Sure, I Lost 10 Pounds Doing Orangetheory Fitness, but It’s Not Always the Scale That Matters – POPSUGAR

Ever since I graduated college six years ago, my weight has truly been all over the place. When I left school, I weighed in at about 120 pounds. And while I was certainly thin, I wasn't exactly taking the best care of myself. In the years since, thanks to working out inconsistently and having a desk job, I packed on 32 pounds. Because it was a gradual gain, I didn't notice it at first. But when I stepped on the scale in late December and realized I was 152 pounds, I knew something needed to change.

While I knew at 5'4" I wasn't disastrously overweight, the fact that I had been getting a little too much into the wine and cheese since my July wedding hit me like a burst of cold water. As a former college athlete, I knew I could do a lot more to improve my overall health, and I desperately wanted to carve out new healthy habits.

While my foray into Orangetheory Fitness started with the goal of simply shedding some pounds, it quickly became much, much more. I first learned about OTF when POPSUGAR's Senior Editor Kate Schweitzer made it a regular habit. After having two gorgeous daughters, she started hitting classes five times per week at her local studio. And while she's always been in good shape, it was hard to deny how toned her arms had gotten during our weekly meetings.

Fortunately, Kate wasn't the only person who was drinking the Orangetheory Kool-Aid; Sarah Wasilak, our fashion editor, also went to class a few times per week. And thankfully, she not only attended our local studio in Jersey City, but she also enthusiastically offered to take me to my first class. As a person who had generally loathed group exercise classes in the past, I was eager to try an OTF class but overwhelmed. Why did they need to track your heart rate the entire time? What in god's name are Splat points?

Nervous but cautiously optimistic, I headed to my first class with Sarah one day at 7 a.m. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by studio employee Wesley Barranco, who had one simple question for me: "What's your goal?" After confessing my love of cheese I kept the wine out of the convo for obvious reasons and telling him about my weight-loss goals, he gave me a confident smile and the rundown. While his spiel was certainly informative, I didn't at any point feel intimidated, which is key for those trying to get back on the fitness horse.

Eventually, I was introduced to Herlentz Mesidor, the head coach of the studio and the person who'd no doubt be bossing me around for an hour. As the big kahuna, Herlentz is obviously a very fit man. It's also worth noting that he is one of the few people on god's green earth who can pull off wearing a sweatband on his head.

Herlentz spent 15 minutes teaching me how the class is formatted and had me jump on a rowing machine to evaluate my form. (Spoiler alert: I've been rowing incorrectly for my entire life!). After getting set up with an OTbeat wearable device, we got to it, and honestly, I was amazed.

While I normally get bored in classes that just focus on cardio, the three-pronged format OTF offers time spent running, rowing, and lifting weights really suited me. Additionally, Herlentz didn't scream into the microphone the entire time. On top of pumping us up, he also made his rounds to ensure we were lifting with the correct form and using the treadmills properly.

At the end of my first class, I'd burned 650 calories. I've never had a more efficient workout since I played lacrosse in college. On top of that, I truly felt great. Maybe it was the endorphins, but I immediately signed up for a package of classes and have been going two or three days per week ever since.

While my initial goal was to lose weight and hey, it still very much is! in just five weeks, my body has begun to transform. I have noticed more muscle tone in my legs, and I've lost considerable weight in my face. I feel more confident in a bathing suit, and when I sit on a hard chair, my tush feels . . . perkier? Although the sensation is hard to explain, it sure feels good!

More importantly, my fitness goals have been turned on their head. Thanks to the treadmill portion of Orangetheory, I've cut a full minute off my mile time. In fact, on a six-mile run earlier this week, my average pace clocked in at 8:26. That's pretty good for me! Feeling more confident than I have in years, I officially bit the bullet and signed up for a half-marathon. Although I've toyed with the idea in the past, injuries have always gotten in the way. Because of OTF, I'm very much looking forward to running my first race.

