Waking up on Feb. 17, Rebecca Cardenas got a text at 11:18 AM with the news she was hoping to hear.
"Hello Becca," the text read. "You have been randomly selected for drug testing."
Of course, this wasn't the senior point guard's main goal when the season began in November, but she sees the "random" test differently than most athletes would.
Whereas some athleteswould get offended at the notion they are cheating the game with banned or illegal substances, Cardenas revels in the idea that she's been so good thatsomeone, somewhere, is thinking she has to be juicing.
"At the beginning of the season, I was like if I don't get drug tested this year, something's wrong," Cardenas said after SUU's 64-50 win over Northern Colorado Thursday night.

She got her wish, and her performance on the court this year says she earned it.
Cardenas, who came to SUU from Burges High School in El Paso, Texas, leadsthe Big Sky in scoring average at 17.5 points per game. She's topped 20 or more points in seven games so far and has scored 30-plus points twice.
She has a wicked first step on drives, leading to high-percentage shots at the rim and a 42.7 shooting percentage for theseason.

On defense, Cardenas is seemingly always in opposing passing lanes, which is evident by her league-leading 2.8 steals per game average.
When she isn't flexing these statistics, Cardenas is flexing at the in-house cameras around the America First Events Center after tough finishes and significant baskets.
"It probably is random, but all the athletes here are like 'oh it's definitely not random.' Jokingly, but kind of serious," Cardenas said. "I think they just see my guns now. I'm not a little freshman no more."

Not all athletes share Cardenas' sentiment on getting a "random" drug test. San Francisco 49ers star Richard Sherman has been vocal about receiving drug test orders from the NFL.
After playoff wins over the Vikings and Packers, Sherman got his "random" drug test and wasn't too happy.
"Hahahaha ball out and get the double dip," Sherman tweeted on January 11th."PED and HGH tests.... hahaha gotta love it."
Cardenas welcomes it, however, a trait indicative ofhersavvy veteran experience playing in the Big Sky. SUU has been the beneficiary. Originally offered a scholarshipby former SUU coachChris Boettcher, Cardenas stuck with the T-Birds whenBoettcher was fired after the 2017-218 season.

Since coach Tracy Sanders took over, Cardenas has flourished into SUU's do-it-all player who's flirted with triple-doubles at times. Her scoring ability and penchant for making the right pass has been key to the team's entire offense gameplan.
"She's so good at including everyone," SUU junior forwardDarri Frandsen said."It's so fun to play with her."
Cardenas' ultimate goal is to make the Big Sky All-Conference team after gettingsnubbed from the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference team. So far, she's played her way to at least a spot on the second team.

Little victories in Cardenas' eyes, like getting that drug test, are small victories along the way.
"Going up in grade, the same people would always get drug tested,"Cardenas said."My pride was a little bit up that day."

‘I Joined A DietBet Challenge To Lose WeightAnd I Lost 54 Lbs. And Build Strong Abs In The Process’ – Yahoo Lifestyle

