Obese mother, 27, who battled a fast food addiction loses 8st after surgery – Infosurhoy

A woman has revealed how her boyfriend asked her to stop losing weight after gastric surgery because it made him insecure.

Kylie Hansen, 27, from Taft, California, had been overweight all her life and would eat huge portions of processed food until she tipped the scales at 260lbs, wearing size 18 clothing.

She first decided to try andlose weightin 2013 after realizing that her weight could cause serious health issues but after she underwent a gastric sleeve gastrectomy and began shedding pounds, her partner revealed he was unhappy with her transformation.

My boyfriend at the time of my surgery was my first and we had been together for roughly four years. He was not supportive, she said.

He felt more insecure the more I lost weight and eventually asked me to stop losing weight.

At one point, people started saying I was too small. But I didnt let it bother me. I gradually gained the courage and confidence to leave the relationship and learned to only accept people in my life who bring the energy I needed and wanted.

Kylie has since lost 112lbs and is a happily married mother-of-one.

She decided to go under the knife to have a vertical sleeve gastrectomy and followeda rigorous dietary and exercise plan for more than two years before dropping to 170lbs and a dress size of 10-12.

I wasnt educated on nutrition. I turned to food for everything. When I was sad, I ate. When I was happy, I ate. When we celebrated, we ate. Everything I did revolved around food, she said.

People dont realize that food addiction is real and thats exactly what I battled.

I had a great life with lots of friends. I didnt let my obesity take over the quality of my life, but I knew if I didnt change something soon, I would eventually have health issues that could take over.

In the surgery they remove a portion of your stomach and is shaped to resemble a banana. The surgery is a tool to help kick-start the weight loss.

The mother reveals her addiction to food post-surgery was difficult as she could only eat very small portions.

Waking up from surgery and being told you cant eat that was the hardest part for me. Our brains are still wired the same. If I had a food addiction prior to surgery, I still had that addiction after surgery, she said.

I vividly remember my first restaurant trip after the operation. I ordered clam chowder, and had to scoop out everything inside the soup except the broth.

I remember crying because of how hard it was for me to not eat the foods I so badly wanted.

Kylie cut out her typical college kid eating habits of ramen, sugary cereal and frozen meals. Long gone are her days of fast food and no exercise.

Reducing her daily calorie intake from 2,500 to 1,500, Kylie now starts her day with two eggs, one slice of toast and broccoli.

Snacks of superfood shakes and peanut butter apples keeps her going throughout her day, which includes at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.

Kylie eats very little processed food andtucks into ground turkey with vegetables for lunch, and grilled chicken with sweet potato and beans for dinner.

But Kylie reveals her weight loss journey wasnt without its struggles and she found herself addicted to losing weight.

I struggled with becoming obsessive to the idea of being skinny something I had never experienced before. I struggled with my addiction to food and had to train my brain to want and crave foods that fuelled my body and not order the amount of food I was previously eating, she said.

I struggled when I reached my three-year post-op mark. I became addicted to losing weight and it was my only priority at the time.

I was very self-conscious and still saw my 260lbs body in the mirror.

Kylie has since married Jacob, 28. The couple used to be on the same swim team and have been friends since year nine.

Kylie and her army-husband live together with their two-year-old son Jameson.

But over six years on, the quality of my life is much better. I can do things I wasnt able to do before. I love running and now turn to exercise as my stress reliever.

I have learned that I need to be a good example for my son and future children. I have learned how mentally tough I am, and how much work it takes mentally and physically to be on a health journey.

The mother is now grateful for losing the weight, and it has inspired her whole family to have the surgery and look after their health.

My entire family was obese, and we all eventually had weight loss surgery. Im proud to say that weve all made our health a priority and are living our best lives. Its been great having each of them for support.

I had no idea how much my life would change after I grabbed my health by the horns.

Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill may be the fastest player in the NFL, but this year hes hoping to compete with the fastest runners in the world.

Hill said that he would like to see if he could qualify for the 2020 Olympics, which take place in Tokyo from July 24 to August 9.

Hopefully after this season, if Im healthy and my mind is still in the right place, I really want to try to qualify for some Olympic teams, Hill said.

Asked if he was serious about this and had looked into it, Hill said, Yeah. Yeah, I have. I have.

Hill acknowledged, however, that hed have to change a lot about what he eats and how he trains, and that wouldnt necessarily leave him in top football shape.

But the thing is, I weigh like 195 right now. Back in high school, when I ran a 9.9[-second 100-meter dash], I was like 175. So it would be me changing my whole diet that Ive been doing to get to where I am now, Hill said.

Hill would be an extreme long shot to make the U.S. Olympic team, but it would be interesting to see him try.

