How do you work out when the gyms are closed? Vancouver’s fitness industry moves online – CTV News

VANCOUVER -- With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing hundreds of businesses across Metro Vancouver to close their doors, the fitness industry is finding ways to adapt. Health professionals losing clients are turning to technology to keep people moving, motivated and connected.

On Sunday morning, music was pumping from the studios of the F45 gym in Kits Point, the same as most days before the coronavirus pandemic. This Sunday, however, no one was inside, except for two trainers. They set up a camera so they could coach the same workout, but stream it live on social media.

We also had a zoom chat going so while following us in the workout people could also see each other, said senior trainer Patch May. Even just being closed for six days, people are already feeling that bit of isolation.

Its a similar situation across the city. Sweat Co. downtown offers group classes and personal training, but all treadmills, weights and equipment sit unused.

This is the first time in 36 years Ive ever had to close, said owner Maureen Wilson. Shes had to lay off staff and is trying to find ways to keep the business afloat without people coming through the doors.

We are still encouraging people to buy gift cards," Wilson said.

Then, there are trainers themselves: small business owners operating out of multiple gyms that no longer have clients.

Theres nowhere for me to meet up with clients and work them out in a one-on-one atmosphere, said fitness instructor Hayley McGowan. My work has definitely decreased.

Vancouver has been lucky to experience sunny skies and relatively warm temperatures since residents were first asked to stay home and maintain physical distance from others. The week of good weather has allowed residents to head outside to exercise. But, with rain in the forecast this week, its back to the living room.

The owners of Vancouvers largest dance studio, Harbour Dance Centre, say this is the perfect time to try something new. Theyve launched a series of class videos on YouTube for people to take part in dance classes from home.

If you have the time and you want to remain fit, active and you want to listen to some great music, this is a great opportunity, said co-owner Moe Brody. Everybody has a ballet bar: you have a chair, you have a kitchen counter, even a bed frame. If its something youve never done before, this is a great time to try.

In times of uncertainty, fitness professionals say its even more important to keep the mind and the body healthy.

Even moving five minutes, 10 minutes, just takes us out of that moment of fear and brings us into the present moment and allows us to reconnect with reality. McGowan said.

Pescatarian Diet: How Does it Work? Facts, Benefits and Risks – LIVESTRONG.COM

In the eating world, there are all sorts of "-arians" these days. There are vegetarians, of course, but also fruitarians (those who eat only or mostly fruit) and even breatharians (those who believe they only need air or sunlight for sustenance please, don't try that one at home!).

A pescatarian diet has been linked to a range of health benefits, including weight loss.

Some of these eating approaches are controversial, to say the least, but the pescatarian diet is a sound, scientifically backed plan that can help you reach a variety of health goals.

Here, we'll dig into the definition of pescatarianism along with what pescatarians can and can't eat, the benefits and drawbacks of the diet and everything else you need to know to decide if it's right for you.

The pescatarian diet is essentially a vegetarian diet that incorporates fish or seafood. The diet typically includes animal-based foods like milk and eggs but does not include meat (think: chicken, pork or beef). The term itself is a combination of the words vegetarian and "pesce," which is Italian for fish. For this reason, it is sometimes (but less commonly) spelled pescetarian.

A hurdle in following strict vegetarian diets can be getting enough protein. This isn't usually an issue with the pescatarian diet, though, because it includes fish as a major protein source.

Even though the pescatarian diet is typically regarded as a close cousin to the Mediterranean diet, it can easily be followed with all types of cuisine, including Asian, Indian or Mexican.

You might be surprised at the wide variety of foods you can eat on the pescatarian diet. Overall, it's an extremely flexible way to eat that includes a lot of nutrient-dense foods.

All fruits and vegetables are allowed on the pescatarian diet. That's right all of them.

