Weathering the Storm: Outbreaks in Chapel Hill, from Spanish Flu to COVID-19 – Chapelboro.com

The coronavirus outbreak has at least for now completely transformed life as we know it, and that can be a very scary thing.

In this time of rapid change and uncertainty, it can be comforting to remind ourselves that we have actually been through things like this before, and weve gotten through it and yes, life did eventually return to normal.

For instance, take the Spanish flu outbreak of 1918-19, which killed tens of millions worldwide, including 33 in Orange County an epidemic far worse than Covid-19 has been, at least so far.

How did our community weather that storm?

UNC has created a digital initiative calledDocumenting the American South, dedicated to gathering documents related to Southern history, literature, and culture. Part of the collection includes a summary of Orange Countys response to the flu outbreak, written shortly after by Annie Sutton Cameron as part of a largerRecord of the War Activities in Orange County, North Carolina, 1917-1919.(Thanks to Mia Day Burroughs for discovering the document in her research.)

Heres how Cameron described what happened when the epidemic hit Orange County including the extreme and quick steps taken by local health officials (notably the closing of all churches, schools, [and] theatres during the fall of 1918), as well as the heroic work of individuals to help those in need.

Shortly after the opening of the University for the year 1918-19 cases of Spanish influenza began to appear. In a short while scores had been stricken with the disease. In the very first days of the epidemic the Red Cross volunteered its services and began helping the physicians. The co-eds of the University were called upon to make face masks for the doctors and nurses in the various emergency hospitals. Two hundred and eighty-six masks were made, as well as one hundred and seventy arm bands for the attendants in the hospital. For weeks Miss Helen Shell, Miss Katherine Bourne and Mrs. Kent Brown did volunteer nursing in the University hospital, while other women were aiding stricken families all over the village. As the epidemic spread to Carrboro the need for volunteer nurses became more imperative. A committee composed of Misses Josie Pritchard and Helen Shell and Mrs. Kent Brown and Mrs. William deB. MacNider, assisted by others, worked night and day relieving the distressing conditions of the stricken people. Mr. J. S. Carr gave the use of the club rooms for a diet kitchen, paying all expenses for the maintenance of the same. Mrs. R. B. Lawson and Mrs. Arthur Blackwood volunteered to take charge of the kitchen and for two weeks served nourishing meals of soup, bread and milk. At least seven gallons of soup were served daily. Each morning two orderlies visited the various homes of the village to obtain an accurate report of the needs of the people, so that these needs might be supplied. This record would be incomplete without mentioning Miss Roper, who left a remunerative position as nurse for Mrs. McDade and ministered to the University boys afflicted with influenza. Although ill herself, for days she stayed at her post until forced by the physicians to give up. In a few days pneumonia developed, and this brave woman died, having truly given her life for others. Early in October, 1918, Dr. D. H. Hill, State Chairman of the Council of Defense, sent letters to all County Chairmen warning them of the spread of Spanish influenza, which was threatening the whole country. In this letter he made suggestions as to what steps should be taken, etc.

In accordance with this, Mr. J. C. Webb called a meeting of the representative men to meet with the County Commissioners and plans were made for Relief Work. It was realized at this meeting that there was no County Board of Health, and so one was created, with Dr. Spoon of Hillsboro as County Health Officer, who with the following constitute the Board of Health: Dr. B. B. Lloyd; Ed N. Cates Chmn. Co. Board of Commissioners; Jeff Turner, Mayor of Hillsboro; R. H. Claytor, County Supt. of Schools.

Mr. T. N. Webb was appointed County Chairman of the Relief Work, with Dr. J. S. Spurgeon to represent the Hillsboro School District. The other districts were as follows:

Mr. Sterling Browning, representing the Eno District.

Mr. Carl Forrest, representing the Efland District.

Mr. John P. Hughes, representing the Cedar Grove District.

Mr. Eubanks, representing the Chapel Hill District.

Rev. Harvey Bradshaw was appointed to have charge of the town of Hillsboro and Mr. C. H. Robertson that of West End.

