Meat isn’t always the biggest driver of – Anthropocene – Anthropoce

In global diets, meat is not necessarily the main driver of dietary carbon emissions, finds a new study published in One Earth. Instead, factors like higher sugar and alcohol consumption, and dining out more frequently, could be an unrecognised source of carbon emissions in modern diets.

Looking at Japan, a team of British, Japanese, and Norwegian researchers on the new paper carried out an analysis on the diets of over 60,000 households spread across the country. This intensive survey revealed that families whose diets had the highest carbon footprint werent actually eating more meat than others.

Instead, this higher emissions profile could be explained by greater consumption of fish, vegetables, sweets, alcohol, and eating more frequently at restaurants. These high-impact families spent over three times more on alcohol, twice as much on sugary products, and double the amount on restaurant food, compared to households with a lower carbon footprint, the study found.

In fact, meat consumption was almost identical across the population the researchers studied and interestingly, the differences in emissions couldnt be explained by other social factors such as age, sex, or household income.

What differentiates the highest and lowest [carbon footprint] households is rather spending patterns in unexpected categories: fish, vegetables, alcohol, confectionery, and dining out, the researchers write. While fish and vegetables are lower-emissions alternatives to red meat, they still have a climate impact in high quantities and contribute to emissions from food waste. Sugary products and alcohol come with an associated production emissions cost. And, dining out on restaurant food comes with the added emissions generated by cooking and lighting which is higher than it would be if people made home-cooked meals.

What makes the results more surprising is that in Japan, food consumption is largely in line with broad international dietary recommendations for climate mitigation: the typical Japanese diet tends to include more fish and vegetables, and less red meat. Yet despite this, it doesnt necessarily translate to a low-carbon diet.

That dismantles the notion that simply reducing meat consumption globally as mandated by influential pieces of research like the recent EAT-Lancet Commission report is a clear route to reducing our collective dietary footprint. Instead, the more complicated truth seems to be that meat isnt always the biggest emissions driver in national diets, as is commonly believed and the way we target emissions-reducing policies should take the nuances of global diets into account.

Importantly, the researchers emphasise that these findings dont mean that reducing red meat consumption doesnt count: in fact, the emissions impact of Japanese diets could still be notably cut by eating less red meat. But in addition, they suggest that awareness campaigns about the carbon footprint of different foods, plus a potential carbon tax on luxury products like sweets and alcohol, could uniquely reign in national dietary emissions.

Japan presents a unique dietary case, in many ways so these findings wont necessarily translate to other countries. But it does reveal something crucial in an era of emissions-focused dietary recommendations: that there are important differences in national diets, which mean that global approaches to reducing emissions may not always find their mark.

It would indicate that more care should be given before prescribing national policy based on global data, the researchers write.

How Diet, Exercise, and a Healthy Weight Can Add a Decade to Your Life – Healthline

Wed all like to live a long time in good health.

Now a recently published study has concluded there are lifestyle factors that can increase your odds of reaching an older age without chronic health issues.

Theres been plenty of research on lifestyle choices, such as smoking, physical activity, drinking habits, weight management, and diet, that affect our overall life span and likelihood of experiencing chronic diseases.

However, few studies have looked at how a combination of these factors relate to a long life free of disease.

We wanted to see whether following a healthy diet and exercise can prolong life, not just life expectancy but life expectancy free of chronic diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, Dr. Frank Hu, MPH, a professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Massachusetts and lead study author, told Healthline.

Because were not just looking at life span but also health span, meaning that there are increased years of life free of chronic disease, he said.

Researchers examined data from roughly 73,000 registered female nurses in the United States from the Nurses Health Study and from almost 40,000 male health professionals in the United States from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.

The study participants didnt have cancer, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes when they were enrolled.

Study participants were routinely assessed for new diagnoses and deaths from cancer, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes for more than 20 years. Researchers adjusted for age, ethnic background, family medical history, and other considerations.

The low-risk lifestyle factors used to calculate a healthy lifestyle score included:

Adding these five factors together gave a final low-risk lifestyle score ranging from 0 to 5. A higher score indicated a healthier lifestyle.

Your healthcare provider can help with risk scores that can estimate your risk for death for certain conditions, and evidence-based lifestyle modifications and treatments that can improve conditions, said Dr. Katrina Miller Parrish, the chief quality and information executive at L.A. Care Health Plan.

