As 2019 comes to a close, we're taking a look back at the biggest health and wellness trends this year.
From certain diets to specialized products, the year has brought a variety of buzzy wellness trends.
Not only headlines have held the names of these wellness trends, celebrity social media posts have also promoted certain diets.
The keto diet, for example, has gotten praise from"Jersey Shore" star Vinny Guadagnino, which he credits for losing 50 pounds. And although they never directly referenceketo,Khloe Kardashian andVanessa Hudgens both credit their weight loss to a high fat, low carb diet.
We've rounded up some of the biggest headline-making trends, in no particular order:
Though vegan diets started creeping into the mainstream in the last couple of years, 2019 saw the biggest increase in vegan hype and headlines.
From plant-based fast food optionsbecoming available across the country, like Burger King's Impossible Whopper, to articles on how to vegan-ize your Thanksgiving, this year has brought veganism to the forefront.
And it's not only fast food other industries are taking note too.
In September, Walt Disney Worldannounced that it will begin offering hundreds of plant-based options for its park-goers at all of its major quick and table service restaurants. Vegan options are also coming to Disneyland in spring 2020.
Celebrities speaking up about veganism has also been prevalent this year, fromJaden Smith's ups and downs with the dietto pop newcomer Billie Eilish slamming Lady Gaga's meat dress.

Though the ketogenic diethas been around for a while, it was everywhere in 2019, from keto movie theater snacks to celebrity endorsements.
In the diet, carbs are ditched to make room for high-quality fats and proteins. After several days of strict adherence, the body pushes through a period of lethargy to arrive at ketosis. In this highly efficient metabolic state, you burn stored fat for fuel and those stubborn love handles finally fade away.
To enter ketosis, dieters need to be eating fewer than 50 grams of carbs a day for a few days while maintaining a diet that's high in fat.
Some celebrity endorsements include Vanessa Hudgens plugging the "perfect keto snack!!," on her Instagram April, which was aSlim Fast keto peanut butter cup.
Alicia Vikander's trainer says she got her "Tomb Raider" physique from seven months of hard training and adhering to the keto diet.

Cannabidiol, the popular hemp plant derivative marketed as a cure-all for just about any condition, has only been approved by federal regulators to treat some rare forms of epilepsy, but its popularityquickly grew in 2019.
In April 2019, there were 6.4 million CBD Google searches, according to research in the peer-reviewed JAMA Network Open.
CBD,a non-psychoactive that shouldn't contain the"high" producing THC chemical,has poppedup on shelves across the country in oil, extract, vaporized liquid and capsule form.
The product, which as found its way into natural medicine, cosmetics and even food has caused some issues, however, due to confusion surrounding its legality.

Forget soy and almond milk, 2019 was all about oat milk for a go-tonon-dairy alternative.
Oat milk gained popularitythanks in part to the U.S. arrival of Swedish company Oatly. The company, which was formed in the early 90s,brought its oat drink to the statesstarting at Intelligentsia coffee shops last year.
Nowthe gluten-free and sugar-free product is available in upwards of 2,200 coffee shops and 1,000 grocery stores across the countryfrom Seattle to Northwest Arkansas and Brooklyn, says Oatly's general manager Mike Messersmith.
In addition to a milk-change up for yourcereal and lattes, oat milk is also coming in the form of yogurt soon.
Earlier this year, Danone North America, which sells Dannon yogurt, announced a line of oat-milk yogurt alternatives under its Silk brand.

