Astronauts Enjoy Space Veggies and Look to the Future of Cosmic Salads – Space.com

As astronauts harvest and munch on mizuna, or Japanese mustard greens, aboard the International Space Station, the future of humans growing their own food in space grows brighter.

In 2015, astronauts aboard the space station grew a crop of red lettuce the first food grown in space. But "space food" and the prospect of growing viable crops and plants in space has been in development for some time.

"For many years," NASA plant physiologist Ray Wheeler told Space.com, NASA has "been interested in growing plants as a bioregenerative approach for life support, and the plants would provide food and oxygen and could remove carbon dioxide."

Now, with the new experiment Veg-04B with the Vegetable Production System (Veggie), a plant growth unit on the space station, this capability has taken another big step forward. The experiment is testing how the quality of light and fertilizer affects the microbial safety, nutritional value and taste of a mizuna crop. And this past week (on Nov. 13), astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch completed the second of three harvests of this mildly tangy, leafy vegetable.

As the space station's Twitter account shared on Nov. 18, "A portion of the leaves were consumed by the crew while the rest were stowed in a freezer for later analysis on Earth."

Ultimately, the goal of experiments like Veg-04B is to create reliable and sustainable food production in space. Theoretically, future human settlers on Mars and the moon could grow at least a portion of their diet themselves. This would provide fresh, crunchy produce with optimal nutritional value for astronauts and make it so that they wouldn't have to rely entirely on supply missions from Earth.

"Over time, that packaged diet it loses quality and it loses nutrition. Some of the vitamins will degrade," Gioia Massa, principal investigator for Veggie, told Space.com. Additionally, while astronauts on the space station have access to food regularly sent via cargo missions, "astronauts tend to lose weight," Massa added. "We think that this weight loss is due to menu fatigue, and so we postulate that adding fresh produce to the diet could help with that."

By continuing to experiment with new crops in the microgravity environment on the space station, researchers can see how, like with the mizuna, plants retain their nutritional value and taste, and also how they grow. With controlled experiments on Earth, scientists can get a good sense of how new types of plants might grow in space, but they can't know for sure how they will develop over time until they are up on the station.

Now, while mizuna is a leafy green like the red lettuce first grown in space, Massa explained that they have big plans for upcoming space crops. She said that, while they started with leafy greens, they plan to move on to tomatoes, peppers, nutrient-packed microgreens and more. Wheeler added that eventually they might even grow small fruits like strawberries with dwarf fruit trees.

Massa said that they do consult the astronauts about what crops they would like to grow. And, surprisingly, while many have suggested foods like corn, she said, others have suggested flowers. For now, while they develop experiments with new crops, Massa said that they are considering, in the future, sending up a variety of seeds that could be in stock and available to the crew, so that they could select what they want to grow on orbit.

Who:Kathy Novak, 34, Department of Defense employeeLives: AnnapolisHeight: 58Pounds lost: [I]weighed nearly 400 pounds at the age of 19. Honestly, I dont weigh myself nearly as much as I used to. If I had to take a guess, based on composition, Id say [I weigh around] 185-190 [pounds].How long it took: There isnt really a time stamp for me, as this has become a lifestyle. [But] I started giving myself a chance to follow through [with fitness] at age 19, so about 15 years.

I was stubborn [when it came to losing weight]. It had to be when I was ready, which Ive learned is really never. It was more about being on my termsI didnt want to do it for anyone else. [But ultimately,] the concern from my family was enough.I met with the nurse practitioner, and she gave me a list of foods I could choose from. No measurements, just a this-instead-of-that sort of deal. I changed just my eating, and in three weeks had lost 34 pounds. Sure, it was water weight initially. But seeing progress in such a short period of timethat was important. That, for me, meant I was really capable of this. From there, I thought wow, I wonder what would happen if I started exercising? So I set a goal to lose 50 pounds by my 20th birthday. My best guy friend Daniel and I started going to the Drill Hall every day.

