Persons with hypothyroidism experience slow metabolism since the thyroid gland is unable to produce thyroid hormones. Its symptoms include weight gain, dry and itchy skin, hair loss, muscle or joint pain, constant tiredness, feeling depressed and unable to concentrate. The most common treatment for this condition includes radiation therapy, medication and surgical removal of the thyroid.

IBS is characterized by bloating, severe abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or constipation, and gas. A person with IBS may experience days when they dont feel the symptoms and may tend to overeat resulting in weight gain. The usual treatment may include medication, counseling, exercise, the use of a natural appetite depressant, and the consumption of high-fiber food like fruits and vegetables.

Dysthymia is a chronic form of depression that may linger for years. The most common symptoms may include sadness, tiredness, loss of interest in daily events, low self-esteem, difficulty in making decisions, irritable, always angry, inability to sleep well, poor appetite or overeating, feelings of guilt and avoidance of any social activity.

The known causes are due to inherited traits or may be due to traumatic life events like financial burdens, loss of a loved one or increased levels of stress. The recommended treatment for the disorder includes medication and psychotherapy.

Women experience menopause when they reach the ages between 45 and 50 years old. During this time their menstrual period stops and the ovaries cease producing the estrogen and progesterone hormones. Unfortunately, some symptoms accompany this condition which may include hot flashes or night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, hair loss, osteoporosis, and insomnia.

Also, because of the hormonal changes, women tend to gain weight, especially in the abdomen area. To alleviate the dire effects, its advisable to maintain a balanced diet, get a healthy lifestyle and pursue physical exercise.

Women are diagnosed with this condition during pregnancy and experience high blood sugar levels, which endanger their health as well as their baby. The usual symptoms include the constant urge to urinate and unexplained bouts of hunger or thirst which could lead to excessive weight gain. Weight loss tips: How to lose weight like this guy who lost 32 kg by making these 2 simple changes in his life – GQ India

I weigh 68 kg now. I lost 32 kg in 7 months by following the below weight loss plan and making simple changes in my daily life.

My earlier diet was full of carbohydrates and sugar. I never exercised. But now, sugar (artificial) is out of my diet. I workout 6 days in the week and also weigh myself every single day in the morning just before I head to the shower.

Weighing myself every single day helped me understand what were the things that I was doing (and eating) correctly and what was not working for me. I held myself accountable if my weight on a given particular day was significantly higher than the previous day's weight - this helped me avoid eating out as well because I knew that if I ate out, the next morning I would see an increased number on the weighing scale. This self-accountability helped me a lot in my journey along with the below workout plan.

I began with gymming for 2.5-3 hours daily. This included 1 hour of walking. I began with slow walks on the treadmill, then slow running, then fast running. This finally led to - 20 minutes running + 40 minutes walk + 20 minutes cycling.

Post this, I did simple weight training and 50 squats, 50 toe-touch and 50 sit-ups. Apart from my cardio and weight training, I usually clock in 17-18000 steps on any given day. So that helps as well!

I began with avoiding artificial sugar. Tea/Coffee were to be consumed without sugar which was too hard in the beginning. Chocolates/pastries/cakes/ice creams/chips/biscuits/soft drinks were totally stopped. I increased the fruit and vegetable content in my food as well. This is what my diet comprised:

Breakfast: I began with having 1 banana, 4-5 blackberries and plain cold milk in the morning followed by coffee without sugar before lunch.

Lunch: One bowl of yogurt, salad, 2 chapatis and 1.5 cups of protein like dal/soybean vegetable.

Dinner: Salad or sandwich.

Self-accountability is crucial. Also, while having a cheat meal, the only person being cheated is YOU. A cheat meal can spoil the entire week's efforts. So try and avoid cheat meals as much as you can. Push yourself and you will reach your goal.

