Good ‘n Healthy: Fitness What does it actually mean? – The Daily Nonpareil

There are a lot of different ways to become fit. Playing sports, practicing martial arts, bodybuilding, powerlifting, Olympic-style weightlifting, triathlons (swimming, biking and running), CrossFit, group X classes, and yoga.
These are just a few forms that are currently practiced, and they all seem to have a different spin on what it actually means to be fit.
First and foremost, I enjoy and appreciate all the fitness programs listed above. Secondly, I believe we have to look at fitness from a human capacity perspective and recognize what the body is capable of doing and how it responds to certain physical bouts to create and sustain human health for the long term.
When you start your fitness journey, you move more and you see results. This is a very common thing, because the answer to becoming a fitter version of yourself is not that complicated: Move more, eat real food and create an active lifestyle that supports your spiritual, physical, intellectual, social, and emotional health.
For this article I am going to specifically address what the human body can physically do and what aspects to be thinking about when you are going through your fitness journey.
Here are the best 100 words to live by when you are trying to figure out how to become a fitter version of yourself:
Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.
Practice and train major lifts: deadlifts, clean, squat, presses, clean-and-jerk and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climbs, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstands, pirouettes, flips, splits and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc. hard and fast.
Five or six days per week, mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense.
Regularly learn and play new sports. Greg Glassman, Co-Founder of CrossFit
If you follow these 100 words you are going to end up with a substantial amount of fitness. At my gym, when I assess my members, I am looking for holes in their fitness that relate to these words. Most importantly, I look for flaws within the 10 General Physical Skills:
1. Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance The ability of body systems to gather, process and deliver oxygen.
2. Stamina The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store and utilize energy.
3. Strength The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
4. Flexibility The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint
5. Power The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.
6. Speed The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
7. Coordination The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.
8. Agility The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
9. Balance The ability to control the placement of the bodys center of gravity in relation to its support base.
10. Accuracy The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.
Each one of these recognized skills is developed through training. The training methodology that you do will develop these skills in various ways. Powerlifters focus on speed, power and strength. The triathlete and marathon runner focus on cardiovascular/respiratory endurance and stamina, both of which can help create a fitter version of yourself. In the sense of a more holistic approach, training should involve every aspect of these 10 general skills to some capacity.
Strength and endurance seem to be the primary focus of most fitness mythologies. Both, when isolated, have their health downfalls. When strength is the primary focus, cardiovascular/respiratory endurance (heart health) suffers. This is also true vice versa. These two fitness skills should be, and are, important together.
For an example: A middle-aged female who runs and trains for the Boston Marathon has extreme levels of endurance and stamina but lacks measures of strength, flexibility and power. The lack of strength decreases muscle/bone mass, which puts her at more risk of falls and bone disease later in life.
The middle-aged male who trains and competes in powerlifting meets has great strength, power and speed but lacks endurance, coordination and stamina. The lack of endurance and stamina puts him at risk of heart disease and potentially being overweight.
The important part about the physical journey is that you start somewhere. Moving more is going to be a better solution most of the time. When you develop more consistency in your fitness regime, then start to add more components in it that you may be lacking.
This is a continual process that really has no end. That is the fun part. Mix things up and be as creative as possible. If you dont know how to perform a lift or a gymnastic movement, reach out to a local expert to learn these skills so you can properly perform them safely, efficiently and effectively.
Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own. Bruce Lee

MUNCIE, Ind. As state governments across the United States and nations around the world have grappled with what decisions to make when it comes to handling coronavirus concerns, so, too, have fitness centers in and around Muncie.
Whether its been the YMCA of Muncie or Ball States Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Planet Fitness or Muncie CrossFit at The Arsenal, or the Henry County YMCA, each operation has had to address if theyd remain open or temporarily close. Some are still available to their patrons and some arent, at least not on site. And even with the decisions that have already been made, each organization is continuing to monitor the situation COVID-19 is presenting.