Thanks to the welcoming and nonintimidating community I've found at OTF, I've learned that there's something powerful about testing your physical limits. Sure, I've lost 10 pounds, but it's not just about getting in a good sweat. Rather, it's about self-improvement and conquering goals, whether you're trying to beat your personal 2,000-meter row record or simply get back into jogging again. Have I met my official weight-loss goal yet? No, but Orangetheory gives me the confidence to keep on trying.

Brown University, Miriam Hospital studying new device that records what you eat – WPRI.com

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) A new study taking place at Brown University takes the expression watch what you eat to a whole new level.

Associate Professor Graham Thomas said theyre currently researching whether a wearable device can help people lose weight.

Thomas said a new device developed at the University of Alabama, called an Automatic Ingestion Monitor, can automatically monitor peoples eating habits. The device is a sensor that attaches to a pair of eyeglasses.

A study of the new device is being conducted in several phases and involves a team of universities and organizations, including Brown and The Miriam Hospital Weight Control and Diabetes Research Center.

Thomas said in phase one, which is about to start, participants will wear the device for a week.

We will use the data in a machine-learning algorithm to teach it how to learn folks patterns of eating, Thomas said.

The device, according to Thomas, is also supposed to track bad eating habits, such as not eating much during the day and overeating at night.

If the first phase of the study goes well, phase two will allow participants to hook the device up to Bluetooth so they can receive eating times and suggestions on their smartphone.

Post-Doctoral Fellow Stephanie Goldstein said shes helping with the study because of her passion for health and technology.

She said the setup for the study is painless and the device is easy to use.

You really quickly forget about it, Goldstein said. I just ate my apple and I felt really good about it and ready to move on with my day, Goldstein said.

The study will likely be conducted over the course of several years.

How to get rid of visceral fat: Four foods proven to banish the dangerous belly fat – Express

Visceral fat, as opposed to subcutaneous fat, lies deep inside the body and is a type of fat many leading health experts stress about how dangerous it is due to its proximity to vital organs making it potentially life-threatening. Visceral fat has been linked to metabolic disturbances and increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Fortunately, certain foods help to reduce visceral fat, keep you feeling fuller for longer and not high in calories - here are four such foods.

Research shows that coconut oil doesnt negatively impact blood lipid levels like once believed and it may even help to promote a reduction in stomach fat.

The belly fat-fighting properties of coconut oil stem from the amount of medium chain triglycerides contained which are metabolised quickly and therefor stand less of a chance to be stored as adipose, said Kayleen St. John executive director of Nutrition and Strategic Development of Euphebe.

"Fructose has (rightly so) gotten a bad reputation lately for its role in promoting central obesity or belly fat," says St.John.

"However, fructose found in whole foods like fruit does not act so sinisterly in the body. Fresh or frozen raspberries contain a great deal of fibre, which helps to regulate the body's insulin response and also reduce belly fat.

"If a fresh pint comes with a steep price tag at your local grocer, consider buying them frozen: they're cost-effective, last practically forever, and are picked at the peak of freshness."

DONT MISS

Research continues to show the enjoying soup before e axial reduces the total caloric load of that meal, which cancel banish belly fat, says Julieanna Hever, author of The Vegetarian Diet.

Filling up on high-fibre foods like a low-calorie soup is so satisfying that you end up eating less overall, thereby reducing visceral fat.

Like onions and leeks, these green vegetables are prebiotic foods that produce acetate, an acid that turns on the fat-burning activity in the cells by helping them recover from inflammation.

A study published in the International Journal of Obesity compared weight loss after an egg breakfast compared to a bagel breakfast containing similar calories, explains Toby Amidor, author of The Greek Yoghurt Kitchen.

Results found that participants who consumed two eggs in their breakfast while following a lower-calorie diet lost 65 percent more weight and reduced their waist circumference by 34 percent compared with those who were on a similar calorie bagel breakfast.

Eggs are also a great source of protein, which works to keep hunger at bay and curb overeating.

The keto diet: Its highs and lows plus 5 recipes – The Gazette

By Daniel Neman, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

My friends Mike and Robin have been on the keto diet for a couple of years. They lost a ton of weight, and they look fit and trim better than Ive ever seen them, and Ive known them more than 30 years.

Their results are not unusual. The keto diet often leads to rapid weight loss.