Weight loss: Woman sheds 5 stone in 5 months & reversed type 2 diabetes with simple diet – Express

A weight-loss journey can be motivated by many things, but after struggling with her weight for most of her life and being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, one woman lost an incredible five stone four pounds by overhauling her lifestyle and following a simple diet plan.

60-year-old Carolyn Jarrett is no longer struggling with her weight after losing over five stone in five months using a simple diet plan, but best of all, after embarking on her weight loss journey she managed to reverse her type 2 diabetes.

‘I’m Working Out But Not Losing Weight; What’s Wrong?’ – VICE UK

Hey,

So I will just jump right in. I am pretty weight conscious (yes, I know this is a mistake).

I recently came back from assisting with the bushfires and I was only doing cardio, and I had put on a kilo or two.

I was upset, and immediately jumped into smashing myself at the gym with the body attack program by Les Mils.

I generally train 6 days a week and watch my calories pretty intensely.

Anyway, I have found that I am just feeling bloated or heavy around my stomach and my legs. Even though I have been training a lot with the body attack and monitoring my calories and drinking lots of water, I am holding onto the weight. Im frustrated and unsure what to do, is it possible to retain fluid from resistance training? Is there something I am missing here?

Looking for some advice. - RJ

I cant count how many times I found myself in this same position. I finally got up the motivation to start working out, dragged my entire self to the gym, spent 30 precious minutes of my time using the treadmill or stationary bike and nervously doing a few moves on the weight machines, only to return to the body-weight scale at home later that night or after a few days of this routine only to discover I had actually gained a few pounds. What was the point of all this, if it didnt even do anything, and by do anything I mean make me smaller and more attractive?

According to every piece of content Id ever seen about exercise and dieting, it was fair, and even reasonable, to expect FAST results. If there were so many programs out there that promised losing lots of pounds inside of a week, surely doing my best to go to the gym and work up a sweat working even harder than those fat-blasting workouts seemed to ask of me should have done even more to help me lose weight. When this not only didnt help but seemed to make things actively worse, I inevitably would throw the whole idea in the trash and move on without exercise, since it seemed to not do anything.

The thing is that I was mistaken about what exercise is for or at least, I was focused on the wrong things and expecting too much. Like many people, I felt incredible pressure to lose weight and be skinny, despite that I was already a healthy weight; if I really need to lose body fat in the interest of my health, a doctor would have told me, and Id never gotten that advice.

Being hyper-focused on weight loss led to me really hating myself, and I developed an antagonistic, destructive relationship with my body; whereas focusing on the benefits of exercise, like getting stronger and feeling more capable and having more energy, allowed me to build a constructive relationship, eat more food, and sleep better.

I know this is not as simple as simply focus on different things for anyone. But we should question weight loss as a culturally valuable pursuit, and try to learn to see our body ideals as toxic and that all of this is part of a shitty rat race to distract us from actually taking care of ourselves and seeing the worlds problems clearly (yes, I have, in fact, read The Beauty Myth).

But even if I had, there are a handful of principles that apply here outside of that that might help you understand whats going on.

A lot of the hype around exercise focuses on calories burned. You see it in MyFitnessPal, in exercise apps, and on cardio machines at the gym. This leads us to see the process as simple math: if a pound is 3500 calories, and the elliptical at the gym says I burn 600 calories in 45 minutes of working out, I should be able to lose a pound in about four days, lose ten pounds in about five weeks, and lose forty pounds in five months.

Unfortunately, the accuracy of those numbers can vary wildly, particularly for cardio machines. For instance, running on a flat treadmill is not the same as running on the ground at the same speed, but the machines calorie counter might make you believe its the same. We also cant simply burn more calories the more we work out. But more importantly, losing body fat requires an overall caloric deficit, meaning what we eat is part of the equation too.

