Sounds wonderful, right? Well, a new version of keto aimed at upping all of these perks has keto fanatics buzzing, but some health and nutrition pros say it may be even more unsustainable than the keto diet you already know. The new version is called Speed Keto, and dietitians aren't exactly recommending it if you're looking to lose weight or start eating healthier.
Still, if you're curious about the eating plan and its origin, here's what you need to know.
Basically, Speed Keto is a combination of the traditional keto diet (made up of 60 to 70 percent fat, 15 to 30 percent protein, and 5 to 10 percent carbs) and intermittent fasting (IF), which involves alternating between various periods of fasting and eating. One of the most common styles of IF is the 16:8 method , in which you fast for 16 hours and can eat during the 8-hour period that follows.
When it comes to Speed Keto, the goal is to get the dieter down to one meal per day, which also has to fit into the keto guidelines of being high-fat and low-carb. The goal of eating less carbs is to get the body into a state of ketosis, which is when your body burns fat, instead of carbohydrate stores, for fuel, which can lead to weight loss.
Speed Keto, which you can buy as a digital program , was created by Harlan Kilstein, an expert coach and motivator with a doctor of education degree, according to his website. Per the site, Speed Keto is meant to simplify the dieting process and help people get past weight-loss plateaus that might occur after eating a traditional keto diet for a few weeks.
"I think keto and 'Speed Keto' diets will result in weight loss," says Hillary Cecere, registered dietitian at Eat Clean Bro . "Any time food is restricted and a calorie deficit occurs, so will weight loss, and when your eating window is smaller, you are more likely to consume less calories."
That being said, Cecere doesn't support the diet as a healthy way of eating. "This diet is unsustainable. Once it's no longer being utilized, weight gain will happen," Cecere says. "I also think it eliminates a lot of nutrient-dense foods . This diet is not for health or longevityit's only for quick weight loss."
In order to maintain weight loss, it's crucial that the diet you follow is something you can sustain long-term, notes Cecere. And if eating keto in general isn't your cup of tea, that's totally fine, too. "You don't need to be in ketosis to lose weight," she says. "Weight loss is determined by calorie deficitthere are plenty of other healthy, sustainable ways to lose weight if that's something you're interested in."
It's also worth noting that combining keto and intermittent fasting isn't exactly new. Many people have been following a diet that combines the two because eating mostly fats and proteins does fill you up and make it easier to fast between meals. The difference here is that Speed Keto recommends a specific IF schedule and one meal a day.
"Combining a super restrictive diet with long periods of non-eating is not good," Scott Keatley, RD, of Keatley Medical Nutrition Therapy , previously told WH . The body will cannibalize its own muscle for energy if intake from food is too low but the body does not differentiate between something like a calf muscle or a heart muscle. Keatley added that all your important organs are made of smooth muscle, "and going on a diet like this may harm something like your bladder or lungs just as much as provide fat loss."
It's also worth noting that following a regular keto diet can already have some not-so-pleasant side effects . At the end of the day, whether you want to follow a keto eating plan is up to you, but experts generally warn against pairing keto with an extreme intermittent fasting schedule in the way that the Speed Keto diet does, experts caution. Whatever you choose diet-wise, it's always wise to talk to a dietitian or trusted MD before you drastically overhaul your eating plan.
The bottom line: Speed Keto may not be a sustainable option when it comes to weight loss.

Is stevia a healthy alternative? Everything you should know – ZME Science

An herbal plant of the Asteraceae family, stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) has been used for over 1,500 years by indigenous communities in South America as a sugar substitute, a tea, a medicine, and a sweet tea. Now, stevia can be found in any supermarket as an alternative sweetener.
But is it actually healthier?
Most of the stevia products that can be found on shelves at the grocery stores dont actually contain the whole stevia leaf. Instead, they are made from a highly refined stevia leaf extract, known as Reb-A, which is about 200 times sweeter than the table sugar.
Ground leaf stevia is the least processed and probably the healthier choice. The leaves are dried and then grounded into powder, creating a product only 10 to 15 times sweeter than sugar. Nevertheless, it hasnt been approved by the FDA yet as more research is needed to ensure its safety.