Day-by-day, or even hour-by-hour, new information could arise.
As of Monday, the YMCA of Muncie had already closed its downtown and Yorktown locations until March 29. Child Watch at the remaining Northwest location had been made unavailable until the same date, as had group exercise classes. But by Tuesday at 8 p.m. the reality changed again.
For the safety of all members of our community ALL YMCA membership branches will be CLOSED effective today, 3/17/20 at 8 PM until further notice, read a statement on the YMCA of Muncies website. We thank you for your patience in this time of uncertainty. Look for future communications regarding membership options soon. We hope that this passes soon and are looking forward to seeing you upon reopening. In the meantime, stay tuned for updates as new information arrives.
By Wednesday morning, each location sported a sign on one of its entry doors reiterating that point, apologizing for any inconvenience and thanking everyone for their patience. No cars sat in the parking lot at the Northwest building, while a lone truck was parked outside the one in Yorktown and a couple cars were alongside the structure downtown.
However, on the YMCA of Muncie website there is access to online group exercise classes.
The Henry County YMCA in New Castle remained open until Wednesday, when it announced it would close at the end of the day for two weeks, through April 1.

The parking lot in front of Muncies Planet Fitness club sat mostly empty Wednesday just before noon, and for good reason.
On Monday the senior vice president for communications for Planet Fitness, McCall Gosselin, outlined in a statement to The Star Press what the organization was doing to provide a clean and welcoming workout environment that held the health of its members, team members and neighbors as a top priority. Gosselin discussed Planet Fitness procedures, which included regular overnight cleaning and team members regularly using disinfectant cleaning supplies on all equipment, surfaces and areas possible. By Tuesday, a change had been made.
Dear Valued Members, The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and its impact on our members, team members, and communities is unprecedented and changing rapidly, read a notification at the Muncie locations entry. The health and well-being of our Planet Fitness Family is, and has always been, our #1 priority. As a result, out of an abundance of caution, the club will be temporarily closed effective March 17th for two weeks through March 31st. We continue to monitor the situation closely and will reopen as soon as permitted. Your health and well-being is our top priority. We appreciate your support and shared efforts to help keep our community strong and healthy! Thank you, Club Management.
Gosselin had said in his statement they were going to continue to monitor the situation.

There were some, but not many, people scattered about the Jo Ann Gora Student Recreation and Wellness Center on Ball States campus Wednesday afternoon. Whether they were playing basketball or using one of the machines, members of the campus community continued to use the facility that, at least for the time being, wasnt temporarily closing.
However, that doesnt mean no steps have been taken.
BSU said its Recreation Services has posted signs about wiping down the fitness equipment before and after somethings used. That, in addition to asking for IDs to be shown rather than swiped, canceling intramural sports, suspending sport club activities, closing the climbing wall to clean it and canceling any five-on-five, one-on-one or group competitions on the basketball courts. And BSU said an efforts been made by Sports Facilities and Recreation Services to instruct their all staff on why its important to clean and clean often.
The guidelines were issued in response to Indiana Governor Eric Holcombs, which included limiting gatherings to no more than 50 people. They also include BSU Rec Fit classes functioning with proper social distancing, no equipment sharing and the cleaning of equipment after classes.
Ball State could modify hours and operations if additional information and guidance leads it to that decision.

