The grimy and exhausted foot soldier, a cigarette dangling from the lips, is a complicated and irresistible force in movies and in life.
Prediction: War movies will outlast every other Hollywood genre, because we keep having wars. They provide abject lessons in cruelty and courage. Often, there are heavy doses of moral ambiguity, which Hollywood likes almost as much as sex. (Come to think of it, when was the last time you saw a truly sexy movie?)
Point is, war movies frighten and inspire us. Most of them are anti-war movies in that they powerfully remind us of the horrors of combat.
Where does this years Oscar front-runner, 1917, rank with the best of them? Certainly, Id put it in my top 10, based on its novel camerawork and overall impact. It has that ultimate trait all the great ones do, in that you cant get it out of your head, even days later.
Our ranking criteria: WWI and beyond, with a battlefield component. Like all masterpieces, our movies have a look all their own. And, obviously, amazing lasting power.
I dont want to start a war, but Id put Apocalypse Now at No. 1. And look at how low I ranked Saving Private Ryan. Im expecting flak on that one.
1. Apocalypse Now (1979). The raw guitar licks, the smell of napalm in the morning. This legendary film is where mayhem meets moral ambiguity. How can combat, the most immoral of all acts, have any ethics whatsoever? How far can emotional detachment go before evil intrudes? Stuff like that. The hippest, most distinctive and influential masterpiece.
Capt. Willard (Martin Sheen) warily surveys a temple compound in Apocalypse Now.
(United Artist)
2. The Longest Day (1962). A near-biblical look at the sweaty brawls of combat, during one of the most pivotal days in world history. Is this the most amazing and bullheaded male cast ever: John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda, Richard Burton? No wonder it required multiple directors.
3. The Dirty Dozen (1967). The audacious premise: Even a bunch of notorious psychos can have a good moment. More than a cheer-along attack on a Nazi officers retreat, The Dirty Dozen is a study in leadership, muddy testosterone and redemption. It also boasts the best ending in movie history, edging out Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz.
4. The Deer Hunter (1978). I could watch this troubling movie a million times, if only to admire the way Meryl Streep turns demurely away from a lens at points when every other actor would turn toward it. What elevates this, besides another astounding cast, is the overlap between home life and combat. It also raises the question: Wasnt De Niro, at 35, better when he didnt worry so much about being De Niro?
The Deer Hunter starring, from left, Christopher Walken, John Cazale and Robert De Niro.
(Universal Studios)
5. Downfall ( 2004 ). Playing Adolf Hitler in his final hours, Bruno Ganz gives one of the most memorable performances in film history. Taut, gory and tragic, Downfall explores Hitlers human side and the hold he had over his followers, which makes him even more of a cautionary monster. A bold and brilliant film, start to finish.
6. 1917 (2019). At first a buddy film, it quickly becomes a study in the deepest reserves of battlefield bravery. Shot compellingly through foxholes and across rivers in what appears to be one extended take. You cant get the question out of your head: Why do directors bother so much with multiple angles when the one perfect shot is all you ever need?
7. Das Boot (1981). Tingles on the back of the neck; the heart beats faster with every passing minute of this German U-boat saga. As with most of these war movies, the tension and anticipation seem to close in on the audience. Das Boot does what every gripping war movie does: It makes you say, Get me the hell out of here.
8. Hacksaw Ridge (2016). This highly underrated look at pacifism and courage under fire boasts perhaps the most horrid war scenes ever. But what a story. And what a performance by Andrew Garfield. How did this great film not win a single major Academy Award? #oscarssolame
9. Saving Private Ryan (1998). Overrated, though certainly one of the 10 best. It seems to lose its mojo after the first 20 minutes. But what a 20 minutes they are.
10. MASH (1970). This playful and cocky attack against toxic authority, and unjust wars, is nothing but fun. Should war movies ever be fun? In the right hands, yes. Because satire is still the sharpest sword.
Honorable mentions: The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Patton (1970), The Great Escape (1963), The Thin Red Line (1998), Full Metal Jacket (1987), Platoon (1986), Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Stalag 17 (1953), Black Hawk Down (2001), Stalingrad (1993), Paths of Glory (1957), All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Kellys Heroes (1970), Battleground (1949).