![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
From Women's Health
My name is Jessica Ashwood (@fitnessnfoodwjess). Im 27 years old, and I am a kindergarten teacher in Virginia. I joined an incentive-based weight-loss challenge to jumpstart my journey and ended up losing 54 pounds to date.
I have struggled with my weight almost as long as I can remember. I spent much of my adolescent and teen years overweight. I remember being at a friends house at around 10 years old, and my friend wanted us to weigh ourselves for fun. I weighed significantly more than her. But I didnt think anything of it until she said, "you weigh a lot."
Throughout my high school years, my weight fluctuated up and down. I felt better about myself when my weight was lower; when it was on the higher end, my self-esteem was gone. I couldn't help but feel that way.
I also never felt in control of my weight. In college, I started trying to work out and eat healthier, but the healthy habits never stuck for long, and I would jump right back into my old ways of eating and being stationary. After getting married in 2016 and starting my first teaching job after college, I started gaining weight at a rapid speed.
So that January, when I was 25, I decided to take control of my health. My choice to overhaul my lifestyle wasn't just about self-esteem, either. I felt tired all the time. I was depressed and using alcohol and food to soothe myself. I just felt crappy. I avoided looking in the mirror. I avoided having my picture taken.
To motivate myself, I started a six-month DietBet challenge, which is an incentive-based weight-loss app and social network. Basically, you bet a certain amount of money that you can lose a percentage of your body weight in a specific timeframe. If you achieve your goal? You earn money. If you don't? You lose it. I hate wasting or losing money, so this helped me set myself up for success when I first started. The challenge I joined gave me six months to lose 10 percent of my body weight.
When I first started the challenge, I just tried to eat stereotypically healthyIm talking salads, chicken, rice, broccoli, carrot sticks, etc. I did lose weight but found that my diet choices felt too restrictive.
Macro counting is kind of like a variation on calorie counting, where you track your protein, fat, and carbohydrate grams. When I started tracking macros, I began ensuring that I was giving my body what it needed to thrive. It helped me make sure I got the bang out of each calorie, so to speak, allowing me to stay in a calorie deficit without feeling hungry.
I used iifym.com to find out my macros. I only used the free information and didnt pay a dime. I also used the MyFitnessPal app to track my food. I weighed my food with an $8 food scale I bought on Amazon to ensure I was getting the correct portion sizes. After macro tracking for three to four months, I no longer need to weigh all of my food, as I could eventually eyeball portions.
Now I focus on eating lots of protein and veggies and have everything else in moderation. And I dont avoid *any* foods. I love all kinds: pizza, pasta, ice cream, you name it. I do not believe you have to give up the foods you love to lose weight.
I knew if I just showed up and was told what to do during a workout, it would be easier for me. I mainly did Spin class and Body Pump (which is a strength training class with weights). Body Pump gave me the confidence I needed with weights to get on the main floor and work out solo. I worked out around five times a week doing the StairMaster and then weights.
I got pregnant in July 2018 with my son, and after having a baby, I now work out at home. I work out for only 30 minutes, five to seven times a week. I barely do cardiobut when I do, I use my stationary bike. I also do strength training with my dumbbells, kettlebells, and resistance bands.
I have found a lot of success with my 30-minute workouts. I am in better shape now than I was even at my fittest even before having my (now 11-month-old) son. I do strength training workouts I find on Instagram and use free resources from popular fitness Instagrammers. Whitney Simmons and her workouts are my favorite!
I also stopped giving up at the slightest disappointment. When I weighed myself and the scale told me I gained weight, I kept pushing forward. When I went overboard with my food, I went right back to being on track instead of falling into the trap of the all-or-nothing mentality.
Eating finally feels effortless. I used to binge and eat everything in sight and then feel guilty. It was a constant thing for me. Now, I really enjoy what I eat and I give myself permission to have the foods I love in moderation. I still lose weight, but in a sustainable way that isnt me depriving myself.
I used to hate working out, but now its my therapy. Ive never regretted a workout. I try to do a short workout before my baby wakes up almost every morning. It makes my day so much better! Once you see fitness and health as a lifestyle, you stop rushing the process because you get the whole this is your whole life mentality. It's true, this is the only life I get. I want to live a life that makes me feel happy and fulfilled.
Over the years my weight has fluctuated between 156 and 178 pounds. In 11 months, I have lost 54 pounds. But it isn't about the scale number; it's about how I feel, now compared to back when I started.

Reduced stress is linked to changes in the profile of plasma metabolites – Tech Explorist

Psychological stress is known to be related to obesity, low rate aggravation, and metabolic disorders. However, the underlying systems remain poorly comprehended. In the recently distributed examination, the scientists utilized metabolite profiling to contemplate whether improved mental prosperity is related to quantifiable changes in metabolism.
The study found that reduced stress is linked to changes in the profile of plasma metabolites. It also highlighted the associations of psychological well-being with metabolism and the risk of disease.
The study involved obese individuals with perceived psychological stress symptoms. They were categorized into two groups: one group to undergo a mental lifestyle intervention (60 individuals) and a control group (64 individuals). Both groups managed to lose weight, but the intervention group, in particular, reported reduced stress and improved psychological well-being.
Using metabolomics techniques, the researchers performed an extensive analysis of fasting metabolites in all study participants at the beginning of the study and again nine months later, after the intervention had ended. Surveys and heart rate variability measurements assessed stress and psychological well-being.
Scientists noted,Changes in the plasma levels of many phosphatidylcholines were associated with improved psychological well-being, and to some degree also with weight loss. Reduced stress and weight loss were associated with lower levels of certain lysophosphatidylcholines, and with higher levels of some plasmalogens. Obesity and the inflammatory marker interleukin-1 receptor antagonist, on the other hand, were inversely associated with these levels. The researchers also discovered previously unknown lipids that correlated with stress levels.
The study is published in the Scientific Approval.

