There's no one-size-fits-all number for water intake, but a good approach is to drink at least 8 ounces of water every one to two hours, and more if you exercise. Staying hydrated can fend off false hunger cues and prevent you from eating food you don't really want or need.

If you often find yourself dodging comments like "That's all you're going to eat?" or "Really, no dessert?," tell friends and family when enough is enough. No one should have to endure shame for their diet preferences, whether they're eating healthy or not. Don't let judgement of others sway you -- stick to your guns and eat the way you want to eat.

Even if you are on a diet, allow yourself some room for indulgence if you want to. It is the holidays, after all, and it's not every day you can eat Grandma's homemade pumpkin pie. You shouldn't feel guilty about enjoying the foods you love while spending time with people you love. Plus, restricting yourself from certain foods can lead to you wanting those foods more and eventually overeating them.

You can trick yourself into eating less by using smaller plates and bowls. People tend to fill up their plates no matter the size, so you may end up packing a larger plate with way more food than you need. This trick also works if you love to go back for seconds -- if your first plate was small, going back for seconds won't necessarily derail your healthy intentions.

If you're really serious about sticking to your healthy routine during the holidays, plan ahead for events. For example, if you're going to a sit-down dinner at a restaurant, look up the menu online beforehand. 1. Jaylee Oberg and Rachael Junard on: The wellness industry shift

The founders of You Good, Sis?, a collective for black and brown women looking for a mental, spiritual, and physical check-in by way of fitness events and community yoga classes, both agree: The wellness industry is shifting. As people struggle to keep up with the fast-paced and demanding approaches to fitness, I see more of an emphasis on overall wellbeing that fits into any lifestyle, Oberg says. I am so happy to see a wider range of fitness options at traditional gyms where walking clubs are being introduced by the same places that run bootcamps and high impact classes. She also anticipates dance classes will gain in popularity as a way for people to shake stress away and just be themselves. Junard adds that classes to stretch, roll, and realign the body are a great thing to see as people begin to understand the importance of cross training.

2. Cameron Ahouse on: Boston-based recovery services

It may not seem like it from his Instagram page, but EverybodyFights trainer Cameron Ahouse is all about rest and relaxation. I think people are realizing that you can train as hard as you want, but if youre not taking the time for proper recovery, then youre most likely not going to see the gains you want and you risk the chance of becoming injured, he says. This is something I have had to learn the hard way. The amount of time we spend recovering from exercise is just as important as the amount of time spent training, and this has a direct effect on our movement and performance. This includes productive sleep, proper warm-ups and cool downs, pliability, and mobility. He adds that Boston is already seeing a lot of these options for fitness consumers, which include compression therapy boots, percussive therapy guns, and standalone assisted stretch studios.

5. Christie Wang on: Convenient fitness options

Youve probably heard of Peloton and you might even have a few dumbbells at home for those days when you just dont want to go to the gym. Pilates instructor Christie Wang says at home fitness subscriptions are only going to become more popular. Tammy Esterly, the owner of Devils Backbone, said she started doing CrossFit six years ago. She said she wasnt sure if she was fit enough to start and doesnt want anyone to have that same fear when they begin their fitness journey.

One of the misconceptions is you have to be fit I have to be fit to go into that type of fitness, Esterly said. No, we are where you want to start.

Unlike other gyms, Esterly said Devils Backbone is an all-inclusive space that trades unlimited access to unlimited classes and resources. Building a community within the gym is what helps most people create a habit of working out. Knowing that the gym buddy lifting weights and running next to you every day is going to notice if you arent there for a month is a motivator to keep going when the going gets tough, she said.

Walking into a gym can be a scary experience, Esterly said, because most people who want to get in shape havent ever been taught what the machines are for or how to use them. Rather than letting newcomers flounder and slip through the cracks, Devils Backbone guides small classes through workouts every day, shaping each workout to fit the needs of each member, all without paying extra for a personal trainer.

You dont have to add on to your package. You don't pay anything extra if you want a private coach, she said. Thats all part of your membership with our gym and the type of fitness we offer.

While gift certificates and free trials are available year-round, starting on Black Friday, Esterly said she is throwing in a bonus month for anyone who buys two months' worth of classes. That deal is good for anyone who walks through the door, cash in hand, or for someone who has a gift certificate they want to redeem for two months.

Devils Backbone Fitness offers three levels of membership, all with the same access but with different levels of commitment.

Road to the 2020 Real Rider Cup: Focusing on Fitness – America’s Best Racing

Americas Best Racing writer Melissa Bauer-Herzog is currently training for the 2020 edition of the event and is documenting her training up to next Septembers show.

While I took every chance I had to ride in October, getting on horses in three different states during a hectic month of travel, November was a different story.

Early November is almost always one of my busiest times of the year and 2019 was no different. With clients having multiple horses running in the Breeders Cup and selling at the November breeding stock sales there was barely time to sleep, let alone coordinate schedules so I could get out to ride. Add in a holiday and all of November is basically a toss for riding.

So I made a new plan for the month.

When I competed nearly every weekend as a teenager it was always drilled into my head that I should be in as good of shape as my horse, if not better. As I touched on in my last blog, I am in the opposite of good shape right now so instead of No Stirrup November (a form of equestrian bootcamp - or torture, depending on how you look at it - where riders spend the month riding without stirrups, which is much harder than it sounds) I decided to focus on Fitness November. Its not as catchy as No Stirrup November but it works.

While Im missing the part of my teenage fitness schedule that had me riding at least one horse every day, I do still have the gym part. Luckily for me, I have access to both my apartment complexs private gym and a gym I hold a membership to so there is no excuse not to go.

Getting into a go to the gym routine has been difficult, to be honest, so I embraced using the sales to at least get some exercise routine in. Sale days are almost step goal cheat days as I can often walk 10,000 steps just around the pavilion with trips to the barns adding in even more without even trying. After going from not getting in nearly the steps I should to the sale steps count, my Garmin must have thought I was in some sort of boot camp.

However, when the sales ended in mid-November I had to work harder to get in my workouts. Thankfully Im a goal-oriented person, so giving myself the goal of getting fit for the Real Rider Cup has been the kick Ive needed to do something every day.

One such method of tortu exercise is starting back on the Couch to 5K program that saw me train for a 5K in 2013 with grand plans of running a 5K in 2020. It seems great in theory but well actually see if I get that far. If nothing else, its reminding me that I can indeed run on a treadmill, something I wasnt convinced I could do without becoming a viral social media video in the past.

There is definitely a lot of work to be done both in and out of the saddle in coming months but as I get more involved in preparing for next years show, I am remembering how much I missed not only the riding side of things but having an equestrian goal to pursue even if every muscle in my body is currently convinced Im attempting to kill it.
