Great Britain to wait on Andy Murray’s fitness as Davis Cup quarter-final with Germany awaits – The Telegraph

Evanss problem has been his relative lack of power. He is only 5ft 9in tall, and on Thursday he was bullied out of the way by Alexander Bublik, a 6ft 6in beanpole who hits both his first serve and second serve at maximum power.
I've played two huge guys who have served well [the first being the Netherlands 6ft 3in Robin Haase] and I just haven't come out on top, said a disconsolate Evans afterwards. If I'm needed again, I'll put my game on the court and try to get us through. If I'm not, I'll be there on the side supporting.
The No 1 German player, Jan-Lennard Struff, is another 6ft 4in slugger. If he ends up playing Edmund on Friday night, as expected, it will be an alpha-male showdown between two heavy-hitters. The doubles, too, will be tough to call.
Jamie Murray and his regular partner, Davis Cup debutant Neal Skupski, saved the team again with a 6-1, 6-4 win over the less well-acquainted combination of Bublik and Kukushkin. But the Germans can field Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies, this years French Open champions.
Penalties cannot decide the outcome of Friday'squarter-final, but no-one would be surprised if the whole shooting match went down to a first-to-seven-point tie-break in the deciding doubles rubber which is effectively the same thing. With any luck, Murray and Skupski wont end up feeling like Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle.

Henry Cavill was told he was ‘chubby’ in James Bond audition – Evening Standard

The hottest luxury and A List news
Henry Cavill is well known for donning a red cape and blue suit as Superman in DCs cinematic universe, however, it turns out that the star once attempted to play another icon: James Bond. In a recent interview with Mens Health, The Witcher star revealed that he tried out for the super spy but was told that he was a little chubby."
Cavill auditioned to be Bond in the mid-00s and had to re-enact one of Sean Connerys Bond scenes dressed in nothing but a towel. Saying that he probably could have prepared better,"Cavill revealed that Casino Royales director Martin Campbell made a comment about his body during the process.
Cavill said, I remember the director, Martin Campbell, saying, Looking a little chubby there, Henry. I didnt know how to train or diet.

He continued, And Im glad Martin said something, because I respond well to truth. It helps me get better.
Cavill wound up losing the role to Daniel Craig, who has played Bond for over a decade now and is set to reprise the role in the upcoming film No Time to Die. He also opened up about the pressure to lose weight and slim down for the film Immortals, in which he explained he had his shirt off for most of the damn time and required him to go on a strict six-month diet and extensive martial arts training."
He said, Its very emotionally taxing. When you add the lack of food and the pressure on top of that, its tough.
(Getty Images)
It was just a drop in the bucket compared to his preparation for his Superman preparation, with the films schedule coordinated around his shirtless scenes."In fact, his Batman v Superman co-star Ben Affleck revealed that he acted as Henrys trainer to help him tone up for the role.
I wouldnt say we worked out so much as I acted as Henrys trainer. I really had to help him increase muscle massbefore my coaching, he looked like Gumby, Affleck said.

Other stars have previously opened up about pressure from Hollywood to lose weight, including Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Lawrence, Margot Robbie and Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner who called it f**ked up in a 2017 interview with Porter.
Lawrence said at a 2017 Elles Women in Hollywood event that she had been told to lose 15 pounds in two weeks and that another actress on the same project was previously fired for not losing the weight fast enough according to People.
Lawrence continued to describe another situation, saying, During this time a female producer had me do a nude line-up with about five women who were much, much thinner than me. We are stood side-by-side with only tape on covering our privates. After that degrading and humiliating line-up, the female producer told me I should use the naked photos of myself as inspiration for my diet.

Cavill will return to the screen in The Witcher, a series based on the popular book series and video game of the same name. It will drop on Netflix on December 20.

Swansea woman using hypnosis to break clients bad habits – Fall River Herald News