For someone trying to lose weight, stevia could be appealing as its a non-nutritive sweetener, which means it has no calories. The reason why it has no calories is that our body doesnt try to digest it stevia simply passes through our digestive system without being broken down for energy.
Also, for those who have diabetes, stevia could help to maintain the blood sugar levels in check. A 2010 study showed that stevia lowered insulin and glucose levels because it has no sugars in it (or rather, none that our body digests).
Stevia leaf powder can also help to manage cholesterol levels, according to a 2009 study, which found that stevia lowered total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (the bad one) and triglycerides with no negative effect also increasing HDL cholesterol (the good one).
According to the FDA, stevia sweeteners, such as the ones containing Reb-A, are generally safe. However, the FDA hasnt given the green light for whole-leaf stevia or crude stevia extract to use in processed food or beverages yet, claiming theres a lack of safety information.
Back in 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) said stevia was safe to consume 4 mg per kilogram corresponding with the persons body weight every day. This equals to 3.5 to 9 teaspoons of the pure extract more than enough for a couple of cups of coffee or tea.
Consuming sugar in excess is usually associated with several negative side effects such as heart problems, diabetes and weight gain. This is the main appeal of stevia: it can serve as a replacement for sugar, without the calories. But its not the only sugar replacement.
Aspartame is also a popular sweetener that can be found in most of the diet sodas and so-called sugar-free foods. Despite not having calories (just as stevia), aspartame has been linked to a number health problems and it can contribute to depression and headaches. While the full extent of these problems is still under investigation (and both aspartame and stevia have come under fire for potentially playing a part in the obesity crisis despite having no calories), stevia seems somewhat safer than aspartame at this point.
Sucralose is also a popular sweeten er, which has been marketed as a healthy alternative to aspartame since it was approved in the 1990s. Nevertheless, studies showed problems with it, as the body metabolizes it differently. A 2013 study showed sucralose can generate toxins when exposed to high temperatures, and the potential health issues associated with sucralose are very controversial.
In order to avoid artificial sweeteners, many choose products sweetened with sugar alcohols such as xylitol and sorbitol. They dont cause spikes in blood sugar but can be associated with digestive side effects such as diarrhea. They are mostly extracted from genetically modified corn.
Finally, besides stevia, there are plenty of other substitutes out there, such as honey, dates, coconut sugar, banana puree, brown rice syrup, and real fruit jam all of which can be replacements for sugar. However, they contain different types of sugars themselves (such as fructose), and as a result, they increase the blood sugar in a fairly similar way to sugar itself, and should therefore be consumed in moderation.
Stevia can be used instead of table sugar in most foods and beverages. Just a pinch of stevia powder is the same as one teaspoon of table sugar. Some ways to use it include in coffee or tea, in lemonade, in hot or cold cereal, in yogurt, and in a smoothie.
Stevia can also be used for baked goods, but it usually gives cakes and cookies an aftertaste similar to liquor. The amount to use depends on the brand. Generally speaking, for most stevia products, you can simply replace sugar with an equal amount of stevia for same results.
Nevertheless, not all brands are made specifically for baking, so it might be better to use fewer, as some stevia products are very potent. As in most cases, it might need trial and error to get the level of sweetness and textured wanted.
All humans have taste buds on the tongue, which contain receptors to identify bitter and sweet components. In the case of stevia, its chemical components interact with the sweet and the bitter receptors and this causes stevias bitter after state.
Of course, everyones taste is different, and this can affect different people din different ways. Researchers are working to identify the sweetest chemical compounds in stevia and also to breed the sweetest possible version of the plant itself. Aside from Reb-A, there are many compounds that are produced in the leaves of the plant that have more sweer properties such as the stevioside and Reb-B.
Stevia that is manufactured with Reb-A can be used during pregnancy but in moderation. Those who are sensitive to sugar alcohol should use a brand that doesnt contain erythritol.
On the other hand, it is not safe to use whole-leaf stevia or crude stevia extract during pregnancy. Reb-A was assessed for its safety during pregnancy, while theres not enough evidence to know if other types of stevia are safe to use.
There is some evidence available that suggests stevia can help to fight or prevent some types of cancer. A study in 2012 found that stevia plants can help boost cancer cell death in a human breast can cancer line and help decrease mitochondrial pathways that help cancer expand. Also, in 2013, another study backed those same findings.
