Drops of God Star Tomohisa Yamashita Talks Wine, Losing Weight … – Rotten Tomatoes
Written by the sibling duo of Yuko and Shin Kibayashi (as Tadashi Agi), The Drops of God was an influential manga series in Japan. Its main characters, Shizuku Kanzaki and Issei Tomine, were locked in a contest to taste and evaluate the so-called Twelve Apostles of wine and, ultimately, a final vintage known as the Drops of God. Told across roughly 15 years in the pages of Kondashas Weekly Morning magazine and collected into 70 volumes, its two storylines represented something different in the cooking genre of manga, and it proved popular enough to spawn a Japanese television adaptation in 2009.
It also became an international hit, sparking a new interest in wine among young people in several countries and the English language translation reaching The New York Times bestseller list for manga. And now it has been adapted for an Apple TV+ series: Drops of God from Legendary Entertainment.
The story is a little bit different, though. Series creator and writer Quoc Dang Tran and director Oded Ruskin reimagine Shizuku Kanzaki as French resident Camille Lger (Fleur Geffrier), the daughter of a renowned oenologist who comes to visit him for the first time in decades, but learns he died while she was in transit. Instead of a tense reunion, she discovers the specifications of his last will and testament require her or his protg, Issei Tomine (Tomohisa Yamashita) to correctly identify the label, vintage, and year of a selection of wines over a period of several months. The prize: the deceaseds home in Tokyo and a wine collection worth upwards of $150 million. But Camille has no training in oenology, the study of wines, and taking even a drop of alcohol produces a violent reaction within her.
Issei, meanwhile, benefits from years of training at the side of Camilles father. And as Rotten Tomatoes learned while speaking with Yamashita about playing Issei, the role required some knowledge on the subject. The actor also discussed include the impact of the manga in Japan, the family conflict at the heart of Isseis story, and the satisfaction Yamashita, a pop star in the early part of the century who always wanted to focus on acting, gets from roles like the rival sommelier.
Erik Amaya for Rotten Tomatoes: To what extent did you immerse yourself in wine culture? Oenology is so complicated and Issei makes it seem so effortless. How much wine tasting did you do?
Tomohisa Yamashita: I took 40 hours of lessons from the Academy teacher before I left Japan. After I landed in Paris, one of the sommeliers took me to the great restaurants, and then we drank a lot of wine and tasted amazing food and try to marry [the qualities and tastes]. And then, we actually shot this series in the middle of vineyard. The owner of the winery told us what the wine is about. Through that experience, Ive learned so many things.
Although this adaptation drops the adventure aspect of the manga series, and many of the characters have been renamed, the underlying relationships remain intact. In regard to Issei, how much do think changed from the page to the screen?
Yamashita: I think its a good balance. The manga is more focused on the exploration of the wine, but the live action is more focused on the human drama. So, I think it was a good change. I also respect the mangas fun, as well. I took the philosophy from the manga [to help build Issei].
I understand that cooking stories are a big genre or subgenre in manga, but the wine aspect of Drops of God seems unusual. Do you have a sense that it created something of a sensation with readers? Did it feel like it did something a little different?
Yamashita: It was huge hit, and the manga has a lot of influence. Actually, Japanese people know about wine from the manga!
Did you watch the previous adaptation or did you feel it was better to keep your version of Issei uninfluenced by what came before?
Yamashita: I watched the whole season [of the 2009 series], and its totally different if I compare it to the manga, but I really like the philosophy and this story about learning an outlook on life through wine. Just like wine, humans are made up from many things, which is in intricately intertwined. [Its] something that reminds us so we are part of nature.
In this series, Issei fights against the expectations of his family. Is that still a big issue in Japan, or is there more leeway for young people to find their own pursuits and passions?
Yamashita: I think thats real. It depends on, of course, the family. But I totally understand Isseis feelings, Isseis situation because, yeah, I think its real. He has a lot of pressure from the family, so he couldnt maybe show his feelings. Thats why maybe he tried to become a wine expert and I think hes describing his real emotion through the wine. Thats why he goes deep into it.
Its very sad, Isseis family, basically, they have everything but love. Their family shape is kind of weird [and its] very shocking.
Reading up on your career, it appears you knew that this is what you wanted all along and you found a way to get there. Were you supported in your pursuit of acting?
