Experts often recommend cutting down on starchy foods for people who are trying to lose weight or who have diabetes. But recent research has found that not all starch is created equal.
Resistant starch, for example, is a type of starch that breaks down slowly like fiber and can have positive health effects. So if you are looking to lose weight and boost your digestive health, you don't necessarily need to cut carbs altogether. Instead, consider replacing some of the more simple starches with resistant starches in your diet.
All starches are a type of carbohydrate that breaks down into a form of sugar called glucose during digestion.
Now, some starch like the kind in a pile of steaming mashed potatoes breaks down quickly. On the one hand, this gives your body a nice boost in energy, but if glucose is absorbed into your bloodstream too rapidly, too often, then over time it can cause health problems such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.
That's where resistant starches can help. They get their name from how they resist digestion.
"Resistant starch is digested in the same way as other starch, just more slowly," says Joshua Lambert, a food science professor at Penn State University.
Your body digests these starches more slowly because of their molecular structure. Resistant starches exist naturally in foods like grains, beans, and legumes. But they can also form in foods like pasta and potatoes by cooking and then letting them cool.
For example, when you cook a starchy food like pasta, the starch molecules relax and spread further apart, making the food easier to break down and digest, which can cause a spike in blood sugar.
But just as cooking causes the starch molecules to relax, this same process reverses as the food cools, basically snapping back into place like a stretched rubber band that's been released. The starch molecules pack together more densely and become harder to break down, slowing the digestion process and maintaining more stable blood sugar levels.
If you are disappointed by the idea of having to eat cold pasta, there may be an added bonus. According to a small, preliminary experiment by the BBC team who runs "Trust Me, I'm A Doctor" if you reheat your pasta after letting it cool, the starches become even more resistant to digestion. Another 2016 study in the journal Food Chemistry found that chilled potatoes had more resistant starch than reheated potatoes, though both had more than hot potatoes.
There are several different types of resistant starches that can show up in food:
If you are on a diet, replacing simple starches with resistant starches may help you lose weight. The slower digestion process can make you feel more full, which may curb unnecessary snacking. Moreover, when you eat resistant starch, your body won't absorb as many calories as it normally would from starchy food.
Because resistant starch can pass through your entire digestive tract without breaking down, it can reach your large intestine or colon largely intact. When this happens, the starch will ferment instead of being converted to glucose. This fermentation process provides food for the good bacteria in your intestines that help with digestion. "This promotes colon health," Lambert says.
In fact, experts are in the early stages of investigating whether resistant starches could play a role in preventing colon cancer.
Though resistant starches offer some health benefits, you don't have to focus on them exclusively. For a healthy person, eating other forms of carbohydrates, such as fruit, can provide a helpful energy boost to the body.
Lambert says that while resistant starch is an important part of the diet, it is not a cure-all. "Like anything else, it is important to keep it in the context of a healthy diet. Lots of extra resistant starch isn't going to make up for an unhealthy overall diet."