As a class with about 10 people, including staff, began at the facility Wednesday at about noon, owner and coach BJ McKay told The Star Pressthat how his organization plansto move forward had yet to be determined, although headded there would be a meeting that afternoon to discuss next steps.
McKay is still attempting to absorb as much information as he can and as many recommendations from local authorities, the state, CDC and others as possible. Hes gathering facts about what individuals can do to mitigate concerns that arise. Hes acting with an understanding of how fluid the situation is.
All of our members have the option to come, not come, McKay said. They have the option to say, Hey, we want to wait for a while. And we encourage them to make those choices for themselves.
Options such as online and virtual training, private coaching for individuals and families that limits the number of people in the facility at one time and more are being considered and could be taken up after the Wednesday meeting. McKay wants to be able to accommodate anyone whos at risk of being affected most by the coronavirus.
And theyre already sanitizing every possible surface that is touched, from the equipment to the door handles to the markers use to write down workouts, in addition to having coaches ensure social distancing is being practiced.
Its been a pain, but its been the right thing to do going above and beyond there, McKay said. I mean, for the flu let alone the coronavirus.
The tight-knit community McKay believes is there is seen by McKay as a bonus, too, both because the class sizes wont go against established guidelines and those who attend are already people McKay knows act appropriately when it comes to their health.
Economically, the outlook is pretty bleak if too many memberships are paused or canceled amid coronavirus concerns. Muncie CrossFit at The Arsenal is not too expansive of an operation to withstand that. But above all McKay is committed to making decisions if the information he gathers leads him in that direction. If theres a verified COVID-19 case in the area or spread that determines it wouldnt be wise to continue to have the facility open it may temporarily close.
Could we do it? Sure, McKay said. Thats definitely on the table and first and foremost its thinking about our members, their health. What is the right thing to do? And the folks, by the way, the folks and the facilities that choose to close, for them they decided thats the right decision and I cant fault them for it.

As local businesses struggle to adjust to the impact of COVID-19 guidelines and closures this week, gyms around the North Shore have been forced to either close their doors entirely or drastically change their day-to-day operations.
Initially, the YMCA of Metro North had planned to close only its fitness centers while continuing to provide daily child care programs. But as of a statement released Wednesday by President and CEO Kathleen Walsh, all Metro North YMCAs including Lynn, Saugus and Torigian (Peabody) will be closing all facilities and programs until April 6.
This is an extraordinarily challenging time; unlike anything we have experienced, the statement said. Our Y community is strong and connected. We will get through this together. And when we emerge from this challenging moment, we look forward to welcoming you and your families back through our doors.
The YMCA will release information on how to stay healthy, including videos of workouts and tips online.
Local gyms like Planet Fitness and Boston Sports Clubs have also followed suit after the state-mandated containment efforts announced this week. Both gyms have shut down their facilities indefinitely since Monday while awaiting further guidance by the state.
In a statement made by its CEO, Planet Fitness will not charge for the time period its clubs are closed.
But some small businesses havent had the option to close entirely.
This is usually one of the busiest times of the year at Salem Fitness Center, but the gym has taken a big hit, said owner Michael Reyes.
This is usually a busier time of the year in terms of people signing up and new members in the gym, Reyes said. But its been really down.
Salem Fitness Center hasnt shut down its facility located on Swampscott Road in Salem entirely, but Reyes and his staff have had to drastically change their policies.
Weve been focusing on ways to service our members without having to close, Reyes said. A lot of places are closing their services but still charging people for their membership. But thats just not how we do business.
Weve limited the amount of people that are allowed inside at one time, Reyes said. And weve also limited the time they can stay. That amount of time is one hour.
Salem, along with the YMCA, has also started to offer online workout videos and suggestions on its websites and social media.
Daily were offering some small workouts online, Reyes said. Its just workouts for home but were not charging anything for them. Its just a free option for people at this time.
Its less than ideal for Salem Fitness Center, which offers several membership plans, but its a better option than putting his staff out of work, Reyes said.
We have over 30 people on our staff here, Reyes said. And weve really had to focus on keeping them paid, so they can feed themselves and their families.
As long as we can well continue doing it, Reyes said. Obviously right now there needs to be some serious consideration for small businesses in the area.