Yamashita: I really love to do acting, but, actually, my family is really supportive, so I really appreciate my familys support.
In the series, there are these depictions of Camilles interior journey that she goes on when attempting to sample the wine, but Isseis experiences remain an external thing. Do you think he experiences something as intense as she does, or is his examination of the wine more an analytical thing?
Yamashita: Camille has a superpower. Very, very sensitive her taste and the smells, but Issei doesnt have this kind of superpower. Thats why he tried to lose weight. When people lose some weight, [their sense of smells and taste] becomes more sensitive. So thats why I actually lost weight like five or six kilos [11-13 lbs.]. So, it was real hard for me. It was strict diet, but it was real. I tasted so many things and I realized the differences.
Are roles like Issei the kind that give you the most satisfaction? Although he is Camilles opponent, the story never presents him as a traditional antagonist.
Yamashita: Right before I played this the kind of elegant guy I played a naked crazy guy [in Alice in Borderland]. I actually enjoyed the differences. Its really fun. When I played Issei, I had a lot of layers [to explore with the character], so it was a fun process to make him. I enjoyed the character.
100% Drops of God: Season 1 (2023) debuts with its first two episodes on Friday, April 21 on Apple TV+.

He still makes time for his favourite treats, and enjoys a carvery lunch at his local.
There are several different ways to do intermittent fasting, but the main idea is the same - dedicating a certain portion of your day to eating and fasting the rest of the time.
Most people include their sleeping hours in the fasting time, and fast for 12 to 16 hours.
Many people who try it only eat within an eight hour window each day, for example 1-9pm.

Gervonta Davis’ trainer claims Bernard Hopkins secretly rubbed testosterone cream on the boxer – Daily Mail
By Alex Raskin Sports News Editor For Dailymail.com 01:04 23 Apr 2023, updated 15:22 23 Apr 2023
Golden Boy Promotions executive and boxing legend Bernard Hopkins has been accused of rubbing testosterone cream on Gervonta Davis in an alleged effort to taint the fighter's drug sample ahead of Saturday's bout with Ryan Garcia in Las Vegas.
Garcia, who is promoted by Golden Boy, had a tense face-off with Davis after Friday's weigh-in, which briefly devolved into a shoving match between the two 136-pound fighters. Hopkins stood on the periphery of the exchange, and appeared to rub his hand across Davis' back at one point, drawing the ire of the Baltimore native and his camp.
'I should've slapped the s*** outta B-Hop as soon as he touched me,' Davis wrote in a since-deleted tweet.
Then on Saturday, Davis' trainer Calvin Ford promoted a theory on social media that Hopkins was rubbing testosterone cream on the 28-year-old's back in order to taint a drug test.
'Coach beware of B hop and testosterone cream,' read a text message that Ford shared on Instagram. '[It] will make you test dirty. Be careful.'
Ford added his own caption: 'See this is why Bernard touch him.'
A Golden Boy spokesperson did not immediately respond to DailyMail.com's request for further comment.
Davis continued remarking on Hopkins after Friday's fracas.
'[Hopkins is] talking about he about that life, man, nobody's worried about his old ass, he needs to sit back and let the youngins do it,' Davis said Friday of the retired champion and former prison inmate, who has been stabbed numerous times.
In any case, both fighters managed to clear the 136-pound limit, which was previously agreed upon during their lengthy negotiations.
'Punishment, knockout. It's going to be crazy,' Davis said. 'Don't blink your eyes, don't get no popcorn, don't get no drinks, none of that. Make sure you're focused on the fight because it's gonna be an incredible fight.'
Boxing fans have spent the past couple of decades watching top fighters avoid each other in their primes and carefully pick lesser opponents so they can boost their records.
The lack of big-name bouts that would've driven even casual fans to order pay-per-view helped create a noticeable lack of buzz in the sport.
Saturday's 12-round lightweight showdown between the undefeated Davis and Garcia doesn't follow that path.
Both fighters are at the top of their games and because they opted to meet, they have sent needed electricity through the sport. The year's most-anticipated fight will take place Saturday in Las Vegas.
'I feel like this fight is big for the sport,' Davis, who is from Baltimore, said Thursday. 'We're drawing in a lot of people and a win on that night is really like winning a world title again.'
Garcia said seeing his face around the Las Vegas Strip brought home the meaning of this fight.