The trick lies in keeping it off. Mike and Robin have done it well, but a lot of people cant. And therein lies a problem, according to Jennifer McDaniel, a registered dietitian and the owner of McDaniel Nutrition Therapy in St. Louis.

While you might gain benefits in the short term just like any other restrictive diet, most people like, 90% of the people have trouble staying on it. When they lose the weight and they cant maintain the weight that they attained, thats just another failed diet, she said.

The keto diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrates diet its like the Atkins diet on steroids, McDaniel said. People on the diet strive to consume 70% to 80% of their calories through fats, as little as 5% through carbohydrates and the rest through protein.

This helps us lose weight because it forces our bodies to burn fat for energy instead of its preferred fuel, carbohydrates.

McDaniel recommends that her clients not go on the keto diet. The diet changes the microbiome in their bodies (the bacteria, fungi and more that live inside us). It is difficult for people on the diet to consume enough fiber, which can lead to constipation and other gastrointestinal nastiness. And because carbohydrates hold onto water, people on the diet are often dehydrated, she said.

And yet, as Mike and Robin and thousands of others can attest, it works. So I decided to try a few recipes to see how they tasted.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW ADVERTISEMENT

The rules of the keto diet are highly restrictive, which can make cooking difficult. You need to avoid fruit, sugars, grains, beans and legumes, rice, potatoes, candy and juice.

Ingredients to be encouraged include meat, fatty fish, eggs, butter and cream, cheese, nuts and seeds, certain oils (olive, avocado, coconut) and low-carb vegetables most green vegetables, tomatoes, onions, peppers and the like.

Its a lot to take in, so I began with a simple and entirely wonderful dish of Citrus-Marinated Olives. These are a marvelous treat, combining the heady earthiness of olives with bright notes of orange and lemon. Though the flavors are disparate, they work surprisingly well together.

Best of all, you make them in mere minutes.

Another winner was Keto Egg Cups, a dish that concisely presents everything that is good about keto cooking: Little cups made from prosciutto hold eggs mixed with cream, spinach, roasted red peppers and mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.

Its a delightful conglomeration of high-fat goodies that come together into a hand-held snack. And its just as fun at room temperature as it is warm.

Two entrees came next. First, I took a recipe for Instant-Pot Keto Mediterranean Chicken and made it a recipe for Keto Mediterranean Chicken Without an Instant Pot. It only took about five minutes longer than the Instant-Pot version, and it was deeply satisfying.

Ill admit, though, that I could not commit to full keto cooking with this one. As written, the recipe calls for searing six chicken thighs and then cooking the dish in the resulting fat.

My six thighs rendered out a half cup of fat. I just couldnt do it. I couldnt cook with and I certainly couldnt eat that much fat. I know the keto diet requires what seems like a shocking amount of fat to work, but I just couldnt see it. I poured out half of the fat, and the dish still felt greasy to me.

Greasy, but delicious. Meaty chicken thighs are paired with olives, capers, oregano and a cutting splash of vinegar. Its presented with a fresh-tasting yogurt sauce, making an impressive presentation. Id happily eat it anytime, especially if I poured out all but one tablespoon of that fat.

The other entree, Keto Breaded Chicken Cutlets, isnt bad but Id only make it again if I were on the keto diet. The chicken is dredged through almond flour before frying, which gives it a duller flavor than wheat flour.

With wheat flour, the same recipe would be excellent, if familiar. If youre on the keto diet, almond flour is definitely the way to go. Just be sure to use a lot of salt.

The last dish I made was a dessert called Black and White Keto Fat Bombs. Seriously, thats the name, and seriously, thats what they are. They are chocolate-and-vanilla candies that are made with coconut oil and almonds, plus low-carb, powdered sweetener, sugar-free vanilla extract and unsweetened cocoa powder.

How did they taste? Not bad, actually, or at least not too bad. But the texture was so oily and off-putting that most taste testers threw away their samples. One said it was like eating butter.

If youre on the keto diet and youre looking for an extra infusion of fat, then Id say to go ahead and make it. Otherwise, this is one to avoid.

