The members of the Recreation Board are once again turning their attention to the issue of how to create a recreational center on the island for adults. The current focus of the group is almost entirely youth-oriented.
The discussion came up at the Recreation Boards meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Near the end of the meeting, member Colleen Ernst said, We have no physical activities during the winter?
It was mentioned that there are some, including Pickle Ball at the school gym on Sundays, yoga classes and the like.
What can we do? asked Ernst.
Its a constant problem, said Board Chair Chris Willi.
Willi said that the idea of a community center had been kicking around for years, and for one reason or another it never has been completed. He said any new project would take at least five years before that kind of recreation space could be built.
As a board, can we start doing some of those things? Start raising money? asked Ernst. We have how many bars open, but we cant have a space to exercise?
Willi said the process would have to be started methodically such as identifying town-owned properties that could be used, or not and then getting on an upcoming Town Council agenda to get the ball rolling.
Its all about location, finding a location, said Sniffen.
The Recreation Board has also started a toddler swimming program, and is looking for additional participants. The swimming classes will take place on Mondays at the YMCA in Peace Dale. The group is looking for about six more participants, for a total of 12. Parents have to be present, said Sniffen, and Recreation Department Assistant Cindy Lemon said that parents are actually not allowed in the water with their children. Anyone interested in enrolling their child can call the Recreation Department at (401) 466-3223 or email at recreation@new-shoreham.com.
The tennis courts at Ball OBrien Park may look a little more colorful if the proposal for a public art installation goes through. Sniffen said he was approached by island resident Sue Brown Black about the possibility of a New York City-based artist coming to the islandand doing an installation with the kids.
Sniffen said the park is in the Historic District, which may pose some restrictions about what could be done. He also said that political statements or inappropriate images wold not be allowed. The board members would also see and approve the artwork before it is installed. Is there an expense to it? asked Recreation Board member Gail Heinz.
Not to us, said Sniffen.I like everything to do with public art. I think its fantastic, especially when it involves kids. I think its a great thing and something the Rec Department should get behind.
I think its a good idea, said Willi.
The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 8:15 a.m.

