The placebo effect is a wonderful thing, and still highly mysterious. A person who believes they have been given effective treatment for pain or disease, even though they havent, might get better. Placebos can work even if you know they are placebos, and for reasons no one understands the placebo effect appears to be getting stronger over time. It is silly to casually dismiss findings that a medicine performs only a little bit better than placebo: placebo is already extremely strong.
It is surprising, then, that the placebo effect is first mentioned only halfway through this compendium of stories about people given terminal diagnoses for stage 4 cancer and other diseases who, for medically unexplained reasons, suddenly experience a miraculous recovery, or in the lingo a spontaneous remission. One woman goes to a faith-healing centre in Brazil and gets better; another quits her job and starts doing yoga and gets better; another accepts herself just as she is and faces up to death and gets better; a man adopts the keto diet and gets better, and so forth.
The author, a psychiatrist with a theology degree, is determined to keep an open mind about all this but not so open, the reader hopes, that everything falls out. He notes, for example, that people who attend the Brazilian healing community experience a sudden change in diet (lots of fruit juices and vegetarian meals), spend hours a day meditating, and experience the loving kindness of strangers, all of which are definitely good for you. The keto diet, in particular, might be excellent for the immune system and we know, thanks to the growing field of cancer immunotherapy, that a supercharged immune system can defeat tumours all by itself. Even forgiving those who have wronged you, some research suggests, is good for the immune system.
There are no stories here about people who became ill, changed their diet, avoided stress and still died anyway
This is all interesting and warmly related, and Rediger mainly avoids woo, as you would hope a medically trained person would though there is one dispiriting section in which he excitedly suggests that quantum physics might explain how the mind can affect the body. How, exactly? Oh, just because quantum physics apparently is showing us that some of the laws of the universe that we thought of as fixed or immutable are, in fact, not. Actually, quantum physics, too, is grounded in immutable laws. The author is in a hurry, too, to dismiss the possibility that a couple of his case studies happened to be especially high responders to chemotherapy drugs that they did, in fact, take, while also embracing their unique individuality.
Its worth noting that an ancient, moralistic view of health and disease is still encoded into the terms we use: remission originally meant forgiveness of sins, or pardon for a crime, and the potential negative implication of a book such as this, which cheers on those who experienced remission for having done all the right things, is that if you get sick, and stay sick, you have no one to blame but yourself. The sect known confusingly as Christian Science, indeed, follows the teaching of its founder, Mary Baker Eddy, that sickness is merely an illusion and can be corrected by prayer. Despite his laudable attempt to reassure the reader that being sick is not your fault, Redigers own conclusion is not a million miles from the same idea. What spontaneous healing has taught us, he writes, is that waking up to a deeper awareness of our value and strength is capable of changing our physiology. If we assume that the mind is powerful and capable of altering disease progression, it follows that a significant mental change may be capable of precipitating a significant physical change even a remission.
There is a lot of work being done with that little may. From a scientific standpoint, there is a severe issue of selection bias in the narratives the book offers. Rediger does not, after all, tell any stories about people who became ill and then changed their diet, avoided stress, embraced love, and faced up to their inevitable extinction and still died anyway. You would think there would be no shortage of such discouraging tales. Without a sense of whether they, as you might suspect, vastly outweigh the cases of amazing recovery, it is hard to draw firm conclusions. The introduction even claims that the author has discovered the foundation for a new model of medicine, but it would be irresponsible to suggest anyone decline hospital treatment in favour of positive thinking. In the meantime, the author himself at one point boasts that it is almost impossible for him to become ill. Given the timing of his books publication, one can only hope he is right.

A look at Google search trends shows that queries on the immune system have jumped in the last month. Obviouly an after-effect of the spread of the Coronavirus.
For those who dont know what the immune system is: It is a complex network of cells and tissues that help fight any foreign particle trying to enter the body. Though genetics play a part, the immune system is largely determined by other factors like sleep, stress and eating habits, which play a major role. The germs we are exposed to throughout our life also play a role in our immune response.
