Microgreens are a type of vegetable greens that are harvested right after the leaves of the veggie have developed. Considered a mix between sprouts and baby greens, microgreens are typically used as a garnish for different dishes (think soups, salads, and sandwiches). But there is more to these greens besides being a topping to your favorite dish.
In addition to their great taste, microgreens have an unusually high nutritional value. They are chock-full of all sorts of vitamins like C, E, and K, along with the phytonutrient carotenoid, which has been shown to support immune function.
A 2014 study conducted by the USDA looked at 25 varieties of microgreens, testing to see how their nutrients compared to that of typical vegetables. According to their report, "In general, microgreens contained considerably higher levels of vitamins and carotenoidsabout five times greaterthan their mature plant counterparts, an indication that microgreens may be worth the trouble of delivering them fresh during their short lives."
Along with adding a delicious garnish to any meal, microgreens can also be tossed in a juice or smoothie, used as a side to an entree, or even as a substitute to lettuce. They add flavor, color, and nutritional value in one quick touch. Check out these 12 recipes that incorporate the food into all sorts of meals.

Nicotine style ‘meat patch’ developed to help wean consumers off carnivore diet – FoodNavigator.com

A significant number of Britons are actively trying to reduce their meat intake.
According to research commissioned by plant-based food brand Strong Roots, almost half of Britons (47%) have tried to reduce their meat intake at some point, and over one-third (36%) feel guilty when they eat meat.
However, 69% of respondents said they love meat, and 33% reported they cannot make it through the day without eating meat.
When the British population does attempt to cut out meat products for good, temptation is regarded the biggest reason for falling off the wagon. Of the 2,000 adults surveyed, over one-quarter (27%) said they struggled to resist the lure of fast food, of appealing meat dishes when eating out of home, or the sight of family members eating meaty meals in the home.
And of the meat products consumers said they would most miss on a vegan or vegetarian diet, respondents listed bacon as the clear leader (20%), followed by beef steak (15%) and sausages (14%).
UK plant-based brand Strong Roots is hoping to help consumers wean themselves off meat, which a company spokesperson told FoodNavigator is perceived to be a significant challenge.
We conducted research which showed that many people struggle reducing their meat consumption. The figures showed that one in six (17.5%) of the adult population believe that giving up meat is a tougher challenge than giving up cigarettes (15.2%) or alcohol (15.1%).
The research also revealed that 30% believe there should be more support for those trying to cut out meat.
As a plant-based brand that wants to support those making plant-based choices, Strong Roots wants to raise awareness of this issue in an engaging way, we were told.
Strong Roots solution is a meat patch inspired by nicotine patches. Intended to be worn on the arm, the patches contain a bacon scent sourced from a supplier of commercial aromas which is activated by scratch and sniff technology.
The patch was inspired by insights from the University of Oxfords professor of experimental psychology, Charles Spence.
The professors research shows that our sense of smell is strongly connected to our ability to taste, and that there is evidence to suggest that experiencing food-related cues, such as smelling a bacon aroma, could lead us to imagine the act of eating that food, Strong Roots spokesperson told this publication.
We wanted to explore whether having the smell of bacon on a patch while eating might help consumers imagine eating meat, help them feel sated and manage their cravings.
For Professor Spence, the potential success of a smelly strategy is supported by several lines of evidence, including everything from work on sensory-specific satiety the idea that repeated exposure to the colour, taste, or smell of food can lead to satiation through to more recent work on embodied mental simulation.
According to the latter notion, experiencing food-related cues, such as, for example, smelling a bacon aroma, can lead us to imagine the act of eating that food. Imagine eating enough bacon and you really might find yourself sated, he noted.
However, in order to be really effective, my suspicion is that one may want to combine that highly-desirable food aroma with actually eating something.
Strong Roots has not conducted scientific trials, and therefore cannot prove the efficacy of the patches. However, the company has requested anecdotal feedback from consumers testing the patch samples in cities around the UK.

ON average, Brits fork out a whopping 211 per month on getting fit and losing weight.