A cross betweenpaleo and vegan diets, the Pegan diet was originally written about on functional medicine doctor Mark Hyman's blog in 2014. The doctor's buzzworthy brainchild caught on to the mainstream in 2019, however, withPinterest reporting a 337% increase in people searching for the term as of October.
"While Pegan involves leaving out certain foods like refined sugar and flour, conventionally raised animal products and chemical additives its so much more focused on what we can eat for optimal health," Hyman explained to USA TODAY partnerMakeItGrateful.com.
He continued, "Eating this way means you dont have to count calories because when you eat the whole, nutrient-dense foods, youre naturally satiated."
Most people are aware of fasting for religious reasons, but 2019 brought a whole new meaning to the practice when paired with the word "intermittent."
The trendy dieting advice suggestalternating between certain periods of eating and not eating. The methodhas been used as a way to lose weight and for other benefits. A study from The National Institute on Aging last year suggests that intermittent fasting could be the key to longevity.
Food fasting isn't the only kind to pop up this year, either.
Dopamine fasting has become a mindfulness practice that has taken off at the end of the year, about a year after Youtuber Improvement Pill published a video where he perhaps coined the term while describing his routine meant to Get Your Life Back Together, as the video title says.
The term has a different definition for everyone, but for American Authors musician Dave Rublinit means making a concerted effort, in a set amount of time, to avoid social media and TV.

I was first introduced to the idea of a vegan keto diet about five years ago by Carrie Diulus, M.D. As a spinal surgeon, Diulus performs long operations with the added challenge of managing type 1 diabetes. She told me that a plant-based diet high in fats and low in net carbs provided her excellent diabetic control and stable blood sugar for hours at a time.
Diulus is not alone in her praise of the vegan keto diet. There are other nutrition researchers that tout the benefits of a high-fat plant diet, particularly when cycled on and off (although Diulus selects this pattern continuously). For example, David Jenkins, M.D., Ph.D., famous for creating the glycemic index, developed and studied an "Eco-Atkins" diet. In the study, he compared a low-carbohydrate, high-fat plant-based diet (the "Eco-Atkins") with a control diet, which was a high-carb lacto-ovo vegetarian diet. The study reported that after six months, those on the high-fat "Eco-Atkins" diet saw more weight loss and better cholesterol measurements than the control group.
Another example of a higher fat plant diet is the Prolon Fasting-Mimicking Diet developed by the world-famous longevity scientist Valter Longo, Ph.D. On this diet, you eat prepared foods providing 800 calories a day for five consecutive days, with about 60% of calories coming from whole plants rich in fat like Spanish olives and nuts. When this diet was cycled five days a month for three months in a randomized trial, important changes in biomarkers, including stem cell release and the inflammation marker hs-CRP were identified supporting a promotion of health and health span. I have tried Prolon myself, as have hundreds of my patients.

The nations diet is 25 per cent green, 14 per cent red - and nine per cent beige, according to a study.
Researchers found that far from filling our plates with pasta, potatoes and bread, we are mixing things up with leafy greens and rich reds like tomatoes and peppers.
However, 44 per cent admit there are colours they still avoid - with one in five steering clear of anything purple and one in 20 wary about orange foods.
A spokesman for Birds Eye, which commissioned the study, said: Its been widely understood for decades that a healthy diet is one with a good balance, with many trying to follow the five-a-day rule when it comes to fruit and veg.
A great way of ensuring you get all the nutrients you need is to fill your plate with as much veg as possible, and eat in full colour.
While dark green veg is healthy, eating nothing but broccoli or peas wouldnt give you all the nutrition you need - so its great to mix it up with bright yellow sweetcorn, orange carrots, golden chicken and juicy red tomatoes.
Whether its fresh or frozen, eating vegetables of all colours mean you are then consuming a wide range of nutrients and vitamins.
A video created by Birds Eye has also shown how people are drawn to brighter colours of food.
Plates containing purple, beige and white, red and orange, green, and yellow foods were laid out on a table and six participants were asked to select the dish they thought looked the most attractive to eat.
All chose the red and orange plate of food as their favourite, along with the other vibrant colours of purple and green.
The study also found six in 10 adults now make a conscious effort to have a diet filled with varied colours, although women make more of an effort than men (68 per cent compared to 52 per cent).
Just under half believe they eat just the right amount of green foods, although three in 10 think they could do with more.
Around 45 per cent have even made a conscious effort to eat more food of a certain colour, with green among the most popular.
Colour isnt the only thing that puts Brits off a food though, with 58 per cent skipping something on their plate because of the smell.
Another four in 10 have passed over eating something because they werent convinced by its texture.
But women are more likely to turn their nose up at a food because of its smell, texture or how it looks than men are.
It also emerged that on an average day, Brits eat five different colours of food in total, although a fifth have seven or more.
More than 15 per cent even suggest eating a certain colour food can boost their mood.
Half say a plate with lots of bright colours is more appetising, while a picky 23 per cent only like it if there is an even number of colours on their plate.
But the research, carried out for Birds Eye via OnePoll, found a staggering 80 per cent associate the colour green with healthy food.
And men are more likely to consider beige, black, white or brown food as being healthy than women.
A spokesman for Birds Eye added: Having a healthy, balanced diet means eating a variety of foods to ensure getting all the necessary nutrients.
"Making a meal healthier is as easy as adding more colours to your plate.
"Frozen vegetables are a great way to have nutritious vegetables readily available all year round to eat in full colour.

