The ‘great joy’ to be found in the 2020 fitness trends – Sydney Morning Herald

I see health-focused trends rising and gimmicks falling, Phillips says. This list is such an insight into what role fitness plays for society. It's not just about looking good, staying slim, getting fit and gaining muscle, as once pigeonholed, but now is viewed as a much broader approach to health.

Loading

"This year's trends indicate that we are looking to fitness to support mental health, community, connection, disease prevention and innovation.

The rise of wellness coaching, for example, which uses behavioural science and positive psychology to support physical and mental health, suggests a growing interest in how our mind and body work together, Phillips says.

EIM (exercise is medicine) is climbing too, along with exercise for older adults. These trends all have a strong health focus which is really encouraging to see.

Libby Babet, the founder of BUF Girls and former trainer on the Biggest Loser, is equally enthusiastic.

Usually when I look at the top 20 I do a bit of an eye-roll at a few fads or quick-fix trends, but this year everything in the top 20 is things I feel get real results, she says.

We're all a bit more clued in on health and fitness these days, society as a whole is more informed and more curious about what works.

I think this is because we're all a bit more clued in on health and fitness these days, society as a whole is more informed and more curious about what works.

The continued trend of wearable tech (it has been number one since 2016) reflects its continued innovation.

Wearable tech is just getting better and better, isn't it? Most devices aren't just clocking your energy spent or distance covered anymore, they're monitoring your health and wellbeing and really getting to know you and how your body is adapting. They've become a real guide, says Babet, who favours the Apple Watch.

Founder of Flow Athletic, Ben Lucas says a trend towards active transport is also driving the popularity of wearables.

Loading

People are doing more incidental exercise today (walking, cycling) and they like to have a benchmark to hit, Lucas says. Also the element of gamification (movement streaks, competing against friends) keeps consumers engaged.

Despite the technology trend, mobile exercise apps are on the decline. Lucas attributes this to the lack of accountability and impetus they provide to exercise.

It is so easy to register, download, sign up but it will just sit there on your phone if you dont open it and take the time to commit to the program, he says. [Its] the same reason that people have exercise equipment at home that goes unused, they are not missing a means to exercise, they are looking for motivation to get it done.

People still value the face-to-face connection gained through social fitness as well as the desire to exercise in a different location.

In that way I dont ever believe that group exercise and personal training will ever completely go out of fashion. Having the accountability to someone else and the inspiration from a group setting will help you commit and get results.

Phillips agrees that the social aspect is crucial for many people.

People still value the face-to-face connection gained through social fitness as well as the desire to exercise in a different location (be it outdoors or the gym), she says. I am a big believer in combining fitness with fun and friends, so to see group fitness still in the top three makes me smile. Jane Fonda was really onto something wasn't she!?

11 Best Fitness Trackers and Watches for Women in 2020 – GoodHousekeeping.com

amazon

If you need help meeting your health and exercise goals, then a reliable fitness tracker might be the extra push you're looking for. In fact, results from a past Good Housekeeping survey found that 75% of people said using a fitness tracker helped improve their motivation to work out. But with so many different options on the market, it can be hard to figure out which one is right for you and your budget.

The experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute's Media and Tech Lab have tested and evaluated dozens of popular fitness trackers over the years in categories including ease of use, battery life, accuracy, comfort, and more. Our recommendation for the best overall fitness tracker is the Fitbit Versa 2. Across the board, Fitbits consistently come out on top in our tests, so it's no surprise that many of the brand's devices made the cut for this list of the best fitness trackers for women. The rest of our fitness tracker recommendations include new models from brands we've also tested and trust to be solid performers, along with a couple best-selling trackers with rave reviews on Amazon.

When shopping for fitness trackers and watches, our experts recommend looking for a few specific features. The best options will have a step counter, heart rate monitor, and a sleep tracker. It's also important to consider battery life, especially if you're the type of person who won't remember to charge your watch every night. If reading texts and getting notifications is also something you're looking for, make sure the tracker you choose has that capability (and a large enough screen!). Some people aren't interested in heart rate or text notifications, so a simpler tracker will suffice if you're just looking to burn more calories from walking.