The Drill Hall was the perfect place to start. I would put Kelly Clarksons Breakaway album on and hit the treadmill. I would walk for the whole album, and after a few weeks, I increased the speed, then the incline. Some days were more difficult than others, of course, but I showed up every day. Some days, I got through those 45-to-50 minutes by spelling out every word on the TV in the captions. Backwards, forwardswhatever it took to get my mind off [it] and through it. I followed that up with weights. Looking back now, I had some idea of what I was doing, but not really. At that time, it didnt matter. I was moving.

After several months of this routine, it was time to move to St. Augustine, Florida [for college].After a couple of years, I was not feeling like I used to after leaving the gym. I had also yo-yod in weight, gaining 45-to-50 pounds, losing it, gaining 20-to-30 pounds, losing it. I was working so hard and knew I had to do something else. I ran into a friend and he said that I needed to try CrossFitit had changed his life. Thenext day I started a whole new life thanks to CrossFit. I showed up every day, sometimes two times a day. After a few months, I competed in my first of many CrossFit competitions.

Starting CrossFit also [meant I] started nine-week-long Paleo challenges.The challenges quickly evolved into lifestyle changes.My Paleo is not what people envision Paleo asIm not downing mass amounts of bacon, steak, and almond butter. The primary focus is eating clean and as unprocessed as possible: lots of veggies and protein.I joined a nutrition team, Working Against Gravity. It is a program focused on intake, but not calorically. [It focuses on] the right amount of macronutrients tailored to your fitness goals and regimens.

My family and friends, [as well as] the people [I met who became] inspired by my story and started to give themselves chances, all because they saw through me that change is possible. To think that if I ever gave up, Id be letting so many people beyond myself down.I never wanted to be in a place of just doing something [because of how it] looked to someone else. Lifestyle changes, no matter what theyre for, have to be because you believe in them, because they inspire you to be better. We are here for a purpose much bigger than ourselves.

Honestly, after I changed the way I ate, I really grew to be excited about the food choices I was making every day. Food was more than taste, it was fuel for my performance. Having a great homemade meal or trying a new recipe is a splurge for me.Ive learned to appreciate the process and the patience that accompanies prepping good, healthy meals.

I have always been fairly confident and outspoken, but the mental grit that has grown through this process has allowed me to flourish in so many other areas. I believe that being underestimated had a direct impact on my professional and personal development. As I pushed myself in my workouts, I was finding it easier to push myself at work, to be more forward and confident in what I said and did. I stopped second guessing my abilities beyond just what I was doing at the gym. I started telling myself I could and quit letting the reasons why I shouldnt try take over.

I didnt like how I thought about myselfnot physically, but my abilities.I love that Ive been capable of making the most important change of all: Ive changed my mind and thought processes in so many ways. Im so thankful for the peace of mind I have now, the resilient mindset that this lifestyle has brought to my life, and the ability to see the opportunity and path forward, no matter what. There are only as many limits as you set for yourself. When you envision your capabilities being limitless, no matter what is going on, [and] see the silver lining in everythinglife is great. Im thankful to be living it as fully as possible.

You have to be willing to give yourself the chance to be uncomfortable and to fight for it. Find something you enjoy every day [and] that youll look forward to. The minute it feels like an obligation, you will resent the process and, to be honest, you probably will quit. Once you commit to a routine like thismaking sure you dont make excuses for yourself, working out no matter what, making the better choicesits more natural.Its all about choices.

How to lose weight like this guy who lost 28 kgs by making these two small changes in his lifestyle – GQ India – What a man’s got to do

Nothing good a lot of money, a great body or your target weight loss goal will ever come easy. But that doesnt mean that good things are impossible to achieve. A little obstacle or an unconventional halt only makes things interesting and often even help you become a better version of yourself. 22-year-old Prayas Mahajan tells us that his nothing good comprised two things: lose weight (fast) and build a kickass body.