Mobile apps might help some obese or overweight people with type 2 diabetes shed excess pounds (lbs), but a recent review also suggests that results may be modest at best.
For thepaper, published in January 2020 in Obesity, researchers looked at changes in waist circumference, weight, and body mass index (BMI) in 2,129 people with type 2 diabetes who participated in one of 14 different clinical trials testing a variety of mobile apps for diabetes self-management. These trials randomly assigned some participants to use apps, while others did not, and interventions lasted between 3 and 12 months.
By the end of the trials, people who used diabetes apps lost an average of 0.84 kilograms (about 1.9 lbs) more than participants who didnt. With mobile apps, people also reduced their waist circumference by 1.35 centimeters (about inch) more on average.
BMI appeared lower with apps than without these tools, but the difference was too small to rule out the possibility that it was due to chance.
Reductions in weight, waist circumference, and BMI appeared more pronounced when people were obese and when participants used apps in combination with other interventions designed to promote healthy eating and exercise habits. Some of the trials in the analysis allowed participants to pursue other approaches to weight loss with or without also using a mobile app to manage diabetes.
Mobile application interventions combined with other behavior components lead to a larger magnitude of weight loss, says senior study author Mingzi Li, PhD, of Peking University in Beijing. However, the mobile application functionalities do not moderate weight loss significantly.
Face-to-face or supervised lifestyle modification programs have long been considered a cornerstone of diabetes care, Dr. Li and colleagues wrote. Obesity is a risk factor for developing diabetes and for experiencing potentially serious complications, like blindness, amputations, kidney failure, heart attacks, and strokes.
People who lose at least 5 percent of their body weight in the first year after a diabetes diagnosis may cut their 10-year risk of events like heart attacks and strokes roughly in half, according to a study published in May 2019 in Diabetologia.
And people who lose less weight may still see benefits. Patients with diabetes who lost no more than 2.5 percent of their body weight, for example, were able to lower their blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure, according to a review and meta-analysis published in June 2016 in Obesity Reviews.
RELATED: The Best Apps for Managing Diabetes
In the current study, people typically lost less than 2.5 percent of their body weight. This doesnt seem like much, but it might be enough for them to see improvements in blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure, Li and colleagues wrote.
Weight loss didnt appear to be influenced by whether apps had certain features, like tracking physical activity, logging food, counting calories, monitoring weight, or monitoring or recording blood sugar levels.
This might be because all studied mobile apps had four to five functionalities on average, and it is therefore difficult to distinguish between individual effects, Li said.
At the start of the trials, participants were 58 years old on average and had an average BMI of 30, meaning they typically had obesity.
People who started out with a higher BMI appeared to benefit more from using apps. For each additional unit in BMI as measured at the start of the trials, people using apps achieved of 0.15 kilograms (about 0.3 lbs) more weight loss on average.
RELATED: Most Type 2 Diabetes Apps Fall Short in Helping Users Manage Blood Sugar
Even though the current study pooled results from randomized controlled clinical trials considered the gold standard for medical research there are still some limitations.
One big drawback is that the studies didnt provide long-term weight loss outcomes, particularly because so many people who lose weight struggle to keep it off.
Another limitation is that the results dont show what types of apps or features within apps might help the most with weight loss.
More research is needed to determine whether apps might help people who dont have time or money to do face-to-face appointments with psychologists, nutritionists, or other clinicians who might help them develop and stick to a weight loss plan, Li and colleagues pointed out.
Its possible, they argue, that apps might help some busy people stick with weight loss efforts because its easier and more convenient to use a smartphone every day to monitor progress than it is to go to checkups.
People with diabetes who try and fail to lose substantial amounts of weight using only an app shouldnt be discouraged that they dont get results, says Susan Roberts, PhD, a professor of nutrition at Tufts University in Boston and founder of iDiet.
Dont feel guilty if an app isnt helping you, Dr. Roberts says. They dont help the average person much based on these results, and there are other ways to lose weight.
Whether or not people use apps, regular monitoring of progress with lifestyle changes and weight loss efforts is one key to success, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Besides mobile app interventions, there has been a growing evidence that interventions like step counters could be effective in weight loss as well, Li said. If combined with additional behavior change components, including multidisciplinary diabetes care management or health coaching, they will be more effective.

