrient composition of common diets revealed that very low carb eating patterns like Atkins, which is similar to keto, provided sufficient amounts for only 12 of the 27 vitamins and minerals your body needs to obtain from food (10).

Over time, this may lead to nutrient deficiencies.

Notably, guidelines for clinicians who manage people on a very low calorie keto diet for weight loss recommend supplementing with potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, psyllium fiber, and vitamins B, C, and E (11).

Keep in mind that the nutritional adequacy of this diet depends on the specific foods that you eat. A diet rich in healthy low carb foods, such as avocados, nuts, and non-starchy vegetables, provides more nutrients than processed meats and keto treats.

Some studies suggest that keto provides insufficient vitamins and minerals, including potassium and magnesium. Over time, this could lead to nutrient deficiencies.

Low carb diets like keto have been shown to help manage blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.

In particular, some studies suggest that keto may help decrease levels of hemoglobin A1c, a measure of average blood sugar levels (12, 13, 14).

However, individuals with type 1 diabetes may be at a high risk of more episodes of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which is marked by confusion, shakiness, fatigue, and sweating. Hypoglycemia can lead to coma and death if not treated.

A study in 11 adults with type 1 diabetes who followed a ketogenic diet for over 2 years found that the median number of low blood sugar events was close to 1 per day (15).

Individuals with type 1 diabetes typically experience low blood sugar if they are taking too much insulin and not consuming enough carbs. Thus, a low carb keto diet may increase the risk.

Theoretically, this could also happen to individuals with type 2 diabetes who are taking insulin medications.

Even though low carb diets have been shown to improve blood sugar control in people with diabetes, they may also increase your risk of low blood sugar events especially if you have type 1 diabetes.

The keto diet is also associated with impaired bone health.

Several studies in animals link the keto diet to decreased bone strength, likely due to losses in bone mineral density, which may occur as your body adapts to ketosis (16, 17).

In fact, a 6-month study in 29 children with epilepsy on the keto diet discovered that 68% had a lower bone mineral density score after going on the diet (18).

Another study in 30 elite walkers determined that those who followed keto for 3.5 weeks had significantly higher levels of blood markers for bone breakdown, compared with those who ate a diet higher in carbs (19).

All the same, more extensive research is warranted.

The keto diet may reduce your bone mineral density and trigger bone breakdown over time, though further studies are needed.

The ketogenic diets effect on your risk of chronic illness, such as heart disease or cancer, is hotly debated and not entirely understood.

Some evidence suggests that high fat, low carb diets that focus on animal foods may lead to poor health outcomes, while diets that emphasize vegetable sources of fats and proteins provide benefits (20, 21).

A long-term observational study in over 130,000 adults linked animal-based low carb diets to higher rates of death from heart disease, cancer, and all causes (21).

On the other hand, vegetable-based low carb diets were associated with a lower rate of death from heart disease and all causes (21).

Another study in over 15,000 adults found similar results but tied both low and high carb diets to a greater all-cause death rate, compared with moderate carb diets in which carbs comprised 5055% of total daily calories (22).

Yet, more substantial studies are needed.

While research is mixed, some evidence suggests that low carb diets that focus on animal foods may lead to higher death rates from heart disease, cancer, and all causes.

While the keto diet is linked to weight loss and other health benefits in the short term, it may lead to nutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, poor bone health, and other problems over time.

Due to these risks, individuals with kidney disease, diabetes, heart or bone ailments, or other medical conditions should speak to their healthcare provider before trying the keto diet.

You may also want to consult a dietitian to plan balanced meals and monitor your nutrient levels while on this diet to help minimize the risks of complications and nutrient deficiencies.

The 90s Animated Series CONAN: THE ADVENTURER Fueled Kids with Massive Amounts of Testosterone – GeekTyrant

Conan: The Adventurer the theme song alone and opening sequence for the 90s animated series was overflowing with masculinity and testosterone! After He-Man and Thundercats, this was the most testosterone-fueled cartoon series that a kid could watch in the 90s!

The series followed a young Cimmerian barbarian named Conan and his allies who "must stop snake-man wizard Wrath-Amon and his snake-men army from resurrecting evil serpent god Set. Conan must also destroy the evil wizard's ring that turned his family into stone.

The series was based on the iconic character created byRobert E. Howardin the 1930s. The series was created by Christy Marx, and it originally debuted on September 13th, 1992, and ran for 65 episodes. It came to a close on November 22, 1993. The series went on to spawn a small toy line in 1992 created byHasbro.

