Doctor calls for standardizing mental fitness tests for elected officials | TheHill – The Hill

Physician and journalist James Hamblin is calling for a system that would evaluate the cognitive abilities of elected officials in order to ensure that they are fit for public office.

Though a president's physical exam does typically include a cognitive assessment, Hamblinargued Monday thatthese tests have not been standardized.

"Its certainly relevant to know whether someone has a terminal diagnosis that would really suggest that its unlikely that they would live through their term, but beyond that what youre really asking is does this person have the ability to do the job cognitively," Hamlin, who is a staff writer at left-leaning magazine The Atlantic, told Hill.TV.

He went on tosuggest that testing mental fitness couldplay an even more important role than physical exams, noting that physical impediments to the job are "less relevant today than it might have been back decades ago."

Hamlin first floated theideafor standardizing cognitive testsin a feature for TheAtlantic. Though the idea hasn't been completed fleshed out, he said a potential systemcould include a standardized test that would, for example, include telling a candidate a story and then asking them to synthesize the information and repeat it back.

If a person has significant cognitive decline to the point of Alzheimer's Disease, theyll get almost none of those questions right, he said. And early cognitive decline, theyll start to forget questions.

There is nothing stable or genius about these public rants from a president, Omar tweeted earlier this year. Deranged, bizarre, incoherent, sad ... come to mind.

Omar's comments at the time came after Trump once again referred to himself as a "stable genius" in an effort to defend his trade policies.

Former Vice President Biden, a leading 2020 Democratic presidential contender, has faced similar criticism about his mental fitness following some of his debate performances. Throughout several of the debates, Biden has made anumber of gaffes, often stumbling at times when trying to get a point across.

Elsa Pataky reveals she and Chris Hemsworth get very competitive over fitness – 7NEWS.com.au

Spanish superstar Elsa Pataky is an honorary Aussie.

She's embraced the laid back lifestyle with husband Chris Hemsworth, calling Byron Bay home - and she's also known for her passion for exercise and wellbeing.

"Feeling great is the most important thing, and feeling happy," Pataky said.

"It's about changing your philosophy on life and eating healthy and being strong-minded.

"The best anti-ageing tip for your body is to build muscle - because when you get older, everything starts to lose volume.

"I think women are really scared about doing weights - but you have to do so much to look very muscle-y. It's better to use the word 'tone' - and for that, you need to use some weights, even if it's just your own body weight with push-ups and squats."

Elsa encourages people to work out with their partners or other friends and family - explaining that she and Chris also bonded over their love of fitness.

While Elsa has taught him how to ride a horse, he's also taught her how to surf.

"It's easier to do that first step if you do it with somebody else, and also you can challenge each other," Pataky said.

"I know mums say they don't have any time and can't do it - but there's no excuses if you really want it and really want to make the change.

"Start with just 15 minutes - do little squats or ab exercises. If you're going for a walk on the beach, just do some lunges. Or if you catch the bus to work, stop a few stations before and walk to work.

"Use your moments in life to do some exercise - it helps you to feel good about life and start your day in a different way."

"We're very competitive, both of us," Pataky said.

"We both try to keep ourselves informed about health, so he'll be like, I'm taking these pills, and I'll go, I hate pills, I'm not getting pills.

"We try to convince each other about our ideas. And it's good that we keep the competition to exercise."

Elsa began drinking smoothies when she was pregnant with her daughter India as a way to increase her vegetable intake - and she's been hooked ever since.

"You want to eat more vegetables, but sometimes it's so difficult," Pataky said.

"So I decided to put them all into a blender and drink it in the morning - and I convinced myself that it tasted amazing because it was good for me and good for my baby.

"I put everything in it - lettuce, spinach, celery, cucumber, cauliflower - and I'll put some banana in just to make it tasty. And she loves vegetables now."

Elsa and Chris are currently building their forever home in Byron Bay, and she credits the location for inspiring her outlook on life and fitness.

"Being in a place where you can do things outside makes it so easy," Pataky said.