SWANSEA A medium iced coffee with pumpkin syrup, extra cream and extra sugar was a regular part of Shirley Bretts day.
Her sugar-laden coffee habit, inability to sleep and diet of unhealthy foods including frequent midnight cookies was all starting to wear on this busy mom and hairstylist.
I just felt unhealthy, she said. I was heavier than Id ever been.
Brett started to worry that if she kept on the same path, shed miss out on her childrens lives. Bretts mom got sick in her early 60s and passed away six years ago.
I needed to do something for myself, Brett said.
One of Bretts customers, Maureen Estes Flanagan, told her how hypnosis had helped her lose 30 pounds.
In fact, Flanagan not only became a believer after her own experience, but a certified hypnotist to complement her career as a social worker.
Hypnosis speaks to the subconscious where passion, obsession and drive are seeded, Flanagan said.
Flanagan, who went from a size 14 to a size 6 dress, said she also ate unhealthy before she underwent hypnosis suggested by her sister.
Ive had a confrontational relationship with food my whole life, Flanagan said. Ive released the battle.
She said hypnosis helped her undo the cravings that led to her weight gain. And she wants to help others do the same.
I believe everyone needs to create their own relationship with food, Flanagan said.
Over the summer, Flanagan completed the 100-hour course with the National Guild of Hypnosis and became a certified consulting hypnotist.
She now runs Joyful Living from her Swansea home and offers sessions to help people lose weight, quit smoking, live sober, enhance sports performance and improve their happiness and success in life with personal development and empowerment.
Brett went to three sessions to lose weight and get healthy.
It was amazing, Brett said. Its relaxing. I could hear her voice and stuff around me. It was very calming.
Flanagan said hypnosis for some is a standalone fix and for others it can supplement weight management classes, addiction counseling or support groups.
Its really about changing behaviors, Flanagan said.
For Brett, the mom of a 10-year old and 26-year old, and manager of Salon 812 on Pleasant Street in Fall River, hypnosis worked.
She lost 22 pounds in two months and joined a gym with her husband.
Brett said she now prepares her own on-the-go snacks, such as celery and boiled eggs, instead of relying on fast-food.
I feel so much better, she said.
Brett said her improvement began after the first session.
She swung by the drive-through for her usual coffee fix, but something happened that she didnt expect.
I got it the same way I always got it and I couldnt drink it, she said. It was too sweet.
And that night, Brett left the cookies in the cabinet.
I got a full nights sleep, she said. This is just a complete, total life change.

Jordan Hasay: I Will Be in the Trials – Runner’s World

Jordan Hasay went into the Chicago Marathon on October 13 in excellent shape, hoping to make a run at the American record in the distance. But about two miles into the race, she tore her left hamstring. She limped past the 5K mark in 22 minutes before dropping out of the race.
It was the bitter end of a tumultuous two weeks. On September 30, her longtime coach, Alberto Salazar, was hit with a four-year ban from track and field for anti-doping violations. Hasay, 28, said she never witnessed anything improper in her time with Salazar and his team, the Nike Oregon Project. On October 11, Nike shut down the Oregon Project, leaving the athletes who had trained with Salazar to work out new coaching and training situations.
The timing of Hasays injury and the coaching upheaval were not ideal: American marathoners are preparing for the Olympic Marathon Trials on February 29, 2020 in Atlanta.
The upheaval has continued this month: On November 7, in an explosive opinion video in The New York Times, Mary Cain, a former teen prodigy who trained with Hasay and others at the Oregon Project, alleged she was emotionally and physically abused in her time with Salazar.
After the Chicago Marathon, Hasay returned home to Arroyo Grande, California, and got an MRI, which revealed the extent of her hamstring teartwo of the three tendons of the hamstring were torn and retracted less than one-half centimeter from the bone. She consulted with an array of doctors, including Hans-Wilhelm Mller-Wohlfahrt, the team doctor of soccer club Bayern Munich who has worked with track stars like Usain Bolt and Paula Radcliffe, to determine whether she should have surgery. (A 2011 ESPN article detailed how elite athletes the world over swear by Mller-Wohlfahrts unconventional methods.) The consensus for Hasay: no surgery.
Im super thankful, it seems to be healing, she said in a phone call with Runners World. We did a repeat MRI. The tear has healed back up. I need to do a lot of work on rehab, strengthening, but structurally its healed up. I will be in the Trials, which is good news.
From Munich, she went to Monaco, where she formalized a relationship with Radcliffe to be her mentor-coach. Radcliffe held the world record in the womens marathon, 2:15:25, for 16 years. The record fell last month to Brigid Kosgei, who ran 2:14:04, at the Chicago Marathon, where Hasay dropped out.
Hasay has long admired Radcliffe. As Hasay was training for her first marathon, Boston in 2017, her late mother used to call Hasay by the pet name Paula. Radcliffe and Hasay first met at the 2017 Chicago Marathon, where Hasay ran 2:20:57 and became the second-fastest American marathoner behind Deena Kastor. Hasay and Radcliffe have kept in touch since then.
Last week, together in Monaco, they sat down and mapped out Hasays training for the next 15 weeks until the Trials. Hasay said she believes shes the first athlete to be coached by Radcliffe and specified that Radcliffe, and not her husband, Gary Lough, who oversees the training of Mo Farah, will be in charge.
Hasay will stay in California and communicate remotely with Radcliffe. Ive always really looked up to her as a role model, Hasay said. Since we first met two years ago in Chicago, weve kept in touch and shes given me a lot of advice. She knows that I have had some very good coaches in the past. Were not going to go in and change a bunch of things. At this point, I mainly need someone to hold me back and make sure I stay injury free. Shes such a kind person.
After two weeks off from running after the Chicago Marathon, Hasay has returned to running almost pain free, she said, although the hamstring feels tight at faster speeds. On November 19, she did a hill workout.
Hasay said Nike staff were incredibly supportive of her as she considered new coaches, and they were open to her having a coach who didnt have a relationship with the company if that is what she wanted. Radcliffe, though, was a Nike-sponsored athlete throughout her career and maintains a relationship with the company.
She is in the process of selling her home in Beaverton, Oregon, near Nike headquarters, and she will live with her father in Arroyo Grande, California, until she eventually buys a home in that area. She is more suited to the climate there, she said, where it is sunny and warm year-round, than the rainy winters of the Pacific Northwest. She also said the community has supported her since she began running at age 12. Being home will add a lot of happiness, she said.
When asked about Cain, Hasay said she knew her teammate was struggling during her 10 months training in Portland with the Oregon Project, but she didnt know the extent of the problems.
I was pretty shocked with the video, Hasay said. Obviously I feel really sad and I texted her and said Im really sorry. That if I knew that it was that bad, if there was anything I could have done, I just apologize.
Hasay said she and Cain were fairly close but she had no idea that Cain was cutting herself, as she said in the Times video. Cain also said Salazar was constantly trying to get her to lose weight to hit an arbitrary number, 114 pounds.
Hasay said she thought Cains youth and the intensity of the training and the program were a poor combination, but she expressed sympathy for both Cain and Salazar.
Its so sad, everyone was trying their best, though, she said. I really think you cant point fingers and its really easy from the outside to kick Alberto under the bus. People make mistakes. He could have handled it at times differently. He really was doing his best. He wasnt trying to cause any of the problems that she described. I sympathize with both sides.
Thats why its hardI havent commented on itI dont really have a side. I didnt experience what she experienced, but I can see how it was so difficult. I think that her message is a good one, addressing these issues, they are important, I think its good overall that were looking at some of things.
Hasay continued that when an athlete is still growing and going through puberty, getting to a certain weight is difficult. Older athletes on the team, she said, were able to push back in discussions with Salazar on weight.
Alberto, if you ask me is he obsessed about weight? Yes, but hes obsessed about everything, she said. He wanted to cut my hair [to reduce drag], he wanted me to wear a wetsuit in the Boston Marathon. Its just every little detail is covered and weight happens to be one of those things.
Salazar told Hasay she needed to gain weight at times. Hes told me, You dont need to be this lean all year. Id like you to go back up. Weve had discussions. I think when youre older and more experienced, you can speak up. Its hard when shes so young and still growing. It was just the whole situation wasnt the right fit, unfortunately.