My friend Robin swears by the keto diet and says she is passionate about it. Her health indicators are all great, and she says she has higher energy and alertness. And though the diet is restrictive, she likes what she can eat: cheese, olive oil, butter, nuts and dark chocolate.

The biggest thing she misses is fruit, but she does not miss the 40 pounds she lost.

Then again, I have another friend, Roger, who lost 65 pounds. He just eats more healthfully and mindfully, and walks every day. That sounds easier.

BLACK AND WHITE KETO FAT BOMBS

Yield: 15 servings

2 cups slivered almonds

1 cup coconut oil

1 to 2 tablespoons of your favorite low-carb powdered sweetener

1 teaspoon orange zest

2 teaspoons vanilla extract (sugar-free if on keto diet)

Small pinch salt

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Line a mini-muffin tin with mini liners.

Pulse and then process the almonds, oil, sweetener, vanilla, zest and salt until smooth except for small chunks of almond (like chunky peanut butter). Remove half to a small bowl and stir in the cocoa powder.

Fill half of one liner with the vanilla mixture and then quickly fill the other half with the chocolate mixture (it should remind you of a black-and-white cookie). Repeat with the remaining vanilla and chocolate mixtures. Tap the tin on the counter a few times.

Freeze until solid, about 30 minutes. You can remove the liners if youd like. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

KETO MEDITERRANEAN CHICKEN

Yield: 4 servings

1 tablespoon olive oil

8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs

Salt and pepper

3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

1 cup pitted kalamata olives

2 tablespoons capers

2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 cup whole-milk Greek yogurt

1/4 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped

2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped

1 teaspoon lemon zest

1 tablespoon lemon juice

Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Liberally sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper and cook half of the pieces, skin-side down, until the skin is deeply browned, 6 to 8 minutes. Flip and cook until the other side is deeply browned, 4 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate and repeat with remaining pieces of chicken.

Pour out all but 1 tablespoon of the fat (if on the keto diet, keep all the fat in the pot). Return pot to heat and add garlic; cook until golden brown, about 1 minute. Add the olives, capers, vinegar, oregano and 1/2 cup water; stir to combine and to scrape up any browned bits at the bottom of the pot. Return chicken pieces to pot and stir to mix.

Cover and cook at a simmer until chicken is done, about 30 minutes. Remove the chicken and boil the sauce to reduce it by half.

Meanwhile, mix the yogurt, parsley, mint, lemon zest and lemon juice, plus a large pinch of salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Taste and season with more salt and pepper, if needed.

Serve the chicken with its sauce, and the yogurt sauce on the side.

KETO EGG CUPS

Yield: 3 servings

1 tablespoon butter, see note

6 large, thin slices of prosciutto

1/3 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/4 cup grated Parmesan

1/4 cup packed baby spinach leaves, chopped

1/4 cup roasted red peppers, chopped

6 large eggs

1/4 cup heavy cream

Salt and pepper

Note: To make this recipe even more keto-friendly, instead of greasing the muffin tin with 1 tablespoon of butter, melt 2 tablespoons and brush the tin with it. It will pool in the bottom of each cup, but that is OK.

Position an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees.

Grease the cups of a muffin tin with the 1 tablespoon of butter (or brush with 2 tablespoons of melted butter). Line each cup with a slice of prosciutto, folding and overlapping so that the entire surface of the cup is covered and no metal is peeking through. Divide the mozzarella evenly among the cups. Repeat with the Parmesan, spinach and roasted red peppers.

Whisk the eggs and cream in a large measuring cup or small pitcher; add some salt and a few grinds of pepper. Pour the egg mixture in each cup, making sure not to overfill.

Bake until the eggs are set and wobble only slightly, 10 to 12 minutes (the eggs will continue to cook after they come out). Let cool 5 minutes, then use a thin knife or offset spatula, if necessary, to loosen the prosciutto from the edges of each cup. Transfer to a plate for serving.