"I feel in the city, when you want to work out you have to go to a gym or do a class in an enclosed place - but being able to go to the beach to exercise or run does make things easier, I'm not going to lie about that.

"And also finding hobbies that you like, it's so much easier when you're outside."

But it's not all fun and games - as the home was still under construction, Elsa expressed her frustration over the drones that were hoping to catch a glimpse of the couple and their family.

"I get so angry about these drones," Pataky said.

"What am I gonna do when my kids are naked in the pool and then these drones are taking photos?

"It's something that we are actually really scared about, because it's really invading our privacy. It's unfair.

"We spend a lot of time outside, so there's a lot of terraces. It's our dream house, and we've waited for this for a long time."

Mike Ewing had been waiting in line for three hours. The 34-year-old owner of a HVAC company in Westminster, Maryland, was visiting Universal Studios, excited to get on a Harry Potter ride. Just before he could clamber aboard, though, an attendant took him aside, asking him to sit in a chair to check the fit for the safety harness. Ewing didnt fit; he couldnt ride. It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life, he says. To be so big you cant fit on a Harry Potter ride. That was a real wake up call to me.

Hed been heavy for most of his life, at 511 and 240 pounds. But hed been going out to restaurants a lot, overeating, not paying attention to his diet. The weight, he says, came on pretty fast. He started feeling self-conscious, having to shop at big and tall stores. He was 28 years old and weighed 280 pounds.

Ewing threw himself into fixing his diet. He cut out sugar; he dropped most carbs. He had a trainer who pushed him to lift weights twice a week; one day of upper body work, one day of lower. Not crazy, but a habit Ive kept to this day, he says.

He dropped to 250 pounds pretty quickly. Then he went off his diet. But he stayed around the weight: 250-260 or so. Then he started having health issuesbowel infections and gout so bad he had trouble walking. With two young daughters, he decided he had to shape up.

He went back on his diet and in six month shed another 45 pounds. Hed gone from from 280 to 205, in two separate cuts, over seven years. Hes able to buy regular clothes that fit, and is down to a 36-inch waist, something he never remembers having. Hes more confident. I am able to be a better father and husband now, he says. Thats really all that matters when it comes down to it.

In some ways its been a long journey, but having his wife along has helped keep him motivated. A few months into his weight loss plan, she started her own. I started to look better, and she started to look better, he says. We helped each other out so much in this regard. Once you start seeing results its so much easier to keep going. Within a few months, people noticed; now its often a topic of conversation. I get a lot of shocked faces, yes. Hes still looking to lose more weight, with a target of 189 pounds.

Find something that works with you and stick with it, he says, when it comes to weight loss advice. His weight gain was 100-percent diet, so thats what he focused on. He committed to it, with no cheat days; allowing himself that wiggle room made it too easy to backslide. Exercising is the most important thing you can do for the overall health of your body, he says, but weight loss really begins in controlling what you eat.

As she claims, she did not lose weight for the looks but for health. She did not say however how much she weighed before the surgery but she sure dropped a lot of pounds.

Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery. There are three types of bariatric surgery and all are aimed to losing weight faster. There is gastric sleeve surgery also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, where most of the stomach is removed and left with only a small banana shaped part. This makes the person feel full so fast when eating since the stomach has been reduced. This is very permanent. Another one is called gastric bypass, also known as, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass where the surgeon creates a shorter and smaller passage with the stomach and the intestines. Lastly, there is laparoscopic adjustable gastric band which is the one that Sidibe had done for herself. This is more gradual than the other types of bariatric surgery since the doctor puts a band around the top of the stomach which reduces the food intake. This gets adjusted regularly depending on your progress. In cases where this does not work, then the band is removed, and another method may be tried this time.

In 2017 Gabourey Sidibe pointed out in her memoir, This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare that she didnt want to face the same fate as her brother, who now has Type 2 Diabetes. So when she lost and gained back 60 pounds, surgery was an easy option.

My surgeon said they would cut my stomach in half,

This would limit my hunger and capacity to eat, (thus) my brain chemistry would change and Id want to eat healthier.