Wyze will launch its smart scale and fitness tracking band on Tuesday – Android Police

Wyze, the company known for making affordable smart home products, was rumored to be working on a fitness tracking bandand a smart scale. The company confirmed this information and released further details on their availability last month, hinting these devices were almost ready to hit the market. We now know they will be available for early access buyers on Tuesday.
The Wyze Band is a fitness tracker that's also designed to help you control your smart home devices. In addition to the usual step, sleep, and heart rate tracking, it will come with Alexa built-in and let you operate Wyze devices with just a tap. It'll also allow you to set alarms and access your calendar directly from your wrist. We also know the band will feature a color display with customizable watch faces and the ability to replicate your phone's notifications.
As for the scale, it's a relatively standard one that can measure your weight, body fat %, lean body mass, heart rate, and eight other essential metrics. It will be able to recognize up to eight different people, allowing to track the entire family's measurements. It will run off four AAA batteries and connect to your phone using Bluetooth, which is a bit of a disappointment for a product launching in 2020.
Both devices will start selling through "early access" orders beginning Tuesday, March 24, at 9:00 AM PST on Wyze.com. Unfortunately, their price and estimated shipping date haven't been confirmed yet.

Manager Peter Vermes talks MLS suspension and player fitness on 610 Sports Radio – Sporting Kansas City

Less than 24 hours after Major League Soccer announced the suspension of its 2020 season until May 10 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes joined 610 Sports Radio to discuss the unprecedented situation with hosts Josh Klingler and Bob Fescoe.
With Sporting players being instructed to stay active from home, one of Vermes' biggest priorities on the managerial side is making sure his team is doing everything possible to stay safe, healthy and relatively fit. For the last week, Sporting has observed Major League Soccer's training moratorium that prohibits squads from practicing together. As a result, players have embarked on their own individual training programs from home.
Listen to the full podcast above and see Vermes' remarks below.
On Major League Soccers targeted return date of May 10
I try to be a positive guy, so Im hopeful like most others that things will get back to normalcy as soon as possible. At least its some positive news in the short term. Staff and players are just waiting for the opportunity. Its difficult for the staff as well, not just the players, because were together so much when the season is up and running. For everyone to all of the sudden be cut off from everybody elsethey can get on phone calls and Skype each otherbut outside of that, the everyday routine is gone. Everyone is looking to get back to that routine as soon as possible, and (hopefully) it happens sooner rather than later.
On how he has spent most of his time during the suspension
Its hard because weve only played two games of the season. I watch a ton of games during the week leading up to each weekend. So watching all of the games during the first two weeks of the season is over with. When teams come back, its going to be very difficult for teams to get back to the same level they were playing at in those first two games. What Ive done is watched our first two games, learned a few things about us for when we do come back, and with a couple of our staff members Im making contingency plans on different start dates in terms of when our first game back would be. Were trying to look at a one-week lead-up, a two-week lead-up, three weeks or whatever. Im trying to put together a plan for all of those things.
The other thing you can do is look at players for the future to (bring into) the club. Thats one thing that can be difficult during the season, and obviously our player personnel department spends a lot of time on that. Me and the rest of the coaching staff likes to look at prospective players as well, so its something that weve been able to do a little bit more now since we have this time.
On the challenge of keeping players fit as they train individually from home
A lot of guys have been doing stuff on their own in a safe environment. Maybe they go for a run (by themselves) or go to a field where no one else is at and work on some of their fitness. If they can maintain some of that base that they created, I would say (they can stay fit). To me, the fitness is the most important aspect. I feel confident in getting the team back from the soccer side, but with the fitness you have to put the time in. Thats the piece to me that is always the most concerning. Its the same when guys are coming back from long-term injuriesnot rushing them back and trying to get them a good base. That to me is the foundation of a successful season for a player and a team.
On how long the team will need to be fully prepared for a match once full training resumes
I personally think youd need somewhere in the neighborhood of three to four weeks. And again, thats with the guys having done stuff up until that point, which I think most of our players are trying to do. I think theyre going stir-crazy to be honest with you, so theyre trying to do some stuffwhether they have a peloton in their house and theyre riding that to keep their fitness up. The tough thing about soccer is, if youre not able to do it every day like you are during the season, when you first come back, the first week is always tough. In soccer, youre cutting and changing direction and contracting your muscles. When you first come back, you get general soccer soreness. When the players come back, they usually need about a week to get over that piece. From a fitness perspective and overall soccer point of view, I think you need three to four weeks in minimum terms.
On the process of gathering information from MLS and the CDC
Part of my day is conference calls and staying up to date with the league. MLS has been incredibly informative, and we have our own internal task force with Sporting. The communication has been tremendous, and staying up to date with all of this (information) changes really quickly. You have to be really nimble and flexible to roll with it. Organizationally, I think weve done that pretty well. Our fans have been great from that point of view, too. Our players are hanging on the edge of their seats because (soccer) is what they do, and they want to do it. But they also understand the community responsibility they have. Right now were just all trying to follow the rules of the CDC and all of the other people were speaking with at the moment.
On Sportings strong start to the season with consecutive wins
I was very happy with the team, and it goes back to the commitment of the players who returned to the team and the new guys that came in. Their commitment to the physical aspects of what we focused on in preseasonand the preparation that everyone put in during the offseasonwas tremendous. It really helped is get into our model of play very quickly. I also cant commend our new players enough on how fast they have been able to adapt, adjust and fit into the way that we play. Weve used the qualities and assets that they have to not only fit in but enhance the team from a performance and results point of view.