'This is what I've dreamed of since I was a little boy and now I'm here,' Garcia, who lives in Los Angeles, said Thursday.
Even though both sides recognize what Saturday means, there is genuine animosity between the boxers and their camps, a longtime war of words that continued through Thursday's news conference.
Davis accused Garcia of possessing only a left hook, and Garcia said Davis didn't have much punching power. They traded several barbs during the presser, calling each other delusional, and chirped again when they came face to face for the traditional pre-fight promotional pose.
Both promoters didn't hold back, either.
Oscar De La Hoya, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, got it started by saying Davis' camp kept asking for various contractual demands to be met, which 'points to a team looking to protect their fighter. ... Nothing feels worse than your team not believing in you.'
'That is a confident fighter,' De La Hoya said, looking at Garcia. 'That's why you're going to see Ryan come out as the new face of boxing Saturday night.'
Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, didn't back down.
'We're the A-side of the situation,' Ellerbe said. 'That's how the A-side carries itself.'
Some of the back-and-forth likely was promotional schtick, but given the fight is a sellout and is expected to bring in major pay-per-view numbers, it didn't need much extra hype.
De La Hoya and Ellerbe knew what was at stake when negotiating this match, and they put whatever differences they had aside to make it happen.
'It's not often in today's age you see two young fighters both undefeated, both in their prime, step in the ring together,' said Tom Brown, president of TGB Promotions. 'This fight will be an instant classic, an all-out war, a Hagler versus Hearns. The good thing is with Tank Davis, we have Hagler.'
Marvin Hagler knocked out Thomas Hearns in the third round of their epic 1985 fight, one of the most action-packed bouts in history.
The Davis-Garcia winner could set up a showdown with undefeated Devin Haney, who owns all four major championship belts in this division. Haney faces former champ Vasiliy Lomachenko in May, also in Las Vegas.
Davis is a minus-290 favorite, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, and he has devastating power. Of his 28 victories, 26 have come by knockout.
Part of what makes this match so intriguing is both boxers are capable of ending it at nearly any time. Garcia has won 19 of 23 matches through knockouts.
It's like the 1990s when boxing fans knew they couldn't miss any part of a Mike Tyson fight because he could end it within seconds. In this case, both boxers are capable of doing that.
A great show could elevate Davis or Garcia into a Tyson-like status that boxing badly needs, or at least begin generating the types of conversations in combat sports that have most recently been reserved for mixed martial arts.
In the co-main event, undefeated WBA super middleweight champion David Morrell Jr. faces former Olympic bronze medalist Yamaguchi Falcao. Morrell, 25, is 8-0 with seven knockouts, and 35-year-old Falcao is 24-1-1 who has won eight matches in a row, including five last year.
FanDuel lists Morrell as a minus-1,800 favorite.

Foods That Boost Testosterone Naturally – Health.com
Testosterone is the primary sex hormone in males. Its produced in the Leydig cells in the testes, and it plays an important role in sex drive, bone mass, body composition, muscle mass and strength, voice timbre, and sperm production.
Certain foods can boost your testosterone levels, or lower them. Researchers of a 2021 study followed 3,283 Taiwanese men over six years and found that those who ate a low-quality diet had poorer testicular function and low testosterone levels. The men who ate a diet rich in leafy greens, legumes, and dairy had better testicular function and testosterone levels. A poor diet was defined as: A typical Western diet with lots of processed meats and fish, deep-fried foods, organ meats, and flour products cooked in oil.
You can boost low testosterone levels naturally by eating a healthy diet and adding a few foods that are known to help boost testosterone levels. Heres a look at some foods to include.
A 2020 study following men and women with obesity found that taking fish oil with omega-3 fatty acids upped testosterone levels in men, but not women. The study found that DHA, a type of fatty acid found in fish, was particularly helpful.
Another older study from 2013 showed that fish oil and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) increased testosterone synthesis and may help boost athletic performance for both endurance and resistance training.
The 2021 study of Taiwanese men previously mentioned found that consuming milk and dairy products protected against low testosterone levels. Another 2019 study of middle-aged and elderly men in Taiwan also drew a similar conclusion. Fortified milk is a key source of Vitamin D, which is essential for testosterone production. Ensuring vitamin D levels are within normal limitsmay it be with food, sunlight, or supplementationis vital for overall hormone health. However, more research is needed to draw robust conclusions on how dairy products affect testosterone production.