A trend of connected fitness has brought screen-based workouts to the mainstream.
Its a business tale that may soon have a ripple effect for exercisers around the planet. Two plotlines this week crossed as Peloton reeled from a stock-price drop and negative publicity around an ad, whilecompetitor iFit announced massive funding.
Peloton launched as a Kickstarter project in 2013, promising to bring the studio-cycling experience to your home. Live and on-demand classes lured a swell of backers, and the company catapulted into the mass market.
It later unveiled a treadmill and new iterations of its screen-based technology, expanding a physical footprint in retail. The brand caught metaphorical fire in the process to become something of a venture-capital darling with ascending valuation.

Another narrative was unfolding in Utah and the headquarters of ICON Health & Fitness. The company owns iFit and multiple exercise-equipment brands.
For more than 15 years, ICON has worked onits own version of connected fitness, including a library of onscreen classes, personal trainers, and videos made to mimic moving through the real world. A suite of ICON equipment slows, speeds, tilts, and resists to match experiences seen on screen.
This week, a capital management company banked on iFit and its vision of the future of exercise. The interactive fitness platformraised $200 million to help amplify its growth.
News site Axios cited the iFit deal a BFD (big f*cking deal) on the day the news broke. A summary noted the transaction reflects how home fitness companies and their investors keep moving toward the Peloton model, minus the highly questionable ad strategy.
In addition to iFit, ICON is a parent company to NordicTrack,ProForm, Freemotion, Golds Gym, and more. This makes the company among the biggest players in the space.
What are the plans for the $200 million? ICON gave some hints. In a press release, CEOScott Watterson said iFit will dramatically expand consumer awareness, broaden the most expansive library of interactive fitness content in the world, and continue to invest in innovation and technology that truly enhances our customers fitness experience.
ICON competes with fitness manufacturers like Life Fitness and Cybex International. New brands includeEchelon, which offers a fitness app, video classes, and bikes that fit iPad tablets. Another startup, Mirror, builds a display into a reflective rectangle mounted on a wall and serves as your new personal trainer, and so much more.
As for Peloton, despite the hiccups this month, the company remains a dominant competitor in the connected-fitness space. Last year, the company recorded $915 million in revenue and is commonly cited as a $4 billion valuation company.
Cyclists know Zwift and its popular app. The company turns indoor training into a game one that has attracted a mass of users who used to sit and spin on a bike trainer alone. Now they log in, ride, race on video game-like courses, and see where their avatar ranks on a real-world leaderboard.

When competition in a market is this intense, its not just about products and the price of a subscription. Brand recognition and marketing are crucial to a network effect with consumers.ICONs latest funding, asWatterson noted, will be directed towardconsumer awareness as well as product refinement.
The connected-fitness industry is no doubt hot. iFit has a built-in user base, claiming 330,000 paid memberships, and thats growing rapidly. We added more than 77,000 new paid iFit subscribers in our last quarter alone, the company touted.
Watterson said his company is laser-focused on bringing iFit to as many consumers as possible, on as many products as possible, as fast as possible. The capital raise, he said, just accelerated our ability to achieve our mission.

