500-Year-Old Inuit Mummies Found To Have Clogged Arteries Despite Their Fishy Diet – IFLScience

Oily fish and other foods that are rich inomega-3 fatty acids are supposed to help protect us from heart disease, so it seems unlikely that ancient Inuit hunters would have had poor cardiovascular health, given their marine-based diet. Yet surprisingly, scans of four mummified Inuits who died 500 years ago have revealed that they suffered from blocked arteries, just like millions of people living today.

Many of the unhealthy habits associated with modern lifestyles such as excessive sugar consumption and too much time sitting on sofas have contributed to the rise of cardiovascular disease, which is now the leading cause of death worldwide. In particular, atherosclerosis, which involves the build-up of fatty plaques in arteries, has become dangerously prevalent in wealthier countries.

In 2013, researchers examined 137 mummies from ancient civilizations in Egypt, Peru, and the Arctic, and were surprised to discover evidence of atherosclerosis in individuals who lived as long ago as 3100 BCE. However, none of the mummies involved in this study would have consumed a diet that was particularly high in omega-3, which is why researchersled by Ascension Healthcare in Wisconsin decided to look specifically at Inuit mummies.

Four specimens were obtained from the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, all of which were originally found on the island of Uunartaq, close to Greenland, in 1929. An analysis of dental and skeletal features revealed that the two male and two female mummies were all likely to have been between the ages of 18 and 30 when they died, while their clothes and other items found in their graves suggest that they lived in the 16th century.

Publishing their findings in the journal JAMA Network Open, the researchers explain that these individuals would have hunted from kayaks with spears, bows, and arrows for their diet of fish, birds, marine mammals, and caribou.

In spite of this diet, computed tomography (CT) scans of the mummies revealed that three of them suffered from calcified atheroma, which occurs when plaques of fatty material accumulate in arteries, causing them to harden and narrow, thereby restricting blood flow.

These plaques were remarkably similar to those seen in modern humans, and which regularly lead to fatal heart attacks and strokes by preventing blood flow around the heart and brain.

Whether or not this contributed to the Inuits deaths is impossible to tell, although the very fact that they suffered from atherosclerosis in spite of their fishy diet and vigorous lifestyle casts major doubt on any assumptions that modern lifestyles are responsible for the condition.

Exactly which factors led to the prevalence of atherosclerosis in this ancient Inuit population is also unknown, although the study authors suggest that it may have been caused by breathing in too much smoke from indoor fires.

New year, new diet: Health experts share advice on achieving a New Year’s resolution – WTHITV.com

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI)-2019 is winding down and soon 2020 will be here.

For many of us, the new year means new goals and that might mean changing our eating habits..but it's not always easy to achieve.

According to a survey, last year's top resolutions were eating healthy, getting more exercise, and saving more money.

Recent studies show that just 8% of people who set goals, achieve it. Meanwhile, 80% fail to keep it.

News 10 caught up with Blake Kramer, an exercise science major and manager at 5th Street Nutrition in Terre Haute.

He tells us thathealth-related resolutions are often broken because of a lack of consistency.

"Once you get to your goal you're going to go back to eating the way you did. You're not gonna cut your lawn and not expect it to stop growing right? So you have to keep reiterating to your body what you're trying to do," Kramer said.

The good news is there are ways you can successfully achieve your New Year's resolution. Here's how:

Start by being realistic, the first way to fall short is by making your goal unattainable.

Plan ahead... don't make your goal the day of.

Make a pros and cons list.

Reward yourself, track progress and most importantly stick to it.

"People want tosee drastic changes and I think that's not just a lot of people I think that's almost everybody but I think it's more important to set smaller goals and achieve so it gives your body and your mind something to achieve quicker," Kramer explained.

Ask the Expert: What’s the least toxic diet to eat during pregnancy? – The Irish News

Q: I'VE just found out I'm pregnant what's the safest, least toxic diet for me and my baby?

A: Dr Lida Chatzi, an associate professor of preventive medicine at the University of Southern California, has just co-authored a study into diet and levels of environmental contaminants in mothers and children. She says: "During gestation and early development, the foetus and the child, respectively, are vulnerable to the effects of environmental chemicals. A balanced diet during these periods is also critical for optimal nutritional status, but what to eat, and how much, are critical questions.

"We conducted the largest study to date examining the association between diet and levels of 33 environmental contaminants in mothers and their children. The study was conducted within the Human Early-Life Exposome (HELIX) project, a study including 1,000 pregnant women and their children who were followed up to the age of six-to-10 years across six European countries: France, Greece, Lithuania, Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom.