The keto diet: Its highs and lows plus 5 recipes – West Hawaii Today

My friends Mike and Robin have been on the keto diet for a couple of years. They lost a ton of weight, and they look fit and trim better than Ive ever seen them, and Ive known them more than 30 years.
Their results are not unusual. The keto diet often leads to rapid weight loss.
The trick lies in keeping it off. Mike and Robin have done it well, but a lot of people cant. And therein lies a problem, according to Jennifer McDaniel, a registered dietitian and the owner of McDaniel Nutrition Therapy in St. Louis.
While you might gain benefits in the short term just like any other restrictive diet, most people like, 90% of the people have trouble staying on it. When they lose the weight and they cant maintain the weight that they attained, thats just another failed diet, she said.
The keto diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrates diet its like the Atkins diet on steroids, McDaniel said. People on the diet strive to consume 70% to 80% of their calories through fats, as little as 5% through carbohydrates and the rest through protein.
This helps us lose weight because it forces our bodies to burn fat for energy instead of its preferred fuel, carbohydrates.
McDaniel recommends that her clients not go on the keto diet. The diet changes the microbiome in their bodies (the bacteria, fungi and more that live inside us). It is difficult for people on the diet to consume enough fiber, which can lead to constipation and other gastrointestinal nastiness. And because carbohydrates hold onto water, people on the diet are often dehydrated, she said.
And yet, as Mike and Robin and thousands of others can attest, it works. So I decided to try a few recipes to see how they tasted.
The rules of the keto diet are highly restrictive, which can make cooking difficult. You need to avoid fruit, sugars, grains, beans and legumes, rice, potatoes, candy and juice.
Ingredients to be encouraged include meat, fatty fish, eggs, butter and cream, cheese, nuts and seeds, certain oils (olive, avocado, coconut) and low-carb vegetables most green vegetables, tomatoes, onions, peppers and the like.
Its a lot to take in, so I began with a simple and entirely wonderful dish of Citrus-Marinated Olives. These are a marvelous treat, combining the heady earthiness of olives with bright notes of orange and lemon. Though the flavors are disparate, they work surprisingly well together.
Another winner was Keto Egg Cups, a dish that concisely presents everything that is good about keto cooking: Little cups made from prosciutto hold eggs mixed with cream, spinach, roasted red peppers and mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
Two entrees came next. First, I took a recipe for Instant-Pot Keto Mediterranean Chicken and made it a recipe for Keto Mediterranean Chicken Without an Instant Pot. It only took about five minutes longer than the Instant-Pot version, and it was deeply satisfying.
The other entree, Keto Breaded Chicken Cutlets, isnt bad but Id only make it again if I were on the keto diet. The chicken is dredged through almond flour before frying, which gives it a duller flavor than wheat flour.
Keto Mediterranean Chicken
Adapted from a recipe by the Food Network; yield: 4 servings
1 tablespoon olive oil
8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
Salt and pepper
3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
1 cup pitted kalamata olives
2 tablespoons capers
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 cup whole-milk Greek yogurt
1/4 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves, roughly chopped
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Liberally sprinkle chicken with salt and pepper and cook half of the pieces, skin-side down, until the skin is deeply browned, 6 to 8 minutes. Flip and cook until the other side is deeply browned, 4 to 6 minutes. Transfer to a plate and repeat with remaining pieces of chicken.
Pour out all but 1 tablespoon of the fat (if on the keto diet, keep all the fat in the pot). Return pot to heat and add garlic; cook until golden brown, about 1 minute. Add the olives, capers, vinegar, oregano and 1/2 cup water; stir to combine and to scrape up any browned bits at the bottom of the pot. Return chicken pieces to pot and stir to mix.
