The fitness challenge, dubbed the Sweat and Shred Showdown runs for eight weeks, with different challenges introduced throughout.
Its really just helping people kind of kickstart their summer goals, said Kayla Kay, a personal trainer thats organizing the challenge.

Fitness trainer and friend: YMCA coach inspires members through … – Lynchburg News and Advance
Brittany Crawley started her fitness journey running.
And she used to jokingly say the only way she would run is if someone was chasing her with a gun.
And I got into it and I found a love for it but then I found a love of fitness, she said. Its not just about the aesthetics, its pushing your body to be better and to achieve things that are hard. Exercise is hard but in my opinion, the reward is in the work.
She says its not about her weight or her looks, its about overcoming the struggles she felt in those workouts and translating that into into other life experiences.
Crawley, 37, is the group fitness coordinator and coach for Better You Bootcamp (BYBC) at the Downtown YMCA.
Crawley helped to launch BYBC a year ago with the intention of creating a personal training experience in a small group setting.

I think a lot of times women think that they can only do smaller weights or they have to do a certain workout because its just for women, she said. And I think women deserve to be in the weight room. Women deserve to pick up heavy weights and be proud of that. Because it changes your body but it also changes your mindset.
As a child, she said she was very athletic and played sports including cheerleading and softball but after graduating high school, she didnt stay as active.
She married her husband Daniel at 22 and had her first child, Colton, when she was nearly 25.
And I put on a ton of weight and never really lost it, but never exercised, she said. I just thought this is just what it is.
Three years later, she had her daughter, Baileigh, and when she turned 30 she knew she had to start feeling better in her own body.
And I thought if I feel this at 30, then Im going to feel it at 40 or 50, she said. And thats when I kind of got into running and then found group fitness. It was something that I say saved me.
She said she had instructors who encouraged her the entire time and she uses that as a way to pay it forward to her own members now.
I just decided one day, I want to do this for somebody else, I want to encourage people where they are because I had people pour into me, she said.
Five years ago, she got her first group fitness certification and began teaching classes not knowing anything, she said.
But I fell in love with it, she said. But more so, I fell in love with inspiring people.
Today, she holds certifications in Barre, Les Mills BodyPump and Les Mills BodyCombat, cycle and personal training.
She said its important for trainers to continue their education when it comes to fitness.
The fitness space is always evolving and if you look back at the early 90s with aerobics, women were taught you have to do two hours of cardio every day, and you dont lift weights because then youre going to be bulky and all of that has been debunked, she said. So as things evolve, I like to continue to learn.
Crawley has been an instructor at all three of the local YMCAs including the Jamerson and the Express but was offered a full-time job at the Downtown location last July where she says the community feels like family.
You can work out at home and thats great for when you need it but theres something about coming with likeminded people and working out together and feeding off of that energy that is unlike anything else, she said. And I think people desperately need community. People need other people. Were not meant to do life by ourselves.
Its there that she both teaches group fitness classes but also coaches BYBC members like Kristi Vann.
Vann said Crawleys countenance brings joy into the room and added she is not only a group instructor and teacher but inspiration.
She treats everyone as a friend, she said. Her most famous response is hello friend. You may have never met her before but she makes you feel like a friend from the shoot.
Vann said as a woman shes always been taught that cardio is the only way for weight loss but through her sessions with Crawley, she has a new perspective on weight training.
I knew she knew what she was doing, she said. I love her as a person as a coach and I was just really excited for this Better You Bootcamp. I have to be honest, in my adulthood, this is the best thing Ive ever done for myself as far as fitness goes.
Vann said Crawley is one of those people others want to be around because of her work ethic and welcoming personality.
Youre coming to BYPC to get in better shape but Im coming to be coached by Brittany and to be around Brittany and learn from Brittany because you meet people in life and you can kind of discern whos genuine and whos not, she said. She is one of the most genuine people that I could ever speak for. Her level of care goes outside of the gym. Shes irreplaceable.
Vann said there is no one else who works as hard as Crawley.
And its not about the money, its not about climbing the ladder, its not about her. Its about us, she said. Were a family and Brittany is our mom and she takes care of us.
While BYBC is tailored to individuals specific physical needs, Crawley said the community goes even further than that.
In my experience, 75% of it isnt about the physical, its about the emotional and the mental and the spiritual health that people are looking for, she said. The physical is very important, but its just a part of whole body fitness.
Outside of the gym, Crawley lives with her family in Evington and enjoys nature, hiking and being at the beach.
She is a special needs mom to her son, Colton, 12, who has autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
That is one of the hardest roads, she said. I think any parent has to walk to watch your child struggle daily, just with simple communication, social interactions and having a child whos overwhelmed by just normal situations, meltdowns Ive said this a million times over but if I could take it from him, I would. But also its been the biggest blessing because he teaches me every single day that life is hard and youre not going to always get it right but you just keep trying to do better.
At the end of the day, Crawley says she is most successful when her members are successful.
My biggest success is seeing people achieve things that they never thought they could, she said. Thats my golden ticket.