How this man lost 60 pounds: Mindful eating was the key to weight-loss success – NBC News

Name: Jeremy Bromwell
Age: 38
Residence: Full-time RVer based in Florida for the winter
Job: Founder, Your Marketing Explorer
Family status: Single
Peak weight: 243 pounds
Current weight: 174 pounds
Height: 511
Jeremy Bromwell always made it a point to stay active and maintain a healthy weight he lifted weights at his gym and ran 5ks, 10ks and a half marathon. [Exercise] was something I did pretty regularly to help keep my weight in check, so I wouldnt be giving up the experience when I sat down to a meal at a restaurant, he says.
That all changed in October 2014, when Bromwell was riding his motorcycle home from work in San Francisco and was hit by an SUV. The accident shattered both of the bones in his lower leg. He was expected to recover in about six months, but his bone became infected.
Talk about adding some mental and emotional barriers on top of the physical. At the six-month mark I was supposed to be back to normal. That got blown up it became wait and see, we dont know. My brain was not able to wrap around it, he says. Bromwell needed 10 surgeries before that bone healed properly, and the last one was performed in December 2016, more than two years after his accident.
The motorcycle accident was the first time I had physical limitations imposed that I couldnt work out on my own, he says. I lost control of the activities I could and couldnt do. That was where I really started to struggle.
As Bromwell recovered, he concedes that he overdid it. For a long time, I couldnt do the things I enjoyed. As I started to get more mobility back and I was able to drive myself, I over-indexed for all the things I hadnt been able to do, whether that was a glass of wine or a restaurant or both, he says.
Samantha Cassetty, MS, RD, a nutrition and weight-loss expert with a virtual nutrition counseling practice based in New York City, understands the desire to turn to food after an event like Bromwells. He went through a very tragic and challenging experience, and food can be such a source of pleasure and comfort. Its the quickest route to feeling better, she says.
Bromwell says his ramped-up social life contributed to his weight gain. Once I could start to meet friends and colleagues out of the house it was nice to do that. That, combined with not being able to do things like weights a couple of days and cardio three to five days, was the catalyst for the weight gain.
Cassetty points out that while exercise isnt as useful for weight loss, its very helpful for weight maintenance. So, the decline in activity levels can definitely promote weight gain, she says.
Bromwell gained 30 pounds, and during a four-month long road trip with his partner in summer 2017, trying restaurants in different U.S. cities, he added another 30 pounds.
Back in California in November 2017, Bromwell and his partner split up. I was single for the first time in four years and I was really heavy. Its amazing when you see yourself every day you dont see yourself changing. You look back and think, What the hell happened to me?
Get the better newsletter.
Inspired by the summer road trip, Bromwell decided to try living and working on the road full-time. He also decided he needed to get serious about losing weight.
I had a lot of leg pain from carrying around the extra weight. I wanted to move forward in a happier, healthier way and get back to my pre-accident weight, even though it seemed like an infinity away, he says.
Cassetty recognizes that a lot of people, like Bromwell, want to get back to a previous weight. But focusing on the scale can be a challenge. The number on the scale is often beyond your control stress, sleep, age, medications, can all play a role, she says.
She recommends goals you can control, like exercising twice a week, cooking two dinners at home, or meal prepping for an hour over the weekend. When you focus on a goal that you can accomplish, it can lead to behavior change and that will typically result in achieving a more comfortable weight, she says.
With a background in digital marketing and analytics, Bromwell loves tracking and understanding data. He also knew he wanted a healthy lifestyle, not a diet where he felt forced to give things up. I learned enough about my body through all those surgeries that I knew I needed to listen to my body, he says. I wanted to make healthy choices in a mindful way.
He started using the Lose It! app to log his food, bring together data about his activity and sleep, and track his progress toward his goal of losing a pound a week.
Cassetty says this type of tracking can be a good tool. For those who appreciate the data and feedback, studies show that this form of self-monitoring can be very effective for weight loss, and research shows that many people dont have any problems with it, she says. Its a personal choice, though. Some people find it tedious and it can lead to an unhealthy obsession about food, she says.
Focusing on portion size made a big difference for Bromwell. I had to get back in the habit of cooking for one, he says. I had to figure out on the road how to make better choices. I had to balance the experiences of meeting people, seeing new places, and traveling solo with affordable and easier-to-eat healthy cooking.
He explored farmers markets to find fresh, healthy ingredients. He also started weighing his food. Im not a person who wants to give something up. Im more deliberate and more conscious. Instead of a high-calorie, high-carb meal Ill have something steamed, fresher and leaner, he says.
On holidays and vacations he still tracked what he ate, but he gave himself the flexibility to go over budget.