JANUARY usually happens like clockwork: a slew of new self-help books, articles and slimming blogs encourage you to 'be your best self', often by adopting a radical new diet that promises to blitz those spare inches around your waist for good.
The problem is, many crash diets encourage periods of miserable fasting and cutting out sometimes entire good groups overnight, and demonise food to the point where you're whole relationship with eating can be under threat.
According to fitness guru Joe Wicks who has successfully helped thousands of people to lose weight staying on these restrictive diets for a long period of time is often unrealistic and unhealthy. Even if you do lose weight initially, it's not unusual to gain it again (plus even more, in some cases) before the spring comes around.
Thankfully, attitudes around diet culture are changing. A new survey commissioned by recipe box company Gousto (gousto.co.uk) has found two-thirds (68 per cent) of UK adults believe the one-size-fits-all model just doesn't work.
So, how can you shed those excess pounds in a safe and effective way? We asked Wicks to give us some quick tips...
:: Why should people avoid restrictive diets in January?
"It's the time of year now where everyone wants to make changes to their life, whether that's with exercise or food, but the last thing you want to do especially if you're someone who really loves food is to go on a low-calorie diet," says Wicks (33).
"Sure, it will work in the short-term and you'll probably lose weight on the scales, but emotionally it's going to absolutely ruin you. You're going to be so exhausted, you won't enjoy it and it's not going to be a sustainable approach.
"Try to think about a long-term vision, as opposed to a quick crash diet. Incorporate it with exercise and cooking with fresh ingredients at home; you're much more likely to succeed throughout the year."
:: Why do people fail at New Year's diets?
"Because they're awful, aren't they? Dieting is normally all about how little you can eat and how much exercise you can do. When you combine those two things, it effects your sleep, your mood and your energy levels.
"If I could give you one tip, it's to focus on getting yourself moving instead. I always tell people to start with 15-20 minutes a day of exercise at home; this will get your energy levels up and your self-esteem boosted. Exercising is going to have a massive effect on your food choices and your ability to go into the kitchen and cook yourself something healthy.
"Trying to do everything all at once is a bit much," he adds. "Focus on fitness first, and the rest will hopefully follow."
:: What other tips do you have for those looking to lose weight this year?
"Have a look at your portion control. I'm not saying to count calories, but to keep your plate to a healthy size. The good thing about exercise is that it elevates your mental health and your mood so much that you don't want to go and put junk food in your body afterwards.
"Meal prepping is one of the best things you can do too. If you leave the house without food, you're going to grab options on-the-go, which will likely be unhealthy convenience food.
"That's fine to do once or twice a week, but if you're doing it a lot, you're never going to truly know exactly how much you're consuming. The simple act of making some overnight oats for breakfast, or a salad for lunch can make a huge difference over time when it comes to staying lean."
:: What are you favourite ingredients for healthy eating?
"I really think it's great to have chopped tomatoes, coconut milk, curry powder, spices and tins of lentils, pulses, grains and beans in your cupboard. With these key ingredients, you can make really amazing veggie curries, or you could throw some chicken in there for some extra protein. Rice is also a great staple for making quick stir-fries after work.
"There's no magic fat-loss food; it's all about getting a good balance of everything and getting lots of fruits and veg in your diet.
"It's good to be a bit intuitive with it ask yourself what foods make you feel energised and healthy? Don't think you have to jump on to a certain diet because everyone else is doing it."
:: Do you follow a flexitarian diet yourself?
"Yes. I eat a lot of veggie meals and with Gousto, I get four recipe boxes delivered per week that I can make at home. Three of those will be vegetarian and one will be meat-based.
"That's a massive step for me. During the process of researching and writing my veggie cookbook, Veggie Lean in 15 (16.99, Pan Macmillan), I realised that you can get really amazing food as a vegetarian. I'm still not fully committed to going hardcore vegan though."
:: Many people feel like they don't have time to cook healthily, do you think that's untrue?
"I really think you have to remove that time barrier from your mind. We know full well that we can smash a Netflix series in a couple of days or watch our soaps, so we can all find half an hour to exercise or cook well if we prioritise it.
"It doesn't need to be hours in the kitchen either. My whole philosophy with my Lean in 15 series is that you can make a really healthy and nutritious meal in just 15 minutes, and have some leftover for lunch the next day.
"It's that kind of mentality of prepping in advanced and being organised that works in the long-run."

Intermittent fasting is becoming more and more popular. Hugh Jackman's method of choice to get lean for Wolverine, it means significantly cutting calories or abstaining from food altogether for a portion of the day or week, and then cramming all your calories into a much shorter time window.
The best-known intermittent fasting plan is the 5:2 diet, where you eat as you normally would (although hopefully a bit healthier) for five days a week, then scoff no more than 600 calories two days a week.

As well doing both muscle-building and cardio exercises, if you want to lose belly fat its also important to switch up the pace of your workout.

Weight loss is a topic that has been misunderstood for decades. Products and services have been created and sold resulting in a multi-billion dollar per year industry. The marketing for this industry sells individuals on the idea of quick results with promises of Lose 30 pounds in 30 days or Get a six pack with these quick and easy steps. These results are achievable, they say, if you buy their product or service.
Over the past 13 years, I have helped people get out of pain and lose weight. Ive heard all of the excuses and reasons why someone hasnt reached their goal. I can sum up weight loss in one sentence: if you want to change your weight, change your habits.
There is no need to buy anything, and you dont need a guru or a system. If you want to lose weight, first answer this question: what habits do you have that do not serve you? Is it a sweet tooth? Or late-night snacking? Or lack of exercise? Or unhealthy eating?

Second, replace the habits that dont serve you with habits that do serve you. It is not enough to get rid of a habit; you must replace the habit with something new. If you find yourself reaching for cookies too often, take notice of it, and when you feel the urge to reach for a cookie, replace the action with something that better serves you. For example, eat an apple, or pick up your favorite book or drink some water. The possibilities are limitless.
Ive started writing a book called Think and Lose Weight which discusses simple and effective ways to change your habits over time to give you a different result. Weight loss is simply the opposite of weight gain. Weight gain occurs slowly over time due to our habits, and weight loss can occur slowly over time due to our habits, too.