Its not uncommon for a new exercise routine to stimulate peoples appetites and cause them to move less outside of exercise, and even cause weight gain. This extremely does not mean be severe with yourself about food as well as exercise in order to get the results youre looking for. It does mean you probably need some time to adapt to your new habit, and even if losing body fat were the ultimate goal (which, again, is not a decision anyone should undertake on their own because they yearn to look like Karlie Kloss), based on most peoples results, it will be ultimately discouraging to try and double-track starting to form the habit of working out and losing weight.

Obviously exercise can and does cause peoples bodies to change changes just in body composition, or the amount of body fat versus lean muscle mass, without any weight actually lost can make a huge difference in one's appearance. But for me, this happened on a scale of months and years, and only with periods where I was eating substantially more than I ever had in order to help me rebuild muscle Id lost through years of aggressive dieting. But Im also far happier now, some 25 pounds heavier than I was at my smallest. In the darkest time of my disordered eating, I wouldnt have believed that was even possible.

You mention youve been watching your calories, but thats not always a magic bullet, either.

It may surprise many to learn that various junk publications or products pushing diets or programs that promise you will lose ten pounds in five days! do not reflect healthy weight loss, let alone a healthy lifestyle. The book Renaissance Woman, from the nutrition and athletic coaching company Renaissance Periodization, has useful information here along with an example:

Current data suggests that the most productive middle ground for a caloric deficit is one that results in losses of somewhere between 0.5% and 1.0% of bodyweight per week. This means that for a woman that weighs 150lbs, a very good start for a weekly weight loss goal is somewhere between 0.75lbs and 1.5lbs. It doesnt sound like much, but a 12 week diet at this rate (even with a middle value of around 1lb per week) will lead to a bodyweight of around 138lbs.

You will notice, this is a much slower weight than many diet products market in their ads or testimonials. Everyone wants fast results, but fast does not mean healthy or sustainable. There are also a number of negative health effects that go along with trying to lose weight too quickly for too long, including losing muscle mass and screwing up your metabolism and hormones such that your body goes into starvation mode and tries to retain its energy (which is how people dieting for a very long time, even ones who are overweight, can continue to eat a very meager amount of calories and not lose more weight, or even gain weight).

If you actually need to lose weight, there is a right way to do it that a doctor or dietitian can help you with that should never involve starving yourself. While caloric deficits across exercise and food are what produces body fat loss, that never means the more exercise and the less food eaten, the more body fat loss happens.

Exercise, and particularly lifting heavy weights like I love to do and wish more people would do, builds muscles by tearing them up so bodies rebuild them stronger than before with the fuel we give them (food, water, rest). In the short term, muscles respond by holding onto more glycogen (muscle fuel), which also helps them hold more water, in anticipation of the next time you work out. This is a good and biologically necessary thing. But it does mean that, as with the above, it might be several weeks before you adapt.

For this reason, scales are a particularly misleading indicator of progress early on, and its better to try and stay focused on how you feel, and how youre actually doing in the gym (lifting heavier weights? Running faster and farther? But mainly, lifting heavier weights?). When I first started weight training, I found that trying to focus on that constructive cycle of eating and resting so my workouts went well allowed my focus on my appearance to start to fade into the background.

This is a more minor point, but water retention and bloating are real and normal side effects of the hormones that go along with menstruating, and can make several pounds of difference across a month. Renaissance Woman and many other resources that counsel athletes on body fat loss in the interest of health and capability advocate for using body weight as one of many data points progress pictures, for instance, which can be triggering for some, can be another useful data point and help show changes where scales dont. Another data point is how you feel overall!

But any given days body weight can be affected by how much water you drank that day, how much salt or carbs you ate, and even how much stress youre under. For this reason, its better to consider body weight again as a data point across weeks and months, per Renaissance Woman, not day to day, if thats a problem youre facing.

As a more detailed guide for managing body composition and building muscle, I found Renaissance Woman an extremely useful guide if youre interested in learning more of the ins and outs here from a source that is focused on health and function, not aesthetics; I cant recommend it enough, but also cant recommend enough consulting a doctor or dietitian about your concerns, because they know all this as well as far more than I do; all I can do here is provide some scientific reassurance as a fellow woman that all of this is tough and tricky, and reassure you that you deserve far more support and far less personal shame and guilt than you seem you be putting on yourself.