How to Use Friendship to Reach Your Fitness Goals – Thrive Global

Like many fitness professionals, celebrity trainer Luke Milton first fell in love with exercise on the playing field. Miltons career began as a professional rugby player in Australia. After retiring from rugby, Milton realized he needed a new outlet, so he founded Training Mate in Sydney, Australia, and quickly established himself as a leader in the fitness community, and a trainer on E!s Revenge Body. Milton says that a healthy lifestyle is a combination of physical, social and mental health, and he tells Thrive that one of the most important first steps on a fitness journey is finding a mate do it with you.

Here, Milton reveals how companionship and a positive inner dialogue can help you work towards your fitness goals, and enable you to enjoy the journey.

Thrive Global: What advice would you give someone to mentally reframe how they view working out?

Luke Milton: We have to retrain our brains and perception of exercise and working out. For far too long, the media has trained us to think that exercise is a punishment for making poor lifestyle decisions, when in fact, exercise and fitness is a reward that should be cherished and enjoyed. When we change our inner monologue and start saying statements like, I cant wait to go for a walk or a run, and constantly remind ourselves of the amazing feelings we have as a result of exercise, the quicker we can view it as a luxury and not a chore.

TG: What tips do you have for someone to incorporate movement into their day?

LM: Firstly, find a mate someone you can hold accountable and be accountable to. As human beings, we tend to let ourselves down before we let anyone else down. So find your mate and explore common interests. That could be golf, tennis, hiking, swimming whatever, just move your body consistently. If you, like millions of others, use the statement, Im just too busy, start taking your meetings as walking meetings. Get a standing desk or prepare for travel by selecting hotels with exercise centers.

TG: What tips would you give someone to motivate them to workout?

LM: Motivation can come from so many places. For this, I recommend having a positive vocabulary: always reinforcing the positives of exercise. Remind yourself how great you will feel and how accomplished youll feel during and after the workout. If you are externally motivated, look no further than your own home; it has been proven over and over again that consistent exercise helps you to achieve a healthy lifestyle, and keeps you more energetic for your kids, husband or wife, or your mates.

TG: Why dont fitness resolutions stick?

LM: I truly believe that most fitness resolutions dont stick because there isnt enough intrinsic motivation associated with them. Most resolutions state absolutes, as in, Im giving up drinking, or Im going to the gym every day, instead of, Im excited to move more, I cant wait to see my mate at tennis, etc. Success comes from small, consistent changes, not huge, scary plans that set you up for failure.

TG: When do fitness resolutions stick?

LM: Fitness resolutions work when we set small, consistent and attainable goals. When we make fitness a part of our lifestyle, it becomes just another thing we do, like brushing your teeth or taking out the trash. Its not about being perfect, its about being consistent.

To Start the New Year Successfully, Incorporate Your Fitness Goals Into Your Holiday Wish List – Thrive Global

If you want to mentally reframe how you view fitness, start with small, attainable, and sustainable wins. Last year I committed to drink a glass of water every morning before eating or drinking anything else. It will help to rehydrate you after sleep and start you with a healthy habit first thing! I keep one by my bed to make it an easy reminder.

We all want real results, real fast but shift your focus to the inside too, not just the way you look. Find a workout that improves how you feel in your own skin. Do you feel strong, empowered, accomplished? That is a big motivation factor!

Relatives asking what they can get you for a holiday gift? Make it something that motivates you to move! A new sports bra? Sneakers? A package of classes to your favorite studio? Make it something you want to use and will support your health during and after the holidays!

Here are my top 3 tips for incorporating movement into your day:

1) Consistency is key! Make moving your body part of your routine every day. Cant make it to the gym? Take a walk. Do plank holds get your blood moving even for 15 min and your body and spirit will thank you!