On October 7, the Board of Health ordered the closing of all churches, schools, theatres, etc., and forbade all meetings of every kind, in order to prevent, if possible, a spread of the disease which had already broken out in the community.

With the appearance of the first case, assistance was given in nursing and furnishing suitable nourishment and necessities by citizens of the town, and Dr. Spurgeons family, Rev. Mr. Bradshaw, Miss Nellie Russell, and Mr. Chester Turner were among the first to render aid and continued to do all in their power.

When the epidemic spread to the Eno Mill district, the officials of the mill opened a diet kitchen at the West Hill school, and financed it for about seven weeks. Miss Elizabeth Cornelius, Home Demonstration Agent, was placed in charge of this undertaking and proved herself most efficient and faithful throughout the long siege. Without her it could not have been accomplished. Mr. C. H. Robertson supervised this work and rendered every assistance possible, and as chairman of West Hill was untiring in his efforts to do everything in his power. Misses Emma Robertson and Mildred Durham were Miss Cornelius assistants during the entire time and Miss Rebecca Wall also rendered valuable aid for several weeks. As many as 150 people were fed daily for some time, and an average of 90 for most of the time. Not only the sick were furnished with nourishment, but the families with no one to cook or provide for them were furnished with the proper diet. Mrs. Emerson and Miss Allie Graham were secured by the Mill to do nursing, and Miss Duncan, the deaconess at the Mills, with these two, rendered most valuable service and gave unstintingly of their time and strength. After preparing the nourishment the ladies at the diet kitchen went with the nurses to deliver it where it was needed.

Eno Mill also secured another trained nurse, Miss Whitfield, and Bellevue Mill secured Miss Smith from Durham. Mr. Chester Turner and Ross Turner (colored) did noble service as volunteer nurses wherever the need arose.

As County Chairman, Mr. T. H. Webb was most active and efficient and untiring in his labors, and was especially helpful when the need was great in the Bellevue district. He and Mrs. Webb sent food and clothing to those in need.

Rev. Mr. Bradshaw worked long and faithfully when the epidemic extended into the town, collecting and delivering nourishment furnished and made by ladies throughout the town. He was assisted in this by Mrs. J. C. Webb driving him to the homes where he had to go, and when it was impossible for Mrs. Webb to continue, a car and driver were furnished by Mr. J. C. Webb for this purpose until the epidemic was past.

As soon as the need for nurses was felt, Miss Henrietta Collins volunteered to go wherever needed, and later Miss Virgie Cole volunteered, but they were not called upon to serve.

The Relief Work was organized and carried on by the County Board of Health, but most if not all workers were members of the Red Cross. Below are the minutes of a meeting held in connection with this work.

A special meeting of the Executive Committee of the Red Cross was held October 26th, at 10:00 oclock in Major Grahams office. There were present Major Graham, Mr. Robertson, Mrs. J. C. Webb, Mrs. W. H. Webb, Mr. T. N. Webb, Mr. N. W. Brown, Miss H. P. Collins, Mr. Bradshaw and Dr. Spurgeon. This meeting was for the purpose of co-operating with the Committee for the Relief of the Influenza Epidemic, of which committee Mr. T. N. Webb is County Chairman. A motion was carried that there be appointed a chairman of a Nursing Committee of each of the two school districts to whom application may be made for nurses to serve anywhere in our jurisdiction, a record of volunteers to be reported to the Secretary, who was to keep it. Mr. T. N. Webb was appointed Chairman of this Committee for the West Hill School District and Miss Russell for the Hillsboro District.

A canvass of the town was made the day of this Red Cross meeting to tell the people of the need for nurses and to ask for volunteers who might be called upon if necessary. The Red Cross was asked to furnish gauze face masks and this work was done at the work room as long as a supply was needed.

The ladies of the Red Cross were asked to make garments for the sick in emergency cases, and this was gladly done at a moments notice. People were very generous in furnishing butter-milk and soup not only those in town but a quantity of milk was furnished by people out of town, especially east of town. The Rev. Mr. Hester, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Robertson, and Mrs. J. C. Webb alternatively collected this milk for use at West Hill and in town.