Per serving: 321 calories; 22 g fat; 10 g saturated fat; 426 mg cholesterol; 28 g protein; 4g carbohydrate; 1 g sugar; 1 g fiber; 1,779 mg sodium; 272 mg calcium

CITRUS-MARINATED OLIVES

Yield: 4 to 6 servings

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

2 sprigs fresh thyme

1 garlic clove, thinly sliced

1 strip lemon zest, removed with a vegetable peeler

1 strip orange zest, removed with a vegetable peeler

Salt and pepper

1 cup Castelvetrano olives

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon orange juice

Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the red pepper flakes, thyme, garlic, lemon zest, orange zest, salt and pepper to taste and cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic is pale golden, about 2 minutes. Stir in olives and cook until just warm, 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice and orange juice. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Per serving (based on 4): 167 calories; 18 g fat; 3 g saturated fat; no cholesterol; 1 g protein; 4 g carbohydrate; 1 g sugar; 2 g fiber; 829 mg sodium; 39 mg calcium

Obese man mocked and ‘judged’ in McDonald’s loses half his body weight – Liverpool Echo

A man has shared how reconnecting with his childhood friend finally helped him lose 13 stone after years of feeling unhappy and judged for his weight.

Thomas Dreha, from Kirkby, tipped the scales at 30 stone and would see people "rolling their eyes" at him whenever he walked into McDonald's.

When he saw his former school pal, Kevin Poole, now a personal trainer, sharing his clients' body transformations on Facebook, the die-hard Liverpool fan decided to reach out.

Since reconnecting with his friend, the 29-year-old has managed to lose 13 stone - losing 10 stone in just 12 months.

Speaking to the ECHO, Thomas, from Kirkby, said: "I'd always wanted to lose weight and tried all sorts over the years but nothing stuck.

"I'd join the gym and go by myself for a few months, then stop, then start again, so it was a cycle.

"Then I saw one of my old school friends on Facebook who had since become a personal trainer.

"I hadn't seen or spoken to him since we left school but then I saw some of his client transformations so I got in touch.

"He was made up to help me, he jumped at the chance - I'd always been big, even as a child, and me and Kev had been friends since primary school right through seniors.

"He's been with me the whole way and has helped with my nutrition too - he's just won Liverpool's best personal trainer."

Before his successful weight loss, Thomas felt depressed about his size and judged by strangers on a daily basis.

He would be ignored in shops and felt shop assistants would purposely avoid him so describes his new weight as "bittersweet".

He said: "If I walked into a McDonald's, I always felt instantly judged - you could see people turning round and rolling their eyes at me which made me feel self conscious whereas now I could walk in and nobody would bat an eyelid.

"People would stare but they didn't know me, it was judgement for my size which is heartbreaking.

"You could see sales people and shop assistants look and then look away - I'd be ignored and nobody would come up to me to help, it was like they didn't want to whereas now they'll help me.

"I can actually go into a shop and pick something up off a rail now which is just an incredible feeling, it's a foreign concept to me - though I do spend a lot more money on clothes because of the ease of it.

"The mental pressure of being that size is gone.

"It's a bittersweet thing because I feel normal now but it's so disappointing at the same time because everyone should be treated the same."

Growing up, Thomas was bullied by school peers and turned to food for comfort.

With both his parents being deaf, he shared that he'd come home from school and raid the cupboards knowing they couldn't hear what he was doing.

In his twenties, Thomas turned to takeaways four or five times a week - though wouldn't eat much throughout the day, opting to gorge when he got home from work instead.

He said: "As a kid, I knew my parents couldn't hear what I was doing so I'd just go through the cupboards eating.

"I felt depressed at a young age because of my size but then I would comfort eat which was a terrible cycle.

"Not many people saw that side because I'd put on a smile and a brave front and be the happy jolly guy everyone got on with, but I felt depressed.

"If I wasn't getting a takeaway, I'd have a large tea instead but I'd go to the shop on my way home from work and get two of those 1 sharing bags of crisps, two bottles of fizzy drinks and two of those large 1 sharing chocolate bars.

"Then I'd go home and eat my tea then eat all that afterwards."

Thomas, who works as a nursery practitioner, has managed to get his weight down to 17 stone with regular exercise and a new diet arranged by Kevin.

Thomas said: "The first couple of months was really tough, but because I made the effort on the nutrition side too, I started seeing results fast.

