How to prevent the weight you’ve lost from returning – Honolulu Star-Advertiser

Oprah Winfrey is one of the worlds most famous yo-yo dieters. She lost 67 pounds in 1988; by late 1990 she had regained most of that weight. In 1994 she was thin again and she completed the Marine Corps Marathon. But by 2008 when she hit 200-plus pounds, she wrote in O Magazine that she felt really uncomfortable! Since then shes lost 42 pounds and hopes to never have to try to lose weight again.

Down and up. Down and up. Its a hard pattern to break, and one that millions of Americans experience annually. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from 2013 to 2016 around 56% of women and 42% of men tried to lose weight. But research shows that in the first year after dieting, most folks regain 33% to 66% of the weight they lost, and almost all the weight is regained within five years. Thats hard on your spirit, your clothes budget and your body!

Some studies have shown that yo-yo dieting increases your risk for heart disease and stroke, leads to added weight gain and raises your risk for a variety of health problems related to chronic inflammation. It can also lead to long-term loss of muscle mass if you dont eat enough lean protein to fight it off. That makes you weaker and lowers your metabolism, making it easier to regain weight.

WHY MAINTAINING WEIGHT LOSS IS SO HARD

Extreme action (super food deprivation, precipitous weight loss, over-exercising) leads to an equal and opposite reaction (indulgence in comfort foods, sedentary behavior and a physiological reaction where the body thinks, Yikes! Im starving; feed me more!). That causes weight rebound.

4 WAYS TO MAINTAIN WEIGHT LOSS

1. Learn a stress management technique and practice it daily. People who manage stress successfully lose weight without even trying. Meditation is useful for easing stress and focusing your determination.

2. Lose weight slowly (a half- to one pound a week) by changing your eating habits and increasing your activity level. That lets your body your behavior patterns and metabolism adjust so that youre less likely to regain lost weight.

3. Change your relationship to food. Theres no ironclad diet that is the key to losing and keeping off excess weight. Moderation within some easy-to-follow guidelines does the trick.

>> Go for a plant-centered diet; eat lean animal protein and fish; enjoy healthy oils from nuts, olive oil; and choose fiber-rich foods like 100% whole grains and produce. But stay flexible. Enjoy your options.

>> Identify when you use food for emotional comfort. As you reach for that box of cookies, ask yourself, Am I bored? Anxious? Sad? Then make sure to have snack alternatives like nuts and pre-cut veggies around. Also try activities to ease those emotions: Take a walk, call a friend or write in a diary.

>> Learn to cook new dishes. Spend time reading through recipes online. Pick one a week thats tasty and healthy. Make shopping a fun excursion. Get your kids and partner involved. Have a friend over to try your creation.

>> Do not eat after 6:30 p.m., eat your biggest meal at midday and have breakfast at least 13 hours after dinner.

4. Move more; build muscle mass.

>> Its never too late to gain benefits from physical activity, so start with whatever makes you comfortable and build endurance slowly. Every week, try to increase your efforts by 10%. Do you walk for 20 minutes a day? Then go for 22 minutes. Your ultimate goal is 300 minutes of physical activity a week. With 22 minutes x 7 days a week = 154 thats more than halfway there!

>> Diversify your activities. Combine walking and aerobics with bouts of intense effort, strength building, agility and balance skills (yoga, jumping, Pilates). There are enough choices to find something that is enjoyable every day.

Once you have lost weight, adopt these guidelines and youre on your way to a lifetime of better health and happiness.

Alfred Dawes | Are you really on a diet? – Jamaica Gleaner

I face them every day: Frustrated patients who are trying to lose weight that just doesnt seem able to come off. They try every diet from cabbage soup to ketogenic. Expensive injections and shakes work for a while but the weight just keeps coming back. They exercise but there is barely a flicker on the scale. What am I doing wrong, Doc?

To understand weight gain and weight loss, there is a simple formula that you must learn:

Weight change = calories consumed calories burned.

It is as simple as that. If you consume more calories than you are burning, those excess calories will be stored as fat. If you are burning more calories than you are taking in, only then will you lose weight. The big problem that most of us have is that we underestimate how many calories we are consuming, and overestimate how much we burn through exercise. The second major issue is that we think we are in a caloric deficit when we are not.

Let us look at both of these impediments to weight loss.

If we were to religiously track how many calories we consume for the day, most of us would be in for a surprise. One often repeated phrase is I hardly eat. While that may be true in terms of meal frequency and size, the source of the calories can be the cause for a caloric surplus.