"We found that the higher the fish consumption, the higher the levels of toxic persistent chemicals in the blood for both pregnant women and their children. The chemicals included polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and the toxic metals arsenic and mercury.

"We also assessed the effect of dietary recommendations for fish on maternal and child levels of environmental chemicals: specifically, up to three servings of fish per week for pregnant women and up to two servings per week for children. We found that, if the recommendation was followed, it resulted in lower levels of PFAS, arsenic and mercury than if they were exceeding the dietary recommendations.

"In general, women should eat a variety of types of fish each week and avoid consumption of raw fish and large predatory fish, such as king mackerel, swordfish, shark, and tilefish. Given that there's variation of levels of pollutants potentially contained within fish, women should be aware of dietary recommendations, and adhere to guidelines.

"We also showed fruit consumption was associated with increased levels of four organophosphate pesticides metabolites, measured in urine samples for both pregnant women and children. On the other hand, children who ate organic food more than once per week had lower levels of pesticides metabolites in their urine, compared to children who reported not eating organic food.

"The choice of organic over conventionally grown fruits can contribute to lower exposures of pesticides and other environmental pollutants, while retaining the health benefits of fruit and vegetable consumption. We believe the results carry important public health messages related to the avoidance of excess exposure to environmental contaminants with toxic effects on humans."

The one crucial thing the sugar-free diet gets wrong about health – Inverse

Not long ago, fat was the evil dietary villain. Before that it was salt. Now the sugar-free diet has exploded onto the health and wellness scene and seems to top many peoples list of New Years resolutions.

Sugar-free diets encourage people to avoid table sugar (sucrose), sweeteners such as honey and maple syrup, refined flours, condiments, soft drinks, sweets, and some fruits such as bananas. Some also recommend eliminating or restricting dairy products.

The diets advocates rightly note that excessive sugar consumption may lead to obesity and therefore increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers.

And its true that Australians are eating too much of the sweet stuff, with 35 percent of an adults total daily calories now coming from discretionary foods, which includes lollipops, chocolates, and soft drinks.

But you dont need to quit sugar to lift your game on healthy eating. Quitting sugar is unlikely to improve your health any more than cutting down on ultra-processed foods, eating more vegetables, cooking food from scratch, and limiting how much extra sugar you eat and drink.

At best, the sugar-free diet is confusing and imposes an arbitrary set of rules that arent based on scientific evidence. At worst, such a restrictive diet can create food fear or an unhealthy relationship with food.

The sugar-free diet is restrictive, with lists of allowed foods (such as whole grains, blueberries, and grapefruits) and not allowed foods (such as white bread, bananas, and raisins). This inadvertently promotes a diet mentality and causes followers to worry about accidentally eating something thats not allowed.

People who worry about food are more likely to diet. This may be because they are worried specifically about their weight, or about the impact certain nutrients have on their health.

Research shows dieting is not effective over the long term and can lead to greater weight gain over time. The brain interprets dieting and restriction as a famine, which causes the storage of fat for future shortages.

Dieting is stressful. In response to this, our body releases stress hormones such as cortisol, which may cause the body to store fat, particularly in the abdominal area.

Worrying about food can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression, and is one of the defining features of the condition known as orthorexia.

Orthorexia is the overwhelming preoccupation with eating healthily. People with orthorexia spend a lot of time thinking and worrying about food and eliminating foods that are deemed impure or unhealthy. Some experts suggest this behavior is a precursor to, or a form of, an eating disorder.

Estimates suggest anywhere between seven percent and 58 percent of the population may have the condition. There are no clear diagnostic criteria, which makes it difficult to measure its prevalence.

But we know 15 percent of women will experience an eating disorder at some stage in their life. So we need to ensure nutrition advice, however well-intentioned, doesnt promote or encourage disordered eating.

Some sugar-free diets advise people to cut out or restrict healthy foods and food groups such as fruit and dairy, without evidence to support their exclusion. This perpetuates the food fear/dietary restriction cycle and may contribute to nutrient deficiencies.

These diets also recommend people avoid fruit for a period of time and then re-introduce a limited list of expensive healthy fruits (such as berries) while avoiding the cheaper unhealthy fruits such as bananas.

Whole fruit is a wonderful source of fiber essential vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants. Two servings of fruit per day can reduce the risk of developing some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Given only half of Australians eat the recommended two servings of fruit per day, the advice to restrict fruit further could result in people missing out on these benefits.