The immune system is generally stronger in people who have a balanced routine between work, food and exercise. So though we are helpless about the system we inherit, one can improve it with proper exercise, balanced diet and low-stress levels, says city-based paediatrician Dr Ashok Kolluru.
While prevention is always better than cure, for those of us who cannot practise social distancing, Dr Ashok has some advice. Social distancing is good even for people with a strong immune system, as they could be a carrier of the virus. But, for those who have to step out, it is advisable to keep at least three feet distance from people. Avoid physical contact as much as possible. Wash your hands regularly and touch minimum things from your surroundings.
He says that children need special attention, as they do not have a very strong immune system because they are not exposed to a lot of germs as compared to an adult. Encouraging them to be physically active and providing them with a balanced diet is key to keep them healthy.

The oldest trick in the book to boost the immune system is to use turmeric, says dietician and nutritionist Anjali Dange. Drawing up a list of food items that will help, Anjali says, Turmeric can bolster the bodys immuno-modulating capacity. Though turmeric is an essential part of Indian cooking, it is better to consume some of it in raw form. People can make neem and turmeric balls by grinding them into a fine paste and rolling them into small balls. Preferably they should be fresh, but they can also be stored.

The closing of schools means that children are going to spend a lot of time indoors. Anjali has a fun, productive and healthy way to meet this challenge. Fruits do wonders to the kids immune systems. So rather than serving them fried snacks or processed food, parents can try making fruit-based smoothies or popsicles at home. These will not only wkeep themengaged but also ensure they are eating healthy.
Anjali also advises replacing tea or coffee with sukku (dry ginger) tea or coffee.
For ages, sukku tea has been used as a remedy against cold and flu. Ginger is a strong antioxidant that boosts the immune system naturally. It contains vitamins like magnesium, iron, zinc, and calcium that help in countering cold viruses.
With social distancing now essential, one can hardly step out for gym sessions or yoga classes. K Ramesh, Head of the Department at Andhra Universitys Yoga Village, says that a 45-minute yoga routine daily will help people stay fit. Being fit boosts our immune system and even a single workout session will improve our ability to fight germs. So a routine that includes 10 minutes each of meditation and pranayam along with 25 minutes of stretching exercises should be good to keep your mind and body healthy, he says. For elder people who can no longer head to parks for their morning or evening strolls, breathing exercises like Kapalabhati and Nadi Shodhana are essential. Elderly people can do simple poses like katichakrasana, badhakonasana or Shavasana. They can also practise basic stretching exercises like neck rolls, chin-to-chest, ear-to-shoulder, wrists rolls and shoulder circles, he adds.

At some point in your life, you may have tried to drop a few pounds but noticed your bod isnt changing in spite of all your hard weight-loss efforts. Im eating healthy! Im not snacking on chips! I walked three miles every day this week! Seriously...what gives?!
As it turns out, there are a slew of factors that affect weight lossdiet and exercise are only two of them. It also depends on your starting weight, your age, and your gender, says obesity expert Matthew Weiner, MD, bariatric surgeon at Tucson Bariatric. Dr. Weiner explains that the best way to predict how much weight you can reasonably lose with basic dietary and exercise adjustments "is by calculating 10 percent of your total body weight."
For example, if youre starting weight is 150 pounds, you can expect to lose about 15 pounds at first through diet and exercise alone. Beyond that, weight loss can become a tad tougher (though not hopeless!). Your body naturally will begin to resist losing much more weight than around 10 percent thanks to its caveman impulses, explains Dr. Weiner. It will work to maintain your fat and energy stores to preserve your body.
Dr. Weiner notes that younger adults can sometimes lose up to 20 percent of their body weight through straightforward diet and exercise. But for postmenopausal women, for example, it might only be 5 to 7 percent.
Weight loss is also generally less speedy for women compared to men, alas. Men do tend to lose weight faster than women, but when you look at the total amount of weight loss [over time] its not as different as you might think, Dr. Weiner explains. It might take men two to three months to lose 10 percent, while it takes women five to six months. (*Glares.*)
Now that you understand those major physiological influencing factors, here are 20 possible behavioral reasons for why your weight just isn't changingand what you can do to overcome each one. (Psstt, you may be doing one or even a few of these!)