I had a simple thought in my mind I wanted to change the way I looked in order to attain a great physique (a physique that I dreamt of!). So, without wasting any time, I commenced on a weight loss journey to trim from 110 kgs to 82 kgs, he says. Actually, I lost a majority of my bodys excess fat in 6 months by following the below weight loss plan, and since then I have consecutively been working towards bettering my form to reach a step closer to my dream bod, he adds.

To lose weight, I made two very simple yet important changes in my lifestyle. One: Completely alienate sugar and fried food from my diet. Two: Cultivate patience.

Initially, all I wanted to do was to lose as much weight as possible and as quickly as possible. I started hitting the gym regularly and also learnt the importance of nutrition, but it wasnt easy. I hail from a Punjabi family, and all our conversations are always centred around our next meal! I grew up having no proper knowledge of nutrition. So, when I started reading about nutrition and cultivating healthier eating habits to get fit, I realised that what you eat amounts to almost 70 per cent of the change you want to see in your body."

"Prior to this realisation, like many weight loss amateurs, I too had this perception that one could eat whatever they wanted as long as they worked out like a crazy person in the gym. Once I was able to see and understand past this myth, fitness became a part and parcel of my lifestyle. Fitness is not a destination but a process. I made changes to my diet, and started seeing some wonderful changes in my physique.

"A diet plan is very specific to a person's age, height, weight, training type, etc. But this is what worked for me."

Early morning (7:00 am): A banana and a cup pf black coffee before working out

Breakfast (9:30 am): An omelette made from 2 whole eggs and 4 egg whites + cheese with watermelon and papaya (when available)

Mid-day snacks (12:00 pm): A serving of fruits and nuts

Lunch (2:00 pm): 150-200 grams of chicken cooked in low oil or grilled along with veggies and rice

Evening snack (between 3-5:30 pm): A serving of fruits and some nuts

Dinner (9:00 pm): Grilled chicken/fish with a bowl of soup/rice and veggies

Notably, I keep changing my diet as per my goals (bulking muscle, fat loss, etc). And, since my end goal was never weight loss; it was to build a lean and muscular physique, which is extremely hard for someone who used to weigh 110 kgs, I keep changing my workout routines as well. But, the below basic workout regime is very effective for anyone whos new to the gym.

"Each day should commence with warm up and stretching for almost 10 minutes, followed by this workout plan":

Flat Bench Press- 10x4 Go as heavy as you can with correct form

Incline Dumbbell Press- 10x4

Incline Chest Fly- 10x4

Cable crossovers- 10x4

Decline Bench press- 10x4

3 sets of pull ups- as many reps as possible

Close grip lat pull down- 10x4

Single arm dumbbell rows- 10x4

Deadlift- 8x4 as heavy as possible with right form

Back extension- 10x3

Wide grip lat pulldown- 10x4

Good mornings- 10x3

Cardio -

2km running

4km rowing (rowing machine)

20 minutes cycling

Abs -

Hanging knee raises- 10x4

Plank 1 minute x 4

Jack Knives- 10x4

Squats- 8x4

Leg curl- 10x3

Goblet squats- 10x3

Walking lunges- 10x4 for each leg

Calf raises- 10x3

I have been working out (minimum 5-6 days a week) consistently for the past 4 years now. I have learnt from my mistakes, have done a lot of research as well as watched a lot of videos on YouTube to gain knowledge and insight to better my workouts, diet and overall health. I personally owe everything in my life to my transformation. It has helped my develop confidence, manage my time better and also brought so much discipline and consistency in my life that every day I take small steps to become a better version of myself.

"I have been able to maintain my weight by trying to keep a track of what I eat and completely avoid fried food. I like to indulge in sweets, so I have a bite here and there, but that's the end of it. I try to clock 10,000 steps daily and also workout 6 days a week. I prioritise sleep and try to get at least 7 hours of it and consume 2-3 litres of water every day.