That adds up to more than 2,500 for the whole year.
1
A new study revealed consumers splash out the most on health food, supplements, protein shakes and active wear.
However, getting into shape doesn't have to break the bank - according to top Coach and Personal Trainer at VitalityHealth Jonathan Kibble.
He said: "With a bit of creativity and determination you can turn your fitness goals into a reality without exhausting your wallet."
Here, Jonathan takes us through the best ways to shed pounds without spending them...
If your gym membership expired in 2019, don't worry about renewing it.
There are plenty of other ways you can get in shape without spending your hard-earned pennies on gym membership - you just need to make sure you're raising your heart rate.
Running is a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness
"Running is a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness, helping to strengthen bones and even reduce stress," Jonathan says.
"Add a bit of community spirit to your running routine, by joining a local parkrun.
"Its free to attend and at just 5km in distance, its accessible to all."
It's a myth that the only place you can get fit is shut away inside a stuffy gym.
Jonathan emphasises that you can just go into the garden or a local park and do some circuits training to blitz your body fat.
He says: "Outdoor gyms are now a thing - available to use for free in parks and recreational spaces across the UK. "Head to the outdoor gym to add strength training to your routine - and if you need a bit of encouragement, grab a friend or family member to work out with you.
"During those cold, dark winter months you could even tackle some bodyweight moves from your very own home!"
You can do something as simple as a brisk walk to boost your fitness.
In fact - you could burn 100 to 300 calories in just 30 minutes or 200 to 600 in an hour - depending on your weight.
"Walking is one of the easiest ways to get fit and stay in shape, with little to no cost involved," Jonathan says.
Average health and fitness spend in 2019 (full year)
"Get more out of the daily dog walk, by increasing the challenge.
"Try pumping your arms as you walk to get more of a workout or add a couple of hills into your usual walk to fatigue your muscles more."
In particular, Coronation Street star Katie McGlynn has credited walking 15,000 steps a day for helping her to drop two dress sizes.
From snapping selfies to helping you beat traffic - your phone can do a multitude of things - including helping you lose weight.
Jonathan has pointed out that there are hundreds of free and low-cost apps that can help motivate you to work out and track your calories.
There are plenty of free or low-cost apps offering ready-made workout plans
He says: "Looking for inspiration, consult the experts on the go.
"From former Olympians, to high profile health and fitness influencers, there are plenty of free or low-cost apps offering ready-made workout plans which are fun and easy to follow, helping you to stay active, even if you have a busy schedule."
Some fitness apps we can recommend include fitness influencer Grace Beverley's Shreddy app and the NHS' Couch to 5K running app.
You don't even have to leave the comfort of your own home to kickstart your fitness regime.
"Transform your home into a ready-made workout space with a few low-cost equipment buys," Jonathan says.

LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio Medical experts are weighing in on how restrictive dieting and drastic weight loss/gain can impact your body.
When the average person tries lose weight over a healthy, regulated period of time, the goal is to burn fat and build muscle, which then helps you slim down, which can't be done in 24 hours.
When someone who's already very active tries to lose weight over a short period of time through these extreme methods, they are only losing water weight. This causes their body to be dehydrated and can cause them to under-perform.
If you have to maintain a certain weight for a sport, doctors recommend the best way to do that is to treat your body the same during the off season.
"I think the safest thing is to stay close to your competing weight. Try and keep your off-season weight close to your in-season weight for your competing, just so you don't have to do drastic measures to lose weight in a short period of time," said Dr. Steve Wing, a Promedica Emergency Physician.
Cutting weight as an athlete can also lead to metabolism problems later in life.
"Weight cycling is linked to weight gain in the long run. Our metabolism tries to maintain a homeostasis and weight cycling is an attempt to change that homeostasis," said Amy Good, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
There are health risks with both cutting and gaining weight quickly, especially when an athlete is young.