Raise your hand if youve ever thought something like the following after weighing yourself: Im still losing fat, Im just strength training really hard and gaining muscle.
Most of us have done it, but the problem is, Dr. Weiner says it doesnt work that way: Muscle is similar in density to water (while fat has a higher density) so its not an apples-to-apples exchange. In other words, refusing to reevaluate your weight-loss strategy because youre working on building muscle can result in your fat composition staying put.
A good thought experiment is comparing one pound of muscle to a 16-oz. can of soda [which has a similar density], Dr. Weiner explains. Imagine adding that much muscle to your bodyyou would see it.
In other words, you would notice yourself actively building enough muscle to tip the scale toward a higher number...so if you basically look the same, think about something other than muscle gain. Consider tweaking your diet a bit to create a caloric deficit to move the needle, or try HIIT workouts to get your heart rate up and burn fat.
If you consume fewer calories than you expend, Dr. Weiner says its definitely possible to lose about 10 percent of your total body weight through dieting alone. But if you want to lose more, you cant just keep cutting calories. You have to change the type of food you eat, he says, focusing more on the quality of calories versus the quantity.
For example, if you order in delivery for dinner every night, eating fewer restaurant-prepared meals every week for lunch will probs help you shed some pounds at first...but eventually, the weight loss is going to stop unless you make the switch to even healthier lunches (like made with fewer oils, dressings, etc.) on a consistent basis. Once youve changed the quality of your caloriesand are consuming better-for-you foods with more satiating poweryoull also naturally eat less calories, which can make weight loss continue past the 10 percent point.
Dr. Weiner says that its human nature to judge ourselves favorably, dismissing or underestimating our bad decisions and emphasizing our good ones.
Translation? Youre likely to pat yourself on the back for eating a salad on Tuesday, while overlooking the fact that you ate two bowls of B&J for dessert (and then still wonder why youre not losing weight). Tracking your caloric intake in a visible, tangible waylike in a food journal or on an appcan help keep you accountable, and help you eliminate the bias we all have toward ourselves, says Dr. Weiner.
Generally speaking, protein has benefits: it fills you up (which means youll eat less food over time) and also helps you build muscle, skin, and healthy bones. But when it comes to weight loss, not all protein is created equal. Dr. Weiner warns about over-consuming animal proteinand the fat that typically comes with itbecause too much can lead to weight gain, and other health problems like diabetes.
Plant-based protein, on the other hand, is different (think: legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains). Dr. Weiner says you can eat higher amounts of these foods without worrying about negative effects on your health. Ive literally never seen a study suggesting that [sources of plant protein like nuts] cause weight gain, he adds.
Frustrated because youve been on your diet for three months and youve only lost, like, eight pounds? Before you freak out and try some new fad diet, think about whether your goal is just to lose as much weight as possible right this second, or to slim down healthfully over time, so you can keep the weight off permanently.
We tend to look at weight loss in the short-term, when its actually a long-term problem, says Dr. Weiner. There will be individual ups and downs every day, just like there are in the stock market.
Instead of taking a short-term POV on weight loss, consider looking at how your weight has changed over the last several years and how you would like to feel several years from now, too.
If youre blowing off diets focused on eating whole, clean foods (think: the Mediterranean diet) you might want to reconsider. Nutrition experts have known for a long time that diets full of whole foods, like fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein, are associated with better weight-loss results than diets packed with processed foods (like cereal, crackers, and prepackaged meals).
A 2019 study in Cell Metabolism further emphasized the benefits of a whole food diet; when participants ate diets similar in nutrients (e.g., similar amounts of protein, fat, sugar, and fiber), the group consuming processed foods showed higher levels of caloric intake and weight gain than the group consuming whole foods.
Yes, sometimes too much of a good thing can be not so good. Just because you swapped your nightly bowl of ice cream for Greek yogurt doesnt mean you can eat twice as much. The basic rule of "fewer calories in, more calories out" still applies, even when what youre eating is healthy.