Keep in mind that a healthy lifestyle with low impact, tolerable physical exercise; a good, well-balanced, colorful diet; hydration; and an appropriate amount of sleep can do wonders to help maintain a positive mental outlook and physical state, Parrish told Healthline.

Years of life free from cancer, heart disease, and diabetes at age 50 was 24 years for women who followed none of the low-risk lifestyle factors.

It was 34 years for women who adopted four or five of the factors.

The life expectancy free of these chronic diseases was 24 years among 50-year-old men who followed no low-risk lifestyle factors.

It was 31 years for men who practiced four or five of these healthy habits.

While hypertension is the number one cause for death throughout the world, many lifestyle changes, such as better diet and exercise, can affect this diagnosis to varying degrees, especially based on regimen and adherence, Parrish said.

Being selective in what you eat is one of the most important lifestyle factors.

Foods that are high in fiber have been studied extensively for the benefits that they provide when it comes to cardiovascular health, including blood pressure regulation, Shelley Wood, MPH, RDN, a clinician at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in California, told Healthline.

Wood explains these foods are plant-based and include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Additionally, legumes, such as beans, lentils, and peas, have been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol level, and high blood pressure.

For those wishing to preserve heart function and health, Wood says theyd benefit from avoiding foods high in sugar, sodium, saturated fat, and refined carbohydrates.

Its especially important to avoid these foods if you have high cholesterol. If youre contemplating eating a food that is high in sugar, salt, or fat, your best bet is to choose something else, she said.

Wood adds that optimizing caloric intake and reaching or maintaining a moderate weight and waist measurement into middle age are the single most important ways to reduce risk for diabetes as well as participating in regular physical activity and avoiding smoking.

According to the study, men who smoked heavily defined as 15 or more cigarettes per day and men and women with obesity (defined as BMI 30 or higher) had the lowest chance of disease-free life expectancy at age 50.

We looked at five lifestyle factors: eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy body weight, not drinking in excess, not smoking, and being physically active. Theyre all important. But for smokers, the most important thing for them to do, of course, is to stop smoking. For people who are obese, its important to lose weight and maintain a healthy body weight, Hu said.

Parrish agrees that not smoking is critically important.

The one single thing anyone who smokes can do is simply quit and reduce risk of disease and death by double digits, which is seen through this study. The effect appears to be greater the longer an ever-smoker remains no longer smoking, Parrish said.

In the first 1 to 10 years after quitting, the risk of heart disease and lung cancer drops, and by 15 years, the risk of each is near that of a nonsmoker, she added.

New research finds there are five lifestyle factors that significantly increase the years you live without experiencing chronic health issues.

Study participants were followed for more than 20 years. Those who followed four or five of the healthy lifestyle choices significantly increased their healthy life span after age 50.

Experts emphasize that the most influential of these are not smoking and maintaining a moderate body weight.

It is a well-established fact that 6-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton is a firm supporter of veganism. So, he uses every opportunity to try and convince his fans to adopt a plant-based diet.

Earlier this year Australia was rocked by catastrophic bushfires and parts of the continent continue to burn. So, he pleaded with his fans to not only aid in Australias efforts to recover, but to save the environment by going vegan.

The Mercedes driver regularly uses his platform to advocate for veganism and stresses on the need to save the environment. In the wake of the devastation, he expressed his sympathy for everyone in Australia and then posted a series of stories about the impact of animal agriculture on the environment.

Grazing livestock is responsible for 54 percent of Australias land use. Urban usage is less than 0.18 percent. Eight percent is conservation, read one post, which credited the Australian Government, Department of Agriculture and Water Resources.

Lewis Hamilton also referred to an Oxford University study that supported the vegan diet and its positive impact. According to it, the diet is supposed to be the best way to reduce a persons negative impact on planet Earth. It affects, not only greenhouse gases, but also global acidification, eutrophication, land use, and water use.

Aside from Hamilton, the likes of Daniel Ricciardo and numerous celebrities pleaded with the publics about Australias plight. They also made sure to donate to various charities to help tackle the fires.

The situation in Australia is so dire that it is believed that more than one billion animals are now feared dead in the blazes. Infernoes have also ravaged more than 2,000 homes, and more than 30,000 square miles, across New South Wales and Victoria killing an estimated 27 people.

In response to the disaster, a fundraiser was set up to help those affected. Reportedly, it raised more than $20 million Australian dollars in 48 hours to help tackle the fire.