Many sugar-free followers also avoid plain dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese due to the assumption these contain sugars.

The sugar in plain dairy products is the natural lactose (a carbohydrate), which is nothing to fear. Unnecessarily avoiding dairy may increase the risk of osteoporosis if not replaced with adequate levels of calcium from other sources.

Strangely, many of the sugar-free recipes use expensive sugar alternatives such as rice malt syrup (due to its low fructose content), maple syrup (which is sometimes allowed and sometimes not), and dates to replace sugar.

However, these are still sugars and contain the same number of calories per gram as any other sugar. These alternatives offer no additional nutritional benefits other than rice malt syrup, which is a useful option only for those with a fructose malabsorption issue, and dates, which contain fiber.

People often eat more of the food containing these alternatives under the guise of it being sugar-free, which could lead to unintentional weight gain. One study found people ate about 35 percent more of a snack when it was perceived as healthy than when it was seen as unhealthy.

Eat plenty of plants, enjoy whole grains, beans, and legumes. Fruit is your friend not your enemy.

Most people could probably eat a little less sugar, a little less often, but you dont have to quit it for good to be healthy.

Savor every mouthful of that chocolate cake or sometimes food. Turn off technology and eat the cake mindfully, so that your brain can register that you have eaten it. That way you can get pleasure and satisfaction from it, and you wont be craving it again an hour later.

No matter how we choose to eat, remember that health is not simply about the number on the scale, the size of our waist, or the foods we avoid. Its also about our psychological health and our relationship with food, which is just as important as our physical health.

The Witcher’s Henry Cavill Had A ‘Miserable’ Dehydration Diet To Look Ripped Shirtless – CinemaBlend

In order to tone his muscles and appear fit onscreen, Henry Cavill says he gave up drinking water altogether. The Witcher actor dehydrated himself over the course of several days to get his skin really thin, so it sits on the muscles in scenes requiring him to be shirtless. Heres what Cavill had to say about his experience without water:

That diet sounds a bit unhealthy, though Henry Cavill clarifies that it wasnt that he had absolutely no water for all three days. Rather, he had a dwindling amount over a period of time. In his December 27 appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Cavill explains that he drank a liter and a half of water on the first day, a half a liter on the second, and absolutely no water on the third.

After the fourth day shooting these shirtless scenes sans water, Henry Cavill admits to being the most miserable person on the planet. However, Cavill revealed that, though this regimen was for aesthetic reasons, it was also used to remain fit without injuring the body.

You can watch the clip of Henry Cavill discussing his health regimen below!

Thankfully, the regimen didnt last very long and Henry Cavill seems to be in good health and spirits. However, its likely hell have to get back to drinking less water fairly soon since The Witcher Season 2 is due to start filming as early as the spring of 2020.

The Witcher Season 1 is currently available to stream on Netflix. For more on what to watch in the new year, be sure to check out our 2020 midseason schedule to find out when new and returning shows are premiering.

Joining the gym is a great first step. But at the Y, we consider ourselves so much more than just a gym. Like anything, consistency is key to helping lose weight, gain muscle and be your best. A good way to start is simply move more. Its important for kids to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, but adults need to get at least 30 minutes, too. If you do decide to join a gym in the new year, consider the Y and its KickStart program. A wellness coach can help you attain goals in three one-on-one fitness and nutrition sessions over for your 30 days. Courtney Pendleton, YMCA of San Diego County spokesperson

New Year fitness resolutions helping local gyms – WVNS-TV

Posted: Dec 30, 2019 / 11:40 PM EST / Updated: Dec 31, 2019 / 10:00 AM EST

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) Once the clock strikes midnight on Tuesday, it may be hard to get a spot on the treadmill at local gyms like the YMCA of Southern West Virginia because lets face itgetting in shape often makes its way to the top of new year resolution lists.

Director of Health and Wellness, Megan Clackler, sees it first hand every year.

Getting in shape and dieting are always at the top of the list! Clackler said. Which is good for us, we get a lot of new members and an influx of new people and old people coming back trying to get healthy for the new year.

Its the most wonderful time of the year for the Y financially speaking since they notice members cancelling or not coming as often during the holidays.

Its a huge benefit to us, Clackler added. Throughout the fall and winter months we tend to have some drop off in memberships so this is the biggest time of the year we get excited about it every year.

For many its time to shed some holiday bloatfor others its about becoming strong. Regardless of what your intentions in the gym are for 2020, dont rush the process and risk injury or even disappointment.