Theres no doubt exercise is good for you. If anything, the benefits of regular physical activity arent stated enough, with improved longevity, vitality and quality of life all positive outcomes of being active. Another benefit to exercise that hasnt received the attention it deserves is its ability to spark individuals to adopt healthier habits.
Eating well, sleeping well, maintaining a healthy weight, refraining from smoking, drinking in moderation and reducing sedentary time are all habits worth embracing. When combined with regular exercise, the health benefits are even greater, including slowing down the physical and mental decline often associated with aging. Yet too few Canadians exercise regularly, and even fewer can lay claim to an impressive list of healthy lifestyle behaviours.
The idea that exercise is a gateway to positive lifestyle changes isnt new. Common sense suggests the fitter you are, the more likely you are to choose healthier foods, sleep better, move more and shed some of those unwanted pounds. This has been proved time and time again by novice exercisers who suddenly cant stop talking about the success of their new diet, the number of steps they take daily and the sleep stats logged on their new smartwatch.
But up until now, there has been very little hard data supporting the theory exercise is a catalyst for healthier behaviours, which is why an article posted in the BMJ Open Sport and Exercise Medicine open-access journal is sparking interest. The articles authors reviewed the lifestyle stats accumulated by 34,061 individuals who participated in the Vitality program, an interactive online wellness platform that incentivizes healthy choices like exercise, medical checkups, sleep, healthy food choices and stress-reducing activities. The more healthy choices members make, the more points they accumulate, which they can trade for discount coupons to participating retail outlets (grocery stores, fitness clubs) or add to the point total of their corporate team vying to outperform colleagues on other teams.
The researchers wanted to use the copious data collected by Vitality to determine whether earning physical activity points was followed by improvements in engagement with other health-promoting behaviour and health markers. They also wanted to see if there were differences in healthy uptakes between those who accumulated the greatest number of exercise minutes (150 or more) per week and those who accumulated the fewest (less than 59 minutes) over the same time period.
Turns out all but the already active exercisers in the Vitality program increased the number of minutes per week they were active. And while they were racking up all those exercise minutes, they were also eating more fruits and vegetables, getting more sleep, spending less time being sedentary, cutting back on alcohol, experiencing less stress and posting better health markers (such as lower blood pressure readings).
The improvements were greatest in those with the most to gain, those with low baseline physical activity levels, said the researchers.
One of the unique aspects of the data collected by Vitality is activity monitors were worn by participants, resulting in a more accurate representation of exercise minutes than self-reported stats. Also worth noting is all lifestyle changes occurred in real-world conditions, not in a lab, which makes them more relatable to the average Joe and Jill.
Our study extends previous findings that health behaviours such as physical activity, healthy eating and abstaining from alcohol and smoking tend to co-occur in individuals and the presence of one healthy behaviour is followed by other healthy behaviours, reported the research team.
Why does establishing an exercise routine result in other lifestyle improvements? No one knows for sure, but successfully introducing an exercise habit builds confidence, especially among those who have struggled to maintain a regular workout schedule. Mastery in one domain often reinforces the ability to master another, so once someone has achieved a previously elusive fitness goal, theyre motivated to take on another challenge, like cutting down on high-calorie foods.
The message to remember in these results is change begets change. Its also notable were capable of pursuing and achieving more than one goal at a time. Taking this new information into account, monitor several lifestyle markers as you boost your activity levels. Take note of your diet, sleeping habits, blood pressure, heart rate and time spent with your feet up. Chances are if you make a commitment to boost your exercise minutes, youll be motivated to complement your efforts by making other healthy changes. Use an activity monitor to keep track of your stats and an old-fashioned notebook to chart your progress, with the end goal being an improvement in the most important health marker of all: feeling better every day.

Picture those precious snowflakes falling gently from the sky.
Unfortunately, they hit the ground and turn into a heavy, slippery mess. Shoveling snow is a necessary evil living in Wisconsin. This year, do not let the threat of shoveling snow drag you down. This year, prioritize your health and happiness instead of worrying about how you are going to clear your driveway.
Below are five ways to enjoy being active and social while preparing your body for the shoveling season.
No 10-gallon hats or boot spurs necessary. Line dancing is for everyone, not just cowgirls and boys. A vine left and right, a few Lindy stepsand a quick Jazz box is all you need to ignite your newly discovered love of line dancing.