How to lose weight may well be an aim for a lot of people in January, especially after a period of indulgence, and there are certainly plenty of diets and diet plans to choose from to stimulate weight loss. During tonights instalment of Lose Weight and Get Fit with Tom Kerridge, Tom and his multiple volunteers take on the dreaded first weigh-in to see how they got on following Toms diet and exercise plan.
It's the first full week of the challenge and Tom is back in Gloucester, the city where he grew up, to exercise and cook alongside his diet and fitness gang.
Window cleaning brothers-in-law Dan, 37 and Alex, 34 volunteered for the challenge because of health concerns and a normal day sees them tucking into a big, calorific breakfast and grabbing fast food between jobs.
Dan commented: I wanted to lose weight and be healthier for my kids, I want to be able to have a run around in the park with my boy, too many times I go Im too tired, I cant do this, I cant do that.
Most days the mens' day begins with a trip to a drive-through, starting their day with a greasy and unhealthy breakfast.

I think the reason we have naughty breakfasts is that we enjoy the rubbish food, it tastes nice explained Alex.
Accessible and cheap, justified Dan.
Typically their day wouldnt have many exercises incorporated into it, but since joining the challenge the pair had made a promise to change.
What winter dieters miss most is comfort food, Tom explained. A small salad just doesnt cut it when its freezing cold and dieters really fancy a fry-up or a nice curry.

As team chef, Tom wants to get his team off to a good start on calorie counting - and familiar, comforting dishes is the way to go.
Among his lower-calorie recipes this week are fish fingers with sweet potato wedges, red pepper, and spinach pasta bake and a bean stew with sausages, which he describes as one of the best inventions ever probably just behind the wheel.
Personal trainer, Adam, is working closely with Tom and his weight loss gang, and has created a simple stamina and strength workout that slimmers can follow at home.
Adams workout takes about 45minutes. Its half aerobics exercises for the heart and half resistance movements for strength, said Tom.
You dont have to do it all in one go. You can do half the exercises in the morning and half in the evening, added Tom.
So, how did they get on at the first-weigh in?
At the beginning of the weight loss challenge, both Alex and Dan were concerned with their weight and unhealthy eating habits.
But since following the diet and exercise plan, constructed by Tom Kerridge, the brothers-in-law have lost 17 pounds between them, thats 4kg each in just a week.
How did they manage to lose weight so quickly?
Tom revealed that as well as following the diet and fitness plan, the pair have ditched their morning drive through in favour of much healthier breakfast choices, which set them up for the rest of their day.
You dont have to ditch comfort food to count calories, but making small changes to your every day routine can improve your health before you know it, said Tom.
How did Tom Kerridge lose weight originally?
Over the last five years, Tom has gone through an incredible weight loss transformation and he revealed he lost 12 stone using a simple happy diet plan to shed the weight. What was the diet?

According to BBC Good Food, the dopamine diet encourages slimmers to lose weight, while simultaneously boosting mood too. It is often referred to as the Tom Kerridge diet, as he boosted the popularity of the diet, in recent years.
This diet is all about increasing levels of happy hormone dopamine in the brain at the same time as shedding pounds, the website said.
There are multiple versions of the diet, however, all are based around food that is thought to boost dopamine levels in slimmer.
These can include foods such as:
Dairy foods such as milk, cheese, and yogurt
Unprocessed meats such as beef, chicken, and turkey
Omega-3 rich fish such as salmon and mackerel
Eggs
Fruit and vegetables, in particular bananas
Nuts such as almonds and walnuts
Dark chocolate
Most versions of the diet recommend avoiding alcohol, caffeine and processed sugar, while some also recommend cutting out or severely restricting starchy carbohydrates.

LONDON (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he wants to lose weight in 2020, but will not do Veganuary - the popular practice of becoming vegan in January - as it would take too much concentration and mean giving up cheese.
I had thought of it but it requires so much concentration. I do take my hat off to vegans who can handle it, he said during an interview with BBC TV having confessed he wanted to lose some pounds in the next year.
You cant eat cheese if youre a vegan. Its just a crime against ... cheese lovers, he added.

1. Swap ice cream for homemade desserts
Ice cream, which is around 300 to 400 calories depending on the type, can be swapped for homemade banana choc-chip cinnamon ice cream, which only has a total of 210 calories.
Simply take a frozen banana, 1/4 cup of full cream milk, one tablespoon of dark chocolate chips, a generous pinch of cinnamon and blend. Another alternative is sorbet, just blend with ice instead of milk. While sorbet has 60% less calories, it's still high in sugar, so not quite as healthy as the homemade version, says Amelia.
Amelia says that carbonated water made in your SodaStream at home has no calories, as long as you dont add any flavoured syrups, but itll give you that fizzy hit.