"I was losing a stone a month for the first five months and seeing the results made me stick to it because I was excited.

"My first training session with Kevin, I couldn't even get through the warm up - had to go outside because I thought I was going to be sick whereas now I can do the warm up in six or seven minutes then do a full session.

"I never expected to lose this weight - especially in this time."

Friends and colleagues have been supportive of Thomas' lifestyle change - though the change has been so drastic some people haven't recognised him.

"If I hadn't seen someone for six months, they'd have to double, triple take to realise it was me.

"That was an incredible feeling when I spotted them realise it was me.

"My friends and family have been really impressed especially because I'd been talking about doing it for so many years whereas now they knew I meant it.

"I've changed everything about my diet - Kev had me doing a food diary at first so I could keep on track and now I don't need to do that anymore because I know what works for me.

"As soon as I touch carbs, I will balloon so I don't really eat them but I look at it as a change of life rather than a restrictive diet and I still have treats every now and then which has made it a lot easier.

"I've had support from Kev every day and even the owner of the gym Fitness for All, Jill Purdy, has supported me."

Thomas shared his parents' reaction has been one of pride.

He said: "My parents have been absolutely amazed, they're very complimentary towards me and they're really proud.

"My work colleagues have been supportive too, everyone around me has.

"A lot of the parents of the kids I look after have been supportive with me - quite a few of the parents in the summer would bring in protein bars for me instead of chocolate because they knew what I was doing and wanted to support me.

"My life has completely changed, I play football now and I go on runs.

"Everything used to be a real struggle and it's all the little things you take for granted, just getting ready for work or walking to the train station was a massive effort and I'd be out of breath constantly and hot all the time.

"When I started with Kevin, I was in 52" waist jeans whereas now I'm in 38" which has made life so much easier.

"I've gone not being able to run for 30 seconds to doing 5k runs."

Now, Thomas wants to use his newfound fitness to take part in charity fitness events like Tough Mudder and marathons in order to raise money for the homeless.

He said: "Now I'm at the point where I'm maintaining and I've booked a tummy tuck in April because I'm bored of dealing with excess skin and I can feel it all the time when I'm exercising.

"Once I'm healed, I want to use my experiences for something positive.

"I want to keep pushing myself and I'd like to do some fundraising events for homeless outreach."

I went from a size 24 to 12… and still eat cake! – Echo Live

WHEN talking to Caroline Buckley, I am reminded of an advert from the early 1980s. Remember Victor Kiam, extolling the virtues of the Remington shaver on our black and white televisions? Remember his catch phrase? I was so impressed, I bought the company?

Caroline Buckleys story is not one of investment in an electronics company, but rather a story of successful weight loss through Slimming World, so much so that she has now bought into the franchise to become a Slimming World Consultant.

Its also a story of investment in herself.

Caroline begins the story at the age of 12.

I was sick and I started to put on weight. It just escalated. I had very bad food habits from a very young age. Then, in my 20s I was going out drinking and eating and like a lot of girls I had convenience foods, takeaways and a lack of knowledge.

All those couple of pounds creep up and next thing you know you are overweight.

Fast forward to June, 2017, and Caroline finally found the motivation to do something about it.

As proprietor of Carolines Beauty Haven in Crosshaven, she was seeing women come in to her salon with great weight loss results and she felt inspired to follow their path.

In addition, she was in a new relationship with her partner John, who was to turn 50 that August, which provided an impetus for Caroline to set herself a modest target: If I could be down half a stone by then I was. And more. And Ive two kids, so another reason was to be doing it for them. Ive a girl of 16 and I want to show example; and Ive a son whos 11. I want to show them healthy eating and move away from convenience food.

Slimming World was the method she chose, although it wasnt the first time she had gone down that route.

I went before to Slimming World and Weight Watchers but I could never get past the first stone, she explains.

On reflection, she feels this was because she never gave group sessions adequate time back then, something she now describes as essential. She also suggests that its important to find the right consultant to lead you.

In 2017, things were different.

I bent over backwards to give myself an hour and a half every Saturday morning for group.