If youre like a lot of Americans, youve been doing all the right things to get in shape in 2020. Hitting the gym regularly, eating salads for lunch, biking to work, cutting out carbs, skipping dessert. There are a million ways to lose weight and usually, a combination of them is the best way to create that calorie deficit, so youre burning more than you take in. But after all that hard work, the hardest part is yet to come: Keeping the weight off. Whats the best way to make sure you dont put all that weight back on? Try Noom.
Look, all the hard work in the world isnt going to make a difference if you go back to your old ways once you hit your target weight. Youve got to change your lifestyle, break bad habits, and re-train your mind to live like a fit, healthy person. Try Noom. It can help.
Noom is much more than a calorie-counting, weight-watching system. Yes, its that. But its so much more. When you try Noom, you join a community of tens of thousands of like-minded individuals who are going through the same things you are. Theyve been there and done that. And they can help you fight the urges, resist the cravings, and become the fit, trim person you want to be.
Our bodies are delicate machines. Especially as we get older, the bad things we do to our bodies are much harder to negate than they were in our youth. Our metabolism slows, so things like overeating and sitting at a desk all day have a much greater effect than they used to. Thats why its important to stay active, eat right, and exercise regularly as we age.
Our minds are just as delicate. We instinctively repeat the things we enjoy and avoid the things we dont. Its just human nature. Now, everyone loves to sit at a table of delicious comfort food and gorge until were stuffed! Or drink way too much beer on the weekends, watching sports or whatever. It feels great to indulge! For a while, anyway. Its why the experts call it binging. Its fun while it lasts but ultimately takes its toll.
Binging is a fall-back mechanism we tend to repeat, and repetition begets habits. Habits become behavior, and next thing you know were drinking too much every weekend, or going to the same Mexican restaurant and filling up on rice and beans and enchiladas until were stuffed. Its fun, Its tasty. Its easy. And its incredibly unhealthy.
Try Noom. It can help you reprogram your behavior and unlearn those bad habits. Thanks to the support of your personal coach and of the community of Noom users, the dietary and fitness guidelines noom lays out are easy to follow. And easier to repeat. Soon, those smart decisions, those good behaviors, turn into good habits. And you become that healthy, fit person you picture yourself being.
So dont waste your hard work getting into shape for the new year by backsliding into bad habits and poor decisions. Try Noom today, and re-train your mind so you can begin living the life you want to live and keep off the weight youve worked so hard to lose.

Weight loss: Food to eat, and avoid when trying to lose weight after a Caesarean Section delivery – Times Now

Weight loss: Food to eat, and avoid when trying to lose weight after a Caesarean section delivery  |  Photo Credit: Getty Images
New Delhi: A woman's body goes through various changes at the time of pregnancy when she is carrying the child, at the time of delivery of the baby, as well as after the baby is delivered. One of the most common problems they face is that of weight gain. Women gain multiple kgs of weight when they are pregnant with their child, especially because their focus at that time is not a weight-loss-friendly diet, but a healthy, nutritious diet which will ensure health for the baby.
Caesarean delivery, or C-section delivery, is becoming a common method of delivering babies. This is when surgery is used to deliver the baby. It is mostly opted for when a vaginal delivery would put the baby and the mother's life and health at risk. Losing weight after a caesarean delivery is not very different from losing weight after a normal delivery.
The first stepto losing weight after a C-section delivery is to consult your doctor about the same. Since it involves a surgical procedure, the doctor can tell you the best time that you should rest for your body to heal, and when you can hit the gym again, or start a diet. You must also remember that breastfeeding is important not just for your baby's health, but can also help you lose weight. Women who breastfeed lose weight faster than women who do not.
Like always, diet plays a very important role in helping you lose weight, even if it is after a C-section delivery.
Initially, your focus should not start a diet that helps you lose weight, but instead, you should just try to eat healthier. Cut off junk food from your diet and choose healthier foods, like whole foods. Whole foods are mostly low in calories, which means you can eat them in large volumes, while still losing weight. Here is a list of foods to eat, followed by foods to avoid, when you are trying to lose weight after a C-section delivery.