Cover and cook at a simmer until chicken is done, about 30 minutes. Remove the chicken and boil the sauce to reduce it by half.
Meanwhile, mix the yogurt, parsley, mint, lemon zest and lemon juice, plus a large pinch of salt and pepper. Stir to combine. Taste and season with more salt and pepper, if needed.
Serve the chicken with its sauce, and the yogurt sauce on the side.
Keto Egg Cups
Recipe from the Food Network; yield: 3 servings
1 tablespoon butter, see note
6 large, thin slices of prosciutto
1/3 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
1/4 cup packed baby spinach leaves, chopped
1/4 cup roasted red peppers, chopped
6 large eggs
1/4 cup heavy cream
Salt and pepper
Note: To make this recipe even more keto-friendly, instead of greasing the muffin tin with 1 tablespoon of butter, melt 2 tablespoons and brush the tin with it. It will pool in the bottom of each cup, but that is OK.
Position an oven rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 400 degrees.
Grease the cups of a muffin tin with the 1 tablespoon of butter (or brush with 2 tablespoons of melted butter). Line each cup with a slice of prosciutto, folding and overlapping so that the entire surface of the cup is covered and no metal is peeking through. Divide the mozzarella evenly among the cups. Repeat with the Parmesan, spinach and roasted red peppers.
Whisk the eggs and cream in a large measuring cup or small pitcher; add some salt and a few grinds of pepper. Pour the egg mixture in each cup, making sure not to overfill.
Bake until the eggs are set and wobble only slightly, 10 to 12 minutes (the eggs will continue to cook after they come out). Let cool 5 minutes, then use a thin knife or offset spatula, if necessary, to loosen the prosciutto from the edges of each cup. Transfer to a plate for serving.
Citrus-Marinated Olives
Recipe by Valerie Bertinelli via Food Network; yield: 4 to 6 servings
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
2 sprigs fresh thyme
1 garlic clove, thinly sliced
1 strip lemon zest, removed with a vegetable peeler
1 strip orange zest, removed with a vegetable peeler
Salt and pepper
1 cup Castelvetrano olives
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon orange juice
Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the red pepper flakes, thyme, garlic, lemon zest, orange zest, salt and pepper to taste and cook, stirring occasionally, until garlic is pale golden, about 2 minutes. Stir in olives and cook until just warm, 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice and orange juice. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Keto Breaded Chicken Cutlets
Recipe from the Food Network; yield: 4 servings
1 1/2 pounds thinly sliced raw chicken breast
Salt
2 cups almond flour
3 large eggs
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 1/2 teaspoons paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Ghee (clarified butter, see note) or avocado oil, for frying
Lemon wedges, for serving
Note: To clarify butter, gently melt butter over medium-low heat. Carefully skim foam off top. Pour carefully into a container, stopping before any of the white solids on the bottom of the pan pour out. Store in an airtight container for up to 9 months or in a refrigerator for up to 1 year.
If any of the chicken slices are thicker than 1/4 inch, pound them out one at a time between 2 sheets of plastic wrap or waxed paper with a meat mallet to a thickness of 1/4 inch.
Sprinkle chicken all over with salt and just enough of the almond flour to lightly coat both sides.
Beat the eggs in a wide, shallow bowl. In another wide, shallow bowl, mix the remaining almond flour with the Parmesan, paprika and garlic powder.
Dip chicken in the eggs to coat. Let the excess drip off, then coat thoroughly in the almond flour mixture. Place on a plate and repeat with the remaining chicken.
Heat 1/4 inch of ghee or avocado oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking. Add half the chicken and cook until golden on one side, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook until golden on the other side, another 3 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate and repeat with the remaining chicken, adding more ghee or oil of needed. Serve with lemon wedges.

