11 Out-of-the-Box Fitness Challenges That Our Editors Want You to Try in 2020 – msnNOW

I'm not really one for resolutions, but I'll admit that when the new year swings around, I get the itch to refresh my routine. As a fitness editor, I spend a lot of the year trying out new classes, eating plans, and workout techniques, putting fitness myths to the test. A lot of them don't work out, but every so often, I'll love a short-term experiment so much that I mix it into my usual routine. Those are the kind of new-year changes I'm looking for in 2020.

Not all fitness resolutions have to be about weight loss or muscle gain (although those are great goals to have!). Refreshing your health and fitness game can be as simple as getting more sleep, drinking more water, making time for mental health, or setting a fun goal, like completing a set of push-ups or pull-ups every day. And if there's a fitness practice you're intrigued by, chances are one of our editors has tried it and can tell you if it's worth your time.

Click through the slideshow above for some of our favorite experiments: specific, actionable things you can do to feel better on a daily basis, from moving up your bedtime by 20 minutes to meditating for 10 minutes a day. They range from simple to challenging, but our editors found that the obstacles were worth it. Read through their experiences, choose a favorite or two, then try them out and see for yourself.

2020: Welcome to the Year of Fitness – OZY

Its that time of year again: Weve fested and feasted and now we want to do something about it. Its January and we want to get fitter (cue New Years resolution groan).

But theres good news for getting fit in 2020, even if your partner didnt surprise you with a Peloton this holiday season: Its all about you. Yes, some trends involve the latest in gear and equipment. But theres more focus on metrics (as they relate to your body) and how you choose to participate. From wearable tech to virtual classes to mindfulness, its all about putting you at the center of your workout.

That might involve online training, more lifting, especially geared toward women, and entertainment-style indoor cycling, says Magz Kordiuk, a Toronto-based fitness professional with 10 years of experience.

Whatever your style, here are the ways we will be embracing fitness in the year to come.

You might ask, werent wearables big in 2018 and 2019 too? Yes, and they are maintaining that fierce pace in 2020. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) annual survey of worldwide fitness trends recently found that wearable tech is the No. 1 trend for the year ahead. Its all about keeping an eye on your personal stats, whether thats with smartwatches, fitness and GPS trackers or heart rate monitors. Its an estimated $95 billion industry with no signs of slowing down. Case in point: Googles plans to snap up FitBit in the coming year.

Raise your hand if you love going to the gym. Some fitness enthusiasts are ditching gym memberships in favor of high-tech home equipment. Think the Mirror (that helps you watch yourself exercise), virtual reality sports (play away those calories), and yes, the Peloton bike, where you can livestream classes from the comfort of your own home, sweating as much and wherever you like. But virtual coaching is also tailoring the workout experience. For example, iFit takes treadmill runners and walkers around the world via instructor-led, screen-based workouts the incline and speed adjust according to the terrain, whether thats the mountains of Patagonia or the beaches of Portugal, and you feel like youre kinda almost there. Virtual coaching removes the guesswork out of fitness, explains iFit trainer Mecayla Froerer, and eliminates the possibility of cheating.

We want to get fit, but we dont always have the time, and lets face it: these days were more distracted than ever. Which is why we can likely expect the fitness world catering to shorter attention spans in the new year, Kordiuk says.

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), which involves bursts of high-intensity effort with periods of recovery in between, has long been used for cardio and fat-blasting. As we move into 2020, look for HIIT to continue to feature in fitness routines around the world (it ranks No. 2 in the ACSM study). But we might see an uptick in hybrid workouts, such as HIIT yoga. Variations of yoga are also looking to become popular, according to IPSO.com although gin yoga (yes, you get to drink gin while perfecting your Toppling Tree) might end up being just a flavor-of-the-month option.

Theres also the HIIT workout thats a hit with the likes of Meghan Markle and Khlo Kardashian: the Megaformer, a beast of an exercise machine that combines cardio, endurance, strength and flexibility all at once. Its one of the fastest-growing fitness trends, according to ClassPass, and Livestrong.org cites it as the breakout workout trend of 2020.