All stevia products that are manufactured with Reb-A are considered safe, even for people who have diabetes or are pregnant, rarely causing side effects. Nevertheless, more research is needed to judge its effects on weight and other health issues. Its also important to remember that stevia is much sweeter than table sugar or other sweeteners, so its not necessary to use as much.
Meanwhile, whole-leaf stevia is seen by many as an alternative and safe choice to table sugar or to refined stevia. But more research is needed to establish its safety for all groups of people. In the meantime, its best to check with your doctor before using it.
The best thing to do is to reduce the consumption of sugar or replacements as much as possible, and when you do need to consume sugar or replacements such as stevia, do so in moderation.

New Fitness Studio in Olympia Geared Toward Female Fitness – ThurstonTalk

Tiffany Krueger and Joanna Sather know how to guide a body into good health. Collectively, theyve been doing it for over two decades as Certified Personal Trainers and Certified Group Fitness Instructors. As females in the fitness industry, they recognize the need for female-centric fitness and have created a new fitness studio in Olympia, Athena Fitness and Wellness, that is redefining feminine fitness. Through small group training, large group fitness classes, wellness services, and a community of women for support, working out in Thurston County never felt so good.
Historically, Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom. Their logo, an owl, was often a sign of the goddess, who was a symbol of sisterhood, power and courage. These are the characteristics that Tiffany and Joannas fitness studio on Pacific Avenue is bursting with, and the bright and airy space is a joint venture between a team of five investors and their spouses.
The fitness studio is open to everyone, with no exclusions, but the exercises and wellness services are targeted toward the female body. The female body is different than the male body, and it needs to be trained that way, Tiffany says. The education that we provide for body care, hormones, nutrition all of that, is geared toward females.
Athena is also doing something very different from other studios in the area, and is deeply and genuinely focused on creating connections. Over our years in the fitness industry, Tiffany says, we have seen how women need a community of other women for support, because thats really the number one thing to keep people coming back. We are doing fitness here yes, but really the number one thing we are doing is building community.
Joanna experienced the power of community support three years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Feeling connected and supported was so important in treatment and recovery, she says, as well as with living life after cancer and dealing with the side effects of ongoing treatment and anxieties.
The fitness community helped Joanna stay active and keep wellness a priority. After eight surgeries in two years, shes also learned what its like to rest and take care of her body and to come back to fitness in a gentle way. Shes looking forward to passing this knowledge on to others at Athena.
Athena offers many different fitness styles. Small group personal training is led by Certified Personal Trainers who lead the daily workouts throughout the day, on the hour. These classes are limited to no more than 16. The cross-training workout is circuit-style and uses TRX suspension training, kettlebells, slam balls and more. Three different variations are offered throughout the week.
The large group fitness classes can accommodate up to 30 people and are led by Certified Group Fitness Instructors. They use Les Mills Group Fitness repertoire and offer BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT, BODYFLOW, CXWORX, and BODYSTEP. Athena is the only fitness studio in our area to offer LES MILLS GRIT Strength and LES MILLS GRIT Cardio, 30-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts.
Athena also offers dance fitness in a class created by Athena instructor, Rebecca. High energy dance fitness and athletic inspired moves are combined in an easy-to-follow class. Or, slow it down a little with a gentle yoga class designed to increase strength, flexibility and equanimity.
Athena recognizes that overall wellness is more than just working out and provides services that complement the experience. A Licensed Massage Practitioner will be on staff, in addition to a Certified Nutritionist.
Inside Athena will be our areas first Himalayan Salt Room, encompassing over 6,000 pounds of salt. With walls lined with Himalayan salt blocks and over three inches of granulated salt on the floor, it also has a halogenerator that, regulates the amount of salt microparticles in the air, Tiffany says, so youre breathing salt.
Salt is antimicrobial and antibacterial. It strengthens and expands lung function, is good for skin, and helps detoxify the body. Our cells move things by chemical charges, Tiffany shares, and the radiation we receive from Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G even radio frequencies, disrupts our body on a cellular level. She says the salt room helps to neutralize these electromagnetic frequencies by offering a negatively-charged source of grounding. It heals you from the inside out.
