Nike: Do the right thing – Workers World

Dec. 9 protest.

Portland, Ore.

A protest erupted at Nikes international headquarters here on Dec. 9 when over 400 workers demanded better treatment for women by male supervisors and a name change to the newly renovated Alberto Salazar building.

Salazar, head coach for the prestigious Nike Oregon Project, trains Olympic-bound runners. In September, Salazar was banned from coaching for four years for illegally doping and trafficking testosterone. In October, the Nike project was shut down. Nike CEO Mark Parker had been in close communication with Salazar to see if topical testosterone would trigger a positive drug test.

Former Nike athlete Mary Cain, once called the fastest girl in the world, says Salazar was banned because of the doping scandal, but that he should have been banned because of his treatment of women.

In 2018 women in the company led an internal uprising over repeated harassment by male supervisors who made vulgar, degrading comments to women workers. Former Project members, including Cain and Amanda Begley, have now come forward to expose the toxic culture created by the all-male coaching team.

In 2013, 16-year-old Cain was signed by Nike and began training with Salazar. I joined Nike because I wanted to become the best female athlete ever, said Cain in a 2019 New York Times Op-ed video series about women athletes. Instead I was emotionally and physically abused in a system designed by Alberto and endorsed by Nike. Cain was ordered to take birth control pills and diuretics to keep her weight to 114 pounds: They were convinced that in order to get better I had to get thinner.

Elite women athletes and dancers who reduce their body fat below 22 percent run the risk of compromising their health, with problems such as amenorrhea (abnormal loss of a menstrual cycle) and RED-S syndrome energy depletion that affects metabolic rate, bone health, immunity, protein synthesis and cardiovascular health.

Cain experienced amenorrhea and broke bones during her Nike training. Tests on Begley revealed her body fat was only 11 to 12 percent. Cain and Begley said Salazar weighed them publicly and shamed them as being too fat if they gained weight.

In 2015, Cain began having suicidal thoughts and started cutting herself. Salazar and the staff psychologist, who was not certified, ignored her when she spoke of the problems. Cain then decided to quit the team and stop trying to make the Olympics.

Dream crazy

When Alysia Montao, one of the top three female runners in the world, announced she was going to have a baby, Nike paused her contract and stopped paying her health insurance. This was in addition to her losing her sponsors during that time.

Getting pregnant is the kiss of death for a female athlete, said Phoebe Wright, a runner sponsored by Nike from 2010 through 2016.

Nike company flyers distributed at the Dec. 9 protest warned Nike workers they would be fired if they spoke to the media. It is typical policy for sponsors to make athletes sign confidentiality clauses to prevent them from fighting for change.

Other company flyers at the protest thanked the protesters for walking with Nike to celebrate what women bring to sports and to champion equality. Flyers also claimed that company management was committed to face-to-face time with workers to share ideas.

Nike tells us to dream crazy; we say how about you stop treating our pregnancies like injuries, said Montao. Then they tell us to believe in something; we say how about maternity leave? How about when you tell my daughter she can achieve anything, you back it up.

Have you caught onto the benefits of selenium? – Science 101

Selenium has been associated with positive health outcomes. Heres what you need to know.

Selenium is a mineral that appears naturally in soil, water, and some foods. Ongoing research has suggested that it can have positive effects on your health as it boosts immunity and staves off cancer, cardiovascular disease, thyroid problems, cognitive decline, infertility, and asthma. If its new to you, or youre just looking for more information, here are some things you should know.

Whether you get it through a supplement or by eating certain foods that well identify below, here are the recommended daily dietary allowances for selenium:

An overdose from consuming selenium in food is unlikely but one is more possible when taking selenium in supplements.

You can consume selenium via supplement, but can also find it in the following foods:

Studies published in the British Journal of Urology, Biological Trace Element Research, and Journal of Veterinary Research indicate that taking selenium supplements may increase testosterone levels and enhance male fertility.

Specifically, one 26-week study involving 468 men with infertility who took 200 mcg of selenium together with N-acetyl-cysteine daily showed increased testosterone production, sperm count, and sperm quality. In addition, asecond study involving 690 men with infertility who took 200 mcg of selenium together with 400 units of Vitamin E showed improved sperm motility and appearance in 53% of participants after just 100 days. Eleven percent of the men in that study got their partners pregnant.