Heres a full detailed story summary for the series for those of you who want a little reminder:

Conan lived inCimmeriawith his parents throughout his childhood. While out with his grandfather one night on a trek, "fiery tears" or meteors dropped from the skies. Conan collected them and brought them back to his family. Conan's father, the village blacksmith, used the ore from the meteors to forge Star Metal and used it to create various tools and weapons that would never rust or break or dull. He sold them, but his finest work, a magnificent sword, he kept for Conan. It was laid in a crypt and covered over with a heavy stone slab. Conan's father told his son that only when he was "man enough" (i.e., strong enough) to push off the stone slab, could he rightfully claim the sword.

Meanwhile, the evilSerpent Manwizard Wrath-Amon learned of Star Metal and that in addition to its strength that it possessed the power to open portals between dimensions. He thus sought Star Metal to release his deitySetfrom "the Abyss" to which he long ago had been banished by the combined powers of virtually every living wizard then on Earth for trying to enslave the human race. As part of his search, Wrath-Amon sought out Conan's family. Conan's father told Wrath-Amon that he had sold all of the Star Metal, but the wizard refused to believe it. The wizard was right for aside from the sword, it was revealed in a later episode that Conan's father had hidden pieces of Star Metal with other villagers. Wrath-Amon used the spell of living stone upon Conan's family.

Conan by then had gone to claim his Star Metal sword to attack Wrath-Amon and his followers. When the Star Metal sword got near Wrath-Amon, it disrupted his magic and showed his reptilian face. To this, he said "Those who see the true face of Wrath-Amon must perish!" (this scene is similar to one in the film). Having chased away the wizard, Conan then turned to his family and swore in the name of their godCromto find a way of releasing them from the spell.

Conan's adventures thus begin as he searches Hyboria looking for a way to cure his family and free the land from Wrath-Amon's rule. Wrath-Amon's henchmen are alsoshapeshiftingSerpent Men. When Conan's Star Metal sword is close enough to them, it broke the spell that disguised them and revealed their true form to be Serpent Men. When Star Metal made contact with the Serpent Men, it banishes them to the Abyss with Set. Spies and agents of Set and Stygia, many of them also Serpent Men, were present in many cities, nations and tribes throughout the land in the age of Conan.

As compared with the original Conan stories and theMarvel Comicssuch asKing Conan,Conan Saga,Conan the BarbarianandConan the King, the cartoon Conan displays a higher degree of modern morality. While the original Conan is a thief, a killer, and a philanderer, the cartoon Conan has more in common with sword-wielding cartoon characters such asHe-Man. At one point, he refuses to join a pirate crew on the grounds that it is wrong to steal, he refuses to strike unarmed or defeated opponents. He is a kind and caring character, albeit a little naive, who stands up for his friends and what he sees to be right and is very respectable. The show also reduced the violence of the original to cartoon levels, deliberately making the Serpent Men "banished" with any touch of the heroes' weapons rather than actually struck.

The Snake Cult in the cartoon is different from The Snake Cult in the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, which the cartoon is based on. In the film, The Snake Cult is led by the evil sorcerer Thulsa Doom, and in the film, Thulsa Doom and his warriors raid Conan's village and murder Conan's tribe including his parents. In the cartoon, The Snake Cult is led by Wrath-Amon, an evil wizard, and Wrath-Amon turns Conan's family into stone statues.

As someone who is a fan of Conan, I enjoyed watching the series as itlargely stayed true toRobert E. Howard's material. They just had to tone some things down for the kids. It was actually really fun, and I wish it would have gone on a little longer. Regardless, at least we got what we have!

Below youll fun the American opening title sequence for the series!

If you want to watch the series, its currently available on the free streaming service Tubi.

Everyone Else Is Dealing with COVID-19. Idahos Pushing an Anti-Trans Bill – VICE

Lindsay Hecox was looking forward to finally running track in college. Hecox, a 19-year-old freshman at Boise State University, ran cross country in high school and said it was the only place where she felt like she could be herself. In addition to describing herself as a shy introvert, Hecox has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which made it difficult to make friends. Running provided her a shared experience to bond with her classmates.

Even though I definitely wasn't the most social, I still felt accepted, Hecox told VICE. I was a pretty good runner and everyone likes you if youre nice and you can run fast.

Hecox, who came out as transgender at the end of her senior year of high school, took the year off from running competitively to start transitioning and focus on her studies. Guidelines established by the NCAA state that trans female athletes must take medications that suppress their testosterone levels for a year before they are allowed to compete, and she started hormone replacement therapy last September. That means she could have been eligible for the 2020-2021 school year. (The NCAA told The Hill last month that it was monitoring the bills progress.)