I also want to reassure you that youre much more than, and there is way more to life than, your body weight. Its a complex thing, not the best measurement of health, and the more we all dispassionately think of it as a data point, the better for literally everyone. You fucking fought the bush fires!! Absolute climate change hero! You deserve to feel proud of what your body can do. Like anything, its not an easy journey for any of us, but I hope you can find a way to that feeling.

SQA aims to issue results to pupils by August 4 despite exams being cancelled due to coronavirus outbreak – Strathspey Herald

The SQA will aim to get results out by August 4.

THE Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) is aiming to certify pupil's grades and results by August 4, the chief examiner has revealed.

Fiona Robertson said the SQA is working on an alternative certification model so pupils are recognised for the work that they have done despite the cancellation of this year's exams in response to the coronavirus situation.

The news comes a day after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said schools will close on Friday.

Ms Roberston said: "This is an unprecedented situation, and the closure of schools for an extended period will affect almost every family across Scotland.

"The Scottish Qualifications Authority has recently been working through a range of scenarios in relation to the exam diet, including disruption and postponement.

"However, as the Deputy First Minister has outlined in parliament today, the exam diet in 2020 cannot go ahead and I have been asked by the Deputy First Minister to develop an alternative certification model.

Catching Up with Luchi Gonzalez: How His Team and Staff Are Working Through an Unprecedented Time – FC Dallas

FRISCO, Texas Like everybody in these uncertain times, Luchi Gonzalez and his FC Dallas coaching staff have had to be nimble to navigate through this new, ever-changing situation.

In a conference call with media earlier this week, Luchi shed some light on how the team is doing personally and the steps being taken to maintain health and fitness during the league-wide training moratorium.

Without access to team facilities, the training staff have devised specific workout regimens the players can do from the comfort of their own homes using common household items. This can involve using shoes instead of cones, or books in leu of dumbbells.

Soon, the players will also be given nutrition guides to maintain a balanced diet over the period theyre away.

We do have a nutritionist on the team, Brittney [Bearden], who is working on getting meal plans set up for the players starting next week, Luchi said. Knowing we are currently limited, she will offer suggestions on what we can eat and what we can buy at stores while keeping in mind that going to the store may be an obstacle right now. But she will send a guide for players to follow.

Aside from basic exercises and nutrition plans, Luchi is working with his staff on creative solutions to keep their players prepared and engaged.

In terms of soccer, Im confident in my staff, Peter [Luccin], Mikey [Varas], Drew [Keeshan], Vander [Salas], Fredy [Herrera] and in the rest technical staff around me to come up with ideas to keep our players active and stimulated. We have some creative ideas for both on and off the field, or right now its more inside and outside their homes. We are going to start executing some of these ideas this weekend or first thing next week. This first week, its all about the basics and doing simple things to get into a system. Next week, we will be more confident on how we are going to move forward.

As always, Luchi also made it clear that this situation is bigger than FC Dallas, MLS andsports in general.

"Everyone be strong. Be conscious, and respectful to your neighbor by having distance. If youre helping to do so without physically touching [to stop the spread of the virus]. We are all human beings, we have our rights, and we are all in this together. Together is how we will overcome these situations. Whether youre a 20-year-old with good health or a 60-year-old person, we all have to be respectful of each other and be aware of how the virus spreads and do the right things to protect everyone."

Faced with months of crippling road-closing construction outside her five-year-old bakery in downtown Massillon last year, Jamie Anania decided to take a big plunge.

She used that downtime to convert her Sugar Mamas Bakery at 44 Lincoln Way E into The Root Vegan & GF Cafe, something shed long dreamed about. The cafe, like Ananias own diet, is 100% free of animal products and uses organic produce and non-GMO products.