The one exception? Dr. Weiner says you really cant overeat vegetables (seriously, the more you eat, the better). If you ate a pound of them every day, you would still lose weight because it would change your other eating behaviors, he explains, referring to the fact that if you filled up on veggies, you would reduce your appetite for other less healthy foods.
Remember the info about quality and quantity of calories above? The same applies to exercise, says Dr. Weiner, who suggests focusing on intensity versus duration when youre trying to lose weight by incorporating exercise.
If you want to walk for weight loss, you would have to walk 10 to 12 miles per day, he explains. Walking one or two miles, like so many people do, is good for you in a million waysbut weight loss isnt one of them.
Instead, if you want your exercise to yield weight loss, you could benefit from choosing activities that will boost your heart rate like boot camps, cycling classes, CrossFit sessions, or other high-intensity workouts that maximize cardio.
Gonna hit you with something totally shocking here: If youre drinking even one soda per day, you will never lose weight, says Dr. Weiner. Ummm, back up for a sec...is soda really that bad for you? Sorry, but yes: Dr. Weiner says when you drink sugar it drives up weight gain far more than when you eat it.
If youre hungry and eat a cookie you will be less hungry, or youll eat less at lunch; but when you drink 150 calories it doesnt impact your hunger at all, he explains. So you drink a soda, then you still eat a normal lunch, and all youve done is add 150 calories to your daily intake (versus splurging on a cookie and naturally course-correcting by eating 150 calories less later on).
Dr. Weiner also says working the night shift puts you at a major disadvantage. The disruption to your circadian rhythm, he explains, can lead to weight gainand switching back and forth between night and day shifts, like many people do in order to spend more time with family, is the worst of all. Its just nonstop disruption to an otherwise healthy, normal sleep-wake pattern.
For example, a 2019 study in the International Journal of Obesity observed weight loss over the course of 12 months in nearly 2,000 participants and found that those with less variability in sleep patterns were more likely to be more successful in their weight loss efforts.
Of course, not everyone has the luxury of choosing their work schedule or having a flexible boss. But if you are able to tweak your work schedule or work with your manager to avoid this, you should.
Never underestimate the power of keeping your body moving regularly throughout the day. Overly sedentary lifestyles make it harder to lose weight, says Dr. Weiner. If you wake up every morning and then sit at a desk for work, then come home and sit on the couch to watch TV, [weight loss] won't happen.
There was a time when eating frequent, small portions of food throughout the day was promoted as a way to lose weight, but science is beginning to show that the whole concept behind intermittent fasting might lead to better results. Dr. Weiner agrees, saying that getting the right amount of calories in a short period of time followed by a longer period of time where you get little to no calories can be more beneficial to your health than eating all day long (even if its small, healthy meals or snacks).
You should talk to your doctor or a nutritionist before trying an intermittent fasting diet, this way they can help you figure out a schedule that makes sense for you. There are also some groups of people for which intermittent fasting is not recommended, like anyone with blood-sugar regulation issues (e.g., diabetes) and pregnant people.
Can drinking water really help with weight loss, or is that just an urban legend? Its for real: A 2014 review of studies published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found several links between water consumption and weight-loss results.
Basically? Yeah, you should be drinking more water.
Not to be a killjoy, but your bi-weekly happy hour could also be interfering with your goals. Alcohol is connected to weight gain for a few reasons: For one, it contains empty calories (which can grow astronomically high when you start drinking cocktails), and two, it changes your relationship to food.
People typically eat more when they drink because their appetite is increased and they stop paying close attention to calorie consumption. Drinking alcohol may also negatively change the way your body burns fat.
Any medical condition that affects your hormones (like hypothyroidism or polycystic ovary syndrome), your insulin levels (like diabetes), or your blood pressure (like heart disease) will make it more difficult to lose weight.
Dr. Weiner adds that any injury which results in limited mobility can also contribute to weight gain, partly because it can lead to muscle lossand less muscle means you are burning less when your body is at restand partly because it will reduce your ability to exercise regularly.
All the diet and exercise in the world wont cancel out the fact that its just plain harder to lose weight the older you are. In your 20s, you might be able to cut back on booze and cake for a few weeks when you want to lose five pounds, but in your 40s, its gonna take more effort.