Obese teens’ quality of life improves after weight loss surgery – Reuters

(Reuters Health) - Obese teens who have surgery to lose weight report better quality of life, less joint pain and fewer physical limitations after their operations than before, a new study suggests.
Researchers followed 242 obese teens who had so-called metabolic and bariatric surgery to lose weight over three years, starting when they were 17 years old, on average. Prior to surgery, half of the teens had a body mass index (BMI) of at least 50, making them severely obese; two-thirds had musculoskeletal pain and joint pain and half had poor physical function.
Three years after surgery, the teens average reduction in BMI was 27%, which meant they were still obese. However, previous research has shown that a BMI reduction of just 5% to 10% is enough to result in meaningful improvements in health and quality of life.
And in the current study, researchers found that every 10% reduction in BMI was associated with 6% lower odds of the teens having musculoskeletal pain and 10% lower odds of having joint pain.
Metabolic and bariatric surgery leads to large and sustained reductions in joint pain and improvements in physical function in adolescents with severe obesity over 3 years, Dr. Sharon Bout-Tabaku of Nationwide Childrens Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and colleagues write in Pediatrics.
These improvements will allow teenagers to move, be more functional, and participate in physical activity to improve their joint health and maintain their weight loss, the study team notes.
More than one in five American teens are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Teens are considered obese when their BMI is at or above the 95th percentile for youth of the same age and sex.
An online child and teen BMI calculator is available from the CDC (here: bit.ly/2QC2CWN).
Adolescent obesity is associated with chronic joint pain and with irreversible joint damage, the researchers note. But even as a growing number of obese teens get metabolic and bariatric surgery to lose weight, research to date hasnt offered a clear picture of how these operations impact future joint health.
In the current study, the decline in BMI wasnt directly associated with changes in poor physical function three years after surgery.
But young people who complained of joint pain after the surgery were 21% more likely than those who didnt to also report poor physical function.
The study wasnt designed to prove whether or how surgical weight loss might directly improve joint pain or musculoskeletal pain in obese teens.
One limitation of the study is that the data came from a research project designed to study improvements in weight and obesity-related disease, not joint pain, the study authors note.
Another drawback is that data on physical improvements was based on patient surveys, not on objective measures of physical function or body mechanics.
Even so, the results suggest that improved joint health can be added to the list of potential health benefits of weight loss surgery, the authors conclude.
Adolescence represents a window of opportunity for caregivers to implement exercise and behavioral supports pre-and post-surgery to maintain long-term weight and joint health benefits, the study team writes. Future research should be focused on studying the relationship among weight loss, biomechanical and systemic inflammatory mechanisms, performance measures, and biomarkers to identify, target, and treat adolescents who are obese and at risk for knee osteoarthritis.