How WHEN you eat could improve your wellbeing and help you lose weight – The Sun
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
WE all know certain foods are healthier than others, but now research suggests it is not just a case of you are what you eat, but also you are WHEN you eat.
According to a recent study, eating a big meal for breakfast can help your body burn two-and-a-half times as many calories than if you eat the same in the evening.
8
People who consume most of their calories in the morning have lower blood sugar levels and are less likely to be obese.
So could the secret to a healthier lifestyle be down to the hands of time?
Here, Rhiannon Lambert, registered nutritionist and host of the Food For Thought podcast, tells Jenny Francis how looking at the clock before you tuck into your food could help you and your waistline.
8
EATING a bigger breakfast can help your body burn two-and-a-half times as many calories, researchers at Lbeck University in Germany found.
They also found that eating a low-calorie breakfast increased peoples appetites, specifically for sweets, so a bigger, balanced breakfast is more likely to see you eating healthily throughout the day.
8
Rhiannon says: Not rushing to work on an empty stomach, and having fuel in the tank, is a great way to maximise energy and productivity.
"A mix of fibre-rich carbs, protein, and veg or fruit, does the trick. My go-to is baked eggs, halloumi and veggie frittata, and cinnamon, banana and almond porridge.
Upon waking, your body can be more dehydrated than usual, so have a hydrating drink such as hot lemon water rather than caffeine.
MOST of us reach for a cup of coffee first thing in the morning to wake us up, but scientists say this could actually make us more tired in the long term.
Most of us produce more cortisol, the stress hormone that also helps us wake up, in the morning, peaking at 8am.
8
If you drink caffeine at this time every day, your body naturally stops producing cortisol, meaning long-term you will miss out on this natural wakening hormone.
Scientists have concluded that its best to drink a cup of coffee when cortisol naturally dips during the day, so you feel more alert during an energy slump. Generally, this is between 10am and 12pm.
A separate study found that consuming caffeine immediately before exercise can boost performance and increase the amount of calories you burn.
RHIANNON says: Lunch is a great time to eat spicier food, as you need not worry about sleeping while it digests.
Also, our ability to focus comes from a steady supply of energy from food and so if you enjoy bread and pasta, lunch is the ideal time to consume these foods if you want to concentrate in the afternoon.
8
Eating wholegrains, which release energy slowly into the bloodstream, means you can remain mentally alert throughout the day and have enough time for your body to slowly release, and use up, the energy they provide.
Rhiannon says: Sweet snacks like chocolate bars and cakes are better to have with or straight after a meal as having sugar with other foods, rather than as a snack on its own, will help to prevent a sudden blood sugar spike..
MAKING sure you drink plenty of water each day helps to reduce your daily calorie intake, because it increases your feeling of fullness.
One study found that doing this before a meal reduced calorie intake by 13 per cent.
8
Keeping yourself well hydrated during the afternoon can there-fore stop you from reaching for snacks, while also keeping you refreshed before dinner.
EATING a couple of hours before bed is recommended for a good nights sleep as it enables your digestion to get the hard bit of work out of the way in time for you to unwind, says Rhiannon.
Having a smaller portion in the evening, rather than overeating, can help digestion.
8
"I recommend a balanced plate with key nutrients including vegetables, and a small amount of carbohydrates and protein.
There are some scientific studies that claim carbohydrate and protein consumption aid a good nights sleep.
MOST professionals advise that you should avoid eating too much before going to bed.
Some studies also argue that our metabolism slows down when we fall asleep, so the calories we consume directly before bedtime are more likely to be laid down as fat.