Focus on resistance training to build muscle mass, which can ultimately help you burn more at rest, and in turn, jumpstart your weight loss if you're stuck.
Major life changes, like divorce or a death in the family, are often a trigger for weight gain. Stress-eating is a real thing, and when youre depressed youre typically not focused on counting calories or exercising (because it takes so much effort just to make it through the day).
Weiner recommends finding holistic ways to manage your stress, even if its simply low-impact cardio. And of course, if youre feeling depressed, dont hesitate to get help from a mental health provider.
While this is heavy stuff, it's important to be aware of the correlation between abuse and weight gain. A history of sexual abuse is often linked to weight gain, in particular, and the number of people who have been sexually abused, especially at young ages, is staggering: According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, one in three American women report experiencing some kind of sexual violence in their lifetime.
Whether youre a child or an adult (and whether or not your history is affecting your weight), there are resources that can help victims of sexual violence or other abuse.

Hair often plays a critical role in forming a womans identity, so it should come as no surprise that female hair loss can have a major effect on self esteem, mood and confidence. It can even result in increased stress, anxiety and clinical depression, according to board certified dermatologist Anna Drosou of DermSurgery Associates in Houston, Texas.
Discussion around female hair loss pales in comparison to talk about male baldness, so we spoke with several experts who explained to us the most common causes of female hair loss and how to treat them.
As always, consult with your doctor before diagnosing yourself with any of the following causes or conditions.
First, Get To Understand Your Hair Cycle
Everyones healthy hair cycle follows a similar pattern: The active growth phase of hair (anagen) lasts 3-5 years, followed by a 10-day transitional period (catagen), and finally the telogen phase, in which the hair sheds and follicles fall out. The follicle is then inactive for three months before the whole cycle is repeated.
Some people experience hair loss at a pace thats more rapid than usual (telogen effluvium), which is a prolonged (and usually sudden) period of hair loss. Telogen effluvium is a reactive type of hair loss, caused by some sort of internal disruption, i.e. nutritional inadequacies, illness, surgery or hypo/hyperthyroid, Anabel Kingsley, a trichologist, associate member of The Institute of Trichologists and brand president at Philip Kingsley, told HuffPost.

Hair loss, thinning and similar issues occur when the normal hair cycle is disrupted, Kingsley explained. This can be due to a variety of reasons, some common for both women and men, others focused specifically on women. The American Academy of Dermatology defines normal hair loss as 50 to 100 strands a day, so anything more than your usual amount could be reason to see a doctor.
Drosou said that hair loss due to hormones, stress, iron and diet-related causes is generally reversible. Its harder to reverse hair loss connected with hereditary causes or rare inflammatory cases. Upon first seeing a patient, Kingsley first conducts blood tests to look at potential hormonal or nutritional deficiencies.
Hormones
Hormones can wreak havoc on our skin, and unfortunately that applies to our hair, too.
A balance of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone is necessary for healthy hair growth, according to Roy Stoller, a board certified surgeon and founder of Hair Transplant NYC.
Although estrogen usually promotes hair growth, when in excess, it can tip the balance and actually increase testosterone, causing a testosterone-related hair loss, Stoller told to HuffPost. In that case, there may be a genetic predisposition to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which attacks the hair follicle, diminishing and eventually resulting in total loss of the follicle.
Stoller provides a solution to this situation to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT and prolong the life of the hair follicle: The one most prescribed drug is Finasteride. Although only approved for men, women have also had success with it. This is a prescription-only drug, so speak to your doctor if you think it might be a good fit and ensure you know all the contra-indications, which include loss of libido among others.
Pregnancy Hormones
Its not uncommon for a pregnant woman to receive compliments on her hair, which appears fuller, shinier and overall more healthy during pregnancy. Though not every woman experiences this, for those who do its due to a prolonged anagen phase thanks to higher estrogen and progesterone hormones during pregnancy.
However, Stoller noted that 40% of women will experience excessive shedding (telogen effluvium) post-birth. This is due to the physical stress of the labor, and its self-resolving without treatment, Drosou said. Stoller added the effects are temporary, lasting around three to four months, and starting at three months post-birth. Being diligent with the intake of all necessary vitamins and minerals is helpful in dealing with this type of hair loss, and its completely reversible.