2) Compound movements work head to toe for more calorie burning and faster results. Think lunges with light dumbbells or a resistance band. No dumbbells? Use soup cans!

3) Keep the weight light for long lean lines while you still get improved definition, calorie burn, and bone strengthening work! It doesnt have to be heavy to blast fat and create lean muscle.

Here are three sneaky ways to work in movement during daily activities:

My favorite one is while doing dishes! How many of us get that little tiny hole at the front lower edge of t shirts? Its from rubbing up/leaning on the sink!! To tone your core AND improve low back pain while doing dishes (washing bottles) at the sink heres my best advice:

Stuck at the desk? Place your feet flat on the floor with knees just in front of ankles and imprint the entire soles of your feet down think about the bones reaching through the floor as your muscles draw up like a pair of pants. Find that deep low belly connection and legs working while you type!

In line at Trader Joes? Place your feet with heels together and toes turned out. Without changing your height at all (this is how you can do it without stars from your shopping mates!) softly bend your knees. This activates a deep core connection because your body is reaching up as knees bend down in opposition. Tones booty, inner thighs, pelvic floor and belly!

Here are my tips for workout motivation:

Starting your day with your workout. Its easy to get wrapped up in the festivities and put your wellness on the back burner so make it your first priority before the rest of your day happens and youll be so glad you did!

Schedule your classes in advance. Naturally during the holiday season, studios tend to fill up faster! make sure you book in advance to save your spot & use it as motivation to get in & get it done!

Pilates in particular has a variety of mental benefits.

Pilates requires focus and attention to the present moment, and often uses lots visualization cues to help you find the best form. Being present in the room becomes a form of meditation without having to sit still and silent. You may notice yourself yawning in class sometimes this is due to your Central Nervous System (CNS) down training in class. We often have so much going on in our lives that taking time for a Pilates class helps us mentally and physically to re-center. One of the greatest rewards of this work is walking into your workout stressed and hunched forward and 45 minutes later walking out with a smile, standing tall and feeling amazing!

Why dont fitness resolutions stick?

I dont believe in resolutions at all! EVERY single day is a new day and an opportunity to establish a healthy habit. Dont wait for the calendar to tell you when to take care of yourself. If you start off strong but get off track by February 7th, start again! Every day is a new day!! Aiming for a specific weight? Nonsense. A scale = data and nothing more. Are you feeling strong and empowered and good in your own skin? Thats the goal! Is the food you ate today fueling a feeling of wellness? Did it have ingredients from nature that help you feel satisfied and strong? That is far more powerful and doable than any diet.

When do fitness resolutions stick?

1) Sustainability, do more than youre doing now and schedule your workouts into your calendar. Work at your level consistently 3 4x week if possible, and move on your non-Pilates days in a way that you love hike, bike, swim, walk etc.

2) Make every exercise a compound movement add props whenever offered like the ring, resistance band, ball, or weights.

Local fitness studio for all abilities is rebranding – Patch.com

TAMPA, Fla. Tampa's first exercise training studio owned and operated by a trainer with autism is getting a brand new look.

Puzzle Piece Fitness is now Equally Fit. Owner and operator Mark Fleming says his business is here to stay; the personal exercise studio dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities will still operate at its same location on Race Track Road in Tampa, but the gym is getting a new, more inclusive logo.

"The goal of the rebranding is to have a logo and overall design that better reflects our mission and principles," said Fleming. "I want to make it clear that my fitness studio is a place where people of all abilities are welcome."

Fleming opened his groundbreaking gym in February, launching a media firestorm that spread throughout the country. Fleming appeared on numerous websites, blogs, web shows, local and regional TV news interviews, and was even profiled in an article by CNN.

Fleming attributes his success to his unique style of personal training, which focuses on improving the overall health of his clients.

"We do not consider this to be a typical disability kind of therapy," said Fleming. "Exercise is a therapy that everybody in life should participate in and is life long, thus there are no "graduation" achievement milestones. I also want to be a person that these individuals can turn to, so they can see they are not alone or helpless."