The Taiwanese study found that eating legumesa family that includes beans, peas, and peanutscan protect against low testosterone levels and poor testicular function. This may be due to the fact that legumes are rich in two nutrients associated with higher testosterone levels: zinc and magnesium.
Dark, leafy greens are nutrient-dense, high in fiber, and filled with micronutrients that promote good health. The Taiwanese study also found that men who ate more dark, leafy greens had higher testosterone levels than men who did not. A 2018 study also saw similar results.
Natural medicine practitioners often point to honeys many uses, from soothing a childs sore throat to its antibacterial properties. A 2019 review of the literature also found that honey can increase testosterone levels in men by increasing the production of luteinizing hormone, enhancing the viability of Leydig cells, reducing oxidative damage in Leydig cells, and inhibiting aromatase activity in the testes. However, more research on humans are still needed to confirm the effect of honey on testosterone.
A 2019 review concluded that onions may help male testosterone levels by increasing the production of luteinizing hormone, enhancing the antioxidant defense mechanism in the testes, and defending against inflammation and insulin resistance. However, more clinical trials are needed to determine how onion can increase testosterone levels in humans.
Whole eggs contain cholesterol, which your body needs to make testosterone. A 2021 study following young men on a weight training program over 12 weeks saw that those men who ate eggs daily increased their testosterone levels. They were separated into two groups, one that ate three whole eggs daily and one that ate six egg whites. The researchers found that the group that ate the entire eggs increased their testosterone level more.
Studies have shown that eating high levels of flavonoids, a group of helpful compounds in many fruits and vegetables, is good for your health, and for producing testosterone. Some studies show flavonoids can prevent, or delay, hypogonadism (decreased functional activity of the gonads) in males as they age.
Foods high in flavonoids include:
Oysters are full of zinc, a mineral thats essential for making testosterone. While taking in extra zinc may ensure youre not deficient, getting more than you need wont do much to increase your testosterone level.
There are countless herbs on the market that tout their testosterone-boosting effects but have little evidence backing up those claims. However, a 2021 meta-analysis found that these four herbs show promise, although more research is needed:
You can make other changes to help improve your testosterone levels.
Getting active yields lots of benefits, from improved mood, weight control, and fitness to increased testosterone levels in men. Strength and endurance training (cardio) can both increase your testosterone levels.
Research shows that people who are overweight or have obesity show lower circulating levels of testosterone. Getting to a healthier weight may help your overall health as well as your testosterone levels. Just be sure not to eat too little because this can also negatively impact your testosterone levels.
Eating a healthy diet with enough fat is important for overall health and testosterone levels. Cholesterol comes from some types of fat, and thats what your body uses to make the hormone. Some studies recommend getting 25% of your calories from fat.
Some studies show that when men are sleep deprived, their testosterone levels lower. A natural way to increase your testosterone is by focusing on getting meaningful and adequate sleep.
Environmental factors and unhealthy lifestyles can contribute to low testosterone levels.
Your level is considered low when a blood test shows testosterone levels below 300 nanograms per deciliter (dl) for males, and 15 nanograms per deciliter for females. If its lower than that, you may have a condition called hypogonadism.
Low testosterone can cause symptoms such as:
Several factors can influence your testosterone levels. Some of them, you cant control (like age). Others, such as your diet, alcohol or drug use, body weight, and activity level, you can control. Heres a look at the major factors.
Male testosterone levels generally start decreasing gradually after age 30. Levels decrease by 0.4% to 2% a year. Some studies show that up to 50% of middle-aged people with diabetes or obesity go on to develop hypogonadism.
Men who are overweight or have obesity tend to have lower testosterone levels. Talk with your healthcare provider about what a healthy weight looks like for you and how to achieve it.
On the flip side, having too big a gap between the calories you burn and the calories you use can also decrease your testosterone. A 2021 review of studies also found that low-fat diets decreased testosterone levels in men, especially those of European descent. The review authors concluded more research is needed to understand why.
Substance abuse can cause low testosterone levels. Alcohol, opioids, and steroids can reduce testosterone production, and nicotine, cannabis, and amphetamines can also impact your fertility. Reducing or eliminating these substances can help you regain healthy hormone levels.
Many supplements claim to boost testosterone, but a 2019 study found less than a quarter had any evidence to back their claims. Some, about 10%, actually lowered testosterone.