Ill take it! (And) my lifelong relationship with food had to change. The surgery wasnt the easy way out. I wasnt cheating by getting it done, (because) I wouldnt have been able to lose as much weight as Ive lost without the surgery.

I just didnt want to worry, Gabby Sidibe said. I truly didnt want to worry about all the effects that go along with diabetes. I genuinely [would] worry all the time about losing my toes.

Gabby Sidibe has stepped out and shown out in her latest outfit, and fans are applauding her looks and ever-slimming-down frame.

The Empire actress wore a yellow and red African print dress to attend the birthday party of her pal and co-star Nicole Ari Parker.

Sidibe has dropped the extra pounds in the three years since she underwent laparoscopic bariatric surgery. The actress, who shot to fame after starring in the 2009 drama Precious, opened up about why she chose to go under the knife in her memoir This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare.

Gabourey has more than proven herself in her acting career. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for Precious, after all! But still, she realized her size was holding her back when she overheard a Hollywood executive say that she was too big to be on a magazine cover.

Gabourey works out and eats healthy. But shes not sharing the number on the scale. After all 150 lbs looks entirely different on each person. She said: My starting weight and my goal weight, theyre personal.

In an episode of Robin Roberts podcast Everybodys Got Something, Gabourey said she doesnt need to be congratulated for her weight loss.You dont need to congratulate me on it. You dont congratulate me every time I blow my nose. I needed to. Its my body. Mind your own body. She wants to be recognized for her talent, not her body.

It is a misconception that Sidibe entirely relied on the surgery in order for her to lose weight. The truth is, she actually worked with nutritionists as well to help her eat healthier and aid her in losing weight. She does not share much on social media or any type of media at all but one of the things she mentioned to be among her tricks is what she called meatless Mondays. She shared on her instagram how she is going for meatless meals on Mondays, and how a friend helped her with recipes since she does not cook much herself.

Can meat make you fat? It is a little odd how Sidibe removes meat from her meals when many of the crossfit people that we hear, say that they remove rice and bread, and sweets from their life and hold on to meat and vegetables instead. So why did Sidibe had to let go of meat as well? Well, she did not entirely eradicate meat from her diet. As she said, she does not eat meat on Mondays only. It is possible that she cannot abandon unhealthy kind of meat in other days such as those with a lot of fats, or the types that need sugary sauces, or are oily, so she has to choose one day when she is not eating any of the possible fattening meats.

If you go meatless Mondays as well, how can you adapt? Well if you are not going to have any meat such as pork, beef, poultry, lamb, and not even fish, then the options left are vegetables or lentils. But what alternatives can you eat that day that would still get you full and satisfied as steak would?

Mushrooms: Mushrooms are definitely delish! Well you can have mushroom for your meals in order to have the almost meat taste or perhaps associate it with your other meaty meals with mushrooms as sides. You can recreate a lamb burger but without the lamb through stuffed mushrooms with pecans and portobello wellington.

Tofu: have you smelled tofu being fried or a mock meat tofu burger? It smells even so much better and too enticing than meat. Although it might not satisfy the tongue as much as it satisfied your nose. So in order to be able to down tofu, you can make crispy tofu nuggets, crab cakes, breaded fish fillet, Moroccan cutlets in lemon-olive sauce, tempeh meatballs, seitan steak in beurre blanc sauce, balsamic barbecue ribs, tacos sin carne, and chicken salad with cranberries and pistachios with the meat replaced with tofu, of course. Your Guide to Perfect Portion Sizes for 10 Thanksgiving Dishes – Healthline

Thanksgiving is notorious for being a holiday when many of us overindulge in our favorite fatty and sugary comfort foods.

Which, if its just one day, isnt all that bad, noted Shereen Jegtvig, a nutritionist at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut.

However, she points out that often, the problem is that Thanksgiving is just the beginning of the holiday feeding frenzy.

In fact, a 2016 study reported that the average Americans weight increases by 0.2 percent over Thanksgiving and 0.4 percent over Christmas. The study further noted that the average person gains about 1 pound each holiday season.