It really can be a new you

Two and a half years ago, I was boarding a plane in Detroit to head to Houston, Texas, for a work summit.

I was excited about the travel opportunity, particularly because I was flying with other Hearst colleagues, including the then-managing editor of the Daily News, Tony Lascari.

Tony and I booked seats near the emergency exit, and we were settling into our designated areas when one of the most impactful and embarrassing moments of my life played out before me and every soul on that very large plane.

And all because of a damn seatbelt.

"SHE'S TOO BIG TO SIT IN THAT SEAT," the flight attendant loudly declared. "You can't sit there if you can't buckle your seatbelt. Someone is going to have to trade seats with her. IS THERE ANYONE WILLING TO SWITCH SEATS? SHE CAN'T BUCKLE HER SEATBELT."

The fit-and-trim flight attendant made no attempt to hide her disgust of my weight, and she spared no mercy in humiliating me in front of one of my favorite colleagues and that plane full of strangers.

The passengers, however, were kind. A switch was made with no fuss, and as I found myself in the back of the plane waiting for a seatbelt extender, the young woman I sat next to politely pretended not to notice how I was silently crying in shame and embarrassment.

I got off that plane feeling a mix of emotions: anger at the uncompassionate flight attendant; lingering mortification; and strong resolve to change.

Upon returning to Michigan, I immediately reached out to my family doctor to pursue bariatric surgery, a life-changing process that to date has resulted in me losing 132 pounds.

To be clear, I'm not here to brag about weight loss. In fact, I labored over writing this column because there's a stigma associated with bariatric surgery: That it's the easy way out. But those of us who have been through it -- and our loved ones -- know it's a faster way to lose weight, but it's certainly not the easiest way.

In the end, I've decided to share my story in hopes it might resonate with other readers. If one person reads my account and takes action to improve their health, it will make the embarrassment of discussing my weight struggles worthwhile.

My story is one like so many others: I've struggled with obesity my whole life. I participated in numerous weight loss programs, and consumed just about every weight loss medication imaginable. I'd go through periods where I'd lose 40, 60, 70 pounds, etc., and then I'd gain it back -- plus a little more.

In my early 30s, I just stopped caring about my weight. I told myself beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and I was a big beautiful woman. I conveniently didn't let myself think about all the unhealthy choices I was making, and ignored the toll obesity was taking on my health, including the fact that I couldn't sleep at night without a CPAP machine.

In addition to an insatiable appetite that would only be appeased with plates and plates of food at each meal sitting, I looked at meal time as my prime source of enjoyment. It took me quite some time to realize I had an unhealthy relationship with food.

My doctor referred me to St. Mary's accredited bariatric center, and I spent about a year working with their team in preparation for my surgery, which was done in September 2018.

I had to prove I was serious about weight loss, and the program required substantial education about how my life would change following surgery. This education is crucial because it helps bariatric patients stay on track after their surgery. We all hear nightmare stories about how people had weight loss surgery and then gained back all the weight later in life. Or they lost all their hair following surgery. Or they could never drink alcohol again.

I went into the surgery knowing these were possible outcomes, but I was armed with the knowledge that this surgery is a tool, and it's up to me to make the lifestyle changes to prevent future weight gain. I learned about all the vitamins we should take to stay healthy (and keep our hair). And I was committed to the fact that my health is more important than my desire to drink alcohol.

Probably the biggest challenge for me was having to give up caffeine leading up to surgery. To this day, I'm allowed just 8 ounces of black coffee each day (though I've found that combining protein shakes with decaf coffee is not only a delicious drink, but it gives me the same amount of energy that I used to get from caffeinated coffee).

Like most anything, it's a journey, one that's taken me down many, many paths to realize that food is solely a fuel for my body. True, it's delicious, but every meal doesn't have to be a source of joy.

Though clich, there is no better time to consider improving your health. It's a new year -- and it really can be a new you.

Get your 2020 fitness resolutions right – The Crag and Canyon

You dont have to search hard to find a plethora of 2020 resolution lists promising to remedy the ills of seasonal overindulgence.Before guilt and festive weight gain spur you to resolutions that wont make it past the first weekend of the new year, consider a dose of common sense to guide your efforts.

While visiting family in Ontario over the holidays I managed a few workouts at a local gym. As I exercised, I watched a trainer guide a nervous beginner through a series of complicated moves. Like most beginners, confusion and intimidation will ultimately crush New Years fitness resolutions.