Tiffany and Joanna see the importance of offering salt therapy to the whole community and anyone may access this one-of-kind salt room with a small fee, even if they are not members of the fitness studio. The salt room is also ADA accessible.
Athena offers a supervised play space for children six-months to seven-years-old. Childcare can be booked in advance in predetermined time slots for a drop-in rate or a monthly unlimited rate, but care can only be utilized for two hours per day. We dont really want you working out more than two hours a day anyway, Tiffany says. At Athena its about being kind, loving and gentle to bodies.
Athena also offers a designated space for older or independent children. There will be a table where they can work on homework or activities, while observing a valuable life lesson when they see their mothers and caregivers making space for themselves, connecting, and taking care of their bodies.
February 27, at 5:00 p.m. the community is invited to a ribbon-cutting with Mayor Ryder and the Lacey Chamber of Commerce. Therell be refreshments, a raffle with prizes, including a one-year membership to Athena. Childcare will be open, and at 6:30 p.m. therell be a pop-up fitness dance class.
Athena uses the MindBody app where you can reserve space in a class, schedule childcare and process payments. A full schedule of offerings is available on their website and through MindBody. Visit the Athena website for details or call 360-515-5723. Your first class is always free.
We recognize the deep need for connection in general, Tiffany says. Were shopping online, were working out online, were doing everything online but we are designed to connect as humans. When we are working out together, and we smile at each other, that releases positive neuro-transmitters that have a full-body effect, and thats real.

Akin Akman’s Aarmy Might Be Next Great Group Fitness Cult – GQ

If youve got $40 or so to spend on a fitness class, youre not hurting for options in Manhattans tiny NoHo neighborhood. Theres SoulCycle, of course, or Mile High Run Club if you prefer the treadmill. Theres Barrys Bootcamp and Bar Method and Work Train Fight. If you want to box, theres Overthrow Boxing Club, Rumble, and Bia Force. If youd rather bang out some sun salutations, theres a Yoga Vida. If you simply cannot decide between yoga and boxing, theres Box and Flow, which combines the two. It might be the greatest concentration of upscale fitness studios in the world.
But none of these studios have Akin Akman. Hes a co-founder and the chief fitness officer of Aarmy, the newest arrival to the neighborhood. Hes a trainer, sure, but to many people, he is also a spiritual leader and a guru and a guiding light. I first heard about him on a blind date with a guy who works at Nike, who told me over beers about a famous SoulCycle instructor, one whose followers call themselves Akins Army. I looked him up after and discovered that he had recently left SoulCycle to co-found a cycling slash bootcamp pop-up training facility with Angela Davis, an inspirational speaker and fellow former SoulCycle instructor, a favorite of Oprah and Beyonc, along with Trey Laird, the founder of the creative agency Laird+Partners. Already, Aarmy inductees include Usher and Janelle Mone (there is also an Aarmy pop-up in L.A.).
So I signed up for one of the 40 practices (classes) that Akman coaches (teaches) a week. Up until my visit to Aarmy, I had managed to go through life without ever having taken a spin class. Almost everyone I spoke with used the word energy to describe why they prefer Akmans style and ethos, but it is precisely the energy of spin that scares me. The whooping, the lights. All the beautiful people.
At first, Akmans class seemed no different. As two employees helped buckle in my shoes, the riders all around me whipped their towels in the air like Petey Pablo. But it didnt take long for me to be won over, to let go and appreciate Akmans philosophy: he wants to pull out my greatness. He wants to speak to my mind and my heart and get to the bottom of who I am and what makes me tick. He believes I am an athlete even though I can barely run a mile or do five push-ups and sometimes get winded walking up the stairs to my apartment. It was clear the rest of the group had already bought in: in between hills or sprints, when Akman delivered an at ease, soldiers, nobody rolled their eyesthey gave each other high-fives. Akman spoke to us about reaching our potential and finding our joy and being blessed to live our beautiful lives. An actual spotlight shined on him.