After Christmas a second epidemic of Spanish influenza spread through the county and was very bad at Cedar Grove, Efland and Hillsboro. However, the schools and churches did not close and the epidemic gradually died down.(pp 75-79)

Weight Gain Linked to Reduced Breast Cancer Risk Before the Menopause – Technology Networks

Gaining weight from early adulthood is linked to a lower risk of breast cancer before the menopause, a major global study of more than 600,000 women has found.

Being heavier as a young adult is known to lower the chances of developing premenopausal breast cancer, but it has been unclear to date what impact any subsequent weight gain (or loss) might have.

In a new long-term study, funded byBreast Cancer Nowand other collaborators, women who gained 10kg or more from early adulthood (aged 1824) up to their forties or early fifties were found to have a lower risk of breast cancer before the menopause than those whose weight remained stable, regardless of their starting weight.

The international collaboration led by scientists at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, theUniversity of North Carolinaand theUS National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences found that the more weight women put on, the stronger the protective effect, with a reduction in risk of around 4% for each 5kg gained between early adulthood and ages 4554.

The findings provide further evidence that levels of fat, or adiposity, are a fundamental factor determining a womans chances of getting breast cancer.

Experts today called for studies to explore why both body size and additional weight gain independently reduce the likelihood of developing breast cancer before the menopause.

It is hoped that an understanding of the biological mechanism could lead to new preventive therapies and more accurate risk tests to help guide when individual women may benefit most from breast screening.

Breast cancer is the UKs most common cancer, with around 55,000 women and 370 men being diagnosed with the disease each year in the UK.

While the risk of breast cancer increases with age, nearly 20% of cases arise in women under the age of 50, and the disease remains the leading cause of death in women under 50 in the UK.

Previous research has established that having a higher body mass index (BMI) at a younger age is linked to a lower risk of breast cancer before the menopause, but it has been difficult to study in detail the role of weight gain due to the relatively low rates of breast cancer among younger women.

In a new analysis of data from 628,468 women from 17 studies across the world, including theBreast Cancer Now Generations Studyin the UK, researchers investigated the effect of weight gain during six age intervals on the risk of breast cancer before the menopause: from ages 1824 to 2534, 3544 and 4554, ages 2534 to 3544 and 4554, and ages 3544 to 4554.

The analysis led byDr Minouk SchoemakerandProfessor Anthony Swerdlowat The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), Dr Hazel Nicholsat the University of North Carolina and Professor Dale Sandlerat the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences collected information on womens weights at a minimum of two ages, and followed participants for a median of 10.1 years.

Weight changes were analysed in increments of 5kg and a wide range of information was collected from participants to adjust for other factors that influence breast cancer risk including whether they had children and when, their starting weight and any family history of breast cancer.

Where available, other lifestyle factors such as smoking, level of physical activity, and alcohol consumption were taken into consideration.

The researchers observed that 10,886 out of the 628,468 women had gone on to develop breast cancer before the menopause, and found that weight gain of 10kg or more from early adulthood led to a reduction in risk.

Weight gain between early adulthood (1824) and ages 4554 led to decrease in risk of around 4% for each 5kg gained, with weight gain specifically between early adulthood and ages 3544 leading to decrease in risk of around 3% for each 5kg gained.

Interestingly, weight gain when started from the ages 3544 onwards did not affect womens chances of developing the disease before the menopause, which could suggest that it is overall exposure to excess weight over time that is linked to a lower premenopausal breast cancer risk.

Weight loss (of 5kg or more) was not found to be linked to the risk of premenopausal breast cancer once womens starting weight had been taken into account.

Protective effect reverses after the menopause

While further studies are needed, the authors propose that the impact of a womans weight in early adulthood on her chances of developing premenopausal breast cancer may originate in childhood, and could be related to changes in her breast composition during puberty.

It is also thought that other factors such as altered levels of hormones or growth factorsin early adulthood may play a role.