Fruits and vegetables
Fruits are naturally sweet, which ensures that your sugar cravings are satisfied. You can have a few slices of sweet fruits for dessert when you feel the urge to eat something sweet, and avoid foods with added sugar. Fruits can also serve as a good mid-day snack. Fruits and vegetables are also rich in nutrients and fibre which help to fill you up and help you curb appetite, which will help you lose weight.
Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds are very nutritious and can help in healing the body after the surgery. They are also rich in fibre, which makes them weight loss appropriate. Nuts and seeds can be added to salads, fruit bowls, etc to make them richer in fibre, and more filling. Nuts and seeds can also serve as healthy, weight-loss appropriate snacks.
Whole grains
Whole grains are very rich in fibre and various nutrients. Whole grains are also a plant-based source of protein. These properties make whole grains very healthy, and weight-loss appropriate. The protein in whole grains can help build your muscles and improve the pace of healing. The fibre and protein together can fill you up, and reduce your appetite, which can help you lose weight.
Junk food
Junk food like fried foods, foods made with refined sugar, flour, unhealthy oils, etc should be avoided, when you are trying to lose weight after a C-section delivery. Not only is junk food fattening, but it also contains a lot of empty calories. Empty calories are calories which do not bring with them any kind of nutrition.
Processed foods
Processed foods like chips, baked goods, biscuits, etc should be avoided when you are trying to lose weight. Consumption of processed foods has been linked with weight gain, as well as a higher risk of other diseases. Binging on processed foods is very easy, and one should consciously try to avoid them when trying to lose weight.

FTC reaches settlement with anti-aging pill seller – Kdminer

If there is one thing the Federal Trade Commission wants you to remember about this article, it's this: sellers that peddle cures must have scientific proof to back up their claims. The FTC takes action when they dont.
Case in point: The FTC alleges that Quantum Wellness Botanical Institute, LLC, its CEO, Fred Auzene, and former marketer, Maria Gutierrez Veloso, deceptively advertised a product they called "ReJuvenation" as an anti-aging wonder pill.
Their ads promised that ReJuvenation would reverse the aging process, repair damage to the body, and treat diseases by stimulating the production of human growth hormone (HGH) and stem cells.
The defendants boldly claimed that ReJuvenation could reverse or repair heart attack damage, heart disease, blindness, brain damage from stroke, Alzheimers disease, Parkinsons disease, deafness, Crohns disease, and age-related damage to the bodys organs, tissues, and joints.
According to the FTC, the defendants worked hard to convince people to buy ReJuvenation, which cost between $39.95 and $49.95, plus shipping and handling, for a one-month supply.
In a proposed settlement announced this week, the FTC says these claims were false or misleading, and the sellers had no reliable scientific evidence to back them up.
The proposed federal court orders would require the defendants to have human clinical testing to support future claims related to the treatment of any disease or health condition. The judgments total $3.4 million, which represents what people paid for ReJuvenation. After the defendants turn over $660,000, that money will be returned to ReJuvenation customers. The remainder of the judgment will be suspended due to inability to pay.
The FTC advises consumers to be skeptical about ads promising miraculous results, or cures for lots of medical issues. Before you buy or take such a product, talk to a healthcare provider to make sure its right for you.
Check out ftc.gov/dietarysupplement for more information, and report any suspicious claims to the FTC at ftccomplaintassistant.gov.

Jarrell Miller has to win the old fashioned way in Top Rank comeback – Bad Left Hook
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/comicon.gif)
Some boxing fans care, many more dont. And, frankly, sometimes its hard to tell what many of the big league players in the boxing business the deal-makers, and, indeed, the fighters think about the presence of PEDs in the sport.
The issue popped up in my head, as I pondered the return to the ring of Jarrell Big Baby Miller, the charismatic and now controversial heavyweight who saw his lottery ticket title shot against Anthony Joshua go down the toilet when samples showed the presence of three different banned chemicals in his system.