Living with autism gives Fleming a unique perspective on his clients' needs, helping him provide one-of-a-kind adaptive fitness training through his continually growing business.

Equally Fit will hold a One Year/Rebranding Celebration at 12651 Race Track Road on Saturday, January 18th, 2020 from 2:00-5:00 PM. You can learn more about the event and Fleming's fitness studio at https://www.facebook.com/equallyfittampa.

Residents planning to set New Years resolutions like eating healthier, losing weight or training to run a marathon can turn to Henry Mayo Fitness and Health staff for help in achieving their goals.

For those who want to transform their diet but dont know where to start to ensure they are getting the right amount of calories and nutrition, Henry Mayo Fitness and Health staff can help navigate that for you, according to Sharlene Duzick, member services director.

A lot of folks just go to standard ratios of 1,300 calories or less and they dont realize that theyre not eating enough coinciding with their workouts, Duzick said. So we try to provide that infrastructure internally and give you those tools to be successful.

Similarly, those with fitness goals large and small can receive guidance on how best to realistically implement a structured training program with their goal in mind, Duzick added.

In January, Henry Mayo Fitness and Health staff are set to hold a monthly trainer workshop called Healthier You, where people can receive this kind of individualized assistance, according to Duzick.

We always go through goal setting every year, and so for those individuals that are (thinking), Im going to run a marathon, lets talk about what that looks like, Duzick said. Lets break that down into your daily schedule, or then your weekly schedule, make sure that youre doing the miles, that youre on the injury prevention side and you can obtain your end in mind, which is crossing the finish line.

In addition to this monthly program, Duzick noted that Henry Mayo Fitness and Health staff offer four appointments with a trainer to new members to help get them started on achieving their fitness goals.

The first appointment is a health risk assessment, when the trainer discusses past injuries, medical conditions, current medications and more, according to Duzick.

We want to make sure were doing whats right for you where youre at physically and health-wise, she said.

Next, a functional movement screen is conducted to evaluate the physical state of the body, looking at things like flexibility, balance, muscle strength, endurance and asymmetries that might cause dysfunction or discomfort, Duzick continued.

The third meeting helps the new member get acquainted with their strength and cardio, and the fourth meeting is typically a 90- to 120-day followup.

We try to be pretty thorough, Duzick said. One of the biggest inhibitors is, Where do I start? So providing them that infrastructure of those four appointments goes, Look, heres a road map, heres a guide, heres to start off with, and then when you go to the goal-setting workshop, we actually break that down into, What does your daily schedule look like, or your weekly and monthly, and what are your goals?

Duzick concluded, So lets talk about those steps that will get you closer to doing the things that you want to do.

How New Moms Can Achieve their New Year’s Fitness Resolutions – Thrive Global

Sara Haley, one of Americas most sought after pre & postnatal exercise specialists, and a certified instructor and trainer with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), has a true passion for educating women. Her specialty is helping moms-to-be stay motivated, inspired, and fit throughout their pregnancy and beyond. As a mom herself, she also uses her own experiences and tools to help women discover their own interests beyond motherhood, and find new and creative ways to connect with their kids and themselves.

Haley shares her unique approach to New Years resolutions with Thrive, and shows us how we can set goals without sacrificing the things that are important to us.

Set an early alarm clock

Waking up early is hard, and I know youve heard it before, but it might just be whats holding you back from meeting your fitness goals. If youre one to say that you just dont have time in your day to workout, you might just have to make time that hasnt been there before: set an alarm, go to bed earlier, and remember that doesnt have to mean a whole hour earlier.

Get a better workout with less time

How do you do this? You have to push yourself more. By pushing yourself to lift heavier weights or get breathless during your workouts (unless you are pregnant), youll burn more calories in a shorter period of time. In fact, when I have less time, I feel even more focused because I know I have to get in and get out! If you want a little taste of how to make the most of your time, you can go here to download my free workout that will give you a great workout in just 5 minutes of work.