Here, Anania talks about her food and why it is attracting lots of enthusiastic repeat customers.

Q. Are you surprised by the quick success of your cafe?A. I guess Im a little shocked. I didnt realize there were so many vegan people in Massillon and around this area. Saturdays are usually standing-room only. It was a huge gamble, but when the streets closed and our income went to nothing, I figured its either going to be this or Ill get a job at a factory.

Q. Having eaten at The Root and talked to some customers, it seems like the key is simply making vegan food taste good.A. Everyone always expects vegan to be crunchy, flavorless and kind of blah. I dont think you should have to sacrifice flavor for health when you can have the whole package. People eat with their eyes so it should be beautiful as well as taste good.

Q. You serve things like Reubens and sausage sandwiches that use jackfruit instead of meat. How do you make that work?A. What we do is mimic foods using plant-based options. The jackfruit is a big hit. I use it for turkey, I use it for chicken, I use it in the Reuben. Its very versatile, and like tofu, it will take on the flavors of whatever youre cooking it with. Our BBQ jackfruit wrap is extremely popular, which is a big ol tortilla wrapped with organic greens, sauteed peppers and onions, (dairy-free) cheddar cheese sauce and our homemade Southwestern avocado dressing.

Q. Many vegans seem to miss cheese the most of all. What can you tell me about yours?A. When you first start venturing into the non-dairy world, dairy-free cheese can turn people off real fast because thats their one vice. We kind of just ventured into using different products and altering our recipes to come up with the perfect creaminess of cheese without dairy, lactose and hormones. We make our loaded fries, chili fries and nachos with plant-based cheese sauce. Its a cleaner version of naughty food.

Q. Do you have non-vegan customers?A. Weve had quite a few people who are not vegan come in to try it out and they find out they dont miss meat. Some people are just trying to clean up their diet. Some people appreciate diversity in food.

Worried about gaining weight during coronavirus isolation? – The Beet

The New York Post calls it the Quarantine 15. As insensitive as it sounds to worry about gaining weight while working from home when people are getting sick andare worried about loved ones, it's our responsibility to stay strong and healthy, to take care of others. And part of being healthy is choosing healthy foods, exercising, andnot stress-eating our way through this crisis.

If mynumber of trips to the kitchen is any indication,15 is the least of what I'm likely to gain. I literally have not stopped eating since I moved my work to my home last week. Breakfast generally starts out okay,of a little granola and almond milk (unsweetened) but then by mid-morning I am pulling out the chips, leftover (plant-based) pasta with Gardein crumbles, vegan party mix, and before I know it I've eaten the equivalent of four or five meals before 4 p.m.

What? How did I let this happen? Every day I resolve to do better, make a healthy protein-packed, green and berry smoothie, and I start out feeling like I have the best of intentions. And every day, whether on conference calls or just sittingwriting and editing, answering emails or straightening up (I do a lot of that), I find myself traipsing back to the cupboard, looking for something healthy, reaching for something carb-ladenlikethe bag oftortilla chips that never seems to go into the garbage. Salty, stale and crunchy, they hit the spot.

For help in this situation (I can't even blame stress eating, since I think it's more "bored eating" I sent a plaintive missive asking for "help" to my new favorite diet doctor, Dr. Jason, Fung, MD, anephrologist (kidney specialist) and one of the world's leading Intermittent Fasting experts, who has written three best-selling health books and founder of The Fasting Method. His newest book, Life in the Fasting Lane,co-authored with Eve Mayer and Megan Ramos, tells you everything you need to know to use this technique to get to and maintain a healthy weight and stay energized.

Dr. Fung's first interview with The Beethad put me on the right track. I started eating during a window between about 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and then not eating for the other 16 hours on the clock. This method helped me slim down, fit into my jeans better and find myself with more energy and focus. I don't weigh myself but I can always tell how my maintenance plan is doing by how myclothing fits.

