The key to weight loss is not starvation or even fasting for unrealistically long stretches. These two actions will only lead to a temporary drop in your weight and with this temporary drop, a number of health issues will start popping. And, both your physical and mental health will get affected. Now that weve established that starving or fasting is not going to help you, well let Bharat Sahu expedite on his weight loss journey that nudged him to create a customised diet as a part of his weight loss plan to lose 38 kgs trim from 122 kgs to 84 kgs.
At my heaviest, I weighed 122 kgs and looked way older than my actual age, which was 30 at the time I commenced my weight loss journey; a lot of people even started addressing me as 'uncle'. However, the moment thats really worth deeming as the turning point of my life was during a holiday in Thailand. I was not allowed to go paragliding due to my weight. Out of 50 people in our group, I was the only one who didnt get to paraglide. It was a very embarrassing moment but it showed me the reality of my body and health. So, after I returned from Thailand, I decided to enrol myself in a gym and also start eating right to lose weight.
With this decision also came a lot of obstacles. The first being, there was no gym near my house. So Id travel around 35 kms daily to go to work (I am a teacher), and then travel close to 30 kms more to go to the gym. But it was worth it! Here, take a look at the gym routine that helped me tone my body:
I started with cardio - mostly running and cycling. I could not skip due to my heavy weight in the beginning, but eventually things got better. My clothes started loosening and I lost 3 kgs in the first month itself."
"For the first four months, my routine focused on cardio more, and less on weight training. I also did some functional exercises daily. But after losing around 10 kgs, I started weight training more intensely (by increasing the weights) but never skipped cardio still. This routine was followed dedicatedly 6 days/week. Simultaneously, Bharat also worked on creating a diet plan perfect for his body type. He breaks it down for us below.
I am a pure vegetarian I dont even eat eggs. So to los weight, I made a proper diet chart by shuffling through various articles online and offline. I did not fast or follow any salad-based starving diets. The main highlights of my diet were (and still are):
1. Proper home-cooked food
2. Little or no sweets at all
3. No junk or fried food
4. And no online food delivery as well!
If I wanted to eat something that I was craving, Id eat it in a very moderate amount and even compensate for it by working out extra in the gym. This is what my daily meals comprised:
Breakfast: Tea without sugar or very little sugar with two suji rusks or biscuits + poha/idli/upma
Lunch: Three chapatis with dal, veggies, curd and salad
Evening snacks: A cucumber/curd with a fruit and 5-6 almonds + a cup of black coffee before going to the gym
Dinner: Two chapatis with dal, veggies OR khichdi
Post-dinner: One glass of warm milk without sugar
This diet plan was and is actually very easy to follow. Everything is homemade. I ate roti with ghee but didnt add any extra ghee in dal nothing is harmful when eaten in moderate quantities. I ate cucumber or roasted chana whenever I felt hungry; drank lots of water as well as green tea.

Everybody is different and everyones bodies take a different amount of time to lose weight. I never took fat burners or any powder. My transformation took close to two years. It was slow as compared to others because it was totally natural. So, start working out, make the mirror your best friend, get a friend to accompany you, dont lose hope if u dont see any results in the beginning, it is a slow process.

What is your best exercise advice?
Simplicity and consistency. Start simple with a plan and be consistent. You can always expand, add extra days or work out harder later. But first build confidence, build a habit and learn what works for you.
When I build programs, I aim for: upper body push, upper body pull, hip dominate exercise, knee dominate exercise, core strength and cardio. This typically creates a well-balanced routine for most people.
I encourage people to be uncomfortable with exercise. Breathe harder than normal and work to feel a slight burning of the muscles. Focus on frequency to start with: one to three times a week consistently, starting with 510 minutes a day and progress slowly. People feel they need to exercise for 60 minutes or its not worth it, when in reality anything is better than nothing.
Walking is underrated! When all else fails, try to get more steps than normal. Find your baseline step count using a pedometer or your phones built-in step counter. Work on adding 500-1000 more steps each month.
Plain and simple: hard work, plus time. Individuals who succeed are able to do so because they change behaviors, change the environment around them and make healthy decisions 80% of the time. Using food tracking apps, trying new group classes and health coaches all add a layer of accountability.
Instead of focusing on the scale, professionally we are now more interested in the individual parts: muscle, bone, fat tissue and hydration status. To answer these questions, we acquired an InBody Body Composition machine. Now we can measure body fat percentage, estimate metabolic rate and provide realistic end-goal weights for each person. This information drives the exercise program and nutrition strategies because it can be very specific for each person, which brings better results.