With the protective effect of weight gain reversing after the menopause(where excess body weight increases breast cancer risk and where the disease most commonly) develops, Breast Cancer Now today urged for women of all ages to be fully supported to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, to help reduce the risk of breast cancer after the menopause, and of other types of cancer and other diseases.

The study ispublished in the International Journal of Cancer.

Lead authorDr Minouk Schoemaker, Senior Staff Scientist in Cancer Epidemiology at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, said:

The link between a higher body mass index and a lower breast cancer risk before the menopause has puzzled researchers for a while now. In our large-scale international study, we were able to tease out the effects in more detail than ever before.

We found that while higher weight in early adulthood was most strongly linked to reducing breast cancer risk, later weight gain had an independent effect in bringing risk down further. But we know that the protective effect of a higher weight is reversed after the menopause, when being heavier increases womens breast cancer risk.

Women shouldnt consider gaining weight as a way to prevent breast cancer but understanding the biological reasons behind the link between weight and breast cancer risk could in future lead to new ways to prevent the disease.

Baroness Delyth Morgan, Chief Executive at Breast Cancer Now, which helped to fund the study, said:

These are really important findings that bring us a step closer to understanding the fundamental role of weight on the risk of breast cancer in younger women.

We must be really clear that weight gain itself should never be considered to try to prevent breast cancer, particularly as excess weight raises risk after the menopause, when the disease is most common. Its vital that women of all ages are fully supported to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, to help reduce their overall risk of cancer and other diseases.

We now urgently need to understand the biological reasons why body size and weight gain both lower womens risk of breast cancer before the menopause. Its really promising that the discovery of this protective effect could help us develop new preventive therapies or better risk tests to identify those who may benefit most from screening or risk-reducing steps.

The Study based at the ICR has already led to a number of significant discoveries into the interlinked causes of breast cancer, including clarifying thatwomen taking combined HRT are 2.7 times more likely to develop breast cancer than non-users, and thatsmoking is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer particularly if started during adolescence.

A Former Editor of 'Cosmopolitan' On Her Secret to (Almost) Infinite Energy

No matter how pumped you are about what you do for a living, the grind gets to all of us and at some point, you get sick and tired of feeling, well, sick and tired. The question is: What can you do about it? As a health and wellness editor, Ive proffered my fair share of self-care advice and I believe in its ability to stave off exhaustion and burnout. I also know scoring downtime is more elusive than a bottle of Purell during a viral pandemic.

Working less just isnt a realistic option for many of us.

What is? Changing how you eat specifically, cutting back on added sugars. Through writing my new book, Sugar Free 3: The 3-Week Plan for More Energy, Better Sleep & Surprisingly Easy Weight Loss, I discovered just what a scourge sugar is, sapping us of our health and vitality when we eat too much of it which we all do. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum calories from added sugars you should eat in a day is 100-150. Said another way, less than 10 percent of our daily calorie intake should come from added sugars, according to government regulations. And yet a brand-new study from Tufts says a whopping 42 percent of our daily calories come from low-quality carbohydrates like refined grains and added sugars.

So, I devised a plan with help from a number of credentialed wellness pros to ditch sugar from your diet. It isnt about following a fad or a narrow list of allowable foods (grapefruit for breakfast, lunch, and dinnerhard pass). Instead, I encourage you to eat whole, delicious food (lean proteins, healthy fats, vegetables, whole grains, dairy) that will keep you satiated. And you can eat them until your stomach is content because you dont have to count calories or eat tiny portions. Translation: Youll never be hangry.

To be clear, Sugar Free 3 focuses on ridding your diet of added sugars and their evil twins refined carbohydrates and artificial sweeteners. Added sugars are sugars that are added to foods when they are prepared or processedas opposed to the naturally occurring sugar in, say, an apple or a glass of milk. Refined carbs are processed foods that have been stripped of nutrients. For example, to make white bread, manufacturers remove the good stuff the outer coating of a wheat kernel (known as the bran) and the germ before the remaining inner endosperm ground into flour. Artificial sweeteners are chemicals that can be hundreds of times sweeter than sugar.

None of those ingredients have any nutritional value they are just empty calories.