When you're eating a plant-based diet, your intake of fruits and vegetables should go up (as in, these staples should fill at least half your plate at meals). The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend you get at least 2.5 cups of vegetables each day and 2 cups of fruit (for a 2,000-calorie diet). Let that be your guide and increase the amount as needed to fill your plate.

With a pescatarian diet, one of your major protein sources will be fish. Other protein foods that are allowed on the pescatarian diet are beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, peas, soy products like tofu and sometimes eggs and dairy.

Keep your protein sources healthy, so no deep-fried catfish or fish sticks. Use cooking methods like broiling, roasting or grilling.

Add nuts to snacks and salads to get more protein throughout the day.

Here's the protein content of some popular pescatarian sources:

While fish and seafood are allowed on a pescatarian diet, the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend adults following a 2,000-calorie diet get two servings per week. With that in mind, pescatarians should aim to include other sources of plant-based protein throughout the week.

Since grains are also plants, they will be an important part of your pescatarian diet. Grains provide important nutrients such as B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, fiber and protein.

Your grain choices are vast and limited only by your imagination and maybe cooking skills. The Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health calls whole grains the "complete package." Their health benefits include helping with blood sugar control, lowering cholesterol levels and cancer prevention.

The recommendation from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans is to include at least six servings of grains per day and make at least half of them whole grains.

The "gray area" of nutrition are the foods that lie outside of normal meal patterns. This is where good healthy nutrition can take a backseat. Most types of drinks are permitted on plant-based diets, including the pescatarian diet. But to keep your intake healthy, limit or avoid sugary beverages like soda and juice and opt instead for naturally low-calorie beverages like water, coffee and tea.

As for snacks, these should fall within the types of foods that are allowed at meals. Fresh fruit, veggies, yogurt, popcorn, cheese, hummus and nuts are all good choices when planning out your snacks.

If you are staying firm in your convictions to eat a pescatarian diet, then you should not be eating any meat. This means no beef, lamb, poultry, pork or any other animal meat. This also means you should not eat snacks made from meat, such as jerky.

Steer clear of the candy and treats with a lot of added sugar, too. While they are technically pescatarian-friendly, you should always have your eye on the path to health. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that women and children keep their intake of added sugar to no more than 6 teaspoons each day and no more than 9 teaspoons per day for men.

Also, consider limiting plant-based "meats," mainly because they are highly processed and may contain large amounts of sodium. Just because you're eating a plant-based diet doesn't mean you can go crazy with salt. (The AHA recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams of salt a day.)

Pescatarians enjoy many of the same health benefits vegetarians do, as well as a few extra.

A plant-based diet is loaded with antioxidants, and these have a huge affect on your health. According to a November 2017 review published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, vegetarians have a reduced risk for heart disease and overall cancer.

Harvard Medical School indicates a plethora or health benefits for those who follow a healthy vegetarian diet, including:

Adding fish to your diet will naturally increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids, which are present in good amounts in fatty fish like salmon. According to an extensive January 2019 review published in Nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids are important in reducing inflammation, muscle soreness, cardiovascular risk factors and joint stiffness and pain.

If followed in a healthy way, yes, you can lose weight by following a pescatarian diet. According to a September 2019 review published in Translational Psychiatry, people who followed a plant-based diet generally achieved more weight loss than those who followed an omnivore diet.

There are caveats to this, as always, when looking at a certain diet for weight loss. Keep these basic principles in mind if weight loss is your goal:

There is a lot of noise surrounding the environmental effects of varying diet patterns. According to an April 2019 study published in Nutrients, researchers indicated that a pescatarian diet reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 64 percent relative to diets that include meat, which is slightly more than vegetarian diets at 63 percent. But the vegan diet wins in this regard by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 83 percent.

The environmental footprint of the pescatarian diet on other environmental factors such as cropland, freshwater, nitrogen and phosphorus use are comparable to vegetarian diets and less than meat-oriented and protein-oriented eating plans. So, if you are looking to reduce your footprint on the environment with your diet, plant-based eating is a great way to start.