Brazil nuts have also been linked with boosted testosterone levels as a result their high levels of naturally occurring selenium. Just one 28-gram serving of Brazil nuts provide 988% of the daily recommended dietary allowance of selenium.

Brazil nuts offer all kinds of positive health effects: boosts to antioxidants; support of thyroid function; theyre high in heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats; they have protective effects on the brain and mood-elevating properties; they may decrease blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity; and reduced inflammation.

Researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, University of South Dakota, and Texas A&M Univesity have experimented with supplementing the diets of farmed Nile tilapia with organic and non-organic selenium.

As it turns out, supplementing the fishs diet with organic selenium helps maintain their health. It also produced fish with higher concentrations of the beneficial mineral to be consumed by people. Its a potential win-win and a big deal, since aquaculture has shown the capacity to help respond to worldwide malnutrition.

Ongoing research has suggested that selenium can have positive effects on or help prevent immune health, cancer, cardiovascular disease, thyroid problems, cognitive decline, infertility, and asthma.

If you stay within those recommended daily dietary allowances, you should experience no negative side effects from selenium consumption. Going beyond recommended doses, however can be a problem. These are some signs of selenium toxicity:

Selenium can interact with other medicines and supplements, so you should always keep in mind what else youre consuming to avoid any negative complications. Things that Selenium can interact with include antacids, chemotherapy drugs, corticosteroids, niacin, statins to lower cholesterol, and birth control pills.

There have been studies indicating a relationship between Selenium supplements and an increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma (skin cancer). If youre already at high risk of developing skin cancer, avoid taking Selenium supplements.

Keto diet and alcohol: Best drinks and what to avoid – Medical News Today

The ketogenic, or keto, diet is a high fat, low carbohydrate diet that offers the potential benefit of losing weight while maintaining muscle.

Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy. When a person consumes fewer food sources containing carbs, the liver breaks down fat reserves in the body into chemicals called ketones.

When the body uses these ketones for energy, the body goes into a state of ketosis, resulting in weight loss.

Most alcoholic beverages contain carbs, although some drinks contain a lot more than others. Choosing alcoholic drinks with fewer carbs can help a person remain within the daily limits of the keto diet.

This article looks at some keto-friendly alcoholic drinks. We also look at which drinks to avoid on account of their high sugar and carb content.

Most keto diet plans recommend that people consume 2050 grams (g) of carbs per day. Meals and drinks must fit within this daily allowance.

There is no one version of the keto diet. Some may recommend avoiding alcohol altogether due to its carb content.

Not all alcohol contains the same amount of carbs, however. Beer and drinks with a lot of sugar contain the highest amount, while spirits contain none.

Some people might choose to have an alcoholic drink if it fits within their daily allowance, while others may decide to avoid it altogether.

Another thing to remember is that the body may use energy from alcohol before using ketones from body fat. This could potentially limit the effect of the diet.

People following a keto diet to treat a medical condition, such as diabetes or epilepsy, should avoid alcohol.

The sections below list some keto-friendly choices for low carb alcoholic drinks.

Champagne and sparkling wine contain an average of 4.68 g of carbs per glass.

So, enjoying a small glass to celebrate a special event should fit within most keto diet plans.

Although most beer contains a lot of carbs, there are some lighter options. For example, a pale lager contains an average of 5.81 g of carbs per can.

Choose a light beer to stay within carb limits for the day.

Both red and white wine contain relatively few carbs. There are about 4.7 g in a standard glass.

Dry wines have the lowest sugar content.

Spirits such as gin, whiskey, rum, and vodka contain 0 g of carbs.

Mixers often contain carbs, so people following a keto diet may wish to choose a low sugar or diet option.

Club soda and sparkling water contain no carbs. Mixers that contain artificial sweeteners are some other low carb options.

Energy drinks, juice, cola, and lemonade are all high in carbohydrates, however.

The sections below list some drinks that have a high sugar and carb content. People following a keto diet may wish to avoid these beverages.