While this may not seem like much, researchers say we often dont lose this gain after the holidays, leading to creeping weight gain.

It doesnt have to be this way, though. By keeping an eye on portion sizes and choosing healthier options, we can enjoy our Thanksgiving meal without the worry of potential weight gain.

Regarding portion sizes, Jegtvig points out that serving size and portion size arent necessarily the same thing.

The serving size is a fixed amount for example, 1/2 cup thats used to calculate the number of calories in a particular item.

The portion size, however, is how much you choose to eat of that item.

So, the portion size might be equivalent to several servings, depending how much you choose to eat.

Eating healthier, then, is about making better choices in how we prepare foods as well as eating portion sizes that are appropriate for our personal nutritional needs.

Jegtvig suggests that the serving size is often a good starting point in judging whats a healthy portion size.

The following information can be used as a guide to help you select healthy portion sizes for several popular Thanksgiving dishes, but your individual needs will vary.

Unless otherwise stated, calorie ranges are estimated based upon data from the Department of Agriculture.

Serving size: 3 ounces

Calories: 120 to 165

Healthier options: Turkey is good. Its a great source of protein without being high in saturated fats, Jegtvig said.

Preparation method does matter, however.

Deep-frying turkey will add more fat and calories. Leaving the skin on will also add to the count. The cut selected matters too.

Your best choice? Roasted breast meat with the skin removed.

Serving size: 1/2 cup

Calories: 110 to 200

Healthier options: Jegtvig advises that adding more vegetables to your stuffing is a good way to make your meal more healthy.

So, with a dish like stuffing, you could add more vegetables to your recipe while going lighter on bread, meat, and added fat.

Serving size: 1/2 cup

Calories: 210 to 240

Healthier options: Use fat-free milk and low-sodium chicken broth instead of whole milk and butter.

Sharon Palmer, a registered dietitian and nutritionist, suggests you could also try adding carrots or celery to the mashed potatoes to lighten them.

Olive oil is also a healthier alternative to butter.

Serving size: 1/4 cup

Calories: 15 to 35

Healthier options: When preparing your gravy, keep in mind that the pan drippings are full of fat (56 grams per cup of gravy). Refrigerate first, and remove the solidified drippings before preparing your gravy.

Jegtvig suggests that you should watch your intake of gravy since its so fatty. Keep your portion small.

Serving size: 1/2 cup

Calories: 89 to 240

Healthier options: According to Campbells, you can substitute Campbells Healthy Request Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup for their regular soup. Use 1 percent milk instead of whole. Substitute 2 tablespoons and 1 cup french fried onions for 1 can of french fried onions.

These changes will greatly reduce the fat and calories compared with the original recipe. You may also use reduced-sodium soy sauce if youre concerned about your sodium intake.

Jegtvig recommends that you could go with something like green beans with almonds and lemon juice instead of a high calorie casserole for an even healthier option.

Serving size: 1/2 cup

Calories: 225 to 290

Healthier options: Substitute low fat milk and cheese in your recipe. Use whole wheat pasta to boost fiber.

Palmer suggests using butternut squash, carrots, or peas to mix in more veggies and lighten up the recipe.

Serving size: 1/2 cup

Calories: 105 to 225

Healthier options: On their own, sweet potatoes are actually a very healthy option.

The key is to go easy on what you add to them. When you add in marshmallow, brown sugar, and butter, this adds significantly to your intake of calories, fat, and sugar.

Cut down on the sweeteners and marshmallows and add fruit, such as dried apricots or peaches, to offer natural sweetness. Also, cut down on the margarine or butter, Palmer said.

Serving size: 1/4 cup

Calories: 110 to 160

Healthier options: Cranberries themselves are very healthy. Theyre low in sugar and carbohydrates while also being high in nutrients and fiber.

When prepared as cranberry sauce, however, they become very high in added sugar. The key to a healthier preparation is to add sweetness by using fruit or a non-sugar sweetener, such as stevia.

Palmer suggests you could also make a fresh cranberry relish, which is very flavorful but with less sugar.