Screws, drills, and green peppers: a look at orthopedic surgery at HGH – The Review Newspaper

Knee surgery and broken bones remind us of old age, or a ski trip gone wrong. However, doctors can, and do help people who need knee surgery or repair for bone fractures locally at the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital (HGH).

At a recent donor appreciation event for the HGH Foundation, representatives from the Orthopedic Program displayed methods used to detect and repair broken bones at the hospital.

HGH Operating Room Manager of the Medical Device Reprocessing Department Michael Flahauw displayed specially designed screws that look surprisingly like what is sold in hardware stores. But the screws Flahauw has are used to repair simple fractures in ankles and clavicles. Flahauw oversees the proper sterilization of devices and objects used in surgery.

For multiple fractures, locking screws and metal plates are put in place to contain the bone and facilitate healing. Screws were generally inserted only at 90-degree angles. However, new varieties allow them to be inserted at different angles.

Flahauw also displayed the drill and other tools doctors use for orthopedic surgery. The drill looks like an ordinary power drill, but smaller.

Arthroscopy, which includes knee surgery, has been available at HGH for two months now.

Director of Clinical Services Daniel Lebreux said arthroscopic surgery services in Hawkesbury will soon expand to include shoulder surgery. He said that having theses services available in Hawkesbury means patients do not have to travel to Ottawa for the procedures.

Doctors use a small camera inside a small hand-held wand to look inside the knee and find out where the problems are and where work must be done. The small camera has an incredibly bright light and variable zoom that allows doctors to see a lot, and very close up.

To demonstrate, Lebreux was using a green pepper, concealed inside a paper bag. In addition to being great in a salad or on a pizza, he said a green pepper is similar inside to a knee with passageways. He said the seeds could even represent deposits of calcium or arthritis.

As Lebreux moved the camera around inside the green pepper, every fibre of the vegetable was visible in fine detail on a nearby screen, demonstrating the equipments precision.

Yankees: Looking at Andy Pettittes Hall Of Fame Chances – Yanks Go Yard

When Andy Pettitte entered his first year of eligibility for Cooperstown, he proved to be an enigma. He only garnered 9.9% of the BBWAA voting, with other pitchers like former Yankees teammate Mike Mussina and the late Roy Halladay getting the call for the Hall.

More controversial pitchers like Rodger Clemens and Curt Schilling stole the headlines along with a good chunk of votes. Much like his playing career, Pettitte has been lowkey and overlooked yet always in the conversation. This year, he had a slight uptick in votes, earning 45 votes for 11.3% but this is not enough to suggest a rapid trend would happen any time soon.

Why is Pettitte overshadowed, even in a lighter ballot like this years? Its hard to pinpoint but there are some aspects that are making voters think twice. The most obvious one is his brief connection to PEDs. He openly confessed to using HGH to rehab from injury in 2002 but remained clean thereafter. He also confessed quickly and honestly, plus HGH wasnt banned until 2005.

These are big reasons why hes never in the middle of the fire when it comes to the PED debate but it does rub some voters the wrong way. This is especially true if there are more obvious choices on the ballot.

The next is his ERA. An ERA of 3.85 is quite high for the Hall of Fame but it isnt the end all be all it used to be. Tigers legend Jack Morris, who was inducted in 2018, has an ERA of 3.90,good for the worst in the Hall of Fame. Pettittes postseason ERA isnt squeaky clean either, as he possesses a 3.81. Pettitte also doesnt rank highly when it comes to JAWS (Jaffe Wins Above Replacement, an awesome abbreviation for a sabermetric by the way). The known Hall of Fame average is 61.8. Pettittes is 47.2. Voters have also noted that Pettitte had only 3 seasons with a WAR above 4.0. He never won the CY Young but always remained within contention.

It would seem everything is stacked against the southpaw legend but Pettitte has plenty going for him, especially when it comes to postseason records. Pettitte is well known for having the most wins (19), innings pitched (276 and 2/3) and games started (44) in postseason history.

Pettittes October accolades wipe the floor of some Hall of Fame pitchers. His 5 rings prove it. Pettittes ice-cold demeanor on the mound froze numerous bats in key situations. His moxie and intelligence during the 1996 World Series were immense, not to mention his ridiculous sinker in the 2009 World Series.

Among his fellow Yankee legends, Pettitte ranks 3rd in wins (219), 1st in strikeouts (2020), and tied for 1st with Whitey Ford in games started (438)to go alongside his postseason records. With the pick off becoming more and more common in the 70s and 80s, Pettitte became the most dominant user of this weapon in the late 90s and 2000s. He recorded 98 pickoffs, which ranks among the best in baseball history (Steve Carlton takes the cake for first with 144 pickoffs).