‘Today’ Star Hoda Kotb Got Very Real on Instagram After Revealing Her Weight Loss Plan – GoodHousekeeping.com

Hoda Kotb is so wonderfully relatable when it comes to the struggle of trying to eat better.
During Monday's fourth hour of the Today show, Hoda and her fellow co-host Jenna Bush Hager stepped on a scale while announcing their intent to try out intermittent fasting, a popular weight-loss diet among celebrities that asks you to restrict when and how much you eat during a specific period of time. The pros and cons of the plan have been hotly debated in the nutrition world, but if there's one thing everyone can agree on, it's that you should consult with your doctor first before giving it a go.
To launch their experiment, Hoda and Jenna tried out each other's scales to make sure the numbers they were seeing were accurate. Hoda's weight was recorded at 158 pounds, while Jenna's scale read 171 pounds.
A day after revealing her weight on the show, Hoda posted a video of herself sweating it out on a stair machine at the gym. In that same post, though, she also shared a picture of an Oreo cookie and wrote in the caption, "Me yesterday: HEY: 158 lbs ... I am coming for you! Me after workout: swipe [to the cookie picture]."
To show solidarity, Hoda's fans penned encouraging and hilarious words to the NBC morning show anchor. "Im with ya, girl!! " one fan wrote. "I worked out yesterday and came home to eat 4 cookies . Thats a balanced diet, right?" another joked.
Meanwhile, Jenna (who just gave birth to her son in August) hasn't posted anything on Instagram about her progress just yet. With that being said though, the mother-of-three spoke up about Monday's weigh in on Tuesday and clarified that she's doing this more to "be healthy" instead of to lose weight.
"I was reminded why I don't weigh myself yesterday because I was playing with my kids, and I kept having that one number in my head," Jenna explained. "And I'm like, 'You know what? No, no, no, no.' I don't want life to be controlled by a scale."
Whatever happens, we wish Jenna and Hoda the best of luck in their quest.

Read More..Harriette Cole: Ive been working so hard that Im getting fat – The Mercury News

DEAR HARRIETTE: In recent years, I have gone up a size almost every year. Its awful. I have been working like crazy at an office job that doesnt allow me to work out much. But this is not good. I know its not healthy for me to have put on so much weight.
I recently started buying stretchy clothes so that I wouldnt have to keep upgrading my wardrobe, but I know thats not a real solution. What do you recommend to help keep off the pounds when Im too busy to get in the squats?
Need to Lose Weight
DEAR NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT: It is time to evaluate your priorities. Yes, a time-consuming job is understandable, but if you dont have your health, your fancy job wont matter at all. You should make time to exercise at least three times a week.Do your best to carve out time for this.
To lose weight, though, the biggest culprit that health educators point to is what you put between your lips what you eat or drink. The number of calories that you ingest daily has a direct effect on how much weight you gain, maintain or lose. What you can do right now is to change your eating habits. Cut down on carbs. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Drink water. Dont eat late at night. If you follow these simple rules, you can start to shed pounds. Good luck!
DEAR HARRIETTE: A new restaurant just opened up in my neighborhood, right next door to a restaurant that has been dying on the vine for years. I am friendly with the owner of the old spot, and I feel kind of bad going to the new place, but I want to check it out. It is drawing crowds of new customers, and, as they say, theres a lot of heat around it.
But its sad and awkward to see the old restaurant sitting there empty. I feel bad when they see me go over to the new place. I have stopped going to their place because Im not sure what to say. What should I do?
Split Loyalty
DEAR SPLIT LOYALTY: If you still like the old place, dont give it up entirely just because a new one has joined the block. Be brave and go to both. When you visit at your friends place, do not feel that you have to give a report about the new place. Instead, just be present and with them during your time together.
If they ask you questions about the new establishment, tell the truth. Be careful not to bad-mouth the other place because you are with your friend. Be neutral and honest. If you notice things they can do that may enhance their own experience, you can share, but be careful. You do not want to be in the position of savior. Stay in the role of friend.
You can tell your friend that you will always appreciate them and be a customer, but you do intend to visit the other restaurant from time to time.