An average 12 ounce can of beer contains 12.8 g of carbs.

A light beer is a better option for the keto diet.

A sugary cocktail may contain 46.67 g or more of carbs. This is almost the entire carb allowance for a day under the keto diet.

Flavored alcohols, such as peach schnapps, often contain a lot of sugar.

The fruit juice in a wine cooler can contain a lot of sugar. The average carb content in a glass of wine cooler is 13.6 g.

Diet cranberry juice is one fruit juice that contains less sugar, meaning fewer carbs.

Sangria usually contains wine, fruit juice, and a mixer, all of which contain carbs. A glass of sangria can contain up to 18.9 g of carbs.

The aim of the keto diet is for the body to be in a state of ketosis. Maintaining this state relies on following very specific dietary guidelines. If a person does not strictly follow these guidelines, the diet may not be effective.

Following the keto diet often requires a lot of willpower. Alcohol can affect decision making and could mean making the choice to eat or drink something that is not within the diet plan. A person may therefore choose to avoid alcohol if they think that it might cause them to break their diet.

If a person eats a meal containing a lot of carbs before drinking, it could reduce the effects of the alcohol. In contrast, those following a keto diet may feel drunk more quickly because they have not eaten carbs to absorb some of the alcohol.

Drinking alcohol carries some health risks. Guidance recommends drinking in moderation, which is up to two drinks per day for men and one for women.

For people following a keto diet, choose an alcoholic drink that is low in carbs to stay within the limits of the diet.

Beer and cocktails can contain a lot of carbs and may take the body out of ketosis. This can make the diet less effective. Wine and light beer are lower carb options. Spirits contain no carbs, but be sure to choose a low calorie mixer.

Remember that alcohol can affect judgment and willpower. Drinking can also have more of an effect on the body when a person is following a keto diet.

Israeli Company Looks to Digitize Diet Tracking and Vitamin Intake With Smart Dispenser – Algemeiner

Nutriccos countertop Smart Dispenser. Photo: Courtesy.

A new cloud-based countertop smart device developed in Israel will dispense personalized nutrition supplements based on data it receives from a diet tracking app.

After analyzing the data tracked in the app, Nutricco provides supplement recommendations, which are then automatically delivered to the customers home as part of a monthly subscription.

The idea is not to promote supplements, but to encourage users to have a complete diet, Nutriccos CEO and co-founder Leonid Pirogovsky told The Algemeiner. We are providing the tools for smart decision making.

Nutricco, founded in 2018 and based in Raanana, has three components: a diet and health tracking application, a countertop Smart Dispenser and a monthly supplement subscription. That subscription includes expert health analysis, taking into consideration factors such as diet, climate, and lifestyle, as well as monthly supplements. The technology was a finalist at this years FoodTechIL competition in Tel Aviv.

December 19, 2019 4:18 pm

Based on your lifestyle profile, we recommend how to create a nutritional balance, Pirogovsky said.

While Nutricco does not seek to promote nutritional supplements over a healthy diet, there are many who consume them in an uninformed or unhealthy way.

About 160 million people take supplements daily, Pirogovsky noted, and many dont know exactly what they are taking or why.

The market today is controlled by supplement consumption, he said, which can not only be dangerous, but a waste of money.

The app first provides recommendations for a healthy diet, and if thats not sufficient, we offer solutions to close those nutritional gaps, Pirogovsky said. If you dont eat fish, for example, we might recommend that you take omega-3 supplements.

But, the app also provides government health department recommendations to avoid replacing essential diet components with pills.

Chavi Kramer, a dietician and nutrition expert in Tel Aviv, acknowledged she was not against recommending diet supplements, depending on the reason.

While Kramer would not recommend nutritional supplements to everyone, she said the personalized smart model of Nutricco certainly had potential, especially for those with dietary restrictions.

I dont believe that people should be going straight to supplements as a default, and ideally we should be obtaining these nutrients from food, Kramer told The Algemeiner.

The members of the team behind the concept have backgrounds with some of Israels largest pharmaceutical companies, such as Teva, and noticed that while many diet-tracking apps were available, a personalized end-to-end solution was missing on the market.