A poor-quality diet with too few nutrients and too many calories can lead to weight gain, obesity, metabolic issues, and lower testosterone levels. Researchers have found that some foods are especially detrimental. They include:
Many things can cause your testosterone levels to drop, from aging to a less-than-ideal diet, substance abuse, and inactivity.
The good news is that you can boost your testosterone levels by fine-tuning your diet and adding new foods. Some foods to include are fish oil, dairy products, leafy greens, legumes, fruits and vegetables containing flavonoids, and oysters.

Providers are too cautious with testosterone therapy. The myth is that increasing testosterone level will cause prostate cancer. If you start with a myth, you have to disprove that myth with a trial that is probably too big to ever conduct and that nobody will ever fund. Although repeated studies have shown no risks with testosterone therapy, those small studies are never looked at.
Testosterone therapy crosses a number of specialties, and we are a bit locked into our specialties. For example, the European Association of Urology recommends that anybody starting testosterone needs three rectal examinations in the first 12 months. The endocrinologists published guidelines that do not require a digital rectal exam at all. When you have guidelines, you need to make sure you have proper multidisciplinary panels.
If you read a summary of the T Trials, it tells you that there is high-level evidence that testosterone therapy improves cognitive function, improves muscular strength, improves insulin sensitivity, improves walking distance and sexual function. Yet in the final sentence, the experts say they advise caution until longer-term studies are available.
The European Male Aging Study showed that a 20% reduction in weight was required to achieve a significant reduction in free testosterone, and this is simply not achievable for the vast majority. Dietary interventions have repeatedly failed to produce meaningful long-term weight reduction, and U.S. obesity and diabetes rates increase year by year. In the T4DM trial, there was a 40% reduction in the testosterone therapy group for progression to diabetes. Diabetes is the biggest major health problem the U.S. faces. Testosterone therapy is a major step forward, but people just read the study and concluded they need longer-term information.
A bigger study is expected to come out later this year or early next. Im still not sure it will satisfy everybody. But I think there are quite good studies out there now.
There are certain cases where I think some people are being a little bit too cautious with testosterone. There are some doctors who may not be comfortable giving testosterone to a man who has coronary artery disease or a history of treated prostate cancer, whereas there are no good data showing that testosterone would harm men with this history.
But in many more cases, we have the opposite. Some clinics have been too liberal with dispensing testosterone for low libido or erectile dysfunction without doing an adequate assessment and evaluation. Many of these clinics are just out to make money by putting as many men on testosterone as possible. Testosterone should be prescribed to men who have androgen deficiency who are not able to make enough testosterone on their own.
Functional hypogonadism refers to low testosterone levels that are often borderline where there is no structural abnormality. A lot of times these causes are reversible. If you treat the underlying cause, that can reverse low testosterone levels without replacement therapy, for example, weight loss for obesity and increasing sleep in those with inadequate sleep.
We need more high-quality, randomized control trials that involve testosterone for a longer duration. A lot of patients are put on testosterone for years at a time, but we dont have studies examining the effects of taking testosterone for years at a time.

How Can Testosterone Affect Fertility and Sexual Function? – Giddy
The sex hormone affects sperm production, erections and much more.
We often think of testosterone as "the male hormone."
We see it as the secret sauce that makes the Rock so vein-poppingly muscular, the source of male aggression and the fountain from which mighty erections spring.
There's some truth to all that.
Testosterone is indeed responsible for giving males larger muscles, a deeper voice, facial hair and other secondary sexual characteristics. It's also used to help people transitioning from female to male to develop more of those same characteristics.
Women also produce small amounts of testosterone, just as males produce some estrogen, a hormone associated with female sexual characteristics.
We'll get down to the basic level of what testosterone is in the context of reproduction and sexual function, specifically, taking a closer look at how testosterone affects sperm production and fertility as well as erectile function and other aspects of sexual function.
We first encounter testosterone in the womb about six weeks after conception. Signals in male bodies ramp up testosterone production in order to begin the process of differentiating the fetus's "bipotential" reproductive structures. Up to that point, those structures could develop into either female or male genitalia.
By seven or eight weeks of gestation, the gonads are distinguishable as testes or ovaries.
Between the time the child is born and adolescence, testosterone mostly takes a back seat. It's present but mostly waits in the wings.