Are Options Traders Betting on a Big Move in Planet Fitness (PLNT) Stock? – Yahoo Finance

Investors in Planet Fitness, Inc. PLNT need to pay close attention to the stock based on moves in the options market lately. That is because the Apr 17, 2020 $22.50 Put had some of the highest implied volatility of all equity options today.
What is Implied Volatility?
Implied volatility shows how much movement the market is expecting in the future. Options with high levels of implied volatility suggest that investors in the underlying stocks are expecting a big move in one direction or the other. It could also mean there is an event coming up soon that may cause a big rally or a huge sell-off. However, implied volatility is only one piece of the puzzle when putting together an options trading strategy.
What do the Analysts Think?
Clearly, options traders are pricing in a big move for Planet Fitness shares, but what is the fundamental picture for the company? Currently, Planet Fitness is a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) in the Leisure and Recreation Services industry that ranks in the Top 44% of our Zacks Industry Rank. Over the last 30 days, no analyst has increased the earnings estimate for the current quarter, while five have revised the estimates downward. The net effect has taken our Zacks Consensus Estimate for the current quarter from 42 cents per share to 41 cents in that period.
Given the way analysts feel about Planet Fitness right now, this huge implied volatility could mean theres a trade developing. Oftentimes, options traders look for options with high levels of implied volatility to sell premium. This is a strategy many seasoned traders use because it captures decay. At expiration, the hope for these traders is that the underlying stock does not move as much as originally expected.