The problem: Avoiding these do-nothing foods is harder than it seems. The reason were consuming way more sugar then we even know is because it is hidden in so many foods we dont even think of as sweet, even savory ones. Food scientists engineer products to have just the right amount of sweetness to make you crave more...and more...and then stick it in everything from soda to pasta sauce to salad dressing.

In the Sugar Free 3 companion video series on the Openfit app, I enlisted nutritionist Keri Glassman to help me walk through how to read a food label to spot hidden sugars. (The program can be done via the book or the digital-streaming app). Once you get the hang of it, you can easily outsmart even the most cunning food package hows that for a confidence booster?

On top of unknowingly eating too much sugar (which makes us crave more), our desire for sugar is an innate survival mechanism albeit, an outdated one. When we were under stress in caveman dayssay, from running away from an animal predator wed expend a lot of energy, says Glassman. To replenish that energy, wed look for natural sugar in the form of something like berries to provide immediate fuel. The problem nowadays is that were stressed, but were sitting on our butts at desks or on the sofa and we dont need to hunt for fuelits sitting in front of us, in the form of processed, refined sugar. And when we have too much of that in our body, it gets stored as fat.

And thats just for starters. Over-consumption of sugar has been linked to chronic health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and obesity, in addition to contributing to unstable moods, skin issues, sleep disturbances and low energy. In fact, the long-standing belief that chowing down on a sugary treat can cure a late afternoon slump with a quick energy fix is a total fallacy, especially in adulthood. Smacking back a donut is actually more likely to make you sleepy. Several studies show that orexin, a brain chemical that makes you feel awake, is inhibited when you eat sugar. A 2019 meta-analysis of 31 studies published in the journal Neuroscience & Behavioral Reviews found that simple carbohydrates like sugar decrease alertness and increase fatigue within an hour of consuming them.

These findings proved out in the test groups we ran for the Sugar Free 3 program. In the initial group, 80 percent of participants reported feeling more energy and subsequent participants have reported similar results. Bonus energy and better sleep were among the earliest benefits I experienced personally when I started eating sugar free. It makes sense. Without added sugars sparking a short-term energy boost before bedtime, were able to drift off naturally, leading to steadier energy levels when it matters most during the day!

When it comes to preserving good health, its not smart to ignorehow harmful sugar is. And the more of you that you eat, the poorer your choices are bound to be. How so? Theres plenty of research out there backing up the deteriorative impact sugar can have, including one study in the Journal of Alzheimers Disease that associated mild cognitive impairment with elderly people who ate a diet high in carbs and low in protein and fat. Another study in Clinical Interventions in Aging surveyed more than 1,200 adults over the age of 60 and found an association between excessive sugar consumption and poor cognitive function.

But sugar issues dont just kick in with old age. A study in the British Journal of Nutrition of more than 7,000 people between the ages of 45 and 70 also linked higher sugar intake with a decline in cognitive function. The study didnt determine whether excessive sugar consumption caused a lack of brain power, or a lack of brain power caused excessive sugar consumption. Chicken or egg, less sharp people tended to eat too much sugar. So, if youre feeling foggy, or you lose focus during the day, I can report that those who cut back on sugar swear it cleared their heads.

If thinking straight isnt motivation enough, maybe this will prove more enticing: Curbing sugar may be a boon to your sex life. High consumption of sugar negatively affects your energy levels, and we all know how a lack of energy can impact the desire to get busy. Lethargy is a major reason why sex lives fizzle out, especially for long-term couples.

And if youre a guy, consuming excess sugar may have an even more dampening effect on your mojo. According to a 2018 study published in the journal Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology, men who consumed sugar-sweetened beverages had a lower testosterone level than those who abstained from those drinks. Hurleys soothing encouragement might be just what you need to get you on the move and centered. You can try a 14 day free trial, and then its $19.99/month for a monthly subscription, or $119.99 for a year (which comes out to $9.99/month).

The best thing about fitness on youtube? Its free-99, baby!