The Intermittent Fasting method helped me fit into my jeans better, without craving junk foodand this way of eating lets me feel like I was in total control of my body, my diet, and my health. I have never been a keto dieter, but IF is the most searched term of the past year, so it's safe to say more people are using IF, either with or without their keto approach, because it works.

Then, I put myself on what feels like house arrest. It's isolating and food is small comfort. So is babysitting my brother's snuggly Italian Sheep Dog, Bonnie. She actually creates a distraction and keeps me calm and less bored, so I end up eating less when I am watching her, which would be my tip. Dog sit!

Yesterday I did not exit out of myfour rooms all day. Which meant more time to circle past the kitchen and pantry for snacks. So here is what Dr. Fung has to share. And what I share with you. The idea is to put me back on track and help you avoid the inevitable desire to eat our way through the lockdown.

1. Drink Tea, and lots of it!"I've been self-isolating and drinking lots of tea. The antioxidants in green tea may suppress the appetite, but it gives me something to 'do' instead of eating. I've replaced a bad habit with a harmless habit. I have gone back to drinking tea like an Asian, which is to brew a pot of tea and keep sipping it throughout the day."

"When it is finished, I simply add more hot water to the tea leaves. I use a cup with a lid that keeps the tea hot. This is actually what I used to do as a student, when I spent many hours in my room studying, and the way my parents drink tea. I've also been changing up tea flavors every now and then. Pique Tea has some great fasting teas (I helped them develop them) with flavors like Bergamot Green and Cinnamon."

2. Stay busy."The key question to ask yourself is this: Are you hungry or are you just bored? Most of the time, we are simply bored, and that has us scrounging around the kitchen for lack of something to do. I bought myself a paint by numbers kit (surprisingly relaxing) and downloaded two ebooks from the library. I subscribed tochess.comand decided that I would try to learn the game, which I've always meant to do, but never had time for. I've also decided to spend a bit more time working out."

3. Stay out of the kitchen."Whatever you do, do NOT do your work or read or calls, etc. in the kitchen. That's an open invitation to snack. I like to go into my study and allow my natural laziness to keep me from going into the kitchen. My other favorite thing to do is to snuggle up in a warm blanket to read or watch a movie, and my natural reluctance to get out of my warm 'nest' overcome my inclination to snack."

4. Don't snack. Stick to eat in windows. Meaning set a time when you are allowing yourself to eat, and then another time window when you are not eating. Every time you snack you cause your body to produce some insulin, which we know is a major driver of weight gain. Eat those almonds but eat them with your lunch or dinner, not in between.Hunger comes in waves, so justride them out! If you feel hungry, try to distract yourself by doing something you've been puttingoff in your house like hanging a shelf or cleaning out a closet. Not only will your hunger pass, but you'll also feel relief from being able to organize your clutter!

5. Stay connected. We might have to practice social distancing in person, but that doesn't affect how we interact on the web. Connect with online communities to keep you feeling motivated. Dr. Fung and Megan Ramos offer support through their community,The Fasting Method. They offer live and interactive support groups as well as eating and fasting group challenges that are sensitive to what's going on.

6. Have a glass of water. Before you reach for something to eat,when you feel a hunger pang, drink a glass of water. We often mistake thirst for hunger. Many people find that carbonated or mineral water is especially good at suppressing appetite.

7. Practice stress reduction. Breathe, Meditate, do Yoga.with activities like deep breathing, yoga, and mediation instead of reaching for the pantry. These are stressful times and you may not even realize that you're thinking about your job, your paycheck, the market, the economy, and how long all this will last. If you are stressing you are sending cortisol through your body and that can lead you to self-soothe with carbs and other serotonin-boosting foods. Yes, there are reasons to be stressed, but being unhealthy or eating bad food won't help. Breathe. To alleviate stress before it starts, create a daily routine and stick with it. Having a routine reduces stress on the body, which can keep cravings for comfort foods at bay.