The first and foremost thing for anyone who intends to make a change is to be patient. Changes dont happen overnight and all the years of following a bad lifestyle will require some time to undo. Small consistent efforts every day will go a long way for anyone to reach their goal. Also, the only person you need to compare yourself with is yourself. There are no shortcuts. Please dont fall for traps such as - lose weight in 30 days, slimming tea, fat burners and steroids. The only way you can lose weight by having green tea alone is if you yourself go and pluck the leaves!

I think the most important part of my journey is the chase. I have this virtually impossible physique in mind (my hero). I know I can never attain it, but thats what keeps me going. Every single day, doing what I have to get things done. I think its very important to keep something not easily attainable because ultimately not having achieved that level is what pushes me every day to outdo myself.

Weight loss: The 5 ways to burn fat while you SLEEP according to science – The Sun

WITH Christmas just around the corner, most people have resigned themselves to the fact they're bound to pile on the pounds.

However, winter doesn't have to be synonymous with weight gain.

With science on our side, there are some little things you can do to make to turn your body into an effective fat burning machine while you sleep.

In particular, small lifestyle changes like standing up more or drinking more water can make a significant difference to how many calories you burn each day.

Here, we take you through several simple steps to maximise weight loss - with proven research by scientists.

A recent study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that standing and sitting more frequently can lead to relatively fast, and low effort weight loss.

In particular, they found that standing versus sitting for six hours a day would help a ten stone person burn an extra 54 calories a day.

Add it up over the course of a year, and thats equal to nearly half a stone, the researchers say.

Plus, previousstudieshave shown that standing burns about nine additional calories per hour compared to sitting.

That said, researchers cautioned that you shouldn't rely on standing alone to shed pounds: "Whether such a small difference in [energy expenditure] will truly translate into long-term weight loss is yet to be proved."

Feeling stressed over a long period of time can increase the hormone cortisol, which directly influences fluid retention and water weight.

Scientists say it also increase a hormone, known as the antidiuretic or ADH, which sends signals to your kidneys telling them how much water to pump back into your body.

Managing your stress levels will help you maintain a normal level of both ADH and cortisol - vital for long-term health and disease risk.

A recent study revealed that short spurts of intense exercise are better for weight loss and burns more fat than workouts that takes double the time

Researchers found that 23 minutes of high intensity interval training was more effective than 41 minutes of aconventional workout.

It led to 29 per cent more weight loss than traditional gym sessions.

NHS tips for weight loss success

The NHS has shared six actions that will start you on your journey towards a healthy weight:

Steven Ward, CEO of fitness industry body UK active, said: These figures show the positive impacts of interval training on reducing weight and, with Britain battling a grave obesity crisis, this research should be welcomed.

Typically, HIIT involves 30 seconds of intense effort, such as sprinting, cycling or doing burpees, followed by short recovery periods.

It may seem a bit contradictory, but one of thebest ways to lose water weight is to actually drink more water.

That's because if you're constantly dehydrated, your body tends to retain more water in an attempt to prevent its water levels getting too low.

Water also boosts your metabolism, cleanses your body of waste and acts as an appetite suppressant, experts say.

Guidelines suggest about two litres per day, but it can vary from person to person, so simply drink when you're thirsty and stop when you feel well hydrated.

You can usually use your urine colour as an indicator of hydration - if it's light yellow or fairly clear then you're well hydrated.

When it's dark yellow or amber then you need to be drinking more water.

"Fail to prepare and you prepare to fail" - and that's totally true with dieting.

Spend one day a week working out what you'll eat for the other days and make batches of grub, so you're not having to bother with cooking when you come back from work.

Prep your breakfast and lunch the night before to take to work and you'll save a tonne of cash - and inches around your waist - on shop/cafe bought food.

Sports nutritionist Scott Baptie also recommends dieters (and actually, anyone interested in healthy eating),should "prepare for an alien invasion", by stocking up on healthy food that you can access at all times.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 An adorable black-and-while tubby tabby dubbed Britains fattest cat has been put on a strict diet after she shocked rescue staff with her unusual weight.