Menopause Hormones
Both before and during menopause, hormonal changes affect hair growth, particularly due to a decrease in estrogen and progesterone. Stoller said that female pattern hair loss is more common during that period, and could even relate to hair loss from androgens (male hormones) depending on the womans genetics. The decrease in the female hormones leave the hair cells unprotected from circulating androgens. Over time, the hair shafts will thin, miniaturize and eventually die, Stoller said.
Estrogens are hair friendly and help to keep strands in their growth phase, Kingsley explained. They also offer a sort of buffer against androgens, which are not very good for your scalp hair. The extent to which a woman will experience changes to hair diameter is down to genes, she added.
Studies have shown that Finasteride can be successful against hair loss in pre- and post-menopausal women who do not intend to be pregnant. There are suggestions that anti-androgen hormones can help, as well as iron supplements. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can be beneficial in hair loss too, by slowing it down or stopping it completely, studies show. Another topical treatment that is proven to work in menopausal women is Minoxidil.
Thyroid Irregularities
The thyroid gland is responsible for regulating our metabolism, and its usually the first thing a doctor will look at if you have issues with weight changes or hair loss.
Thyroid hormones are released in the body at a steady steam, Stoller said, regulating everything from breathing to temperature, body weight and hair growth. Nutrition and thyroid disease can affect the release of those hormones, and Drosou notes that low thyroid hormones, also known as hypothyroidism, can cause reversible alopecia and even lateral eyebrow thinning. With proper medication to support the thyroid, the hair loss can be completely reversed.
Anemia
Anemia, or iron deficiency, is one of the most common causes of hair loss in women, apart from hormones.
Low iron stores can force hair into a chronic rest phase, resulting in increased shedding and reduced density, Stoller said. Drosou adds that iron deficiency is quite common if youve experienced sudden weight loss, and is often the result of going on a vegan diet.
Iron is used both for hair production and red blood cell production, Drosou said. The body wisely prioritizes the red blood cell production, so if it has a limited amount of iron intake, the first thing to be affected is the hair. Speak to your doctor, who will be able to give you a suitable iron/ferritin supplement depending on your needs.
Eating Disorders
These affect the body in various ways, creating physical stress for the body and often resulting in hair loss.
Stoller notes that the protein in hair (keratin) is not essential for the body, and at periods of malnourishment, hair growth will stop. The body prioritizes nutrients going to vital organs (brain, heart, lungs) over hair, so shedding occurs, Stoller said. Depending on a persons age, genetic makeup and health status, regular hair growth usually returns in about six months after the malnourished state is resolved, Stoller said.
Heredity
The hereditary form of alopecia is female pattern hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia, Drosou said. This is usually seen as diffused thinning, not bald spots.
She notes that this form of hair loss can happen at any point during adult life, and is more common in connection to menopause as its connected with androgen levels. Women with conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, which is connected with androgen levels, could see hair thinning earlier.

Medications that block androgens, like spironolactone, are somewhat effective at reducing hair loss and preventing worsening of the condition, Drosou said.
Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia
This is a type of hair loss that leaves scars at the front of a womans hairline, and its becoming more common, particularly in post-menopausal women. Kingsley said its now seen even in younger women, but the exact triggers arent known.
It is thought to be caused by a faulty immune response, whereby your body attacks and destroys hair follicles at the front of your hairline, leaving scar tissue behind, Kingsley said. Unfortunately, you cannot regrow hair from a scarring alopecia. However, at [hair] clinics we endeavor to stop it from progressing and reoccurring.
This is not to be confused with traction alopecia, a type of hair loss thats a result of wearing tight hairstyles, like ponytails or tight braids worn repeatedly that pull out the hair follicles. Kingsley said these hair styles should be avoided as they can cause traction breakage, which could pull out hairs from the follicle and then lead to traction alopecia over time. If treated early, the hair can grow back normally after six months. Otherwise, it could cause non-reversible scarring alopecia, which is often seen in women who use weaves, hair extensions, braids and chemical relaxation.