When working on our fitness, its easy to get caught up in the numbers: split times, crunches done, pounds lost. In 2020, look for a focus on mind and body connection being kind to yourself and, in turn, the muscles and bones that keep you going. This can encompass everything from mindful eating to meditation to getting proper rest. Slowing down and being good to yourself can result in a plethora of benefits, including injury prevention and better mental health. Mindfulness goes hand in hand with any fitness discipline, Kordiuk explains. The more you can hone in on being present in what youre doing and why youre doing it, the more clear your intention becomes, adding that with intention and mindfulness, focusing on your fitness can become a journey, a transformation and/or evolution.

Regardless of how you decide to get up off the couch in 2020, theres one surefire path to improved fitness: Make yourself accountable, says Kordiuk.

Remember: Its all about you.

Houstons fitness czar offers tips for sticking to healthy resolutions – Houston Chronicle

Health and fitness expert Samir Becic has a New Years resolution for the entire city of Houston.

I want to make Houston one of the fittest cities in America, he said. I cant tell you how motivated I am to make our great city the healthiest.

As with any resolution, a list of excuses can pop up. For example, Houstonians often complain about the climate or the lack of opportunities for fitness, Becic said. Unlike colder places, however, Houston is an ideal place for an active life, he said, with parks that make it easy to get outdoors.

Becic was recently named Houstons health czar by Mayor Sylvester Turner. Before founding Health Fitness Revolution and ReSYNC Fitness, he served as fitness director for Bally Total Fitness.

He has observed firsthand the wave of individuals signing up for gym memberships in January and February, ready to tackle their New Years resolutions. Then that excitement goes down, and suddenly they disappear, Becic said. By April, they stop coming completely.

His goal is to make fitness a year-round lifestyle of Houstonians.

Sticking with resolutions can be an ideal way to focus on self-care, said Ashley Garza, who founded, with Heather Hazen, Cormentum Health and Wellness in west Houston. As health and lifestyle coaches, Garza and Hazen recognize that committing to change is both mental and physical.

Everybody should take time to invest in themselves, Garza said. We all need to recharge.

Health experts in Houston have a number of tips for making resolutions stick:

1. Start slow. Its a marathon, not a sprint, Becic said. Its step-by-step. Keep in mind that better health is a process, he added. That means setting small, realistic goals, like losing 6 pounds in a month instead of 30 pounds. Becic also recommends starting with shorter work-outs in the gym, and adding five minutes at a time. Starting slow and being steady can help reduce injuries and exhaustion, he said.

The same is true of diet. Instead of eliminating everything all at once, make minor changes and work toward being healthier. Jill Sechi, owner of Wellness Coaching and Nutrition Therapy, has similar advice. A lot of resolutions are very broad and overwhelming, she said. Youve got to make sure your goals are realistic and small.

2. Celebrate small successes. Feelings of anxiety and depression surrounding weight loss often prevent people from working out, Becic said. Positive reinforcement for even small wins can help. Realistic goals make celebrating small successes easier, he said. For example, be excited about losing 10 pounds instead of beating yourself up for not losing 40. When you achieve something, you feel better about yourself, Becic said.

3. Develop patience - and flexibility. Reaching your goals takes time. Becic recommends being prepared to wait longer to see lasting results. Expect six to eight weeks to make up for a year of an inactive lifestyle, he said.

Garza added that sometimes success means being able to handle change. Find ways to cope, she said. If a goal isnt perfect, modify it and continue on a path to better health. Sechi said that setting manageable goals can be difficult. Instead, she recommends spending time reflecting on values. Values are not something you can accomplish, she said. Instead, look at ways to continually work toward the values that define you.

4. Find a partner. A number of individuals want to be healthier in the New Year. So you have plenty of partners to choose from, Becic said. Have a friend, and you can each motivate each other to stick with it. Hazen and Garza serve as each others accountability partners at Cormentum Health. Youre not in it alone, Garza said.

5. Narrow your focus. Be specific about your resolutions, Garza said. Once you gain momentum, you can go on to another, she said. Having too many goals can dilute your ability to conquer any, Becic said. Often people pick multiple goals at once, he said. Why stress yourself out? Pick one goal at a time. Be specific about what you want and hone in on that, he said.