There she found support amongst others on their own weight loss journeys, as they shared ideas, recipes and secrets of success, as well as forming great friendships.

You learn from the person across the room. Things like being prepared for your week, getting tips such as making your curry sauce first, freezing it and adding your meat afterwards; asking questions like, where can I buy certain ingredients?

A simple pen and notebook also proved to be valuable tools for Caroline at the beginning.

We have food diaries where you document what you eat in the first few weeks. We say, If you nibble it, you scribble it. If you drink it, you ink it. If you bite it, write it.

Documenting your food over the first few weeks is very important. People can look at it and think, I did well today. You feel that you are the one in control.

At the weekly weigh-ins, Caroline was impressed by the fact that everyones weight remained confidential, with no humiliation or judgement. Theres no shame in a maintain or a gain. We all have good or bad weeks, she says.

She also feels that the system protects clients against any extreme or unhealthy weight loss expectations right at the beginning of the journey. She says on average people lose three to five stone, although there was one lady in her group who lost eight to nine stone in weight.

As a party lover, with a great social life, Caroline was delighted to find that the Slimming World method did not curb her lifestyle.

I can still eat what I want, just in controlled amounts. Ive had holidays, weekends away and parties. I didnt give up drink or my social life. Im always out and about. When youre out you can make the wiser choices by following the plan, like asking for sauces on the side. And the support in restaurants among staff is great. In places like Ramen and SOBA, you can ask if theyll cook it in water instead of oil.

Every Saturday morning I have chocolate cake. You can have treats you just work them into your plan. Nothing is out of bounds.

As a result, Caroline has come to love coking more than she did in the past.

Its more interesting. It was getting very same-y. And Im looking down and my tummy isnt in the way, its not touching off the hob or the steering wheel, she says, recalling the everyday difficulties of driving a car.

Any advice in particular?

Soup is your best friend. Tomato soup with chilli, butternut squash soup with curry powder; throwing in celery is brilliant, it sweetens it up, the kids love it.

Today, Caroline is 3 stone, 3lbs down, having gone from a size 24 at her heaviest to a size 12.

I have a few things in size 10, even if they do cling to me, she adds.

Caroline had a breast reduction 11 years ago which took her down ten sizes, at which point she took up running but she still didnt lose weight, even though she was toned and fit and ran two marathons. For her, it seems Slimming World was the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle.

Could she have ever dreamt of this transformation when she first plucked up the courage to tackle her weight? No, never. I never knew what it was like to feel slim. I cant believe I still am.

No matter her size, Caroline has always been someone who had an interest in fashion and beauty, but now that is a far easier pursuit.

The biggest difference is being able to buy clothes. When I started I was a size 22/24. At the age of 18 I was a size 16, so Im smaller now than I was as a teenager. With bigger size clothes your underwear is more expensive and I sometimes had to wear maternity-wear instead of regular clothes.

There were other difficulties too.

Being in a bar, trying to squeeze through people or on a train. I had welts under my breasts and tummy because the flesh wouldnt have any air. I dont get hot and sweaty out in places now. Even going in toilet doors was difficult. Now its just, In you go!

Previously married, she found shopping for wedding dresses a distressing experience 20 years ago.

There were none in my size. I remember a woman in a boutique saying, Wed never stock those sizes. I cried straight away and gave out to the woman.

Now happily engaged to John, she is looking forward to dress shopping this time around, ahead of Christmas 2021 nuptials.

I cannot wait! On Pinterest I have it all pinned. All styles are open to me now. I dont have to worry about a large chest or a large tummy. I can actually choose what I want.

Or I can walk out the door, saying, I didnt like anything there. I can go into shops now and not have to buy the only thing that fits.

One automatically thinks of clothes when talking about weight but perhaps the impact on footwear gets forgotten. Caroline enlightens me: Im well known for loving my shoes and now Im three stone lighter on my feet I can wear my heels all day and night. I never have any pain in my feet.

Sounds like Caroline will be dancing all night long at her wedding!