If she had made the team, Hecox would have made history: No transgender student athlete has ever competed openly on a collegiate track team in Idaho. Hecox said she wasnt looking to break records, though. She just wanted to feel at home again.

Running really helps stabilize me, as I sometimes have mood fluctuations, Hecox said. If I go out for a run, it cleans the slate, and I feel like I can release a little bit of stress after that. If you have a friend and youre running alongside them, it feels like youre losing track of time and it gets your mind off things, as you just look forward to the next mile marker.

But Hecox could soon be banned from the sport she loves if Idaho signs a bill into law that would prohibit transgender women and girls from participating in school athletics in alignment with their gender identity. House Bill 500, also known as the Fairness in Womens Sports Act, applies to student-athletes playing in K-12 sports and at the collegiate level, no matter if the university is public or private. The legislation is headed to Gov. Brad Littles desk after passing the Idaho Senate last Monday by a 24-11 vote and the House last month, both of which are dominated by Republicans.

HB 500 isnt the only anti-trans bill awaiting the governors proverbial pen. Just days after the Senate overwhelmingly approved the trans sports ban, it also passed House Bill 509, which prevents transgender people from updating their birth certificates to match their lived gender. In a Thursday vote, all but six Senators approved the legislation, also called the Idaho Vital Statistics Act.

Little has yet to state whether he intends to support either of the two proposals, but when asked about them last month, the governor was quoted in the Idaho Press as saying hes not a big discrimination guy.

The bills have been met with virulent opposition from civil rights groups. Kathy Griesmyer, policy director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho, said their passage would set a really dangerous precedent that would likely be used as a model for discriminating against transgender people in other states. Although the ACLU estimated that 17 states in the U.S. have introduced bills in the 2020 legislative session that would restrict the ability of trans students to compete in school sports, none have passed. HB 500 would be the first bill of its kind in the nation.

There are really devastating consequences if HB 500 becomes law, Griesmyer told VICE. This has the potential to harm intersex people, women who present too masculine, or anybody who wants to use this law to go after a competitor.

Among the most glaring issues with HB 500 is that it stipulates that a student athletes biological sex would have to be determined by one of three factors before they are allowed to compete. These options are a test of the individuals internal and external reproductive anatomy, normal endogenously produced levels of testosterone, or genetic makeup.

But as in the case of a similar bill introduced in Arizona, the legislation does not establish a process for bringing about these claims, meaning that any student or their parent could accuse an athlete on an opposing team of being transgender. Accused students, many of whom as likely to be cisgender, would thereby be forced to undergo costly DNA testing or an invasive genital exam. The proposal also does not state what body would be responsible for looking into complaints or how a students private medical information would be protected.

Notably, the Arizona bill was watered down to remove the genital testing components following public backlash. The Idaho legislation has remained unchanged, despite the concerns of LGBTQ advocacy groups.

This bill is not based on science, Kate Oakley, senior counsel for the Human Rights Campaign, told VICE. It is legislation that is based purely in misinformation about trans youth, and it is targeting trans youth for discriminatory treatment. For any trans person in Idaho, they are now on notice that their government is willing to make laws that are based on fear and not facts.

The anti-trans bills are likely to be met with immediate legal action should they be signed into law, as five former Idaho attorneys general argued in a March 17 letter addressed to Little. In particular, critics said HB 509, the birth certificate bill, would violate a court order from U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Candy W. Dale, who ruled in March 2018 that Idahos policy of denying birth certificate corrections on the basis of gender identity was unconstitutional. Prior to that time, Idaho was one of three statesalong with Ohio and Tennesseethat did not allow trans people to update their birth records.

When that policy was overturned in district court, Emilie Jackson-Edney was one of the first people in Idaho to apply for a corrected birth certificate. Jackson-Edney, who sits on the board of the Pride Foundation in Boise, said she had started her application process eight years earlier but that the long wait was worth it.

Its necessary to navigate safely through society with minimal harassment and minimal scrutiny, Jackson-Edney told VICE, noting that a third of trans people without a corrected birth certificate report experiencing mistreatment and even physical violence as a result. Its a safety issue. For trans people having concurrent identity documents that reflect their gender identity is really critical, and not being able to have them would be very difficult.