6. Write it down. cCmmitting to a resolution with pencil and paper makes for a stronger commitment in general, Hazen said. Written goals are important, she said. Not only does it serve as a reminder, but it also becomes an affirmation. It helps you think, I can do this, she said.

7. Learn to love yourself. Hating what you see in the mirror is never helpful, Becic said, even if thats why you want to change. He recommends saying, I will change my body, but I will love myself in each phase.

8. Make time to rest. The body requires rest to become healthier, Becic said. Getting the proper amount of rest is essential. You need sleep, Becic said. He recommends getting seven to eight hours each night.

9. Hydrate. Its not simply the amount of water that matters. Its also how and when you drink it, Becic said. He recommends getting about a gallon a day. Every time you feel hungry, drink one big glass of water, and wait 10 to 15 minutes, he said. Most times, youre not hungry. Youre just thirsty, and your brain cannot tell the difference. He also suggests not drinking too much during a meal to promote healthy digestion and to reduce bloating.

10. Think about your triggers. Since behavioral change has a mental and emotional component, Hazen recommends exploring the root causes of behaviors. What makes a person smoke when theyre trying to quit? What makes you go to the pantry and grab a Twinkie? she asks. Thinking about triggers can make individuals better prepared to address and avoid them.

11. Eliminate stress. Stress can prevent rest and self-love - and even stop individuals from going to the gym or eating properly. Find the reason why youre stressed, Becic said. Start meditating, and getting in tune with yourself. He says to spend time to find whats causing stress and how to destress. Then, take that calmer path.

12. Make it fun. Becoming healthier doesnt have to be a bootcamp - even if thats your preferred fitness program. Hazen said that making small changes and seeing success can be rewarding. Change doesnt have to be painful, she said. It can actually be exciting.

[2020 Outlook] Top health and fitness trends to get you in the best shape – YourStory

The first wealth, Ralph Waldo Emerson famously said, is health.

The slow living lifestyle, which focuses on adopting slower approaches to aspects of everyday life, will permeate into the health industry, and is likely to rule the coming decade. Born in Italy, slow living is a conscious, intentional, mindful, and organic way of life that aims to promote balance, ease, and sanity, and lower stress.

Last decade saw the rise of high-intensity interval training, the keto diet, and wearables. This year will be about slowing down be it stress levels, workouts, diets, drinking habits, and more. Our list of the top 2020 health trends reflects this shift.

With rising awareness that rearing livestock has significant environmental and human cost, there has been an increase in vegetarianism and veganism across the world.

As DJ Blatner, author of The Flexitarian Diet, says: Its more about getting the benefits of eating more plants without having to follow strict diet rules. Its about just eating what works for you without labeling it.

Till now, most trainers recommended high-intensity interval training (HIIT), which involved short, intense bouts of exercise that promised kept your metabolism revved up for hours after your workout. But slowing down is likely to bring in high-intensity, low-impact interval training (HILIT).

Top trainers are now rooting for HILIT as it ensures strenuous workouts while preserving bodies for longevity and ensuring proper recovery.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has awoken us to the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle by listing physical inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality causing an estimated 3.2 million deaths globally.

Reason enough for many companies to incorporate standing desks and meetings into their offices. Research shows that long walks and extended hours of standing can lower body mass index and cholesterol levels, improve blood sugar and posture, and lead to more energy and core strength. The war against sitting is on, and will continue through the decade.

Umpteen studies have revealed that sleep deprivation can fuel depression, apart from health consequences like stroke, diabetes, and heart disease.

With realisation of the impact of sleep on overall health peaking in 2019, the next few years are likely to see the 40 winks grow into 60, 75, and may be 90! In the US, nap bars places where professionals can head to grab a quick power nap during the workday are cropping up.

India may not have them yet, but sleep is certainly on everyones mind.

Terry Cralle, a registered nurse and sleep clinician who co-authored Sleeping Your Way to the Top: How to Get the Sleep You Need to Succeed, writes: The trend from here on out will be to value sleep, prioritise it, maximise, and optimise it. We will likely look for more and better ways to optimise sleep quality by way of better sleep surfaces (mattresses, pillows and bedding), better soundproofing, natural lighting, better pajamas, better schedules, and more respect for our need for sleep.