Plan to work together to clear off your driveways. The work will feel much easier as each persons house will take less time. You will also get to socialize to make it a more enjoyable experience. Plan to heat up a cup of hot chocolate together when all the work is done. Keep this holiday season merry and bright with the company of your neighbors.
Staying active this holiday season should include more than waiting for the next snowfall. Set the shovel aside and enjoy all the other socially engaging and active opportunities available to you this winter.

Losing weight, toning-up the body, relieving stress are three reasons most people want to join a fitness club. But people can also become fitter by merely incorporating a few techniques into everyday activities. This technique is called "functional training".
People use basic functional movement patterns in everyday life: pushing, lifting, pulling, hinging, squatting, rotating, walking and running are such movement patterns. Functional training incorporates exercises that improve peoples proficiency in these movements giving them an edge and helping them reach their health goals.
The idea behind functional training is that each exercise should be natural and carried into daily life. Functional training is used by physical therapists to rehabilitate patients.
Rehabilitation exercises are designed to help patients regain normal functioning and return to healthy living. Thus, activities that make up functional training are not new, but their incorporation into fitness regimes for ordinary healthy people has only recently become trendy. Some fitness training exercises that are a part of functional training are: squats, deadlift, wall ball, rowing, push press, push jerk, plank and stepups.
Fitness studios around the country are integrating functional training into their offerings. There are thousands of functional fitness workout videos on YouTube, many of which have been viewed hundreds of thousands of times. The popularity of functional training gives rise to the question of why it is beneficial to health. The answer to this question is provided below.
SIMPLE AND SAFE FOR EVERYONE
Functional fitness when performed strengthens muscles, thus making it easier for practitioners to complete daily tasks and activities. Participants use their bodies and mostly free weights to exercise, which is simple and very safe. Functional training works on the entire body; it does not act on isolated muscles. It produces compound movements by engaging every part of a body efficiently. Because the whole body is trained, the body becomes prepared to deal with stress and impact as a single unit. Unlike some exercises which exert few muscle groups, functional training makes the whole body fitter.
STRENGTHENS THE CORE
Functional training makes the bodys core stronger! Muscle groups like abdominals, hips, and scapulars must be strong for the body to maintain stability. Several functional exercises work on core muscles even when they are exercising another part of the body. Also, functional training eliminates modern everyday problems such as neck and back pain, poor posture and ensures a balance between the bodies two halves.
MANY FUNCTIONAL EXERCISES BURN FAT
Even though functional training emphasises training movements, not muscles, is the most less useful exercise in making you leaner and stronger. For example, gymnasts do functional training and hardly have an ounce of fat. They use their body weight to perform gravity-defying movements that sculpt their physique.
LIFTS UP YOUR MOTIVATION
The final reason functional training is ideal for becoming fit is it increases participants motivation, formats like CrossFit believes in building a community around fitness. When people see a clear purpose behind each exercise in their programme, it encourages them to continue doing so as long as possible. It is an effective and extremely safe way to become fitter, stronger, and healthier.

WOD on the Waves announced its booking options for its second-annual ultimate fitness cruise.
The four-night, five-day Caribbean cruise aboard the Celebrity Infinity departs from Miami on April 16, 2020.
We are thrilled to offer our second WOD on the Waves fitness cruise after such a successful first trip, said Chris Brauser, founder and CEO of WOD on the Waves in a statement. This cruise gives fitness lovers, families and friends a place to expand their knowledge of fitness and nutrition no matter what their skill level is in an incredible atmosphere surrounded by like-minded people.
Guests can participate in unique workouts and seminars led by U.S. Olympic athletes and CrossFit Games champions. Throughout the cruise, there will be eight dedicated workout areas on the ship that will host a new WOD, also known as a workout of the day, all day long so cruisers can come and go as they please.
There will also be open gym times and a few special workout events including an island workout experience at Happy Hour CrossFit in Nassau. Guests can expect sandbag workouts, dumbbells, kettlebells, bodyweight, technique classes, pull up rig classes, yoga and boot camp.
WOD on the Waves has expanded its offerings for the 2020 cruise by including more classes, state-of-the-art equipment, experienced coaches, and educational seminars for the more than 2,500 fitness fans expected to set sail. Chris Hinshaw, founder of Aerobic Capacity, will be back by popular demand to host a seminar on his unique training method. Other seminars will be offered on key topics such as nutrition, physical therapy, and fitness techniques.
Travelers will be aboard Celebrity Infinity, departing from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas and CocoCay, the private island owned by Royal Caribbean.