Afterwards, I sat down with Akman on the cycling stage, while the cleaning crew wiped down the bikes. He is possibly the only person I have met who looks better sweating than not. He told me the army began a decade ago, when he was teaching at a Crunch gym in New York. His classes were so well-liked that if he subbed out to take a modeling gig, chaos would ensue. So he started a Facebook page called Akins Army so his followers could be better informed of his schedule. Akman, now 32, got so into the idea that he even screen-printed tank tops at American Apparel for his soldiers. By the time he moved to SoulCycle in 2013, his classes booked in two minutes. He left this past summer because he didnt see any upward mobility.
He had been watching my (incorrect) technique and offered some tips. As he spoke, he looked me right in the eye. I wasnt expecting to be converted. Im not the type of person to buy into daily affirmations. My eyes glaze over whenever I hear the word community, as I did several times when talking to people about Aarmy. I try to avoid anything hyped up on endorphins or pedaling contrived happiness: Disneyland or Bachelorette parties. But all of this makes me Aarmy's exact target novice. There are a lot of cynics in the worldAkman wants them to see the color in their lives.
As I was leaving, he slapped me on the back and welcomed me into the army. And in the following days, as the pain in my knees subsided, I found myself wanting to return. Yes, the class had been a great workout as everyone told me it would. But really, I just wanted Akman to pull out a little more greatness.

SAN ANGELO, Texas Glenmore Elementary School families gathered for a night of fun and fitness at the school Thursday evening.
At the elementary gym, parents and students participated in cardio drumming, zumba, a fun run and more. It was all to raise heart awareness during the month of February.
Different vendors such as Shannon Medical Center, The Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service and more helped with the event to promote physical activity and healthy cooking options.
This is the first time the school hosts Family Fun Night to bring families together in a healthy environment.
Its so great that theyre having fun here. With this cold weather, we might not be getting outside. Theyre smiling in there, the parents are encouraging them. Hopefully they take that home, or on the weekends at the park they take the exercises they learn here and use them at the park, said Tabitha Farmer, the P.E. Coach at the school.
Coach Farmer said the school is looking to make Family Fun Night a yearly event.

Why fitness trackers may not give you all the ‘credit’ you hoped for – Jakarta Post
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
January is a time when many people make resolutions and then break them. Almost 60% of Americans will resolve to exercise more, but fewer than 10% will stick with their resolution. A key to keeping resolutions is ensuring they are measurable, and a simple way to track activity is through a wearable smartwatch or fitness tracker. Indeed, almost one in five adults has used a fitness tracker.
Wearable fitness trackers can also help improve medical care by providing insights into physical activity, heart rate, location and sleep patterns. My research team uses wearable fitness tracker data with smart home sensors to help older adults live safely and independently. We also study wearable fitness tracker data along with electronic medical records and genomic data to investigate the causes of gestational diabetes. Many other researchers utilize wearable fitness trackers to better understand how lifestyles can impact health.
Unfortunately, Ive found in my health informatics research that wearable devices may not give all the credit their users deserve, and in some cases, users may want to consider how secure and private their data is.
Giving credit when its due
People who use fitness trackers have been frustrated with how they get credit for their activities, which drives some users to abandon fitness trackers. In my research teams work, we find that people who have limited arm movement report that fitness trackers are not accurately recording their activities. This can happen as well with those who do not have traditional gaits because they may shuffle.
The lack of credit is especially obvious when people are walking but keeping their arms still such as pushing a stroller or walking while holding an infant. New mothers also report accuracy issues with respect to their sleep patterns. When they wake up multiple times a night, the next morning the device will show them as lightly sleeping. This is frustrating when the new mother wants to use this data to negotiate with her partner on child care because a device may credit the mother with more sleep than she actually gets.
These inaccuracies make sense from a technical point of view. When people keep their wrists still, as in pushing a stroller, the wrist is not changing directions. Thus, the software cannot detect changes in movement from the accelerometer sensor on a wrist tracker which is looking for changes in up-down, forward-backward and side-to-side movements. Researchers have also shown that 500 or fewer steps can be recorded without wearing the device, reflecting how devices can over count activity sometimes. In the case of detecting sleep, most people do not wake up multiple times a night, so the algorithms used by wearable devices may throw these short bursts of movement away.
The companies that make these wearable devices have significant intellectual property involved in detecting these movements and then using algorithms to decide how much people are moving or sleeping, so these algorithms are not shared publicly. There currently do not exist any mechanisms to give feedback on what was detected. Imagine if a person could push a button and tell a wearable fitness device, I did wake up three times tonight!