Insulin Imbalance
Insulin is a hormone that regulates energy. Its obtained from the food we eat, and then released into the body to help store energy for future use. Since insulin can affect hair growth, its important to take note of the glycemic index (GI) a ranking of how foods affect your blood glucose levels of foods you eat.
Eating high-glycemic foods in excess, often in combination with a sedentary lifestyle, can cause an overload of insulin in the body, Stoller said. Too much insulin disrupts ovulation and signals the ovaries to make more testosterone, Stoller said. A change in diet and lifestyle can help insulin levels and restore hair growth.
Stress
We know stress can be catastrophic for the body and the mind, so its no surprise that stress plays a major role when it comes to hair loss.
Kingsley notes that anything that affects your physical well-being impacts your hair to an even greater degree. Hair is non-essential to physical survival and so it will always be the first part of you to suffer when something is off-kilter, he said.
Stress is connected to our cortisol levels, which are increased, Stoller said, when insulin levels rise, in turn triggering a testosterone increase. After a particularly stressful event, and 2-4 months after the event, women may experience hair loss, but after 6-plus months hair returns to normal, Stoller added.
Drosou notes that stress-related hair loss is also seen after events like childbirth, hospitalization, divorce and the death of a significant other. The reason is that stress induces a larger percentage of follicles to enter the telogen phase, resulting in increased shedding of hair. The hair follicles remain intact, so complete recovery is expected after 6-12 months, Drosou said.
The Takeaway
No matter what the underlying cause of hair loss might be, as with many health issues, a balanced diet with the necessary nutrients and vitamins is essential.
Hair is the first point of damage when something is out of balance in our bodies, as its a non-essential tissue or a vital organ. But as hair cells are the second-fastest growing cells our body makes (the fastest-growing are the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract), their nutritional requirements are high, Kingsley said. Supplements can be helpful in the support of good hair health, in conjunction with a healthy balanced diet. Looking after the scalp and cleaning it properly is also important to support healthy hair growth, as well.
As soon as you notice an increase in hair loss, its important to take action and see a dermatologist, trichologist or specialist. Every situation is very different, so seeing an expert is essential.

The attacks on America on Sept. 11, 2001 changed everything, including TV drama. From a New York City fire station to Washington, Yemen and Venezuela, these two television dramas arose to deal with their aftermath and responses.

This 2004 FX series focuses on New York firefighter Tommy Gavins (Denis Leary) family and the men of his firehouse. Tommy is an impatient, self-loathing, hypocritical, manipulative relapsed alcoholic who suffers with severe survivor guilt and post-traumatic stress as a result of 9/11. He blames himself for his firefighter cousins death in the twin towers, while entering into an affair with his cousins widow.
Tommys cousin, indeed, a small group of the dead that he blames himself for, follow him around, firefighters and chidren, with whom he seems to be in onging communication.
A comedy-drama, Rescue Me is both personal and blunt, while the comedy ranges from guy stuff (the station house is teeming with testosterone) to the blackest situations that find laughs even in death and devastation among the major cast. Carlton Cuse (Bates Motel) and writer Graham Roland (Lost, Fringe) are the latest to take on Tom Clancys creation Dr. Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst who first appeared in the 1984 novel The Hunt for Red October and has since, like Sherlock Holmes and Norman Bates, transcended time. Ryans commanding officer at the Terror, Finance, and Arms Division (T-FAD) of the CIA, James Greer (Wendell Pierce, The Wire), snatches Ryan from a party to Yemen to interrogate the man assumed to be responsible and his bodyguard, when the base where they are is attacked by rebels.
Director and Executive Producer Daniel Sackheim has said, What was so great about the Harrison Ford movies was that they were about an everyman hero. He was a guy who wasnt a superhero. He was heroic, but he was vulnerable. He wasnt afraid to be scared. He was a regular man and a hero (IndieWire), and Krasinski, best known as office drone Jim Halpert, fits the part like a glove.