1. What is your age, title
Age 29, Sales & Member Engagement Director, Patchogue Family YMCA
2. How did you become a triathlete? How long have you been doing this?
I started my endurance adventure as a highly competitive youth swimmer. I decided to start running to strengthen my endurance. I found incredible personal and team-based fulfillment with both sports. This led to a coach approaching me about a local triathlon. At 13 years old, I competed in my first triathlon. This endeavor would positively affect the rest of my life. I am now 29 years old and have competed in triathlons for sixteen years with well over hundred races under my belt.
3. What are your top 5 tips for training for a triathlon? Through many years of competition, I have been able to compile five triathlon-training tips that can be useful for both beginners and seasoned athletes.
Take your time and enjoy the experience. Over the years, I have witnessed countless individuals going too far, too fast who end up injured and out of the sport. It is important to understand that there are different distance triathlons: Sprint, Olympic, Half Ironman, and Ironman. Each doubles in length to the next. You dont need to start with an Ironman to be considered a triathlete. I suggest getting into the sport with a local indoor triathlon and moving up from there. Putting together all three disciplines, (Swimming, Biking and Running) is incredibly fulfilling when you take the time to embrace the process
A well-balanced training plan is the best approach for healthy progression. When putting together a plan, it is beneficial to have proper mixture of fast-paced intervals, low and slow distance, and tempo work within each discipline. This is an individualized process that should be geared towards your specific fitness goals.
Find a local triathlon group or experienced training partner to help guide your journey. Even though this is an individual sport, reaching out to those with experience will not only be helpful but also make the entire experience more enjoyable. There are a plethora of Long Island-based triathlon teams, coaches and originations. The best place to look for these resources are the local YMCAs. They are the choice training facilities for many seasoned endurance athletes.
Goal setting is the foundation to a successful triathlon experience. Realistic yet challenging training/racing goals is key to progression without getting burnt out. Pick an important event and sign up early enough that it becomes a reward for all your hard work. As per Tip #3, it is helpful to get involved but make sure your goals are personalized to your specific situation and not anyone elses.
With most nonprofessional triathletes, time to train becomes the largest hurdle. Whether its work, family or other commitments, time feels like its against us. A great way to combat this is through intensive-based interval training. Utilizing a responsible amount of this type of effort will give the best benefit to time ratio. These workouts consist of relatively short intervals at a moderate-to-hard effort followed by rest at a much easier effort. This can be done within all three disciplines and should be a challenge if done properly.
4. What are the common mistakes people make while training?
Feeling the need to add more training volume to improve. An over-trained athlete that consistently goes above their ability is likely to get injured, burnt out and or mentally/physically drained. This, in many cases, will lead to an individual leaving the sport. I feel the approach of quality over quantity gives a better probability of success and longevity within the sport.
5. How does the staff at the YMCA of Long Island help prevent these mistakes?
YMCA staff can offer safe, high-quality programs that are designed to build individuals up without breaking them down. Instructors will notice the signs of an athlete going above their means and should make appropriate adjustments on an individual basis.
6. What are realistic goals to set for yourself while training
A few realistic goals:
7. What advice would you give to someone looking to get started as a triathlete?
As mentioned in Tip #1, take it slow and build up your experience, technique and overall knowledge of the sport. Ive been in this sport for sixteen years and have been lucky enough to win over thirty races but Ive only done one ironman. I respect and understand the commitment it takes to successfully compete in that long of an event. This mentality has kept me happy and healthy all these years.
8. How does the YMCA of Long Island help someone achieve their triathlon goal(s)? The Y offers strength-training classes and access to countless amenities such as a fitness center and pool in one facility to train, coaches, access to personal trainers, as well as nutrition guidance.
In my opinion, the YMCAs across Long Island are the centerpiece of the thriving triathlon training community. This is mostly due to our beautiful facilities that are a one-stop shop for anyone looking to train all three disciplines at the same location. This unique environment brings both beginners and seasoned veterans together in one place to learn from each other. It is not just a training ground, but a tight knit community.

Trump’s fitness to stand trial questioned by professionals: Serious signs of deterioration – Salon