GW1516, EPO and HGH were in his body, and, he explained, a tainted supplement and then a rogue cocktail injected into a hurting elbow were responsible for the red-flagging, which resulted in Miller being bounced from the June 1, 2019 clash with the Brit champ AJ.
Miller admitted to, no surprise, getting a bit depressed after that $9 million purse circled the drain, but decided to soldier on. Today, his prospects are looking up, being that hes now under the Top Rank promotional umbrella. Miller is co-promoted by Salita Promotions and Greg Cohen Promotions, and seems to be gearing up to use the notoriety from the PED positive as a PR propellant. Did you see the quote in the release Top Rank sent out hyping his addition to their mix?
Minor setback for a major comeback. Im coming for everything and everyone. No one is safe. Say hello to the bad guy, Miller said. Everyone wants to portray the superhero. We dont live in a sunshine world. Ill never be the superhero. In my world, the majority of the time, the villain wins.
Yikes. Happily, we saw a concession to family values as in the release, TR bossman Bob Arum said, Jarrell Miller is serious about coming back, doing things the right way and becoming heavyweight champion of the world. He is one of boxings most unique and exciting characters, but most importantly, he can fight.
Doing things the right way means by not using exotic solutions to bolster strength and stamina, for the record. (I think.)
To that end, I was pondering how commissions in places like Nevada or New York might handle the case of Miller, when he applies to be licensed to fight. He will be grilled, presumably, asked for particulars on the circumstances of the PED positives before the AJ date. He can expect to be faced with stiff scrutiny regarding his bodily fluids, wed think.
Now, if he were to fight next in New York, hed be smart to check their list of banned substances, and make sure he isnt within a country mile of ingesting any those. I looked at the NY list of no-no substances, and was surprised when I didnt see EPO, GW1516 or HGH on the banned list.
So I checked in with NYSAC and asked for clarification. HGH, for instance, could be used righteously, under pertinent medical circumstances; is that why it isnt on the banned in NY list, or does NYSAC adhere to a list of substances banned by an oversight organization, like WADA, in addition to the substances on their own verboten list?
A NYSAC spokesperson furnished a response statement:
The NY State Athletic Commission uses a set of regulations to combat PED use and the use of other illicit substances in combative sports. As you noted, 19 NYCRR 208.29, Prohibited substances and the authority of Commission to require drug testing of licensed athletes authorizes the Commission to take aggressive action against any athlete found to have a listed prohibited substance or PED in their system.
Beyond those prohibited substances and PEDs specifically listed by the Commission on its website and within its Medical Manual, the Commission may discipline an athlete for the use of any drug or substance (whether listed or unlisted) that is found to have been used in a manner that is contrary to the athletes obligation under NY rules to engage in honest competition.
To that end, if an athlete were to use an unlisted substance that may result in unwarranted and unfair artificial enhancement or an unlevel playing field, the Commission may discipline the athlete for a violation of 19 NYCRR 208.17, Honest Competition. In addition, where an NYSAC licensed athlete agrees to a third-party administered drug testing program and tests positive for a PED or other inappropriate substance in violation of their agreement, the Commission may take disciplinary action pursuant to the honest competition rule, its prohibited substances rule, and rule 19 NYCRR 209.3, Compliance with Contracts.
Working in tandem, the rules of the Commission provide various tools to pursue discipline in the event an athlete attempts to gain an unfair and improper advantage through the use of drugs.
Seems to make sense, for the commission to have some room to work within. After all, busy chemists find new compounds and combos to boost performance and I think listing every single one and keeping up with making sure it lists every skull and cross-bones solution would be next to impossible.
I messaged Millers new manager, James Prince, to ask for his take on Millers return, and that would include his stance on PED usage in the fight game, and how he thinks the sports power brokers should handle the issue. If I hear back I will insert his response. Note: I spoke to someone whod know, who told me they believe Prince will be the sort who helps give Miller more structure, points him in the direction of doing the right thing, not doing things that could have his career backtrack again.