Frank and Linda Burkhard aren't slowing down.
Like many senior citizens, the Arbutus Park Retirement Community residents maintain active lifestyles, volunteering and socializing in the community.
"Just because you are retired from your job you've done for 20 or 30 years doesn't mean you sit at home and be a couch potato," 68-year-old Linda Burkhard said on a break from volunteering at Arbutus Park Manor nursing facility.
To help keep themselves healthy, the couple regularly participate in exercise classes both at Arbutus and at East Hills Recreation.
Seniors looking to become more active in the new year have free access to more than 80 gyms and facilities in Cambria and Somerset counties.
The Silver Sneakers program, a national network of facilities offering programs for seniors, is included in all Medicare Advantage plans through Highmark and UPMC For Life.
Exercise can really help people live longer, healthier lives, said Helene Weinraub, UPMC Health Plan vice president for Medicare. It is not just for body builders. Now gyms have classes for everybody.
Insurance companies offer the Silver Sneakers benefit as part of an overall focus on wellness, said Ellen Galardy, Highmark vice president for senior markets.
Healthy members allow us to provide health care for more people, Galardy said. We can stretch our dollars farther. And healthy members are happier members.
Johnstown YWCA Aquatics Director Viola Najjar testifies to the benefits of regular exercise. The 88-year-old leads several water fitness classes for seniors.
Programs for older people are designed to be low impact to avoid stressing bones and joints. Water exercise is naturally low impact, Najjar said.
It's so good for every part of your body, she said, noting that arthritis sufferers and those recovering from joint replacement surgery are able to work out in the 88-degree water.
It's a wonderful thing for older people, Najjar said. It's a good feeling. We have them do exercise from their head down to their feet.
'Keeps us active'
Frank Burkhard, 72, says he and his wife illustrate the value of a fitness routine.
I see a good bit of benefit from the exercise, he said. It keeps us active.
If I am off for two weeks, I see a difference, Linda Burkhard said.
The Burkhards are among 18 residents of Arbutus' independent living cottages and personal care unit who are regulars at Arbutus activities aide Diane Walker's twice-weekly exercise class.
Walker says the program is specially designed for older people, adding that she can see the results. Participants range in age from their late 60s to early 90s.
"When they begin, they are very slow and apprehensive, but as they get stronger, you can see the strength in their arms and their legs how high they can kick," Walker said at Arbutus. "I see an improvement in their balance. When they are walking, you don't see them wobble as much."
Lori Delic is an exercise physiologist at Silver Sneakers-participating HealthStyles at Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber. She says research shows that regular activity helps improve the quality of life for older people.
As we age, we are naturally going to be losing muscle mass, Delic said. Vital capacities are going decrease with age. Exercise is one way to combat that and slow the progression of these things.
You have to keep moving to stay moving. When you stop moving, that's when things decline.
'Fun and ... friendship'
Silver Sneakers classes include exercise, yoga and water fitness options geared especially for older people. In addition to the classes, a Silver Sneakers card provides full use of participating gyms' workout equipment and other programs. Each member gets one session with a personal trainer who can develop a program based on the individual's abilities and goals, Weinraub said.
We want to keep you as active as possible, Dwayne Kaufman, aquatics and fitness director, said from the Johnstown YMCA.
It is all designed for people of this age group, he continued. With the yoga classes, we use chairs. We don't have people crawling around on the floor.
There are also at-home fitness kits and videos available for those who can't get to the gym.
But senior exercise programs also include an important social opportunity, the experts say.
It's for exercise, but it's fun and it's friendship, East Hills Recreation instructor Arlene Penrod said. It's just an amazing program. It gets them out and they have a lot of fun.
Class members often get together for dinners and other gatherings, she said.
It's the same at Arbutus, Linda Burkhard said.
We have a nice socializing time, with a little exercise thrown in, she said. Sometimes we laugh so hard tears are rolling down our faces, but in a good way.