President Donald Trump's comments about Thomas Edison sparked concerns about his mental health among attorneys, former government officialsand a Yale University psychiatrist.
Trump on Wednesday compared Tesla founder Elon Musk to inventor Thomas Edison in an interview with CNBC.
"He's one of our great geniuses, and we have to protect our genius," Trump said. "You know, we have to protect Thomas Edison, and we have to protect all of these people that came up with originally the light bulb, and the wheel and all of these things. And he's one of our very smart people, and we want to cherish those people."
"I spoke to him very recently, and he's also doing the rockets. He likes rockets. And he does good at rockets, too, by the way. I never saw where the engines come down with no wings, no anythingand they're landing. I said, 'I've never seen that before,'" the presidentadded.
Maya Wiley, a former attorney for the ACLU and NAACP, told MSNBC's Brian Williamson Wednesday that she found Trump's "both sad and disturbing."
"I do have to wonder what that means for him cognitively and whether or not something is going on," she said. "I had a mother who had Alzheimer's and passed away, and it's not funny. We should be very concerned about his health."
"You're not the first person to say that," Williams replied.
"To speak about Thomas Edison as if he is still alive is simply something that is scary," Wiley aid.
"We have to point out this is someone's client," Williams said. "At the same time as he made those comments, he's being actively defended in a de facto public court of law."
Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance agreed that "everything about this is extremely disturbing."
"He is on trial for engaging in misconduct At the same time, as Maya points out, he constantly engages in conduct that calls into question his fitness, if not his mental and physical condition," she said. "And this, I think, is a pressing concern that Congress needs to take seriously, because the Cabinet, which would have some authority under the 25th Amendment to do something about it, apparently doesn't."
Yale psychiatry professor Bandy X. Lee, the founder of the World Mental Health Coalition, agreed with the attorneys' assessment in an interview with Salon.
"We must consider Donald Trump's mental compromise as being threefold: emotional, cognitiveand neurological including potential substance misuse," Lee said. "While it is not possible to come to a diagnosis from a distance, it is very possible to distinguish many things, such as abnormal symptoms and signswhether these are patterns of strategic presentation or stereotypical disease over time, trends of declineand dangerousness."
Lee said Trump's comments about Edison show a "marked worsening" of Trump's mental state.
"He is less able to stay with a topic, to find complex words, to form complete sentences. And the content of his words is becoming more impoverished, if not nonsensical," Lee said. "Connecting the present to a distant past or to history is common in progressive dementia, and while dementia is still not a diagnosis we can make without detailed medical records, these are serious signs of deterioration we should not ignore."
"Whatever the source of the loose association, he speaks of Thomas Edison as if he were a contemporary of Elon Musk that we should equally protect. And he mentions light bulbs and the wheel as if they were recent inventions like the electric car," she continued."His impairment should be very clear to everyone, and I have stated that it is inhumane, either for him or for ourselves, to continue to prop up this man as being normal."
"As he declines cognitively, his other symptoms are likely to worsen, as well," Lee added. "He mentions at the end, 'We help him, so he has to help us,' as if he were keeping Mr. Musk beholden lest he betray him or leave him without protection what someone is likely to say when he is paranoid."
Lee was joined by hundreds of psychiatrists from around the country in calling on Congressto convene a panel of mental health professionals to evaluate Trump's mental state. Lee wrote a joint op-edearlier this week with former White House ethics chief Richard Painter warning that Trump should not be tried by the Senate, because he "may not be mentally competent."
"We argued that the Senate trial should not go forward as long as he has raised, through multiple recent comments, doubts about his competence," Lee told Salon. "In any court of law, if questions about the defendant's competence arise, the trial cannot proceed, since the law requires that only those who are competent to stand trial be tried."

DUBLIN, Jan. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The "Connected Wearable Device Market in Healthcare, Wellness, and Fitness by Device Type, Use Case, and Application 2020 - 2025" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.
This report evaluates the current state of the wearable technology ecosystem including devices and applications within the medical, wellness, and fitness markets. The report addresses key challenges, market players, solutions, and the future of wearables in healthcare.
The report also provides an outlook for the future of wearable devices in medical, wellness, and fitness with forecasts for the period 2020-2025. This includes application analysis and forecasts by physiological activity and the role of wearables in elder care and assisted living.
Key Highlights
There is a great demand in the healthcare industry for remote monitoring and diagnostics. Driving factors include healthcare cost inflation coupled with a rapidly aging global population within the developed countries. For example, 20 percent of United States residents are projected to be age 65 or older by 2030.
Wearable devices for medical, wellness and fitness purposes are many and varied, consisting of various form factors depending on the purpose and placement of the human body. Wearable devices can be worn and/or integrated into apparel to become less intrusive. Sensors (biomechanical, motion, etc.) may be placed at specific parts of the body to communicate with an overall Body Area Network system.
Improving supply factors include improvements in electronics miniaturization and innovation leading to reduced device cost. R&D in wearable healthcare devices is leading to enhanced functionality, form factor improvements, and frictionless integration with the Internet of Things (IoT) systems and solutions.
Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication enables wearable healthcare devices to communicate autonomously with monitoring systems for both real-time decision making and data gathering for future analysis. Secure M2M enabled data transport and IoT system connectivity facilitates the integration of healthcare info with data analytics solutions.
One of the core reasons for wearables in healthcare is to transmit information for medical support from a licensed professional. However, there is also a market for quantified self in healthcare, which refers to the incorporation of technology into data acquisition on aspects of a person's daily life. This enables a Do it Yourself (DIY) tool for consumers to self-monitor and self-report important wellness items such as blood pressure. The alternative is to allow medical data to transmit to a trusted entity.
Advanced healthcare data management solutions, supported by artificial intelligence, are capable of processing massive amounts of healthcare information, including unstructured data acquired from many different sources and contexts. One of the challenges for the healthcare industry is tying these systems into healthcare devices in a manner in which data is leveraged while simultaneously preserving device security and end-user privacy.