It is time for people to be able to manage their health and nutrition the same personal way they manage their bank account or any other aspect of their life, with innovative technology, Pirogovsky told The Algemeiner.

In our day and age, said Kramer, people are using apps for literally everything including music, socializing, supermarket shopping and banking so it makes sense that food and health have entered this realm as well. She added that digital health tools were empowering individuals to make their own decisions and enabling everyone to have access to certain information that was out of reach previously.

There are competitive products on the market, but Nutriccos patented Smart Dispenser is unique in its ability to hold up to eight supplements and in their original packaging, and provide a personalized experience for more than one person simultaneously.

Our machine is designed for the user, said Pirogovsky.

Still, Kramer explained that users needed to be cautious in selecting the right tools as some of these may be based on incorrect information, and the constant access to nutrition information and diet tracking could result in obsessive behavior.

Nutricco will launch its three-component platform in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas alongside the Israeli Export Institute, where it will announce the high-profile supplement providers it has partnered with to provide the last step in their end-to-end model.

With an initial launch in the US, the price of the Smart Dispenser will be $399, and the subscription for personalized analysis and supplements will cost $50 per month.

Down the road, Pirogovsky hopes Smart Dispensers will not only be in homes all over the world, but in public spaces like offices and gyms.

Anti-Inflammatory DietFacts About Anti-Inflammatory Foods and What to Avoid – Parade

Before you start the anti-inflammatory diet, you should understand exactly what it is. Inflammation is a necessary mechanism of our immune systems, which evolved at a time when it would need to respond to acuteinsults such as infections. But today, our immune systemsare responding to our diets and lifestyles, and this has unintended consequences, including tissue damage, says Max Lugavere, New York Times best-selling author of Genius Foods. An anti-inflammatory diet attempts to steer the body from a chronically inflamed state to one with healthy levels of inflammation. While things like regular exercise, proper sleep and stress management can also play a role, experts say diet can be a crucial aspect in keeping our bodies free of dangerous levels of chronic inflammation. Here are 26 things to know about the anti-inflammatory diet and some tips on how you can incorporate elements of it into your lifestyle:

Related: What Is the Anti-Inflammatory Diet and What Foods Can You Eat On It?

When the body is injured or ill, the lymphatic (immune) system springs into action, bringing the immune systems army of white blood cells to the area of concern via increased blood flow, explains Dr. Josh Axe, founder ofAncient Nutrition. He notes that inflammation in a healthy body is the normal and effective response that facilitates healing, like when a cut becomes red, painful or swollen.

According to Dr. Axe, when the immune system overreaches and begins attacking healthy body tissues, were met with an autoimmune disorder and inflammation in otherwise healthy areas of the body. Inflammatory effects also are linked to arthritis andfibromyalgia symptoms, as well as celiac and irritable bowel disease (IBD), he explains, adding that, asthma creates inflamed airways; inflammation related to diabetes affects insulin resistance; and so on.

Dr. Sears is president of the non-profit Inflammation Research Foundation, andauthor of the Zone Diet book series (which now includes his newest release, The Resolution Zone).

As a report from the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases stated: While todays modern diet may provide beneficial protection from micro- and macronutrient deficiencies, our over abundance of calories and the macronutrients that compose our diet may all lead to increasedinflammation, reduced control of infection, increased rates of cancer, and increased risk for allergic and auto-inflammatory disease.

Drying your hands is as important as washing them. Wet hands transmit bacteria more easily, so especially during cold and flu season, take the time to dry them thoroughly.

Dr. AndrewWeil, author of 8 Weeks to Optimum Healthand the creator of the Anti-Inflammatory Diet, tells Parade.com that he based his program on the Mediterranean diet, due to the evidence-backed general health benefits on it. I tweaked that by adding Asian influences to it because Ive spent a lot of time in Asia and Ive drawn on Asian cuisine. So adding such things as ginger and turmeric and green tea and Asian mushrooms, for example, he explains.

You can have occasional servings of lean meat, eggs, and small dairyas well as small amounts of chocolate and wine! Check out Dr. Weils Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid for the recommended servings of each.