Serving size: 1 roll

Calories: 210 to 270

Healthier options: When it comes to bread, your best option is whole grain breads. Whole grain contains vital nutrients that get stripped out of processed grains. Theyre also higher in fiber.

Palmer suggests keeping the size of rolls small.

Serving size: 1 slice

Calories: 290 to 375

Healthier options: Dr. Michael Greger suggests making such substitutions as pitted dates to eliminate added sugar and whole wheat pie crust for its added nutrition and fiber.

Tofu can substitute eggs and milk to reduce saturated fat and cholesterol, too.

Tyson Fury will beat Deontay Wilder in their February 22, 2020 rematch which could set up a historic heavyweight trilogy.

That is the opinion of Furys promoter Frank Warren, who told Business Insider before Wilder defeated Luis Ortiz by seventh round knockout on Saturday that he expects his fighter to be the first to beat Wilder, unify all of the heavyweight championship titles, and even fight Wilder a third time to conclude their rivalry.

Fury and Wilder have already fought once before, a dramatic 2018 bout which featured a masterclass in boxing by Fury but an exhibition of brutal power by Wilder, who knocked Fury down twice, earning a disputed draw by the judges at ringside.

The former two-weight world champion boxer Carl Frampton recently told Business Insider that Fury won the fight convincingly the first time [and] most people think the same.

Warren agreed with Frampton, and said: Fury won that fight, it was not a good decision at all time. I fancied the fight and fancied him to beat him.

But he had to lose nearly 11 stone [since returning to boxing after a battle against depression]. He wasnt training to fight, he was training to lose weight. But now hes training to fight.

Warren is confident of success in the rematch, and anticipates a trilogy bout. I believe Tyson beats Wilder. Who knows, there might be another fight there.

Sources involved with the rematch negotiations had oft confirmed a rematch deal to Business Insider in the last few months, and on Wednesday the senior boxing writer Dan Rafael confirmed a February 22 fight on ESPN.

The only hold-up to a formal announcement for the heavyweight do-over is that dealmakers are yet to agree on a suitable site, according to ESPN, even though the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is an apparent front-runner to host.

The event would be a joint pay-per-view between Furys broadcaster ESPN and Fox, which is the network Wilder fights on.

Fury has fought twice on ESPN this year, against opponents who were considered easy, or straight-forward, opponents before the contests took place.

Fury knocked out Tom Schwarz in the second round before overcoming a bloody cut that needed 47 stitches to outpoint Otto Wallin on the scorecards.

It begged the question why an opponent ranked in the top 10 was not considered for these fights, ahead of the big Wilder rematch.

Warren said this was all planned to allow ESPN to build Furys name and brand value in the US. The first Wilder bout generated 325,000 pay-per-view sales in the US, but with the recent exposure Fury has had, Warren anticipates a 515% increase of PPV buys for the second fight next year.

The deal with Tyson was to get on a big platform, Warren said. The biggest platform in the States that made sense for us was ESPN+.

Theres 3 million subscribers, its a big platform, and a couple fights make his profile higher. So, by the time the rematch happens with Wilder, the thing will go through the roof and well be looking at 2 million pay-per-view buys in the States.

Wilder has recently won praise for the fight-ending power he possesses in his right hand, dropping and stopping Ortiz with a straight right last weekend.

But Fury, too, is as good a technical and defensive boxer as Wilder is a power puncher. Furys awkward, got a great boxing brain, fast hands, and fast feet, Warren said. He takes people by surprise. Throws punches in awkward angles and he reads fights. He can read a fight very well. Hes a boxing genius. For a heavyweight to be that light on his feet is quite amazing.

The heavyweight championship landscape is currently fractured, with Wilder possessing the WBC title while Andy Ruiz Jr. holds the WBA, WBO, and IBF belts.

There is currently great speculation over who can be the one to unify all the titles, and be the recognized, undisputed heavyweight champion out of all the title holders and contenders like Fury, Wilder, Ruiz Jr., and Anthony Joshua.

If anyones going to unify the belts, Furys definitely the man to do it, Warren said.