For many years now, gyms have been the go-to place when it comes to staying fit. But home workouts are now becoming de rigueur as people, strapped for time, try to make fitness fit into their daily lives.

Were all set to see an increase in sales of home gym equipment, streamed fitness content, and on-demand workouts. The rise of InstaTrainers will see many more fitness enthusiasts turn to free or subscription-based personalised or nearly-personal plans from online trainers.

Many of us will cancel gym memberships, as on-demand workouts seem more accessible, inclusive, flexible, and easier to fit into busy lifestyles. The home workout, likely to be a huge fitness trend, can also be credited to more professionals working from home.

Tired of vacations that leave you wanting another vacation? This could be the year of getting away from packed-to-the-gills holidays that dont leave you revived and rejuvenated.

And with sleep becoming an area of focus, the wellness vacation could well metamorphose into a new holiday: the sleepcation. A vacation dedicated to help you get the shut-eye you need, this break it could be a couple of days to a week or even more will help repay your sleep debt" and return to work relaxed.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has said that wearable tech will be the top trend in fitness in 2020.

Wearable tech has become ingrained in todays culture, and the industry shows no signs of slowing down, said ACSM Past President Walter R Thompson, the lead author of the survey and associate dean in the College of Education and Human Development at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Smart watches, activity trackers, sleep trackers wearable tech will continue to trend as people get keener to track all aspects of their life. Having fitness-related data handy is also likely to help inspire us to do more.

Apart from these seven trends, others that are likely to stay on top of our minds in 2020 include the turn-it-off movement that exhorts people to opt for digital detoxes; the joy of running that will be discovered by thousands of new runners; a conscious choice of sober curiosity, advocated byRuby Warringtons Sober Curious, which states that hangovers and alcohol may be keeping you from living your best life; and circadian-synced intermittent fasting, which can help with weight loss, longevity, and reducing major disease risk.

Were at the end of the first week of 2020, and its time to pick which of these trends will be part of your resolutions this New Year. Get healthy, get wealthy!

People are Prioritizing Fitness and Family in the New Year – WNEP Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

Please enable Javascript to watch this video

NANTICOKE, Pa. New Years Day is the day people like to set goals and resolutions for the year ahead.

For some people, it was all about being more healthy and starting off 2020 at the gym, and there were plenty of people pumping iron at Nanticoke Fitness Center.

I try to work out a lot throughout the year, but you know, a lot of the times, I have lapses where I stop going. This year is kind of like make sure I stick to a steady schedule, Justin Casey said.

Just to live a healthy lifestyle. Live longer. A lot people have families, so the healthier you are, the more time you'll be able to spend with your family and keep up with the little ones, Mark Malshefski said.

Little ones we spoke to also want to be more active in the new year, including 7-year-old Jackson Griffith of Scranton, who wants to play more baseball.

In addition to making fitness more of a priority in 2020, people we spoke to say they also want to spend less time on their devices.

We want to do more family time, and we hope that everyone can kind of just disconnect this year and do more things together, Alyssa Wintermute of Jessup said.

Southside Bowl in Scranton was also busy on New Years Day. People of all ages were looking to start the year off right by spending more time with family.

To help my mom out more at home and walk my dog more and take her outside more, Isla Gargone, 8-years-old, of Wyoming said.

Beyond these individual goals, people have much broader hopes.

My hope for the country is just, you know, there's a big divide right now," Casey said. "So, I really hope we figure that out this year."

Solve the world hunger, world peace, Jason Saunders of Scranton added.

My hope is that 2020 is better than 2019, Frani Malinoski of Scranton said.

Fitness professional offers advice to keep with your New Year’s resolution – WOWT

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - New year, new you.

The start of the decade means people with brand new resolutions are out in force at the gym.

Tony Schuster has been in the fitness industry for a long time and has worked as a trainer at Life Time Fitness for a year now.

He says the new year is the perfect time to kick things off at the gym.