Since people are not getting the credit they deserve for some of their activities, I am concerned about what type of lifestyle data we researchers can accurately assess from a commodity wearable for our health research. In computing, there is a saying, Garbage in, garbage out. If wearable fitness trackers are putting inaccurate step and sleep data into the algorithms that quantify our activities, then people will be making health-related decisions based on inaccurate data.
Who has the data?
Typically, consumers assess how much credit they are getting from a fitness tracker by transferring the data to an app. Most people likely assume that when people transfer the data to the app, the data is not shared widely. Users may assume, for instance, that they can see the data, people they shared data with can view it and the company who has the device and app can see the data. But this is only part of the story.
A company, however, could change its terms of service which, studies have shown, people have difficulty understanding and decide to make this health data available to third parties. For example, wearable fitness data could be sold to help our employers understand our fitness and productivity or insurance companies to assist with or deny health coverage. Although theres no evidence of this practice being done, I believe consumers would do well to be aware that it is a possibility in the future.

Wodapalooza Miami started in 2012, as a 1-day competition with 145 athletes, and has now become the worlds premier functional fitness festival. Spectators and competitors now travel from around the world for the four-day event every February. Its the most highly-attended Sanctional of the CrossFit season and offers elite athletes a rich prize purse.
Being on the ground in Bayfront Park, the site of the event, it feels like more than that though. Heres how a few of the spectators described the draw of Wodapalooza on Thursday:
Fan favorites, the Buttery Bros. premiered their newest documentary The Fittest on Wednesday evening before the start of the competition at a Miami theatre packed with CrossFit enthusiasts. They have a big presence at the event and heres how they described it:
By the numbers: Theres no doubt that Wodapalooza has grown in popularity and participation. Its the flagship event for Loud And Live, who will host five Sanctionals in total this season. According to Loud And Live media director, Kristin Chandler Toth, there are 2700 athletes competing in the event this year across all divisions, an increase of 750 from 2019. And Matthew OKeefe, President of Loud And Live Sports, estimates that there will be approximately 40-45,000 spectators across all four days, an increase of as many as 10,000 from last year.
The words of CrossFit Lorton affiliate owner, Hanna Hawkins, who is making her second trip the event, but first as a competitor, encapsulate OKeefes sentiments perfectly:

Planet Fitness will be the anchor tenant in the renovation and redevelopment of the former Dillons store at the southwest corner of East Madison and North Rock Road, according to one of the leasing agents.
There has been speculation that the business was possible for Derby. Now the signing of it was confirmed by Mattie Crossland, director of real estate for the Crossland Realty Group in Columbus, Kan.
Crossland said that her company and its officials were pleased about landing the national fitness chain as a tenant and helping to grow Derby as well as assisting in filling a long-empty building.
We believe community members are excited for retail to return to this corner and, so far, the response to the development has been overwhelmingly positive, Crossland said in an email. Having access to health and fitness facilities is important to a thriving community.
This would be the fifth Planet Fitness in the metro area. No opening date was provided, however, the building renovation will be complete by this summer.
Other business spaces available
Crossland Realty Group and J.P. Weigand are partnering to lease spaces in the 52,551-square-foot building. The contractor is Crossland Construction and the architect is GLMV Architecture.
As designed, the new design will offer retail, entertainment, and restaurant space. Crossland said it will give the local area an updated look with new storefronts, faade, and patio hardscaping.
The hope is that the development will give the corner new life, she said.
Currently, work is underway at the building and a $450,000 city building permit has been taken out to remodel the shell. Work had previously been done on the roof. When completed, the value of the work will be in the $1 million-plus range.
According to county property tax records, the building has an appraisal of $1.5 million.
The structure was built in 1992 and housed two antique markets after Dillons left to open a larger store in the Derby Marketplace. The last antique market concept closed in January 2017.
Founded in 1992, Hampton, N.H.-based Planet Fitness has more than 1,800 outlets. By locations and membership, it is one of the larger fitness and health clubs along with being among the fastest growing. Its a franchise system and thelocal franchisee is Chris Sutherland.