When testosterone finally returns to center stage, though, it certainly makes its presence felt.
At this point, the brain signals the pituitary gland to instruct the testicles to produce more testosterone a 30-fold increase by some estimates. The testicles and penis begin to grow larger, the voice changes, facial hair and larger muscles begin to emerge and, critically, the testicles begin producing sperm.
Knowing all of this, it's perhaps not too surprising that men who are considering testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) sometimes think taking additional testosterone, or exogenous testosterone, might make them more fertile.
Not true.
"When people take testosterone from the outside, as testosterone replacement therapy, the body sees it as a signal that, 'OK, we're good, we can stop signaling to the testicles,'" said Amy Pearlman, M.D., a men's health specialist and co-founder of Prime Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. "So the testicles stop producing testosterone. It can also shut down the signal to the testicles for spermatogenesis; that's the production of sperm."
Pearlman wants people to know that exogenous testosterone can impact most people's ability to have a child. At the very least, it can affect sperm production. Men can father children while they're on testosterone, but it can make the process more difficult.
That's not to say TRT is a no-go for anyone who might want to start a family someday. Men's health specialists such as Pearlman have various strategies to counteract the potential effects of TRT on fertility. For instance, treatments that use human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and other hormonal therapies can stimulate spermatogenesis.
Many people simply bank sperm before starting TRT, just in case.
It's clear that testosterone is a vital component of male sexual functions. What might be more difficult to break down is exactly where the hormone fits in among the array of systems and processes that all have to function correctly for sex to work like it's designed to work.
"Testosterone is not necessarily a treatment for erectile dysfunction [ED], but it can help people respond better to other therapies," Pearlman said. "I see that all the time in my patients. They come in with ED and I put them on testosterone and the erections improve. We haven't had the studies that exactly show that, but the anecdotal experience with so many patients is it really helps."
The idea is improved testosterone levels alone may not improve ED, but without good testosterone levels, other components also might not work.
"We know in terms of testosterone production's impact on erectile function that it's really difficult for someone with low testosterone to get good erections," Pearlman said. "That's where we see if someone used to respond to Viagra or Cialis and they no longer respond. And if you check their testosterone and it's low, then optimizing their hormones can make them better responders to the pills."
The most recent American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines recommend physicians check men coming in with ED for testosterone for that reason.
Pearlman is quick to point out that getting an erection is only one piece of the sexual puzzle. Testosterone has effects on all kinds of systems and functions.
"[It's] the whole sexual experience: We often focus only on the erections, but hormones are really important for orgasm and ejaculation and the whole sense of pleasure," she said.
In learning about how testosterone works, we can't forget the yin to testosterone's yang: estrogen. Everyone's body produces both hormones. Sexual health and many other aspects of health depend on our body's ability or our doctor's ability to carefully calibrate and regulate the balance between the two.
"It's important to note that it's not just 'the male hormone' or 'the female hormone,'" Pearlman said. "I think it's important to emphasize the importance of the hormone that we identify with the other gender or sex. And that's important for cisgender people as well as transgender people, that ratio of testosterone to estrogen."
If you go on TRT, it can prompt your body to convert more testosterone into estrogen, and that can wreak havoc on not only your sexual function but all manner of things.
"If someone's estrogen is too low or too high in the setting of someone being on testosterone, that alone can cause issues," Pearlman said. "When guys come in and I put them on testosterone and they're not feeling optimized or they have issues with ED or mood or libido, I always check their estrogen, because that's the downstream effect of being on testosterone. Some of their testosterone will get converted into estrogen, so oftentimes I'm targeting the estrogen in these guys over the testosterone."
Perhaps the main point to understand is that while testosterone is a critical piece of the male sexual health puzzle, haphazardly boosting your testosterone levels is not a clear path to better sexual function. It may actively do harm. Potentially, TRT can harm fertility.
Anyone who has questions about their testosterone levels should not hesitate to schedule a visit with a men's health specialist to talk about their symptoms and get a blood workup. At the same time, it's useful to know that wild internet claims about how TRT can instantly give you hard-ons like a porn star or help you start popping out babies are likely to disappoint.

Many think of testosterone as just a male sex hormone, but it is very important for women, too.
It plays a part in maintaining a womans libido and energy levels, improves mood, sleep and keeping bones healthy. In women, testosterone is produced in the ovaries and adrenal glands (whereas in men it is produced in the testes).