On Holding, Xponential Fitness downgraded as Baird voices … – Seeking Alpha
AscentXmedia
The rally for On Holding (NYSE:ONON), Xponential Fitness (NYSE:XPOF), and European Wax Center (EWCZ) has stretched valuations to balance risk/reward dynamics, according to Baird.
The firms analysts told clients it is an opportune time to begin using strength to further reduce exposure to names that have run quickly upward as of late. As such, all three names were reduced to Hold-equivalent ratings from prior Buy recommendations.
We are further reducing group exposure by downgrading several high-quality stocks following sharp year-to-date gains. More specifically, we have maintained a cautious group view given prospective macroeconomic risks, but a positive view of fundamentals for ONON, XPOF, and EWCZ, the team wrote. However, with these stocks +36-89% year-to-date and nearing our price targets, we are stepping aside and will look to revisit with passage of time, or pullbacks tied to group sentiment which could be pressured if slower consumer spending continues beyond March.
On Holding (ONON) and Xponential Fitness (XPOF) each slumped 6.7% shortly after Wednesday's market open. Meanwhile, European Wax Center (EWCZ) -1.2% marked a comparatively modest decline.

Read More..Hypochondria Is More Than Just a Fear of Getting Sick It Can Be Debilitating – POPSUGAR
Lewis Capaldi's new Netflix documentary "How I'm Feeling Now" is drawing attention to a series of health conditions, including Tourette syndrome and hypochondria. The singer-songwriter said that being in the entertainment industry has at times even exacerbated these conditions.
"The pressure of the job is the problem. The mammoth tours of enormous venues. The expectations upon me. That's surely anxiety-inducing for anybody, never mind a huge hypochondriac like myself," Capaldi told The Sunday Times in an interview ahead of the documentary's release.
Capaldi has spoken out in the past about having hypochondria, aka illness anxiety disorder. Last year, the 26-year-old shared on the "Diary of a CEO" podcast that he often leans on his mom when he has symptoms of the disorder. "I phone her and I say, 'Mum, I've got a headache, I'm dizzy, I think I've got a brain tumor or something,' she'll be like, 'Shut the f*ck up, you're fine. Take some paracetamol and go to bed,'" he said.
Capaldi even said he had to cancel one show over fears something was wrong with his health. Capaldi's candidness raises a lot of questions about hypochondria, including what causes it and how to spot the signs. Here's what you need to know.
Hypochondria is known medically as illness anxiety disorder. It's a mental health condition that's marked by a preoccupation that physical symptoms are signs of a serious illness, even when there is no medical evidence to suggest that someone is sick, according to the National Library of Medicine.
"Most people have times when they might be worried about a symptom in their body and, in the case of phantom symptoms, they go away. A person struggling with illness anxiety disorder has a really difficult time getting reassurance that they're OK," says psychologist Lily Brown, PhD, the director of research at the Center For the Treatment and Study of Anxiety at the University of Pennsylvania.
People with hypochondria have "excessive worry" that they're sick or developing a serious medical condition, says Hillary Ammon, PsyD, a clinical psychologist at the Center For Anxiety & Women's Emotional Wellness. They may see doctor after doctor trying to get a diagnosis or avoid interaction with the medical community altogether "because they're afraid of actually finding out a diagnosis," says Thea Gallagher, PsyD, a clinical assistant professor at NYU Langone Health and a cohost of the "Mind in View" podcast.
There are a lot of possible symptoms someone can have with illness anxiety disorder.
"A typical presentation is someone who repeatedly goes to the doctor and gets several opinions," Dr. Brown says. "They might need to take a lot of time off work and have a functional impairment because it's hard for them to think about things other than what might be wrong with their body."
People with hypochondria will spend a lot of time looking up their symptoms online and become so preoccupied with their health that "it gets in the way of other things they care about," Dr. Brown says.
"A good indicator that your anxiety is teetering towards problematic is if your worries are interfering with your daily life," Dr. Ammon says. "For example, you may be caught up in worry spirals about the illness, making it difficult to complete daily tasks or focus on work. You may be engaging in avoidance behaviors that are preventing you from performing daily tasks or hobbies you previously enjoyed."