When switching to a pescatarian diet, you are likely to experience some frustrations.

Meal planning: One of the biggest changes when adopting a plant-based diet is the need for meal prep and cooking. While there are shortcuts in the grocery store (pre-cut veggies, canned beans, pre-cooked grains), it is essential that you have a plan in place every day for meals. Otherwise, you might get stuck at the snack machine staring down all the not-so-healthy (albeit pescatarian-friendly) options.

Mercury in fish: Another concern when adding large amounts of seafood to the diet is the risk of ingesting too much mercury. For this reason, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences indicates those who should watch their seafood intake include young children, pregnant women and nursing mothers. However, up to 12 ounces a week of fish low in mercury levels is fine for most people.

What Is The Volumetrics DietAnd Can It Help You Lose Weight? – Pulse Ghana

Luckily, its not too good to be true: Developed by Barbara Rolls, Ph.D., a professor of nutritional sciences and obesity researcher at Penn State, the well-researched Volumetrics diet was named the number-two best diet for weight loss and tied for the number-five best diet overall (out of 40 diets) in the 2018 U.S. News & World Reports Best Diet Rankings . It received high scores from nutrition experts for being safe, effective, and sustainable in the long run.

And, yes, it centers on one fairly simple idea: filling up on fewer calories. The main claim, and premise by which the Volumetrics diet works, is the satiety claim, says Lisa Davis, Ph.D., chief nutrition officer at Terras Kitchen .

The primary focus is filling up on foods that are naturally low in calories and high in fiber or waterthink fruits, veggies, and soups. Since carbohydrates and proteins both provide four calories per gram, and fat provides nine calories per gram, you can eat more [carbs and protein] without the excess calories, she explains, noting that people following the Volumetrics diet can expect to lose up to two pounds per week.

Of course, like most things in life, theres more to the Volumetrics diet than meets the eye. We talked to a few registered dietitians to get the low-down on this eating approach.

If diets with strict rules and restrictions make you crazy, here's your reason to celebrate: You don't have to count calories , measure food, or log points on the diet. "Volumetrics is not a precisely prescribed diet plan, but rather a concept and overarching nutritional approach, says Paul Salter, R.D., nutrition editor for Bodybuilding.com and founder of Fit In Your Dress .

On the Volumetrics diet, food is divided into four groups, he explains. Your goal: Eat mostly foods in groups one and two, be mindful of portion sizes of foods in group three, and minimize choices of foods from group four. And nothing is completely off-limits.

Here's what you might eat in a typical day on the Volumetrics diet, according to Salter:

Of course, the million-dollar question: Is it legit? According to solid scientific research (including a 2016 meta-analysis of 13 studies that found a link between low-density foods and weight loss) and well, good old-fashioned common sense, it works. One of the main reasons why people break their healthy eating is because they get hungry, says Julie Upton, R.D., a registered dietitian and co-founder of Appetite for Health . Since you're still eating a high volume of food on the Volumetrics plan, you avoid those diet-busting hunger pains.

Hundreds of other nutrition studies back this up. In a 2007 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition , researchers randomly assigned 97 obese women to either a low-fat diet or a low-energy-dense, low-fat diet that emphasized fruits and vegetables. After a year, both groups lost weight, but the fruits-and-vegetables dieters lost even more14 pounds compared with 11 pounds. The researchers deemed low-energy-dense diets an effective way to drop pounds and keep them off.

A 2005 study published in Obesity Research , co-authored by the Volumetrics diet creator, Rolls, suggests that a diet high in low-density foods and soup, a staple on the Volumetrics eating plan, leads to substantial weight loss. Another study of 186 women found decreasing energy density is a way to prevent weight gain and obesity in both the short and long term.

Another perk of the Volumetrics diet: The majority of low-calorie, high-volume foods are nutrient-rich , and therefore positively impact your health in a variety of ways, Salter says.