"Levels peak in women in their mid-20s and start to decline from the 30s onwards," says Dr Haitham Hamoda, a consultant gynaecologist and menopause lead at Kings College Hospital, London, and immediate past chair of the British Menopause Society.
"However, unless a woman is experiencing symptoms of low sex drive that doesnt improve with oestrogen treatment, we wouldnt check her testosterone levels."
There is no "normal" testosterone level for women, but in general they "have about a tenth of the levels of testosterone that men have", explains Dr Hamoda.
It can cause a low sex drive in some women and this is a common symptom of the menopause.
However, not all menopausal women experience this and low sex drive can be linked to other factors including illness, medication and relationship problems.
Testosterone is a treatment approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence for women with low libido if HRT doesnt alleviate the problem.
"For a significant proportion of women going through the menopause, testosterone does have a beneficial effect on sex drive," says Dr Hamoda.
"However, we dont yet know whether testosterone also has a beneficial effect on energy levels, mood, sleep and bone health and it is not approved to treat these problems. Further research is needed to evaluate this."
There is currently no licensed testosterone product specifically for women in the UK. There are three testosterone gels licensed for men Tostran, Testim and Testogel which are rubbed onto the skin daily. These can be prescribed to women with low libido both on the NHS and privately supervised by a specialist and prescribed by a GP.
However, access to the treatment can be sketchy because some NHS GPs are uncomfortable or reluctant to prescribe it, possibly because it is licensed for men, or they are restricted by local prescribing guidelines.
"Some NHS GPs will prescribe it only once a specialist doctor has decided it is the right treatment for the woman," says Dr Hamoda.
"A testosterone patch for women would be a welcome addition in the UK. Having a preparation manufactured specifically for them would be more reassuring."
Its not known how many women are currently taking testosterone therapy in the UK.
IS IT AVAILABLE PRIVATELY, AND WHATS THE COST?
Testosterone gel is available on the NHS and privately at a cost of around 80 for a six-month supply. To get it privately you will need to pay for a consultation with a private doctor who may carry out a blood test to check your testosterone levels.
CAN MEN TAKE THE SAME TREATMENT?
Yes, the three testosterone gels currently available for women in this country are manufactured for use by men. This can make it hard for women to estimate the dose they need (women will need to take a small proportion of a sachet, for example, as advised by their doctor).
"Doses are normally around 5mg a day for women 10 times lower than the typical 50mg a day for men," according to Dr Hamoda.
Testosterone deficiency in men is coined by some as the "male menopause" but is a controversial issue, with some experts saying it is a significant problem, while others question its existence.
Yet Superdrug Online Doctor, for example, has seen a consistent increase in demand for its male testosterone test-and-treat service which was launched in 2019. Over the past 12 months, there has been a 190 per cent increase in orders for this service.
The new patch will do the same job as the gels currently available. However, because it is formulated for women it will take the guess work and worry out of how much gel to apply.
"The patch is also a convenient way to receive testosterone, like oestrogen patches which are commonly used in HRT," says Dr Hamoda.
No, another testosterone patch for women called Intrinsa was developed and made available on the NHS in 2007.
However, this was withdrawn around 10 years ago for commercial reasons. In the US it was never approved due to inadequate data.
A new female testosterone cream, AndroFeme, has been licensed recently in Australia, but is currently not approved in the UK, although it can be imported for private use under a special licence from the medicines regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA).
The new testosterone patch for women suffering "low libido and reduced zest for life due to the menopause" is being developed by a company associated with the University of Warwick. David Haddleton, a professor of chemistry who is leading the research, says trials of the new patch will start in the autumn (2023).
He said: "The work were doing isnt just theoretical, but instead aimed at a problem women are facing, which can drastically affect their everyday lives and job.
"This could deliver a product that is much needed and is just not available." However, even if the trials are successful, it is likely to be several more years before the patches are widely available.
"Overall, testosterone treatment is very safe and side-effects in women are uncommon," says Dr Hamoda.
"However, as with all androgen (male sex hormone) treatments there are potential side-effects including acne, excess hair growth and hair thinning but these tend to occur when taking higher doses of testosterone.
"You would have to take a lot over a long period of time to experience these. Taking just above the recommended dose is unlikely to cause any problems."