Hes won 256 games and there are only five pitchers since 1901 with more wins who are not in the Hall of Fame. Those beingTommy John, Jim Kaat, Jamie Moyer, former teammate CC Sabathia, and most famously, Roger Clemens. While his ERA is high for Hall of Fame standards, his adjusted ERA (or ERA+) of 117 ranks above Steve Carlton, Fergie Jenkins, Robin Roberts, Nolan Ryan, and Don Sutton.

So, with all of this nerd information in hand, where does this leave us when it comes to Andy getting in the Hall? Joe Torre put it best.I dont think Andys going to get as much attention as he deservesAnd that has been the case.

Voters dont see the value Pettitte had both with the Yankees and the Astros. A key cog for any playoff team. While he was never the top ace, say besides 1997, he was always a consistent, reliable hand. ESPN predicts that Pettitte could eithermake it in 2026 alongside CC, many parts in thanks to a potentially weak ballot, or in the 2030s as a Veterans Committee selection.

It could take a while but but hopefully someday Pettitie will be inducted into Cooperstown alongside fellow core four members Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

The researchers attributed this to the high amount of fat in the diet - the mice were consuming more fat than they could burn and burdening their bodies.

A ketogenic diet is composed mostly of fat as 90% of the calories are meant to come from fat and proteins make up the remainder. The idea is to deprive the body of carbohydrates as much as possible. Ideally, less than 50g of carbohydrates should be consumed in a day. Vegetables and fruits contain carbohydrates, but leafy greens and certain berries can be consumed, albeit with restraint. Pulses, rotis, and foods containing added sugar will need to be avoided. All kinds of fats are permitted, and unsaturated fats especially so - they make up the majority of the diet.

The diet aims to use a different kind of fuel to run the body. Rather than glucose, a body that has been on the keto diet will run on ketone bodies instead. The liver produces ketone from stored fat, so the body effectively begins burning fat to fuel itself. It believes that it is in a state of starvation when in reality it is not. With the release of ketone bodies, gamma delta T-cells are also released which lower inflammation and risks associated with diabetes. For example, the mice had lower blood sugar at the end of the week.

However, the researchers found that during this fat burning process, fat from the diet continues getting stored in the body anyway. What this meant for the mice was that they started gaining weight after being on the diet for a longer time. This led to obesity and an increased likelihood of getting diabetes. It appears that the high-fat content of the diet eventually works against it.

The researchers hope to use these findings to better understand the workings of the ketogenic diet and perhaps come up with recommendations on the duration of the diet.

The 29-year-old's return has surely come too soon for boss Zinedine Zidane to risk him in Sunday's LaLiga clash at Valladolid.

But Belgium midfielder Hazard wants to quickly make up for his disappointing first half of the season, including just one goal in 13 games.

He certainly looked in peak shape on Thursday at Real's Valdebebas training base.

But even his weight was one aspect questioned when many supporters slated his early displays.

Hazard himself admitted this month he had piled on 11 pounds while holidaying just before his Real arrival.

But he insisted he only lets his body go when on vacation - then loses the weight just as rapidly.

He told AS: "I gained five kilos in summer. I am one of those who gain weight quickly and lose it fast if I pay attention.

"When I was 18, in Lille, I weighed 72 (11 st 4lbs) 73 kilos . Then, when I gained muscle mass, I went to 75 - On a bad day, 77.

"This summer I reached 80 kilos (12st, 8lbs). I lost everything in ten days."

Hazard returns to fitness with Real second on goal difference behind Barca, who face what seems a tougher trip this weekend, to Valencia on Saturday.

‘The Biggest Loser’ is back on TV. Get ready for ramped-up fat-shaming and dangerous diets. – NBC News

There was a time in the mid-2000s when I was a huge fan of "The Biggest Loser" (no pun intended), a weight loss competition show that aired on NBC for 17 seasons from 2004 to 2016. I wasn't alone: Throughout its run, the show, which featured teams competing to lose the largest percentage of their original weight under the guidance of a seemingly sadistic personal trainer, brought in 5 million to 10 million viewers an episode.

When I was watching the show, I was unsurprisingly as consumed with losing weight as the contestants were: I did everything you saw on the show, from keeping a meticulous food and exercise journal to counting Weight Watchers points to obsessively weighing myself throughout the day. I also hid diet pills in my sock drawer, I went on "cleanses," and I misused laxatives to prevent myself from absorbing calories properly. Some days, I wouldn't eat at all eventually collapsing into bed lightheaded and deeply proud of myself.

And the whole time, I'd be watching "The Biggest Loser" for the sweet validation that everything I was doing to my body much of which was dangerous was for my own good. I, like so many others, believed that my weight "problem" was about my weakness, my lack of self-control, my failure.

I eventually let go of my obsession with becoming thin, and NBC seemingly let go of "The Biggest Loser" when it faded out without ceremony after its final season in February 2016. But now NBCUniversal (the parent company of NBC News) has revived the show on the USA Network this month as "a new holistic, 360-degree look at wellness."