With nearly six million subscribers and multiple Reddit community endorsements, the husband and wife team that run Fitness Blender could be the virtual trainers youre looking for. They have over 500 workouts of multiple lengths, and the titles specify whether you need equipment or not. There's no music in these one-on-one trainings conducted in a white void. However, the explanations of the movements and the countdown timer are super visually clear and usually loud enough that you can play your own tunes through a speaker if you want. I recently chose Lizzo's album and it was the perfect accompaniment to what turned out to be a VERY sweaty HIIT session.

A name that kept coming up in my YouTube search was Cassey Hos blogilates. Maybe its just because blogilates is catchy, but multiple reviewers caused her beginner-friendly pilates-esque YouTube classes and burning bootcamp videos fun and encouraging, but super hard. Pilates is all about small targeted muscle and core strengthening a great idea for anyone who wants to improve their health all around.

This YouTube channel used to post daily fitness videos, but is not so active lately. However, a trove of celebrity-focused videos led by Instagram fitness influencers remains on the YouTube channel, which has over 3 million subscribers.

PopSugar has tons of workout class options, but some of the standout offerings are in their dance and cardio sections. Want to do Zumba in your home? No problem. How about hip hop or latin dance? You got it. Just because youre cooped up inside doesnt mean you cant have fun.

The Times set the world ablaze when it claimed you could get a full workout in just 7 minutes of high intensity interval exercise. The workout is based on an article in a fitness journal that crafted 12 optimal moves into an extremely compact full body workout. You can guide yourself just by looking at this diagram, doing each move for 30 seconds, with 10 seconds of rest in between. But if you want the ease of an app, that exists, too.

I recently strapped my Apple Watch back on after months of not wearing it. Ill likely be working from home for the next couple weeks, and my beloved gym is closed, so Im giving myself another tool and reminder to keep moving. My Apple Watch tells me to stand once an hour - a good reminder for my couch-bound self. Apple also suggests setting Activity Sharing or Activity Competitions with coworkers and friends so you can keep each other motivated from a distance.

Update 8:53pm: Black Oak Casino has canceled all-league bowling for the remainder of the Winter Season for all eleven leagues. All league presidents and secretaries will be working to close the leagues and process the prize funds/refunds to league members in accordance with USBC guidelines. ATCAA Continues to Provide Critical Services Limits In-Person Contact

In an effort to keep themost vulnerable in our community safe while still providing emergent services, the Amador Tuolumne Community Action Agency, (ATCAA) is limiting in-person contact during the COVID-19 crisis. Effective through March 27th, doors will be closed to the general public at the Sonora Service Center, but most programs and services will remain open with the exception of Head Start who will follow the county schools closure protocols and the Free Tax Preparation Program which is awaiting IRS direction.

ATCAA provides services to low-income residents who need assistance in areas such as food, housing, emergency shelter, energy bill and home weatherization assistance, free income tax preparation, childcare, youth prevention programs and more.

There is an application and screening process for almost all services and that process can be handled initially over the phone and through the mail. Information and applications for services are available on ATCAAs website and outside the Service Center. A secure drop box is also available for completed applications.

When an in-person appointment is necessary, staff will schedule as needed andemphasis will be placed on infection prevention such as disinfecting common areas and practicing social distancing.

The Food Bank will continue to provide food for its partner pantries and residents in need while limiting personal contact. They are also working with the County Schools and other food distribution locations to ensure no interruption of food delivery. Residents are encouraged to call theFood Bank directly at 984-3960 x101 if they find themselves in need.

The ATCAA Service Center can be reached by calling 533-1397, Monday through Thursday from 9 am until 4 pm. For more information about specific programs and how to reach them directly visit ATCAA.org

Update March 17, 12:30pm:The Supporting The Blue A K9 Fundraiser scheduled for March 20th has been canceled.

Columbia College Foundation has canceled the special campus presentation discussion of Native life scheduled for Monday evening, March 30.

Update 4:17pm: Tuolumne County Library is canceling library programs. We will not be holding story times, after school programs, book clubs, computer classes, or other events. The branches will be open to check out library materials and a limited number of computers will be available for individual use. The Tuolumne County Bookmobile will not be making its regular scheduled stops.