You can get the same salty crunch of potato chips from chickpeas or fava beans, which only have 183 calories total versus 258 calories per 50g in chips, says Amelia. You can make these at home or buy ready to eat from all major supermarkets.
Get the same sweet hit but for a fraction of the calories by swapping sweets for dried fruit. A Snickers bar contains 241calories, while five dried apricots contains just 63.
You might be tempted to eat a dried fruit and nut trail mix -which is much healthier than the Snickers bar but with nuts added to the fruit trail mix contains very similar calories as the Snickers bar.

Cocktails can be an alcohol, sugar and calorie trap, says Amelia.
An average cocktail contains around 250 to 300 calories, 4 to 6 teaspoons of sugar and 10g alcohol. Mix spirits in soda water instead, making your own soda water in a SodaStream. One nip of vodka or gin with soda water contains 67 calories, a gin and tonic contains 110.

WHAT did you have for breakfast this morning? Did you opt for a slice of sourdough with some mashed avocado and a sprinkling of seeds? Or did you plump for two slices of bacon and a fried egg? Given its mid-January, when most of us are still nobly vowing to eat more healthily or lose weight, Id imagine a fair few of you went for the avocado option, even if youd rather have had the bacon one.
A new book suggests you made the wrong choice. Yes, its January, and yes, its another diet book, but author Graeme Tomlinson also known as @thefitnesschef insists his is different.
Pretty much all the other books out there impose their own methods and their own ways of dieting on people, and thats unnecessary, he says. It can be extreme and lead people down a path of extreme eating. My aim is to empower people by showing them that they already have a diet that can work for them, which can include the foods they enjoy.
The book is called Eat What You Like & Lose Weight For Life. Thats an appealing proposition and, according to Graeme, its not a complicated one. He believes you can forget intermittent fasting, slimming clubs, paleo, alkaline, Atkins, low carb, juicing, 5:2 and any number of weight-loss plans that promise the pounds will fall off. According to him, all you have to do is eat less and/or move more. Yup, thats it no carefully timed meals, no excluding entire food groups, just eating fewer calories than your body needs to do what it does on a daily basis, aka a calorie deficit.
I know, I know! Ive thought for years that all calories are not created equal, that if you starve yourself, your body holds on to the calories you consume and that calorie counting was an outdated way of eating. Not so, says Graeme (pictured below), who insists its actually the only thing that works.
Pretty much every diet people get weight-loss results from is a calorie deficit dressed up as something else, he says. Thats not to say other things arent important or dont have a role to play but the single most important thing you need to know is that to lose weight, you need to have a calorie deficit.
He points out that to be healthy, you probably shouldnt take in all your calories in the form of chocolate bars (although that would work as long as you were still using more calories than you consumed) and that decent amounts of protein and whole foods, which help us feel full, should form the backbone of what we eat.
But the bulk of the book is dedicated to busting myths (for example, you only burn more fat than normal on a keto diet because youre eating more fat; your body doesnt go into starvation mode when you cut your calorie intake) and to brilliant infographics that show just how easy it is to tweak your existing diet so you lose weight. There are also ideas for meals and snacks, as well as suggestions for some easy swaps you can make.
So what makes this man such an expert? After years spent training to be a professional cricketer, Graeme became a personal trainer and nutrition coach, then started to get sick of the misinformation he saw on Instagram. He says he gets his answers the old-fashioned way.
I look at systematic reviews and meta-analysis of data, he says. Anyone can access that information, you just need to be able to interpret it.
He believes strongly that lasting change doesnt happen overnight. Its about working out what your calorie intake currently is (his website fitnesschef.uk has a tool that can help) and then cutting about 15 per cent of those calories out. A few months later, when your weight plateaus, you cut another 15 per cent and so on until you reach your target weight.
The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to do it gradually while not depriving yourself of the foods you enjoy, he says. Yes, it requires some effort and it wont happen magically, but I think theres a way to enjoy food while doing it.
Dont weigh yourself daily. Take progress photos once a week instead and weigh yourself monthly that will give you a better idea of whether or not youre on track
Forget good and bad snacks a crumpet with 5g of butter has fewer calories than a rice cake and 25g of peanut butter; avocado on toast can have more calories than jam on toast
Count calories over a week rather than daily that allows space for real life. If you have a blowout one night, you can cut back on the subsequent days and still be on track