Ideally, Miller will sign on with 24/7/365 random testing by VADA, sending a clear message that hes intending to never again get disciplined for having banned chemical aids in his system; because Arum is right, his personality is such that he could attract intterest from even non-boxing fans, if hes able to compete and beat one of these higher profile belt holders. But to do that, he must do it that old fashioned way.

Male birth control pills are around the corner. Heres how they work – ZME Science
![](https://www.dgw.tv/wp-content/themes/elegant-brit-b/images/caticon.gif)

Credit: Marco Verch, Flickr. Why we need a male contraceptive pill
The introduction of modern contraceptive methods has been revolutionary, not only in terms of sexual freedom but also due to its impact on the very fabric of society. Suddenly, with condoms and the pill readily available, procreation was no longer the primary focus of intercourse.
However, despite tremendous progress, there is still much to do. In the United States, approximately 40% of pregnancies are unplanned.
A wanted child is a happy child. A happy and secure child more often than not grows into a well functioning and adjusted adult. This is why its so important that pregnancy is a choice, for both parents and childrens sake.
In order for this to happen, the burden of responsibility for pregnancy prevention needs to shift from women to family planning. This entails men playing a major role.
The problem is that, historically-speaking, contraception options for men are not very effective or optimal.
The most secure pregnancy prevention method for men is abstinence, something thats so unfeasible most of you reading this article might simply laugh it off (as you should). Even so, there are many organizations in the United States that go to great lengths to preach abstinence until marriage, especially in schools where it sometimes replaces evidence-based sex education.
Condoms are actually great for both preventing unwanted pregnancies and STDs. When used perfectly, they are 98% effective at preventing pregnancies. But since people arent perfect, condoms are about 85% effective. Some couples find them very annoying so they just use unreliable and risky methods like the calendar method or the withdrawal method.
In contrast, vasectomies (basically male sterilization) are almost 100% effective at preventing pregnancy. However, it has the potential to remain permanent and many men are scared of having this kind of surgery.
More than 60 years since the oral contraceptive pill was first introduced for women, it is now time to make the leap and offer a similar option for men, too.
Researchers have experimented with a number of options in the past two decades but an effective oral contraceptive for men has always been difficult to produce due to the rapid metabolization rates of androgynous hormones by the male body. However, scientists are making progress.
At the moment, various research groups are working in parallel to find the male birth control pill that is the most effective and with the fewest side effects. Here are some of the most promising hormonal-based male contraceptives.
Dimethandrolone undecanoate (DMAU) is a pill that is taken daily and affects male fertility by suppressing two types of male hormones follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). This hormonal inhibition decreases the production of testosterone and sperm count without causing symptoms of low testosterone.
In a 2018 study, 82 healthy men aged 15 to 50 received either a daily pill of DMAU in one of three doses for 28 days or a placebo. The study found that those who took the highest dosage (400 mg) had the lowest levels of testosterone, FSH, and LH.
Dimethandrolone is a modified form of testosterone, which has been chemically modified to get rid of the problem of liver toxicity, explained Stephanie Page, a researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle, and the studys lead author.
A long fatty acid chain has been added to another portion of the molecule to increase its absorption in the bloodstream, so we can get around the twice-a-day dosing. Dimethandrolone is different than testosterone in that it binds to both the progesterone receptor and the androgen receptor so we dont need two different steroids in order to have an effective male contraceptive, she added.
This study didnt measure the effectiveness of DMAU as a birth control method due to many ethical constraints. Just imagine a doctor telling you using this pill might or might not result in pregnancy lets just try it and see.
Instead, the studys main objective was that of assessing safety and tolerability. According to the results, there were no clinically significant changes developed in safety laboratory parameters, which supports further testing of DMAU in subsequent studies.
Longer trials are necessary because the body needs up to 90 days to produce sperm.
The DMAU trial reported side effects such as:
The men experienced no hot flashes and no mood changes, and no problems with sexual function compared with the placebo group, Paige said. There was no evidence of liver toxicity. We did see mild weight gain and an increase in cholesterol levels and that may require us to fine tune the dosing, but overall we are very encouraged about the safety profile of dimethandrolone.