For example, someone with hypochondria who is scared of Lyme disease may avoid walking in grassy or wooded areas, scan their body repeatedly, and do self-exams on a daily basis, she says. "People with illness anxiety disorder may engage in safety behaviors, such as seeking reassurance from loved ones or performing tasks that give them a sense of control related to their worries," Dr. Ammon explains.
Dr. Gallagher stresses that having illness anxiety disorder is different from seeking a second opinion when you're not satisfied with your medical care. A good sign that you may have illness anxiety disorder (versus being brushed off by a doctor and wanting another opinion) is if you keep pursuing a diagnosis, even when medical testing has determined you're fine. "You need to follow the science," Dr. Gallagher says. "When you start getting that third or fourth opinion and now you think you have another health condition and another health condition, it's become like a compulsion."
The cause of hypochondria isn't known, but Dr. Gallagher says there are a few factors that may play a role in whether someone develops the condition. Those include having trouble tolerating uncertainty and discomfort, having family members who are preoccupied with their own health or your health, or having past experience with a serious health issue, she says.
People with a history of physical or sexual abuse are also more likely to have hypochondria, but that doesn't mean everyone with illness anxiety disorder has a history of abuse, the National Library of Medicine says.
Ultimately, developing illness anxiety disorder is due to "a combination of genetic and environmental factors," Dr. Gallagher says.
A person is usually only diagnosed with illness anxiety disorder once all medical conditions have been ruled out, Dr. Ammon says. If your test results continue to come back normal and your medical provider has no medical concerns, but you are still experiencing excessive worry, exposure therapy may be recommended, she says.
That involves exposing yourself to thoughts or situations that scare you. "Through exposure therapy, people typically learn that the feared illness they are concerned about may not be as likely as they once believed and to better tolerate the distress associated with anxiety and uncertainty," says Dr. Ammon.
In some cases, antianxiety medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may also be helpful, in conjunction with therapy, she says.
Experts stress that being treated for illness anxiety disorder isn't something that will magically make symptoms go away but it can help. "The possibility of developing a serious medical condition will always be there. There's always a chance," Dr. Ammon says. "Through exposure therapy, people learn to better tolerate the uncertainty of developing a serious illness, as well as examine the likelihood of their fears being true."

Behrend dedicates new Erie Hall as fitness, recreation and wellness … – Pennsylvania State University
ERIE, Pa. The dedication of Penn State Behrends new Erie Hall a $28.2 million fitness, recreation and wellness center drew a crowd of administrators, alumni and coaches to the buildings lobby, where an art display incorporates flooring from the original Erie Hall, which opened in 1952.
Behind them, a steady line of students passed through the facilitys turnstiles. Behrend students contributed more than $10 million of the facilitys cost, drawing from the Student-Initiated Fee, after seeing a need for more recreation space at Behrend. The new Erie Hall, which includes a three-court gymnasium; spin, step and yoga rooms; and training space for the colleges NCAA athletic teams; already is seeing heavy use: More than 4,400 people enter the building every week.
The building is very welcoming, said Brian Streeter, senior director of athletics at Behrend. It enhances the environment our students learn in, and it helps them enjoy their time at Penn State Behrend.

Pentagon Critics Blame Diversity Policies and Fitness Standards for Recruiting Woes – Military.com
Conservative politicians and critics of the Biden administration have released a report that offers a solution to the recruiting issues facing the military: Ditch efforts to add diversity, fight extremism, or combat climate change.
"What we're trying to do is save the military from a pernicious ideology that can have a very negative effect on warfighting capability," Rebeccah Heinrichs, a member of the Heritage Foundation panel that wrote the newly released report, said during a public rollout at the conservative think tank in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.
The Heritage report underscores many of the same warnings issued for years by Republicans -- though especially in recent months as politicians have escalated allegations of a "woke" force. Many say the left-leaning policies embraced by the Biden administration lead to a loss of confidence among service members, weaken the military and, in turn, hurt recruitment.