Update 3:50pm:All Calaveras County Library locations are closing on a directive from the Calaveras County Administration Office.

Tuolumne County is running its libraries and other government offices as normal with the exception of closing the Tuolumne Museum and History Center for 60 days from last week. As reported here the Mother Lode League suspended games in a decision that will be reassessed on April 1st. It impacts baseball, softball, golf, tennis, swimming and track and field.

Supporting the Blues Fundraiser, this public dinner fundraiser for the Sonora Police Department is confirmed as scheduled. They will evaluate if recommendations change. The event is at the Mother Lode Fairgrounds on Friday March 20 from 5pm until 9pm. Live music and auctions, proceeds will be used for a K9 patrol car and load bearing vest. Tickets are available at the Sonora Police Department Call Faith at 588-6993.

Last weekends TuCARE dinner is already rescheduled for May 16th.Murphys Irish Day 2020 was canceled.

The We are Tuolumne County Open House scheduled in Groveland was canceled, the remaining two dates and locations in the series of seven open houses is here.

Lambert Center has closed due to mainly senior age volunteers being advised to stay home. The Enrichment Center is open from 8am to 3pm. They have showers and computers and are practicing social distancing, some groups can meet if they are able to spread out enough (computers are also spread out now.) They do ask that everyone who comes in to use hand sanitizer right away and please stay home if they are sick. There is some of the food (pizza) from the Lambert Center. All community Centers are listed here.

The Tuolumne Fun Run is still scheduled for Saturday, March 21, they will be having a 1 mile, 5K, and 10K run to raise money to offer childrens classes at the Westside Fitness Gym. Details are here.

Murphys Senior Center is closed until at least April 6th related to public health recommendations. Their fall prevention program Stay Vertical Calaveras has also been canceled until further notice. An overview of local community center closures is on our page here.

Sierra Senior Providers, Inc. has closed the Senior Center and the Congregate Lunch programs in Sonora, Jamestown and Groveland. Starting Monday, March 16th, meals will be made available at the Senior Center for Pick-Up Only for current congregate lunch participants.

The home delivery Meals on Wheels program is continuing without interruption and drivers are following recommended health and safety precautions.

The Senior Center is also closed to all classes, groups, activities and events until further notice.

Common Ground Senior Services Silver Streak Transportation Program, continues to provide transportation to seniors over the age of 60 who have no other means of transportation. This service is for medical appointments only and are considered essential to the participant health and safety. Drivers are following recommended health and safety precautions.

Area 12 Agency on Aging has canceled all exercise programs in Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne Counties until further notice. The Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP) will conduct phone appointments only until further notice.

Sierra Repertory Theater notes that Camelot has ended its run as of Sunday, March 15. Performances were scheduled through April 12.

What happens next? Nicholls athletics deals with virus best it can – Daily Comet

Stefanie Slekis tried to answer as many questions as she could while rumors and concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus and the state of the program swirled through the Nicholls track and field program.

The Colonels coach called a team meeting on March 12, in the hopes of giving her athletes some heads up on what might be heading their way. Over the next 48 hours, their season would be put on hold until at least the end of the month and then for the remainder of the year.

In the days to come, athletes, several of which are international students from all over the world, worried they might not be able to get home for months as countries began locking down their borders. A few heard unfounded rumors through social media the Texas border would soon close, meaning even U.S. students may be stuck in Louisiana for the time being.

On top of that, they have dorms to move out of and potential online classes to set up. They have to return books at the end of the semester. International students have visa requirements to fulfill. They were unsure if they could continue training as a team or if their coaches could send suggested workouts they could do on their own.

What about eligibility? Will seniors be allowed an extra year to compete and what would that mean for scholarship counts?

In what felt like one of the longest weeks of many peoples lives, the rapid fire of breaking news reports could not compete with the rising rate of questions. Every clarification created more confusion and every solution only seemed to bring about more problems.

The world, and the sports world in particular, was in chaos with everyone doing their best to figure it out one step at a time.