Rhiannon says: Rice cakes with a teaspoon of nut butter, or yoghurt, or a small portion of porridge, are all good options.
These foods are all easier to digest than other foods and do not contain too much sugar. They produce the hormones serotonin and melatonin, as well as amino acids, which can all help you sleep.

Galion woman who once starved herself gains healthier relationship with food and exercise – Richland Source
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)

MANSFIELD -- Galion resident Heather Royce once starved herself to feel good about her body, but now shes learning the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise with the Strive to Thrive contest.
Royce felt inspired by her cousin who, in the past year, lost 100 pounds with the help of a personal trainer.
A lot of my family is bigger, my dad was always bigger. I just dont want to get out of control where all of a sudden one day Im 300 pounds. That scares me a lot because it could easily happen, Royce said.
Royce has had an uphill battle with losing weight. Even after joining the Galion Community Center YMCA with her friend, she still didnt see the results shed hoped to see.
Heather Royce, 38, is from Galion. She works in material support/inventory for Jay Industries. Ohio State is her favorite football team, and she named one of her two Great Danes Brutus after Brutus Buckeye.
I would get really, really serious and I would only eat salad, and I would try to watch what I was eating, and then I would gain two pounds, Royce said. The only time Ive ever really felt that Ive lost decent amounts of weight, I was pretty much starving myself.
Royce always had a skewed version of herself where she thought she looked the same whether she gained or lost weight. However, it dawned on her one day how much she gained when her boyfriend had to make a new hole in her belt to get it on.
During the period she would starve herself, Royce would eat tiny portions of food a day and power through her hunger for the rest of it. When she noticed how much weight she lost in the process, she saw how great she looked while on the inside not feeling as great.
Though two of Royces family members who were overweight received gastric bypass surgery, she wants to lose weight the natural way.
That (gastric bypass) never crossed my mind, Royce said. I dont want to do that I dont think thats the way youre supposed to lose weight, so I want to do it the right way and show them that if you just cut back, watch what youre eating, you can actually make a difference.
In the past, Royce would tend to watch the scale too much after her workouts, leading to her feeling disappointment when she wouldnt see any progression.
I just want to find something that actually works for me thats healthy and doesnt involve me not eating at all, Royce said.
Licensed Independent Social Worker Tracy Hamilton is one of the only counselors in Mansfield to work with clients who have eating disorders at Life Steps Counseling Service. Compared to other therapists, Hamilton works with 50-70% more clients with those mental disorders.
I would love for us to have more resources in this area, Hamilton said. Often, if they need a higher level of care, we have to send them to different facilities throughout the state or out of state.
From what Hamilton has seen in Richland County, one of the most common reasons behind eating disorders is related to a persons dissatisfaction with themselves.
Loved ones need to keep in mind that eating disorders are complicated and an illness the person is battling, not just something they are choosing, Hamilton said. Someone struggling with an eating disorder needs compassion. They need support and help finding resources.
Royce and her boyfriend originally wanted to join the the Strive to Thrive contest together, but only Royce met the deadline to sign up.
With it being National Eating Disorder Week, Hamilton hopes there will be more discussions in Richland County about eating disorders and supporting those affected by them.
Even if they aren't sure if they have an eating disorder, they may have disordered eating which can lead into one, Hamilton explained. Preventing a bigger problem is better than intervening on severe problems.
Although shes received some skepticism from family members about whether she will stick with the Strive to Thrive contest, Royce hopes to prove them all wrong and not let herself down.
Im excited to do it in a healthier way and I just want to get into some kind of routine to where Im eating healthy, exercising and just knowing that what Im doing is progressing, Royce said.