High school cyclist on experience with fitness apps and personal cycling growth – Lariat Saddleback College

Any form of exercise upon getting started can prove daunting. Each activity necessitates its own form of interaction to see growth within and doing the bare minimum does not yield many results by the end of the week.
Apps have popped up to help supplement the hump exercising can create for some people where they cant see themselves getting out the door to begin the session in the first place.
These apps include Strava, MyFitnessPal, Nike Training Club, Peloton Live and Gymshark to name a few that help an individual log their exercises on top of counting calories to keep motivation in check.
Cycling in particular offers numerous benefits for the fledgling cyclist on the fronts of intensive cardio workouts, enhanced cardiovascular performance, increased flexibility and endurance and strengthening the lower body. Cycling even trumps swimming when it comes to an average calorie burning rate per hour as long as the cyclist is riding at a pace between 14-20 miles per hour.
High school senior Jacob Robinson looks towards cycling as his primary form of workout since running takes a toll overtime on the joints. As a cycling enthusiast, Robinson owns both a Specialized Allez Sport and a Specialized Sirrus Sport allowing for competitive cycling tracking over longer distances and leisurely commutes respectively.
Specialized is the best brand of bikes for me, said Robinson. You have Giant, Trek, Cannondale, Canyon, and Pinarello, but Specialized stands out the most out of all them thanks to the sleek design and performance.
Robinson chose to get into cycling thanks to his friends experiences with the sport and having enjoyed riding bikes while younger so moving into the refined sport of cycling was a natural evolution for him.
Ive always enjoyed cycling and riding bikes such as when I rode my bike every day to middle school on the commute to Shorecliffs and back, said Robinson. Each ride I grew to love it more and saw a progressive interest in it leading to my purchasing of better bikes to take my interest even further.
Going back to the fitness apps, they allow for Robinson to manage how much he eats in addition to staying on top of completing previously visited routes even better the next time they are approached by him. This feature is an aspect of the Strava app he utilizes which marks personal best times on specific segments of a given route you are cycling on and pitting it against other peoples best times for the same leg of the ride.
Its a great feature because you can try and get better each time you ride, said Robinson. If you go on a certain route each time you take a ride, you can then challenge yourself to get better upon each attempt.
Just upon his ride today, Robinson received a personal best on Capistrano Bluffs mile segment with a two minute and 40 seconds time at an average pace of 20 miles per hour. The feature makes each ride feel refreshing to him and keeps each instance of a route exciting.
Weight loss is also a large motivating factor for Robinson in continuing to further his cycling goals as running is hard to get into for him and cardio is still desired. Strava and MyFitnessPal assure that calories are counted and progress is noted every day to see eventual growth from when he first started utilizing them more extensively earlier in 2019.
Cycling has helped me lose weight and I think makes me feel healthier, doesnt make my heart feel like its going to explode after each time I do it, said Robinson. It allows me to feel better about myself and inspires me to do better on every facet even beyond health making me care more about what life has to offer.
In an attempt to slim down and start leveling himself out, Robinson found solace in cycling as a proper means to see a gradual process of change with commitment to long 20-40 mile bike rides about three to four times in a given week. Robinson encourages other people to take a step towards healthier living and starting out with a passion for a form of exercise goes a long way in initiating that process.
Technology in this instance motivates an individual and when used for constructive purposes it can see the user growth in areas previously thought incapable.