Failing New Year’s Resolutions Need a Monday Reset – Healthline

Monday may be the most unloved day of the week. For many people, it represents returning to work after the relaxation of the weekend.
But Mondays also may be the best day to start a healthy new routine not just as a New Years resolution but at any time of the year.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland say that Mondays should be viewed as a day for fresh starts.
The hashtag #MondayMotivation trends for a reason.
And with New Years Day 2020 falling on a Wednesday, this first Monday of the year is the day that many people are kicking off their New Years resolutions, 85 percent of which are reportedly health related.
The Monday Campaigns Healthy Monday Reset initiative supports New Years resolutions throughout the year.
The program provides weekly reminders to reinforce habits and actions that can prevent heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and other debilitating chronic health conditions, said Ron Hernandez, managing director of the Monday Campaigns.
The Monday Cues circulated by the nonprofit can range from reminders to practice deep breathing for 5 to 8 minutes to combat stress as well as recipes for meatless meals and encouragement to increase exercise such as running a Monday Mile.
The weekly Monday resets are especially useful following weeks where diet, exercise, and wellness goals may have gone unmet.
That can lead to a slump in motivation that contributes to the 80 percent of New Years resolutions that fail within a month, said Hernandez.
He noted that research from the Data Decisions Group conducted for the Monday Campaigns found that 73 percent of respondents said that refreshing their intentions every Monday would help them stick to their New Years resolutions.
A similar number said the resets help them get back on task after indulging over the weekend.
If you fall off the wagon, it gives you 52 opportunities to get back on track or refresh your goals, Hernandez told Healthline.
Health-related Google searches peak after the weekend, according to researchers.
Thats why health-promotion programs such as The Monday Campaigns focus their outreach efforts on the beginning of the work week.
People are more likely to begin new diets and exercise routines, or take positive health steps like quitting smoking or scheduling doctors appointments on Mondays than on any other day, according to The Monday Campaigns, which is a public health initiative associated with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and the Maxwell School of Syracuse University.
Theres a spike in people getting health information on Mondays and Tuesdays more than any other day of the week, and people are also more receptive to the information on those days, said Hernandez.
Interest in The Monday Campaigns Meatless Mondays campaign and other initiatives also rises around the New Year, he noted.
Beginning the week with healthy behaviors helps to support good intentions throughout the week, according to research from the Data Decisions Group.
People who commit to changes on a Monday are more likely to continue through the rest of the week, Hernandez said.
Mondays are also a cultural concept. People absolutely view it as a beginning, he added. There is a percentage of people who view Mondays as something to dread, but also many who see it as an opportunity to get back on track.
This is all true even in a year when the calendar dictates that many people start their new resolutions in the middle of the week.
Given the low success rate of most resolutions, the first Monday of the new year isnt too soon to recommit to your goals, said Hernandez.
The Mondays Campaign partners with employers, schools, the media, and community groups to encourage healthy changes.
Affiliated campaigns include Meatless Monday, Kids Cook Monday, the stop-smoking Quit and Stay Quit Monday, Caregiver Monday, Man Up Monday (aimed at raising awareness of sexual health), the exercise-focused DeStress Monday.
Theres also Monday 2000, which encourages adults to reduce their calorie intake to 2,000 per day.