Denver fitness companies working hard to keep up with demand after gyms forced to close down – The Denver Channel
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
DENVER Right off of I-25 in North Denver, a line of cars sat idling outside of a warehouse this week. One by one, the drivers pull up to a garage door and wait for warehouse employees to load heavy cardboard boxes into their cars.
Rep Fitness has been busy over the past few days trying to fill the orders of customers trying to get their hands on some workout equipment.
The company, which was started in 2012, is owned by two brothers, Ryan and Shane McGrotty. Their home gym supplies run the gambit from a few dollars to a few thousand depending on what youre looking for.
We all know Colorado is the fittest state in the country and so people really do enjoy coming into the store, Ryan McGrotty said.
The mad dash for home gym equipment started after Governor Jared Polis announced that he was forcing gyms across the state to close down.
Its been pretty crazy, said Ryan McGrotty. We basically had a nonstop line of cars in the back waiting to load up.
Balancing the new demand with the need to keep employees safe and healthy can be difficult for any company, as the state tells people to work from home and practice social distancing in the wake of the spread of the coronavirus.
Coronavirus in Colorado: Latest COVID-19 updates across the state
For now, Rep Fitness has some employees working from home, closed off its showroom to the public, is cleaning more frequently and even installed door kicks around the warehouse so employees wont have to use their hands as often to open doors. Its also not making customers sign off on their orders to minimize contact and bringing the orders right out to the clients car.
Its definitely a unique situation but we try to adapt. Our team has really been coming together to try to support the community, said Shane McGrotty.
The brothers say they are doing whatever they can to keep their business going and fill orders because they understand how important it is for people to be able to work out to keep their immune systems healthy.
However, exercise is also important for mental health, particularly during stressful times like the one we're all experiencing right now.
In order to kind of cope with that new stress and those changes, its a good idea to keep up with a healthy living routine through some sort of physical exercise, said Brian Gearity, the director of the Masters in the Arts Sports Coaching Program at the University of Denver. Theres more and more research studies looking at how physical exercise reduces anxiety and depression.
Gearity said hes never seen anything as wide-reaching as these closures, and its causing a lot of people to try to find other ways to stay active.
Not only are big gyms like Planet Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness and others closed down, but even apartments and neighborhoods are closing off access to their equipment.
Its pretty frustrating when youre trying to be active and fit and youre supposed to take care of yourself, but the options to take care of yourself are pretty limited right now, he said.
But as thousands of Coloradans face reduced work hours or layoffs, not everyone can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on new gym equipment.
Gearity worries that people facing financial hardship will not be able to take care of their physical health as easily as those with a more stable income.
Still, hes encouraging people to try to get 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity a day and to make sure that they are not overconsuming calories when they are working from home and anxious about everything thats happening.
The Denver-based Gibson Athletic/Rage Fitness, meanwhile, announced that it is giving away $70,000 worth of workout equipment at its Denver location Wednesday and Thursday to help people stay fit.
Online, there are hundreds of videos on everything from yoga to Zumba to cycling to give people ideas on how to get a good workout without breaking the bank.
Other activities like walking, hiking or climbing stairs are also good ways to get in some cardio without requiring expensive equipment.
However, some outdoor activities like the Manitou Incline have been temporarily closed due to coronavirus concerns.
Back at Rep Fitness, Shane McGrotty, said you dont have to spend a lot of money to stay active.
You dont need to have the best home gym or garage gym on the block to get a good workout in. Its just a matter of having a sandbag, a jump rope and a couple dumbbells and you can do a ton of workouts, he said.
In the end, Shane McGrotty, who majored in psychology, believes the most important thing for people to do is to stay motivated and keep moving for their physical and mental health.
During these times when theres a lot of anxiety going on and people are just anxious physical fitness at home really makes it so that your mental health is in a lot better position, he said.

While schools and other functions with large gatherings are shutting down over concerns of the spread of the COVID-19 virus, some fitness facilities in Columbus are staying open but with precautions and some limitations.
Total Fitness on the citys north side is posting pre-recorded workouts online that people can do at home. The gym is still open, but indoor cycling classes and drop-in daycare have been suspended.
Tipton Lakes Athletic Club on the citys west side is open, but has canceled all on-site classes, including tennis, fitness, Pilates and karate classes. All money transactions for the time being will be done by credit card only, with no cash.
Anytime Fitness on National Road also is open, but has stopped classes and is doing at-home virtual coaching.
"Were definitely following local health officials, whatever guidance they give us," Anytime Fitness owner Tim Arnold said. "We actually have reached out to them proactively and are communicating with them to make sure that were doing what we need to do as far as keeping our gym open vs. closing it."
Tipton Lakes general manager and tennis pro Mary Beth Wilson said the club is allowing tennis pros to provide private lessons and trainers to do personal training. All "Healthy U" classes, including yoga, is being done online. Tennis and pickleball courts are open, although pickleball is being limited to four people per court.
Wilson said someone on the staff is cleaning and sanitizing the gym and entire club every day. Tipton Lakes is providing wipes and spray bottles with cleaner and are asking members to wipe down their equipment before and after use.
"Our gym is pretty open, so its pretty easy for people to keep distances from each other," Wilson said. "Were asking people not to be on equipment next to each other. Were just asking people to wash things down after they use them."
Meanwhile, Total Fitness has posted guidelines on its Facebook page:
1. Wash your hands before, during and after your workout.
2. Bring a bath size towel with you to place over equipment during use to lessen your chances of contracting any illness.
3. Bring your own hand sanitizer with you.
4. Do not touch your face.
5. If you feel unwell, STAY HOME!
"Rest assured we do have chemicals that are used in cleaning that kill the virus as well as many other germs that are used multiple times per day," reads a statement on the Total Fitness Facebook page.
With Bartholomew County schools closed and spring sports practices canceled for at least another two weeks, the workout facilities are bracing for an influx of students and athletes when they return from spring break this weekend.
"We are trying to help our employees and our staff as much as possible," Wilson said. "As a community, were trying to support each other and get through this together."