The terrorist Suleiman is given personal motives that transcend politics and so is relatable to any audience. The plots are intriguing and solid and the action set-pieces are flashy while apparently realistic. The Suleiman plot wraps up with the first season, and the second season opens in Venezuela. NEW YORK (CNN) Want to fight fat, wrinkles and chronic disease? Consider slashing the amount of added sugar in your diet.
The empty calories in sugar definitely contribute to weight gain and the obesity epidemic which in turn leads to all sorts of chronic diseases, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and more.
Sugar can even make you look older than you are by interrupting the skin's ability to repair itself. The end result is more wrinkles.
Now consider this: The average American eats 22 teaspoons of added sugar per day, according to the American Heart Association. That's a fanatical amount of sweetness a level only addicts would share.
The recommended level? No more than six teaspoons a day for women and nine for men.
To fight your sugar addiction and begin to reclaim your youth and health, start by becoming a sugar detective.
Identify and toss all sugary ingredients in your home, including white and brown sugars, corn syrups, pancake syrups, jams, jellies, honey and molasses.
Add any boxes of ready-to-mix items to the trash as well, such as pancake, brownie, cookie, cake and instant pudding mixes.
Now take a good look at the labels on the rest of the foods in your pantry, and be prepared to be shocked. Sugar is often used by food manufacturers to extend a product's shelf life, so even savory items often contain sugar.
Pasta sauces often contain as much sugar as a cookie. Salad dressings such as French, honey mustard and raspberry vinaigrette can deliver between 5 and 7 grams of sugar in just two tablespoons. Ketchup is worse it has about 4 grams per tablespoon. Barbecue sauce, hoisin sauce, Teriyaki sauce and even pickle relish all contain sugar.
Healthy bran, oat and corn breakfast cereals (not to mention the kids' versions) are packed with sugar, too.
Think the pantry is now danger free? Probably not. That's because manufacturers hide sugar by using different names.
Evaporated cane juice, agave, fruit nectar, fruit juice concentrate, brown rice syrup, malt syrup, corn syrup, date syrup, barley malt and anything that ends in an "ose" think fructose, sucrose, maltose and dextrose are all added sugars.
One advocacy group counted up to 61 different names for sugar on food labels. How can we possibly fight such marketing? Last year the US Food and Drug Administration announced it is making manufacturers list all "added sugars" on food labels. But don't put your detective hat away yet -- manufacturers have until July 1, 2021, to comply.
We all know that one can of soda delivers nearly a day's worth of recommended sugar, but have you looked at your favorite energy drink? Sugar is typically the second main ingredient, and many contain more sugar than a soda.
What about sports beverages, which kids often drink? A 20-ounce Gatorade contains 35 grams of sugar, while some brands of 32-ounce sports drinks have between 56 and 76 grams four to six times the recommended daily amount for kids and teenagers.
Ready-to-drink iced tea can contain up to 32 grams of sugar per bottle. Even fruit-flavored waters typically contain added sugars.
It may seem smart to just switch to a diet soda or other artificially sweetened beverage. But there's a catch: Artificial sweeteners can be 150 times sweeter than sugar.
Why does that matter? Because you're trying to train your brain to detox from an addiction to sugar's delicious sweetness. So why would you feed it something that's going to make it crave even higher levels of sweetness?
Many foods marketed as "health" foods are also full of sugar. Instant oatmeal is healthy, but when it's flavored it can have up to 15 grams of sugar per packet. Even the reduced sugar varieties can have 6 grams. Make your own and add fruit.
Look at the ingredients on that "healthy" granola bar and you'll probably find corn syrup, brown sugar, honey, brown sugar syrup, dextrose or fructose. If they've added yogurt or chocolate? Even more sugar.
Speaking of yogurt, even the low-fat flavored versions can have 30 grams of sugar per 8-ounce serving it's what they do to make up for the lack of fat. That's as much sugar as two scoops of ice cream.
So, detective, you now know what to look for to begin restricting the amount of sugar in the foods you eat. What are you going to replace those foods with?
Whole foods like fruit, vegetables and whole grains. They too contain sugar an apple can have around 20 grams of sugar, a banana 14 grams and a sweet potato 7 grams.