Ugh. Can't avoid it anymore. It's the first Monday of 2020. Time for a clean slate in tackling weight loss and getting healthy after eating like crap and not making any time to work out for the last few months of 2019. Are you also in that place of having to start fresh for the new year? If so, follow along or do it with me!
2019 started off great for me. I was in pretty good shape through the spring and summer, spending time at the gym, and eating right. Maybe not perfect, but more good than bad.
Then September hit and I couldn't find an ounce of time to work out or eat right. I was overwhelmed with what I had to do as a mom and I put myself on the back burner. I don't mind putting my child first, but if I want to stay healthy enough to be around for my boys, then I know that being healthy can't be put off any longer.
By last November and December, I was insane with stress, lack of sleep, and eating whatever I could get my hands on. I had no time to grocery shop and cook, no time to exercise, and had zero discipline from that lack of sleep. Also, I tend to eat for comfort when I am stressed. And am I the only person who gains 5 pounds just by looking at a Yodel?
Of course the more I ate (badly), the more I just wanted to curl up on the couch in a blanket, hide from the world and give up on myself. And the more I strayed from any sort of healthy eating plan, the more I realized that since I was in 'cheat mode', I should use that opportunity to eat the things I never allow myself: Entenmann's, Wendy's, pizza, Chinese, etc.
Do I feel like crap? Yes, of course. The minute I finish stuffing my face. Can I stop? I sure hope so. I know what to do. But t's making the time, finding the motivation to remain disciplined and getting back on a routine that is challenging. So now I have to make the time to grocery shop, prep meals, clean/chop veggies, cook, and get to the gym. Plus I have to work up the discipline to get off of sugar, gluten, and dairy. Ugh.
Today I will start by making sure I down half of my body weight in (filtered) water (I use a Brita filter), and go grocery shopping for lemons for said water, along with lots of fresh salad material from the produce aisle and some frozen veggies that I can make and serve steamed or sauted. Baby steps. Today if I can get to the water with lemon, it will be the first small victory.
I have set up an appointment for tomorrow to start a medical fitness program called PREP at The Atlantic Club in Manasquan and Red Bank that your doctor (or gyno, chiropractor, orthopedist, nurse practitioner) can refer you to the way mine did. You don't need to be a member of The Atlantic Club to start this program. It's 60 days for 60 dollars!
You will hear more about that as I work on strength training and cardio while being monitored for safety. This particular physician-referred exercise program requires a minimum commitment of 3 days a week at the fitness center (two of those days include meeting with a trainer.) This program will make me accountable and will give me the tools I need. I already know that I can't do it on my own because I have tried. Being accountable is very helpful.
This program also requires getting on a scale and the gathering of some health stats before beginning. Translation: measurements of body fat, muscle mass, blood pressure, and resting heart rate.
So tomorrow I will suck it up, squeeze my eyes shut, and get on the scale to face the music. I will try to be philosophical and kind to myself, but in all honesty I am beating the crap out of myself mentally for the bad choices I have made to put me in the position of having to re-do all the good I once did, all because I ended up sabotaging myself. I've been on a rollercoaster of ups and downs.
At least I know I'm in good company -- I'm sure every gym parking lot will be packed today. And I'll bet every grocery store was a madhouse yesterday.

NEWS A year ago, I set a goal to incorporate more weights and toning into my workout routine. And while my friends invested in gym memberships and/or paid online exercise programs, I opted for free workouts from Fitness Blender. (Nasdaq: EPZM), a late-stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel epigenetic therapies, today announced that it exercised its option to sell $50 million of its common stock to Royalty Pharma, pursuant to the terms of the companies recent funding agreements announced on November 4, 2019. The company notified Royalty Pharma that it was exercising the prespecified option when the trailing average share price reached the $20 per share cap. The closing of the sale and issuance of the shares is subject to the satisfaction or waiver of customary conditions.
Epizyme expects that this additional capital, combined with its existing cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities on December 31, 2019 of approximately $381 million (preliminary and unaudited), will further support the companys current operating runway into 2022, which includes the planned epithelioid sarcoma and follicular lymphoma launch activities for tazemetostat, as well as other potential value-creating initiatives.

Specialized training programs in a supervised environment
I joined LIVE WELL because I needed a workout program that would help alleviate the chronic pain of fibromyalgia and arthritis and help my body move with more freedom, says member Connie Godfrey. My program is based on the exercises my body needs to heal and become stronger as I track and monitor my progress.
Connie has been at LIVE WELL for two years and now attends the newly opened North Delta Clinic. At 50, her health is more important to her than ever before.

I have chronic and painful joint issues due to Lupus and Fibromyalgia. I also had liver failure in 2013 and kidney failure and pneumonia with collapsed bilateral lungs in 2016. I couldnt laugh either. I needed an exercise program. created for my health challenges.
Today, Cecilias regular exercise program has made her pain more manageable, reducing the number of flares and hospital visits.