SIMON Cowell has insisted his incredible two-stone weight-loss isn't down to getting a gastric band.
He told Closer: "Everyone thinks that I've had a gastric band, but if I'd had one, I'd just come out and say it.
4
I went on a diet and and I cut out all the things you shouldn't eat, and that was it."
The music mogul vowed he is telling the truth about not using a gastric band to lose an impressive two stone.
Many eyebrows were raised when the 60-year-old showed off his improved physique on holiday in Barbados last December, proudly sporting his new lean figure.
Simon has brushed the claims aside he had undergone surgery and explained he got a wake-up call after falling down the stairs in his London home in October 2017.
4
He told Closer that he would not have anything to hide if he did go under the knife.
Everyone thinks I've had a gastric band, but if I'd had one, I'd just come out and say it," Simon said.
"I went on a diet and I cut out all the things you shouldn't eat, and that was it."
Describing the foods he east now, Simon continued: "Pretty much all the things I loved, I can't eat. I eat loads of vegetables and salads, and I drink this great [light] beer. The most dramatic period was the first month, when most of the weight comes off.
4
"You look at yourself and think, 'Wow'. But I'm really happy now and I have loads more energy," he added.
Simon began a new health regime in April 2019, deciding to go Vegan and lost an incredible 20lbs as a result.
He used to consume his favourite foods like sausage rolls, hamburgers and his favourite jam tarts, which were made by his personal chefs.
But ahead of turning 60 and with the terrible fall in the back of his mind, Cowell wanted to change his ways.

The judge also wanted to lose weight to keep up with his son, as he did not have his first and only child until later in his life.
"[Losing weight] makes you feel better - it genuinely does. And Eric is just amazing!," he told Closer.
"He has just FaceTimed me and he's learned on the phone how to be an alien, a monster and a dragon, so I don't know who I'm talking to half the time, but he's just great."
He has also decreased the amount of sugar he eats, which helped improve his sleep and boost his energy levels.
He also mentioned that the food he eats is tasty, saying last month: "The food I eat is really healthy and I don't find it tedious. If its boring you won't stick to it."

One of the most common ways to reap the health benefits of lemon is by turning it into drinks like juice or lemon water. Consuming lemon drinks does not only helps to burn fat but also takes care of your overall health. This is owed to the fact that it is loaded with vitamin C, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The best part of this is that you dont have to go on a low-calorie diet or drink just lemon juice throughout the day to lose weight.
Lemon drinks act as a digestive and detoxifying agent, which helps in cleaning the liver leading to improve your digestive health. Lemon juice is an effective way to reduce weight because it increases the bodys metabolic rate. For people looking to use lemon for its weight loss abilities, drinking lemon juice with warm water on an empty stomach every morning can produce amazing results.

Due to its potential beneficial effects on metabolism, satiety, and hydration, some evidence suggests that water (including lemon water) could enhance weight loss. Lemons originally contain citric acid and pectin that assists digestion. The pectin present helps to slow down the rate at which the food leaves the stomach, which produces a feeling of fullness for a longer time.
The Jakarta Post
Because lemon water is also low in calories and can promote fullness, it can be an effective way to help reduce calorie intake. Reduction in the amount of food you consume daily automatically leads to weight loss.

Weight loss: Increasing this one thing is the key to burning belly fat, says expert – Express