Now, if alarm bells are ringing in your head, you're not alone. As we've written about before, not all high-calorie foods are "bad" for you. In fact, plenty of foods that are high in calories and fat are essential for good health, such as nuts, seeds, avocado, and fatty fish.

One potential drawback to this diet is that it recommends a very low consumption of nuts and seeds (since they are calorically dense), Davis explains. "Nuts and seeds provide monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids; both beneficial for cardiovascular and cognitive health."

This is why almonds can help you lose weight:

Plus, like many diet plans, it can also be difficult to dine out on the Volumetrics diet, since so many restaurants and food services prepare their food with high-calorie, high-fat butters and oils, Davis points out. But no foods are 100 percent prohibited on this dietit's more about putting the principles into practice.

First, you'll want to check out Rolls' book, The Ultimate Volumetrics Diet . Then, you'll want to make meal prep your BFF. "Buy all of your produce and prep a lot of it over the weekend," Upton suggests. You'll also want to find some great soup recipes. "Broth-based soups are very low in energy density and if you eat them before a meal, they can help you eat less," she says.

" Planning out your meals for the week ahead of time will be crucial to your success," Salter adds. "Try to keep some high-volume, convenient foods handy too, such as fresh fruit and plenty of low-fat dairy. Once you return from grocery shopping, make food prep a priority so that theres no thinking required at meal timesall you need to do is heat and eat!"

Finally, while it's not an essential component, the diet plan does encourage more movement throughout the day. There's no rigorous exercise program, but it does suggest simply increasing the amount of steps you take per day with the end goal of reaching around 10,000 steps, Davis says.

The bottom line? If the thought of prepping and eating more low-density foods, skipping calorie counts, and simply moving more sounds doable, you may be the perfect candidate to give the Volumetrics diet a try.

The MasterChef star, 55, treated fans to the snap during a recent workout session.

In a series of photos shared to Instagram, Gregg lifted up his t-shirt to showcase his toned abs atthe gym.

The TV host appeared delighted as he flashed a smile for the camera.

Alongside the snap, he wrote: "Its all gonna be ok, I've got a good gut feeling!"

Following the upload, Gregg later revealed he was taking a break from the gym.

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered all gyms, along with cafes, theatres, clubs, bars, shops, cinemas and restaurants, to close amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Gregg - who was once 16st - decided to overhaul his life in recent years after admitting he was drinking booze most days and frequently ordering takeaways.

In 2017, the star opened up to The Sun about his decision to lose weight - and shared his tips and tricks for maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

He said: "I made a conscious decision to cut down on fried and high sugar foods, as well as booze which helped me lose weight.

They are lovable in a larky, Ant & Dec way, and not frightening in an about-to-get-kneecapped-with-a-pool-cue-for-asking-to-use-the-toilets-in-a-strictly-bikers-only-pub, Sons of Anarchy way. And they like their grub. Boy, do they like their grub. Best served by the trough-full and as physically close to a park as possible.

The HBs first appeared on our screens in 2004 in The Hairy Bikers Cookbook, where Si and Dave two-wheeled around the world, only stopping to stuff their faces with whatever the local cuisine had to offer. Nothing was off-menu, from crocodile satay in Namibia to goat penis in Vietnam (yum). The boys lapped it up. If theyd run it over, theyd probably have had it for lunch in a baguette. The Hairy Bikers Food Tour of Britain saw them scoff their way from Lands End to John O Groats, pitting their culinary skills against local chefs, and rustling up Lincolnshire plum breads, Norfolk dumplings and Welsh black beef wellingtons. In Best of British, the duo crammed their cakeholes with the history behind traditional British cuisine, from steak and kidney puddings to faggots and spotted dick. In Mums Know Best, they ding-dong! gatecrashed families trying to eat their tea to half-inch mothers top-secret recipes for paella, pavlova and mulligatawny soup.