According to Pinterest, recent searches for simple weight training exercises increased by 1423 per cent. Frustrated by a lack of engagement, information and results, many exercisers are turning to the comfort of home exercise and online training.

Recommended resolution: Workout at home. Affordable exercise equipment and online training has made home workouts a reasonable and effective alternative to congested, intimidating gyms.

This one continues to baffle me. From gut-busting HIIT classes to nap pods, popular industry trends typically focus on extremes while ignoring the ever-expanding middle. People like to nibble at the edges of problems instead of meeting them head-on like choosing an ankle tattoo over exercise to address an aging physique.

With most North Americans firmly entrenched in the overweight or obese categories, it only makes sense that we focus on middle of the road health strategies.

Extreme workouts only appeal to the extreme exerciser while naps, meditation and stretching wont help you lose weight or build muscle.

Recommended resolution: Ignore the bells and whistles. Boring works! Embrace simple but progressive resistance exercise coupled with basic healthy eating regimens. Avoid overly optimistic promises. Find an expert you trust to distill exercise research.

If you havent already done so, take a look at The Game Changers, or one of many plant-friendly documentaries. Pounding your chest like a gorilla and demanding a side of beef at your local steakhouse is losing ground to artery de-clogging plant-based alternatives. By the way, gorillas are Herbivores.

Recommended resolution: Patience! Making heart-healthy veggie choices is less about taste (theres a ton of great recipes out there) and more about relearning how to prepare tasty food.

Signs the vegan apocalypse is upon us: 1. Costco now sells tofu 2. The new Canadian Food Guide stresses plant-based eating while downplaying meat and dairy 3. Fast food chains have figured out how to ruin a perfectly good plant.

I hear variations of these misinformed statements all the time: My (overweight, diabetic) friend said that plant-based diets are bunk; Im trying to cut carbs; Only meat provides you with all of the necessary nutrients; HIIT classes are the best way to build muscle and lose weight.

The public has become totally confused by slick marketing and thirdhand myths, rumors and pseudoscience. There are way too many experts out there muddying the water few with qualifications, many with personal agendas.

Recommended resolution: Make logical, evidence-based decisions. Consider the advice of experienced medical doctors who specialize in heart health, obesity & nutrition research. Discount studies sponsored by the meat or dairy industry, podcasters, authors with irrelevant qualifications, YouTube stars, social media influencers, chiropractors/personal trainers/nutritionists/dietitians, some guy down the street, your dog funny, people mock dogs for eating food that can kill them hmm.

If you have the time and the patience, check out the new book, How Not to Diet by Dr. Michael Greger. According to Dr. Greger, the fat that most adversely affects your health is the easiest to lose. The risk of disease drops immediately with minor changes in body fat (only 3% weight loss improves blood sugar and triglyceride levels; 5% loss improves blood pressure and cholesterol and may cut the risk of developing diabetes by half).

Finally, keep it simple. The more complicated your resolution, the more there is to mess up.

Welcome to 2020, where working out means staying in.

Exercising at home hasnt been this cool since Jane Fonda and her leotards, but so much has changed since the leg-warmered 1980s. The Internet has made it so we can livestream barre classes from Hollywood, get yelled at by personal trainers via apps and pedal for our lives on Peloton bikes all from the blessed comfort of our own homes.

According to people who study such things, the home-based fitness market is going to blow up in 2020. Everyone seems to agree that virtual on-demand classes and live at-home workout experiences are most definitely having a very sweaty moment, and its not just because of the convenience, typically lower cost and always-perfect indoor weather.

There are many reasons why the modern-day exerciser would eschew the gym. Maybe were just beginning a workout and fear the judgment of others. Maybe were uncomfortable with our bodies and fear the judgment of others. Or maybe were socially-averse introverts and simply being in the presence of the judgment of others makes us break out in a cold sweat.

Many people are intimidated to go to a class for many reasons, said Ashton August, co-founder of Denver-based on-demand yoga site, YogiApproved.com. (Online workout class) takes that whole social aspect out of it. You still get that person-to-person sense of connection, and you still feel like youre a part of it.

Technology has changed everything over the past few decades, including how we get fit at home. Weve come a long way from popping a tape in the VCR or hopping onto our Bowflex. On-demand routines are available to us via YouTube, apps, blogs, websites and streaming services. They span every genre, price point and intensity level, from gentle walking at home to make-you-wanna-vomit bootcamp classes.