Most nutritional labels only give the caloric values of the serving size. But there are multiple servings in a container. For example, per serving for a tin of corned beef, there are 130 calories. That seems low until you realise that there are six servings in the regular size tin. That is 780 calories.

The calories in a pack of crackers is not the 120 you see per serving, but 420 calories. So a half a tin of bully beef and crackers is over 800 calories. And you havent drank the juice that could be another 200 calories. Thats 1,000 calories from one light meal.

A round bun as a snack 450 calories; sweet biscuit or chips, easily 400 calories. Sandwiches can be calorie dense when the condiments and type of meat is factored in. And then there is bread. Two slices, 260 calories, and we havent added the butter yet.

Even fruits and shakes with their high sugar content are hidden sources of calories. A salad, with croutons, dressings, cheese, etc., can be over 1,000 calories.

You may be eating healthy, but one snack or bad meal totally destroys your caloric deficit. Many persons fall into the trap where they feel they are eating healthy but they are still taking in too many calories.

On the other side of the equation, we overestimate how much we burn at the gym. Are we looking at the time spent working out or the quality of the effort? You could be in the gym for an hour and burn only 200-300 calories. You feel hungry after the workout or buy into the idea that you must fuel your body with sports drinks or more food.

What actually happens is that you cancel out the calories burned and are back at square one.

Exercises such as walking and running burn more calories the heavier you are. But as you get slimmer, there is less weight for your muscles to move around so you require less energy, that is, you burn less calories for the same distance than when you were bigger.

To understand how many calories we need to eat and burn, we need to know what is our Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). The BMR is the minimum number of calories required to run our bodies when at rest.

Organs such as the brain, heart, liver and kidneys need calories to fully function. Our skeletal muscle primarily burns fat at rest and is the contributor to the BMR we can increase consciously. Depending on your age, sex and weight, your BMR can range from 1,200 to 2,500 calories per day on average.

Our daily activities such as walking and any manual labour add to this BMR and we get our total caloric requirements per day. The big problem is that we do not know what is our BMR and so we overestimate how many calories we require for daily activities.

I myself was surprised that my BMR was 10 per cent lower than what was expected for my age and size. For others, its even worse. You may be looking at nutritional labels giving calories as a percentage of a 2,000cal/day diet when your BMR is only 1,500 cals/day!

One of the main issues why I dont endorse crash diets and teas is that they lead to a severe caloric deficit. When your body is in such a deficit, it reaches for any available stored energy. That could be fat and protein from skeletal muscle. If you are not protecting your muscles with enough protein in your diet, your muscle mass shrinks, and with that its contribution to your BMR. Your daily caloric requirements fall and as soon as you are off the diet, the weight returns with a vengeance.

Applying these principles in a consistent manner instead of quick fixes can lead to long-term weight loss in the overweight but not the morbidly obese. That is where it gets complex. Ill get into that in my next article.

Tips on How to Lose Weight with Apple Cider Vinegar – Daily Hawker

Apple cider vinegar is made with a two-step fermentation process.

Initially, the apples are cut or crushed and combined with yeast. Then the fermentation helps to convert their sugar into alcohol. Second, bacteria is added to ferment the alcohol into acetic acid.

Apple cider vinegar is made with apples that cut or crushed and combined with yeast to convert their sugar into alcohol. Then bacteria are added to ferment the alcohol into acetic acid. Not only is Apple Cider Vinegar a totally low-calorie solution but apple cider also contains potassium along with amino acids and antioxidants that promote a healthy gut!

Since acetic acid is the main active component of apple cider vinegar, around 5 to 6% of apple cider vinegar consists of acetic acid. It also contains water and trace amounts of other acids, such as malic acid.

One tablespoon (15 ml) of apple cider vinegar contains about three calories and virtually no carbs.

WARNING:Its great that you want to lose weight with Apple Cider Vinegar but taking more thanrecommended is dangerous.

Because of potentially harmful effects at higher dosages, you can experience drug interactions or the erosion of tooth enamel.

Its also best to start off with 1 teaspoon (5 ml) per meal to see how you tolerate it.

Its important to mix it with water, as undiluted vinegar may burn the inside of your mouth and esophagus.

When you type in how to lose weight with Apple Cider Vinegar, the articles youll see are endless. This is because various doctors and nutritionists can all verify that Apple Cider Vinegar benefits the body in many ways. One of which is weight loss.

The real reason for why Apple Cider Vinegar works is because it contains Acetic Acid.

The pH of our bodies varies depending on which body part we focus on. For example, our urine has to have a different pH and our saliva has to have a different pH. The different parts of our body have different levels of pH. The key is to know your blood pH level and adjust accordingly.