Their recipes such as Shropshire Fidget and Sultans Delight may have sounded more like definitions from Roger Mellies Profanisaurus than food. On a difficulty rating of Ainsley to Heston, the Bikers happily sit around the Tim Lovejoy mark, ie about the level of your mate whos much better at cooking than you. Then, in August 2012, all hell broke loose. After one too many mud pies in Mississippi Adventure they returned in Hairy Dieters: How to Love Food and Lose Weight. The lads have kept the weight off through Hairy Bikers Asian Adventure, Mediterranean Adventure and Route 66, but watching them politely turn down that third chocolate brownie isnt the same. If music be the food of love, play on, wrote Shakespeare. What Shakespeare doesnt mention is that dieting can turn you into an eternal bore.

Wyoming woman recognized statewide

The nonprofit weight-loss support organization Take Off Pounds Sensibly crowned a woman from Wyoming as Delaware Queen for losing more weight than any other female TOPS member in the state.

Joan Duphily lost 45.25 pounds and attributes her weight loss success to the support she receives from her fellow TOPS members, portion control and regular exercise. She started the program as a way to lose weight before a total knee replacement surgery and continued through recovery.

"I cannot thank my TOPS support group enough for all the encouragement they've given me," she said. "Because of this, I will continue to go every week and will be able to keep the weight off the rest of my life.

Delaware tips the scales as the 23rd heaviest state in the U.S., where 31.8% of adults are affected by obesity. TOPS offers an individual approach to weight loss and overall wellness. Consistent group support, health education and recognition are all key components to successful weight management, a representative said.

We are so gratified by our TOPS members amazing weight-loss accomplishments, President Rick Danforth said. Commemorating their life-changing achievements is an essential component of TOPS winning formula, whether by losing weight or maintaining goals.

Talking to yourself in the third person can promote healthier eating – University of Michigan News

ANN ARBORThe constant temptation of tasty foods high in calories and fat make it difficult for people to make healthy choices, but talking to yourself in the third person may help, say researchers at the University of Michigan and University of Minnesota.

A new study published in Clinical Psychological Science finds that a technique known as distanced self-talk, which refers to an internal dialog using ones name or non-first-person pronouns such as you, he or she, is an effective strategy for making healthier food choices.

Reflecting on ones decisions using ones own name might enhance ones ability to follow through with their goals, which can often be undermined by strong situational lures (such as tempting foods), said study lead author Celina Furman, a former University of Michigan researcher who is now a doctoral student at the University of Minnesota.

Furman and University of Michigan researchers Ethan Kross and Ashley Gearhardt found that psychological distance facilitates self-control by shifting peoples focus away from the highly arousing features of a stimulus.

For example, a piece of chocolate cake can be viewed as highly delicious, but a distanced perspective may lead one to pay attention to abstract features relevant to health goals, such as its high-calorie content.

In the study, young adults disclosed if they were currently dieting or trying to lose weight. They were randomly assigned to watch a two-minute video of health-related commercials that emphasized eating healthy and exercising (health video) or home improvement commercials (control video).

After watching the video, the participants chose between healthy and unhealthy food items on a computer screen. For each pair of foods, participants were instructed to use either first-person self-talk (What do I want?) or distanced self-talk ([Name], what do you want?) in a counterbalanced order.

Among the findings:

Since people are regularly confronted with cheap and accessible tasty foods, self-control strategies that are easy to implement when encountering these foods are more likely to be effective for improving dietary choices, said Kross, a professor of psychology who has extensively researched distanced self-talk.

The researchers said making minor changes in eating can make a difference in peoples lives.

We do know that even reducing caloric intake by a couple hundred calories a day can be important for preventing unhealthy weight gain and promoting weight loss, said Gearhardt, an associate professor of psychology. We need to do additional studies in the future about the impact of distanced self-talk on actual caloric intake, but even small improvements can lead to big public health gains over time.