Belly fat, or more specifically, getting rid of belly fat, is a popular topic among slimmers. Getting active and fit for many is a difficult mission especially when trying to focus on a specific area and getting little results. But dont be discouraged. Dr Michael Mosley, creator of the 5:2 diet and Fast800 programme recommends doing one simple thing to reduce stubborn belly fat - what is it?
Exercise and diet both play a crucial role in ensuring a slimmer gets the results a slimmer wants.
And according to Dr. Michael Mosley to lose belly fat, you need to eat smart, fast smart and train smart.
He also says there is one particular thing that is a key component to losing belly fat: insulin.
He explained: To lose belly fat, you need to understand the basics of how insulin works.
READ MORE: Weight loss: Woman lost an incredible 3 stone 2lb by following simple diet plan
Your body makes insulin after a meal in order to keep blood sugar stable. On your cell walls, insulin opens up glucose ports to allow sugar through for burning in muscle, and for storage in fat.
In your fat, insulin also curbs the release of fatty acids (a source of energy) into your system. All well and good as long as your insulin is working. However, as we age (and eat junk), cell-wall insulin receptors become less sensitive.
As a result, even after a meal, our blood is replete with glucose and fatty acids.
This is a toxic brew, driving an array of bad outcomes, including rapidly-expanding belly fat, he said. "As if this were not bad enough, fat cells in deep your abdomen also known as visceral fat are reluctant to let go of their energy-stash.
DON'T MISSTom Kerridge weight loss: Chef reveals clever trick[DIET PLAN]Eating more of this food can help you burn fat fast[TIP]Jimmy Carr weight loss: Incredibly simple trick comedian used to lose weight[ADVICE]
To find the extra energy needed to fuel a small energy deficit, or a standard gym session, your body will look to other reserves first, like your glutes. Fortunately, though, recent breakthroughs in medical and sports science have shown that it is possible to throw this gradient into reverse: you can lose belly fat, and you can lose it fast.
How can you reduce belly fat fast?
According to the doctor, there are three steps that a slimmer needs to do before seeing belly fat be reduced.
Michael said: To make a serious impact on your belly fat, cutting out sugar-spikes is key. A surprising number of diet snacks and drinks are high in sugar and are marketed as diet foods because they happen to be low in fat.
This is supported by numerous studies. When people cut carbs, their appetite goes down and they lose weight. Now over 20 randomised controlled studies have now shown that lower-carb diets can lead to two to three times more weight loss than low-fat diets.
So limit your intake of any food or drink containing more than five percent sugar to no more than twice a week. This includes sweet fruits like mango and pineapple, and sugary smoothies and juices. Likewise, replace processed carbs like white bread, chips and pasta with slow-release energy sources, such as brown rice or quinoa.
Two things will surprise you: the amount of sugar you were consuming unawares, and the speed at which your belly fat will begin to tame itself, he said.
The idea that fasting slows your metabolism is a myth, he said. Under conditions of marked energy deficit 800 calories per day or less not only do you simply lose weight by eating fewer calories, but your body responds to the stress of fasting by enhancing hormone function to facilitate weight loss and burn fat for energy.
Short-term fasting can lead to several changes in the body that make fat burning easier. This includes reduced insulin, increased growth hormone, enhanced epinephrine signalling and a small boost in metabolism.
According to a 2014 review of the scientific literature, intermittent fasting can cause weight loss of three to eight percent over three to 24 weeks. Not only this but people lost four to seven percent of their waist circumference as well indicating a large loss of the harmful belly fat in the abdominal cavity, strongly linked to chronic disease.
So want to shift that weight round your middle? Try intermittent fasting, he recommended.
He said: Exercise is key for various reasons. It is amongst the best things you can do for a long and healthy life. While exercise alone will not help you lose the stubborn fat from around your middle, it can be crucial for helping reduce the risk of re-gaining fats well as lowering blood sugar levels and improving insulin sensitivity," he explained.
How best to achieve this though? Research has shown the extraordinary impact that ultra-short bursts of HIIT (high intensity interval training) can have. All in just a few minutes. Not only is it effective, but study after study has shown it is much easier to stick to.
So conventional diet and training regimes dont help you to lose belly fat. And lets face it: surrounded by junk food, dosed with snacks and working in sedentary jobs, we live in an environment that piles it on. And yet more and more people are discovering that with the right lifestyle changes, they can burn it off. And most amazing? Its not as hard as you think, he said.