Did you know that heartburn, acid reflux and indigestion are ALL caused by the stomach becoming tooalkaline. Nop, its not too acidic, in fact it is actually too alkaline!

So the next time you have acid reflux, dont just take our word for it, try Apple Cider Vinegar which is acidic thanks to Acetic Acid) and see the difference!

We need more Apple Cider Vinegar (containing Acetic Acid acid which has a pH of 2.5, almost as strong as natural stomach acid) as we start to age. This is because when you reach the age of 50, 60 and above, your pH in your stomach goes higher and higher which makes the stomach alkaline. So we need more acid as we age.

Many people complain about heartburn as they age. This is caused by stomach acid escaping through the value as it doesnt close.

Once you understand that when the pH of your stomach is too alkaline(read above) it causes conditions like acid reflux. Therefore, it needs an acid (since the stomach is too alkaline) to calm down acidity, which in reality should not be called acidity. When Apple Cider Vinegar goes into our bodies, it helps to close up that value and prevents more acid escaping.

Acetic Acid is very acidic and is used to cure various conditions like acid reflux in which the stomach becomes too much alkaline. This is because the slightest change from drinking Apple Cider Vinegar (which contains Acetic Acid) will change your pH and that will aid in transporting minerals, allowing enzymes to work, stimulate the thyroid and increase metabolism.

Apple Cider Vinegar and its Acetic Acid helps to digest more protein and absorb more CALCIUM. Those who have never had any Apple Cider Vinegar are missing out on some serious goodness as their bodies face a risk of being too alkaline. Instead of worrying about how to lose weight with Apple Cider Vinegar, we need to see the incredible benefit of breaking down proteins and calcium needed for weight loss and rebuilding.

When you dont drink Apple Cider Vinegar, Calcium tends to build up in soft tissues throughout the body. This causes a lot of stiffness and excessive calcium build up on the joints leading to arthritis and calcium developing too much in their eyes also known as cataracts. Excess calcium can also develop in the form of kidney stones in the kidneys or gallbladder stones in the gallbladder.

If you show symptoms of calcium or potassium deficiency then in that case you can use apple cider vinegar.

There are many benefits of apple cider vinegar and Apple cider vinegar is fantastic for all sorts of ailments, but not because of its nutritional content, but from the ability to acidify the body.

The stress hormone, cortisol is the main reason which causes our bodies to become too alkaline over time. So, the worst thing when it comes to questioning how to lose weight with Apple Cider Vinegar is to consume it for a day or two and then leave it. It helps the body to balance its pH and thats why its so fantastic.

Due to the common excessive alkalinity a good portion of the population has, apple cider vinegar is a safe and healthy solution.

We know that Apple Cider Vinegar helps with loosening the joints and absorbing calcium deposits. Therefore, Apple Cider Vinegar will help to get rid of these cramps.

”I believe in doing things in moderation” – Outlook India

''I believe in doing things in moderation''

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANSlife) Bollywood actress Diana Penty reveals she is a "huge foodie" but also believes doing everything in moderation. In an interview with IANSlife, the "Happy Bhag Jayegi" actress gives us a peak into her lifestyle.

Your fitness regime?

Penty: My fitness regime at the moment is pretty simple. I was doing pilates a couple of months ago. Now I''ve switched it to light weight training and strength regime intentionally. I don''t do too much cardio, because I lose weight very quickly. So it''s just weight and strength training. What is your diet regime?

Penty: I try to be as healthy as possible. But the problem for me is that I''m a huge foodie. I mean, I''m literally passionate about food. I love trying new restaurants, new cuisine. It just makes me really happy. So it''s very difficult for me to eat completely healthy. But I also believe in doing things in moderation and maintaining a certain balance. I''m not one of those very extreme kind of people. As long as you do it in moderation, you don''t overdo it and if you can compensate it, then it''s fine. It is important to regularly hit the gym and work out.Your fitness essentials?

Penty: I have to admit that I''m terrible when it comes to following and sticking to my fitness regime when I''m traveling. Unfortunately, I need to be pushed. I tend to take it kind of easy. I''m also very dependent on my trainer when I''m working out. But there are ways to make up for it. I realise that when I''m traveling I end up doing a lot of walking. If I''m going to a city that''s friendly for walking, it ususally compensates. Walking is great exercise it''s cardio, I also tend to eat healthier.

Any suggestion for people who are struggling to lose weight?

Penty: I''m the wrong person to ask for advice when it comes to losing weight because I''ve never been on that side of the fence. I''ve always tried very hard to gain weight since I was very young. But for either way, it''s important to work out regularly, eat healthy. Be conscious of your diet to whatever extent possible. It''s about tmaintaing balance. Keep hydrated all the time and just live a healthier lifestyle.