The report, authored by a panel handpicked by Heritage, includes a poll of troops and civilians, and a bevy of citations to news coverage and editorials meant to bolster the claims.
Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., who chaired the panel, told the same auditorium that "these initiatives have taken a real toll on our military and its perception amongst the public."
The Heritage panel's top concern is the Pentagon's "sweeping embrace of diversity, equity, and inclusion" policies.
It specifically names critical race theory, known as CRT, as a key example, and cites the choice by the Navy's top officer to include Dr. Ibram X. Kendi's book "How To Be An Antiracist" among other titles on a reading list in 2021. Kendi argues that there is no such thing as "non-racist," and his book has become a flashpoint in the ongoing U.S culture wars.
CRT is an academic theory, developed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, that is found mostly on college campuses. It argues that racism has been embedded in systems and policies throughout the United States over long periods of time.
Waltz said that "we should prohibit the instruction and propagation of these divisive teachings such as CRT" but also acknowledged "often they're not labeled that way" by the military.
The report also notes that "there are no such explicitly labeled programs or policies" but asserts that CRT's principles are being taught and implemented through policy actions."
Pentagon officials say there is no evidence such programs are distracting from preparing to fight wars or are scaring off potential recruits. On the contrary, they argue, such programs strengthen the military.
"There's been no detraction from the primary mission of both the Navy and Marine Corps to defend our nation and do so in a forward-deployed manner," Navy Under Secretary Erik Raven told the Senate Armed Services Committee at a recent hearing on recruiting challenges.
The military has maintained that the COVID-19 pandemic, a lack of qualified young people, a strong job market and a misunderstanding of the military are main causes of recruitment troubles.
The debate has generated hot hearing exchanges tailored for cable news. Republicans had promised to use their new majority in the House to zero in on policies they deem to be "woke."
The Heritage report is also concerned that the military is lowering its standards -- specifically physical fitness requirements -- in order to "even the playing field."
They cited the Army's new fitness test -- rolled out last summer after a troubled development -- as an example of the problem. The report argues that the largest military branch has potentially hurt recruitment by lowering its minimal physical fitness standard over concerns that women were not going to pass.
"I think that if you water it down and take away something that is hard, and frankly exclusive, about the warriors who joined the military, I think that obviously is going to have an impact on recruitment," Heinrichs said.
As Heritage points out, the new Army Combat Fitness Test, or ACFT, was originally intended to have gender-neutral grading standards. An earlier version of the test also tasked soldiers with doing pull-ups and touching their knees to their elbows.
That event was eventually replaced with the plank, and gendered standards were put in place after it was discovered roughly half of women could not pass an earlier version of the ACFT.
However, the new test is largely considered a much better measurement of fitness than its predecessor, which only measured push-ups, sit-ups and a two-mile run. The new test measures deadlifts, hand-release push-ups, how long a soldier can hold a plank, a timed two-mile run, an event in which soldiers sprint and carry heavy weight, and another in which troops throw a 10-pound medicine ball as far as they can.
The think tank report includes a poll that Heritage conducted with both civilians and service members on some of their greatest concerns.
Among the military, the poll showed 41% of service members felt both reduction of physical fitness standards to promote equity and an overemphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion programs were the top two areas of politicization that drew concerns.
The report found that "70% of active-duty personnel ... stated that reduction of physical fitness standards to 'even the playing field' had decreased their trust in the military."
However, the poll sampled only 301 service members -- a much lower number than most national polls would use and nearly four times fewer than the sample used in this poll for the overall public. Heritage polled 1,000 Americans of all ages and 299 more Americans 18 to 24 years of age for other results.
The survey found that the top reason for a loss of trust in the military among adults in the U.S. was "reports of sexual assault in the military."
To Mike Berry, a former lawyer for the Marine Corps and another member of the panel, the issue comes down to the fact that "we're in an era in which our young people are being told, 'America is not worth sacrificing for, America is not worth serving, America is not worth risking your life for.'"