This time of year is so saturated with diet culture and black-and-white thinking about health and weight. Registered dietitian Brenna O'Malley, creator of the health blog The Wellful, told POPSUGAR, "Don't get sucked in! Freeing yourself from guilt around food and getting off the dieting cycle to tune in to your body and figure out what works and feels good to you is the best gift you can give yourself this season." She's referring to intuitive eating, which has been (thankfully) gaining popularity, but is it possible to eat intuitively and still lose weight?
Intuitive eating is a philosophy developed by registered dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch in their groundbreaking book from the '90s called Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works. "It's a way of eating that provides a path toward healing from disordered eating and creates peace in one's relationship with food and body," said Heidi Schauster, MS, a registered dietitian and the author of Nourish: How to Heal Your Relationship With Food, Body, and Self. When we aim to nourish and respect our bodies and not try to fix or change them, we enter into a more nurturing, caring relationship with them, no matter what the outcome is around weight, Heidi said.
When you commit to intuitive eating, Evelyn and Elyse said in their book, "you will be released from the prison of yo-yo weight fluctuations and food obsessions." It brings you back to when you were younger and you had no issues obsessing about food and your weight - back when you ate the foods you loved and were able to self-monitor how much you ate in a healthy way.
There are three possible outcomes when you start intuitive eating: weight loss, weight gain, or weight staying the same, said Kirsten Ackerman, MS, RD, CDN, who hosts the Intuitive Bites podcast and identifies as a fat-positive dietitian. She told POPSUGAR that all three outcomes are welcome, because weight is not the focus of intuitive eating.

Some people may experience unintentional weight loss with intuitive eating after breaking free from the restrict-binge cycle, while others will gain weight that they'd lost through restriction, explained Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, CDN, an anti-diet registered dietitian nutritionist, certified intuitive eating counselor, and host of the Food Psych podcast. Christy said that we can't predict what's going to happen for any particular person when they start eating intuitively, but in her experience, most people gain some weight in the early stages of intuitive eating because they've been deprived for so long.
"Intuitive eating isn't a diet; in fact, the intuitive eating approach is explicitly opposed to intentional weight-loss efforts," Christy said. She added that the true approach of intuitive eating "is anti-diet and anti-intentional-weight-loss. A true intuitive-eating provider will never promise weight loss as an outcome."
Healing your relationship with food and your body, and finding freedom from the physical and mental harm dieting can cause is what intuitive eating is all about. This means that "it's not possible to practice intuitive eating while pursuing intentional weight loss," Kirsten said. She added that intentional weight loss disconnects you from your body by placing the focus on the external variable of body weight. When intentional weight loss is the goal, honoring and supporting your body's needs becomes a secondary goal. "The process of intuitive eating puts trust in the body to restore weight to a place it feels comfortable maintaining when being adequately nourished," Kirsten explained.

It's totally understandable, expected, and normal to have the desire to lose weight in this culture, especially for higher-weight people who are constantly bombarded with messages that their bodies are wrong and need shrinking, Christy said. Giving up the pursuit of weight loss is challenging, and even harder the more weight stigma you've experienced in your life and the longer you've been dieting. If you've been stuck in the cycle for decades, it's incredibly difficult to move away from the dieting mentality, but it's also freeing.
Once you stop making weight loss your life's goal, you'll be able to make peace with food and your body, honor your hunger and fullness cues, break free from food obsessions and harmful dieting and exercise habits, and truly enjoy life.

DANCING With The Stars' Yewande Biala has opened up about her struggle to gain weight and getting bullied because she was 'so thin'.
The Love Island star has revealed that she has a fast metabolism which sees her eat 'all the time' to put on weight.

She opened up about the issue on her Reality Check podcast alongside fellow Islanders Anna Vakili and Amber Gill.
This week the show was dealt with their listeners' body concerns. Anna admitted that she constantly feels pressure to lose weight while Yewande has the opposite problem.
She said: "I lose weight really fast and I'm so self-conscious that I'm so thin.
"Everyone is always talking about, 'oh my god, yeah gaining weight' but losing weight is actually such a struggle."
Amber interrupted: "You eat all the time."
Yewande replied: "Yeah because I have to because I have a really fast metabolism and I was so upset when I thought I was losing weight.
"People are always like, 'oh my God you're not struggling, that's not a struggle'."
And the reality telly star revealed that being skinny is a sensitive topic for her because she was teased about it as a child.
She said: "When I was younger I used to get picked on because I was so thin.
"I didn't want to be thin. My nanny used to call me 'broom' and that really upset even though she thought it was a joke. I hated stuff like that.
"I've added weight. Before I literally looked like a twig and I hated it. I remember even going to school I'd wear trousers under my trousers because I hated it.
"I wouldn't change in front of anyone because I just hated how skinny I was. The way you struggle to lose weight is the way I struggle to put the weight on.
"I eat so much and it's because I have to. If I don't eat I end up looking like a stick and I hate it.
"That's why I go to the gym, that's why I work so hard."
Yewande explained that the pressure on young women today contributes to their obsession with weight.
She said: "I think it's so important for people not to try to lose weight because society is telling them or to gain weight because society is telling them you have to be like slim thick.