‘Today with Hoda and Jenna:’ The Co-Hosts Weigh Themselves on Live TV Before Giving Intermittent Fasting a Try – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Hoda Kotband Jenna Bush Hager ofToday with Hoda and Jennaare known for their transparency. Whether its about parenting, relationships, or daily scheduling, the co-hosts are very open when it comes to their personal lives.

So it was probably not a huge surprise to viewers when the two decided to take a brave step on the scales during their live morning news broadcast earlier this week and reveal their weight tally. This action was sort of a kickoff to the pair embarking on intermittent fasting, the latest popular diet trend touted by a host of celebs.

Both co-hosts are busy moms. Kotb has two young daughters at home whom she recently adopted Haley Joy in February 2017, and Hope Catherine in 2019 and Hager just had her third child, Henry Hal, in August. The two have been contemplating the practice of intermittent fasting more as a way to stay healthy rather than lose weight.

The pair approached the scale with trepidation, though Hager remained positive. Okay, I havent done this in a long time, Hager said according to People, as crunch time approached. Itll be fine.

Edging over the the scales, the women held hands as they came to the moment of truth. Telling each other not to look down, Hager joked, Its like jumping off a cliff.

After taking the leap, Kotb and Hager were a bit stunned at the results, even switching scales to confirm the outcome. Kotbs scaleread 158 pounds, and Hagers total was 171 pounds.

This is why I dont really weigh myself, Hager said, Yall know what is plugged into my Fitbit for real? 130 pounds. I weigh 40 more pounds than I tell everybody I do! I think I weigh twice as much as my sister. Like, two Barbaras could fit in me.

Kotb reminded her co-host of the possible reason for the change. You just had a baby, she told Hager.

The NBC anchors had a reason for their big reveal. Kotb and Hager decided to experiment with intermittent fasting, which is going without food or extremely restricting calories for a period of time. The practice has recently been embraced by several top celebrities including Jennifer Aniston, Chris Pratt, Halle Berry, and Greys Anatomy alum Kate Walsh.

I saw results and I really felt like it was great.Walsh told Us Weeklylast year. I was doing one day a week of fasting, from 6 p.m. to 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. to 7 p.m. I did find that you definitely lose a lot of water weight.

After the weigh-in, Kotb and Hager spoke with Dr. Natalie Azar on the proper way to fast, where the physician described the many health benefits of the practice. I think more in its infancy is the stuff about longevity and Alzheimers, and, you know, maybe it has a role in treating or managing chronic disease and cancer, Azar explained, according to Today.com. Theres no large trials of any of those things, but mechanistically its a very interesting, hot topic right now.

Azar reminded the co-hosts that the purpose of intermittent fasting was an approach to eating that focused on timing. There is no rule because there are so many different ways to approach this, Azar said. Conceptually, its not a diet. Its a way of eating. Itswhenyoure eating as opposed towhatyoure eating.

The physician suggested thinking of the plan as having 12 hours in which you can eat and 12 hours of fasting, which can equal 12 hours of storing food and 12 hours of burning calories. For those who want to try the practice specifically for weight loss, Azar recommended going 16 hours between eating and fasting.

Kotb and Hager will be keeping viewers apprised of their latest journey!

Weight loss: How long does it take to get out of shape? – Times of India

Exactly how much you will lose depends on the length of your break and your fitness level. If you are consistent and exercise for 5 or 6 days a week then it takes more time to get out of shape. Even after taking a break for a week, you will manage to easily bounce back. This is because by working out consistently strengthens your muscle memory and even if you miss out your workout, your skeletal muscles may stick around for a long time even when other muscles shrink.

If you take a break because you are sick then you will start losing your strength within two or three weeks as illness will make you weak. However, if you are not sick then you will start losing your strength after four or five weeks. As per a 2000 study, young people lose 8 percent of their strength after 31 weeks of inactivity, while older people lose 14 percent of their strength during the same time.

Sadly, cardo loss is even quicker as compared to strength loss. As per a study conducted in 1984, 21 days of inactivity decreases the VO2 max by 7 percent and the endurance reduces by 50 percent. Cardio fitness might be the first to go, but it takes less time to regain it.

Pensioner sheds nearly 12st and ‘cures’ himself of diabetes in the process – Wales Online

A pensioner has been "cured" of type 2 diabetes after losing almost 12 stone in weight.

Jim Lindley, 76, from Bridgend , started his weight loss journey six years ago after tipping the scales at a colossal 28st.