The most important tip is to avoid refined, processed, and manufactured foods, explains Dr. Weil. Thats whats doing us in. Thats whats causing most problems, so the more you can eliminate that from your diet, the better.

Weil adds that you will be doing your body a massive favor if you eat foods that are as close to the way nature produces them as possible.

Weil would recommend that everyone prioritizes eating in a low inflammatory mannerI think it gives you your best shot at overall health and longevity, since the most serious diseases that do people in as they get older are rooted in chronic inappropriate inflammation. So I think by following that, thats really your best overall health strategy, he explains. But per the expert, people with inflammatory disorders like arthritis, autoimmune diseases, etc. may especially benefit from it.

Coffeeand tea are generally considered anti-inflammatoryits with what we adulterate these beverages that can swing these beverages into inflammatory territory, says MonicaAuslanderMoreno, MS, RD, LD/N, nutrition consultant forRSP Nutrition.

The journal Oncogene published the results of a study that evaluated several anti-inflammatory compounds. It found that aspirin (Bayer, etc.) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.) are least potent, while curcumin is among the most potent anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative agents in the world, says Dr. Axe.

She says that fruits and vegetables containbeneficialpolyphenolssuch as anthocyanin, which have powerful antioxidant effects and that diets high in fruits and vegetables provide vitaminsC and E, which may provide protective antioxidanteffects.

Studies show that diets with better ratios of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids may provide protective cardiovascularbenefits, says Crean. She cites that good sources of dietaryomega-3 fatty acids include: fattyfish such as salmon, mackereland herringaim for 2 servings a weekand advocates for limiting dietary sources of omega-6 fatty acids like soybean oil, sunflower oil and corn oil.

A crucial component of warding off inflammation, per Dr. Weil, is to keep your sugar intake low. Also pay attention to the fructose content of various sweeteners because the body cant handle fructose well and it disrupts metabolism, he says.

It would be good for people to reduce the percentage of animal foods in the diet. I think that North Americans eat much too much meat, beef especially, and too many animal foods. So replacing some of that with plant proteins is a good strategy, he explains.

Aim for a wide variety of vegetables, incorporate them into as many meals as possible, and include as many different colors as you can get, says Dr. Weil.

Weil says grains are absolutely OK, as long as you are eating the right kinds. I think grains are good food if theyre not processed, but theres a big difference between whole grains or cracked grains and polarized grains/flour, he says. If I ask most people to name a whole grain food, theyll say whole wheat bread. And thats not a whole grain foods. Its made from flour. So limit the processed ones and opt for rice, wild rice, quinoa, barley, millet and buckwheat instead.

Related: 12 Nutritious Quinoa Salads for Simple Meals

There are many foods that are allowed on the diet plan and Dr. Weil encourages you to get creative. For instance, he often eats smoked fish and whole grain toast, or even a salad for breakfast. You can have fish frequently, especially salmon and black cod and other fish that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. I like good soy foodstempeh, tofu, edamame. And those are examples of good quality vegetable protein foods. There are many vegetable preparations. Pasta is fine as long as its cooked al dente and not in huge quantities with not creamy, buttery sauces. And a lot of the ethnic foods like Asian, Middle Eastern, and Japanese are filled with healthy spices and great ingredients, he says.

Weil says as a rule of thumb, its a good idea to avoid foods prepared by other people, fast food, and stuff from the middle of the supermarketthe highly-processed stuff. He adds that if ingredients can barely fit on the label, you dont want to eat it; if they are too many things there, you dont know what they are, its a pass. Think about if youre going to make this at home, what ingredients you would use? And if there are too many other things beyond that, dont use them.

There are some good prepared foods out there, he explains, noting that he buys Gyoza potstickers from Trader JoesI often cook them with broccoli and thats a quick, easy mealas well as American Flatbread pizzas from Whole Foods.

per Jim Frith, author of End the Yo-Yo; the EAMAYW System and advanced sports nutrition specialist, are: darkly pigmented berries, stone fruits, cruciferous vegetables, citrus fruits, beets, green tea, probiotics, kelp, avocado, nuts, free-range eggs and olive oil.

per Global Master Chef Karl Guggenmos, senior culinary advisor at Healthy Meals Supreme, include: refined carbohydrates, processed meats, sugary drinks, refined added sugars, excessive alcohol consumption and processed conventional snack items.