"There's so much pressure from social media that you have to be happy in yourself and know what you want and just be healthy.
"I think that's probably the most important thing."
This comes after Yewande recounted a scary date she had with a "psycho".

Theres a lot more you can do to de-food fret and overcome your food-related anxieties, self-recrimination, judgment, and guilt. Here are some suggestions to transcend the cycle of dieting and obsessing about food and weight.
Dont obsess about dieting. One consequence of ongoing dieting can be increased obsession about food, eating, and weight. Indeed, more and more research is linking traditional dieting with increased risk of weight gain. Consider dieting in the best sense of the word: as a way of life and eating were telling you about in this book.
And consider this: from the perspective of the Whole Person Integrative Eating dietary lifestyle, food in itself is not sinful, good, bad, right, or wrongunless youre projecting moral attributes onto it and onto yourself! Nor is food something to be counted, feared, and analyzed. In other words, Im suggesting that, instead of viewing food through the lens of todays new normal of judgment, relate to it as an expression of the ancient meaning of the word diet, in the lens of Whole Person Integrative Eating: as a social, ceremonial, and sensual delight and as a gift that enhances your physical, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being each time you eat.
Stop counting calories compulsively. Traditional diets that ask you to restrict calories and to eat by the numbers (counting calories, fat grams, and so on) dont work for the long term. Counting calories by itself is not a problem; a compulsive and obsessive attitude about calories is. To lose weight, consider other ways of relating to food so that each time you eat you have an enjoyable experience that nourishes your entire being. Instead of staying lost in a maze of measurements, nutrients, and numbers, focus on fresh foods (see chapter 8, Fast Foodism Rx: Get Fresh for more about this), delicious flavors, the profound pleasure of eating, and the de- light you take in dining with others. In other words, bring heartfelt appreciation to all aspects of the dining experience.
Give up guilt-tripping when you overeat. Guilt and its relativesself-reproach, shame, remorse, and blameare part of a food fretters relationship to food. Its all about what is right and what is wrong. Eat something wrong that isnt in your diet, that you shouldnt eat, or that tastes sinful, andif youre a food fretteryoure likely to respond with guilt.
Consider this: guilt isnt a real feeling. At its core lies the belief youve done something wrong, and now you must suffer for it. To break that conviction and get the upper hand over guilt, change what you choose to believe with the WPIE guideline of bringing heartfelt appreciation to foodand its origins. If you overeat, appreciate and savor the experience. Should you relapse, enjoy the experienceespecially if it was with food you like! Finally, forgive yourself, for forgiveness is a necessity in any relationshipincluding the one you have with food. Then return to your usual Whole Person Integrative Eating dietary lifestyle.
Cease obsessing. If youre fixated on and preoccupied with food-related thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, if you think or worry about food or weight constantly and compulsively, you are obsessing. The way out is to step from the shade in which youre living, into the sunshine. Our WPIE Guided Meal Meditation in chapter 13 in this book can help you do this. It can show you how to replace obsessive, food-related thoughts and feelings with the nourishing guidelines (fresh food, positive feelings, mindfulness, gratitude, loving regard, and sharing) inherent in Whole Person Integrative Eating.
Cultivate awareness. To overcome Food Fretting, familiarize yourself with the strongest elements of food fretters: obsessing about food; anxiety about the best way to eat; food cravings; and feeling bad, guilty, or gluttonous in response to overeating. The second step: when one of these elements surfaces, cultivate awareness by having a self-monitoring strategy in place that you can turn to, such as keeping a log of any critical, judgmental, or obsessive thoughts you may have. Then pause, take a slow, deep breath, and let the thought pass on.