The four-year-old Paisley weighs in at a whopping 9.5kg, double the weight of a healthy cat.

According to Metro UK, the chubby feline was sent to the rescue home after her owner couldnt cope anymore.

It was also reported that staff at the Cats Protections National Cat Adoption Centre in West Sussex have to help her clean herself as she has become too big to do it by herself.

The centres deputy manager Tania Marsh said she was shocked when she first saw Paisley.

When I saw her, it took my breath away. Shes the fattest cat Ive ever seen.

Ive been with Cats Protection for 13 years and we get some cats on the larger side sometimes but nothing of this extent, she added.

It's thought that Paisleys massive bulk comes from being overfed by her previous owner, combined with a lack of exercise and poor diet.

Marsh also confirmed that Paisleys former owners gave her up for adoption last month and she has already found a new owner.

Paisley is now on a stern vet-prescribed diet to help her slim down in a controlled way, which has already showed some results.

Despite the positive progress, Marsh said Paisley was still at risk of developing diabetes and needed to continue her diet.

When Paisley goes to her new home, she'll have to maintain the diet. No treats are allowed, she added.

Paisleys food is specially formulated to have less calories and it allows her to feel full for a longer period of time.

Regular checks with the vet will also be needed as we need to make sure she doesnt lose weight too quickly, otherwise she could develop a fatty liver, said Marsh.

Agriculture impacts diets of wild mammals, study shows – ZME Science

Expanding agriculture can not only affect the diversity and abundance of wildlife but also alter the diet and habitat of wild mammals, especially those living in fragmented forest areas near crops or pastures, according to new research.

The study, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), analyzed how changes that agriculture affect the diet of wild mammals, proving the hypothesis that deforestation and forest fragmentation are not necessarily the main consequences of expanding crops and cattle.

Forest remnants and the agricultural matrix arent separate. Theres an interface between these areas. Its hardly news that animals need to find food in plantations, but this practice hadnt been quantified until now. I should stress that the diet in question isnt ideal. Its a matter of survival, said Marcelo Magioli, the lead author.

Magioli and his fellow researchers looked at stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes in the fur of the animals, a method that allows them to know the kind of food eaten in the last three months. They used hair traps and collection of droppings so as not to alter the animals analyzed, many of them threatened with extinction.

They collected samples in four areas of the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo, two near croplands in Campinas and Botucatu and two in conserved areas in stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. The samples were from 29 species of mammals and of all the samples taken more than half were from animals living in human-modified areas.

From previous studies using GPS collars and camera traps, we knew the animals moved through these areas, Magioli said regarding their research. However, stable isotope analysis told us where they were feeding and how important each food source was in their diet.

The results showed that 34.5% of the animals fed only with agricultural resources from human-modified areas, while 67.5% survived on forest resources. Frugivores and insectivores ate the same no matter where they lived, while herbivores and omnivores were the most affected, eating mainly agricultural resources.

Species like the cougar, capybara, brocket deer, ocelot and crab-eating raccoon where some of the ones mentioned in the study for having adapted their diets because of the agricultural expansion. The margays, a small wild cat, for example, eat animals that live near sugarcane plantations.

Our findings point to the need for more favorable agricultural management to support these animals and underscore the importance of the Brazilian Forest Code and of maintaining legal reserves and permanent conservation areas [APPs], Katia Mara Ferraz, co-author, said.

According to a new survey, we basically "write off" the end of the year when it comes to our health and our diets.

41% of people use the holidays as a reason to punt on healthy habits, and one in three have already started postponing those habits until January.

The survey also found 47% of people say they already know they'll give in and break their diet during the holiday season. The top foods that we break our diet for are cookies . . . pies and cakes . . . and home-cooked holiday meals.

30% of people say they've had a moment during the holidays where they've unbuttoned their pants because they ate too much.

And overall, the average American will gain SIX pounds over the next month-and-a-half. That's the same amount of weight we packed on last year.