Caroline runs her Slimming World groups at Douglas Hall AFC in Moneygourney, Rochestown every Wednesday at 6.30pm, Thursday at 9.30am and Saturday at 9am. See http://www.facebook.com/SlimmingWorldRochestown

Weight loss tips: A fitness expert tells us how he lost 11 kg and got (extremely) ripped in 5 months – GQ India

While no one in the world can offer you a magic weight loss pill to shed those extra pounds and also get ripped, 35-year-old Master Trainer, Rehabilitations Expert, Celebrity Trainer, Team Physique Global Athlete, Faculty For ACE & ACSM Aakash N Mishras amazing body transformation can offer you an insight into what fitness experts do to lose weight and whip themselves in shape. Mishra tells us, being in the fitness industry, it is a given that I have to be in good shape to inspire my clients to work harder towards their fat loss goals."

"And, to get in this said good shape as per my body type, I had to shed 11 kg and get trimmed from 89 kg to 78 kg. Notably, I also wanted to do this in a short time frame. So, I made the below step-by-step weight loss plan and stuck to it to arrive at my goal," he adds.

1. I got my blood test done in regard with any vitamin deficiencies, and found out that my body has a tendency of storing high fats due to a particular vitamin deficiency. And I have to take care of it to avoid any unwarranted weight gain.

2. A lot of people dont realise this, but changing your body is very difficult and it needs a strong mindset and will power to sustain a strict diet or routine. For me, this strict diet was the calorie deficit diet.

3. Fitness is also very purpose driven. My purpose was to get back in the great shape I once used to be in. I started seeing old (and really fit) pictures of myself to remind myself daily that I can do this! You need this kind of focus in the first month of your transformation because after that your body will start listening to your mind. On that note, let me also tell you why many people are not able to lose weightthey dont prepare for the next day. If you want to change, you need to make things easy for yourself. Things like planning the next day in advanceit means having your schedule ready along with your periodised workout program, meal timings and actual meal requirements.

I have a rigid endomorph physique with dense muscle structure, wide hip and shoulder bones, average height, insulin resistance and a body type which holds more carbs (glycogen) and water. So, for my body type, I started weight training 5 days a week. It was a very intense workout plan with mostly two-day split(s) - shoulder and legs, chest and lats and arms - with lots of Supersets, Tri-Sets and Giant-Sets, which I dont recommend to anyone. You workout routine should be customised for your body and goals.

I used to have 3 to 4 meals including snacks in line with the calorie deficit diet I had created. These meals would comprise:

20 egg whites

400 gm of cooked white rice

200 gm beans

250 gm of veggies

An apple + papaya + pomegranates

2 scoops of whey protein

10 almonds and walnuts (as snacks)

1 or 2 tablespoon Oil before going to bed (Olive oil or Coconut oil)

Coffee (with or without milk)

Id also observe an intermittent fast once a week."

QUICK READ: What is intermittent fasting?

1. "Educate yourself! Sleep, vitamin deficiency, gut health, hormones, food allergies, smart weight training routines and many such aspects are some of the key elements for weight loss (fat loss) which you cannot ignore.

2. Hire a qualified fitness professional who knows how to use the above elements to your advantage rather than going with someone who is forcing you to buy some supplements which can be harmful to your body."

Usain Bolt thinks he has a better chance in the NFL than Tyreek Hill has in the Olympics – NBCSports.com

Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill said before the Super Bowl that hes seriously considering trying to make the U.S. Olympic team this year. The fastest man of all-time thinks thats ridiculous.

Bolt told NBCSports.com that Hill, who may be the fastest player in the NFL, wouldnt even be close to competitive with Olympians. Bolt said even the fastest athlete in another sport cant run at world-class speeds consistently enough to advance through the multiple qualification heats required to make the Olympics.

No, theres no chance, Bolt said. A lot of people think its about one-off runs, but its rounds that really show who you are and the amount of work you do. So I think no, he wouldnt make the team.

Bolt did say, however, that he would love to get a chance to play wide receiver in the NFL and would particularly love to catch passes from Aaron Rodgers.

I think my hands are good, he said, and I know Ive got the speed.

Its probably safe to say thats not going to happen, just as its safe to say Hill wont be an Olympian. But watching Bolt run a deep route on the football field would be a sight to see.
