Great-gran sees incredible 6st weight loss after ditching daily glasses of wine – Yahoo News

Angela Dimmer weighed 17st 2lb at her heaviest but has since seen a 6st weight loss. (Caters)

A great-grandma has shared her incredible 6st (38kg) weight loss after overhauling her diet and ditching her daily glasses of wine.

Angela Dimmer, 77, from Bristol, says she decided to switch up her lifestyle after seeing her weight creep up to 17st 2lbs (109kg) following the loss of her late husband, John, in 2007.

While she previously enjoyed a few large glasses of wine every evening alongside her favourite fish and chip takeaway, Dimmer decided to take action after noticing her health had started to decline, leaving her struggling to walk and with a diabetes diagnosis.

Now, however, she says she has a new lease of life after reaching a healthier 11st 2lbs (71kg) and seeing her diabetes reverse.

"I've always been on the bigger side, but when I lost my husband, my weight kept creeping up," she explains.

While she used to have an alcohol-free Monday, Dimmer says she'd enjoy a few glasses of wine every other day of the week and perhaps more on weekends.

"I'd probably have about four bottles of wine a week," she says.

"I didn't eat particularly unhealthy foods, but I would have large portions and would treat myself to my favourite takeaways, including fish and chips and McDonald's breakfasts."

But Dimmer says the weight gain ended up causing her pain and leaving her unable to stand for very long.

"I started to realise I couldn't walk," she adds. "I even ended up being diagnosed with diabetes."

As well as her health, her size started to have an impact on her self-esteem.

"I would buy big clothes to try and hide my figure," she says.

"I hated going into shops and not knowing if anything would fit me. I was a size 22-24, and it was hard to find anything that I liked."

The turning point came when Dimmer decided she wanted to lose weight for an upcoming holiday to Dubai.

"I wanted to be able to put the tray down without my belly getting in the way," she explains.

"But I also realised it was about time that I did something about my weight once and for all."

Within the first week of starting the 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan, Dimmer lost an impressive 7.5lbs, and by the time she went away on holiday five months later she'd lost an impressive 3st.

She says that it was a huge incentive to see her dress size and weight decrease on the scales.

"Thankfully I have good willpower, so when I say I am going to do something, I just do it," she says. "It meant I found it easy to stick to my plan."

And Dimmer says the impact has been "life-changing".

"I can now do a four-mile walk three times a week, and I have joined a gym where I go to aqua fit classes and circuit training classes," she explains.

"Now I can't sit down for too long now because I feel guilty and I like to be out walking."

Her weight loss has had an impact on her shopping habits too.

"It's wonderful to be able to walk into clothes shops and buy what I like," she explains. "I am now wearing size 12s, which I never imagined would be possible.

"I also wear things that I never would have chosen before, and it was so fun buying myself a whole new wardrobe."

Dimmer is sharing her story in a bid to help show people that it's never too late to change your life.

"I think it is amazing that I have been able to do this at this stage of my life," she says. "I did it for different reasons, such as my health rather than aesthetics, but the way my body looks now is a bonus.

"I'm so much more active now and I am so happy I have been able to reverse my diabetes.

"I feel brilliant."

Research states that Abdominal Obesity appears to be a better indicator of diabetic risk than BMI. Further, the coexistence of diabetes with obesity causes an increase in the risk of heart disease, stroke, nerve and kidney damage.

Dr. Meghana Pasi, Nutrition Consultant, Arogya World MyThali Program says, The increased prevalence of both obesity and diabetes is attributed to a combination of genetic factors along with environmental and lifestyle changes resulting from industrialization and migration, a high-calorie but nutrient-poor diet and low physical activity.

6 ways to manage your weight if you are a diabetic:

Avoid simple carbohydrates like refined sugar, sweets, cola, and juices, which cause an immediate spike in blood sugar. Minimize the use of processed and refined foods like white rice, bread, pizza, breakfast cereals, pastries, and pasta. Note that these foods contain less fiber and other nutrients and give more calories which leads to weight gain.

Glycemic index(GI) indicates the blood sugar raising effect of a food compared to that of reference food (glucose having a GI of 100). Low GI (55 and below) foods like pulses, dals, milk, soyabean provide a minimal increase in blood glucose whereas, foods with a high GI (above 70) like wheat, rice, root veggies, colas, noodles lead to a rapid rise in blood sugar and hence should be avoided, says Dr. Pasi.

According to Dr. Pasi, Consume baked goodies at home rather than purchasing from the market. This will help cut down not only on sugars but also hydrogenated oil/vanaspati oil and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Do not overeat even if it's your favourite food. Take longer to chew and use smaller plates so that you can reduce the portion of food on the plate. If you are a non-vegetarian then prefer lean meats and fish. Go for steamed, sauteed or grilled veggies in place of veggies with creamy gravies. Go for some healthy and nutritious soup instead of any alcoholic drink at a party or when you dine out.

Physical activity helps you control your weight, uses up sugar for energy, and helps the body use insulin more effectively. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous exercise, advises Dr. Pasi.

Shoppers say they’re losing weight in days thanks to hula hoop TikTok trend – Manchester Evening News

We're never too far away from the next exercise fad are we, but shoppers say they've found one that actually works.

Weighted hula hoops from the likes of K-mart have become a massive hit in recent months, with users saying they've helped them shed weight and taken inches off their waistline.

It's basically a hoop made up of 24 detachable parts, which you can add or remove to make it fit around your waist.

Each part has a soft rubber massage head, which massages your muscles as you move and is said to 'burn fat quickly' while 'eliminating fatigue'.

It's not hula hooping in the traditional sense and is easier to use, as this one won't fall down.

And according to the thousands of five-star reviews on Amazon, the results are pretty impressive.

Just last week, one woman posted describing it as 'a craze that actually seems to work'.

"Eating a sensible diet, which I was eating previously, after 6 days, I have lost half a stone!" she said.

"I hoop for 30 minutes a day, without a break. I can also hula hoop with a conventional hoop, but it takes up more room and is frustrating when you lose the rhythm and have to pick it up.