Consider a better-than-nothing workout

Something is always better than nothing. This is my fitness philosophy. I say this often because it is so true. If you cannot find time in the day to dedicate specifically to a workout, then squeeze in movement throughout your day. I have free workout videos for kitchen workouts, bath tub workouts, bedtime stretch routines, and more. Sneaking in a couple lunges while vacuuming or a push up here and there while playing on the floor with the baby is far better than doing nothing! I doubt youll ever go to bed saying, Oh, I really wish I hadnt done those 20 squats today, but I bet you might go to bed saying, I really wish I had moved my body more today.

Make a priority list

This one is hard because it requires you to be super honest with yourself. I challenge you to sit down and create a priority list of the top 5-10 things in your life. If fitness and movement isnt coming in high, that might be playing a big role in why you havent been fitting it in. When I did this exercise, I realized that I am not in a season of life where working out even makes it into my top five. And thats okay because I know its just for now. I love to move my body and making this list helped me recognize that moving my body is best done when I can do so with my family.

UFC Fighter Stephen Thompson On Partnering With AI-Fitness App Freeletics And How Technology Has Changed MMA – Forbes

UFC Fighter Stephen Thompson has partnered with AI-Fitness app Freeletics in looking to bring his ... [+] training program and techniques to the mainstream.

Technology affects sports in many ways, but its impact on athletes training habits and preferences has been particularly pronounced. For exercise beginners, working out and training effectively can be daunting and joining a gym for a personal trainer can be costly or difficult to fit into busy lives. As a result, having a virtual personal trainer, utilizing technology to bring expert training techniques straight to the home, is growing in popularity.

With the New Year around the corner, fitness-related businesses benefit from the infamous resolutions and one company in the fitness space is looking to take advantage. Freeletics is a free fitness app that adapts a users personal training preferences around their schedule, fitness level of experience and other personal goals to get in better cardiovascular shape. These can include losing weight or toning ones physique. There is also a paid component to the app as well.

The AI-based health and fitness app is announcing today a partnership with Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) fighter Stephen Wonderboy Thompson. By collaborating with the decorated fighter, users will benefit from Thompsons years of experience, taking advantage of his insights and techniques, which would cost hundreds of dollars per hour at a training facility or working out like a top MMA fighter. Thompsons workouts will be added to the over 900 variations of workouts within the app that allow athletes to train any muscle groups. Most of the workouts last between 10 to 25 minutes and can be adapted to an on-the-go lifestyle.

For Thompson, the brand association is a strong match, given his fighting background and family lineage. He was training and learning almost as soon as he started karate at the age three. He grew up in his family gym and has been learning fighting techniques and proper ways to train ever since. Ranked #8 in the UFC welterweight division, Thompson feels that he is a perfect fit for the AI-based training app as he can harness the companys message of turning people into a better version of themselves through his endless hours of fine-tuning his body. His kickboxing record is 57-0.

Im very excited about partnering with Freeletics and being able to partner with their growing platform, Thompson told me recently. I have had a lot of ups and downs in my career and I feel I strongly relate to many people out there looking to train and strive to be a better version of themselves through fitness.

The collaboration will feature a co-created Freeletics Training Journey, a 12-week personalized workout experience, aptly named Enter the Cage. The workout includes guides based on Thompsons own personal routine and can be tailored to individual fitness levels and body type. The Freeletics fitness coach utilizes AI to customize these training plans and to adjust them based on the feedback by each user after every single workout. All workouts are bodyweight-only HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and require no gym or equipment.

Thompson is also excited about the alignment with the AI-based fitness company as he has seen the impact technology has had on drastically changing the way athletes in his sport train and study their opponents.

Technology has certainly changed the game when it comes to training and how I have prepared recently as opposed to earlier in my career, Thompson said to me. I can now have lots of video of my opponent nearly instantly on my phone and I can track my personal cardio data at a level of detail that wasnt around when I first was getting started. I feel like technology plays a major role in all facets of how I train and prepare for fights.