But he has since been told by a diabetes nurse that he is no longer showing any signs of the condition after shedding 11st 10lb.

"I don't take any medication for diabetes anymore. I truthfully believe that if I hadn't lost this weight, I wouldn't be here," he said.

Jim was chatting to a friend about needing to lose weight when he was approached by a stranger who said: "Church Hall, Tuesday, 7.30pm, and bring money."

He decided to go along and see what she was talking about and ended up joining Slimming World.

"I remember saying to the consultant that I would not eat that much food in a day, but she said you must remember that you should never be hungry," said Jim.

"In the first week of following the plan I lost 9lb. The most I have lost in one week is 10lb - I couldn't quite believe it, he added.

Throughout his amazing weight loss journey, which started in 2013, Jim said he was repeatedly buying new clothes and having to give them away as he was losing so much weight.

"I have even gone down two shoe sizes. I said in class every part of my body has reduced in dimension, apart from my hat size, Jim joked.

Jim, who now weighs 16st 4lb, said he has always been a big man. Growing up in a Yorkshire mining community, he said he would eat whatever his dad ate when he came home from the pit.

Before he started his diet, his usual breakfast would consist of something quick and fast like a couple of bacon sandwiches or a fry up, which would include full fat sausages, bacon, mushrooms and onions fried in oil with bread slathered in butter.

Having cut out cakes when he found out he was diabetic, he didn't eat a lot of sweet treats but admitted he still liked to snack on biscuits.

He would often skip lunch but would make up for the lost calories with a full cooked dinner, consisting of vegetables roasted in fat, fatty onion gravy and a big Yorkshire pudding.

Now, Jim explained what he eats hasn't changed that much but the way it is cooked has, which makes all the difference.

"I still have a cooked breakfast but without the fat on the bacon and everything is cooked in a low-calorie cooking spray with low-fat sausages," said Jim.

He also continues to enjoy a cooked dinner, but once again he has swapped the fat for healthier options. But the pensioner admits that one of his favourite new meals is a curry.

"My daughter who lives with me does most of the cooking and she makes beautiful curries.

"There is not much difference but there is a lot more veg."

Jim said his success mostly came from being a "stubborn sod", admitting that even if he wasn't losing any weight one week, he would stick at it.

He added: "I would say the biggest thing that helped was giving up the drink.

"I will only have one or two beers on the rare occasion now, whereas before I would drink a lot."

Changing his diet has meant Jim is able to be a lot more active, and he now walks miles around Porthcawl most mornings.

"I do sincerely believe that if I had not gotten that weight off, I would not be here now."

Jim retired years ago to care for his wife, Mary Lindley, who had cancer.

She sadly died just a few months before they reached their 50th wedding anniversary.

"If she was alive and I had done this diet, I know there would be occasions where she would say 'go on, have this big sandwich, it won't hurt'," he laughed.

Slimming World is more than just a diet for Jim, who has become an important member of his group by helping to set up the class each week.

"Everybody is so encouraging, we are all in the same boat."

Jim attends the Westward Slimming World Group, on Llangewydd Road, Cefn Glas in Bridgend. The group runs each Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Mike Tyson fears loss of weight could affect Andy Ruiz in rematch against Anthony Joshua – Latest News in Nigeria & Breaking Naija News 24/7 |…

Former undisputed world heavyweight boxing champion has shared his thoughts on reigning champion Andy Ruiz Jr losing weight ahead of his clash with Anthony Joshua.

Ruiz Jr knocked Joshua in June 2019 to become the undisputed champion in what is considered as one of boxing's greatest upsets largely because of his potbelly and fat figure.

Ahead of their rematch which will come off in Saudi Arabia on December 13, 2019, Ruiz Jr has been spotted looking leaner and more athletic.

But Tyson who is surprised by Ruiz Jr's decision to slim down has expressed fears that loss of weight will negatively affect the champion.

According to Tyson, the 30-year-old will have maintained a stronger punch if he gone along with his old self.

Speaking to Parimatch, Tyson was of the view that there was nothing broken so Ruiz Jr needed to not to have tried to fix anything.

There have been rumors he has lost weight. I dont like that. I believe losing the weight can affect power sometimes," Tyson is quoted by Sun.co.uk to have stated.

He reportedly added: If its not broken, dont fix it. He did well at that weight, so he should stay at that weight. In the first fight, Ruiz put the pressure on him so fast that he didnt know what to anticipate."

Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how British and Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua has fulfilled the dream of a physically challenged lady named Kate Farley by facing her in a boxing sparring fight.

Kate Farley was interviewed by Bulk Powders where she made it known that she wanted to fight with Anthony Joshua.