WATSON, LA (NBC33/FOX 44)
Johnny's Superette has been in business for 35 years in Watson. This store, many say, is not just a store or even a gathering place, but a piece of the fabric that makes Watson home.
On December 12, 2019 at exactly 8:50 p.m., an armed gunman forced two employees into the bathroom, fired a shot into the floor, and robbed the place.
As the above exclusive surveillance video shows, one of those employees, despite her fear, had the presence of mind to grab her phone and run back to the bathroom. That's where she called 911.
"She was too brave," store owner Johnny Lockhart told us. "My deal here is protect yourself. Do not put your life between the the store and that, because it's not worth it."
Lockhart says he's very thankful to that employee, the community, and to the Livingston Parish Sheriff's office.
Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard announced the arrests of the alleged gunman and getaway driver just last week. Lockhart was elated, saying"The Sheriff's Office showed their professionalism in how fast they solved this case and how they treated the people involved."
As it turned out, the alleged gunman was a former employee of Johnny's Superette. Lockhart says the young man worked as a stock boy for him this past Summer. "It hurts your feelings to know that somebody would do that," Lockhart said of his former employee.

The key to speeding up weight loss using brown fat is to expose the body to cold temperatures, which can activate brown fat cells, according to a study conducted by National Institutes of Health researchers and published in the journal Diabetes.
Cold temperatures work to charge your brown fat, which stabilizes your metabolism, increase MSP (Metabolic SetPoint) and help lose weight. Metabolic SetPoint is a level when the brain starts to slow down your metabolic activity, which can hamper fat loss. Brown fat, unlike white fat, has extremely low energy expenditure unless it is stimulated by external factors.
When brown fat is supercharged, it improves MSP and makes your body a fat-burning furnace and make you capable of burning additional calories along the way. Cold temperatures also expose the brain to be stimulated, dole out dopamine and function better and boost activity at the cellular level.

Highlights
Salads are of many kinds. Thanks to the surge of salad bars and cafe, people now understand just how versatile salad can be; that it need not be all about lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber. Salads can be as fun as you want them to be. One of the best ways to make salad is to throw in all the seasonal goodness in it. With winters upon us, we are seeing a plethora of fruits and vegetables in our kitchen pantry. The seasonal cameos by these fruits and veggies are special, which is why we try to make most of out of them while they are around. If you are not in a mood to cook anything elaborate, you can incorporate them in a bright and peppy salad; like this carrot and orange salad that has winter written all over it!

If you have been trying to lose weight, you know there is no magic spell which could give you a slimmer waistline overnight. You have to revamp your diet, and eating seasonal produce may amp up your weight-loss journey. Seasonal foods help fortify you with a range of antioxidants and most of these foods are a treasure of vital vitamins and minerals too. Carrot and orange are two winter staples we have our hearts set on, right now.
Carrots are packed with lutein and vitamin A, which makes them incredible for eyes. They also contain beauty mineral silica that may help boost your skin health. Oranges too are packed with vitamin C; the potent antioxidant helps fight free radical activity. Free radical activity leads to ageing and dull skin.

Both carrot and orange are packed with dietary fibre. Fibre helps induce feeling of satiety. If you feel full, chances of binging and mindless eating reduces to a great extent. Thus, if you eat more mindfully, and in regulated portions, you are quite likely to lose weight faster. Additionally, carrot and orange are also super low in calories. Less number of calories coupled with high nutrition, make them an ideal addition to a weight loss diet.