Like many fitness centers, Swagler says his will adapt to the circumstances.
"I like to think our gym isn't closing," Swagler said. "We're just changing what it looks like."
The plan is to offer online workouts and to host off-site workouts in public areas limiting attendance to 9-10 people. Online workouts started posting Tuesday on the gym's YouTube channel. There are also plans to start a running group a few times a week, as well as various fitness challenges.
Members are communicating through an app called "Beyond the White Board."
On Tuesday, Swagler also invited members to stop by and borrow gym equipment to take home while the facility is unavailable.
"That's not something I think most places would offer," Swagler said. "We're trying to accommodate as much as possible to keep our business going, so we don't just close up and say, 'Nope, you're out of luck.' We want to keep our business moving in the right direction. It might just look a little different than it did a week ago."
The Auburn YMCA is also utilizing social media to connect with members. Nucerino and his staff have been in contact with other YMCAs around the country and in New York state, developing plans on how to approach the coming weeks or months.
On its website, Auburn has launched the Virtual Y page, which features links to YouTube for workout videos. There's also links to youth activities that parents can use to keep their children occupied.

How to maintain marathon fitness when your race has been postponed – Runner’s World (UK)

If your spring marathon has now become an autumn marathon, you may be worried that your hard-earned fitness will now slip away. However, Lewis Moses of New Levels Coaching says that, with the right attitude and a little imagination, the coming months can help you to become an even better runner.
First off, respect the guidelines set out by Public Health England. Fortunately for runners, one of these guidelines is that we should stay active, so were in quite a privileged position. Staying fit and health for body and mind is essential. Right now, running is one thing you can control, so hold on to that.
Its about maintaining the work youve done without overdoing it. Its about continuing to work quite hard without putting yourself in a hole research suggests that over-training can suppress the immune system.
Keep the long run, but drop the volume of it. If you keep knocking out 20-22-mile runs, you risk overdoing things. If youre the type who does an interval session, a tempo run and a long run, consider dropping either the interval or tempo session. Think about doing just one tough workout a week, alongside easy running and a long run.
This is a good time to work on your weaknesses. During your marathon training, where werent you quite as strong as you hoped youd be? Did you pick up any niggles? Now is the perfect time to address those to come back stronger in the autumn.
When people have to rest, most find they come out of that period feeling better than when they went in. The evidence suggests you dont lose any fitness after a 10-day lay-off. People are getting anxious, understandably. But ask yourself this question: have you ever met anyone who became unfit by easy running? You will maintain fitness if youre running.
If we go into lockdown, you must adapt your training. Running conditions the heart and lungs, of course, but they dont know what type of exercise youre doing theyre just getting a workout. So you have to think about how you can work your heart and lungs, and there are loads of ways to do it from skipping to body-weight sessions. These other exercises will also benefit your muscles, bones and tendons.
If you were training for a spring marathon, you were going to taper into the marathon. Actually, you were going to have a very easy spell of training. In effect, you have just been forced into that a little earlier than you wanted.
If you manage to run regularly over the next few months, dont become obsessed with following your previous marathon schedule to the letter. About 12-16 weeks out, think about making your training more marathon-specific. When it comes to the long run, you don't have to go back to the beginning, either. Youve already trained your body to handle longer runs, and that training hasnt been lost.