Its really an eating plan for life and its not in any way meant to reduce the pleasure of eating, says Weil. I think above all, eating should be pleasurable and it is possible to have good food that meets the requirements of the anti-inflammatory diet, he adds.

Curious about the pegan diet? Weve got the scoop.

Why I Refuse to Diet in a World Obsessed With Dieting – POPSUGAR

Since childhood, I've known that I didn't have the stick-thin body type you see in magazines. It never used to bother me until other people decided that it bothered them. At 12, I was body shamed by two drunk middle-aged women at an amusement park, as I stood next to my identical twin sister. In the fifth grade, my class was weighed at the beginning and end of the year; I grew four inches taller and gained a decent amount of weight, which led to some harsh whispers. Now, at 27, I'm still getting used to my body, but I no longer let the opinions of other people dictate how I feel about myself.

About a year ago, I upped my dosage of an anti-anxiety medication to help counter increasingly persistent symptoms of anxiety and OCD. With the higher dose came some weight gain, and it was shocking to say the least. None of my clothes fit the way they were supposed to. I couldn't wear my favorite jeans and dresses anymore. Stretch marks seemed to pop up overnight around my stomach. And at first, I panicked. I skipped birthday parties and other outings to avoid having a meltdown every time I got dressed. I stopped trying to look cute because I didn't feel like myself anymore. I allowed my weight to determine my value.

Fortunately, this panic and self-loathing didn't last. After a few weeks of feeling miserable, I was fed up with the person I had become. This wasn't who I wanted to be. I didn't want to be the girl who sat at home instead of meeting up with friends because of a number on the scale. I didn't want to hate myself so much that I forgot how to live. I had wasted so much time obsessing over my body that I forgot what I had: family, friends, a roof over my head, and, equally important, a body that works, regardless of its size. Instead of relishing in what I had, I was allowing myself to drown in self-doubt. I decided then and there that instead of dieting to fit into my old clothes, I would buy new clothes I liked even better. Instead of trying to get back to the weight I was before, I would let my body be.

Today, I'm no longer that panicked and heartbroken girl. I no longer isolate myself because of my weight. At the end of the day, it's just a number, and one that will change throughout my life. There's nothing to gain from allowing something so fleeting to define your self-worth. So, instead of dieting and trying to shrink the parts of you that you hate, I hope you'll join me in celebrating your body. There's no one else on this earth that has it, or your generosity, or your sense of humor, or your heart.

It's so easy to judge yourself against magazine covers and filtered photos on Instagram, but every curve and roll and stretch mark tells a story of what you've gone through and how far you've come. Embrace those so-called flaws, because they make you uniquely you, and only serve to showcase your strength and resilience.

How to lose weight & get fit like this 40-year-old who lost 20 kgs after not being able to do even one push up – GQ India – What a man’s got to do

The most common misconception regarding weight loss and healthy eating is that you will have to give up on a significant chunk of your social life to be able to follow a weight loss routine or a healthy diet. But, this is a myth. And, to debunk this myth, 40-year-old Brijesh Kumar shares his inspiring weight loss journey from 100 kgs to 80 kgs that didnt devoid him from living his best life.

I was always bulky, fat but not obese. Actually, you wouldnt have even noticed fat on my body other than when my big love handles would protrude from fitting t-shirts! he says.

I have also lived a very happy life I was never fat-shamed or made felt bad about my weight and a happy life and good food come hand in hand! You are not counting calories when you are happy, you are busy counting what's left of your pocket money to spend on food! he adds.

After college, I landed up in the offshore oil industry, and here the food was beyond amazing, comprising 2 vegetarian dishes, 2 meat dishes, chapatis, rice, ice creams, sweets, starters and the whole works that you get at any hotel buffet. The ready availability of so much good food led to a slow but constant increase in my girth. Consequently, my t-shirt size grew from large to XXL. But I was happy and it was still all smooth sailing I got married and now have a wonderful kid with my wife, he informs. In fact, my work allowed me (still does) to enjoy brief periods of breaks every now and then, so when I was not travelling from work, my family and I were enjoying great food everyday. I am from Cochin, so lunches and dinners comprised great Malabari food, chats, North Indian dinners, Shawarmas, Kerala Porotta and Beef (this combination is not just food for us but an emotion), Biryanis and everything under the sun! So, fitness was not even remotely on my mind until I turned 33 actually. I couldnt even do a single push up shortly before turning 33.