Freeletics has grown exponentially since its founding in Germany in 2013. It is currently the top fitness app in Europe and alignment with athletes like Thompson, with a strong presence in the United States, should boost worldwide adoption. The company closed a $45 million round led by some of the industrys major players, such as FitLab, Causeway Media Partners, and JAZZ Venture Partners, with participation from Courtside Ventures, Elysian Park Ventures, Ward Ventures, and Tony Robbins. These investors are affiliated with several of the most influential professional sports franchises, including the San Francisco 49ers, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

It is a great milestone for Freeletics to embark on this journey with Stephen Wonderboy Thompson, said Freeletics CEO Daniel Sobhani in a statement on the partnership. By focusing on his unique training philosophy and strong personality, we will be able to provide even more training variety in our portfolio and serve new audiences with the inspiration, guidance, and education required to reach their long-term goals. We look forward to helping even more people pursue their health and fitness journey in the new year with such a talented athlete.

With technology changing every aspect of fitness training, it isnt surprising to see strong user growth by a number of the earlier startups in the space. To have access to training plans and the regiments of world-class athletes like Thompson, more athletes are likely to join platforms like Freeletics in an effort to make training more efficient and effective through technology.

Cutting-edge fitness gear for the home: 5 pieces we want right now – The San Diego Union-Tribune

The ongoing quest for health and fitness produces a constant stream of innovative new workout products, from new takes on old favorites to far-out new creations. Here are a few highlights from the Idea show held in Anaheim this summer, which means youll soon be seeing these at gyms, store shelves and smart screens.

Cutting-edge core

The EdgeCross-X. Invented by Agoura Hills teacher Steve Berman, this push-up bar with handles and a metal ball on each end blasts every muscle in your body with a new training modality he invented: off-balance leverage training.

Why we like it: This is a fitness revelation. EdgeCross-X, as promised, stresses numerous muscle groups by putting you off-balance with a pivot point far from the center of your body on the ball at the far ends of the bar. From the first second you start off with a simple push-up, your core gets blasted.

Double the fun

Ski-Row Air. A two-in-one workout machine from EnergyFit: a rowing machine that, repositioned vertically, converts into a lat-pull cable machine or cross-country skiing trainer.

Why we like it: Space-saving variety. You can row, work the arms in a cross-country ski motion or do lat pulls and other strength exercises. Includes wheels and a gas-assist cylinder to help lift the machine and lower it to the ground.

(Gorilla Fitness Equipment)

Beast mode

Gorilla Bow: Portable home gym that combines stretch cords with a pseudo-bow-hunting frame, claiming to produce between 5 and 300 pounds of resistance and allowing for a variety of strength exercises.

Why we like it: Its a nice new take on old stretch-band devices, providing a convenient do-anywhere workout that can target back, chest, arms, shoulders and legs with presses, pulls and squats.

The IntelliRoll is an intricately sculpted foam roller that specializes in massaging and lengthening the back.

(Chris Vicari)

Smart foam roller

IntelliRoll. An intricately sculpted foam roller that specializes in massaging and lengthening the back. A middle channel is designed to stop the vertebrae compression of a normal flat roller, while pronounced ridges work the spinal erectors.

Why we like it: It feels natural because the curved sections match the bodys own curves and distribute pressure more evenly over more muscle area. The chiropractor who invented it says the anatomical design can cut effective massage time in half while allowing a deeper release of the muscle fascia.

Cost: Starting at $29.95, intelliroll.com

(Powerplate )

Shake it, baby

The Power Plate Move. Home version of the companys health-club vibration plate, which has a cult following among those who like to put butter in their morning coffee.

Why we like it: Some research backs up benefits of vibration: increased range of motion, strength and muscle tone, balance, stability and circulation. The Move is easy to use, adjusts intensities smoothly and has an app offering guidance and classes.

Cost: $2,995, powerplate.com