Perhaps NBCUniversal executives hope that we've all forgotten that the show's "weight loss program" doesn't work in the long term: The majority of contestants gain the weight back and ruin their metabolisms. Or maybe the executives who approved its return to our airwaves think we don't care about the litany of former contestants' testimonies detailing the verbal abuse, eating disorders, mental illness and drug abuse that they experience on or after the show.

Ryan C. Benson, the show's first winner, warned about the dangerous fasting and dehydration he experienced while on the show, "to the point that he was urinating blood." Season Two's Lezlye Mendonca reported that contestants would use "amphetamines, water pills, diuretics, and throw up in the bathroom." Former trainer Jillian Michaels who most recently made headlines for concern-trolling Lizzo admitted that she gave her team caffeine pills to give them "more energy" to exercise. (Michaels, who was among the worst offenders among the trainers, seemingly took particular joy in berating the contestants, saying things like "it's fun watching other people suffer like that" a quote NBC thought was so great that it put it in that season's promo.)

Joelle Gwynn from the 2008 "Couples" season reported that the show's doctor gave her "yellow and black pills" which, according to the New York Post, she later found out were most likely ephedra, a weight loss supplement banned by the Food and Drug Administration in 2004 after it killed over 150 people to help her lose weight (he denied it) and that trainer Bob Harper (the host of the USA Network reboot) encouraged contestants to consume fewer calories than the doctors deemed safe and that he even supported vomiting.

One of the most outspoken former contestants has been Kai Hibbard, the second-place winner on the third season, in 2006. A year after her season ended, she would become one of the show's biggest critics, eventually calling her participation "the biggest mistake of my life."

I spoke with Hibbard, who is now a social worker and activist and the author of "Losing It: A Fictional Reimagining of My Time on Weight Loss Reality TV." She said, "I had hoped with all the studies, all the other contestants who have spoken out I thought it was enough to kill" the show.

"When I joined the show, I was like most other people: I was spoon-fed this myth my entire life that being thin meant you were healthier," Hibbard added. "Then I went through the whole process of the show and discovered the techniques they gave me to be thinner. I realized how sick, how physically ill they made me. That connection between thin and healthy was broken for me."

Hibbard said people still feel entitled to comment about her body, particularly because she's remained straight size because of a battle with lupus. "When people praise me for my body now, it's a reminder of how much size is not related to health, because right now I'm the sickest I've ever been," she said.

Dr. Lindo Bacon, author of "Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight," told me: "The misinformation that the show gives about dieting is abhorrent. We know these tactics aren't successful to lose weight that will be maintained in the long term. All it is doing is helping people feel bad."

Unlike dieting, the negativity the show encourages about fat people does work. A 2012 study found that watching just one episode of "The Biggest Loser" exacerbated people's dislike of fat people and heightened viewers' belief that weight is controllable. Another study in 2013 also found that watching the show reinforced beliefs that weight gain is entirely in one's individual control thus the idea that fat people are to blame for not taking personal responsibility for their health.

"It's a myth that we have any data to support losing weight is going to be helpful," Bacon said.

Another 2013 study reviewed the literature on how dieting affects health indicators like cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose levels pretty much every area of concern that trolls purport to be so worried about when criticizing fat people. It showed that across all studies, virtually nothing improved with weight loss. The authors were unequivocal: "Weight, as we reviewed here, turns out to be an inadequate proxy for health outcomes."

While there's no proof that losing weight does anything for a fat person's health, we have plenty of evidence that anti-fat bias and weight discrimination compounded by shows like "The Biggest Loser" contribute to fat people being paid less, facing a higher risk for suicide and depression and receiving terrible medical care.

If people like former trainer Jillian Michaels really care so much about fat people's health and well-being, perhaps they should start by attacking anti-fat bias, rather than attacking fat people.

As a fat person, you're bombarded with messages that you are something to be fixed, rather than someone to be loved and accepted. "These outside messages are telling you that you would be treated better if you changed yourself," Bacon said. "No matter how much we hear this, the problem is not you. It's our culture."

In the new trailer, a contestant says: "I'm hoping to gain confidence. I'm hoping to gain self-love." Those words broke my heart, because I know exactly how he feels. Diet culture and shows like "The Biggest Loser" thrive on the lie that fat people are unhappy, unhealthy and unmotivated; there is no space in "The Biggest Loser" for a happy fat person. But we don't have to live like that.

Despite everything she's been through, Hibbard is optimistic. "When I went on the show, I wanted to change myself to fit into a society that told me I was wrong. At this point in my life, I want to change society," she said.

I'm hopeful, too, because now, for every executive who greenlights a show like " The Biggest Loser," there are people like Hibbard, Bacon and me insisting that fat people are worth more than just a number on a scale.