Coming back to my point, at 33, I wanted to buy this one specific t-shit from an online brand, and they didnt have my size XXL I guess this is an issue many XXL-sized guys and girls face. So my fitness journey actually started with me wanting to fit into a smaller sized t-shirt. I was a confident big guy and I decided to take on the one thing that was stopping me from wearing my favourite tees being FAT!

Kumar tells us that when he commenced his weight loss journey, he had just tipped the scale at 100 kgs. Below, he highlights the weight loss plan that help him lose 20 kgs and also get ripped.

Walking came first, with my wife as my walking partner, but then food always took the recliner seat and nutrition was in the front most row (practically thats where no one wants to sit in the theatre!)."

"Then a cycling fad took over us, we bought a cycle and I used to cycle 2528 kms daily. When I started noticing changes on the weighing scale, I cut down on my regular snacking habit a little bit. This continued for about a year and then my wife suggested me to join a gym and try some personal training.

So on a cold January day in 2015, at the age of 35, I joined a gym and was assigned a personal trainer. This was the workout routine that I followed under his guidance":

"I'd workout 6 days/week, comprising a 50-75 minutes weight training (Push, Pull Legs routine) followed by a 30-45 minutes of cardio routine brisk walking or elliptical. "

Push days would include:Bench presses, dumbbell presses, cable flys, push ups, shoulder presses, lat raises, tricep exercises, etc.

Pull days would include:Lat pull downs, single arm rows, seated rows, pull-ups and bicep exercises.

Leg days would include:Squats, leg presses, extensions and deadlifts.

Because of the sudden increase in daily activity, my body started to respond positively. Luckily, my trainer was someone who took form and posture very seriously and that helped me greatly later on. I continued with this gym routine for a year and also began experimenting with my fitness regime. I got help from an online coach as well. They helped me streamline my workout routine with proper nutrition and diet guidelines that resulted in this natural transformation.

I followed an extremely enjoyable diet plan in the sense that my daily diet didn't rob me of my social life. My initial meals included eggs and fruit for breakfast then pulses curry with chapati and salad for lunch. Tea with sugar and milk for evening snacks and chicken, 2 chapati and salad for dinner.

After a month, I switched to the below diet to keep up with my body's changing needs.

Breakfast: 5 egg whites and 300 gms of watermelon or muskmelon

Lunch: 200 gms of chicken/fish + 1 chapati + 200 gms of curd and salad

Evening Snacks: Milk coffee/tea + 300 gms of papaya or watermelon

Dinner : 200 gms chicken + 2 chapati + salads

I would actually like to share a pro tip here: remember that all the foods that you feed your body are essentially just calories. The body doesn't differentiate between rice or bread or chapati. Nor does it differentiate between a ladoo and lettuce. The common misconception is that the body differentiates between good calories and bad calories, it doesn't store calories from a laddoo in the abdomen and from chicken in your muscles. Every food is just calories for the body, some give more some give less. If you feed your body with excess calories then it will use what is required and store the remaining as fat. If you understand this concept then your diet will be more enjoyable and also sustainable.

On my own journey, I understood the two basic concepts of calories and weight training. In a caloric deficit state, that is when you feed your body with fewer calories than it requires to run its functions every day, it will try to eliminate or reduce the high maintenance items like muscles. It is our duty to actually trick the body into thinking that the muscles are required to do extra work and they need to be kept. This is where weight training comes into play. Weight training is nothing but a way to artificially give muscles added stress so that the body spares the muscles and uses the fat to compensate for the energy deficit.

My body transformation has been all natural, I have taken no BCAA, no fat burners, no Creatine, no L-Carnitine, no Aminos coffee was my only pre-workout boost! I sincerely hope my journey inspires those who think that they are too old to do this, age is just a number.