What makes these bills particularly hurtful for trans people in Idaho is the timing of the legislation. They were pushed through the state Senate during the same week that municipalities across the country took measures to curb the spread of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. And yet in Idaho, little has been done to stop its citizens from contracting coronavirus.

I havent seen one thing from the [state] government other than telling us to wash our hands, and I honestly don't think that were taking it very seriously, said Yarit Rodriguez, who runs a support group for trans youth in Idaho, told VICE. He added that it doesn't make sense to him why passing anti-trans bills is more important than an outbreak affecting multiple communities.

The lack of statewide action on coronavirus is particularly personal for Hecox, who was being forced out of her dorm at Boise State as she spoke over the phone on Thursday. The university sent an email to students earlier the same day ordering anyone who hadnt already abandoned campus housing to evacuate the premises within the week. Although many students who have family in the area have the option to simply move back home, it wasnt so easy for her.

I was living with my grandparents in California before, she said. They don't want another person living with them because of their age. They are susceptible to having a bad reaction to the virus or dying.

To keep Hecox from being homeless, her mother is uprooting her life in California to move to Boise. Even as the federal government debates a trillion-dollar stimulus package that would provide greater assistance to families like hers, which have been forced into impossible situations, Hecox noted that Idaho lawmakers had yet to make any similar moves. The Senate wrapped for the year on Thursday, while the House finished up the following day.

They have not passed any legislation for that, she said of a statewide coronavirus relief effort. They dont have their priorities straight.

Females Live Longer Than MalesAmong Humans and Other Mammals, Too – Smithsonian.com

Women live longer than men by an average of six to eight years, according to the World Health Organization. This intriguing trend is seen in nearly every country around the world, suggesting that it may be driven by profound biological differences between the sexes. And longevity may not be limited to human females; according to a sweeping new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a range of female mammals live longer than their male counterparts, too.

Scientists have long assumed this to be true, but according to the study authors, the assumption was based on a small number of case studies on wild mammals, or records of mammals housed in captivity, where lifespan and aging patterns are often not representative of conspecifics in the wild. For the new report, the researchers compiled and analyzed demographic data from different types of studies, including mortality estimates that had been obtained from long-term monitoring of wild populations, and mortality rates obtained from dead animals collected in the field. In total, the teams analysis covered 134 populations and 101 species, including lions, orcas, reindeer, and squirrels.

Among 60 percent of the populations studied, females lived longer than males. On average, their lifespans were 18.6 percent longer, which is considerably higher than the advantage for female humans, who live on average 7.8 percent longer than their male counterparts.

But why do such discrepancies exist between the sexes? Scientists have long sought to answer this question as it pertains to humans, and complex behavioral differences likely come into play. Men, for instance, are more likely to smoke, drink excessively and be overweight, Perminder Sachdev, a professor of neuropsychiatry at the University of New South Wales in Australia who has studied human longevity, told Times Markham Heid last year. They are also less likely to seek medical help and to adhere to medical treatments.

Biological factors may also drive the survival gap. Testosterone, for instance, increases levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in men, putting them at greater risk of hypertension, stroke and heart disease.

Womens biology, on the other hand, may give them a boost. One theory posits that having two copies of the same sex chromosome confers protective benefits that govern longevity; women have two copies of the X chromosome, while men have X and Y chromosomes. Earlier this month, a study in Biology Letters gave credence to this hypothesis when it found a link between sex chromosomes and lifespan across more than 200 species. Female mammals, which have two of the same chromosomes, tended to live longer than males. The dual-chromosome trend applied to species that don't have X or Y chromosomes, too, and to species that in which males have two of the same chromosomes. For example, male birds, which have two Z chromosomes, have the survival advantage over females, which have one Z and one W chromosome.

The authors of the new study note that male mammals also devote substantial resources toward the growth and maintenance of secondary sexual traits, like larger body size or antlers. In certain environmental circumstances, these traits might come at a cost. When looking at bighorn sheep, for instance, the researchers found virtually no difference in lifespan between males and females in ranges where resources were consistently available. But in one location where winters are particularly harsh, there were significant sex differences in lifespan.

Male bighorn sheep use lots of resources towards sexual competition, towards the growth of a large body mass, Jean-Francois Lematre, first author of the new study, tells Matt McGrath of the BBC. [T]hey might be more sensitive to environmental conditions.

Both genetic variations and environmental conditions, in other words, likely play a role in sex differences in lifespan. Untangling these intertwined factors wont be easy, the study authors acknowledgebut further research, they write, will undoubtedly provide innovative insights into the evolutionary roots and physiology underlying aging in both sexes.