Diet for weight loss: The study findings also suggest that changing diet repeatedly or abruptly could be harmful to health in certain situations. Read here to know what is a healthy diet for good health and weight loss.
A healthy diet is one which includes all food groups in a balanced way
Weight loss: Are you someone who keeps trying new diets? It may help you achieve your fitness goals, but it is definitely not the best thing to do for your health. Ideally, you should be consuming a healthy diet comprising all foods groups in a balanced way. Anything different from this is not going to be sustainable. What's more... switching to a rich or wholesome diet after you have followed a restrictive diet can reduce life expectancy and have a negative impact on your health, according to a recent study. Researchers, including those from the University of Sheffield in the UK provided insights on how diets can benefit humans by delaying ageing and age-related diseases.
Published in journal Science Advances, the researchers fed restrictive diet to fruit flies followed by a wholesome or rich diet, reports PTI. It was found that these flies were more likely to die. They even laid less eggs as compared to flies that spent their whole like eating a rich diet.

This theory, the scientists said, suggested that humans and animals invested in maintaining and repairing the body in times of low food availability, to await times when food availability increases again.
The findings of the current study, according to the researchers, implied that rather than waiting for food availability to increase in the future, the flies were waiting to die on a restricted diet.
The new interpretation, according to the scientists, can help us understand why and how diet can have such profound effects on health.
They said the findings also suggest that changing diet repeatedly or abruptly could be harmful to health in certain situations.
"Our results have now pointed us towards a more refined explanation of why it occurs, and have the potential to wholly shift the focus of future research," said study co-author Andrew McCracken from the University of Sheffield.

If you want to lose weight, you can slightly cut down on carbs. Refined carbs and white sugar are a complete no-no. Also stay away from sugary, aerated drinks and fruit juices.

It takes a village: How the Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera got his groove (and body) back – The Detroit News

Lakeland, Fla. Miguel Cabrera walked through the clubhouse Tuesday morning after a workout wearing a dry-fit Adidas muscle shirt tucked into gym shorts.
Tucked in? Who knows when Cabrera last tucked in any kind of shirt, let alone a workout shirt.

The transformation of his body over the winter has been remarkable, even if he doesn't much want to talk about it.
Its early, Cabrera said, waving off any praise.
Spurred by chronic pain in his right knee that led to a career-worst 2019 season and borne out of a near-desperate desire to get back to the Hall-of-Fame worthy hitter hes always been, Cabrera hired a village of trainers, doctors, nutritionists and physical therapists to help him reshape his body, lose weight, regain some flexibility and fluidity in his movements and essentially change his life.
I had a lot of people around to help, Cabrera said. A good group of people and they worked with me. I just asked them how can I get my knee healthy and get my body right? It was difficult, but I had good people around me and we had good communication.
At the center of Cabreras village was Adam Boily, owner and president of The System8 gym in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Id known him from years before, but I hadnt seen him for a year or two, said Boily, who was in Lakeland on Saturday watching Cabrera and the Tigers in the Grapefruit League opener. He contacted me and he said hes got to get back in shape and get back to his younger self. I said, Cool.
We put a lot of individual attention on him. But the main thing, especially for us in our program, were really big on nutrition. We have probably the best nutritionist in the world, in my opinion.
It was Scott Getman, who somehow convinced Cabrera to trade in his arepas for kale smoothies and switch to a plant-based, anti-inflammatory diet.
Miggy is in a place where he can really fine tune (his diet) with the organic and best products out there. Boily said. And thats what we focused on.
Getman also worked with the Tigers nutritionist and chef to devise a diet program that Cabrera can use during the season, when meals are often consumed late after ballgames.
His main concern was, he feels good now but its just spring training, Boily said. What about the season? He said he didnt know what he could eat, especially after games. We needed something fine-tuned for him.
We went back to the nutritionist and came up with a pregame and postgame meal plan. He has that now.
Once the weight started falling off, Boily could get to work on the strength and conditioning.
One of the main things was, he bought in right away, Boily said. His legs needed to be good and healthy. And along with the diet change comes decreasing inflammation. That just goes to overall health. So, OK, he bought in, got his chef and nutritionist, got his food dialed in.
He feels good, his body fat is down, hes got a six-pack all that stuff. And hes got the energy that comes along with that. We were able to harness that and we could get more done in training.
Cabrera started adding sets and exercises to his sessions which, as Boily said, helped further adapt his body to handle stress. Which will help the work he put in this offseason carry further into the season, at least in theory.
The weight loss also helped him increase his overall flexibility, which led Boily to tailor specific exercises that would help Cabrera get back to his normal swing mechanics, which were altered to deal with the pain the past three years.
With the decrease in inflammation in his joints, he was able to feel more comfortable getting into his position, Boily said. Its called compensation. If the right side is not properly operating or has pain, your tendency is to compensate and thats what you were seeing with his swing.
We were able to get that away. He felt more comfortable getting a new range of motion. And what that does is help with longevity. Its like rotating the tires on your car.
Cabrera is still working through some kinks, but it was clear in his first few batting practice sessions that he was better able to keep his weight back on his right knee and turn on the ball, something he was unable to do last year.
I dont want to change my swing anymore, Cabrera said earlier this spring. I want to be natural. The last three years I changed my swing a lot to feel comfortable at home plate, so I dont feel like something is bothering me.
I want to go out there and feel natural. Dont think about anything and just react.
Hes getting there.
He knows how his body is supposed to feel and once he started to feel it, it was on, Boily said. Now hes bought in and I think hes going to be like this the rest of his career.