Augusta (Marie Christensen), who is from Denmark, asked me, Theyre talking about closing the borders until July in Denmark. I think I might need to get home, Slekis said. Youre looking at if somebody doesnt get home now and the borders close and cross country starts in August, they might not get to go home until December or next summer. Our team, we were following it pretty close already because of the international students on our team. Our Texas kids were following it, too, and one of my Texas girls was following things and talking about the National Guard and that they might close the Texas border, she thought.

So they were really paying attention, and because of all that happening, they realized this is bigger than us being able to go run.

The decision to shut down all NCAA winter and spring athletics for the remainder of the year is one that filled many programs with mixed feelings.

Nicholls womens basketball coach DoBee Plaisance thought the teams seven game win streak going into the postseason was a sign they were going to win the whole Southland Conference Tournament. But even as they received news of its cancellation just minutes before loading the bus for the arena, Plaisance voiced her total support in doing what was best for the health of the student-athletes.

The move is even worse for spring sports who had only just begun when they were told they could no longer play.

Nicholls baseball coach Seth Thibodeaux said he understood the decision and knows it was for the best, but that doesnt negate the bitter disappointment of a season ending before it could really start.

The Colonels were preparing to host their Southland home opener against Central Arkansas this past weekend and just beginning to feel good about their play after a rough start. Now, Thibodeaux cant help but think about how a series loss at New Orleans would, unbeknownst to them at the time, be the final weekend series of the year.

Its tough for everybody, Thibodeaux said. Theyre a little depressed. Were a little down, but were trying not to be all doom and gloom. Our goal is to make the best of it. But its a tough time. Its different.

Its a situation few can compare to any other in recent history.

Thibodeaux was an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana during the devastation of Hurricane Katrina back in 2005, which altered many athletic schedules for months. But that was also during the fall and didnt prevent players from meeting for team activities when they were able, leaving him in uncharted territory for how to proceed now.

The lack of experience left teams scrambling to figure out ways to keep players in shape while sitting at home. For many that meant creating exercise programs that focused on body weight lifts and conditioning.

Nicholls beach volleyball coach Kallie Noble said her program sent players individual workouts they could do from home after all but three players left Thibodaux to be with family.

As a coach, you just let them know this is one of those things that are out of your control, Noble said. You can either sit and dwell on it and be upset or you can pick up the pieces and move on.

"Today they received their at-home workouts because we assume they cant go to a gym right now and we dont want them going to a gym right now so an at-home workout for now and then as things hopefully clear up in the next few weeks theyll transfer into their summer workout packet."

For Slekis and the track team, the quarantine wont change much as they essentially shift to offseason workouts where she can recommend trainings sessions and advise runners on how best to proceed. She noted running outside by yourself can be beneficial for your immune system while still practicing the recommended social distancing in order to fight the spread of the disease.

I just sent out really light training for this week because so much is going on, Slekis said. I have girls taking international flights. Other kids drove home to Texas. So I just sent a team email saying heres where were at, hers some ideas on what to do this week, some light workouts I thought they could do and some suggested mileage for the week.

Slekis credited Nicholls leadership, under Interim Athletic Director Lindsey McKaskle, for being helpful in guiding teams while so much uncertainty floated around the situation. With little information coming out of the NCAA and the Southland at the moment, teams have tried to gather as much guidance as they can where they can.

But the questions about what happens next rage on.

All programs are in a complete dead period for the time being before they can hope to resume any team activities or bring recruits to campus for official visits. Nicholls will roll out online classes over the next week as many other schools across the country do the same.

As of now, the Southland Conference halted all team events until March 30, including practice and spring football, but said in a statement that it reserves the right to alter plans as more developments about the virus roll in.

When teams will be able to return and what the landscape of their sport will look like when they do remains an open question.

At the end of the day, it may really benefit some players if they get another year, Thibodeaux said. The tough part is that theres some players maybe starting medical school, maybe starting law school, maybe in their fifth year trying to get their masters and finishing up. Thats really hard.

Theres so many good things that are going to come out of this, even though it doesnt look like it right now. The tough part is that I know my team was not ready to stop.