Despite these incredibly low levels of testosterone, the men did not have symptoms of low testosterone. Because dimethandrolone is a modified form of testosterone, when we give the right dose of dimethandrolone, all those important secondary sexual characteristics in the man will be maintained in the body, she added.
Its a fairly established fact that the pill for women increases the risk of depression and forming blood clots. Long-term studies following male users over the years will be able to establish if there may be any similar effects.
If DMAU works like the pill developed for women, men will be able to stop taking it and resume sperm production when they feel ready to become fathers.
Ultimately, DMAU could be packed as an injectable version administered monthly so patients wont have to remember to take a daily pill.
More serious side effects were reported by a 2016 study conducted by researchers affiliated with the World Health Organization in Geneva. Their birth control vaccine was administered to 270 monogamous men, aged 18 to 45, and was found to be 97% effective. However, the study had to be cut short due to significant side effects like acne and serious mood disorders. However, its worth noting that 75% of the men who enrolled in the trial said theyd be willing to use this contraceptive measure again.
A 2019 study performed by scientists at the Los Angeles Biomed Research Institute (LA BioMed) in Torrance, California, experimented with a male oral contraceptive called 11-beta-methyl-19-nortestosterone dodecylcarbonate or 11-beta-MNTDC for short which is a sister compound of DMAU. The study involved 40 healthy men, out of whom 10 received a placebo, 14 received a dose of 200 milligrams (mg), and 16 got a double dose of 400 mg. The pill was taken daily with food.
Like DMAU, 11-beta-MNTDC works by reducing circulating testosterone levels as well as two other hormones required for sperm production. Both doses of the pill were successful in reducing these hormones compared to the placebo, and the effects were reversible after the treatment was stopped, normal levels were observed once again.
Compared to other male birth control pills, the side effects were pretty mild. Five men reported slightly decreased sex drive, and two men described mild erectile dysfunction. Overall, the participants maintained a healthy libido.
Other groups taken alternate routes. Instead of trying to suppress sperm production, researchers at Monash University in Australia have focused on halting sperm ejaculation altogether.
Sperm is produced inside the testicles and then stored in a coiled tube called the epididymis. During ejaculation, smooth muscles contract and propel the sperm out the epididymis through a tube called the vas deferens, then into the urethra from which it is finally expelled. Muscle contraction is signaled by certain hormones which attach themselves to two receptors: 1A-adrenoceptors and P2X1-purinoceptors.
A 2013 study on mice by the researchers at Monash found that genetic modifications blocking these two receptors prevented male mice from inseminating females. Because the vas deferens is located outside the blood-testicle barrier, this also means drugs that target these receptors could be administered orally.
While most groups are trying to find an oral contraceptive or vaccine, researchers at the University of Edinburgh have developed a hormone gel. A male user simply has to rub a bit of gel on the shoulder and pectoral area, leave it to dry for three to four seconds, then get dressed and go about his day.
The gel is a mixture of progesterone and testosterone. The progesterone switches off sperm production in the testes. Testosterone is added to compensate for the decrease caused by progesterone. Usually, artificial testosterone is rapidly metabolized by the body. By delivering testosterone in a gel form, the blood levels of the hormone will be adequate for a longer time, thanks to the slowtransdermalabsorption.
At the moment, the gel is being trialed by more than 450 couples around the world with preliminary results expected to appear by the end of 2020. Dr. John Reynolds-Wright, who is leading the study, hopes the gel will match the pills effectiveness rate of 97 to 99%.
According to Christina Wang from the Los Angeles Biomed Research Institute, a safe, reversible hormonal male contraception should be available in about 10 years. She goes on to add that 55% of men in stable relationships would at least try this type of contraceptive. That being said, you cannot buy male birth control pills and anyone claiming to sell them online is a scam.
Just like the female version, a male birth control pill will not protect users from STDs. This is why it is still important to use condoms in order to prevent sexually transmitted infections.