Heavy issues: ‘I’d think there was something wrong with anyone who found me attractive’ – The Guardian

I am 45, 165kg and lonely. I am struggling to lose weight despite the adverse impact on my health. I desperately want to have the confidence to meet someone, but loathe myself so much, I would think there was something deeply wrong with anyone who found me attractive.
I have never developed a sexual or fantasy life, largely due to my weight, but intermittently go on dating apps which help only briefly. I sometimes end up having explicit conversations with men I have no intention of meeting or pursuing in any meaningful way. This often feels overwhelming but has been the case for so long (nearly 20 years) that any route out feels impossible. I otherwise have a good life, a great job and lovely friends, but this feeling of loneliness pervades and keeps me stuck. Id love to think things can change but then remember my limits each day, keeping me in this place. Any thoughtful ideas would be much appreciated.
I go to a gym populated by a lot of very type A people, the type who prop briefing papers on the elliptical so they can do two things at once to fill the void. The gym managers are the same and every holiday they put up a sign for a Maintain your weight! challenge.
Valentines Day, Christmas, Easter: weigh yourself on the gyms double-decimal scale before the holiday and if you come back weighing the same amount you win a prize. Extra points if you weigh less.
Its ghoulishly emblematic of the moralising we do around food and weight, as though weighing more is so capital-B Bad that theres no question of it being justified by sharing cake with your family or chocolates with your partner. Its a bizarre dissonance: so many of lifes joys are structured around food, and we are so angry when we look like we might have enjoyed it.
Nobody is more brutalised by this than people whose bodies read like signs of indulgence.
What breaks my heart most about your letter is that you seem to believe this conflation between weight and moral worth. You seem to really think that youll deserve love only when you weigh a particular number.
I could say the thing thats obvious, which is that you do not deserve the loathing you have dealt yourself, and you can ask the friends youre rightly proud of if you dont believe me.
But I want you to hear something slightly less obvious: beware of stories that begin with Ill deserve love when Often theyre just dressed up stories about why well never get it. The when gets more and more specific and harder to satisfy until it serves as a perpetual justification for the sentence of unlovability weve already passed on ourselves. This is true for all sorts of things: people who think theyll deserve love once they make money become restlessly unsatisfied with hundreds of thousands of dollars; people who think worth hinges on dressing well become endlessly critical of the clothes they already own.
But its especially, acutely true when it comes to bodies. Every pound lost can be a reminder of the ones still left; every hour in the gym is a reminder that we could do another if we really tried. Whatever weight you are, however your body looks, heres the problem: if you think you deserve love only because you weigh a particular number, and weighing that particular number didnt come easy to you, then its likely to feel like being loved doesnt come naturally to you either.
Keep losing the weight if you want to and if it makes you feel good. But separate this from the mission of finding love, and keep your eyes on the fact that your goal weight is whatever weight youre at when youre living the life you love.