"It's always nice to have that reset button," Schuster said.

Gyms like Life Time Fitness see hundreds of newcomers signing up between December and February.

Unfortunately, keeping them there is a whole other story.

"We see a lot of people come in for like two or three months and then drop off to where they were," Schuster explained.

The trainer estimates half of those who sign up, actually keep on with their fitness goals throughout the year.

"They're motivated right now -- but it's never the extended motivation. They see all of these cool things online about easy quick things to do and that's not necessarily the case," he said. "So you see a lot of people have a lot of energy and motivation to start, they don't see those results right away and then they start coming down."

That long term motivation comes more easily for some like Jeff Olson than others.

"It's been two years now," Olson tells 6 News.

It was his baby girl that kick-started his fitness journey.

"I figured I had to be a dad that lived a long time" Olson explained.

With identical twin girls on the way, motivation might be outpaced by his stay-at-home dad duties. But he's not complaining.

"Living the dream every day," Olson said with a chuckle.

For the rest of us, grabbing a gym buddy and focusing on a long term goal is the key to success.

"Meeting with a fitness professional, going with a group of people. Having a good support system to help them get in and keep them accountable," Schuster said.

Aside from fitness goals, quitting smoking, improving your finances and spending more time with loved ones are other popular resolutions for the new year.

From Sustainability to Restorative Fitness, the 7 Wellness Trends That Will Define 2020 – Vogue

Wellnessboth the word and the conceptdominated the lexicon throughout the last decade, and its prominence shows no signs of stopping. Rather, it seems that the 20s will see a continuance of establishing and elevating wellness trends. For example, CBD is primed for a new-era makeover, menstrual care is stepping out of the shadows, fitness is mellowing out, and cocktails have some health-centric competition. From sustainabilitys buzzy build to the new-mom care market, these are the wellness trends slated to surviveand thrivethrough the new year.

CBD, Better Than EverAt this point, CBD is practically ubiquitous. Since the FDA approved the marijuana-derived drug in 2018, Gummies, vape pens, and beauty products of all sorts have saturated the market, making cannabidiol seem like less of a drug and more of a cultural mandate. But it is still a drug, and thus, the slew of recent regulations passed within New York state are unsurprisingand good news for consumers. Expect CBD products that are better crafted, vetted, and ultimately more effective as the new decade dawns.

Booze-Free Beverages Get EuphoricNumbing out is so last year. The new guard of out-and-about beverages aims to enhance your natural inclination toward positivity vibes, offering a welcome, thoughtful alternative to conventional cocktails. First came Kina collection of tasty blends that naturally elevate the endocrine system through a mixture of nootropics, adaptogens, and botanicsan option soon joined by calming drink Recess. In 2020, look for Ghia, dreamed up by a former Glossier employee based on the belief that fun is an inside job, and one that can be healthily prodded to come out and play.

The Rise of Wellness ClubsWhen it comes to bettering oneself, theres power in numbers. And while the 2010s saw the rise of coworking spaces such as WeWork and The Wing, the new decade is slated to take that ethos to the wellness world. Parsley Health, for example, has been around for some years now, but its membership-minded, East-meets-West approach to health issuesand its millennialist atmospheremakes the traditional doctors office seem like a relic. And with the Tia Clinic (a members-only gynecology and wellness practice) and The Well (which describes itself as an ecosystem for wellness) joining ranks, its safe to say this is a trend on the rise.

Mindful Menstrual CareIf the 2010s were the decade of menstrual cups, the 2020s will be the decade of an entire overhaul in traditional menstrual carebeginning with externals. Last autumn, New York became the first state in the nation to require that every menstrual product on the market disclose its ingredients on the packaging. This may seem like an obvious step, but for an industry that has thus far run on pretty boxes and a general air of mystery, its also an essential one. Menstrual stigma has been effective in narrowing our attentionto just clean it up and be done with it, explains Christina Bobel, president of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research and a professor of Womens, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston. This is how we have been socialized, and the stigma works to resist conscious consumption. Considering how much meticulous consideration goes into everything else women put in and on our bodies, the need to know in regard to menstrual products represents the burgeoning of a cultural shift.