Local fitness experts are getting in on the online action, too. August films the classes for YogiApproved in Denver before posting them to the $10-a-month subscription site for worldwide consumption. She and her partner, Tyler Strauss, got started by posting yoga videos to YouTube back in 2015. They were pleasantly surprised by how many views they got, and so they started the on-demand video component of YogiApproved.

We realized how much traction the videos were getting. People were commenting about how much they were helping, and we thought it was the perfect opportunity to bring yoga to more people, August said.

Denver-based Betty Rocker whose real name is Bree Argetsinger was an early adapter of using social media to promote fitness, posting her first exercise video back in 2011. Her workouts are almost always filmed at her house often using a couch, stairs or ottoman as fitness props and its that accessibility and positive attitude (youll hear her say flawesome a lot) thats gotten 2.5 million people to do her 30-day #makefatcry challenge.

My whole mantra is all or something, not all or nothing. We want to create solutions for people to take action, instead of feeling like a failure for not doing it all. Thats why at-home options are so key. You dont have to go to the gym and work out for an hour to get a great workout in You could be home working out in your pajamas for 15 minutes a day and making more of an impact than at the gym you go to twice a month in your fancy workout clothes, Argetsinger said.

If you like to feel the camaraderie of group suffering in real-time, live-streaming classes drop you into the studio as the classes are happening, blending solo and group fitness in a new way. Perhaps the best-known example is Peloton, the premium bike and treadmill brand that connects you to live classes for an extra jolt of inspiration, not to mention performance-tracking metrics and a real-time leaderboard to keep you motivated. The start-up costs are high: $2,245 for the bike and $4,295 for the treadmill, with a $39 monthly fee for access to the classes.

Peloton is the ultimate proof that not only are people willing to work out at home, but theyre willing to make a pretty significant investment in it, August said.

And then theres Mirror (base price $1,495, plus a $39 monthly fee), an LCD screen that looks like a full-length mirror, except that instead of flaunting your beautiful reflection, it broadcasts live and on-demand fitness classes in more than 20 workout genres. Mirror recently launched one-on-one personal training, meaning that thanks to the built-in speaker, microphone and video camera, a trainer can correct your form, encourage you and/or judge your messy workout room, all from thousands of miles away.

Virtual reality games have the potential to change the way we exercise, too. The Virtual Reality Institute of Health and Exercise (yep, its a thing) estimates how many calories per minute VR games burn. Playing the musical rhythm game Audioshield Modded, for example, burns 10-13 calories per minute, the same as youd shed in a SoulCycle class. The boxing game Knockout League burns 8-10 calories a minute, about what youd singe rowing, and Hot Squat, a VR game dedicated to doing as many squats as you can, kills about as many calories per minute as playing tennis.

Because of the increased options and unlimited flexibility, almost anyone can become an at-home workout rat, but exercising at home instead of at the gym is especially appealing to new and stay-at-home moms, introverts and people working nontraditional schedules.

There are seasons of our lives for different things, Argetsinger said. Its easy for discipline to fade. Habits are hard to stick to. At home, there are no excuses you just get up and turn on your phone or computer. Were giving people options and letting them feel like its possible and accessible. We all need that, especially busy moms.

August agreed that moms are a large part of her demographic, along with at-home workers with crazy schedules and those living in more isolated areas who might not otherwise have access to fitness classes.

Fitting that studio class into your schedule can be a challenge,August said. If youre at home and have 30 minutes come up, you cant go to a studio, but you can press play on a video. And if you live outside a major city, you may not even have access to a yoga studio.

Of course, when youre home alone and bending yourself into curious positions or going gung-ho with the jump squats, injuries can happen. Its important to follow credentialed trainers who demonstrate good form and to listen to your body when it says that no, your knees really dont bend that way. And if youre in pain beyond the expected muscle burn, go see a professional. In real life.

Until the technology comes along to keep us healthy without having to put in the effort of actually moving our bodies (fingers crossed!), weve got a multitude of convenient, creative, easy-to-use and follow options that we can do whenever we want, from wherever we are. Whether you crunched and kicked along with Jane Fonda the first time around or you werent born until after the leotard craze had died out, theres a home workout for you.

The future of fitness is here, and it looks a lot like a sweaty you in your living room.
